WELCOME... October brings with it shorter days and also some rain in Malta and Gozo. Yet these do not affect the beauty and attractions that these islands offer. Greener outdoors and the mild Mediterranean climate make it more enjoyable for countryside walks and activities. The cultural calendar is full of things to do from the annual Notte Bianca in Valletta which brings the city to life at night to theatrical performances and concerts taking place every weekend. For those passionate about opera, not to miss are the annual operas held in Gozo’s main theatres. Join in the celebrations commemorating the 75th anniversary of the award of the George Cross to Malta being held around Grand Harbour.

HERZLICH WILKOMMEN... Im Oktober werden die Tage kürzer, und Malta und Gozo warten auf den lang ersehnten Regen. Dies mindert jedoch nicht die Schönheit der Natur und die Sehenswürdigkeiten der Inseln. Der Regen lässt das Grün sprießen, und das milde mediterrane Klima lädt zu Spaziergängen und Unternehmungen ein. Von der Notte Bianca in Valletta, während der die Nacht zum Tage wird, bis hin zu Theateraufführungen und Konzerten an jedem Wochenende gibt es viel zu sehen. Opernliebhaber dürfen die jährlichen Aufführungen in Gozos Opernhäusern nicht verpassen. Und nehmen Sie teil an der Feierlichkeiten rund um den Grand Harbour aus Anlass des 75. Jahrestags der Verleihung des Georgskreuzes an Malta.

BIENVENUE... Avec l’arrivée du mois d’octobre à Malte et à Gozo les jours sont plus courts et il y a aussi quelques averses. Cependant ceci n’a aucun effet sur la beauté et les attractions qu’offre l’archipel maltais. Un paysage plus vert à l’extérieur et un climat doux méditerranéen rendent plus agréable les promenades et les activités à la campagne. Le calendrier culturel est plein à craquer d’activités à faire ; à commencer par la manifestation annuelle de la Notte Bianca (La Nuit des Musées) à La Valette qui anime la ville la nuit aux représentations théâtrales et les concerts qui ont lieu chaque weekend. Pour ceux qui sont passionnés d’opéra, à ne pas manquer les opéras annuels qui se déroulent dans les théâtres principaux de Gozo. Et puis, pourquoi ne pas participer aux célébrations commémorant le 75e anniversaire de l’attribution de la Croix George à Malte par le Roi George VI d’Angleterre, qui se tiendra dans le Grand Port de Malte ? The Malta Military Tattoo, is a yearly event which features military bands and other elements which come together to provide a spectacular show for audiences of all ages. The music played combines popular tunes, with the more classical and are all performed in the context of a Military March parade to provide a spectacular experience for everyone to enjoy. Festival Mediterranea, (now in its seventeenth edition) is an annual celebration of culture with Gozo as a beautiful island backdrop in warm autumn. Mythology has it that the charm of this island aided the most beautiful nymph Calypso to halt Ulysses on his journeys and lure him away from his travels for seven mystical years. La mythologie veut que le charme de cette île ait aidé la très belle nymphe Calypso à arrêter Ulysse pendant ses voyages et le détourner de son parcours pendant sept ans mythiques. Tailor-made Package To Discover The Story Of Birgu

Heritage Malta offers a variety of schemes and inititiatives for the benefit of its clients and to promote and increase accessibility to all museums and sites. Tailor-made packages are available clustering cultural heritage sites in close proximity or binding them through thematic interest. The Birgu Multisite Ticket entitles visitors to visit three Heritage Malta’s museums situated in the surroundings of the old fortified city.This includes the Inquisitor’s Palace, the Malta Maritime Museum and Fort St. Angelo. The Inquisitor’s Palace is one of the very few surviving palaces of its kind which, in the early modern period could be found all over Europe and South America. The Maltese Inquisitor’s Palace always hosted high-ranking officials representing the main powers on the island, who therefore ensured its survival. Today it is the only Inquisitor’s Palace open to the public in the world and an architectural gem, representative of the chequered history and European heritage of the Maltese islands. The Inqiusitor’s Palace offers a unique experience including

historic reconstruction of the domestic kitchen area, the sophisticated ambience of the piano nobile and private quarters and the austere setting of the Holy Office Tribunal, prison complex and torture chamber. This palace includes also the National Museum of Ethnography with permanent displays on Malta’s religious traditions as consolidated by the Inquisition. The Malta Maritime Museum, housed within the Old Naval bakery, charts Malta’s 7,000 years of maritime history and more within a Mediterranean context. It also illustrates the global nature of seafaring and its impact on Malta’s society. The museum is proud to showcase some unique artefacts including the largest known Roman anchor in the world, the earliest known ex-voto on the island, the largest ship model belonging to the Order of St John, the largest collection of cannons on the island, the Napoleonic figure head of the 110 gun ship HMS Hibernia, a 1950s working marine steam engine and a collection of 60 plus boats. Fort St Angelo fashioned around a strategically located and conveniently sized hillock at the tip of the Birgu peninsula,

the stronghold dominates the Grand harbour. Fort St Angelo’s instrinsic value for the Maltese Islands and their people knows no comparison and no other fortress has been engaged with the same intensity in the shaping of Malta’s destiny. Fort St Angelo offers spectacular panoramic views of the Grand Harbour and its surrounding fortified towns, the experience of the vast and colourful history of the fort through traditional and innovative immersive displays and visitors can explore the various architectural styles employed within this national monument, including staggering examples of artillery. Visitors can discover the history of Birgu with just one ticket in a more convenient and cheaper way. The prices of the Birgu Multisite Ticket are €13 for adults and €7 for children (6-11 years). As part of its social responsability and to ensure that its museums and sites be accessible to all, Heritage Malta offers further concession rates to seniors (60+), youths and students. The ticket price for seniors/youths/students is €9 thus benefiting from a €4 reduction. The Birgu Multisite Ticket can be bought from every Heritage Malta museum and site. Malta Military Tattoo 14th & 15th October

The Malta Military Tattoo is a yearly event which provides a spectacular presentation by both local military bands as well as foreign ones. The music played, in marching band format, is adapted to provide the audiences with an enjoyable experience throughout. This year’s edition includes: • The Armed Forces of Malta and Drill Team • The Malta Police Band • The Malta Police Drill Team • The Massed Pipes and Drums from Malta • & Chorley the Croft and Culcheth Pipe Band from England • The Tagil Band from Russia • The Moscow Youth Dance Company The Chorley, Croft and Culcheth Pipe Band, from England was formed in 1952 as Chorley Pipe Band, based in the North West of England. The pipers traveled from all over the region to attend to practices. Soon the band decided to hold practices in 2 locations and incorporated that into their name change to Chorley, Croft and Culcheth Pipe Band in 2014. The Band has performed in other prestigious tattoos including the Berlin Tattoo, the Basel Tattoo and the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

The Nizhny Tagil Philharmonia’s pop-wind orchestra “Tagil-Band” is multiple award winner of Russian and International contests and festivals. “Tagil Band” members are the most professional musicians in Nizhny Tagil. It was founded in 1992. It is well known as a modern band which brilliantly performs its own exclusive show “Dancing band” on the different stages of Russia, Czech Republic and other countries. The Youth State Dance Company from Moscow are a group of excellent dancers. They have performed in multiple displays and bring to the audiences a mixture of military, navy and folk dances. They have participated in a vast number of festivals and international competitions and won a variety of prestigious awards for their great talent and excellent presentation. Together with the above International presence we also proudly display our very own local bands, which include the Armed Forces of Malta, the Malta Police Force Band and the Malta Police Drill Team, together with the Massed Pipes and Drums. This year’s Malta Military Tattoo will be staged on the Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th October, 19;00hrs at MFCC, Ta’ Qali. COMMEMORATION OF THE AWARD OF THE GEORGE CROSS 4th October

‘ To honour the brave people I award the George Cross to the Island Fortress of Malta to bear witness to a heroism and devotion that will long be famous in history'.

The proclamation was issued by King George VI, on 15 April, 1942, to honour the people of Malta for their bravery and tenacity against the most harrowing bombardments during World War II. The George Cross medal was brought over to Malta by Lord Viscount Gort, VC., who took governorship of the Islands from the outgoing Governor Dobbie in April. Because this was a very dangerous phase of the war, the actual bestowment ceremony was postponed to a later date and eventually was held on 13th September, 1942. Chief Justice George Borg received the medal on behalf of the Maltese people.

Malta will be commemorating this event on Wednesday October 4, 2017, inside the very same square where the ceremony was held 75 years ago. H.R.H. Prince Charles will be attending the evening programme. Seating: 18.45. Event starts: 19.15

The Malta International Choir Festival 2nd - 5th November

The Malta International Choir Festival has now become a mainstay in the Maltese musical calendar and so it is very much anticipated by all music lovers of the genre. Suffice to say that for this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s edition the Ministry for Tourism and the Malta Tourism Authority, the organisers of the festival will be hosting not less than 35 choirs composed of some 1,080 choristers. These choirs hail from nineteen different countries from all over the world, namely, Belgium, Bulgaria, China, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Indonesia, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, Spain and the United Kingdom.

Another important aspect of the festival is the pedagogical part which takes place in the form of workshops or master classes. Notte Bianca 2017 7th October

This year’s edition of Notte Bianca will return to Valletta in spectacular fashion with a carefully curated programme put together by the Notte Bianca team together with the Arts Council Malta, which draws from all the myriad facets of the creative sphere. Festivalgoers can expect to experience amongst the very best in music, dance, theatre, visual arts, literary events, as well as a continuation and expansion on last year’s shift into the exciting emerging world of new and digital arts. Notte Bianca will also continue to use Valletta’s streets and public spaces in innovative, creative ways thanks to a mix of roaming and site-specific projects. A number of international guests have been invited to participate in this year’s festival. During the week leading up to Notte Bianca, world-renowned theatrical group La Fura dels Baus will host a workshop for local artists and theatre practitioners to immerse themselves in the creative ethos of this acclaimed troupe. A diverse assortment of multi-national electronic artists including ODED NIR, Above Smoke and The Floating Fluxman - will combine talents in NOTTE BLANK. This extraordinary entertainment event will include musical and visual performances designed especially for the festival. Local artists will have the opportunity to connect and collaborate with these international guests and find ways to fuse their talents into a thrilling live production which is meant to attract new audiences at Fort St Elmo’s ravishing Pjazza D’Armi. On a similar style, the duo from SPOTS & STRIPES will be doing it differently at Disco Boċċi where audience members and boċċi players will enjoy playing with glowing boċċi to a soundtrack of disco music.

Fans of Maltese music can enjoy IL-KBIR GĦADU DJ by the team behind KELMA KELMA NOTA NOTA who will present a set of Maltese Music remixed by local DJ’s. Visitors wandering into Republic Square can join in a spot of birdwatching in AJRU, an interactive installation of several bird-like objects banding together in flight. The installation developed by the Interactive Architecture Lab is inspired by the thousands of people who flock to Valletta’s ports every year. Jazz enthusiasts will delight in a special treat as acclaimed British drummer Clark Tracy (UK Jazz Drummer 2017) will be joining local virtuosos Dominic Galea and band in Sur Jazz. Together with famed local vocalist Nadine Axisa, the band will play a selection of jazz favourites on Victoria Gate. And in line with Notte Bianca’s tradition to celebrate international artists, this year a special concert titled Claire Tonna Tkanta Leonard Cohen will see local songstress Claire Tonna and

band celebrate the life and works of the late Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen, whilst renowned pianist Gabi Sultana will be celebrating the works of Philip Glass. A number of other established creatives and organisations will be participating this year including artists from the rubberbodies collective, Inizjamed, Moveo Dance Company, Duo Kukkanja, George Curmi Il-Pusè, Late Interactive, Ġiżimina and many more.

Notte Bianca will also feature the traditional fringe programme – Notte Bianca Atmosfera. Venues, shops and spaces all around Valletta will be open till late and organising their own events.
