Saturday 1 – Tuesday 4 Aħna Refuġjati. The Granaries, Floriana. A Challenging New Operatic Work by Mario Sammut Friday 7 – Sunday 9 Każin Barokk. Vittoriosa. In this immersive hybrid performance directed by Elli Papakonstantinou, visuals, music, text and interviews unite to form a “Baroque pastiche” that’s rife with passion, innocence, gambling and mistrust. Każin Barokk plays with many sources, including Regnard’s The Gamester, Pushkin’s The Queen of Spades and Dostoyevsky’s The Gambler. As a decadent cast of lovers, saints and sinners go about the maze-like performance, the piece becomes a soul-searching experience that invites contemporary audiences to influence its structure while exploring Valletta’s Baroque aesthetic. Collaborations with students, local artists and practitioners create a fluid connection between the Maltese Baroque tradition and contemporary society, between popular and high art. Thursday 13 – Saturday 15 Opera Spanga – Aida. Pjazza Teatru Rjal, Valletta. A Contemporary Adaptation of the Opera. www.pjazzateatrurjal.com Friday 14 – Sunday 23 Stitching. This contemporary production is based on the cult 1967 graphic novel, Corto Maltese: Una Ballata del Mare Salato by Hugo Pratt, where avid readers were first introduced to the series’ eponymous protagonist. Set in the Pacific on the eve of World War I, the narrative follows the daring adventures of Corto Maltese, a sea captain and occasional pirate with a lust for travel, treasure and adventure. www.teatrumanoel.com

Samstag, 1. – Dienstag, 4. Aħna Refuġjati. The Granaries, Floriana. “Wir sind Flüchtlinge” ist ein herausforderndes Werk von Mario Sammut Freitag, 7. – Sonntag, 9. Każin Barokk. Vittoriosa. In dieser immersiven hybriden Vorstellung unter der Leitung von Elli Papakonstantinou vereinigen sich Visuales, Musik, Text und Interviews zu einer “Baroque pastiche” voller Passion, Unschuld, Glücksspiel und Misstrauen. Każin Barokk spielt mit vielen Quellen, unter anderem Regnards “The Gamester”, Pushkins “The Queen of Spades” und Dostoyevskys “The Gambler”. The Granaries, Floriana. Una nuova opera di Mario Sammut Venerdì 7 – domenica 9 Każin Barokk. Vittoriosa. A Rare Glimpse On An Elusive Civilization

The National Collection is far greater than the amount of exhibits which form part of the local museums’ permanent displays. Due to space restrictions, numerous artefacts are stored in the reserved collection and are only presented to the public in temporary exhibitions. To create an opportunity for the people to view these reserved artefacts, during the last two years, Heritage Malta has been organising the Espresso Exhibition Series. These exhibitions, though diminutive in size, are intriguingly intense as they shed light on the captivating stories behind the selected objects. The sixth exhibition in this series is located at the National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta and consists of a small collection of Etruscan urns. Etruscans have often been a subject of debate among scholars since their origin was elusive, their language was unique, and the end of their race seems to have dissolved into obscurity. This Etruscan collection is made up of four urns, one lid, and one front piece. It was donated to the Museum by Francesco They; a Maltese quaint gentleman of independent means who loved to collect antiques in an

inconspicuous way. He stored these items in an old house at Strada Reale in Rabat, Malta. Very few people were allowed to inspect this collection, while the public was never permitted to view it. When They died in 1893, he left his property to his two sisters who kept the house closed against all visitors. On their demise, They’s property fell under the auctioneer’s hammer. However, They had bequeathed the Etruscan cinerary urns, a Greek marble inscription, and a number of brass coins to the Museum. In 1930, Themistocles Zammit, at the time the Director of the Museum, went to collect these objects and found four cinerary urns, one lid, and one front part of an urn of the Etruscan (Chiusi) type stored in two cupboards. He had never seen any similar specimen in Malta. It was presumed that these artefacts were imported by an antiques’ collector in the early 19th century, when extensive activity existed between Malta and Leghorn (modern Livorno). Etruscans conceived the afterlife as an extension to the actual life. They both inhumed and cremated their dead,

depositing ashes in a range of containers, including cinerary urns. The tombs located outside the area of habitation, often replicated a domestic interior, and these urns were intended to remain in view. Such urns were commonly used by the Etruscans who flourished along the coast just north of Rome, between the 8th and 1st centuries BC. Renowned for their high artistic skills, Etruscans seem to have been the first to invent the custom of reproducing figures on the lids of cinerary urns. The figures rendered on the cinerary urns’ lids tended to indicate an actual or imminent action. They symbolically allowed the deceased to take part in significant social rites alongside other deceased family members. Indeed, family members depositing a new urn would walk down the burial passage, passing niches and low benches, with the reclining or recumbent heads of the urns’ figures turned up towards them, as if to watch them pass by. Etruscans believed that the sculpted scenes had the power to protect the remains of the deceased contained within the urn. In fact, it was common to have figures showing apotropaic gestures, like horned fingers, as can be seen in Urn 4. Inscriptions were usually painted on the

top part of the urn. Written from right to left, they bore the full name of the deceased, at times including the parents’ names, and for a woman, even her husband’s name. In this way, the whole genealogy could be reconstructed. Evidence from Chiusi and other areas in Northern Etruria show workshops for the mass production of limestone or terracotta urns. The front of the urn was moulded in a selection of relief scenes which were often inspired by Greek myths. The cremated remains were introduced from a hole in the upper surface. Lids were made from moulds and the fully recumbent or reclining figures were not a true portrait of the deceased. After firing, a white slip was applied to the front of the box and the surface of the lid. Colours were then applied on the front of the box depicting the scene. The public is urged to avail of this rare opportunity to view these Etruscan urns which will be on display at the National Museum of Archaeology until September 23. Admission to the exhibition, during normal opening hours of the Museum, between 0900hrs and 1800hrs, will be free of charge.

Travel Tips by Bank of Valletta p.l.c. Summer brings with it a host of exciting plans, and exploring a foreign city is generally a popular tick-box on many a to-do list. More than ever before, cards offer significant benefits for the traveller, whether frequent or not. Here are a few tips about how you can make the most of your BOV card on your next trip abroad. Let us know before you go If you plan to travel to any destination, or you plan to effect hefty payments whilst overseas, it would be wise to advise your Bank. In the case of BOV customers, one may send an email to prmanalysts@bov.com citing the destination and the length of stay. In this manner, the Bank would be able to take the necessary precautions to ensure your card is monitored appropriately. Always check that you have a valid PIN C

In many countries, the chip and PIN technology is common practice. You may even have a BOV contactless card, making it that much simpler and swifter to effect transactions for small amounts. Whatever the case, it is imporant to ensure that you commit your PIN to memory. It is definitely not a good idea to jot it down on a piece of paper and keeping it ‘somewhere safe’. Likewise you should resist the temptation of saving it on your mobile phone. If you have forgotten or do not currently have a PIN, contact your Bank immediately to arrange for one ahead of time. Once in hand, take both your card and PIN to an ATM and effect a balance enquiry to ensure that they are both fully functional. Check the validity period of the Card Ensure that all the cards travelling with you will be valid for the duration of your trip. If any of the cards expire prior to your departure, or during your trip, contact your Bank in advance to arrange for a replacement. Generally Banks send replacement cards several weeks before your current one is due to expire, so make sure that in this case you take the new one with you, saving yourself the hassle of having your card expiring while overseas. Take more than one card with you Smart travellers will always seek to ensure that they have more than one card in their wallet (e.g. a BOV Visa Card, a BOV MasterCard or an American Express Card). A back-up brand may prove to be convenient for a variety of reasons and also provides peace of mind. For more tips about your BOV cards, visit www.bov.com. Bon Voyage! Bank of Valletta p.l.c. is a public limited company regulated by the MFSA and is licensed to carry out the business of banking in terms of the Banking Act (Cap.371 of the Laws of Malta).

Żejt iż-Żejtun - The Olive Oil Event

Żejtun Centre - 29th and 30th September 2018

Żejt iż-Żejtun, the event celebrating the olive picking season and olive pressing for oil, will be held in Żejtun during the evening of Saturday 29th and on Sunday morning 30th September. The place name Żejtun, in its original Semitic connotation, signifies the fruit of the olive trees and the cultivated olive tree, synonymous with the Mediterranean and popular since biblical times. As the place name indicates, olive tree cultivation and its by-products were a prime activity in the South Coast of Malta in the Punic and Roman era with Żejtun at its’ centre. Over the years, especially with the Arab occupation of Malta at the end of the first millennium, cotton gradually replaced the olive tree. In recent years, olive tree cultivation, olive pressing for oil and its’ association with the healthy Mediterranean diet, have made a comeback. Żejt iż-Żejtun celebrates and commemorates all this. The event organized by the Żejtun Local Council will kick off on Saturday at 7:30pm with the BANDU announcing the event which will be followed by a defile of village folk and farmers on carts carrying the olive harvest for pressing. Drummers and flag bearers in medieval costumes as well as folk singers and dancers will be present. Agricultural tools, typical agricultural products and folk art will be exhibited in the ambience of an old country village and fair. Pride of place will be given to the olive tree. Maltese ftajjar and bread dressed in freshly pressed olive oil will be distributed for free tasting. Olive trees and associated products will be on sale. An audio visual presentation will feature olive tree varieties and their proper cultivation. On Saturday all important historical and civic sites will be open to the public. On Sunday morning at 08:00 am a defile of horses and pets will take part in the traditional blessing near the old Parish Church of San Girgor. The two civic band clubs and church belfries will also be open for public viewing.

Historic Celebrations During September During Septemeber Malta celebrates two National Holidays. The 8 September is Victory Day and 21 is Independence Day. Both days mark two important stages in Maltese History. Back in 1565, Malta had undergone the bloody Great Siege which lasted between May 18 and September 11, with Malta constantly under attack by the Ottomans. The Maltese together with the Knights of St John who at the time ruled Malta, fought valiantly until at the end they where victorious. September 7 1800, marks the termination of the short but intense French occupation of Malta. On the same day but in 1943 the Italian Fascists and their regime were overthrown and Malta was free of the constant arial bombardments and could hence concentrate on thwarting the damage caused by the German aerial fleets during the second World War. That is where the name ‘Victory Day’ comes from. On the same day four towns around Malta and Gozo celebrate ‘Il-Bambina’ a religious feast dedicated to Our Lady Child. These are Senglea, Mellieħa, Naxxar and Xagħra (Gozo). September 21 is the celebration of Malta’s Independence from British rule in 1964. On both days, being National holidays, official celebrations with parades by the guard of honour are held in Malta and Gozo and the main highlight on September 8 is the traditional annual regatta in Grand Harbour which takes place in the afternoon.
