The Malta Maritime Museum
Images: Š Heritage Malta
The Malta Maritime Museum was officially opened to the public on 24 July 1992. A suitable building, large enough to cater for the large maritime exhibits, was identified in the former Royal Naval Bakery at Vittoriosa, which met all the set requirements and which was then a derelict building. The former naval bakery which produced 7,000 loaves of bread a day now hosts a history of 7,000 years of human history on the island of Malta. The museum charts Malta’s history which ties itself inadvertently to the sea. The sea that has shaped and helped Malta become the island state it is today.

For the past 20 years the museum has amassed a unique collection of over 20,000 artifacts belonging to Malta’s Maritime past. The national collections, kind donations and purchases have swelled the museum collection which had not a single artifact in 1988. Now within its collections the museum holds unique artifacts which tell the Maltese and foreigners who visit the museum the unique story of Malta. The largest known roman anchor in the world, the earliest known ex:voto on the island, the largest ship model belonging to the Order of St John, the largest collection of cannons on the island, the Napoleonic figure head of the 110 gun ship HMS Hibernia, a 1950’s working marine steam engine and a collection of 60+ boats are among the star items within the collection. If there is one museum which charts out Malta’s history one should look no further. The Malta Maritime Museum at the Marina Grande helps visitors chart 7,000 years of history under one roof.

The season will start at Teatru Aurora in Victoria with the production of Giuseppe Verdi’s four-act grand opera “Il Trovatore”, on Saturday 11th October. The leading role of Leonora, in this opera characterised by love and revenge, will be interpreted by soprano Michele Crider. Other names, associated with some of the most important international opera stages such as Milan’s La Scala and New York’s Metropolitan Opera, will also be participating. These include Marzio Giossi who will interpret Conte di Luna, and Mzia Noradze who will play the role of Azucena. Image: Aurora Opera House Theatre

On the 23rd and 25th October, Giuseppe Verdi's opera "Nabucco” will be produced at the Teatru Astra, also in Victoria. It is one of Verdi’s earlier operas, which caused a tremendous amount of controversy when it was first produced at La Scala in 1842, because of its fervent nationalistic thrust. Leading the cast will be Italian baritone Piero Terranova, together with Silvia dalla Benetta and Carlo Colombara. The production is expected to inaugurate the 13th edition of the festival ‘Mediterranea’, an annual festival of culture that this year will include concerts, site-visits, lectures, exhibitions and drama. Ìulepp tal-Óarrub
Image: Carob tree © Merill
Ìulepp tal-˙arrub is a syrup made out of carob pods. This is a traditional medicine for coughs and sore throat. In ancient times, the Maltese archipelago used to be the ground for a substantial number of carob trees – much more than we see around us to day. The effects of piracy, the building of fortifications and of warfare installations through the ages, coupled with agricultural, urban and industrial development, as well as the population increase, contributed to the carob tree’s drastic population decline. In some countries, the carob bean or pod was, and still is considered as a source of food for both man and beast. Malta is no exception. Locally the pods were extensively used in fodder for large farm animals such as equines and cattle as well as for smaller ones like rabbits. With the advent of balanced rations and pelleted animal feeds, this practice is not very common with farmers today. In times of food scarcity, as for instance during World War II, the pods were used for human consumption raw and fetched a price of ‘one penny per bean’ on the local market. Since the pod has many important chemical properties and applications, it is no wonder that it attracted extensive international research programmes. One of the many medicinal properties of the carob bean is its use in the preparation of cough mixtures. Locally, the tradition of making carob syrup, known as Ìulepp tal-˙arrub, both commercially as a cottage product or at home, is very popular and frequently used to soothe bouts of cough.

THE MALTA MILITARY TATTOO 2014
The Malta Military Tattoo is today part of the calendar of events and activities that are organised for the local population and also for the thousands of tourists that visit malta during this time of the year. The Maltese are very fond of band music. This is reflected in the fact that in Malta there are many active band clubs with approximately four thousand resident or trainee band players. With a total band club membership of over 30,000, these form over six per cent of the total population aged between five and eighty-four years. These figures, even by themselves, show the popularity of band music in Malta. But if taken against a background of about 1,250 band programmes performed yearly within the locality of the band clubs and also outside their locality, one gets the real feeling of the Maltese towards band music. On the other hand, the active presence of tourists in band marches and musical programmes indicates that band music is an added value to our tourism product. The Malta Military Tattoo, which is this year in its 11th edition, will be a pleasant conclusion of the Maltese festive season in which band clubs have the lion’s share of the entertainment. The Malta Military Tattoo will this year feature bands from the Russian Federation, the Netherlands, England and Italy, an Irish Dance Group and a Scottish Dance Group. Malta will be represented by Wallace Pipes and Drums, Red Hackled Pipe Band, and the Pipes and Drums from local Scouts’ groups of Marsa, Hamrun and Zurrieq. These will be joined by the Malta Police Force Precision Drill Team, the Malta Police Force Band and the Armed Forces of Malta Band. The Maltese public and our foreign guests will be entertained by a high level cultural event where military music will reign supreme. Moreover this activity will definitely contribute towards projecting Malta as a unique experience and not as just ‘another’ destination. The Malta Military Tattoo will be held at MFCC in Ta` Qali on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th October 2014. Both performances will start at 18.00 hrs. For assistance or further information, please call 2141 0371 or 2137 6312. Tickets available online from www.ticketline.com.mt
