This issue’s cover image is of the new hydroponic gardens we keep at the Center for Health & Wellbeing. CHWB’s partner in the gardens, the Orlando-based Urban Smart Farms, uses the powerful growing technology of aeroponics to offer a more sustainable way to grow fresh, healthy food. By tapping into the same technology NASA uses, we grow robust, nutrient-rich plants in a cleaner, simpler, and more efficient way.
The produce grown in our hydroponic garden is then used to make the delicious menu items at Nourish Coffee Bar + Kitchen that much healthier, cleaner, and sustainable. Harvested every week, our lettuce and herb plants are used in salads and other items served at Nourish Coffee Bar + Kitchen. The CHWB Hydroponic Garden is made up of 12 towers located next to Studio C on the north side of the Center for Health & Wellbeing. Please stop by and have a look at this exciting addition to CHWB and Nourish Coffee Bar + Kitchen.

Help the planet and bring a sense of accomplishment and wellbeing to your own life. Have you asked how your daily habits can a ect the world around you in a positive way?
Environmental Wellbeing is all about our stewardship of the planet and spending time enjoying its many natural wonders. In the modern age it’s becoming more challenging than ever to get outside and away from the TV or cell phones. When you spend time outside, even just a walk or sitting in the park, it can lead to several health benefits.
Our prescription for improved physical and mental health this spring? Head outside! Here are some researchbacked benefits of spending time outdoors while honoring the earth:
Check out page 10 for a listing of Special Spring 2023 Environmental Wellbeing Programs.
A study published in 2008 found that children with ADHD scored higher on a test of concentration after a walk through a park than after a walk through a residential neighborhood or downtown area. Likewise, a 2017 study found that gardening reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety. When study participants had something to focus on and goal to achieve, their mental health improved.
University of Pittsburgh researchers reported in 2005 that spinal surgery patients experienced less pain and stress and took fewer pain medications during their recoveries if they were exposed to natural light.
Vitamin D is sometimes referred to as the “sunshine vitamin.” A healthy dose of vitamin D increases your calcium levels, which benefits your bones and immune system. A 2014 study found that exposure to sunlight helped older adults achieve adequate amounts of vitamin D. Just don’t forget your sunscreen!
A 2019 study of 20,000 people found that people who spent two hours a week in green spaces — local parks or other natural environments, either all at once or spaced over several visits — were substantially more likely to report good health and psychological wellbeing than those who don’t.
Like exercise and good nutrition, being outside is simply good for us. This Spring, the Center for Health & Wellbeing is proud to offer a slate of special programs focused on supporting budding nature enthusiasts.

The new year, a milestone birthday, to look and feel your best for an upcoming wedding or reunion....so many of us tie our health and wellbeing goals to pages on the calendar. But as the saying goes, “there’s no day like today!” Prioritizing ourselves can happen at any point in year, and the staff at the Peggy & Philip B. Crosby Wellness Center at the Center for Health & Wellbeing are your perfect partners to ignite your fitness journey, no special occasion or upcoming event needed. We sat down with Julie Rooth, a group fitness instructor at Crosby Wellness Center to learn more about her experience with health and fitness and for her expert tips on prioritizing health at any point in the year.
Julie Rooth has always loved health and fitness. In 2017, Rooth began to follow that passion and trained for her ACE certification, a title that recognizes holders as some of the most qualified health and fitness professionals. Through ACE, there are four types of certifications that a health and fitness professional can earn. These include group fitness instructor, personal trainer, health coach, and medical exercise specialist. According to the ACE certification website, when in this wellness field it is important to be ACE certified because it holds the integrity of the industry while keeping standards of practice. After becoming ACE certified, Rooth began teaching classes at the Peggy & Phillip B. Crosby Wellness Center.
“After interviewing several places, I was most impressed with the facility and staff at the Crosby and I know I’ve definitely chosen the right place.”
Rooth began teaching classes in August and is teaching six days a week. Her favorite exercise is strength training mixed with some fun cardio. She believes that people of all ages benefit from strength training and lifting weights.
In addition to her bootcamp and strength conditioning classes, Rooth also teaches fitness programs as part of the Center for Health & Wellbeing’s Community Education offerings. These free, open-to-the public fitness classes bring health and fitness to individuals just getting started, who need an extra push towards a regulated fitness routine, or who simply want to engage in free fitness classes with no gym membership required.
Rooth shared these great reminders on how to prioritize health and fitness throughout the year:
1 2 3 4
“Move your body daily. Give yourself a daily step goal.”
“Add protein to every meal and fill half of your dinner plates (including holiday feasts) with veggies.”
Rooth also shares her health and fitness journey on her social media. You can follow her at @julierooth for more health and fitness inspiration.
“Let health and fitness be a habit that follows you throughout the year.”
The Crosby Wellness Center offers more than 90 group fitness classes designed to meet the needs of both fitness enthusiasts and those new to exercise classes. Each class is taught by a certified instructor, like Rooth, who is trained to provide an excellent, motivating class that is sure to make you want to come back again. Participants can feel comfortable jumping right into any of our classes, including yoga, arthritis therapy, Pilates, aquatics exercise and more. Crosby Wellness Center’s Group fitness classes are great avenues for meeting people. Take a step class or yoga class to find potential exercise friends.

“What you do MOST of the time is what matters to your progress, not what you do SOME of the time.”
“When it comes to health and fitness, I always tell people, just start. Start where you are. With what you’ve got. There’s never going to be the ‘perfect time.’
JUST MOVE YOUR BODY.”

A hysterectomy, which is the removal of the uterus and the cervix, is a serious surgery. GYN Surgeon Dr. Steven McCarus says the most common reason for performing a hysterectomy is to treat serious, heavy bleeding and uterine leiomyomas, also known as fibroids.
If an OBGYN suggests a hysterectomy as a viable treatment option for you, it’s important to know there are several different types of this procedure. Depending on the reason for the surgery, a total, partial or radical hysterectomy may be performed. There are also different approaches to consider. In a total hysterectomy, both the uterus and cervix are removed. A partial hysterectomy leaves the cervix in place and removes only the upper part of the uterus. What’s known as a radical hysterectomy involves removing the entire uterus, cervix and other surrounding areas.
In addition to the type of hysterectomy, there are also varied methods for the actual performing of the surgery. Dr. McCarus shares that “Nowadays, most of our hysterectomy surgeries are performed in a minimally-invasive way, where, in most cases, patients are feeling about 80% to 90% better just two weeks after surgery.”
Minimally-invasive options, such as a laparoscopic approach, involve special instruments with much smaller incisions in the belly button, while a robotic approach would be similar but performed by a robotic platform that’s controlled by your surgeon.
Both robotic and laparoscopic surgeries are considered minimally-invasive and call for a shorter recovery time than the traditional method, which is performed vaginally, via open abdominal surgery. Only three to five percent of Dr. McCarus’ surgeries are done via open abdominal incisions. Generally, Dr. McCarus says, the traditional method of surgery is only done in the event the patient has a large uterus or sometimes cancer. “A significantly larger uterus would not be safe to manage through the minimally invasive options,” he says. The recovery process with a traditional hysterectomy requires a longer hospital stay, longer recovery before returning to work and overall they experience more pain because of the type of incision.
Some patients can effectively be treated without surgery. “There are multiple reasons why a patient may be bleeding heavily or irregularly, so we always look at every patient individually to offer the best treatment option for them, which can be to start with medical management before a potential surgery,” says Dr. McCarus.
Dr. McCarus typically tries medical management first and holds surgery as a last option. The most common medical management approach that AdventHealth gynecologists use is dependent on hormone management. Physicians try to prescribe medication that will suppress the stimulation of the uterus and control bleeding. Patients who are of childbearing age and see children in their future would try these types of medication first, as a hysterectomy would result in the inability to have children.
“Sometimes in our treatment plans, we try to do medical management for at least three months before looking into alternatives if the patient is trying to avoid surgery, because
we know that’s how long it would take for a patient to get the full benefit of medication. These could be pills, injections or vaginal rings — whatever option best suits the patient’s needs,” says Dr. McCarus.
Dr. McCarus practices at the Center for Health & Wellbeing, joining AdventHealth Medical Group Family Medicine and Sports Med and Rehab offices, in addition to the Center’s AdventHealth Lab and Pharmacy.
