During the pandemic we swiftly and successfully moved to online learning. We remain Covid-secure and have measures in place to keep everyone safe.

Course types and levels to suit everyone

Whether you’ve set your sights on university, want to earn while you learn with an apprenticeship, or are ready to start training for your dream career, we offer a range of course types and levels to suit everyone. Many courses are offered at different levels, and many can be full-time or part-time, to make sure learning with us works for you.

Progress to our University Centre You don’t have to go to university to get a degree – you can stay with us! Our University Centre lets you study a higher education course with small class sizes, affordable fees and specialist lecturers. You can find out more about our HE courses on page 88.

Student success Our students are successful! Our Further Education

pass rate for 2020/21 was 94%, with 96% of students agreeing that their teachers gave them good support.

Most of our students progress to university-level education or apprenticeships once they finish their course, too.

Our students aren’t with us because they have to be; they’re here because they love to learn. Choosing what to study You have so many options for education and training after GCSEs that it can sometimes feel like an overwhelming decision. We want to help you choose the right next steps for you. When choosing what to study and where, it can be helpful to make a list of things which might influence your decision, and how important they are to you. Here are some things you may want to consider:

What will you enjoy learning?

The first thing to consider when choosing a course is always what you will enjoy learning. Even if you don’t know what you want to do in the future, you will find your course much more engaging and rewarding, and will do better, if you’re learning about a subject you’re passionate about!

What is your dream career?

If you’ve got a career path in mind, consider whether you need to study certain subjects to get there. You might need to study a science or Maths in order to go to university, for example, or complete a training course at college before you can progress into employment. If you’re not sure where you want your course to take you, our online Career Coach tool can help you learn more about yourself and what careers would suit you, find a career based on the course you’re interested in, build your CV and more.

How do you like to learn?

Everyone has a preferred learning style. If you’re academic and perform well in exams, studying A Levels could be the right choice for you. If you’re more of a hands-on person and prefer to learn by doing, you might prefer a vocational course or an apprenticeship to develop your skills in our specialist facilities.

Are you getting the best advice?

It can be helpful to get advice from friends, family and teachers when choosing your next steps. However, it’s important to stay focused on what you want and what’s right for you; don’t choose a course just because your friends are doing it, or because someone else wants you to.

City Salons Our City Salons at College Green and South Bristol Skills Academy are kitted out with industry-standard equipment to give our hair and beauty students the opportunity to learn from industry professionals in a real working environment. Our students are taught a range of hair, beauty and make-up techniques, work on paying clients and learn real-world salon and spa standards first-hand in spaces just like the ones they’ll be going to work in.

City Restaurant Also found at College Green and South Bristol Skills Academy, our catering and hospitality students have the opportunity to work in industry-standard kitchens and serve in our City Restaurant. The kitchens provide our students with everything they need to serve up restaurant-standard dishes to paying customers, including their peers. Students can grab lunch or dinner and spaces are available to book on Thursday evenings for themed and gourmet nights. The kitchens have also been graced by cooking greats as students are given the opportunity to learn from and work alongside Michelin-star chefs from near and far before dishing up a four-course menu for customers in the evening.

It does not guarantee the provision of such services, since circumstances beyond the control of the College may affect its ability to do so. Your options

Entry requirements and levels of learning When you join us, we want you to be placed on a course that’s the right level for you. Your GCSE results will indicate which course level you will begin at. Whatever level you start at, there are plenty of opportunities to learn and progress onto further study, an apprenticeship or employment. You can stay with us all the way up to degree level. If you achieve five GCSEs at grade 4-9, you are likely to join a Level 3 programme. There are some exceptions, for example, if you have not studied the subject before and need to develop new specialist skills, such as hairdressing or brickwork. If you do not gain five GCSEs at grade 4-9, you will simply start on a lower level course initially and then have the opportunity to progress to Level 3. We will discuss your options with you at your course information meeting, or when you visit us for an Open Event. Foundation/Level 1 Vocational pathways English

Maths Skills for employment

Four grade 2s at GCSE, normally including English Language and Maths at grade 2 or above. What next: Progress to Level 2, technical/vocational qualification or an intermediate apprenticeship.

Level 2 Intermediate apprenticeships

Technical/vocational qualifications

Three grade 3s at GCSE or a Level 1 qualification at Merit grade as well as English Language and Maths at grade 3 or above. What next: Progress to a Level 3 course or advanced apprenticeship.

Level 3 A Levels* (Five grade 4 passes at GCSE including maths and English Language)

Advanced Apprenticeships Technical/vocational qualifications

Five grade 4s at GCSE or full Level 2 qualification at merit grade as well as English Language and Maths at grade 4 or above. What next: Progress into higher education, higher apprenticeship or employment. * Entry requirements for some A Levels specify higher GCSE grades.

Level 4 HNC/HND BA Hons Foundation Degrees B(Eng) Entry to Level 4 programmes is subject to the UCAS points system for full-time study. All entry requirements are available on our website. What next: Progress into employment or on to further study.

Courses

All about A Levels

If you’re academically-minded and usually perform well in exams, A Levels could be the right choice for you. They offer the opportunity to study a range of subjects and gain the academic knowledge and skills that are valued by universities and employers.

How will you learn?

Most students study a full-time programme of three A Levels over two years, although it may be possible to study four. You will be taught at our College Green Centre by expert tutors, and where applicable, have access to our specialist facilities to complete practical work.

How will you be assessed?

A Levels are mainly assessed by external exams at the end of the two years, with mock exams held at the end of your first year. Some subjects may be partially assessed through coursework.

Entry requirements

A Levels are Level 3 qualifications, and for entry onto the courses you will need six GCSEs grade 9-4 (A*-C) or equivalent, including 4 (C) or higher in English Language and Maths. Some subjects will also have additional entry requirements.

Where next?

Once you’ve completed your A Levels, you may choose to go to university, or enrol onto a higher education course at our University Centre. You could also progress onto a higher-level apprenticeship, or use the academic knowledge and skills you’ve gained to go into employment.

Courses

A Levels Art and Design A Level

Art and Design is for anyone with a genuine interest in art. You will learn how to express yourself through a variety of disciplines, work independently, research and develop your ideas and link your work together in a meaningful way.

Biology A Level

Biology is the study of living things: the diversity of life, the structure and function of living organisms and their interactions with the natural environment. You will develop a thorough understanding of biology and the scientific theory and processes that control and affect it.

Business Studies A Level

Business Studies covers all aspects of how businesses are created and run, with modules including management and leadership, marketing, human resources, financial performance and motivation.

Chemistry A Level

Chemistry is the science of materials: their composition, structure, properties and behaviour. You will learn the fundamentals of physical, inorganic and organic chemistry and undertake practical work to see Chemistry in action.

Computer Science A Level

Computer Science is the study of processes that interact with data. You will learn Python and cover the fundamentals of programming, data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented program design.

English Language A Level

English Language explores the ways in which we use words to establish an identity and relate to others. You will develop your own creative and journalistic skills by writing for a variety of audiences and purposes.

English Literature A Level

English Literature is designed to develop your critical thinking, analytical, and creative skills while exploring and analysing some of the greatest classic and modern literary works.

Film Studies A Level

Film Studies will give you a new appreciation of film as an art form, enhance your understanding of the world in terms of competing values, attitudes and beliefs, and put theory to practice by making a short film or writing a screenplay.

Further Maths A Level

Further Maths is designed to stretch your Maths knowledge. You will study core maths and statistics, mechanics or decision maths as well as more challenging material such as complex numbers and hyperbolic geometry.

Geography A Level

Geography deals with vital issues such as climate change, migration, environmental degradation, social issues and natural hazards. You will undertake two supervised fieldwork trips and one independent one to study these phenomena in real life.

History A Level

History involves depth and breadth studies of periods of time to develop your understanding of society and the world in which we live, as well as valuable skills for life including analysis, research, communication and problem-solving.

Law A Level

Law is the study of how the legal system works, the basic principles of how laws are made and applied, and how the law shapes our lives, our society and our moral values. You will study basic and advanced topics on criminal and contract law.

Maths A Level

Maths is a universal language which helps to explain the world around us and is essential to many areas of science. You will study pure mathematics, statistics and mechanics, which are all transferable to a variety of further study options including the sciences and engineering.

Media Studies A Level

Media Studies will teach you to understand all the ways in which the media influences culture, and why people might respond to the media differently. You will study advertising and marketing, newspapers, film radio, video games, TV, magazines and online media.

Photography A Level

Photography will teach you to look at the world in a creative way. You will be introduced to a variety of experiences that explore a range of photographic media, techniques and processes.

Physics A Level

Physics, put simply, explains the basic laws of nature. You will study topics across the breadth of Physics including particles and radiation, mechanics and materials, waves and electricity and nuclear physics.

Politics A Level

Politics is the study of how governments work, how the decisions they make affect our lives, and political ideologies. You will study the government and politics of the UK and the US, and learn to identify political theory in action.

Psychology A Level

All about technical and vocational courses On a technical or vocational course, you will learn the professional knowledge and technical skills to progress into your chosen career or industry sector. Your qualification provides a strong foundation for further study, completing higher-level training or progressing into employment.

How will you learn?

Entry requirements

All our technical and vocational courses include industry placements, work-based projects and working with employers and external organisations to give our students as much workplace experience as possible.

Where next?

You will be taught a combination of theory and practice across the breadth of your subject by specialist tutors, mainly at College. Where relevant, you will have access to our specialist facilities to learn in a simulated work environment. You will study for one or two years, depending on the course subject and level.

How will you be assessed?

Technical and vocational courses are mostly assessed through coursework, but some courses may have examined units. Where undertaken, work-based projects and industry placements will include feedback from the employers.

Our technical and vocational courses are usually Level 2 or Level 3, and the entry requirements for a specific course will depend on its level and the qualification you will gain. If you don’t yet have GCSE English and Maths, both at grade 4 or above, you will study the relevant GCSE or a Functional Skills course alongside your qualification.

Depending on the qualification level you complete, you could progress onto further study either at college or, if you’ve completed a Level 3 qualification, at university. You could also progress onto an apprenticeship at the level above the qualification you’ve earned, or go straight into employment.

Our SEND study programmes are designed to give young people with special educational needs and learning difficulties the skills and experience to live a more independent life, progress into further study or move into employment. We work with the young person to create a study timetable based on their interests, skills, support needs and aspirations. Animal Care Caring for animals makes for a rewarding and engaging career. Students on our Animal Care courses learn at our vibrant Animal Care Centre at South Bristol Skills Academy, home to rabbits, guinea pigs, snakes, giant African snails and more.

This course will prepare you to join a variety of public services, including the police, the fire service and the military. English and Maths matter English and Maths are two of the most important skills and qualifications you can have. How it works: If you already have a GCSE Grade 2 or 3 in English and Maths, you will be supported to achieve a GCSE grade of 4 or above If you’ve already achieved a Functional Skills qualification, you will progress to the next level up to Level 1 If you don’t have any qualifications, you will be individually assessed and placed at the best level for you to succeed

ESOL 81

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) If you’re aged 16-18 and English isn’t your first language, our ESOL courses are designed to improve your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.

Our courses cover five different levels. The first level is Pre Entry/Entry 1, which covers basic English vocabulary and grammar. You will have an initial assessment to determine which level is right for you to start at. Once you complete your first level, you can move up to the next one, and so on. Learning English can help you to progress into further education or employment. Our ESOL courses aren’t just about learning the language, though. They also include other skills including maths and information technology, and industryspecific vocabulary and skills including care and construction, to start you on the way to your future career. Entry 3 - Level 1 courses will include a vocational offer to encourage personal development and progression within the College. There are various progression routes into other courses and apprenticeships once you have completed your ESOL course Our ESOL courses for 16-18 year olds are taught for 16.5 hours a week over one year, and awarded by the English Speaking Board (ESB). Skills for Life and Employment

We offer a range of programmes for students who have faced barriers during their time at school, including those with identified Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND). Our study programmes are designed to give young people the opportunity to develop their skills, knowledge and experience so that they can gain employment, a more independent life, or higher qualifications. Our specialist team work with learners who experience anxiety, or have special educational needs and disabilities including social, emotional and mental health needs.

We plan our programme to meet Education, Health and Care Plans and other planned outcomes. Our Learning Support Team help students in lessons, at break and lunch times, and at the start and the end of the day, as appropriate. All study programmes include English, communication skills, Maths, IT, personal and social development, skills for employment and work experience.

We offer the following:

Sensory Learning

This course supports students with complex needs to develop their communication skills and to make choices as they prepare for adulthood. Our Personal Tutors and support staff work closely with parents/carers and external agencies, assessing and setting targets across the four areas of need, as outlined in the Education, Health and Care plan. A careful transition process is always in place to ensure the provision is right for each student.

Pathways to Employment

This course is for students who are working at foundation level and will progress to higher level qualifications, internships, apprenticeships or employment. In addition to studying English and Maths, students will have the opportunity to access vocational sessions as well as work placements. We also offer a Cycle Mechanics course at our Parkway Centre. This course gives students the practical skills to build, service and repair bicycles in an authentic working environment, while completing a valuable vocational qualification. Our specialist staff are on hand to support learners with anxiety, Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC) and Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

Project Search and Supported Internships

This includes our one-year ‘prepare for’ supported internship course. We offer five internship programmes, including Project Search, into catering for those who are keen to work in the hospitality industry and Project Bristol. The expected outcome for all our interns is part-time or full-time paid employment by the end of the internship. Tutors and specialist job coaches work together with our interns and employers to provide instruction and on-the-job training.

The Brislington Centre

The Brislington Centre is our residential training facility where 13 students each year stay from Sunday through to Friday during term time. During the College holidays, students from other programmes are invited to stay at the Centre to begin their transition into independent living, which may include preparation for life at university. At the Brislington Centre, students develop the skills they need for a more independent life. This includes getting themselves ready for the day, shopping, cleaning, cooking, living a healthy lifestyle, travelling and accessing the local community.

Prince’s Trust

The Prince’s Trust Team Challenge is different. It’s a fun, challenging and positive experience that gives students the chance to prove how good they really are. It’s full-time, 12 weeks long and helps students to gain experience, learn new skills and build their self-confidence.

Industry placements

Industry placements (also known as work experience) are a mandatory element of our study programmes. They’re designed to bridge the gap between education and employment, inform students’ career choices and teach the attitudes and behaviours expected at work. You should expect to complete a minimum of 30 hours and a maximum of 345 hours with an employer in a role directly relevant to your course of study. You will also have opportunities to work on live projects provided by employers, and attend specialist placements and career insight weeks.

How do I find industry placements? The College will support each student in finding the right placement, and our industry placement team will work with you to monitor your progress, visit the workplace to carry out regular progress reviews and support your completion.

How will this fit in around my course?

Industry placements take place outside your timetabled lessons and within usual industry working hours to give you a realistic experience. Contact your Work Placement Officer for further information workexperience@cityofbristol.ac.uk

You can organise your placements through your own contacts, but will need to liaise with your designated work placement officers for next steps and to log your placement.

After College, you could progress to university, an apprenticeship, employment or another training programme. All students have a Study Coach or Personal Tutor who will support you during your time with us, and ensure that you access all the support you need to achieve your full potential. They will be your first point of contact if you have any worries or concerns.
