PARKS & RECREATION - VOLUNTEERS EAGLE SCOUT PROJECTS
VOLUNTEERS AND INTERNSHIPS Are you interested in volunteering or completing and internship with the City of Suffolk? We work to match our volunteers and interns with opportunities that fit their interest, talents, knowledge and skills. Volunteers and interns are a valuable asset to the community and assist us in creating quality programs, activities and events and help our community shine!
Every year Suffolk Parks & Recreation is happy to work with volunteers to enhance services and programs that are offered to the community. Over the past year, the department has been fortunate enough to work with several Eagle Scout candidates on their projects. Ross Roberts, an Eagle Scout, was able to help us transition a picnic area into a more ADA accessible location. Ross was able to help create a parking area, a walkway and pad with a picnic table that increased accessibility to this scenic spot at Lone Star Lakes Park. He worked with our Principal Planner to come up with the design and secured help from several volunteers. The project was completed in June of 2021. Nicholas Newman an Eagle Scout with Troop 259, worked with our team at Sleepy Hole Park to help renovate the horseshoe pit area at the park. Nicolas was able to repaint fencing, benches, backboards and make improvements to the gates and surrounding area. The horseshoe pits are tournament ready and much improved after the enhancements made possible by Nicholas’ project. This project was completed in September of 2021.
School clubs, civic groups, scouts, individuals and interns are welcome. Volunteers and interns receive valuable training and job experience, socialization, a great volunteer environment, career enhancement, recognition, and the opportunity to meet and assist others. Current Eagle Scout projects include the renovation and replacement of a footbridge at Sleepy Hole Park and the addition of artificial fish habitats that will be deployed at Lone Star Lakes Park this spring and summer. Eagle Scouts work hard to plan, raise funds, provide materials, coordinate volunteers, and implement their projects. These efforts aid staff and offer added enhancements that are a wonderful benefit to the community. We are proud of each of these volunteers and the continued contributions that they make!
