A Message from yo ur

Newsletter Editor What’s up Scots! Happy February! I can’t believe we are already two months in to 2021. Hopefully you all had a great start to the year, and if not, I hope it gets better. Key Club has really built a foundation for not only service projects, but socially as well. If you ever need someone to talk to please don’t hesitate to reach out :) January was filled with service opportunities and I am extremely impressed with your hardwork and dedication. This month we have 4+ service opportunities, a social service event, and a bake sale! You can find all the sign up information within the QR codes spaced throughout the newsletter. I am super excited for you guys to see what we have in store for you for the rest of the term! Check out the February calender and try to “spot the difference” on page 16. Enjoy the February newsletter!

Hey Key Clubbers! I hope you’ve had a great start to your second semester! I feel like second semester has been easier to start off with than first semester and hopefully it’s the same for you guys. Just make sure to take care of yourself! Especially now that we’re all distanced from each other :(. But a great way to start on that self care journey is purchasing a self-care Valentine treat to support the Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP) and begin that self-care ;) Also, I’d like to congratulate all the members who were recognized by the Member Recognition Program (MRP)on the district level! We had a large amount of members qualify and I’m super proud of us. This year has definitely been our strongest year as a club and this year (for the first time!) Carlmont Key Club applied for the Club of the Year Award on the division and district level! We were able to do this because of all of your hard work, dedication, and passion to service. We appreciate all of you and everything you do so much! And with the new Key Club term beginning, it’s super super important that everyone attends our club officer elections. You will be electing a new team of officers to lead you in service for the 2021-2022 school year and it’s crucial that you use your voice to vote! Elections are during a Wednesday club meeting on February 10th and the 11th (at 5pm) so make sure to stop by to listen to speeches, ask questions, and cast your vote :D

I hope to see you all soon,

Ashley Zheng

• January 15th - 18th • 6 Service Events • 120 attendees • 193.5 total hours served

Britney Fong - Junior At the Cards 4 Covid Heroes event, we wrote virtual notes for patients or healthcare workers. I chose to write mine to the workers because I am very grateful for their bravery and work. I was happy to be able to express my thankfulness and gratitude to these people since a lot of times they need mental support. It was very special to be able to see the pictures of how happy the notes made the doctors and nurses at the event, especially because it is a lot more difficult to see the impact of volunteering nowadays. Overall I think this was a really unique event that I had a lot of fun being creative with!

Virtual Notes for UCSF Leinita Panda This Virtual Notes for UCSF event was a relaxing and enjoyable one. In this event, we wrote notes for Covid-19 patients and healthcare workers. Considering how Covid has been present in all our lives, I’m glad we could make some sort of impact. Our letters consisted of heartfelt messages and we submitted them through google forms. As we wrote, there was music playing and club members friendlily chatting. This event was fulfilling because we could write words of encouragement to those who need it. It was especially nice because we didn’t need to gather materials or have artistic abilities to make someone’s day better. Overall, it was a great way to spend my Saturday afternoon and I would love to do something similar again!

Guillermo Mendoza - Junior School On Wheels Origami was a virtual event, where key clubbers from our division created origami bookmarks for the School on Wheels organization. Designs ranged from a simple square to more intricate designs such as flowers, butterflies, and animals. Personally, after making the most basic design, I made a koala, flower, and leaves. I had so much fun making them. Although it was difficult to get a hold of at first, creating the bookmarks managed to get easier with time. The hosts of the event were very friendly, providing the different options beyond the basic design and encouraging asking for help.

Kaitlyn Kwan - Junior The Reading Partners Bookmark service event entails making bookmarks that are to be donated to a nonprofit organization called Reading Partners. Reading Partners’ goal is to promote literacy among youth by providing books and bookmarks to children. Each participant was tasked with decorating and writing inspiring quotes on strips of cardstock to make bookmarks. Making these bookmarks were a lot of fun because it allowed me to express my creativity. The atmosphere of the zoom was also very welcoming and inclusive because everyone who attended the event was friendly. I loved this event because it allowed me to give back to my community while having fun at the same time.

Claire Bing - Junior The Color A Smile event was a fun division event during the weekend of service. We were coloring in cute coloring pages for the nonprofit Color A Smile, which distributes drawings to overseas troops, senior citizens, and others in need of a smile. There were lots of coloring templates to choose from, and I printed some flowers and a kid in a balloon. Everyone was in a cheerful mood as we listened to music while coloring. And while coloring may seem like an activity that would be enjoyed more by first graders than teenagers, I thought it was really relaxing and enjoyable. Furthermore, it was nice to think of someone seeing the drawings and smiling.

Cranes for Cancer Allison Hoang - Freshman Cranes for Cancer was a really fun event where we folded cranes for about an hour and a half while listening to music. The host of the meeting gave us information about who the cranes were going to and how it helped. I learned that folding crane was an old Japanese tradition that would bring luck. Folding 1,000 cranes and giving sending them is a way of wishing and giving luck to someone who might need some luck. This event was really enjoyable and relaxing as well as something that made me feel good because I was helping out others.

Kaiser Letter Writing Dear reader, The Kaiser Letter Writing Event was an opportunity to thank the doctors and nurses at Kaiser Permanente Redwood City. We made decorative cards with thank you notes inside to show our appreciation for the front-line workers. The medical workers at these hospitals have been sacrificing so much to keep everybody healthy, so it was nice to get a chance to thank them for everything they do. It was fun to hang out over Zoom, listen to music, and work together to do something kind. Overall, it was a really great experience and I cannot wait for the next event.

Hearts for Carolina Joyce Chu - Sophomore This event, hosted by my sister was very fun different from the events I have gone to in the past. I was fascinated by the background story, the fact that these hearts would be used to carry a mother’s essence to their child was very heartwarming. As for the creating of the hearts, there was some trouble there. After sewing the first heart, I got the hang of it and made an even prettier second heart. All in all, I think this event was a lot of fun and I am very glad I attended it.

Give an an Award Award Interclub Interclub Give Lina Saleh - Sophomore In the Give an Award interclub hosted by Sanjna Sood & Marrisa Chow, club members wrote letters thanking people of various professions for serving their communities. This included mail carriers, librarians, and Recology workers (to name a few). This event was facilitated by Story Corps, to whom we mailed our letters to one we had finished. The event itself was a lot of fun to be a part of, including interesting ice breakers discussed in breakout rooms and energetic chat sessions. Overall, this event displayed how Key Club helps the community with service projects and brings people together.

Hair Accessory Making Social Service Alice Finkelstein - Sophomore During the Hair Accessory Making event, members created different types of hair accessories to be given out to underserved students through an organization called Catie’s Closet. We made different types of accessories including hair ties, hair bows, and decorated bobby pins, and then mailed them to the organization where they would be given out in toiletry bags. I really enjoyed the event, and especially loved sewing bows and making pom poms because I have a passion for making crafts! There were many types of accessories that we could create and so at the end of the event when everyone held up their accessories, I was amazed at how cool every accessory looked - there was everything from hair ties with colorful ribbon to bobby pins with yarn butterflies hot-glued onto them. This event was a great way to socialize with other members while contributing to our community and doing service even virtually!
