Saturday, 12th December 2020 International day of Universal Health coverage Access to healthcare has proven to be more vital especially now as the country struggles to contain the spread of coronavirus. Good health requires guaranteed access to good healthcare. This day of Universal Health Coverage, we highlight the work that Access Afya, a social enterprise, is doing to support Kenyans in low-income communities access quality and affordable healthcare. The social enterprise operates micro clinics that are strategically placed in the communities. The initiative has been able to provide affordable primary healthcare to more than 70,000 people so far.

As of 11th December 2020, there were 90,305 confirmed cases of COVID-19 infections, 1,568 fatalities and 71,254 recoveries in Kenya. According to the Ministry of Health (MoH), Nairobi County is currently the most affected county, with Wajir County being the least impacted.

Standing up for Human Rights The Defenders Coalition, is a coalition of human rights defenders advocating for human rights to be upheld. It also mobilizes members on its network to monitor, document and speak up against human rights violations during this pandemic period. The coalition in partnership with artists have used illustrations to deliver information on the pandemic to residents in Kibera and Maringo’s busy streets, they also developed various initiatives to cushion communities against the ravages of corona-virus.

Mangrove Conservation; Changing Lives in Gazi Mikoko Pamoja, a pioneering Mangrove Conservation and Village Development Project at Gazi Bay has tremendously transformed the lives of the South Coast communities. Through its bio credit model, communities are funded to conserve and protect the mangrove forests in the vast coast region. The reforestation project has guaranteed a long-term security for viable fisheries since its inception . In addition,the coastal village is now defended against natural disasters like sea storms.

Safe Haven for Endangered Rhinos in Isiolo

The Kenya Water for Health Organization has improved lives of marginalized communities through their sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene programs. Through support and partnership with various organizations and local hospitals , they have been able to implement a Maji Safi project that has seen many communities access safe and clean drinking water. They have also mobilized and educated the people on the importance of clean water.

The changing faces competition,an initiative by the advocacy group public space network, is creating greener, safer,cleaner and inclusive neighborhoods across Nairobi County. The association engages community groups on regeneration projects that have transformed the spaces in the community into sustainable and wellmanaged public spaces, at the same time created job opportunities for the youth.

The local community in Isiolo are reversing the fate of critically endangered rhinos. In partnership with the Lewa Conservancy, they have played a critical role in conservation that has seen the number of rhinos grow . On the other hand, the income generated from this conservation efforts is creating a thriving community as it’s channeled into community programs such as hospitals, schools and providing micro credit to women groups.
