World Cancer Day Together, all our actions matter On this World Cancer Day, we highlight the work that Faraja Cancer Support Trust has been doing in helping people with cancer access specialized care and getting support needed in managing and treating the disease. The organization has been on the frontline providing emotional, practical and healing support to cancer patients and their families through a holistic approach. This initiative has been instrumental in helping the patients recover better through their group support meetings and events, craft programs for children undergoing cancer treatment, nutritional support as well as team building activities that offer cancer patients and their families a sense of community.

As of 22nd January 2021, there were 97,733 confirmed cases of COVID-19 infections, 1,702 fatalities and 80,966 recoveries in Kenya. According to the Ministry of Health (MoH), Nairobi is the most affected county, with Tana River County being the least impacted.

Restoring Tana River Delta Forest The degraded Tana River Forest is being restored through a rice growing program courtesy of Nature Kenya. The organization has supported 126 households in Ozi village with rice seeds and engaged them in rice farming, a practice they had abandoned a few years ago due to low returns. This has enabled the community realize a much better economic output at the same time safeguarding Ozi Forest unique biodiversity which had been threatened by deforestation .

Champion of the Earth, Nzambi Metee recognized

Supporting Women Entrepreneurship

A partnership between Envirowild and Indigenous women and girl’s initiative in Baringo County is working towards sensitizing the community on ways to embrace agroecology and growing trees to adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change. Baringo has been one of the counties heavily affected by floods attributed to climate change recently.

Nzambi Metee, an engineer entrepreneur recycling plastic waste to produce sustainable building materials, was recognized for her environmental impact and awarded the Young Champions of the Earth Award in Africa by UNEP in 2020. Her startup Gjenge makers, is reducing environmental degradation through this innovation.

Practical action is working towards supporting women achieve economic empowerment through energy businesses. The organization has trained over 80 women on business development with 225 women being able to access financing to expand their businesses through the self-organized village savings and loan applications.
