Tuesday, 1st December 2020 World Aids Day World Aids Day is meant to create an opportunity to unite in the fight against HIV and AIDs, as well as support people living with the virus. A global effort put into containing the spread of HIV and AIDS appears to have borne fruit with the infection rates declining significantly. This World Aids Day, we look on how the Nilinde project, a five-year project by Plan International, has been working towards strengthening and offering support to orphans and vulnerable children affected by the HIV and AIDs epidemic in Nairobi and five other counties in the coastal region.

As of 27th November 2020, there were 80,102 confirmed cases of COVID-19 infections, 1,427 fatalities and 53,526 recoveries in Kenya. According to the Ministry of Health (MoH), Nairobi County is currently the most affected county, with Tana River County being the least impacted.

Medical Support; for people battling drug addiction in Kiambu The doctors without borders have opened a much needed medically assisted therapy (MAT) clinic in Kiambu County. The facility has enabled people who use drugs within the county access substitution therapy, outpatient care, mental health support, social support and counseling.This will significantly offer much needed support in time where there is increased pressure on mental health brought about by the pandemic.

Nourishing Communities in Isiolo and Marsabit The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition and its partners is supporting local institutions to sustainably reduce acute malnutrition among vulnerable subpopulations in Isiolo and Marsabit Counties.The project dubbed Nawiri,seeks to run on community-led management that will see funds channeled towards improving health systems, education and boosting the availability of nutritious and diverse foods in the two counties.

Garissa’s Safe Haven for Vulnerable Girls

Marine Conservation in Lamu Pays off
Action Aid has taken a major step in fighting against early marriage and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Garissa County by construction a Sh7.5 million safe house for victims. The fully equipped safe house first of its kind in the county, will be run by women activists.It will protect the girls in a county where many girls are projected to be out of school and at risk of early marriage.
Children and young people with disabilities in low-resource communities in Kibera and Kawangware estates have something to smile about thanks to Action Foundation Kenya’s community programme. Through the programme, the children have been able to access holistic development opportunities, educational and health support.
A group of fisherwomen took big leap of faith and closed up an octopus fishery whose population was declining. With funding support from the Nature Conservancy and Northern Rangelands Trust, the community was able to stay away from their critical source of food and income for four months, allowing the octopus to breed and grow.They are now able to fish sustainably and realize profits.
