Earth Hour: Speak Up For Nature Millions across the world celebrate and mark earth hour. The annual event which was originally started by World Wildlife Fund and partners has successfully created one of the largest grassroot movements for environment conservation globally. As part of the celebration during this day, lights are switched off for an hour in landmark buildings, homes and businesses across the world calling attention to climate change. This year’s event will be marked on March 27 2021 at 8.30pm with an aim of putting nature at the center of international conversations to prompt world leaders and decision makers to act on reversing nature loss and setting nature on the path of recovery.

As of 19th March 2021, there were 109,164 confirmed cases of COVID-19 infections, 1,879 fatalities and 87, recoveries in Kenya. According to the Ministry of Health (MoH), Mombasa and Nairobi are currently the most affected counties, with Wajir County being the least impacted.

Conserving Tana River More than nine million Kenyans depend on Tana River for their fresh water. The river is a critical resource especially to the more than 300,000 small scale farmers. The Nature Conservancy through its project, Upper Tana-Nairobi Water Fund has been working in conserving this important river from the source all the way downwards. This has in turn resulted into more than 27 million liters of water flowing into Nairobi County homes and increasing profitability of the farmers along the watershed.

Electric Motorcycles In Kenya Kenya is getting breathier courtesy of electric motorcycles. The pilot project unveiled by the United Nations Environment Program in partnership with Karura Forest, Kenya Power and Lightning Company, Power Hive and Kisumu County government, is key in combating air pollution and climate change. Switching to electric transport is seen as a way the world can build greener and more livable cities.

Ondiri Swamp Gazetted
Banning Single Use Plastic
Cleaning Up Mbagathi River
The Ondiri Swamp, the source of Nairobi River and Tana River will be protected from encroachment and pollution as the Ministry of Environment affirmed that the swamp will be gazetted and fully fenced to protect this critical source of water. The ministry has also put in place measures to stop industries, horticultural and individual farming activities that discharge waste into the swamp. Bamboo trees will be planted around the swamp to restore the degraded land.
The Flipiflopi is in its second week sail across Lake Victoria as they try to clean up plastic trash from the lake. In a partnership with a corporate Law firm, the movement is championing for a collective ban of single use plastic in the whole of East Africa. Kenya managed to ban single use plastic but there is a challenge in safeguarding shared resources like Lake Victoria and the Indian Ocean from plastic waste hence the need for a collective banning, to protect these vital resources.
The Consumer Grassroot Organization of Kenya is cleaning up Mbagathi River. The exercise which is conducted every Sunday at 8:30 am to11:30am is aimed at improving the life line of the river. The project is adopting the circular economy model that uses trap nets to collect and filter out plastics from the water which are taken in for recycling. At the same time, the organization is beautifying , managing and rehabilitating cleaned up areas across the river.
