Safeguarding Wildlife in Amboseli; more on tenBoma In our last issue, we highlighted a story on tenBoma, an initiative by IFAW that is working with community members, law enforcement and park rangers to stop potential threats to wildlife. This week we provide a brief summary on how it works.

What is tenBoma? tenBoma is a wildlife security initiative aimed at curbing poaching.

It is inspired by the African security philosophy “if ten houses look out for each other, the broader community is safer from wildlife conflict”

How It Works When a community member spots suspected poachers

This guarantees security for the wildlife and the community

They provide a tip through the reporting line Law enforcement officials are alerted and act on it. There have been a number of arrests made and ivory confisicated.

Big Win Against Poaching For the first time in 20 years, Kenya Wildlife Service and her partners’ efforts of conserving and protecting the wildlife is bearing fruit as the agency reports zero rhinos were poached in 2020. The heart of this breakthrough is attributed to intelligence led operations by KWS anti-poaching team and improved collaboration with agencies and the local communities in the frontline of anti-poaching efforts.

This includes issues like land ownership which ensures that they benefit fully from conservation. Advocating for Green Spaces

The Kenya Forest Service has reaffirmed its commitment to conserve, protect and manage forest resources. The agency has rolled out a fleet of vehicles that will be deployed strategically to provide technical support to counties in managing community forests.With support from the Food and Agriculture Organization, the agency aims at revitalizing degraded land A move that will ensure Kenya meets the standard 10% forest cover.

Women fishers in Lamu are benefiting from a community conservation programme by Northern Rangelands Trust and USAID and other partners. The initiative is providing them with boats that enable them access more fishing grounds and a direct market for their catch which increases their earnings. Traditionally, men have benefited more from fishing activities but this gives the women a chance to improve on their livelihoods.

Environmental activism can go a long way in ensuring future generations get to enjoy the benefits the environment holds for humans. Daima Green Spaces, an organization that advocates for the preservation and creation of inclusive green spaces, has embarked on a campaign to save trees in Nairobi, marked to be cut to give room for development projects in the city.
