International Women’s Day Meet Team Lioness
Monday, 8th March 2021
This International Women’s Day we are highlighting Team Lioness; A ranger team comprising of entirely women for their contribution in conserving and protecting wildlife. The unique initiative by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) is engaging women from the communities around Amboseli National Park in wildlife protection as they are deeply connected to the land and have insider knowledge on caring and living in harmony with wildlife.

World Wildlife Day Forests and Livelihoods; Sustaining People and Planet This year’s World Wildlife Day is highlighting the central role of forests and how they are important in sustaining millions of people. Many communities have lived in harmony with wildlife, while sustainably managing forests resources such as clean water, soil, food and firewood. This has been the case even as the world faces challenges due to adverse changes in climate conditions that have contributed significantly to the loss and destruction of forests.

As of 8th March 2021, there were 109,164 confirmed cases of COVID-19 infections, 1,879 fatalities and 87, recoveries in Kenya. According to the Ministry of Health (MoH), Mombasa and Nairobi are currently the most affected counties, with Wajir County being the least impacted. Doses of covid vaccines have been imported to kickstart the vaccination program.

Lighting up Education in Kiwa Island
Four years after Kenya banned single plastic use bags, the government has stepped up its fight against plastic pollution, joining over 70 countries in supporting a global negotiated agreement to stop the pollution. More than 2 million people are calling for an urgent action by governments across the world to stop an average, one garbage truck full of plastic, which is estimated to be ending up in the oceans every minute.
Ocean coral reefs sustain plants, ocean organisms and animals like fish and many more. A rise in temperatures due to changes in changes in climate is destroying these vital homes for the aquatic animals. However, scientists from the Wildlife Conservation Society have discovered a rare coral reef in the Kenyan coast offering a unique and thriving habitat that requires protection to ensure the survival of these ocean resources.
Students in Kiwi Island, Lake Victoria are able to conveniently study thanks to support from Renewable World. The organization is working towards eradicating poverty by enabling renewable energy access to remote villages, through connecting schools to their solar grid project that is providing 105 connections and electricity access to the community. The schools now post better results as it has created better learning environments.
