Culture closes its doors
IF YOU have an interest in culture and the arts, one of the last cities you'd possibly want to visit these days is Torrevieja. Gone is the quarterly program of events to be replaced by an A4 sheet of paper. Gone is any advanced information, as with October just two weeks away, the local Government have yet to offer up any information as to what is happening. The worse news is that the Municipal Box Office, Municipal Theatre and Virgen de Carmen Cultural Centre have all been closed; the latter two because of a lack of an opening licence. According to the local government the Torrevieja Town Hall has closed the Cultural Centre for lack of a license to open. Apparently, even though it’s been providing entertainment, dance, theatre, art and photography classes for the past ten years, the centre does not meet safety standards. Unlike the Municipal Theatre which is a poorly designed structure, apparently no one from the new government has ever noticed that the Virgen del
Carmen may not be up to standard, possibly because very few members of the present government have ever been seen at shows in the theatre, according to a number of local association members. The decision paralyses all activities of the three municipal schools and all events planned this month, some of them moved there due to the Council closing the Municipal Theatre. The City Council closed the building as a precautionary measure for the lack of an opening license. This municipal building, has a ground floor and three upper levels and is 1,582 square meters. It houses the main cultural centres of Torrevieja, with an auditorium for 320 people, an exhibition hall, and classrooms and is also home to three municipal schools of dance, painting and photography who should have begun their classes yesterday, Monday. The decision, which affects hundreds of daily users of this enclosure, was adopted by way of urgency by
Every Picture tells a story…
Councillor Victor Ferrández from details by a municipal architect who said the building lacks an opening license since it 'opened' on 29th June 2005. The technical brief states that "the building has no opening license, so it cannot guarantee compliance with the general safety referred to the art.4 of Law 14/2010." This authorization is granted at the time in which the municipal officers checked by inspection that the work performed and conforms to the approved project. Inspection has not been carried out in eleven years and is now being addressed. The closure would last only a few days if they do not detect any serious irregularities. Even though this is a centre with capacity for more than 600 people, it also need a favourable report from the Ministry. Mayor Jose Manuel Dolon (Greens) said that after learning of the possibility of "serious irregularities" one cannot "assume a risk for people. It has never happened, but what if it happens?" Not surprisingly, the Mayor also anticipates that; “we may take legal action for the negligence of the previous leaders.” The Councillor for Planning Fanny Serrrano (PSOE) struck out at the previous PP government team as a "bunch of irresponsibles.” Serrano said the technicians are very clear that a municipal building cannot function without this license. Serrano said that the closure of activities "related to the risk to the safety of people" may be treated by the opposition of the PP "with irony and with a tone of joke" and even campaigns on social networks. The Councillor has ordered the closure of three bars and three clubs this summer, in addition to the Municipal Theatre, also for lack of opening license. The intention of the Department of Culture is to talk with all the groups who have planned activities through the month of September. The building was inaugurated by the then President of the Generalitat Francisco Camps. The implementation, which began in 2003 and ended in June 2005, cost a local builder 5.3 million in exchange for granting them the contract for three floors of underground parking following several processes in which the contest was declared void. Mayor Dolon wanted to clarify that at this moment the 300 parking spaces are not affected by the resolution.

Full house signs for local hotels IT'S BEEN a busy month for local hotels and the tourist business in general in Torrevieja this summer. The figures of number of visitors to the city during the main summer months, July and August were very similar to last year in all aspects, according to data provided by the Councillor for Tourism, Fanny Serrano, and from the technical department of the Department of Tourism, Lidia Rodriguez. Hotel occupancy during the month of August reached 95% occupancy, indicating that Tourism numbers have been on the rise this year and that it has been noticeable this year "that we have recovered the average expenditure per tourist” added Serrano. She also reported on the data of tourists visiting the various tourist information centres of the city, which were located at the headquarters of the old Miramar Restaurant on Paseo Vista Alegre, and the special information counters in the La Mata Town Hall and Playa del Cura. The total number of people requesting
information from the various offices numbered 15,405, a drop of 9.42% less than in 2014, which can be accounted for due to the delay in opening the information point at Playa del Cura.
Domestic visitors included local residents themselves from Torrevieja and the surrounding area followed by tourists from Valencia, Basque Country and Castilla y Leon. Internationally, the
Family Welfare plan
CÉSAR SÁNCHEZ, head of the Alicante Provincial Government, last week announced the launch of a 'Provincial Plan for the welfare of families'. It will involve all political parties of the Province of Alicante, as well as municipalities, associations and groups in the sector. Since transparency, dialogue and consensus, is most important, this initiative aims to strengthen social policies and gain agreement across all areas of the community. The president of the provincial government, César Sánchez noted that at the next plenary institutional meeting there will be a proposal for the establishment of the Bureau for Solidarity and Cooperation in the province of Alicante; a new project that aims to integrate all political parties of the institution as well as municipalities, industry associations and groups linked
to helping people. Through this project, a provincial plan for the welfare of families will be put together, whose strength will be the result of "consensus, dialogue and agreement between the different political forces and sectors working for solidarity", according to César Sánchez. He also pointed out, "We want to work from the bottom up; first listening to the groups involved and then proposing specific actions." This social action initiative will aim to structure the main guidelines leading to improving the welfare and quality of life of those people needing assistance, especially those with greater economic difficulties. To do this, according to the President, "we want to promote civic participation and a social policy based on transparency and dialogue. It will be a common space in which one can discuss and debate and that will be open to any interesting proposals." The head of the provincial government explained that all the resources available to the Council of Alicante in regard to this matter, will focus on people and will look towards locating families in need. César Sánchez said that one of the priorities of the provincial government and the Bureau for Solidarity and Cooperation, will be to progressively work towards

majority came from the United Kingdom, closely followed by the French, who have recovered significantly with their presence in the tourism market. Other visitors were many Belgians, Germans, from Eastern Europe, the Netherlands and Switzerland. Fanny Serrano was pleased with the Tourism data also noted through the Internet and social networks. Actual figures of tourists visiting Torrevieja are also figured by those with second homes in the city and partly worked out from the water usage records provided by Agamed, which reveal that the consumption of July and August only differed by a thousand cubic meters less than 2014, reaching 2,272,162 cubic meters. As for the month of August alone, Serrano said that "the increased efficiency of the network and user awareness" showed a slight decline in the consumption of 1.204.177 cubic meters in 2014 to 1,174,730 cubic meters this year 2015.
providing aid and "focus on providing resources to families that are faring worse and including the middle classes in the province of Alicante." The President also noted that one of the first issues to be addressed by this body will be to supply families with aid in education, but he specified that this wold not only be for economic assistance for school textbooks, but he proposed other factors such as transport and school meals, to provide free schooling for children of 0-3 years, and the modernization of the system and the educational model to be updated to such things proposed, such as electronic books, among others. "The goal is to find comprehensive solutions to the economic problems of families in terms of education and social solutions," César Sánchez pointed out, while also stating that a Technical Commission will be created whose mission will be to collect data for the General Committee for Solidarity and Cooperation and present their findings to the presidency of the Council of Alicante to allow them to move forward on proposals to the Governing Board and to Parliament. This body will be made up by the Vice President and Deputy for Municipalities: Eduardo Dolon, Deputy Family and Citizenship, Mercedes Alonso, and Deputy Peoples' Welfare, Miguel Zaragoza plus technical representatives of the provincial institution and the municipalities, as well as social entities. The President has also advised that there will be representation of the nine associations of the province working in collaboration with the Alicante municipalities, especially those with smaller populations, and representing more than 140,000 people across the province. César Sánchez concluded: "We have to set an example to share and discuss political decisions" and stated that "the Council of Alicante will work towards a line of participation and consensus. Let's take a place of moderation and ongoing dialogue with society."

Alicante airport receives more Town Hall suspends the than 7 million passengers this year redevelopment of Eras de la Sal more passengers
THE AIRPORTS of Valencia this year have received more than 10 million passengers: 3.4 million at Manises (Valencia) and over 7 million at AlicanteElche, as reported by the government delegate in Valencia, Juan Carlos Moragues. The data is indicative and confirms, as noted by Moragues, "the economic recovery of Valencia is not only a place for business travel but also the figures confirm the strength of our tourism industry." Moreover, "this growing trend" has also been in evidence last August in which the number of passengers recorded at the airport of Valencia has increased by 12% compared with the same period last year. As regards the Alicante-Elche airport, the rise in the number of passengers was of 4% compared with August 2014. The delegate said "the numbers are positive," not only in number of passengers but also in commercial operations as since last month we have registered increases of 16% in AlicanteElche and nearly 10% in Valencia. In this regard, he stated that "our airports have recorded growth year after year with
and cargo operations" and that means "more activity and more profit for the business and tourist sector." Moragues has noted that the Government of Spain "will consolidate the path of economic recovery in Valencia by promoting the region's infrastructure." Therefore, the State Budget 2016 has envisaged an investment of nearly 23 million euros for the airports in the Region, "which shows the Government's commitment to this community." Specifically, for the L'Altet airport, a planned investment of 12.4 million euros for environmental activities, investments in information and communications technology, expanding the platform and rapid exit taxiway and support investments and maintenance. In the case of Manises airport, the planned investment by Aena amounts to 10 million euros for environmental actions, safety of people and facilities, support and maintenance of infrastructure. Regarding investment in navigation by テ》ico, this reaches 410,000 euros for the development and improvement of air navigation, upgrading of air trafficcontrol and renovation of the HVAC system communications.
WITH 100 days under their belt Torrevieja's new five party coalition continue their campaign of stopping many of the projects that they voted against while in opposition. Once again, it's left up to the reader to decide if this is for the good of the town or if those of you numbering more than 5,000 who could have voted but didn't, should have voted for the Partido Popular. The latest scheme to receive the axe is the redevelopment of Eras de la Sal. The project has primarily been at a standstill for a number of years, with different plans and projects put forward for its redevelopment. During its major phase of reconstruction, after the removal of the second staging area, the project came to a complete halt because some archaeological pieces were discovered, typical to this part of the coast, and thus the entire project of theatre, cafe, meeting rooms and museum was stopped in its tracks. According to the spokesperson for the Council, Fanny Serrano, the proposal of the designer Javier Garcテュa Solera "has not convinced us, and has not captured the aspirations
of the council so that the grounds might have a greater use of it." Traffic along Cortes de la Valenciano is also due for some more delays as the council has called for the demolition of the roundabout by the IES Las Lagunas school and Lidl, was also agreed upon, and the council have asked the developer who built it to proceed to remove it. The meeting also noted a building under construction near the Municipal Theatre, a construction "that was legally approved but the paperwork only began after the basic project started," was also discussed. Serrano also referred to the possibility of the reopening of one of the clubs that the Council closed and noted that the file is with the Generalitat "but has been brought to the attention of the court the latest developments on the matter."

Volunteers are needed to monitor the hatching of turtle eggs
MORE VOLUNTEERS are needed to help the local biologist to ensure the expected spawning of more turtle eggs. Of the 85 eggs that were spawned by the loggerhead turtle on the beach of La
Mata few weeks ago, seventy of them were taken to the beach of La Albufera, a restricted area, and the rest remain incubating at the premises of the Arca del Mar.
From tomorrow, Wednesday 16th, a new beach camp will begin operating: Camp Tortuguero 'Playa Punta 2', so that it can monitor the area for 24 hours in the place that it is expected to hatch these eggs, possibly at the end of the month. Therefore both the Councillor for the Environment, Fanny Serrano, and the municipal biologist, Juan Antonio Pujol, have appealed as a "courtesy" to people wishing to participate in this surveillance, on a shift basis to care of the nest. Those wishing to take part must contact the department by email: hermanosdesal@gmail.com, with your name, ID number, phone number and when you are available. Although it is assumed that most participants will be from areas near Valencia, the wish is that they want to involve Torrevejenses in any spawning that might occur in La Mata. These days of monitoring, are currently performed periodically, with the introduction of microphones in-bedded in the sand to
pick up the sounds of the spawning and often to take the temperature of the sand, as explained by Juan Antonio Pujol. This work surrounding the hatching includes the collaboration City of Torrevieja, along with the Government, the Oceanographic Department of Valencia and the Parador de El Saler, and is located very close to the place where the turtle spawned her eggs that appeared in La Mata.
RCNT celebrates its 50th in 2016
REAL CLUB NAUTICO TORREVIEJA has already begun preparations aimed to celebrate its half-century since its founding. The RCNT are planning a number of events that will take place throughout the next year, and on this occasion the president of the organization, Germain Soler Hernandez, has appealed for the collaboration of all local partners for 2016. In principle they are asking anyone, the media and individuals who have any documents, be they written, photographic or otherwise, to lend them to the Club for copying, so that they can be held in the history of the club. Anything submitted comes with the full assurance that it will be returned in perfect condition in the shortest time possible. All those who show a willingness to work together with the club can do so at the headquarters of the Nautical Club and the Municipal Archives, located at Calle Antonio Machado, number 137, opposite the bus station, any morning. The head of the Archive Unit, Mari Carmen Cerezuela, has already done this for other local entities such as the commemorations which took place some years ago of the UMT Union Musical Torrevejense on the occasion of its 75th
anniversary, and has been willing to offer their help to collect more information about the history of the club, which also has many sporting success in all water sports, especially in the disciplines of rowing, sailing and fishing. Those interested in helping can contact the club or go directly to the Municipal Archives. With these further collaborations the Real Club Nautico, intends to celebrate the history of the club over the 2016, and at the same time acquire and make available to all members and Torrevejenses in general, the history of the Club, which holds an important piece of the city. In principle, RCNT is expected to carry out numerous commemorative events, although there will be some major, main events, that will specially mark the anniversary, which will be announced as they progress in terms of preparations and in the hope that nothing goes wrong.
The Municipal School of Dance unsure when it will open
WITH THE news that the Council have closed the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre until further notice, classes that should have started this week are presently on hold. The deadline for registrations will now remain open until the first days of October, in order to accommodate those wishing to join the program. The Municipal School of Dance was immersed in preparing the new course for 2015/16 which they still hope will begin in a few days. The school has announced that the deadline for registrations will remain open until the first days of October, in
order to accommodate the demand and allow time for the many torrevejenses families coming back from holiday plus the closure of the centre. In addition to formal education, the school, run by teachers, Nuria Girona, Lola Morales, Carmen Olmedo and Concha Die, will face new challenges as they prepare their dancers for the regular festivals that demonstrate what is being taught, as well as taking part in a number of recreational events where their presence is always expected, following the ingrained tradition that dance has in Torrevieja.

iT’s 2020's wall of ideas ON FRIDAY Torrevieja held their iT2020 conference, has been postponed from July 4th. The Torrevieja Initiative encourages discussion on different aspects of the life in the city and is designed, from one aspect, to improve the quality of life for all residents of the city. Having been advised to do so by the Valencian Government, the Mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, announced the reactivation of Citizen Participation committees of the town, such as the Social Council and the virtual Citizen's Mailbox. He also added that the new project would be structured both in the centre of Torrevieja and the Districts/Barrios as befits a city of such a large population. The alcalde de Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, was speaking at the opening of the conference "T Your Torrevieja: participate in its future" meeting, which is part of the development of preliminary strategic planning for the development of the municipality. They are planning special roles for the departments of Participation and Innovation, directed by Victor Fernandez and Javier Manzanares. Both deputies were speakers at the round tables held during the day. At the opening, the Mayor recollected what has historically been the course of action in Torrevieja, though "protest movements on the neighbourhoods of the town". This has since turned to fruition from the 70s and 80s, with its main landmarks, and how it led to the creation of a Federation of Neighbourhood Associations, driven, among others, by Manuel Mendiluces.
In view of this new movement Dolon noted that the "next step that is occurring from the new municipal government is to recover critical awareness of citizens" to which he added: "We must commit ourselves to the development of the city and its improvement, and be agents of change," In his speech where he referred to participatory budgeting, the need for neighbours to know "how and where it will invest, as information is the first step of participation.” However, the Mayor neglected to mention that the initiative was started over a year ago by the former Partido Popular government, who also wanted to have interaction from the cotisrnds of Torrevieja in making a path for the future. The event has generated interesting discussions among the participants and speakers of the different working groups, Torrevieja "City People, Natural City, Corporate City and Connected City", in
which they were able to hear different points of view, to achieve sustainable development of Torrevieja. The spaces called "Wall of ideas and space for reflection" were very well received by the audience, with a large number of contributions and proposals put forward for possible inclusion in the future strategic planning of the city. What is the iT2020 Torrevieja Initiative? The Torrevieja iT2020 initiative is a reflection process open to all citizens, starting from an analysis of the current situation, ending with defining a future scenario and a consideration as to the ways these aims can be achieved. The essential element includes defining a vision of the city in the long term, not just to 2020 but to the year 2035, which should enable the realization of 2020, in the medium term, but that is moving in the right direction. Torrevieja iT2020 initiative will thus not so much be a means of realizing the city's response to a crisis exit routes, but to realize more resilient methods to survive a crises such as that experienced in society. iT2020 must be understood by all that this is not just a document, but as an open process, constantly under observation, evaluation and reformulation, so that actions and projects that are planned can remain perfectly aligned, with the priorities and development goals declared in the same. Thus, the city of Torrevieja intends to
develop and adopt an integrated sustainable urban development in an effective time of six months, with the active participation throughout the process of citizenship and civil society strategy. The reason that the time line has been chosen, in the medium term for the year 2020, is to match the current period of validity of European, national and regional programming (2014-2020) and thus facilitate the alignment of objectives and funding priorities. Some of the ideas already put forward for consideration include but are limited to: How Torrevieja affects reality and perceived changes in its environment: What are the gaps and needs of the sector to which it belongs or in which the person falls: Torrevieja importance to the development of communication infrastructures, both in the Mediterranean corridor (e.g., AlicanteCartagena axis) as Madrid and peninsular centre: Urban or peri-urban infrastructure (e.g. split ring road N332): Improved communications for pedestrians and cyclists in urban and peripheral thereof with residential and commercial areas: Improvement needed on mobility and accessibility on public roads: Improving the supply of infrastructure for education and university education in the city: Development of actions to promote entrepreneurship and innovation: Actions of promotion of a knowledgebased society, the strong interaction and continuous learning: Consolidation of cultural activities as a tourist attraction throughout the whole year: Strengthening the supply of sports facilities as a source of tourism throughout the whole year: Development of health and wellness offer as a possible line of action for sustainable development of the city: Problems in the small trade sector by the existence of large shopping centres and qualification of the city and nearby coastal area as large tourist area: Urban developments that may generate economic activity and employment. English Classes return to the CIAJ THE VERY popular English Language conversation classes started the new academic year today, at the CIAJ in Torrevieja. It's primarily an opportunity for Spanish students in their teens and twenties to improve their English Language skills over and above what the limited classroom sessions can give them. Today, Tuesday, saw the resumption of English Conversation Classes at the CIAJ and Native volunteer English speakers are always wanted for these fun classes. The classes were the brainchild and are coordinated by Crystal East who oversees the course. It's all very relaxed with one or two English speakers usually having a coffee and a chat with three or four Spanish speakers, completely unstructured and often just chatting about what's on, sport, politics, what's in the news or the telly, new films, life in the UK or around the world or simply asking for advice. Books are coursework are never part of the program so no teaching is involved. The classes are all taught by Native English volunteers and have proved to be one of the most popular courses offered through Torrevieja’s Department of Youth. The Youth Council have announced that the practical conversation classes in English are available at the following times: Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 to 12:00 noon and Wednesday and Thursday from 5:00pm to 6:00pm. The CIAJ is a free, public centre that’s part of Torrevieja’s Ayuntamiento Youth Council and adheres to the national system of information services for youth. The CIAJ is a resource centre and meeting point that offers many different kinds of services and courses in Torrevieja. It costs less than 10.00€ to join the CIAJ and is
One of the busiest areas of CIAJ is its Information Zone that contains information on youth activities, sexual matters, free and confidential advice and a personalized and friendly service to answer all queries, suggestions and petitions. For those wishing to use a computer, these are also available to gather information, partake in task work and learn more about the management of new technologies. They also have a multipurpose room where they hold many of their workshops, lectures and other activities organized by the 'concejalía'. This area is fully equipped with a blackboard, projector, and sound system and can cater to a capacity of about 50 people. In the past, this area has been used for the showing of many classic films followed by discussion open to anyone resident in Torrevieja over the age of 14 through 35 with many discounts offered on cinema and theatre tickets, different courses, hair and beauty treatments in the town, plus automotive and other services. The CIAJ offers much more than just their classroom and meeting areas. Inside one can find information on a variety of subjects of interest, such as different youth contests and competitions, Prevention of health risks, volunteer associations, travel and International Student Travel Cards, different courses, such as English and youth publications and magazines. They also have chairs and tables to allow study and meetings to be carried out in a comfortable atmosphere, plus free Wi-Fi and many resources for job hunting and further education.
sessions. The English Conversation classes are open to anyone Spanish, not just those from 14 to 35. Those wishing to learn English as a Second or foreign Language need to have an intermediate level of English. The activity is open to all the youth of Torrevieja and Registration takes place at the CIAJ, the Centre for Information and Youth Animation. They are one of these service centres that are almost hidden in plain sight being located on Torrevieja’s seafront, close to the Old Man of the Sea Monument, at Paseo Juan Aparicio Number 5, beside Burger King. Those who would like to offer their services as a volunteer English teacher, for these conversational classes, should visit during one of the scheduled class times for more information.

Gruesome discovery of bones in Las Calas SCUBA DIVING is not the most popular of activities off the coast of Torrevieja primarily because of the amount of sand in the area and the lack of wrecks to dive on. However, along the coastline, there are many underwater sights to be seen, caves to be explored and other fun activities, especially where the rocky coves are located. One of the less than fun finds happened last weekend when a sport diver discovered some skeletal remains and called in the Guardia Civil to explore the area further. On Sunday the Guardia Civil located a number of skeletal remains in the sea having been previously alerted, apparently, by a sports diver who was touring the area of Calas de Torrevieja, between calls coves Los Trabajos and La
Zorra. After checking the appearance of some remains inside a pair of jeans, agents called in the support of the Coast Guard boat, and removed a black bag in which possibly contained another set of bones. The rocky coastal area of Torrevieja was busy with forensic agents and coroner, and after the first checks the possibility that these are human remains has yet to be confirmed although they could be from one or more animals. The area is extremely difficult to access because it is a very steep, rocky stretch, usually frequented by swimmers who come from other nearby coves and also by sport divers who often dive here to observe the rich seabed, and it was apparently a SCUBA diver who
discovered the gruesome find and reported their strange find to authorities. The fact that in recent days, coinciding with the torrential rains that have fallen along Torrevieja's coastline, that the high water of volume running into the sea may have disturbed the underlying layer of sand and small rocks which gave rise to the appearance of these remains, coupled with the faster running currents being pushed out to sea. In recent months and even last summer in this area, several boats have arrived with immigrants from Africa. Another possible theory is that this is the body of one of those who was either dumped overboard
Ciudadanos work for understanding between government and opposition
RATHER THAN have any deadlock between the Council and Opposition in Torrevieja, the Councillors for the Municipal ‘Ciudadanos’ party understand that the priority pf the Town Hall is to settle all payments to suppliers of the Town Hall. The Municipal Group ‘Ciudadanos’ C's in Torrevieja decided last week that they would approve the urgent needs of the Information Committee of Finance to facilitate the government's consensual resolution of payment of debts that the City has with different suppliers. The
councillors expressed "we know the acknowledgments of debt are the responsibility of the previous and current municipal government, and they should both understand each other, so that suppliers are not affected, so we can avoid any serious history of delinquency." The ‘Ciudadanos’ councillors added: “We always defend the right to search for solutions through dialogue, consensus and clarity through the participation of all political forces, for the sake of Torrevieja.”
or who did not survive the swim ashore. For these reasons it is possible that the material appeared yesterday in this area of the coastline of Torrevieja, it can be equally related to clandestine migration movement from the Algerian coast. These torrevejenses coves are also known for the appearance of bales of drugs, mainly hashish, which are thrown into the sea from boats who also come from the nearby African coast. While the agents and the authorities did their work yesterday afternoon, there were many curious onlookers who came to see what was going on, giving rise to numerous hypotheses about the remains found.
Torrevieja and Guardamar Mayors meet
THE MAYORS of Torrevieja and Guardamar, José Manuel Dolon (Greens) and José Luis Sáez (PSOE), held a working meeting last week to discuss several issues that affect the neighbouring municipalities. The Mayors discussed the cooperation between both towns and agreed to commit to "a more regional view of the issues, both those that lack the infrastructure and may be common for both of us, and others that already exist and can be shared not only with Guardamar, but with all the Vega Baja, "said José Manuel Dolon after the meeting. The Segura River as the backbone of the region, the coastal defence along with other municipalities and rail links were some of the issues that were on the table, and the AVE shuttles or road links
to Altet airport. The Natural Park is also a space shared by both municipalities and the dunes of Guardamar and La Mata were part of a first point of contact between them. A date for another meeting is expected which councillors will also attend along with the heads of the various areas of responsibility. José Manuel Dolon has also recently met with Antonio Estañ, diputado de Podemos en Les Corts, who came with the General Secretary of Podemos in Torrevieja, Pablo Iglesias Lopez. Podemos Torrevieja offered their willingness to collaborate with the City at both local and regional level and said they want "a decent town, where policies are exercised in favour of social demands and following the law to the letter."

Brussels to investigate subsidies at Castellón’s “airport with no planes” Castellón’s notorious ghost airport, often held up as a prime example of Spain’s wasteful spending during the boom years of its economy, has come under investigation by Brussels shortly before it is scheduled to begin operating its first commercial flights. The European Commission wants to know whether a multi-million-euro sum that the Valencian government agreed to pay Canadian group SNC-Lavalin for managing the airport complies with EU legislation, or whether it could in fact constitute illegal public subsidies. In May 2014 the regional government, then
under Popular Party (PP) control, awarded management of Castellón-Costa de Azahar airport to the Canadian group, which took on the challenge of bringing air traffic to the isolated facilities in exchange for €24.5 million from Valencian authorities during the first nine years. SNC-Lavalin was also exempt from paying a fee for the 20-year concession until a threshold of 1.2 million passengers a year is reached. The multinational, which will invest seven million euros in maintenance, does not expect to reach that kind of traffic until the year 2029. The EU also wants to know whether the Valencian government, Castellón provincial authorities or the public corporation Aerocas worked with SNC-Lavalin to offer some kind of economic benefit to Ryanair, the only commercial airline that has announced it will be running regular flights to and from the airport. The low-cost carrier said it will inaugurate routes to Castellón from London and Bristol on September 15. The EC will probe whether Ryanair received some kind of financial advantage that could create a market distortion. The investigation has been slowed down by the change in government following the Spanish regional and municipal elections of May 24. But sources at the Valencian executive admitted that the probe remains open. “We are reviewing all the paperwork and will not offer an assessment until we
have all the information,” said a source who works for the coalition government of Socialists and Compromís. Another government source said that the PPappointed members of the board of Aerocas, the public corporation that awarded the concession, resigned collectively on June 29 and that nobody warned their replacements that Brussels was on the case. Built by former Castellón provincial chief Carlos Fabra, who is now in jail for tax fraud, the airport was officially opened in March 2011 but remained inoperative until 2014 because it lacked all the necessary licenses. Although the project was due to be built by the private sector, the Valencia government ultimately had to pay out €120 million for construction work, plus an additional €50 million in compensation, cost overruns and external work. When Spain became mired in a deep economic crisis, the plane-less airport was featured in numerous international news reports about reckless public spending during the boom years.
Hundreds of thousands flood streets of Barcelona to call for independence Pro-independence supporters gathered by the hundreds of thousands in Barcelona on Friday afternoon to hold a march that has become an annual tradition on September 11, but which takes on added meaning this year because of upcoming regional elections that could lead to Catalonia’s secession from Spain. Throngs of crowds in white t-shirts had completely filled the four traffic lanes of Meridiana Avenue by 5.14pm, when the main event of the Diada – Catalonia Day – got started. As demonstrators chanted “Independence!” and waved esteladas (the unofficial flag of an independent Catalonia), a giant yellow arrow was carried five kilometres by a group of athletes from the northernmost point of Meridiana Avenue to the Catalan parliament, along a route christened Via Lliure (Liberty Road). Prominent pro-independence politicians marched at the head of the group, including Catalan government official Francesc Homs and the three top candidates in Junts pel Sí (Together for Yes), the secessionist bloc that is running in the September 27 elections: Raül Romeva, Muriel Casals and Carme Forcadell. FC Barcelona player Gerard Piqué was another famous face on view at the march. Conspicuously absent from the march was Josep Antoni Duran, leader of Democratic Union of Catalonia, a Catalanist party that ruled the region almost uninterruptedly for 37 years in
tandem with Democratic Convergence of Catalonia, as CiU. Through his Twitter account, Duran called on Catalans to “defend the land” using “dialogue, cohesion and common sense.” The CiU coalition broke up in June due to disagreement over the independence drive, which Duran does not support. Meanwhile, the Spanish government said that the Diada’s pro-independence acts have become “a campaign event for [Artur] Mas,” referring to the fact that Friday is also day one of the campaign to regional elections on September 27, which the regional premier is casting as a de facto plebiscite on independence. In a press conference with international media outlets, Mas reasserted that if his Junts pel Si bloc wins an absolute majority of seats in the Catalan parliament, he will feel legitimized to press on with his secessionist drive – even if he does not technically obtain a majority of votes.

“I’m not a murderer,” Spanish bullfighter tells protestors
“I’m a bullfighter, not a murderer.” Those were the words that torero José Antonio Morante de la Puebla offered to anti-bullfighting protestors who had just read out a manifesto written by the Málaga AntiBullfighting Collective at an animal rights protest in the Andalusian town of Ronda on Sunday. The Seville-born bullfighter is conducting his own personal crusade against those who oppose the so-called “fiesta,” a
campaign that he is conducting alone, with no strategy, and that is born more from the heart than the head. His actions are, however, having quite an effect given his reputation within the bullfighting world. Thanks to his activities, Morante has a court date for a conciliation session with Petrus Johannes Martinus, an animalrights activist against whom Morante filed a complaint on August 20. Martinus jumped into the
bullring in Palma de Mallorca this summer, during one of Morante’s bullfights. He then did the same thing in Marbella, but on that occasion it seems there were more than just words exchanged between the activist and the bullfighters in the ring, something that could cost the banderillos a fine. It was these incidents that prompted Morante to put matters in the hands of his lawyers, who are demanding compensation of €100,000 from the activist for damages, among other offenses. In Ronda, matters did not go so far. The protestors protested, and Morante had his say. “It’s a provocation as far as I’m concerned for them to come to a place that is so full of mystery and beauty, and so defined by bullfighting as Ronda is,” he said. And then he went on his way.

Police arrest suspect over murder of retired British couple in Alicante
A Moroccan national was arrested by the Civil Guard on Thursday in connection with the death of a British couple found shot inside their home last March. The victims were a former Olympic athlete and his wife, both living in retirement in the small Mediterranean village of Xaló (Alicante). Their bodies were found sitting on the living room sofa, and both had suffered gunshot wounds. Peter David Tarsey, 77, was an elite diver who participated in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. For over 20 years he had been living in Xaló, where he and his spouse had a house located one kilometer from the village center. On the day that the bodies were found, the front door was ajar and bore no signs of having been forced open. It later emerged that the television set had been stolen and the couple’s home computer had been tossed into the swimming pool. The couple had two children, one of whom resides in London and the other in Palma de Mallorca. The bodies were found by friends of the couple who used to meet them for lunch every Sunday, according to statements made at the time of the discovery by Xaló Mayor Joan Miquel Garcés.

The push for better e-government LAST MONTH, Torrevieja's Mayor Jose Manuel Dolon agreed with the Valencia Government that his Council would push forward plans to improve e-government initiatives with the city's website. After three months in power, the municipal website is still awaiting basic updates such as naming each councillor and their list of responsibilities, with a complete lack of contact information, all looked upon as very amateurish among many of the International Community. Last week former Mayor Eduardo Dolon entered the frey and said: "It is high time that the City Council of Torrevieja do something positive for torrevejenses during this mandate because it's good for Torrevieja and it will save costs and management time to improve the services that torrevejenses may expect to receive." The Spokesman of the Municipal Partido Popular party in Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, gave his support to the new council and offered his readiness and satisfaction with the attitude shown by the pentapartito in conjunction with Citizens Party, towards the Modernization Plan (7.0) of the Alicante Provincial Council, which formalises the relevant aspects important for all
municipalities, not just Torrevieja, in the Alicante region. The strategic plan for innovation and modernization of Valencia 2014-2016, has among other initiatives for egovernment the following items: • "City Hall in the Cloud" • "Software City" • "Licensing Agreements" • "eGovernment" • "Municipal Web Portals" • "Digital Signature" • "Wealth Management" In this regard, Eduardo Dolon noted that the previous PP government team had developed all of these areas prior to the signing of the agreement on
administrative procedures, highlighting the approval of the Municipal Ordinance Regulating the Use of e-Government, adopted on September 19th, 2014, at which time the municipal officers were urged to move forward with the mandatory reports. Eduardo Dolon stressed that "it is high time that the City Council of Torrevieja do something positive for torrevejenses in this mandate. At the moment, positive actions are the result of the initiatives and the work of the opposition, because unfortunately, at this time, we cannot expect anything else from pentapartito apparently. We, the PP, assume that responsibility, as we have always done, with the wish that the intentions displayed by the pentapartito to make this project a reality because it's good for Torrevieja, which will save costs, help with time management and that torrevejenses may receive a better service from government departments." The main purpose of this project is to provide the basic technological infrastructure to municipalities for their operation, thereby improving their internal management, increasing levels of quality of services offered and at the same time simplifying the internal management of the administrative
processes allowing themselves to offer services and activities to citizens. For the sustainability of this platform, the Provincal Council of Alicante has created a unified service model that allows for the basic operation of all municipalities. Thus the range of services offered is closed and not customizable, incorporating new services that catalogue those considered to be of use to the greatest number of municipalities, and normalizing hosted services in the ICT infrastructure (Information Technology and Communication) the Council provides for this Plan. One of the main reasons of this Plan is to generate significant cost savings for municipalities, who were supplied by different actions of the Plan for Modernization of the municipalities of the province of Alicante, more public participation and transparency, guaranteeing the right of public access to information, all with better management of resources and access to data, applications and services through the council offers within the scope of the Plan, which minimizing costs in terms of acquisition of hardware and software infrastructure and the consequent maintenance of the equipment. Eduardo Dolon added: “I'd like to highlight the great positive impact and the high degree of satisfaction we have received by the majority of municipalities who have used this plan to modernize their Administration, but I regret that the city of Torrevieja is not among the 84% of municipalities that have already implemented the plan, thereby streamlining the administration process, as it allows one to carry out submissions by citizens every day of the year and at any time and thus reduces costs to the municipality.

Back Stage with Shani Ormiston Q. Who are you and what do you do? I am a singer and songwriter who loves to sing and write songs; and there is nothing more I like than to see people enjoy themselves with my music. I sing a wide range of genres, but have great satisfaction when I sing one of my own compositions and have a positive reaction from the audience. A tremendous experience. Q. How did you start in the business? I have always loved singing and dancing since I was a child, though It wasn’t until I was around 21 years old when I realised that there was a gap in my life, there was something missing, and started to think in what I would really like to do with my life so I started as a hobby to take singing lessons. One day I read an advert in a local paper, with an audition for singers to give their voice and time for a charity cd, so I decided to go, they picked me amongst other artists, and since then it has been a non-stop. Q. What would you be doing if you were not an entertainer? Music forms part of my life and I think it’s a vital organ I need. I would not like to do anything else, though If I have to and could choose, It would definitely be something related to “creativity”.
Q. As an entertainer who has been your biggest influence? Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey have probably been my influences. I admire them both so much, Whitney had a unique sound and a perfect singing technique, and from Mariah I love her song writing ability. Q. Do you ever get nervous or have you suffered stage fright? Yes, I always get nervous, but I think that is good, it shows “respect” for what you do - in a certain way. I suffered a lot of panic attacks and was afraid to sing on a stage, that’s why I didn’t start until I was around 21. I would have never thought that I was capable to do what I am doing now, being able to sing on stage, or in a theatre, at a wedding or wherever. Q. What was your best moment? I have so many good memories of so many different moments small and big, but I remember like yesterday the first time I got airplay in 40 PRINCIPALES - Spain biggest National Radio Station. I couldn’t believe they were playing my songs, suddenly my phone started to ring and all my friends where calling me to tell me I was

on the radio!!!! It was very exciting!! Then there is always a thrill when I put together a CD of my own music and organise a presentation show with a mix of dancing styles, classical musicians or just an acoustic guitar. It’s not just singing or composing, it’s a whole package. Q. What has been your worst moment? I couldn´t choose one single moment. I can say that I have shed so many tears though and felt like giving in 1000 times; though it only makes you stronger and helps you to grow as an artist and a person. Q. What’s the best piece of advice you would give someone starting out in the business? To be yourself, and don’t do what others expect you to be. Live the present and enjoy each and every moment music gives you, as if there was no tomorrow. Q. Any little anecdotes or interesting stories? I have been delighted to be nominated for awards and even won competitions with my own musical compositions. This has taken me to other countries such as Italy (where I represented Spain where I live), or to Hollywood, California for other Indie music awards, and to Belgium to a record label. My first international show was at a Formula One event which was a great thrill. Silver Surfers can Bridge Generation Gap How seniors can maintain independence, stay in touch with family and friends, save and earn money and watch their favourite films with better internet skills. Internet use by over 65s has grown faster than any other age group, having tripled since 2006. The web helps these silver surfers stay connected, save money and combat depression – so why have over five million older individuals still never used the internet, and how can we encourage them to share the benefits? For twenty-five years, the Internet has allowed individuals to keep in touch with friends and family, obtain the services they need and save money. Data from the Office of National Statistics indicates fiftythree per cent of the four million households without Internet access feel they do not need the service. Yet according to accountant PwC, purchasing products and services online could save the average household £560 a year. Offering everything from the cheapest energy tariffs to the best travel deals and cashback opportunities, those without a connection are at risk of paying a premium. A study published earlier this year in the Journal of Gerontology suggests spending time online can ward off depression in retirees, especially among those living alone, by preventing feelings of isolation and loneliness and allowing older individuals to stay connected. Additional research released last month reveals that digital literacy may also delay cognitive decline. Some older people are limited in their access to technology as a result of financial hardship, but it is now possible to purchase a computer, laptop or tablet quite
cheaply and some very competitive broadband deals are available. Many libraries also offer use of their computers free of charge. Thirty-two per cent of those without an Internet connection cite lack of skills as their reason, with six per cent concerned about privacy or security. Age UK runs computer courses across the country, provides resources on how to stay safe online, and has even developed its own tablet, the Breezie, to simplify technology and make it more relevant and accessible to the elderly. The Doro Liberto 810 smartphone also offers a straightforward menu structure with large tiles, but many still need an incentive to get involved. Roy Baldock, 86, from Hertford, recently bought his first laptop. His nephew helped get him set up and then he taught himself the rest. He now spends five hours a day online, browsing news websites, watching old films,
and contacting friends and family. “It allows me to keep in touch with my son in France: we Skype every week and he sends me photo updates of his girls growing up so I never feel like I’m missing out.” “It was good fun learning a new skill. I think more people my age should use the Internet; it’s surprisingly easy and I’d be lost without it! I’ve got all my friends online now, and they often send me emails asking for advice.” But Mr Baldock says that keeping busy and using time productively is important to him. “I’ve worked my whole life and I’m not about to start sitting around playing computer games. When I’m not searching for the best money saving deals, I make money online by writing articles and giving my opinions on the latest products. Sites like Vivatic help stretch my pension a little further.” Tarquin Hellier, head of the online rewards site Vivatic says, “It’s important that the older generation retain their independence, and the Internet is an excellent way for them to do so. The web has so much to offer to this age group and it’s important that we do everything we can to encourage greater participation.” The internet unlocks vast opportunities for ‘smart home’ technologies to control heating, lighting and other electronic devices in the home remotely, and provide tele-health facilities to help seniors maintain their independence and live in their own homes for longer. We have a responsibility to provide support to our families and loved ones so that they can feel confident online – why not share your time and knowledge to help others get started?
Ten ways to do more exercise – without even noticing You don't need to join a gym to get fit. Here are 10 simple ways to trick yourself into being more active in everyday life. It's never too late to start exercising, and see a huge improvement in your health as a result. A relatively small amount, such as walking or cycling for just 20 minutes a day, for instance, can reduce a 60-yearold's risk of heart disease by a fifth, according to a new study from Sweden. The researchers also found that regular light spells of exercise were more beneficial than long and vigorous ones. So every little helps...
1. Hide the phone OK, actually hiding the phone could prove to be counterproductive. But rather than keeping your cordless or mobile phone by your side at home, leave it
in another room so you have to move – quickly – to answer it. 'And when you're chatting on the phone, resist the urge to slump into an armchair,' says personal trainer Lee Pickering from DW Fitness Clubs. 'Keep moving around the house while you talk.' Simply standing rather than sitting can burn up to 50 more calories in an hour. 2. Choose a basket Only buying a few items in the supermarket? 'Carry a basket instead of using a trolley to work the muscles in your arms and build up strength in your bones,' suggests fitness expert Diana Moran, who's the new ambassador for Seven Seas Cod Liver Oil. 'And if you're driving, resist the temptation to park your car near the entrance so you can fit in a walk to the store and back.' Even better, leave the car at home and walk or cycle instead. 3. Lose the TV remote Remember the days when you had to get up from the sofa if you wanted to change channel? It's time to revisit them. Changing channels manually can burn up to 15 calories an hour, according to a 2012 report from the British Nutrition Foundation. And if you get up and move around during the ad breaks, you'll burn considerably more. 4. Start the day with a stretch The simple act of stretching improves flexibility and range of motion, which becomes increasingly important as we get older. Yoga expert Abi Mills (www.abimillsyoga.com) suggests: 'When you wake in the morning, before you even sit up, point your toes, stretch your arms over your head and stretch our your entire body. Relax and repeat five times. Take a few long deep breaths to start your day full of energy.' 5. Sit and twist Stuck in a waiting room or sitting at your table at home? 'Make sure your feet are firmly on the floor and that your back is straight,' says Abi Mills. 'Place both hands on to the right thigh or side of the chair and gently take your gaze over your right shoulder. Hold for a few breaths and repeat on the left. Repeat the exercise three times. Doing this daily will improve flexibility in your spine and
release and tension in your back.' 6. Ignore the lift 'Whenever possible, use the stairs instead of waiting for the lift,' suggests personal trainer Chris Woodhall from Pure Gym. Admittedly, a trip to the fourth floor might mean you need to use the lift on the way up – but that doesn't mean you can't walk down again. And don't feel intimidated by those hassled-looking types who scurry up the stairs two at a time: they're actually burning significantly less calories than those of us who tread on every step, according to a study from the University of Roehampton. 7. Potter! At a loose end? Tidy the kitchen drawers, clear out your wardrobe or do a spot of light dusting. Pottering around the house for two hours a day could burn enough calories to take three inches off your waistline over time, according to recent research from the University of Queensland. 8. Turn the heating down Obviously, we're not suggesting you sit there shivering. But if you've taken our advice to do a spot of pottering, try turning the heating down to encourage yourself to keep warm by moving for a while longer. You can turn it back up again when you've finished. 9. Pack your cupboards wisely Think only a fool would store the teabags on the top shelf and the biscuits at knee level? Actually, there's method in this madness. 'Storing items you use regularly in low and high cupboards will keep you moving and reaching to improve flexibility,' says Chris Woodhall. 10. Fill up the calendar You don't need to plan a trip to the gym or a six-mile hike to ensure you get enough exercise. 'However, filling the calendar to ensure you always have something booked in – whether that's tidying up the garden, meeting a friend for coffee or going to an exhibition – will save you from the lure of a couch potato lifestyle,' advises Chris Woodhall. Ultimately, the trick to building more exercise into your day is to keep busy.

Simple and Complex Carbohydrates Whether you know it or not, every day you chomp down on carbohydrates. But, what exactly are carbohydrates anyway? Carbohydrates or "carbs" are a group of nutrients that supply the body with energy. While protein such as meat, eggs, fish, chicken and legumes all assist with growth and structural components such as skin, hair and nails, carbohydrates are the body's main source of energy. Whether this energy is for sport or gym, or just day-to-day living and brain functioning, carbohydrate consumption is vital. Carbohydrates are made up of three components; carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, and come mostly from plant sources, with the exception of lactose, which comes from milk. Plant sources include all types of fruit and vegetables as well as starches and grains such as rice, potatoes and pasta. When we eat carbohydrates, our body receives the energy contained within them, and if
you were absent in science class, here is a crash course on how it works. Plants absorb energy from the sun in order to grow and blossom, they then store this energy in their roots and flowers and when we eat those roots and flowers; that energy gets released into our system. It is important to note, that not all carbohydrates are equal. There are two main classifications of carbs, rated
according to how they are broken down in the body. These are simple and complex. Simple carbs include glucose, sucrose, fructose and lactose and these provide the quickest energy supply as they are broken down the fastest, releasing the quickest burst of energy into the blood stream. Complex carbs, on the other hand, provide a slower, steadier release of energy into the system and
these include foods such as fiber and starch as well as grains such as bread, pasta, potatoes, corn and other vegetables. Carbohydrates are made up of glucose chains. Depending on the type of carbohydrate you eat, small or large dosages of glucose will be released into the system. All carbohydrates are converted into glucose in the body, glucose being the main source of energy. Simple carbs have the quickest release of glucose, therefore the quickest supply of energy, whilst complex carbs convert to glucose at a slower pace, releasing energy slowly into the system. Carbs are essential in day-today functioning not only because they are the body's primary supply of energy, but because they are the brain and central nervous systems' only source of energy. It has been noted that the human brain and central nervous system require about ten tablespoons of glucose per day.
Ten Steps You Can Take to Slow Down Aging
Aging is a complex process that involves many areas of your body. It's unlikely that any one product or pill could cure all of the ailments of aging. However, there are things you can do that not only will help you age more slowly but will improve your quality of life. Your best bet for a long and healthy life is to: 1. Eat a varied and healthy diet. Include plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grain
foods. Fibre, calcium, iron, magnesium, and vitamins all play a part in keeping your body functioning at its best. Drink lots of fluids to maintain healthy skin and flush out waste. Eating right will help you maintain a healthy weight. 2. Exercise every day. Exercise improves appetite, makes healthy bones, gives you a better emotional outlook and improves digestion and
circulation. Exercise makes you stronger and helps you lose weight. 3. Seeking prompt medical care when you're ill or injured. Listen to your body and take care of any little problems before they become big problems. Get screened for diseases such as cancer and heart disease. 4. Use sunscreen to prevent sunburn. Professionals agree that one of the most significant factors contributing to aging is chronic inflammation of the skin. 5. Quit smoking and avoid second-hand smoke. Smoking has very damaging effects and dramatically increases your risk of getting cancer and heart disease. 6. Manage stress. Stress is a part of everyday life. Develop ways to help you cope and adjust to situations in your life that may cause you stress. The situation isn’t the problem . . . it’s how you react to it. 7. Look for ways to improve overall well-being and enthusiasm for life. Be curious and creative, which will encourage you to learn new things. You can also use humour and laughter to help you age
well and live long. 8. Keep strong relationships. Maintaining close ties to your family and friends are crucial to healthy aging. 9. Don’t let fears and worries dominate your life. A worried mind is not at peace and robs you of zest and energy which you need to maintain youthfulness. 10. Keep cells youthful with antioxidants. Antioxidants are found in a full range of fruits and vegetables, as well as in some meat, like fish. Although, our bodies produce its own antioxidants, the level of product declines over time because of environmental factors and through the aging process. You can also take antioxidant supplements or even anti-oxidant teas.
Types of Simple Carbs Glucose: Single unit carbohydrate. This is the form in which all carbs are broken down into within the body. Sucrose: These include cane sugar, brown sugar, honey, beet and maple syrup. Fructose: These include fruits and certain vegetables as well as highfructose corn syrup and honey. Lactose: These include milk and other dairy products. Sucrose: These include sugar, beets and fruit. Types of Complex Carbs These include fibre, starch, bread, pasta, potatoes, corn and other vegetables.

The world's greatest travel discoveries Valley of the Kings, near Luxor. Check Foreign Office advice before travelling to the Nile Valley – it warns against travel to some areas of the country. The Terracotta Army – China (1974)
On September 12, 1940, an 18-year-old Frenchman called Marcel Ravidat, who was searching for his pet dog, discovered what we now know as the Lascaux Cave, home to wall paintings up to 17,300 years old. In 1979, the prehistoric site was added to the list of Unesco World Heritage Sites. The caves quickly became a popular tourist destination, but are now closed to visitors – including scientists – amid concerns the paintings are being damaged. To mark the 75th anniversary of Ravidat's find, here are 14 more discoveries that tourists should be grateful for... Machu Picchu - Peru (1911)
Brought to international attention in 1911 by American historian Hiram Bingham, the 15th-century Inca site has become one of the most popular travel destinations in the world. Declared a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1983, the lofty citadel (2,430m) is still under restoration today. Chris Moss, Telegraph Travel’s South American expert, said: “Machu Picchu is set in humid subtropical forests, providing a protected habitat for ferns and palms and several endangered species, notably the spectacled bear. Add in swirling clouds, llamas grazing on the terraces and the option to arrive following a hike on mountain trails and/or a train trip through the valley of the Urubamba River, and you have a memorable trip that can last two, seven or 14 days.” Tutankhamun - Egypt (1922)
The discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922 received international press coverage and sparked a renewed public interest in ancient Egypt. The burial mask of the 18th dynasty pharaoh now resides in Cairo Museum, but has become symbolic of popular interest in all things Egypt. His mummy still rests in a tomb in the
Famously discovered by accident in 1974 by farmers digging a well, the clay army of some 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots, 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses belonged to the late Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. Designed to protect the emperor in the afterlife, the figures in the Lintong District, Xi’an, are all different from one another and spread across three pits. Troy – Turkey (1865)
Once a classical city at the centre of one of the most famous wars in history, the ruins in northwest Turkey, Troy, or modern-day Hisarlik, was found in the 1860s and is now easily reached by visitors to the region. Sutton Hoo – England (1939)
A discovery a little closer to home is the Anglo-Saxon ship burial found near Woodbridge in East Anglia. Excavated in 1939, with further work done in the 1960s and 1980s, the find has been described as one of outstanding importance to early medieval history. Many of the artefacts found at the site are now on display in the British Museum, but the burial ground can still be seen at Sutton Hoo. Shisr – Oman (1992) When this desert settlement in southern Oman was excavated in 1992 by a team of archaeologists and explorers including Sir Ranulph Fiennes, it was hailed as the discovery of the lost frankincense city of Ubar, the "Atlantis of the Sands" that was mentioned in the Quran. Experts are divided over whether what visitors see here today was actually Ubar, but the discovery of artefacts from Persia, Rome, and Greece at the site suggests that it
was an important trading hub. A guardian keeps the key to the fenced site, which consists of ruins of a fort and well. The site is not the most accessible of Oman's attractions, lying as it does on the rim of the Rub' al Khali (Empty Quarter) desert (above), but excursions can be arranged from the city of Salalah. Petra – Jordan (1812)
The folds of the Shera Mountains between which Petra is hidden have been inhabited for more than 200,000 years, but the grand rock-cut city that we know today was the work of the Nabatean kingdom around the first century BC, who made Petra their capital before it was annexed by the Romans in 106 AD. The sophisticated city passed through the hands of the subsequent empires and dynasties, including the Byzantine Empire and the Crusaders, to Salah al-Din, after whose rule the city disappeared from western memory. It was rediscovered in 1812 by Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, a Swiss explorer who gave himself the name Sheikh Ibrahim Ibn Abdallah on travels through the Middle East. Telegraph Travel's Lizzie Porter, who recently visited Petra, said: "Walking through the Siq - the narrow gorge that leads to the much-Instagrammed Treasury building - is possibly one of the best approaches to a city on Earth. The rest of the city demonstrates the sophistication of Nabatean society: there are arenas, houses, tombs, palaces and colonnaded streets. It's unmissable." Caracol – Belize (1937)
A major Mayan city in its day – in the east of what is now Belize – Caracol’s flame burned out by (around) 950AD. Its ruins were discovered by loggers seeking
www.coastridersl.com www.coastrider.net CoastRider - Edition 470 564 - March September 5th 2013 15th 2015 mahogany in 1937, and is now one of the country’s most crucial tourist attractions. It is Belize's largest Mayan archaeological site. The main temple rises 136ft from the jungle floor; it is still the tallest man-made structure in the country. However, the statistics fail to do justice to the living history here. Graceful ceiba trees rise from crumbling terraces, their buttress roots stretched like fingers over the stone; howler monkeys roar close by. There were surprisingly few tourists, too. Half-shut your eyes and Caracol lives again. Pompeii – Italy (1599 & 1748)
A city frozen in time in 79AD, Pompeii and its neighbour Herculaneum were mostly destroyed by Mount Vesuvius. Rediscovered in 1599, and again in 1748, the site, a Unesco World Heritage Site, is now a popular tourist destination. Classicist Mary Beard says: “It is the only place in the world where you can begin to understand, face to face, how the Romans of the first century AD lived: from the brothels and lavatories to the posh dining rooms and lavish bathing establishments (the modern spa, health club and gym rolled into one).” Borobudur – Indonesia (1814)
The Borobudur Buddhist temple is the largest ancient monument in the southern hemisphere. Built in the middle of a clearing in the Indonesian rainforest, it dates from the 8th century, when the Sailendra dynasty ruled the region, but it was abandoned in the 15th century when most people on the island converted to Islam. Buried by ash and overgrown with tropical vegetation, only local people knew of its existence until, in 1814, the British ruler of Java, Sir Thomas Raffles, investigated the site. There are nine levels to the temple and the passageways between the different terraces represent the path towards enlightenment. The route is decorated with carvings and in total there are some 2,000 reliefs and more than 500 statues of Buddha along the way. Rosetta Stone – Egypt (1799)
Now attracting tourists to the British Museum, the discovery of the inscribed tablet in 1799 by a French soldier was hailed as ground-breaking, as the first ancient Egyptian bilingual text recovered in modern times. However, the British defeated the French in the country in 1801, when the stone fell into British hands, before it then ended up in the British Museum in 1802, where it remains one of the most-visited artefacts. Ötzi – Italy (1991)

Ötzi is the affectionate nickname of the mummy discovered in 1991 frozen in a glacier in the Ötztal Alps on the border between Austria and Italy. The wellpreserved natural mummy likely died sometime between 3,359 and 3105BC, earning him the title of Europe’s oldest known natural human mummy. Analysis of the body found that he likely died after an arrow wound to the shoulder. Ötzi and his belongings are now on display at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano. Victoria Falls – Zimbabwe (1855)
When the Scottish explorer David Livingstone first saw Victoria Falls in 1855, he described it as “the most wonderful sight I had seen in Africa… scenes so lovely [they] must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight”. That was the moment the 338ft-talls became known to the West. They are now a must for any visitor to Zimbabwe. One for the future?
A long-lost city found in March this year in Honduras is as yet unnamed and still closed to tourists, but could it be a must-visit for future generations?

After Hours at Bar Carmens
Whats On – Costa Blanca caught up with Philip & Julie at Bar Carmens Tell us about yourselves My name is Julie and my partner is Philip. Together we run Carmen’s Bar and Restaurant. I have been in the catering trade all of my adult life and Phil is a qualified chef. I previously ran another bar in Spain for 6 years and met Phil when he came to work for me there. What made you open a bar? My brother and I wanted to own our own bar/restaurant and so we bought Carmen’s. Unfortunately my brother became homesick for the UK very quickly and left. Phil meanwhile was running a golf shop but struggling owing to having to compete with online sales so when the summons came he was happy to come and join me at Carmen’s. That was 3 years ago and since then we’ve never looked back. Where did the inspiration for the name come from? When we took over the bar it had a different name but it had been called Carmen’s Bar and Restaurant previously. We completely revamped and refurbished it and decided to revert to the original name. Who does the cooking? And how would you describe your style? We share the cooking and specialise in good old traditional English fayre. We pride ourselves in doing what people enjoy and
doing it well. All our dishes are homemade using fresh ingredients. During the winter months we do a carvery on Wednesdays and Sundays. We also do outside catering. What’s your favourite dish on the menu? For me it has to be what I call the “proper” butcher’s sausages. They really taste exceptional and I love ‘em! Phil would go for our home-made pies….and I have to categorically state that there is absolutely no truth in the rumour that he ends up eating most of them!!! Favourite day of the week? We have regular live entertainment and karaoke so there’s always something different for us to enjoy. Also we are passionate about doing events to help local charities so we like to do something for these on a regular basis. However my personal favourite day has to be a Thursday as that is the day I host our ‘Card Bingo.’ Once I have a microphone in my hand I tend to say what I think…ooer…I’ve got into trouble a couple of times…but people always come back for more so I can’t be that bad!!! Any interesting tales? There was one bizarre event. We had a
French gentleman and his wife who racked up quite a ‘tab’ one afternoon. When it was time to settle up he announced that he had no money and would have to go to a cashpoint. We suggested his wife stayed with us while he went to one but he refused to leave his wife as a deposit so left us his passport, wallet and car keys and off they went. We never saw them again! Their car disappeared shortly afterwards, so they must have had spare keys, but no sign of them. We handed in their property to the police but that was the last we ever heard. We’ve still got their bill, just in case.

Britain's auto industry hailed Seven types of driver identified: which one are you? Seven different driver types have been identified in a scientific study. The study by the London School of Economics and Political Science found UK drivers react to traffic situations in a variety of ways and that decides which of the seven categories they fall into. The seven driving types can be broken down into Teacher, Know-It-All, Competitor, Punisher, Philosopher, Avoider and Escapee. A Teacher feels the need to let other drivers know if they have made a mistake and expect recognition for their effort, while a Know-It-All is always in the right and will even shout at other drivers. The Competitor often drives too fast or will close a gap to prevent another driver entering a space. The Punisher is even worse and may even experience road rage, while the Philosopher takes a cool, calm approach to driving. An Avoider takes nothing personally and simply sees other drivers as a hazard to steer clear. For the Escapee, the car is somewhere to get away from the world, but they will also use the time when driving to talk on the phone.
Dr Chris Tennant, social psychologist, who is leading the research project for LSE and Goodyear, said: "Much of the time we can sit happily in the comfortable bubble of our car, but around any corner we may have to interact with other drivers. This makes the road a challenging and uncertain social environment. "While we may worry about others' driving, this research suggests that their behaviour also depends on what we do. "We create the personalities that we don't like. From a psychological point of view, these different types of personalities represent different outlets that drivers use to deal with their frustrations and strong feelings. "We are not always entirely one or the other. Depending on the situation and the interaction with others, most of us will find several of these profiles emerge."
Britain showed off the resurgence of its auto industry by displaying a collection of new cars ahead of their appearance at one of Europe's biggest motor shows. Ten cars ranging from high-volume family hatchbacks such as the Vauxhall Astra to luxury models like the Aston Martin Rapide were brought together for a photoshoot on the south bank of the River Thames. Business Secretary Sajid Javid said the cars looked "spectacular" and described the motor industry as "one of the brightest stars" of British business. Addressing the gathering of leading manufacturers in Greenwich, south-east London, he praised the sector for its levels of production, sales, exports and job creation. Mr Javid said: "The results have been nothing short of spectacular and we are
hugely proud of that." He added: "The UK Government backs you in all you do, all the challenges and issues that you face. "Thank you for your continued investment in the UK." According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), more than ÂŁ2 billion of investment and 4,500 new jobs have been announced by the automotive industry so far this year. The sector accounts for 11.8% of Britain's total exports. SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said: "The British motor industry is incredibly competitive, it's incredibly productive, it's attracting a lot of investment and it's making some of the best cars in the world. "We're taking them to Frankfurt next week for one of the most important shows and we hope to wow them."

Everyday classic: Toyota MR2 In a world that was just coming to terms with the explosion of hot hatches available, 1984 witnessed another incredible arrival: the Toyota MR2. Until then, midengined set-ups were mostly the preserve of supercars. Fiat had its X1/9, but the MR2 brought Toyota’s famous reliability and ease of use to the mix and a legend was born. The MR2 (Midship Runabout, 2 seater) was first dreamt up in 1976 with an idea to create an economical car that was fun to drive. Eight years later, the project had morphed into a full-blown sports car: the 1.6-litre engine in the first generation MR2 had 122bhp. That was enough for a 121mph top speed and 062mph in 7.7 seconds, which could see off most hot hatches. Just as importantly, the MR2 tipped the scales at only 1051kg. Many claim the car was designed by Lotus, hence the light weight, but the MR2 was a pure-bred Toyota. However, Lotus’s chief engineer Roger Becker did help with the set-up of the suspension and handling. Little wonder the car received immediate praise from the press for the way it drove when it was
launched. The only significant change for the MR2 during its production life for European buyers was the introduction of the T-Bar roof model in 1987. This version came with two lift-out panels to give a semi-open cockpit. The panels store behind the seats and it was another instant success for the MR2. In Japan, also in 1987, Toyota launched a supercharged version of the MR2 that had 145bhp to satisfy the demand from some customers for more power. However, this model was not offered in Europe. The rev-hungry 1.6 litre petrol engine was the only option in the UK – and it remains a
superb motor. Happy to spin up to its red line all day long, it feels more urgent than on-paper figures might suggest, yet it’s superbly reliable. The five-speed manual gearbox is generally robust too, though it can pop out of fifth gear when it starts to become worn. However, the biggest worry with the MR2 is rust. It can take hold anywhere and is often hidden behind the plastic body kit of later models, so check any car thoroughly before committing cash to buying it. Find a good one, though, and the MR2 will reward every day with its brilliant driving ability. It’s also still very affordable today as it was a car that sold to ordinary drivers rather rock stars, despite its exotic mid-engined layout. Toyota MR2 - Fact file Name and model: Toyota MR2 Dates manufactured: 1984-1989 Popular colours: Red, white, blue Approx cost at time: £9535 (1985) Approx value now: £4500 Number on UK roads (2015): 2781 Related cars: Saab 900 Rival models: Fiat X1/9, Mazda MX-5

Fears that 'blood moon' will lead to apocalyptic meteor strike The arrival of the latest “blood moon” on September 28 will bring a massive world-ending meteor strike, some minority Christian groups are claiming. This will be the fourth blood moon - a phenomenon created when the moon passes into the earth’s shadow - since April 15 last year. With the earth moving between the sun and the moon, the moon takes on a reddish tinge. According to some religious groups, the timing of the eclipses is no
coincidence, but a harbinger of global destruction. The tetrad of lunar eclipses - four consecutive eclipses at six monthly intervals - is seen by some American Christian groups as an omen. John Hagee, a US pastor, wrote a book foretelling the disaster “Four Blood Moons” which in March last year was the country's ninth best-selling paperback. Mr Hagee and Mark Blitz have pinpointed the blood moons as heralding the end of the world and the

second coming They and others who share his view cite sections of the bible to justify their fears. Passages include Acts 2:20: “The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.” NASA sought to put the world’s mind at rest, issuing a statement that its sophisticated monitoring equipment had not seen anything untoward. "NASA knows of no asteroid or comet currently on a collision course with Earth, so the probability of a major collision is quite small," a spokesman said. "In fact, as best as we can tell, no large object is likely to strike the Earth any time in the next several hundred years." But if the world survives the blood moons, it may only be a very brief
temporary reprieve. According to Chris McCann and the eBible Fellowship, the world will in fact end on October 7. Mr McCann cited the scriptures to predict the second coming. He initially said it would take place on May 21 2011, but then revised his prediction – which had been emblazoned on a bus – to October 7. The earlier date, he said, was the deadline for seeking salvation with the latter date being the end of God’s complete 10,000 days of judgment
Britain's smallest house?
When it comes to reaching food high up in trees, giraffes have it down. And this elephant clearly realises that, too - because he's been snapped taking a leaf out of the world's tallest species by stretching to reach pods at the top of a tree. The hilarious pictures show the playful elephant standing upright on his hind legs with its trunk at full stretch reaching out for the pods above. Corlette Wessels, 42, from Johannesburg, South Africa took the snaps at Mana Pools, Zimbabwe, and was stunned to see the hungry elephant playfully finding his food. The mother-of-two said: "It was amazing to see such a majestic animal find such a resourceful way of finding food.
"Elephants do this sometimes to get to the pods high up in the trees. "Most of the pods had been eaten by other smaller elephants so this one had to get to the plants right at the very top. "I've never seen anything like it before. I've seen similar in print and on TV but never in real life." Photographer Corlette, who runs a retail business, said: "I'm not sure whether the elephant was copying a giraffe or not but it did look like one. "It was stretching out and reaching for food at the top but there aren't any giraffes at Mana Pools so I couldn't say if it was copying a giraffe. "It was great to see and nice knowing the elephant could be resourceful looking for food."
It might look like a garden shed, but this building might be Britain's smallest house. And the petite property could be yours for a bargain £30,000. Situated in Bristol, Gloucestershire, the lean-to back extension is fitted with a bathroom, kitchen, bedroom and a mezzanine level accessed by ladders. Described by estate agent Hollis Morgan as "well designed and smartly presented", the Hotwell Road studio has a total floor space of just 18.6 square metres. But there's a catch - it doesn't have planning permission for residential use. The living room doubles as a bedroom, while there is barely enough room to move in a kitchen measuring less than five feet wide. Currently let for £400 per month, the quirky unit is being sold on behalf of Bristol City Council at auction on September 30, with a guide price of £30,000. In 2014, a study found that the
average British home had floor space of 76 square metres - four times the size of this studio. Hollis Morgan's guide said: "A well designed and smartly presented, self contained studio accessed from Little Caroline Place with bathroom and kitchen. "Planning permission needs to be obtained for residential use - buyers must make their own enquiries. "Includes superior leasehold of the main building at 307 Hotwell Road (giving the purchaser the benefit of an additional rent of £100 per annum). "Situated within the heart of the vibrant Hotwells community with its wide range of independent retailers, pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants. "Bristol City Centre is within walking distance as well as the famous SS Great Britain. "Potential for a small studio apartment subject to gaining planning consent for residential use."

CD Torrevieja's worst start of a season TORREVIEJA 0:1 ALZIRA: A single, soft, second half goal from Alzira leaves CD Torrevieja with one one from four games and their worst ever league start. Still winless after four games, what's next for CD Torrevieja? Playing their second home game of the new season, Torrevieja was unable to manage their first victory of the season on Sunday, being defeated by a solitary goal against Alzira, leaving them close to them close to the bottom of the league with just one point to date.
The Valencian team were more competitive and decisive and although the Torrevieja coach, Antonio Pedroza, made a number of changes in the starting line-up in search of goals, but this came to no avail. Sporting a more attack orientated team than before, nerves gripped the locals with many intercepted passes and turnovers and predictable attacks in the first half, a trend that was repeated in the second. Alzira gave the first warning of the danger to come by crashing the ball against the woodwork just before the break and once the game resumed, Torrevieja sought attack at a greater pace however this was just not enough. The Alzria goal was a poor schoolboy mistake, scoring directly from a corner kick with Torrevieja failing to position anyone on the front post. Torrevieja then resorted to long balls but without much effect as this allowed Alzira to counter attack and except for a couple of great saves by Oscar, the final score would have been much worse.
This week could possibly be a make or break week for manager Antonio Pedroza. On Wednesday they have a midweek away game against the usually strong Villarreal CF at 7.00pm returning to the Vicente Garcia Stadium next Sunday to play Muro CF with a 6.00pm kick off. Torrevieja presently are in 19th place, second from bottom and need a win against Muro who are three places above them. Villarreal are presently 10th but only four points above Torrevieja. Two consecutive wins could conceivably put Torrevieja in the upper half of the league table.
Fabio Aru of Astana claims Vuelta a Espana Italian Fabio Aru has wrapped up a debut grand tour triumph, coasting over the line on the final day's ceremonial ride into Madrid to win the 70th edition of the Tour of Spain. The 25-year-old from Sardinia went one better than his second-placed finish behind his idol Alberto Contador at this year's Giro d'Italia to confirm his status as one of the hottest young riders in the sport. He is the youngest winner of the Vuelta since Melchor Mauri won in 1991. Joaquim Rodriguez of Spain (Katusha) was second overall, 57 seconds adrift of Aru, with Poland's Rafal Majka (TinkoffSaxo) a further 12 seconds behind in third as German John Degenkolb (GiantAlpecin) won Monday's (AEST) sprint finish. Aru was not even Astana's leader
when the three-week race began but moved into contention after compatriot Vincenzo Nibali, the 2014 Tour de France champion who won the Vuelta in 2010, was disqualified for hanging onto the Astana team car after a crash on the second stage. Aru's chances were further boosted on

the 11th stage when Chris Froome's bid for a rare TourVuelta double was ended by a heavy fall that left the British Team Sky leader with a fractured bone in his foot and forced his withdrawal. Dutchman Tom Dumoulin was the surprise leader by six seconds over Aru heading into the decisive penultimate stage after a scorching performance in Thursday's time trial. But Aru and his Astana colleagues wrecked the GiantAlpecin's rider's chances of a podium finish when they left him flailing on the third of four ascents and he dropped down to sixth overall as Aru grabbed the leader's red
jersey. "This is not just a triumph for Fabio Aru, this is about the victory of a team," Astana director Alexander Vinokourov said. "On paper it seems easy but the reality is that it was very tough," added the 2006 Tour of Spain winner. Aru said after Sunday's stage he would like to ride the 2016 Tour de France but first would meet with Astana to decide on the year's objectives. "Vincenzo (Nibali) is a great rider, he's won grand tours, so in our team it's not a question of being a leader or not being a leader," Aru said. "Vincenzo was in the team here, but he had to leave in the second stage. But if he had been in the race, we'd both have raced to get a top result because we're both professionals."

Meanwhile in Spain, the eight game goal drought for Cristiano Ronaldo came to an end at the weekend as he became Real Madrid's record scorer in La Liga after hitting five goals in a demolition of Espanyol. Ronaldo now has scored 230 goals in the Spanish top flight, passing Raul's tally of 228, and is now the fourth-highest scorer in the competition's history after just six seasons in La Liga. The Portugal forward hit three inside the first 20

The 30-year-old's record-breaking total has come in just 204 league games for Real following his £80m move from Manchester United in 2009.
