La Vuelta's Thousands

THOUSANDS OF people filled the streets of Torrevieja on Sunday to see the start of the ninth stage of the Tour of Spain. The cycling competition started out from the Old Man of the Sea monument and continued along Paseo de la Libertad, through Los Locos and La Mata before reaching the N322 and the race proper starting shortly thereafter. The streets along the race route, were filled with thousands of people who came for a very brief look at the 190 riders. The entire morning had a festive atmosphere to it. From early one noticed the influx of hundreds of people coming from different parts of Torrevieja and the neighbouring region of Murcia, to see the exhibitors from different teams and enjoy a variety of activities and exhibits prepared for the occasion. Many people decided to get up early to stand beside the fences in the area that housed the

athletes, taking advantage of the proximity to get photographs and autographs. Torrevieja, La Mata, Guardamar del Segura, Santa Pola all saw the cyclists

racing through the Vega Baja with Guardamar being the only other town where the race has been before as it returned to the province after four years of absence. At the end of the 168.3

kilometres in Cumbre del Sol, Dutch rider Tom Dumoulin won the stage in 4h 09' 55', beating Tour de France double winner in the last 50 metres, into second place, two seconds behind with Joaquim RodrĂguez coming third. One top rider who did not take part on stage nine was the Slovakian rider Peter Sagan Tinkoff, as he was unable to recover from the fall he suffered on Saturday when he was hit by an auxiliary motorcycle, and he said that the race bikes must be "more careful". The Slovakian rider Peter Sagan Tinkoff, said: "It is my first occurrence of such an accident. If the bikes are forced to pass between a group of riders they must do so carefully and not recklessly," he stressed. "The safety of cyclists must be an absolute priority and all drivers of vehicles involved with the race should be more attentive," added Sagan.

Costa Blanca to promote cruise tourism WITH THE arrival of the beautiful MS Amadea scheduled for Torrevieja on September 22nd, the Alicante Provincial Council has responded to new trends in this market which has experienced tremendous growth in recent years. Last week Eduardo Dolon met with associations and various business entities of Torrevieja and region to put together a plan of action for the occasion of the arrival of the first cruise ship to visit the city. In order to promote the arrival of visitors to the various ports of the Costa Blanca, the provincial government has decided to include in its strategy to promote a new product line focused on cruise tourism. Thus, the Delegation of Alicante is looking to highlight these new trends in this market. The vice president and deputy of Tourism, Eduardo Dolon, explained that the “aim of this initiative is to turn the province into an international benchmark of cruise tourism, and said that "our intention is to develop the potential for all ports of the province, from the great terminal in Alicante to medium seaports, as an option that many shipping companies and cruise lines contemplate today and also where ships can anchor in the vicinity of a city, such as Benidorm and Torrevieja, where they can

tender passengers ashore," explained Dolon. This new product line will add to the strategy of the Tourism promotion that includes two main territorial axes, Beaches and Interior, as well as seven other channels that include the different experiences that occur in the 141 municipalities that make up the province: Business, Food, Health and Wellness, Golf, education and traditions. "The purpose is to provide a specialized service that meets the expectations and needs of each customer and enables us to promote the Costa Blanca, while intensifying the diversity of its proposals, structure the territory and seasonally adjusted demand, "said Dolon. The new Cruise tourism product will have the assistance of the Provincial Board for national and international trade fairs. Also, in the coming weeks, the deputy is scheduled to meet with business representatives of this market segment to discuss the launch of this new line of promotion and start working on

the program. The arrival in Torrevieja, this month of its first cruise ship has been the starting point for this new project. Everyone tuned into La Vuelta ON SUNDAY, the coast of the Costa Blanca reached a worldwide TV and internet audience. Of the event, President of the provincial government, Cesar Sanchez said: "This weekend the image of the Costa Blanca was broadcast to more than 190 countries, virtually everywhere in the world.", in reference to the visual impact generated by the ninth stage of the Tour of Spain, that took place on Sunday August 30th and was run entirely in the Alicante province. Last week, Sanchez was out promoting La Vuelta, that started in the city of Torrevieja and ended at the Cumbre del Sol in Poble Nou de

Benitachell, after passing through Guardamar del Segura, Santa Pola, El Altet (Elche), Alicante, Sant Joan d'Alacant, El Campello, Villajoyosa, Benidorm, Altea, Calpe, Teulada-Moraira, Javea and Gata de Gorgos are other municipalities that make up this journey of 168.3 kilometres. The promotional aspect of having the Ninth Stage here promoted the worldwide image of the Costa Blanca landscape, tourism plus the rich heritage and treasures of the Costa Blanca. "One of the biggest ventures of the new provincial government is the sports tourism. We will work to spread news of

OFIPOL up and running

our territory and to promote the value of our tourism and, there's no doubt, that an event like this, which has a major impact on our economy and in our promotion, is a clear example of what we can do. Moreover, these initiatives allow us to bring the image of the Costa Blanca to countries that are very important to attract new tourists," said the President. In addition, Cesar Sanchez highlighted the program of activities that the Costa Blanca Tourist Board organized for the weekend to mark the passage of the Tour. The unit also had a virtual simulator of the last kilometre of Sunday's stage, where visitors competed on a bike to see who could cover the last mile in the

shortest time." Tourism is the heart of the economy of our province and also foundation of the welfare of the people. Therefore, we will continue working in this direction, because our priority is job creation and that, in addition to generating the other productive sectors, with tourism," said the President.

THE MAYOR of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, visited the Documentation and Immigration office of the city, located in the National Police Station office. He met with the Head of Unit, Inspector Sebastian Garcia who briefed the Mayor on the work and services provided in these facilities, including records of the number of visits and caseloads, as well as the process of processing DNI, NIE and Passport applications. Dolon said he found: "good spirit among this group of professionals who do their job and I took the opportunity to congratulate them on the recent

successes they have achieved in different operations, some of them carried out jointly with the Policia Local on Aliens related issues." In July 2014, the Secretary of State for Security, Francisco Martinez Vazquez, inaugurated the new Immigration and Documentation Unit of the National Police. This new office, does not only issue documentation to Spanish citizens (DNI and passports), but also issues certain documents to foreign citizens residing in Spain, which means that unusually, in the same physical space, documents can be processed for both Spanish and foreign citizens.

Mayor visits National Police office

THE NEW OFIPOL unit is fully operational on Torrevieja's seafront. This is the only unit in Spain managed by the City's Guardia Civil with the only other unit, managed by the National Police in Málaga. OFIPOL is an innovative project developed in Spain and designed not just for Spain, but to be offered to international markets, as a public safety pioneer internationally. The idea is to change the normal management of cases and the reporting of incidents between police forces and citizens. OFIPOL enables both Spanish citizens, foreign residents and tourists, plus those with disabilities, such as the deaf, blind or wheelchair bound, a comprehensive system of access and immediate connection to police assistance. The unit is open permanently, 24 hours 365 days a year. Assistance is offered in Spanish and many official languages that are the most used by foreigners. OFIPOL System is located in the Paseo Vista Alegre. Upon entry, a video conferencing screen is turned on and you have direct, one to one communication, with the Guardia Civil HQ. The unit has a panic button that not only locks down

the unit but immediately informs patrols of an emergency situation and Guardia Civil officers will be at the OFIPOL within minutes. Video calling all takes place in real time and allows for criminal and administrative complaints to take place from the unit. Inside there is a document scanner, as you will need your ID, a passport, DNI or driving licence, unless you hit the panic button, in which case you can provide these later. This system, once implemented throughout Spain, will impact heavily on reducing costs and allow the optimization of human and material resources. The use of OFIPOL is very simple: Once inside the cabin starts the protocol of receipt of the complaint in verbal form (except deaf who will be through sign language where appropriate). The police officer will request user identification through a certified document. Once the complaint is processed, the system will issue two receipts, one for the user and another you you to sign, which you shall deposit in the special mailbox installed inside the unit. In short, it is a system of technological innovation applied to public safety.

Government team blocks payments THURSDAY'S TORREVIEJA Council meeting was another heated affair, and generally without resolution. The Councillor of Finance, Jose Hurtado said that many bills will not be paid because; "they are riddled with irregularities.” The payment of 1,237,898 euros to business suppliers and companies will now have to remain for another day. The vote to pay the outstanding bills by the Finance Committee, was rejected by twelve vote’s municipal government, while the two councillors from the C's of abstained and the eleven councillors of the PP voted for. The expenses are part of the file related to services and supplies last year and therefore the management of the previous municipal government of the PP and although the commission the municipal government voted in favour, apparently this was to be the only point to be discussed at the session. The Councillor of Finance, Jose Hurtado, said that the bills to be paid suffer from "failure of some essential requirements, invoices without a contract or lack of budget allocation and some expenses, or for several reasons." The session was also attended by parents concerned about grants for school buses. The deputy spokesman of the Partido Popular, Joaquín Albaladejo, explained that the payments are for:

"a total of 16 services, of which 7 absorb almost the entire amount," adding that it is money that is already in the budget and leaves a positive balance from last year. He also responded to the absence of contracts saying that: "many of them were already initiated and are now in their final phase, or already finished." The plenary hall was crowded by the attendance of many parents of children of school age to ask about why,

for the first time, parents have to pay the cost of travel to the end of the school year and then, request individualized assistance, in the hope they will get some or all of it refunded. One of those in attendance was Patricia Muñoz, President of the local branch of the Fapa Gabriel Miró along with many mothers, who finally received an answer from the mayor who promised to hold a meeting with them in order to explain the situation facing these grants. The session was not without its moments of tension. Joaquín Albaladejo criticised the municipal government who have refused the extension of time to a popular nightclub and about the payments for school transport. He also claimed that there have been: “dozens of changes made to the budget." The mayor, José Manuel Dolon said that "we are paying for their (PP) mistakes" and said that "the budget is in effect theirs, not ours." In another vein, the proposal of paying remuneration to the councillors of PP who they have agreed to split the three salary payments granted plenary Organization, by six half dedications, was approved. The question and answer session mainly went on about the finance of school buses and the contracts for the next employment workshop, among others.

Earthquake of 1.8 ° in Torrevieja ON SATURDAY at 5.21pm, Torrevieja felt a slight rumble as the latest earthquake hit the region. It was a just a small one of 1.8 ° on the Richter scale. This occurred in Southeast Torrevieja, about ten kilometres from the coast and 4,000 meters deep. Although shortlived, about three seconds, this was catalogued in the III level and many people did feel it. Recent earthquakes that have been felt in the city, have occurred in virtually the same place. Given the low intensity they have not produced any damage nor any cause for alarm was triggered. These small earthquakes are actually good for the region, as each one relieves a built up of pressure and makes away any build up in pressure that might result in a major quake. Stepping back in time, Torrevieja and other towns in

the region, witnessed one of the largest Earthquakes on the Spanish mainland on Saturday, 21st March 1829 at 6.15 pm, with a reading of 6.6 on the Richter scale. In those days, when Torrevieja was primarily nothing more than a small fishing and boat building village, along with the salt industry, houses with several floors, without any foundations, which were supported by weak wood beams and located in narrow streets, simply fell over with their inhabitants inside. In Torrevieja, the town was absolutely flattened. All the houses were knocked down and towns such as Guardamar had to be redesigned and Almoradi, not Torrevieja, was the most affected town and suffered the most damage. A total of 2,965 houses were destroyed and another 2,396 houses were affected by this

Passion in the Plaza IT WAS a hot night in Torrevieja on Thursday, in more ways than one. Taking advantage of the cool breeze from the Mediterranean and after a quick cooling off in the Town's fountain, a young couple got a little frisky and decided to enjoy a 'quickie' on the Gaudi style seat in the very early hours of the morning. A passer-by, took a few seconds of video on their mobile phone, which then spread like wildfire around social networks, mainly on Whatsapp. Jumping to attention, the Guardia Civil has already identified and denounced the couple that enjoyed their moment of passion in the seafront plaza. The Guardia Civil has identified and reported the young couple who were carried away by a moment of passion. Apparently, the couple, when approached by the Guardia Civil, told the officers to please leave, while they continued with their moment of passion. The story has also caught the attention of the British press, with making the pages of the Daily Mail, Sun, Daily Star and others, keeping Torrevieja's name in the public eye, even if not for all the right reasons. The facts have been brought to the attention of the local Government who may now file a financial penalty for disorderly conduct based on the Public Safety Act. Apparently they could be fined up to 600 euros.

Typically, the Daily Mail and others have tried to make something out of the fact that this is a popular tourist spot, which although it is, at 6.30am, everything in the area was closed. The incident occurred at dawn in the Plaza Waldo Calero, one of the most popular tourist areas of Torrevieja that's surrounded by restaurants and cafes, near the popular hippy market and close to the Casino. However, none of these attractions were open at the time. The square is named after the Waldo Calero Idiarte. Torrevieja's 64th Mayor, who held the position from February 8th, 1924 to March 26th, 1929. The couple apparently were carried away by the moment and enjoyed a few moments of passion on one of the benches that's coated with white and blue ceramic tiles, inspired by the style of Gaudí that appears in many of the postcards sold in souvenir shops. The controversial video has been sent to many, if not all the councillors who are part of the government team, on both sides, who have assessed the facts and tried to balance their laughter and indignation of the act, and the image it gives of the city. As one local commentator pointed out, this is the sort of thing that happens nightly on the beaches of Magaluf and other popular tourist resorts, and so it's probably surprising that it rarely has happened in Torrevieja.

earthquake. There was a total of 386 dead victims and 375 injured. Every year in Almoradi, its inhabitant’s parade with the Saint called San Emigdio, who’s the patron saint for earthquakes, and pray to the memory of all victims. The 1829 earthquake remains so deeply rooted in the Vega Baja’s people minds that, when the 3.6 magnitude earthquake of August 2008 took place, the Torrevieja Council received dozens of requests to take out San Emigdio to the street, and he was accompanied by a thousand people of the whole region. In Torrevieja, literally the only building left standing was the Inmaculada Church, before the two towers were added. This was one of the few stone built buildings in the town and was rebuilt into the church we see today.

The real cost of back to school WITHIN THE next two weeks, if they have not done so already, Spanish schools will be back in action but even those going to public school, comes with a cost. In Valencia an average price of 740 euros per child is spent on heading back to school as families spend somewhere between 428 and 923 euros per school, according to a report by the Provincial Association of Housewives and Consumers Tyrius. This report studies the economic impact for Valencia with the next academic year beginning on September 10th for the smaller ones and then a day later for Middle and High School students. The study shows that the average expenditure for a family is 923 euros in Secondary School; 712 euros in Primary and 428 euros for students in kindergarten. As regards textbooks, this study shows that the Valencian average is one of 248 euros per child is spent. However, book exchanges between members of the same family, buying used books or the availing oneself by visiting the used book banks, can help reduce the costs "significantly" on the purchase of a book, as explained Tyrius. However, as explained by the association, the used book solution is not always possible, as there are many schools that have opted for the progressive introduction of tablets, which replace paper textbooks. Although this methodology has advantages, Tyrius noted that this can represent a significant additional cost for families, since the first year, parents will have to pay around 400 euros for the tablet, plus the license fee of the books, with the disadvantage, that once the school year is over, the

license expires so that the books cannot be passed, or reused, even if the child has to repeat the same year and use the same books again. Although they admit that the purchase of this device, will be amortized in the following courses. In this sense, Tyrius say they have found that the tablets are more profitable in the High School than Primary, because licenses of electronic books and the acquisition of the tablet is "a little cheaper". The books are cheaper for younger Children, whose average cost is 106 euros. In contrast, the most expensive stage is the secondary, where the average expenditure would rise to 325 euros. Primary and high schools amount to 257 and 302 euros, respectively. However, the association said it should be borne in mind that the prices of books are subject to change depending on the type of methodology of work of the centre, reaching up to 100 euros.

As for clothing expenses, the study shows that there is little difference between the cost of the course from centres where it is compulsory to wear the uniform, as most of these are private or subsidized schools or nurseries and for those without a uniform code. The average cost of a uniform is 375 to 394 euros. The average cost of this in early childhood education is 292 euros, 361 Primary and secondary and high schools, 424. The average spending on clothes and shoes for Primary school without uniformity would be 299 euros. School supplies are another unavoidable expense with every family spending an average of 109 euros. Thus, a minor enrolled in primary will have to make an average expenditure of 125 euros, while if secondary or high school studies this figure will rise to 142. However, savings can be made in this department according to the association, by using the excess material that's been kept in good condition from previous years and comparing prices between different establishments. In this way, you can decrease costs from between 30 and 40 percent. To save on 'going back to school', Tyrius recommend checking everything that you can take advantage of the previous year: textbooks from siblings or friends, dictionaries, uniform, clothes, shoes and school supplies. Also, check the book banks for books you have to buy, compare prices, for school supplies such as uniforms, and as far as possible, stagger purchases. Thus, a family could lower the initial budget by 30 to 50 percent, as extracted from the study by the Provincial Association of Housewives and Consumers.

Silence is golden as more discos close IT WOULD seem that Torrevieja's Councillor for Tourism, Activities and Urbanismo, Fanny Serrano, is a woman on a mission. That mission at the moment seems to be to try and close down various popular discos, night clubs and entertainment areas. The latest victims of her closure campaign are the emblematic Tropic Club 222 at the end of Playa de los Locos and the newly opened Oasis Gardens, opposite the Aqua Park. La Asociación de Discotecas; The Provincial Association of Clubs and Discotheques (Asabal) endorsed the decision of the council of Torrevieja to close four clubs over the past two weeks and considers that the local government is fulfilling its obligation to apply existing regulations on safety and opening schedules allowed. In contrast, the former mayor of Torrevieja and PP councillor, Eduardo Dolon, has been critical of the decision and assessed that the actions of the Pentapartito Government are destroying the nightlife in the city, causing so far the dismissal of more than 200 workers. The closure of four of the most popular nightclubs in the town during the last ten days has caused great controversy in the coastal town where many voices have been raised in both in favour and against the decrees of

Kids Wreck Diving IT WAS a fun day on and under the water for 80 children who participated in the "The Uluburun shipwreck: A Shipwreck In Your Swimming Pool" on Wednesday. A small part of the outdoor municipal pool became a genuine forum for

closure. In this sense, it is the group of entrepreneurs Asabal which is publicly supporting measures from the Department of activities directed by Fanny Serrano. So much so that a few days ago, when the closure of nightclubs Bacchanal and Vela Beach took place, based on reports from the Guardia Civil, Asabal urged the Councillor to enact more closures for violating local times. Eduardo Dolon, criticised the Pentapartito and said: "they are changing the youth leisure offer of the city" and also is doing so during the most important month in terms of tourism. "The policy being applied has already caused more than 200 laid-off workers while employers

The informative session recreated the dive site in it’s their original size and accuracy of the oldest underwater archaeological site in the world. It is located in the Mediterranean just off the coast of Bodrum in Turkey. The Uluburun, sank at the end of the Bronze Age, about 3,400 BC and was discovered by a sponge diver purely by chance in 1984. Torrevieja's Councillor for Sport, Pablo Samper was also on hand during the morning session to meet with the project instructors and see for himself the fun the children were having on this sport educational program, more of which Samper hopes to add to the offering by the Sports Depatment in Torrevieja.

are considering investing in other municipalities," Dolon said. It appreciated that the closure of nightclubs "has the only intention of trying to make people think that the previous government team favoured certain employers, when this is completely false. At all times the criterion has been respected and reports of municipal technicians in implementing measures.” The wave of closures for various safety deficiencies is just one factor in the closing of the 222 'Tropic Bar''. 222 has also been cited with failure to comply with noise regulations. This time the court injunctions did not prevent the closure of 222 due to safety deficiencies after numerous reports from the Guardia Civil and the Policia Local. The closing decree was conducted by the Department of Activities under Fanny Serrano. The Chill Out 'Oasis Garden' terrace, which opened in early summer by the roundabout Aquópolis Park was also sealed, due to lack of a business license and violating the rules on security. Social networks have been abuzz with news of the closure of these four clubs with the threat of others to follow. One commentator noted than on Social Networks that because of the closures, they have already nicknamed the new Councillor, "Fanny Serrado" or 'Fanny Serrated' due to her knife edge cuts.

Los Náufragos death

A FINNISH woman died on Saturday in the area Playa Los Náufragos of Torrevieja. The incident apparently occurred at around 10.15am before lifeguard services had begun. The lady was bathing in the company of her husband, a son and a grandson when, for unknown reasons, she was found unconscious. A unit of the Urgent Care Service (SAMU) immediately responded and provided CPR however she did not respond to stimuli. It is unknown if the deceased suffered some type of heart attack that could have caused the drowning. This is the third death recorded in Torrevieja in recent days in similar circumstances. On 25th August, a man of 78 years died while swimming on the beach at Acequión and on Thursday 27th another woman of 75 years died at the southern end of the beach at La Mata in Torrevieja.

Austin Slack: a star in the making AUSTIN SLACK is just 15 but has rock superstar written all over him. Local guitarist, fifteen year old Austin Slack played a guest spot with MANÁ, in Benidorm on Friday night, one of the biggest rock bands in the Spanishspeaking world. Austin was on the stage of the Estadio Municipal de Foietes in Benidorm, where the band performed as part of their sell-out tour of Spain 2015. Hailing from Mexico, Maná were formed in 1986 and play a mixture of pop, rock, Latin pop, reggae, calypso and ska. They currently have a four-piece line – up consisting of Fher Olvera (lead vocals/guitar), Sergio Vallin (guitar), Juan Calleros (bass guitar) and Alex Gonzalez (drums, backing vocals). During their nearly 30-year history the band have won many awards including 4 Grammy awards, 7 Latin Grammy awards and 5 MTV music video awards. They are widely acknowledged as one of the biggest bands ever to come out of Latin America. They have released many albums over the years including the 1992 album ‘¿Donde Jugaran Los Niños?’ (Where will the children play?) which has sold more than 8 million copies, making it THE bestselling Spanish language rock album ever. Others include ‘Falta Amor’ (their first, in 1990), ‘Cuando Los Angeles Lloran’, ‘Sueños Liquidos’, ‘Revolucion de Amor’, ‘Amar es Combatir’ and their most recent one ‘Cama Incendiada’, released at the start of this year. In total they have sold more than 40 million albums worldwide. The band has achieved success not only in Latin American countries but also in Australia, the U.S.A, Western Europe, the Middle East and Asia. They have regularly played to packed crowds in Madison Square Gardens in New York. Other venues on their current tour of Spain include Malaga, Madrid, Barcelona and Barkalado (Basque Country). Later in the year they will be playing some dates in their native Mexico. In February 2016 they are booked to play in Buenos Aires,

Argentina. No other Latin rock act consistently sells more albums and concert tickets than Maná. And so to Austin….. Known to all of his friends and fans as “El Niño Magnetico”, Austin Slack was born in the U.K. in Rotherham and raised on music with his dad and Manager, Bryn, encouraging his growing interest from an early age. The family moved to Caravaca de la Cruz, Murcia from Rotherham when Austin was four, where he grew up listening to Spanish Acts. His dad bought him his first Spanish guitar when he was only nine. He did take some private guitar lessons, and also attended a workshop with the Animeros of Caravaca, but Austin maintains that his best teaching tool was the internet, and he would sit and watch hours and hours’ worth of tutorial videos on YouTube. It soon became apparent that Austin was a natural, and he began to receive invites to perform and record material with other musicians, including the band ‘Neuman’; and Spanish Indie Rockers ‘Love of Lesbian’, who invited him to join them for a few songs during their two sold out concerts in Murcia. Austin cites Fito y

Fitipaldis, Mark Knopfler, Jimi Hendrix and Muse as his main influences. Until very recently dad Bryn Slack, mum Lisa and little sister Mariola were on tenterhooks awaiting confirmation that Austin was going to get this opportunity and Bryn was finding it extremely hard to mask the pride behind his - to the world at large - stone face when asked the name of the band, having decided not to release details until confirmation had been received. He said: “Austin has been invited to play with a world-renowned band on the biggest stage of his life – and perform a guitar solo spot to a packed football stadium. It doesn’t get much better than that for anyone, let alone someone who is just fifteen years old.” He could have added that, even if it didn’t happen – the fact that his son was even being considered for such a prestigious gig surely means a bright and very rosy future for the ‘Magnetic Boychild’ from Caravaca. Fifteen year old Austin has rocketed to local celebrity status since becoming part of Murcia band ‘THE STREETERS’ who have become very well-known throughout the Costa Blanca, Costa Calida and Murcia areas during the last 12

months or so. They have recently released their first EP called ‘Tainted Love’ which consists of several different versions of this well-known 1980s song. The band were featured in a recent edition of this newspaper and, along with Austin on guitar, comprises Sergio Vezas on drums and Oscar Fernandez Parada on bass guitar and lead vocals. In addition to their musical, vocal and entertainment skills the name of The Streeters has become synonymous with their tireless work for various charities. Their most notable achievement so far in this field was being a pivotal part of raising many thousands of euros for ‘ROCK AGAINST CANCER’ which was in aid of Spain’s biggest cancer charity. As part of this venture Bryn personally acquired and then oversaw the sale of hundreds of T Shirts and thousands of guitar plectrums with the legend ‘Rock Against Cancer’ inscribed on them. There plectrums are now many, many people on the Costa Blanca who are the proud owners of one or more of these, most of whom have never played a guitar in their lives. Such is the extent of Bryn’s power of persuasion. Austin, of course, has been an integral part of all this. The band is managed and promoted by Bryn, who has worked with many famous names in the music industry including Bruce Springsteen. No doubt his contacts in the business, not to mention those legendary powers of persuasion, will have helped secure this rare but thoroughly-deserved opportunity for Austin. You would think that all this sudden ‘fame’ would turn a young man’s head because, after all, famous rock and roll guitar players are synonymous with bad boy behaviour, especially in the early stages of their careers. However talking to Austin is a breath of fresh air. He is an immensely likeable young man with his feet planted firmly on the ground. He likes nothing more than playing his guitar and jamming along with other musicians… .oh and chocolate hob nobs. Austin with his band The Streeters can be booked direct via the artistsdirect-spain website – in fact you can also download their free EP ‘Tainted Love’ and current CD all of which obviously feature Austin’s guitar skills. Not all of us got to go Austin’s gig of a lifetime, but you can see videos on the artistsdirect-spain of this talented musician performing with his band mates and who knows – we may be lucky enough to be showing video of his performance with Manà as well. Artists Direct – Spain is a website site dedicated to promoting the booking of acts direct up and down the whole of Costa Blanca and Costa Calida.

Ancient tomb replaced Spain’s economy growing by picnic table at pre-crisis levels again

It is sometimes difficult enough to get a decent builder who will turn up on time and finish a project somewhere close to the initial quote. It also helps if they do not destroy a 6,000-year-old Neolithic tomb. But that is exactly what happened in the town of Cristovo de Cea in northern Spain. Mistaking the archaeological monument for a pile of old stones, builders broke up the tomb and replaced it with a white concrete picnic bench. Authorities in Galicia are investigating the destruction of the relic, especially as it was supposed to have been protected under heritage rules. “The rolled concrete and modern picnic bench have caused irreparable damage, replacing what was a prehistoric cemetery of the first inhabitants of Cea,” said a local environmental group, Grupo Ecolozista Outeiro, after it first reported the incident.

It seems, however, that not all of the blame can be levelled at the builders, because it appears that even the town’s mayor had no idea that the site was historically important. “No one told me, neither [the] heritage [department] nor the environmental group,” Jose Luis Valladores said “The site wasn’t even marked, and the logical thing would have been for them to get in contact with the local council so that we could have taken measures to protect the site.” The public prosecutor has launched an inquiry into whether there was any criminal wrongdoing. It is not the first time something of historical importance has been ruined in Spain. In 2012, Cecilia Gimeneza, then 82, tried unsuccessfully to restore a fresco – the Ecce Homo portrait of Christ – in the Sanctuary of Mercy church in Borja despite having no known qualifications.

The Spanish economy grew 1.0% in the second quarter of 2015, according to data released Thursday by the National Statistics Institute (INE). The figure is one tenth of a point higher than in the first quarter, and the highest in the last eight years, reflecting the kind of growth experienced prior to Spain’s economic crisis. Consumers and investors are driving the renewed economic expansion. Second-quarter household consumption rose 1% on an annual basis, representing the ninth consecutive quarter of growth. Meanwhile, investment, particularly in capital goods and cultivated assets,

expanded 2.2% from April to June. After years of stagnation, public spending also advanced 0.4%, coinciding with the local and regional elections held in May. The pace of GDP growth increased 3.1% from the same period in 2014. Domestic demand contributed 3.3 points to annual GDP growth in the second quarter of 2015, a rise of two tenths of a point from the January-to-March period. Employment grew at a pace of 2.9%, a tenth of a point up from the first quarter, although the jobless rate is still around 22 percent, one of the highest in the European Union.

Several Banks Agree Not to Charge TwoEuro Cashpoint Charge to Non-Clients A small number of banks – namely Caixabank, BBVA and Santander – have come under fire recently for deciding to charge non-clients a fee of 2 euro for withdrawing money through any of their cashpoints across the country. This decision is controversial and is being studied by the EU as this procedure means that non-clients are charged twice for the same transaction – once by their own bank and secondly by the bank issuing the money. The Bank of Spain has already ruled against it. The first entity to announce the application of this new two-euro cashpoint charge was Caixabank. BBVA followed and will start to charge non-clients from September, while Banco Santander also recently made the announcement and will charge non-clients from the end of next month or in October. However, not all banks have decided to follow this lead, and now nine entities have agreed not to do so and oppose this measure. They are: Unicaja, Ibercaja, Liberbank, Abanca, Kutxabank, BMN and Evo Banco – all entities linked to the Euro 6000 network – together with Bankia and Banco Sabadell. While there are fewer banks in existence than before the economic crisis, competition between them is greater, especially for smaller entities. This is probably why this group of not so major banks has decided to stand against this unpopular new

policy, and by doing so most likely keep their customers and perhaps even attract a few new ones in the process. At the moment, the majority of banks have given some indication as to which side they will join. However, Banco Popular is the main one that is undecided. Popular is part of the 4B network, the same as Santander, so it is highly likely that it too will opt for the two-euro charge to non-clients. In spite of the decision not to charge noncustomers for withdrawing cash from their machines, the Euro 6000 group, Bankia and Sabadell could impose a fee for doing so on the customers of Caixabank, BBVA and Santander, although initially it seems that they won’t. And, while for the time being it is only three entities that have decided to levy the cashpoint withdrawal transaction, almost 45% of all cashpoints belong to them, making finding a cashpoint where you won’t get penalized twice for withdrawing money nearly twice as difficult.

Spanish News 11 Spaniard Decrypts Last Message Spanish airport workers set from World War II to Be Decoded for September strikes

www.coastridersl.com www.coastrider.net CoastRider - Edition 470 562 - March September 5th 2013 1st 2015

Dídac Sánchez, a young 22-year-old Spaniard, has managed to do what many others have found impossible for the last 30 years. He has cracked the code and decrypted the last message still to be deciphered from the Second World War. What’s more, he has challenged others to work out the structure of that code and will reward anyone that does with 25,000 euro. After three years of investigation and an investment of 1.5 million euro, Sánchez has created a new security software called 4YEO (ForYourEyesOnly), based on the same encryption system of the message. Dídac claims that his new software, which is obviously more technologically advanced and sophisticated that the method used during the war, is one of the safest and secure in the whole world. This software, which is apparently unbreakable, will be launched onto the market next year and will allow any text, document, email, Whatsapp message, telephone call or SMS to be encrypted, and only enabling the sender and the reader to discover its meaning. Sánchez has published a message on his webpage (www.4yeosoftware.com) using the same code and structure used

by the British and French intelligence during the war and has challenged others to decipher it, agreeing to hand over the sum of 25,000 euro to anyone that is able to. The competition begins today and concludes on 31 December 2015. In 1982, a resident from Surrey, David Martin, was carrying out renovations on his home when he discovered the skeleton of a carrier pigeon that still had a message capsule attached to its leg in his chimney. The tube contained the text that intelligence services from across the globe have been unable to decipher to this day. It is believed that the message was sent just a few days before the Allied forces invaded Normandy in June 1944 (D-Day), and that the pigeon found in David’s Martin’s chimney carried this message but never made its destination, probably Bletchley Park, due to dying from exhaustion.

The strikes are set to take place throughout September Passengers face delays after four strikes, starting next Friday, were announced by Spanish unions. They will take place at Madrid airport on September 4, 11, 18 and 25 from 4:30am to 7:30am and 7:30pm to 9:30 pm. Walkouts will also be staged at Barcelona, Malaga, Palma and Alicante airports next month - while the Workers' Commission Union said easyJet and Vuelling passengers would be most affected by the strikes. Union bosses blamed the action on a decision by handling firm Menzies Aviation Iberica to postpone a collective bargaining agreement after ongoing negotiations. In June, an air traffic controllers' strike

in Spain went under the radar - after it had been expected to cause sheer chaos for holidaymakers. Most controllers were ordered to work after the Spanish government imposed a 70 per cent minimum service. June's strikes - which were the first since 1989 - were a protest against a decision to reprimand 61 controllers who shut down Barcelona's airspace back in 2010. The Spanish military had to be called in to take over air traffic control after civilian staff called in sick en masse in a dispute with the airport authority Aena over hours and working conditions. Spain is not the only European destination that poses chaos for British holidayers. The migrant crisis in Calais has caused havoc to Brits trying to get to and from France on the EuroTunnel. Thousands of migrants have attempted to reach the UK through the Channel Tunnel, risking their lives and halting travel businesses, leaving hundreds of people facing delays.

Made in Torrevieja: The Cucaracha Club FILMING IS now complete on this crowdfunded British Film but a final push is needed to complete and pay for the editing ready for release. Putting Torrevieja firmly on the map, the film, with a host of locals acting and taking part and also starring Tom Watt, (Lofty in EastEnders)has been filmed in the area with many local businesses contributing in many different ways including providing various props such as cars, jet skis, submarine, boats and aircraft – all for free. Even the police in Torrevieja got involved in the acting and gave filming a helping hand. Many bars in the Torrevieja area also feature in the film. All offers of help will be rewarded with a mention in the film credits. The Cucaracha Club is a spy thriller where the main character is forced out of

retirement when an ambassador’s children are kidnapped. Our very own Chloe Leigh plays the part of a rock chick, club singer, who has a history with the main character. Chloe was offered the part after the lead actor, Billie Gaddess, saw some of her performances on Facebook. To help attract the funding needed to complete the project and be in a position to premiere the film, the title track recorded by Chloe Leigh has now been released and is attracting international air play on some major stations. A haunting catchy melody - the single is available to buy online at Spotify, Amazon, iTunes and Google. To coincide with the release of the single – a trailer of the film is also available on Youtube. There are future plans to release an

album with songs written by local artists and sung by Chloe as well as a second film or possibly a short series. A calendar is also to go on sale with proceeds from the sales going towards getting the editing done. Any other businesses or local people wishing to add their names to the credits and help out can contact Siesta Productions. Former Mayor Eduardo Dolon offered Torrevieja's Municipal theatre as a venue for Chloe to headline a concert to coincide with the premiere of the film. Despite political changes at the mayor’s office, it is hoped that the release of the film will enhance Torrevieja as a

destination, and the concert will go ahead, either in the Municipal Theatre or Virgen del Carmen, once the film premiere is announced. This has been a major undertaking and one of those crowdfunded projects that is now extremely close to coming to fruition. Help from local people, local businesses and fund raising have all pushed this project toward the finishing line, it’s on the final straight and just needs one last sight of the whip to cross the line. Go watch the video and download the title track – let’s get this film finally stamped – Made in Torrevieja. More info on the film, the production, contact details and how you can still become a valuable partner in the production, available by searching on Facebook for Siesta Productions or: www.siesta.productions.

Technology 13 Plenty of bang for your buck The SpinChill helps cool your drink down in no time at all

In many parts of the world at the moment, it is not the most economically vibrant of times. Not only are currencies depreciating in selected regions around the globe, there are also internal, domestic issues such as an ailing stock market or a property downturn that has set the tone for a negative financial outlook, and this has led to a heightened level of awareness for folks to tighten their belts – and to make sure that every single penny spent would be able to deliver maximum returns. Archos of France knows this, which is why they have rolled out not one, but a pair of 5″ smartphones that will come with hardware specifications to keep you happy, without breaking the bank. The asking price for each of these smartphones? We are looking at a mere £99 each, now how about that? The first of the two would be the Archos 50 Cesium that will arrive with Windows 10 right out of the box, whereas those who would prefer to do their mobile work on the Android platform can always settle for the Archos 50e Helium, where it will be powered by Android 5.1 Lollipop. Sounds like the same kind of modus operandi when Archos rolled out the Helium Plus 50 and Helium Plus 55

handsets earlier this year. The Archos 50 Cesium and 50e Helium smartphones are more or less similar when it comes to their list of hardware specifications, where common denominators between the two would include a 5” HD IPS display that renders bright, realistic colours and allows wide viewing angles. As for the chip that keeps everything running together, it would be 1.1Ghz quad-core processors from Qualcomm. There will also be 4G/LTE connectivity thrown into the mix, in addition to a sleek outer design with rounded edges and a metal frame. So, between the two devices, which one would you settle for as a road warrior?

When you want an icy cold beverage from a can or bottle, you would normally go to the refrigerator and pull out your drink of choice. Of course, there’s always the occasion where you don’t have that luxury. Say you’re on a picnic, and haven’t had enough time for it to cool, or ran out, and had to buy more at the store, but also haven’t had the time to let it chill. How are you supposed to enjoy the little things in life if your drink isn’t cold?! If you have the patience of a six year old and want cold drinks in a minute or less, then this SpinChill can help you with that. This will drop the temperature of whatever can of liquid you’re trying to chill by 45 degrees in one minute. It is pocket-sized for those that venture far

from the fridge more often than not, and can chill up to 300 cans before needing new batteries. We all know that anything carbonated doesn’t like to be shaken or stirred, so this has been created to spin the can or bottle smoothly so that nothing will explode or make too much foam. While this can work on beer and wine bottles, it will take significantly more time to work its magic. Glass bottles with 12 ounces of liquid take 3 minutes, and wine bottles take 5 minutes. This is only going to cost you around $20, but you’ll need 4AA batteries handy at all times in case this dies on you, because no one wants a warm drink. Torrevieja's sinking image SINCE THE new Pentapartido government took over rule in Torrevieja, it can hardly be said that the tourist image of the city has improved. Concerts have been cancelled. The summer parade cancelled. Inacurate information given out about the cruise ship arrival. Lack of information about La Vuelta. Closure of various clubs and fairground activities during the height of summer. And the list goes on according to Partido Popular deputy spokesman Joaquín Albaladejo. Joaquín Albaladejo says the pentapartito is providing a

sinking image of the town hall and only they are responsible for this. The councilman and deputy spokesman of the PP in the City of Torrevieja, Joaquín Albaladejo, said last week that in 75 days, the pentapartito has damaged the image of the city and as the entity in charge, they hold responsibility for the sinking image of Torrevieja. Albaladejo says that it's the irresponsibility of the Government of Torrevieja to not cover the financial commitments of the city, due to various business over the last term in office. This bad image is

going to have an effect and be expensive for all torrevejenses in the long run. Albaladejo regrets the diabolical situation where at present, all municipal technicians, who in their capacity as economic operators of services to the city will not be paid. But at the same time, they have to pay all their staff and business expenses for providing a services to the city of Torrevieja. Joaquín Albaladejo added: “this is a government that is genetically prepared to do damage to the town of Torrevieja, led by a mayor whose

greatest merit was speaking on 'ill' on national television of his city. And he is still the only mayor in all of Spain to say bad things about the city he now controls. He has given his approval of invoices by voting in favour with all his councillors of his government team, then allows the Councillor for Finance and Deputy Mayor, José

Hurtado, to lie to reporters at a press conference saying they have to pay these bills and then in the council meeting they vote the opposite.” Finally, Albaladejo said that the chaos and inconsistency of Jose Manuel Dolon and his government, is at the forefront of the lack of political leadership of the City of Torrevieja.

Back Stage with Sharni Artists Direct slipped back stage and had a chat with Sharni Crowson. Sharni entertains in venues all along the Costa Blanca South & North. There cannot be many who have not seen this charismatic singer. Performing her Diva Songbook, along with many other great songs, she performs hits by Barbara Streisand, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Dusty Springfield. Sharni is a professional singer and entertainer with a fairly full diary, only two dates still up for grabs between now and Christmas barring any last minute cancellations. Sharni began singing with formal operatic lessons as a young child then diversifying into the band scene at the age of fourteen. The best of both worlds for this special lady then, formal training and a rock n roll band. Sharni has never done anything else other than entertain people – it’s all she ever wanted to do and she still has her dream job. Pretty incredible. Over the years there have been many great artists

that have influenced her but the overriding influence has always been Whitney Houston. When we asked her if she ever suffered stage fright – first there was a small shy giggle and then she told us that she always got nervous before a gig, she sees it as a sign that she wants to perform well and entertain her audiences. Breaking into laughter she admits to a small Bacardi and coke light beforehand, to settle the butterflies, just the one though. Sharni has been performing since 1987 so in all that time, does she have one great moment that really sticks out? ”Oh Yes!” she said, her proudest moment was being asked by the entertainments executive of the Rank Organisation Haven- Warner, at Butlins Group to stop singing in the resident bands, as I was better than their visiting cabarets acts and that I really should think about swapping to cabaret and solo work , as it was causing them a problem. The band should not be better than the cabaret; I think we got that a bit wrong, it was very flattering nonetheless.

Obviously being on stage day in day out there must have been some disasters in your career anything spring to mind? “Yes, my worst moment was this year, thinking I had nodules on my vocal chords as I was losing my voice at the end of every night. Turns out I was just hurting my throat by drinking cold water when I had started to sing, and needed to drink warm water, as soon as the voice is active. It works a treat. No more problems”. We then asked Sharni to draw on all her years in showbiz and tell us through her eyes what would be the best piece of advice she could give to any wannabees or budding performers. Try the couch to 5k challenge Thousands of people across the UK have tried the Couch to 5k programme, and have seen themselves go from couch potato to dedicated runner in just over two months. Late summer and early autumn is a great time to get started – the weather is cool and comfortable enough for running around outdoors, and you can still take advantage of the bright mornings and longer evenings to fit in your training. Ready to run? We share tips to help you try the incredibly popular Couch to 5K running programme, what it is and how you can plan for success. What is Couch to 5k? The Couch to 5k running programme was devised by the NHS and is designed to help people get fitter. Over the course of nine weeks it takes people who are unable to run and trains them so that they become confident runners. The programme involves three runs a week, with one rest day between each run day. They gradually build up in difficulty, and for most of the programme there’s a mix of walking and running. To start with, you’ll be walking more than running, but as the programme progresses and you build up more fitness and stamina, the length of time you run for overtakes walking until you’re running the equivalent of a 5k, without interruptions. The Couch to 5k programme is followed via an audio podcast, meant to be listened to on an MP3 player as you run. In it, a narrator lets you know when to run or walk, and gives you encouragement and tips. The podcast also features music to help keep you moving. Why should you do it? Many people can benefit from running. It’s a great

form of exercise, and compared to going to the gym it’s cheap, too. It’s also easy to fit into your normal routine – you could run in the morning, at lunchtime, or evening, as suits you. Running can help to improve your health and get you fit. It can strengthen your heart and lungs, decrease your risk of heart disease and help to manage your blood pressure. There’s even evidence that it can improve bone density, helping to protect against osteoporosis and other bone diseases. The exercise helps to burn off calories, so it can help you to shift any extra weight that you might be carrying. If you eat healthily while you do the running programme, you’ll be even more likely to drop a few pounds. As well as improving your physical health, running can lift your mood, relieve stress, and for some people

even help with depression. It’s not just that, though. If you take on a challenge like Couch to 5k and succeed you’ll feel a real sense of pride in your accomplishment. Whether you start the programme as a true couch potato or as a keen walker who never thought they would be able to run, you’ll be amazed at yourself after nine weeks. Sticking with the exercise, pushing through mental barriers, and feeling fitter at the end will give you confidence in yourself. It’s a good idea to check with your GP before you take part in any new exercise programme. Top 5 Tips for Running If you decide to take up the Couch to 5k challenge, there are a few things you can do to increase your chance of success. 1. Get the right gear. Running doesn’t need to be expensive, but at the very least you must have proper running trainers. Go to a sports or running shop and get a pair properly fitted. 2. Dress for the weather. Think layers, hat and gloves in cold weather, a cap and water-resistant jacket in the rain, and sunscreen and cotton in the sunshine. 3. Stretch after your run. 4. Run with other people. Make the challenge more fun by taking it up with a friend, or joining a running group. 5. Let people know you’re doing it. You might get more tips from friends, Above all else though, follow the podcast. Don’t be tempted to skip weeks, ignore the advice, or listen to your inner naysayer. Download the podcast and read more about the programme on the NHS Couch to 5K website.

10 factors that affect your metabolism Many of us blame our metabolism when we put on weight. What is your metabolism and what influences it? To stay alive and functioning, your body has to carry out millions of chemical processes, which are collectively known as your metabolism. It's true your metabolism can play a role in weight gain. That's because it influences the amount of energy your body needs at any given point. Take in more energy than you need, and the excess will be stored as fat. Nonetheless many people are quick to blame a 'slow metabolism' for their weight gain, when in fact they need to make better food choices and exercise choices. The biggest component of your metabolism – accounting for 50 to 80 per cent of the energy used each day – is your basal metabolic rate (BMR), which is the energy your body burns just to maintain functioning at rest. (Other influences include how much physical activity you do, and the 'thermic effect' of the food you eat – that is energy you use to digest and absorb your food.) While there are many pills, supplements and foods that claim to boost metabolism and burn fat, most of these claims are unproven, says Tim Crowe, associate professor in nutrition at Deakin University. Even if they did work, they might come with unintended side effects, such as increasing your heart rate, he says. Nonetheless, it can be helpful to know what factors do affect your metabolism, as some of them are within your control. And even knowing you have factors you

can't control may nonetheless be useful as it can motivate you to take extra care to compensate for the issue, perhaps by being more vigilant about your diet and exercise. Here are ten factors that affect BMR and metabolism: 1. Muscle mass – that is, the amount of muscle tissue on your body. Muscle requires more energy to function than fat. So the more muscle tissue you carry, the more energy your body needs just to exist. (While most forms of exercise will help boost muscle, resistance or strength training is most effective: for example lifting weights and exercises that work against the resistance of your body weight such as push ups, squats and lunges.) 2. Age – As you get older, your metabolic rate generally slows. This is partly because of a loss of muscle tissue, and also because of hormonal and neurological

changes. When babies and children go through periods of growth, their metabolism speeds up. 3. Body size – People with bigger bodies tend to have a larger BMR because they usually have larger internal organs and fluid volume to maintain. Taller people have a larger skin surface, which means their bodies may have to work harder to maintain a constant temperature. 4. Gender – As men are usually larger than women, they generally have faster metabolisms. 5. Genetics – This can also play a role in whether you have a slower or faster metabolism, and some genetic disorders can also affect your metabolism. 6. Physical activity – Regular exercise increases muscle mass and encourages your body to burn kilojoules at a faster rate, even when at rest. 7. Hormonal factors – Hormonal imbalances caused by certain conditions, including hypo- and hyperthyroidism, can affect your metabolism. 8. Environmental factors – The weather can also have an effect on your metabolism; if it is very cold or very hot, your body has to work harder to maintain its normal temperature and that increases the metabolic rate. 9. Drugs – Caffeine and nicotine can increase your metabolic rate, while medications including some antidepressants and anabolic steroids can contribute to weight gain regardless of what you eat. 10. Diet – Certain aspects of your diet can also affect metabolism. For instance if you don't have enough iodine for optimal thyroid function, it can slow down your metabolism.

Top tips for ageing well Don't want to get sick, frail or dotty as you age? There's a lot you can do to improve your odds of maintaining good quality of life as you get older. News we're living longer is heartening to many of us. But the idea our extra years might not all be healthy is a sobering reality. Heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and cognitive problems are all more common as we get older and the increased risk often starts in mid life or earlier. The great news is there's much you can do to enhance your complete physical, mental and social wellbeing in later life, says the University of Melbourne's Associate Professor Briony Dow, who is also director of health promotion for the National Ageing Research Institute. "You're ageing from the moment you're born really," Dow says. "Ageing healthily is not different from healthy living I guess. It's just we've looked at it from the perspective of older people." Making certain lifestyle choices can reduce your chance of needing residential care or going to hospital. It can also help you feel safe and secure and ensure you are an active participant in life, rather than an observer on the side lines. To the extent you can control your destiny, "you're wise if you do," she says. Here are Professor Dow's top tips to maximise your chances of ageing well. 1. Keep physically active This means aiming for at least a good half hour to an hour of moderate intensity physical activity every day, where you're working hard enough to get a bit puffed but you can still talk. This reduces your risk of a wide range of diseases but especially heart disease, our biggest killer. It can also help mental health problems like anxiety and depression. It doesn't have to be formal exercise: gardening, housework or walking to the shops all count. Some stretching

exercises or yoga are also important for flexibility "so you can keep doing what you want to do," Dow says. And it's good to include some strength training, such as exercising with weights to help control weight and keep your bones strong. "Physical activity is the most important thing, although it's a toss up between that and giving up smoking if you're a smoker." 2. Don't smoke "If you're a smoker, you need to stop smoking and the message is it's never too late to do it," Dow says. "If you give up smoking in middle age, you'll improve your life expectancy by 10 years. Or another way to put that is your life expectancy is reduced by 10 years if you keep smoking. But it's not just about life expectancy. Smoking is a risk factor for all the chronic diseases, including the ones that affect your brain [Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia]." 3. Be socially active "This is really important for both your physical health and mental health," says Dow. "If you're socially isolated, it's equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day." Some evidence suggests loneliness can increase your risk of premature death

by as much as 30 per cent. It may be that increased stress hormones increase the risk of heart disease, but social activity is also likely to be a form of mental stimulation that's good for ageing brains. Says Maree Farrow, a neuroscientist and research fellow with Alzheimer's Australia, being socially active means "you have to think about what you're saying and understand what [someone else] is saying. You have to understand facial expressions and body language. Lots of different parts of your brain are working." Social isolation can happen even when other people around, Dow points out. It's having a real sense of connect to others that's thought to be important. 4. Eat well and limit the booze Eating well has a significant role to play in warding off chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and even some cancers. There's no magic food that's going to keep your brain healthy, says Farrow but eating a varied and balanced diet that includes plenty of fruit and vegetables seem to be particularly important. As well, limit your alcohol intake 5. Keep your brain active

Healthy Eating: Be a Conscious Eater Do you mindlessly chomp down on food even when you’re not hungry? Do you even know what you ate at your last meal? If not you could be an unconscious eater. For many people, food has

become an emotional attachment. They eat when they are feeling depressed, lonely, scared and bored. Food somehow seems to fill in the loneliness or depression gaps, and although it may provide a quick emotional fix, overeating and eating unconsciously may be the reason that you’re finding it hard to lose those unwanted kilos. Food Log Keeping a food log will help you find out if you’re heading in the right direction

You may be an unconscious eater if you find yourself eating all the time and although you’re not in any danger right now, it's possible that this mindless eating could lead to a variety of health problems later in life including eating disorders, obesity and heart disease, to name but a few. Stop the vicious cycle and become a conscious eater today. Here are three simple steps to help get you started on the path to conscious eating: Take note Monitor yourself in the next week and see if you find yourself eating when you’re not hungry. Try to identify why you are eating and stop the vicious cycle

"We know from lots of research that people who do more stimulating activities throughout their life have better brain function and a lower chance of developing dementia," says Farrow. While there has been much emphasis on crosswords and sudoku puzzles to boost your brain, other activities you could do include taking up a second language, pursuing a course of study, reading widely or learning a musical instrument. The research suggests it's challenging the brain so it's learning something new or different is what matters most. But Dow says the publicity over the role of mental stimulation has suggested there is stronger evidence for a protective effect than there really is. "We don't have nearly as strong evidence as you would think from all that you read," she says, adding that there's more evidence exercise is important. Nonetheless, it seems to be helpful and certainly won't hurt. 6. Have an optimistic outlook Are you a glass half empty or glass half full person? The evidence the latter might help you fare better as you age comes from talking to older people who feel they're doing well and asking them what they think has helped, Dow says. As well, research has found optimists are more willing to adapt and actively participate in seeking solutions to problems and because they feel less hopelessness, they have less stress and depression. Positive people are also more likely to engage in behaviours that keep them physically healthy like eating well and exercising. While personality type and life experiences can influence your tendency to be optimistic, you can also take matters into your own hands. "I think you can control it to some extent," Dow says. "I think you can manage your life so you've always got something that is exciting for you and can keep you upbeat."

by putting an end to unconscious eating. Start a food diary Record everything from what you ate to what time you ate to how it made you feel. Keeping a record of everything that you ate could help you identify any potential problems. Sometimes, it also helps to see things in

black and white as they seem more real. Plan Plan your meals before you start your day. Every morning when you wake up write down what you plan to eat for that day and try to stick to it. Having a plan helps keep you on the right track.

5 of the best thermal waters in Europe Packed with minerals and heated naturally by the Earth’s core, thermal waters have captivated people for thousands of years. Famed for their healing powers, a visit to the spa is said to cure a range of ailments from arthritis to dull skin; today many of the most popular thermal spas in the world also double as luxury facilities where visitors can enjoy pampering treatments of all kinds. Whether you’re looking for history, architecture, natural beauty or just a great massage, here are five of the best destinations to experience the thermal waters around Europe. Budapest, Hungary

patrolling Hadrian’s Wall. The historic Roman Baths can still be visited, though not used; for that, you’ll need to head to the city’s incredible public spa instead. With beautiful indoor and outdoor pools, luxury spa treatments and famous aromatherapy rooms, you can enjoy the best of the modern facilities over the course of a few hours or a few days. Find more information at the Thermae Bath Spa website. Therme Vals, Switzerland

Hungary’s capital city is famed for its culture, architecture and location, and if you’re planning a city break there’s another good reason to visit as well; the thermal waters bubbling up throughout the city’s 118 springs and boreholes have been a popular attraction with visitors for centuries. From the sparkling Gellert Baths to the neoBaroque settings at Szechenyi Spa or the dramatic 16th-century Turkish pool at Rudas Spa, there are dozens of different options to choose from. For a more specialist experience, try the Lukacs Baths – there are indoor and outdoor pools and mud lounges to enjoy, as well as physiotherapy treatments available thanks to its connection to the neighbouring hospital. Blue Lagoon, Grindavik, Iceland

Iceland’s Blue Lagoon is arguably one of the most picturesque destinations in the world – natural wonders combine with natural beauty to offer a truly incredible setting to take in the thermal waters. Located in the middle of a lava field on the southwestern side of the island, the stunning turquoise waters of the Blue Lagoon are just a short drive from Iceland’s charming capital city and easy to access on your own or with the help of a chartered tour. The best time to visit is in winter; the landscapes are stunning, and the steam rising off the natural wells offers a beautiful contrast to the crisp winter air. If you prefer to avoid the crowds, there are plenty of other great destinations to choose from – Iceland has more hot springs than any other country in the world. Bath, England Of course, if you aren’t interested in travelling, you can enjoy some of Europe’s finest thermal waters without ever leaving England. Famed for the thermal waters that inspired the city’s name, Roman soldiers used the waters to rest and recover from

Safely away from civilisation, just to get to the village of Vals you’ll need to take a 200km train journey. The effort is worth it, though; surrounded by the famous Swiss landscapes, this quartz-encased hot spring is the destination for no-holds barred luxury. Book into the adjacent hotel and you can swim in the waters until midnight then enjoy fresh, foraged food from one of four restaurants on site. A range of incredible treatments also help make a visit memorable; from a Ayurvedic treatment to special thermal water massage, if you want to live like a celebrity in incredibly trendy surroundings, the spa complex at Vals is just the ticket. Saturnia, Italy As if Tuscany doesn’t already have enough to recommend it, it’s also an excellent destination to take a dip in the local hot springs. There are a range of resorts around the region with their own pools on site, but for a really special experience head to the Saturnia springs an hour south of Siena. The dramatic landscapes give way to the incredible waterfalls and rock pools, all turned white by the minerals in the water. A small dirt track leads from the springs to a car park and changing facility, making it easy for visitors staying nearby or trekking from further afield to stop and enjoy the healing powers of this beautiful hot spring. Nearby, the river Albegna offers a chance to cool down during the summer if it all gets a bit too hot.

A brief guide to Almería

If you want to scramble down to a cove and jump into crystal clear water the colour of sapphires, spend a night drinking mojitos in the desert, lounge on the vine-covered terrace of a cortijo, eat fish you’ve never heard of and explore the wild west, then hire a vehicle and travel 30 minutes out of the city of Almería, in Andalucía. Head west and you’ll end up hitting a vast expanse of polytunnels, but to the north there’s the 100 square miles of the Tabernas desert, the backdrop to Spaghetti Westerns, where Sergio Leone’s sets still stand. And south-east, there’s the volcanic cliffs, white cube pueblos, and coves of Cabo de Gata natural park. Although a muchloved tourist destination, the park’s towns – San José, Las Negras, Agua Amarga and Níjar – are very small, and there’s nothing much but cactus and beach in between them. All these attractions can be accessed from the ever-lively Almería city. Just remember, some of the coastal bars, restaurants and hotels close at the end of September. WHAT TO DO Hiking to coves beyond coves The easy option is to choose a town or village with a beach and enjoy the benefits of bars, restaurants, kayaks and easy parking. The more challenging and rewarding option is to hike over headlands, or down tracks signposted from the coastal roads, to the dozens of hidden coves or calas accessible only by foot or boat. For the energetic, there’s the 11km hike from Las Negras north-east to Agua Amarga, passing half a dozen gems including Cala San Pedro (with castle, and low-key community of eurohippies) 40 minutes from the start, and the dreamy Cala de Enmedio, near the end. For the less ambitious, there is the spectacular playa Los Muertos, well worth the pleasant 1km amble down a track off the Agua Amarga-Carboneras road. It’s also worth noting that if Cabo’s most famous beaches – Genoveses (a location used in Lawrence of Arabia) and Mónsul (Indiana Jones and the Lost Crusade) – are packed, a short hike from either will lead you to lonelier coves. (The 5km road from San José to Genoveses and Mónsul is closed to cars from 10am in summer, and an hourly shuttle bus service provided instead.) Fort Bravo Texas Hollywood, Tabernas This is the best preserved of three film sets built when the Tabernas desert was the epicentre of the Spaghetti Western boom. Created for Sergio Leone’s The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (1966), it’s been the backdrop for hundreds of productions since, including a 2003 Manchester United versus Real Madrid Pepsi advert featuring David Beckham and Roberto Carlos, and the 2012 Dr

Who episode A Town Called Mercy. It makes for a great, if surreal day out, what with tourists texting in the saloon and the music of Ennio Morricone drifting over the car park. Twice-daily wild west shoot-out shows are full of kid-friendly buffoonery, and a pool, restaurant and accommodation have been added with families in mind. Despite all this, there’s still something poignant about this strangely beautiful place and its macho history. Film buffs can head on to Los Albaricoques, on the other side of Nijar from Fort Bravo, a real village used as a location in many Spaghetti Westerns. • Adults €19.40, teenagers/seniors/students €15.90, children €9.90, fortbravooficial.com Rodalquilar This semi-ghost town is dominated by a gold mine, closed since the 1960s (tours available). You can also visit a ninehectare botanical garden dedicated to all things deserty, hike through the surrounding valley, swim at the familyfriendly El Playazo beach, and then hike or drive the five miles north along a bad track to the most famous of Cabo’s many abandoned places, Cortijo del Fraile, scene of the murder that inspired Lorca’s Blood Wedding and a key location in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. It’s pretty dilapidated, even for a ruin, and fenced off, but an atmospheric spot. parquenatural.com City of Almería: highs and lows The 10th-century Alcazaba is one of the most impressive citadels of the medieval Islamic al-Andalus territory and is second in size only to Granada’s Alhambra. It’s quite a hoof getting to the top of it, let alone fully exploring its many towers, rooms, squares and courtyards (this of course was the architect’s plan), but can be visited in the cool of the evening – there are guided tours at 8.30pm. Beneath the city are 4½km of tunnels, the Refugios de la Guerra Civil, which were constructed by volunteers with picks and shovels to shelter the population from bombing raids during the Spanish civil war. Guided tours only; book in advance. • Alcazabar: free admission, museosdeandalucia.es. Refugios: guided tours €3, almeriacultura.com Above and below the sea The rocky coastline is as spectacular under the clear water as over it. There are 40 designated dive sites around the Cabo de Gata Unesco marine reserve, many involving caves and tunnels, shoals of mullet and amberjack. The 50metre Tunel Naranja, Cueva del Frío, and the underwater chamber at Cerro Negro are highly recommended. Local dive companies also offer boat trips, kayak rental, and guided kayak tours into navigable caves and between the pinnacles at Arrecife de las Sirenas. Widely advertised and widely available (until the end of September), as are kayaks and pedalos for rent by the hour on the beach at seaside towns. • Dive centres include: isub, San Jose, isubsanjose.com (all year); Buceo Las Negras, buceolasnegras.com (all year); Clear Kayak, Playa San José, clearkayak.es (JulySeptember)

Titanic Discovered

SEVENTY-THREE YEARS ago, on this day, September 1st, 1985, the RMS Titanic was discovered. A joint U.S.French expedition located the wreck about 370 miles south-southeast of Newfoundland in the North Atlantic. American Robert D. Ballard headed the expedition, which used an experimental, unmanned submersible developed by the U.S. Navy to search for the ocean liner. The unmanned submarine, Argo, travelled just above the ocean floor, sending photographs up to the research vessel Knorr. In the early morning of September 1, Argo was investigating debris on the ocean floor when it suddenly passed over one of the Titanic‘s massive boilers, lying at a depth of about 12,500 feet (3,800 m). The wreck was subsequently explored by manned and unmanned submersibles, which shed new light on the details of its 1912 sinking.

Until September 1st, 1985, the location of the wreck was unknown. Numerous expeditions tried using sonar to map the sea bed in the hope of spotting the wreck, but failed due to a combination of bad weather, technological difficulties and poor search strategy. The wreck was finally located, 13.2 miles (21.2 km) from the inaccurate position transmitted by Titanic's crew while the ship was sinking, by a joint French-American expedition led by Jean-Louis Michel of IFREMER and Robert Ballard of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The key to its discovery was an innovative remotely controlled deep-sea vehicle called Argo, which could be towed above the sea bed while its cameras transmitted pictures back to a mother ship. The wreck lies in two main pieces about a third of a mile (0.6 km) apart. The bow is still largely recognizable, in spite of its deterioration and the damage it suffered hitting the sea floor, and has a great deal of preserved interiors. The stern is completely ruined due to the damage it suffered while sinking 12,000 feet (3,700 m) and hitting the ocean floor, and is now just a heap of twisted metal, which may explain why it has barely been explored during expeditions to the Titanic wreck. A substantial section of the middle of the ship broke apart and is scattered in chunks across the sea bed. A debris field covering about 5 by 3 miles (8.0 km × 4.8 km) around the wreck contains hundreds of thousands of items spilled from ship as she sank, ranging from

passengers' personal effects to machinery, furniture, utensils and coal, as well as fragments of the ship herself. The bodies of the passengers and crew once also lay in the debris field, but have since been entirely consumed by sea creatures, leaving only their shoes lying together in the mud. Titanic's wreck has been the focus of intense interest since its discovery and has been visited by numerous expeditions, including salvage operations which have controversially recovered thousands of items which have been conserved and put on public display. The wreckage is too fragile to be raised because its condition has deteriorated in the century it has spent on the sea bottom, and the deterioration has increased since its discovery. Many species of marine animals have made Titanic their home, such as rattail fish, spider crabs and brittle starfishes. The Titanic also plays host to great communities of metal-eating bacteria, which as they consume the ship have created rusticles covering most of the hull. The bacteria are slowly devouring Titanic and will gradually reduce her to a spot of rust on the ocean floor with only the remaining scraps of her hull intermingled with her more durable fittings, like the propellers, the Telemotor and the Capstans, which can resist attack by microbes. Robert Ballard of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution had long been interested in finding Titanic. Although early negotiations with possible backers were abandoned when it emerged that they wanted to turn the wreck into souvenir paperweights, more sympathetic backers joined Ballard to form a company named Seasonics International Ltd as a vehicle for

rediscovering and exploring Titanic. In October 1977 he made his first attempt to find the ship with the aid of the Alcoa Corporation’s deep sea salvage vessel Seaprobe. This was essentially a drillship with sonar equipment and cameras attached to the end of the drilling pipe. It could lift objects from the seabed using a remotecontrolled mechanical claw. The expedition ended in failure when the drilling pipe broke. D. Michael Harris and Jack Grimm had failed to find Titanic but their expeditions did succeed in producing fairly detailed mapping of the area in which the ship had sunk. It was clear that the position given in Titanic's distress signals was incorrect; the problem was finding the wreck, a relatively small target in a very large search area. Despite the failure of his 1977 expedition, Robert Ballard had not given up hope and devised new technologies and a new search strategy to tackle the problem. The new technology was a system called Argo / Jason. This consisted of a remotely controlled deep-sea vehicle called Argo, equipped with sonar and cameras and towed behind a ship, with a robot called Jason tethered to it that could roam the sea floor, take close-up images and gather specimens. The images from the system would be transmitted back to a control room on

the towing vessel where they could be assessed immediately. Although it was designed for scientific purposes, it also had important military applications and the United States Navy agreed to sponsor the system's development, on condition that it was to be used to carry out a number of programmes – many still classified – for the Navy. The Navy commissioned Ballard and his team to carry out a month-long expedition every year for four years, to keep Argo / Jason in good working condition. It agreed to Ballard's proposal to use some of the time to search for Titanic once the Navy's objectives had been met; the search would provide an ideal opportunity to test Argo / Jason. In 1984 the Navy sent Ballard and Argo to map the wrecks of the sunken nuclear submarines USS Thresher and USS Scorpion, lost in the North Atlantic at depths of up to 9,800 feet (3,000 m). The expedition found the submarines and made an important discovery. As Thresher and Scorpion sank, debris spilled out from them across a wide area of the seabed and was sorted by the currents, so that light debris drifted furthest away from the site of the sinking. This "debris field" was far larger than the wrecks themselves. By following the comet-like trail of debris, the main pieces of wreckage could be found. Ballard realized that looking for the wreck itself using sonar was unlikely to be successful and adopted a different tactic, drawing on the experience of the surveys of Thresher and Scorpion; he would look for the debris field instead, using Argo's cameras rather than sonar. Whereas sonar could not distinguish man-made debris on the sea bed from natural objects, cameras could. The debris field would also be a far bigger target, stretching a mile (1.6 km) or longer, whereas Titanic itself was only 90 feet (27 m) wide. The search required roundthe-clock towing of Argo back and forth above the sea bed, with shifts of watchers aboard the research vessel Knorr looking at the camera pictures for any sign of debris. After a week of fruitless searching, at 12.48 am on Sunday 1st September 1985, pieces of debris began to appear on Knorr's screens. One of them was identified as a boiler, identical to those shown in pictures from 1911.The following day, the main part of the wreck was found and Argo sent back the first pictures of Titanic since her sinking 73 years before.

After Hours at The Inn @ The Green

Whats On Costa Blanca recently caught up After Hours over a glass or two with Chris & Nicky at The Inn @ The Green, Entrenaranjos. Tell us about yourselves We both decided to move to Spain last year when Chris retired from the fire brigade after doing 30 years of service. Nicky had worked the past 12 years as a mental health worker in Bristol and previously to that in maternity in theatres and in the delivery suite. “Our children have grown up and fled the nest and we saw this as an opportunity to move to the sun.....” What made you open a bar? Even though Chris has retired and we

had decided to live in the sun neither of us are ready to give up work yet so we decided we would like to run a bar. We looked at several bars to buy and choose the Inn @ the Green because it was already a well-established business on a friendly urbanisation. What was the inspiration for the name? The Inn at the Green has been running for the past 7 years, and the name is really well known on the estate so we decided not to change the name.... This bar was the first bar to open on this urbanization and it is a well-established watering hole with locals and tourists alike – we try to have something different going on every day. Mondays, dominos, Tuesdays quiz, Wednesdays Bingo, Fun and games night on Thursdays with a variety of live entertainment over the weekends. Who does the cooking? We do it between us at the moment and try to stick to no nonsense pub grub, all the old favourites. We have a very popular pick n’ mix breakfast menu where you build your own breakfast rather than

buy a set breakfast which is available 10.30-12.30. We offer bar snacks and more traditional meals. What’s your favourite dish on the menu? Nicky’s absolute favourite is butchers ham egg and chips. What is your favourite day of the week? Our favourite day of the week has got to be on a Thursday when Stevie Spit does our quiz and games night – We have never laughed so much. We also enjoy the weekends with some fantastic artists

working for us and entertaining our customers. Any interesting tales? We have so many funny and interesting moments but one particular one that tickled us both is when one night, a long line of people were queuing for a photo after the Stevie Spit show, and one particular chap, being a bit tipsy, stepped up demanding to know if Stevie was really a woman or a man and then grabbing his fake boobs only to be very disappointed lol. The whole place erupted with laughter.

Spaniards create blue wine to 'shake things up a bit' A group of young, 20something Spaniards have created blue wine. Just because they can. The producers of Gik openly admit they have no background in wine. They don’t grandstand about their centuries-old family history of winemaking on their website in soaring prose. No, these guys are just a bunch of dudes (and one ‘dudine’) who created blue wine “for fun.” “To shake things up a bit and see what happens.” And when you ask them, “Why blue wine?” They’ll come right back at ‘cha saying, “Why not?” Meet Gik, an absurdly, cobalt-blue wine made from a blend of red and white grapes, then dyed blue with the addition of anthocyanin -- a natural compound found in the skin of grapes -- and indigo pigments. And while they suggest that they chose the colour blue purely for shock value, the young entrepreneurs also put some thought into the strategy, pointing out that in psychology, the colour blue represents innovation, movement,

fluidity and change. Clearly, the wine is targeted towards younger, adventurous Millennial drinkers who are more open to embracing new ideas; drinkers who carry no wine baggage and preconceptions. For example, in their tasting notes -- which take consumers through the various phases of the drinking experience, starting with colour -- the first phase is noted simply as “Indigo blue. WTF.” Other terms and adjectives used to describe the wine include ripe fruit, sweet attack, marked and soft acidity. Likewise, the producers have created playlists on SoundCloud which they say pair well with a night of sipping blue wine. For avid oenophiles, the creators challenge drinkers “to forget everything you know about wine" and unlearn years of wine training. The wine contains 11.5 percent alcohol and is meant to be served chilled. Food pairing suggestions include sushi, nachos with guacamole, Tzatziki sauce, pasta carbonara and smoked salmon. Bottles retail for €10

Time to give the motor insurance sector a JOLT A revolutionary new platform means honest drivers will finally be able to benefit from lower insurance costs, whilst allowing insurers to target fraudulent claims. The new platform created by technology experts Imperious Technologies is set to revolutionise the motor industry. It represents an earnest attempt address the insurance fraud epidemic putting insurance companies back into the driver’s seat. The Jolt proposition is a universal platform, available to all insurers and vehicle manufacturers. It uses cuttingedge mobile technology to capture all the necessary data at the time of a car collision to help speed up the insurance claims process and ultimately lower insurance premiums for drivers and admin costs for the industry. The driver element is free and has been designed to be extremely user-friendly, can be installed on any smartphone and does not require additional storage space. The driver simply downloads JOLT, then inputs their unique insurance policy number, presses activate and places the smartphone into the windscreen mount. When the driver is involved in an accident, the software records a video of the incident as well as supporting data such as collision impact speed, the trajectory and movement of a vehicle post impact, plus a suite of other data including third party details such as witness statements. This data is then collected by a team at Jolt HQ and compiled into a package of information that

allows insurance partners to see who is at fault. Algorithms and bespoke software turn the data into a format that auto-populates the insurance claim form. The claim is with the insurance company within minutes of the collision. Jolt aims to resolve disputes over claims with actual real-time data. With Jolt, drivers are able to offer your insurance company all information necessary to support your claim; saving everyone time and money. This ultimately means that honest drivers will finally be able to benefit from lower insurance costs. “The original concept of Jolt came to me following a minor road traffic accident. The incident should have been relatively simple to deal with but the other driver decided to claim it wasn't his responsibility despite us both knowing that wasn't true. The claims process proved to be incredibly frustrating. It took far too long and the system they were

using seemed far too archaic,” said Mark Robinson, the mastermind behind the Jolt technology. “We started to think about ways in which the process could be improved. What we've developed is a platform that harnesses the power of an individual Smartphone. I believe what we've created is a proposition that will reduce insurance fraud by an order of magnitude whilst speeding up claims and reduce driver frustration.” JOLT was tested in collaboration with the Collision Investigation Unit (CIU) of Cumbria Constabulary. A number of slow- and high-speed impacts from various angles were tested, the police unit fitted data loggers and in car observation cameras to each of the vehicles. Following each accident the police team conducted a forensic examination of the incident to ensure data comparisons between the various technologies could be undertaken, thus providing confidence in all outputs. JOLT allows drivers to manually log incidents involving third parties or dangerous driving by another motorist. The app has the additional safety feature of being able to notify emergency services of the driver's location within moments of any accident. You can also view the Jolt My Car video https://vimeo.com/136081839 Password: JOLT2015. All-new Jaguar XF The all-new Jaguar XF will offer better residual values and a lower insurance group rating than any other comparable premium executive saloon when it arrives in UK retailers in August. A range of competitive service plans will also be available to keep customers’ costs under control. Industry valuation company CAP predict the allnew XF will hold on to 52% per cent of its value over three years and 30,000 miles. That’s 7% up on the Mercedes EClass (45%) and Audi A4 (45%), and 8% better than the BMW 5 Series (44%). What’s more, the new XF will offer more affordable insurance than any of its rivals. Insurance ratings will start from Group 25E - that’s five groups better than the equivalent BMW 5 Series, seven better than the Audi A6 and eight better than the Mercedes E-Class. The XF’s excellent cost of ownership proposition will be further strengthened by a range of competitive service plans. Customers opting for the 2.0-

litre diesel Ingenium engine (in either 163PS or 180PS power output) will be able to choose between a Standard Mileage and High Mileage package. The Standard Mileage Plan costs £525 and covers the car for up to five years or 50,000 miles. It includes two services (following the standard two year/21,000 mile servicing intervals), one brake fluid change, and unlimited AdBlue top-ups over the lifetime of the plan. It also includes MOT Protect – an MOT Test warranty

that covers your vehicle for up to £750 (inc VAT) for repairs. The High Mileage Plan covers customers for five years or 75,000 miles and costs £675. It includes up to three services, as well as a brake fluid change, unlimited AdBlue top-ups over the duration of the plan and MOT Protect. The all-new XF is lighter and more efficient than the model it replaces, and comes packed with technology. As well as offering unrivalled refinement, dynamics and design, it features

Jaguar’s new aluminiumintensive lightweight architecture which, along with Jaguar’s efficient new Ingenium diesel engines, helps the XF to achieve fuel economy as high as 70.6mpg and CO2 emissions as low as 104g/km. According to KWIKcarcost the XF also has the lowest total cost of ownership of any comparable premium executive saloon. Over 3 years 60,000 miles, XF’s total cost of ownership is £3,073 better than an Audi A6, £3,447 better than a BMW 5 Series and £5,118 better than a Mercedes Benz E Class. Jaguar Land Rover UK Managing Director Jeremy Hicks said: “The XF has been an enormous success for Jaguar, so replacing it was always going to be a difficult task. The challenge in creating the all-new model was to ensure that it improved on the out-going car in every way, not least in terms of cost of ownership. By ensuring that the new XF offers class-leading residual values, insurance costs, economy and emission levels, we’ve done exactly that.”

Hangover cure does not exist Whisper it quietly, but there is no cure for a hangover. Nope, not even eating a kebab or drinking a pint of water after a heavy session will NOT make you feel better. It's science, accept it That is the conclusion of scientists who conducted an in-depth study of morning-after experts - university students. They found that contrary to what many people believe, there is no escaping the consequences of drinking to excess. If boozing is your vice, you pay the price. The research showed that eating and drinking (water) made no meaningful difference to the way students felt after a night of carousing. A group of 826 Dutch students were questioned about their latest heavy drinking session and asked if they had followed it by consuming food or water. Just over half said they had eaten after drinking - but this had little impact on the severity of their hangovers. Lead scientist Dr Joris Verster, from the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, said: "Those who took food or water showed a slight statistical improvement in how they felt over those who didn't, but this didn't really translate into a meaningful difference. "From what we know from the surveys so far, the only practical way to avoid a hangover is to drink less

alcohol." In addition, the study found that so-called seasoned drinkers who boast of being immune to hangovers are deluding themselves. An estimated 25% to 30% of drinkers maintain they can down unlimited amounts of beer or wine safe in the knowledge that they will wake up refreshed and clearheaded the next day. But according to the study, they could be accused by some of being lightweights. The scientists calculated the blood alcohol levels of another group of 789 Canadian students who were

questioned about their drinking in the previous month. They found that four fifths (79%) of those who claimed not to experience hangovers had actually drunk less than they thought. Their average post-drinking blood alcohol level was less than 10%. While still around twice the safe driving limits of many European countries, it was not enough to lay them low the next day. "In general, we found a pretty straight relationship; the more you drink, the more likely you are to get a hangover," said Dr Verster. "The majority of those who in fact reported never having a hangover tended to drink less - perhaps less than they themselves thought would lead to a hangover." The results of the study were presented at the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology's annual meeting in Amsterdam. Commenting on the research, psychologist Dr Michael Bloomfield, from University College London, said: "Throughout the world the economic and social costs of alcohol abuse run into hundreds of billions of euros per year. It's therefore very important to answer simple questions like 'how do you avoid a hangover?' "Whilst further research is needed, this new research tells us that the answer is simple - 'drink less'."

Isle Of Bute Sign Typo Sees Scottish Land Mass Renamed 'Penis Island' A newly erected sign welcoming visitors to the Scottish island of Bute was victim of a rather serious typo. Argyll & Bute council seem to have missed the accent on 'Bhòid' in the Gaelic translation of the message, so instead of "Welcome to the beauty of the Isle of Bute" visitors are greeted with "Welcome to the beauty of Penis Island." "It makes us look bloody stupid," Bute councillor Len Scoullar said. "I’m not a Gaelic speaker but I would apologise to people who are Gaelic speakers and we will rectify it right away." "I’m sure it’s the big sign the council put up many, many years ago. It would probably be about nine years ago, the exact day I don’t remember. I will make enquiries as to who ordered the sign."

Here's a truly bizarre way to keep you and your dog safe on late night walks - by turning your pet into a terrifying werewolf. A Russian company has come up with a new muzzle design that transforms any pooch into a snarling beast to give would-be attackers serious second thoughts. The mask, which is made of non-toxic plastic, features a set of bloodied teeth and gums set in a fearsome expression that sends a shiver down the spine. It fits around the dog's head and is attached by two quick-release nylon straps. The design allows for the dog to slightly open its mouth so it can still pant while looking like it's about to rip somebody's head off. If you do want to look like you're walking a rabid hellhound, the muzzles cost around €27 and are available from website Zveryatam - although your Russian will have to be pretty good to understand it. The device came to global attention after pictures were posted by Reddit user Krlmhl. But one commenter raise a good point - that people will believe your dog really is an evil creature of the night and report you to the authorities. ClericalNinja wrote: "This is what I call a 'get shot by a cop' muzzle."

Native dialect campaigner Àdhamh Ó Broin said: "You know when people speak Chinese the wrong way and they end up saying ‘Your mother is a dog’ instead of ‘The rice is nice’? It’s like that."

A smashing goodnight kiss A wife smashed an alarm clock over her husband’s head after he asked for a goodnight kiss. Kathryne Borthwick, 26 – who met husband Monty, 59, online – flew into a rage after a drinking spree. A judge heard Mr Borthwick took off his shirt in the bedroom and demanded: “What about my goodnight kiss?” Prosecuting lawyer Tim Dracass said: “She picked up an alarm clock and started to hit him with it. "The clock broke. "Mrs Borthwick then grabbed her husband’s mobile and began hitting his head.”

The court heard Mr Borthwick begged “Please, please” as blood ran down his head and his furious wife swore and threw his CDs around their Portsmouth home. An ambulance was called at 9.45pm and Mr Borthwick was left with two cuts to his head after the attack on April 18.

Mrs Borthwick, who came to the UK from The Philippines last year, admitted assault with actual bodily harm and was given a 12-month community order. The court heard that Mr Borthwick did not want his wife to be charged but that it was not the first time she had behaved in this way after drinking. Portsmouth crown court heard she had quit drinking and the pair wanted to forget the “nightmare”. Judge Roger Hetherington said: “For some reason, which is something of a mystery, you flew at him in a rage hitting him with whatever came to hand.”

CD Torrevieja's lucky point THEY SAY that football is a game of two half’s. In Torrevieja's case, it was more a game of two minutes, as they came back from the brink, and in pure Manchester United Champions League style, snatched a draw from nothing, in time added on, with two goals in two minutes. On paper, on pre-season form, with home stadium advantage, this should have been a fairly easy walk in the park, or Vicente Garcia Stadium for Torrevieja. However, newly promoted Borriol had other ideas. Borriol are only competing in the Third Division this season because winners of promotion Cullera decided to continue playing in the Preferente. It was a difficult game for fans of Torrevieja to watch. It was a game dominated throughout by Borriol and Torrevieja hardly ever looked dangerous in attack, choosing to pass in tight spaces, hardly ever playing the long ball and

penetrating passes being almost nonexistent. Difficult to define the feeling of torrevejenses -the fans who stayed until the end of the party as they left the stadium. They did not know whether to rejoice or shake their heads, in view of poor play evidenced throughout the game, with the exception of showing some passion in the final five minutes. One nil down from a soft goal in the first half, things were looking up within three minutes of the second half as the Borriol keeper Vicent Quique was sent off for a foul on Juanfran when he was through on goal. But despite Borriol playing a man down for most of this period, Torrevieja, just could not create any chances. Again excessive dribbling and inaccurate passes lost possession on countless occasions. Free kicks to attack the keeper,

who was not the tallest on the pitch, just did not happen. In addition, Borriol realised that they could continue hurting Torrevieja on the counterattack and scored an excellent goal on the breakaway down the right wing with a header from Victor Pino. With five minutes of additional time to be played, the diminutive figure of Carrasco was instrumental in the decisive moments to follow. First he set up Juanfran who pulled one back when unopposed after taking the rebound from the keeper and then two minutes later Quintero shoots after the ball was cleverly left behind by Carrasco. It was a poor performance and hardly worthy of a point, but after two games, Torrevieja do have one point but don't look anything like a title contending team, at the moment, for promotion. At Half Time, Torrevieja's Councillor for Sports, Pablo Samper, pulled a name out of a trophy to find out the

winner of the 200 Club draw. The winner was Quesada Fish and Chips, who will now have their names added to the player’s shirts for the season. Mention should also be given to all the hard work of the promotions team at the club, with face painting, music and entertainment provided by TKO Radio, The Cheeky Monkey posing for photographs with just about anybody, gift packs given to all the kids, "Mia's Party Shop" of Crevillente with two bouncy castles for the children and a whole lot more, making it a real family fun day.

Football y Fútbol THE TRANSFER window closes this evening so expect a few more frantic hours of deal making plus dozens of rumours as to who is going where and why. Starting us of, apparently Bayern Munich have joined Paris StGermain in trying to sign Everton defender Seamus Coleman, 26 while Manchester United are refusing to lower their £30m valuation of Real Madrid target David De Gea But Real Madrid are putting the details in place to present the 24-year-old Spain goalkeeper as a new signing on Tuesday according to Spanish sports paper AS. Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is employing a former Bayern Munich medic in an effort to get fit enough for the Premier

Bastian Schweinsteiger League. West Brom striker Saido Berahino, 22, has not given up hope of completing a move to Spurs before the transfer window shuts on Tuesday. Barcelona's Cameroon midfielder Alex Song, 27, is a target for Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, who is keen to strengthen his squad with the former Arsenal and West Ham player while Arsenal are monitoring Leicester City's 24-year-old Algeria winger Riyad Mahrez. Meanwhile, Leicester are close to securing a deal for 31-year-old Bayern Munich and Brazil defender Dantem however, Foxes boss Claudio Ranieri has played down the possibility of signing Inter Milan's 28-year-old Japan left-back Yuto Nagatomo. West Ham are considering a move for Hull City's Croatian striker Nikica Jelavic, 30 and Inter Milan are ready to secure a £6m deal to take 24year-old striker Fabio Borini from Liverpool. And speaking of Liverpool, they have told Portugal Under-21 defender Tiago Ilori, 22, that he will not be sent out on loan for a third consecutive season. Pundit Mark Lawrenson says Liverpool need to learn to "tough it out" after their defeat by West Ham on Saturday. Edinson Cavani

Kevin de Bruyne

PSV. And this year they are determined to win their title back. Their fantastic start in the league is only the fourth time a team has started an Eredivisie season with four wins and four clean sheets. Sunday's 4-0 win over ADO Den Haag kept up their perfect start, with a record of 12 goals and none conceded. Twenty-year-old Anwar El Ghazi, who scored twice, is the first Ajax player to score six goals in the first four games since Klaas-Jan Huntelaar in 2007. PSV, four points down the table, remain unbeaten after beating Feyenoord 3-1. In fact Phillip Cocu is still unbeaten as an Eredivisie manager in 13 matches in any August. Luka Milivojevic

move to Bayern Munich. But according to the BBC Manchester City have signed Belgium midfielder Kevin de Bruyne from German side Wolfsburg for a club record £55m. The 24-year-old has agreed a six-year deal and is City's fourth high-profile summer arrival after Raheem Sterling, Fabian Delph and Nicolas Otamendi. It is the second highest fee paid by a British club after Manchester United's £59.7m signing of Angel Di Maria. Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has told 27year-old Mexico striker Javier Hernandez he can leave Old Trafford after his poor showing and penalty miss during the Champions League last week. Dynamo Kiev striker Dieumerci Mbokani, 29, is set to join Norwich City on a season-long loan and Tunisia centre-back Aymen Abdennour, 26, has signed for Valencia from Monaco, despite a late approach from Chelsea. Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren says referees might be "too busy watching Match of the Day instead of assessing their own game" after his side's 1-0 loss to Arsenal. It was a busy weekend across Europe, with Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich winning, Roma shocking Juventus and transfers galore. Club Brugge bounced back from their 7-1 Champions League aggregate defeat by Manchester United... by thrashing Standard Liege by the same score line over 90 minutes. Abdoulay Diaby had only scored once in his nine appearances, including blanks in both legs against United, following his summer move from Lille but he scored four goals against Standard, including an injurytime strike. Roberto Soldado admits he lost his confidence in England. Roberto Soldado scored seven goals in 52 Premier League appearances during a disappointing spell at Tottenham after a prolific career in La Liga, notably with Valencia. They agreed to sell him to Villarreal this summer, taking almost a £20m hit, so you can probably guess what happened next. The 30-yearold has scored in both his opening games and even assisted their other two in Friday's 3-1 win over Espanyol - the first time he has assisted two goals in a league game in his career. Ajax are averaging three goals a game in the league this season. Ajax manager Frank de Boer had won the Dutch league title in each of his four years as a manager. But last season they fell 17 points short of champions

Olympiakos are used to having it their own way in the Greek Super League - having won the last five titles. But they needed the Greek Gods to look down on them to beat Levadiakos on the second day of the season. With two minutes left and an unlikely draw on the cards, Olympiakos midfielder Luka Milivojevic blocked a clearance which ricocheted into the back of the net from 30 yards out. Aptly named considering the manner of their first goal, Kostas Fortounis added a second in injury time to make it two wins from two. Bordeaux's new stadium, imaginatively called the Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux (translation: New Bordeaux Stadium) hasn't gotten off to the best start. During Sunday's match with Nantes, five people were injured when a safety barrier gave way as fans celebrated the second goal in their 2-0 win. A similar incident occurred last May at its inaugural game. It is a Euro 2016 venue. Good week for former Manchester City forwards in Serie A, with Edin Dzeko scoring in Roma's win over Juventus and Stevan Jovetic netting twice in Inter Milan's 2-1 win over minnows Carpi. Stevan Jovetic

Frank de Boer

Arsenal will make an attempt to sign Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani, 28, from Paris St-Germain before the transfer deadline and Manchester City Captain Vincent Kompany says his club will have a "dangerous" player if they complete the signing of Belgium midfielder Kevin de Bruyne, 24, from Wolfsburg. But De Bruyne's switch to the Etihad was reportedly almost scuppered by a German car company, who wanted to see the player

Jovetic's second, a late penalty, was his third strike in two games for Roberto Mancini's Inter and denied Carpi their first ever Serie A point. Bad week for Lazio. As if Roma needed any more reason to be joyous, their local rivals have had a disastrous few days. They were beaten in the Champions League play-off by Bayer Leverkusen, resulting in reports they had pulled out of all transfer negotiations they had been in as a result of the reduced income. And on Sunday, they were thumped 4-0 by Chievo, who finished below mid-table last season.
