History in the Making THE MS AMADEA cruise ship from the German Company Phoenix Reisen arrives this afternoon in Torrevieja. This simple act of dropping anchor offshore and tendering their guests ashore to enjoy a little Torrevieja sunshine is a day that will go down in history for Torrevieja as this marks the first time in modern history that a Cruise Ship has visited the City of Salt. Even though by today's standards she's looked upon as a small, almost boutique sized ship anyone on Torrevieja's seafront should be able to see her anchored offshore. With a length of 193 metres and a maximum of 600 guests the MS Amadea fills a unique niche in the German Cruise market providing personalised service and plenty of individual space for everyone. Due to the relatively small size of the ship, her schedules are varied and often extraordinary, which lead to her visiting many interesting harbours which most other cruise-lines never visit, such as today's historic visit to Torrevieja. German is the only language officially used on this ship and therefore, unsurprisingly, when you see cruise line guests today, you may fairly safely assume that most of the guests are from the German speaking countries: Germany, Austria and Switzerland making up the typical guest list. The MS Amadea's on-board atmosphere could best be described as cultivated and calm although life on-board is apparently not too formal. The International crew is very friendly and takes good care about the guests' wellbeing. One quite unique feature of the Amadea is the fact that there are only exterior staterooms and all are relatively spacious with lots of amenities like satellite TV with DVD player, mini-bar, WC and shower or even bathtub, hairdryer and bath-robes. Several cabins feature a private balcony. MS AMADEA at a glance: she's 29,000 GRT (Gross Registered Tons); Length: 193 m, Width: 25 m, Draught: 6.50 m, Decks / floors: 8, officially launched in 1991 as the Asuka in Japan and taken over by Phoenix Reisen in 2006. Here two Mitsubishi MAN engines provide her with 11,700 hp giving the MS Amadea a Cruising speed of 15 to 18 knots. The Cruise operation is managed by VShips, Monaco and the ship fly’s the Flag of the Bahamas Crew numbers vary between 250 to 280 and are mostly European and Philippine with the officers mostly German and European. Passengers are up to a maximum of 600, mostly German guests, but the ship is very popular with Austrian, Swiss and also Japanese guests, who sail as a group, mainly due to ship's atmosphere and interesting itineraries. The ship has two Restaurants offering a total of 630 seats; plus free choice of seats and times of eating. According to the Cruise Line's website, the MS Amadea is the Phoenix's flagship being a modern firstclass cruise ship offering generous and elegant cruising

with plenty of space while on your cruise. The Phoenix flagship offers well-appointed spacious bars, salons and rooms on eight passenger decks. In two equivalent restaurants all guests eat in a single sitting. In Lido Café, you can have breakfast outside and have lunch in good weather. She has seven bars, a viewing lounge, smoking lounge, library, fireplace room and an internet cafe where they invite you to linger. The spacious lobby has a large reception, shopping arcades and various areas offering lots of variety. There is also a vantage lounge, a cinema, a hospital and German doctor plus a spacious two-story show lounge and music salon. Five lifts connect the decks together. On board there is a laundry and ironing service as well as room service for drinks, snacks and breakfast. An elegant spa with large beauty salon and panoramic windows offers: beauty salon, fitness centre, massage, sauna, steam rooms and relaxation areas. The outside decks are spacious and offer shade from the sun with deck chairs, shuffleboard, small outdoor pool with Jacuzzi and a wraparound promenade with jogging track. A highlight is the generous garden and golf course landscape with golf bar on the sun deck. The attentive service of a friendly team and a rich program with daytime activities and evening entertainment will make your holiday on our first-class ship unforgettable. Torrevieja urges Valencia to yield the auditorium after the closure of two theatres THE CITY of Torrevieja, ruled by the five party coalition, pentapartido council, has asked the Generalitat Valenciana to give them the rights to the International Auditorium, as the title is held by the regional administration, to allow them to relocate all cultural programming culture to the venue. Since the Pentapartido closed the city's two main performance areas, the entire former cultural program organised primarily by the former Partido Popular council is up in the air right now, since they closed the two municipal centres: the Municipal theatre and Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre, for what they called 'safety deficiencies'. The proposal was made during a conversation last weekend, and is now more urgent than ever as they try to not have to suspend some more activities that were scheduled in either of the two centres. The pentapartito already sought use of the Auditorium in August from the Generalitat through new conditions for use of the auditorium, which is the cultural centre with more audience capacity throughout Valencia. However, the pentapartido's sudden closure of the two cultural centres, without any Plan B in mind, has reactivated the request. In August, Torrevieja's Council wanted to sign a new agreement to be able to use the auditorium more often that would broaden the number of days in which the facilities are transferred to the city. Meanwhile, Councillor for Activities, Fanny Serrano met a week ago Monday with the Director General of the Agency for Safety and Emergency Response of the Generalitat, Josep Maria Angel, to address the closures they had performed to ensure the safety of people both in public and private spaces. Fanny Serrano also reported that they are finalizing the technical report on the safety of the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre, "once all the necessary measurements and checks on compliance with the emergency measures and evacuation have been made." If the report supports the

security of the centre, Serrano added: "we will proceed to authorize its use again; immediately addressing the implementation of the actions required to facilitate the grant of the compulsory license to open and its urgent proceedings before the Department of President of the Generalitat,” said the socialist councillor. However, Torrevieja's Mayor Jose Manuel Dolon may throw a spanner in the works. Thus, while Councillor and Mayor in waiting Fanny Serrano is trying to find a solution, the Mayor is complaining of the facts that the International Auditorium cost 43 million euros and according to him, requires more work. Jose Manuel Dolon, anticipated holding a meeting with the director of the Thematic Projects Company to request the transfer of rights for the Auditorium for the remaining four years of their contract. But first, the Mayor said, “the Government, which owns the buildings erected over one hundred thousand square meters donated by the city at the time, must conduct an analysis of the deficiencies in the construction.” Mayor Dolon said the City Council will request a transfer for four years the contract and

complained that the margin of the economic cost that this may have for the council is very bad. In fact, he would not venture how much maintenance on the building was. What he did say is that seeking the transfer of the facility each time the City Council wants to make a cultural activity is not a quick process. In reference to the unopened Conservatory, unworn, the mayor thinks that it will be difficult for the Government to open this as originally interned as an international music conservatory for which it was conceived. He believes the project could host a business park linked to new technologies. In any case, its operation will not be awarded. "We cannot let others bear or speculate on why it has cost so much public money." It should also be noted that had the Partido Popular been voted back into power in May, that they were already in advanced talks to buy out the contract and take over early control of the International Auditorium, so what the Pentapartido are proposing is nothing new. The PP were also in negotiations to use the International Conservatory as a possible University Campus as the first stage of Torrevieja having its own University, specialising in the creative arts. Inspired by the Berlin Philharmonic, this Auditorium/Conservatory has become the town’s most important cultural infrastructure, a true Conference Centre. This Auditorium-conservatory is situated in a truly beautiful setting: The Alto de San Jaime, a hilltop with spectacular views to the east and west of the La Mata y Torrevieja Lagoons, essential features of the Natural Park of the same name. It has a garden area covering 95,665 square metres and is basically split into two areas: The Auditorium, with a symphonic hall for an audience of 1,450, a chamber hall with capacity for 385 people and a perimeter hall that joins both halls and also the Conservatory and buildings attached to the Auditorium to be used for higher education.

Bracelet for health - indentification MASBA Císcar puts Eduardo Dolon in

ON FRIDAY morning September 18th at the Palace of Music, the Masba foundation presented their new healthwristband. The event was attended by many members of the current government, headed by Torrevieja's Mayor José Manuel Dolon and other members of the corporation and Mr. Hipólito Caro, director of the Department of Health No. 22. Possibly due to poor advertising and publicity from the Local Government, only around 30 members of the general public attended the informative event with some of those being specificity invited to attend. The foundation thanked the presence of all attendees, especially members of the government team, recognizing the work they have done since its recent takeover and thanking them for their involvement and closeness with the social fabric, particularly related to the elderly. In this sense MASBA President Jose Santiago Sempere noted that "Actions speak louder than words" in clear reference to a before and an after situation in tackling the tasks of local government. The presentation ceremony showed off the work of the creators Oscar and Ruben, two young entrepreneurs who recently came up with the bracelet concept. The idea is not a new one, since Medical ID bracelets with allergies and illnesses have been around for decades but this new bracelet takes the concert in to the present century. This new idea offers passive safety as the unit offers vital

data about the person should a medical team require information, such as in an emergency and it's available anywhere, in an easy, fast, safe and accurate fashion. This new idea, incorporates the latest technology that's designed for emergency situations and goes beyond proving just useful data as they contain all user information, contact persons, location via GPS or triangulation, etc., always passively, allowing the user to wear and forget without having to do anything, meanwhile when moving outside their residence, they are carrying this information with them at all times. It has also been very useful in its use by people suffering from diseases like Parkinson's, Alzheimer's or senile dementia. It requires no maintenance, is waterproof and anti-allergic, and initially only requires the entering of the user's personal data and for this to be updated each time their personal situation changes. All this is done in a simple and intuitive way, but to facilitate further, the foundation has offered to carry out this work to users who request it. This new generation device that has a retail price of 39€, but will be offered free to new affiliates of the foundation and at a remarkably affordable price for the rest of seniors who request it through the foundation. charge of PP campaign

IT'S EXPECTED that Spain's next General Election will be held on December 20th, 2015. Although nobody is officially on the campaign trail as such, last Monday Eduardo Dolon, was given charge of the Partido Popular campaign for the Province of Alicante. The PP of Alicante will contest the election with Cesar Sanchez as president of the council and Eduardo Dolon as number two in the party institution. The new president of CPAP, Isabel Bonig, has also entrusted the direction of the general campaign to their general coordinator, oriolana Eva Ortiz. José Ciscar did the same in the province of Alicante naming his newly appointed number two, the provincial secretary general Eduardo Dolon, as campaign manager for his constituency. But unlike Madrid, Císcar is counting on people who have already had important responsibilities to work on the campaign and become part of his team even before becoming provincial party president. In fact, Eduardo Dolon was put forward as a possible president of the Delegation of Alicante however the Citizens (C's) vetoed Císcar. This came about because of the discrepancies with C's in Torrevieja, and they could not reach an

agreement with the Cs President, Albert Rivera. Eduardo Dolon is in charge of organising the provincial party convention together with fellow new provincial secretary of the PP, Rafael Candela. This new PP offers a much younger and renewed image. Císcar said that "the PP of Alicante is always committed to the renewal of its ideas and to provide opportunities for new people to take over tasks and responsibilities in the party" and that "the person who we have chosen to lead the Provincial Committee of the campaign is the man who recently took on the responsibility to be secretary general; Eduardo Dolon.” Dolon thanked Císcar for his confidence in him and said that "we will be focusing on developing teamwork. It's a team that implies the spirit of the new PP, which combines experience and youth, which will coordinate with the support and collaboration of all permanently 'affiliates.

No film studies at City of Light

THE FABULOUS Ciudad de la Luz film studio complex on the outskirts of Alicante is under debate this week. Having been closed and put up for auction because of uncompetitive practices due to the studio being able to undercut other establishments because it was owned by the Valencian Community, the EU have stepped in on a number of occasions and scuppered plans to sell the studio for less than they, the EU, think it is worth. Last week, Valencia presented a proposal before the European Commission to prevent the second auction of the cinema complex Ciudad de la Luz (the first was empty). The Counsel would give Brussels a "payment in kind" control of the infrastructure, with the Alicante cinema complex assets being integrated into the Generalitat. This, said the Council, would mean that they would recover the 265 million granted by the Community that the EU has considered illegal in a decision taken in May 2012, following a complaint from other private cinema complexes of EU member countries. Thus the Generalitat would be able to recover at least 164 million that was invested in public works for the construction of movie studios and offices although now, after years of inactivity, they only have a market value of 80 to 100 million euros, as assessed in the specifications

of the auction. This amounts to a further loss of about 110 million, corresponding to the subsidies provided for film production and sponsorship. If a second auction is held, after the first being declared void, the price of the sale could drop even further, of up to 20% of the value of the complex so that the losses would be even higher. Along with this payment in kind, the condition imposed by Europe would be that any film studies would serve not to help such "commercial activities" as filmmaking, as had been planned from the beginning by creating a film industry and ancillary services around studies as an economic engine of the province. The

Free Wi Fi in Almoradi

WHEN IT comes to offering a free Wi-Fi solution to visitors and residents, Almoradi is leading the way. Their new system may be used by up to 700 people simultaneously all receiving two to three megabytes of data capacity to surf as they wish. This is a huge step above the likes of Torrevieja where their 'free' offering is limited to not only slow bandwidth and coverage but just a few websites carrying information about Torrevieja, which is very restricted. Almoradi's free Wi Fi service is available to all residents in the Plaza de la Constitución. The Mayor Jaime Perez and Councilman for New Technologies, Abelardo Muñoz (PSOE) reported that the project has been possible thanks to the TVHoradada Group, the company responsible for the implementation of the network, who have installed two routers in the square, which will supply Internet to a capacity of up to 700 people simultaneously. TVHoradada spokeswoman Ana Martin gave her assurance that each user will have 2 to 3 Mbps downstream and 500K upstream. The Mayor highlighted the rapid growth of Almoradi and the need to provide new services to citizens, starting

in the central square of the town and announced that soon this service will be extended to other places of the town, namely the Town Square and Plaza Joaquín Ballester in the hamlet of El Saladar. He said he felt very satisfied with the service, with Almoradi being one of the towns leading the way and being a pioneer in new technologies. Almoradi's Mayor Jaime Perez wants this to be "a benchmark, making it available in the industrial estate in an industrial Technology Zone, which translates into a much more attractive offering for companies with better communications and a more efficient service, raising the possibility that more companies will come to Almoradi." The mayor did not indicate the type of agreement nor the award to the company that is providing the service to the City nor if there is a cost to city coffers. The Council also reported on a matter of expanding the business environment and mentioned the official merger between TVA (television Almoradí) and TVHoradada companies, so subscribers to TVA will have better service in the future thanks to a new fibre optic service.

Counsel now proposes to use the facilities for non-commercial purposes, contrary to what was promised by the president of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig, throughout the election campaign. The document contains a legal argument that revolves around the 'payment in kind', which would mean that the Ciudad de la Luz would come under the control of the Generalitat. The next step would decide what use would be given to the buildings. In this regard, the commitment is towards a non-film or non-commercial use thus it would not be used for any commercial purpose, meaning it would be incapable of competing with any sector, so the fate of the complex would have to be one of a public service. Brussels must now decide whether or not to allow the Ciudad de la Luz to be run as a public company with 100% ownership by the Generalitat Valencian, as has been done since 2004. This was organised by the first autonomous government of Francisco Camps (PP), the filmmaker Luis Garcia Berlanga and his team built the studios through Aguamarga Producciones, in exchange for granting the initial project management contracts. Three years later, in 2007, the PP government received a complaint from two European studios through the EU authorities because "a private investor would never have risked 265 million in such a project."

A ton for Alimentos Solidarios A TON of food was presented to Torrevieja's Food Bank, Alimentos Solidarios on Wednesday, at their headquarters on the corner of Calle San Pascual and Calle Apollo. The official ceremony of the delivery of a ton of food was presented by Caja Rural through its initiative "Bike Solidarity Project" before the start of the Tour of Spain, La Vuelta, which took place on August 30th. The initiative encouraged visitors to pedal for fun getting one kilo of food for each kilometre pedalled. Thanks to this fun event, a ton of food was accomplished for families most in need in the town. The organisation will soon celebrate their centenary and presently helps out around 200 families every weekday sometimes serving upwards of 380 menus daily. During 2014 the Asociación Alimentos Solidarios, Torrevieja charity kitchen for the needy, served a total of 50,176 menus to local beneficiaries. In addition to this, throughout the year, beneficiaries who have dependent children, receive special weekend supplies of biscuit packets totalling 18,883, plus 22,854 units of juices and

pastries and Breakfasts for children numbering 22,854 units. To this number they also have a special for Christmas and Christmas Eve, when they supplied 467 goodwill packages, each containing 35 kilos of food per person, which included staples, plus pre-cooked meals typical of the season, as well as toiletries and cleaning supplies. The total weight of these packages is around 15,000 kilos, delivered to families of one to seven members, with an emphasis on those single parents without support and sometimes the homeless. Asociación Alimentos Solidarios wants to thank all those individuals, groups, clubs, schools and associations from all segments and corners of the city of Torrevieja and surrounding areas, who provide support, particularly during the holiday campaign when their facilities received more than 10,000 kilos of food of all kinds, as well as numerous financial donations together with a yearly grant from the City Council of Torrevieja, that enables the functioning of their social catering program. Alimentos Solidarios Torrevieja is currently composed of 87 volunteers who cover all the operational tasks including cooking, kitchen management, cleaning, collection and storage, office and administration, event management and logistics. The Board of Directors of the association believes that without the selfless work of all volunteers it would not be possible to provide any of the services that are so valuable for the community.

Inexperience no excuse ALTHOUGH THE Governing Pentapartido have lately been talking a good game when it comes to always following the 'letter of the law' when it comes to politics, unfortunately last week, they were caught out at least twice for not abiding to their own rules of conduct. The major mistake was made by the Councillor for Parties and Fiestas Africa Celdrán who commissioned a company in Leon to provide printing and advertising services for the May Fair, without following the correct rules and guidelines set forth by local government. Celdrán apparently skipped all the administrative procedure laid down for awarding such a service, as noted by the Partido Popular last week. Once the matter was revealed, the pentapartito, had no choice but to retreat and regroup to ensure that neither the “agreement” within the signed documents given to Editorial MIC, nor the agreement signed on August 13th to the company are valid. Celdrán says in the letter that Editorial MIC, who are based in León, was going to take care of the production and management of advertising the magazine festivities for the May Fair. Her signature is also on a "convention" of two pages along with the official municipal stamp

and municipal shield in which the conditions are included. These "covenants" include six sections in which the publisher will do the job of finding the advertisers and printing the May Fair Magazine. However, no tendering process or contract or award that endorses the actions of the company ever has taken place. The spokesman of the government team mayor Fanny Serrano wanted to excuse their fellow councillor African Celdrán by alluding to her inexperience and said she had done this in good faith when making the order, unaware that the company was going to use it to assume a contract or an award. However, nobody from the Pentapartido has explained why the councillor did not seek to formalize what had been processed before signing her name on documents that make it the town hall's responsibly. This is even more prevalent at a time when the City Hall has just left a mandate marked by public complaints and irregularities in court by regarding the management of PP in the area of procurement during the former mandate. Serrano wanted to try and 'dull' the issue by ensuring that these are not valid as a contract. She went on to say that a tender will be opened to award this service to be resolved before the holidays and said did not want to look into how this service was provided previously. The Partido Popular Party spoke last week of the Pentapartido "handpicking" their service suppliers and in this matter demanded a more detailed explanation from the Pentapartido at the next full council meeting. PP Councilwoman Carmen Gomez said that the Councillor for Fiestas did not contact the Association of Sons of the Immaculate, the main organiser of the religious acts of these fiestas, and the company that would usually do that job. Moreover the company chosen by Pentapartido councillor African Celdrán has not only presented local companies with a list

of advertising rates and editing features but also announced that they would take care of the Journal of the May Fair. The other noticeable mistake last week was in the advertising, or lack of it, for the Hippy Party. Not heard of it? No surprise there, because unless you are a regular visitor to the OCIO, this was not included in the cultural program of the Town Hall and notice was only sent to the press 36 hours before the event. No big deal, although it did look like a fun event, even if the Mayor and other councillors did not dress up and join in the fun. However, the official poster for the event sent out by the Town Hall also smacks of the department of Fiestas showing even more of their inexperience, lack of knowledge and willingness to break the law. While it's not know who designed the poorly pasted together 'Fiesta Hippy' poster, there for all to see on the main image of the Hippy Bus is the watermarked image from the professional stock image agency: 'Shutterstock'. Thus, someone has simply stolen the image from the internet and added it to their poster without paying the few euros in royalties that goes to the agency and the designer. And while the pentapartido may wish to say that they do not know who designed the poster, it was officially sent out by their Press Office, thus, one would assume it had gone through the correct channels, and that someone would have spotted that the law was being broken by using a royalty free image to promote a Town Hall event. Possibly, this was just another show of inexperience.

Spain's first Crowdfunder is a crowd pleaser OPERASIONES ESPESIALES, Spain's first Crowdfunded film took around four years to complete from inception to screening. The comedy action film will soon be on general release around Spain and Director Paco Soto said of his photo, where he is pointing to the poster on display: “This photo is dedicated to all the actors, technicians, extras, 1,128 people and 115 companies who have made it possible for 'Operasiones Espesiales' to soon arrive in local theatres. Thanks also to those who have supported us in spreading word of mouth and sharing, and of course also thanks to those who directly or indirectly said to me that this movie would never get to be released for not following the traditional model. Thanks for the encouragement. In one word; 'Thanks'.” Although the film has yet to be subtitled into English, one of their next projects, 'Operasiones espesiales', is an

action, adventure, comedy film Directed by Paco Soto and follows the adventures of two local police officers who rescue the 'Lady of Elche'. After receiving a lot of encouragement from a ‘short’ film he produced and directed, the Elche Director Paco Soto, decided the time was right to enter the world of feature film making. Paco Soto said; “We decided on a course of crowdfunding, since it was impossible to get funding for a feature film by the usual means.” He began filming in the summer, 2013 with it all being wrapped up during the summer of 2014. Filming has taken the cast and crew through towns like Elche, Alicante, Madrid, Torrevieja, Santa Pola, Benitachell, Sax, Villena and Jacarilla and has had some scenes with more than a hundred people, such as one that took place in the Congress Centre in Elche, where a packed press conference was simulated. The story follows the adventures of Pepe 'The Official', who is being retired so he starts looking to recruit a team of Special Operations Officers for a difficult mission. The couple of local police officers put together a unique group of ex-convicts and

people with unique skills and go in search of the ‘Lady of Elche’, the mythical archaeological piece that has been stolen while being moved from Madrid to Elche. The film has already had a preview in Torrevieja's Virgen del Carmen last September as a thank you to the people of the city and the backing of the previous Town Council for their support. It has also been screened at many of the top film festivals throughout Spain and overall been well received. Although it has also been released on DVD, being shown on the 'big screen' was always Soto's objective and he's delighted that Spanish audiences will now have the opportunity to see for themselves what can be done on a limited film production project, thanks to help and support of local people and business. Operasiones Espesiales, was also nominated for 14 Goyas, the Spanish equivalent of the Oscar and although it didn't win any, this was a terrific achievement. The action-comedy, features talented Spanish actors like Germán Hurtado, Enrique Villén, Carlos Santos, Cristina Alcázar, Fran Palacios, Jordi Lexi, Joan Gadea, Barragán and Francesca Vegas, the official double for Angelina Jolie. The protagonist of this story is the 'Dama de Elche', an Iberian sculpture and a special Policia Local search team who are sent out to find it after it disappears.

80% of those over 65 have Alzheimer's A NEW report states that Alzheimer's disease affects 80% of people over 65 years, although dementia seen in a small percentage. According to Dr. Mirko Alavena, Neurology specialist hospitals Quirón Murcia and Torrevieja, "treatment in the early stages of Alzheimer's helps prevent its progression, while increased life expectancy and the ageing population are boosting the number of those affected." Forgetfulness is the first sign of the disease. Unfortunately it is common that we all have lapses and slips occasionally. This creates a lot of anxiety, especially the families and friends of those affected. According to neurologist at Hospital Quirón Murcia, Teresa Frutos, "there is no evidence to make the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. The

specialists are guided by a series of questions and accompanying the patient, medical history, plus performance tests to determine whether cognitive dementia suffers and what kind." “Physical examination and some tests and brain imaging tests, such as a scanner or MRI, can detect certain alterations typical of subjects who suffer from this ailment. The data set obtained after the patient study allows diagnosis and determine the severity of the disease in each case. The person with Alzheimer's disease suffers a progressive deterioration of brain function. The memory fails to fill the gaps with fabrications or the sufferer will give detours to avoid giving answers. Another strategy is the unconscious wildcard answer. If you have many mental resources it may

take even years before those around the sufferer becomes aware of his situation. This carries the risk that the patient may take wrong decisions with their assets, are lost or even suffer accidents," explains Dr. Alavena. Another symptom is mood disorder and personality change, whether prone to depression or euphoria. Improvement in cerebral performance is very important as no pharmacological treatment currently exists nor a cure for the disease, but one can help improve the performance of parts of the brain that are not yet affected. Usually this is a progress that lasts a few months, increasing the quality of life of the affected. Mental and physical exercises do not prevent their advance, but favour the creation of routines and adaptation of the patient and the caregivers. Quirón Salud is the largest hospital group in Spain and the third in Europe. It is present in 13 regions, and has more than 6,200 beds in more than 70 centres throughout Spain, including Murcia and Torrevieja. In its efforts to provide comprehensive care and excellence in patient Quirón Salud centres have a modern

infrastructure and high-tech equipment plus a team of highly specialized professionals and international prestige. Also, its welfare service is organized into units and transversal networks to optimize the experience accumulated in the various centres. Currently, Quirón is

developing more than 1,600 research projects in Spain and many of the centres leading the work in many areas, being pioneers in different specialties such as cardiology, endocrinology, gynaecology, neurology or oncology, among others.

Moon watch ON SATURDAY night the Noche Internacional de la Observación de la Luna: the International Night of the Observation of the Moon took place. In Torrevieja dozens of observers came out to find out more about the Moon as part of a collaboration between the Mastral Project, Astroingeo Project and the CIAJ: Centre for Information and Youth. The event took place at a vantage point with telescope at the Juan Aparicio promenade. As darkness fell, from 8.30pm to close to midnight, dozens of people approaching the area to enjoy seeing the Moon through special telescopes, allowing them to enjoy an unusual view of the moon, its seas and craters. Spanish Politicians Oppose Ibiza Airport Expansion

Podemos is going after private jets on one of Spain’s most popular party islands. The anti-austerity party that controls Ibiza’s government in coalition with the Socialists is opposing the expansion of private-jet lots at the island’s airport because it is “elitist” and only benefits the mega-wealthy. Podemos argued in a statement this week that private flights fuel social injustice and damage the environment. The party wants to use the money instead to spruce up public areas instead. Ibiza has become a vacation hot spot for wealthy visitors, international DJs and celebrities from Leonardo Dicaprio to Kim Kardashian. The island of about 112,000 inhabitants welcomed a record number of visitors in August, with 1.3 million people arriving, many drawn by the combination of secluded

beaches and trendy clubs. Spain’s state-owned airport operator Aena SA wants to exploit the top end of the market by increasing the room for private planes on the island. Ibiza airport can currently accommodate 25 private jets and the planned expansion would allow it to handle as many as 12 more. At peak times, the capacity restrictions leave jets circling the airport waiting for a landing slot, according to an Aena spokeswoman. According to Podemos, the plan “aims to hijack space” for the pleasure of rich foreigners who treat Ibiza as a party ground without any consideration for the people of the island. Spain’s tourism industry is on track for a record year with the government forecasting 68 million visitors for the whole of 2015.

First commercial flight lands at Spanish ‘ghost airport’ Castellón airport, known as Spain's "ghost airport", received its first commercial passenger flight on Tuesday morning, nearly five years after it opened. A Ryanair flight from London Stansted landed minutes before its scheduled arrival time at 10.40am. The airport has become an emblem of Spain’s reckless boom-era infrastructure spending, which left the country mired in debt. Building and maintaining the facility has already cost taxpayers €170 million (£125 million). An investigation by the European Commission is underway to decide whether subsidies paid to the company SNC-Lavalin running the airport constitute illegal state aid. The fully booked flight, carrying 189 passengers, was the first of the Irish carrier's three weekly connections between the British capital and Castellón airport, close to Valencia. Ryanair, which is the only company currently operating scheduled flights to the "ghost airport", will soon add a service from Bristol. “It’s a historic day”, British passenger Raphael Dauchy said.. Mr Dauchy, a 30-year-old consultant from London who regularly visits the Mediterranean town of Peñiscola, said the opening of the airport would be a “game-changer” for the region. “It will make a difference in giving Castellón province more international exposure, which it really needs as it is quite dependant on

tourism. I thought it would never happen.” The airport was inaugurated in March 2011 by two politicians from Spain’s ruling Popular Party, whose careers have since been curtailed by corruption cases. Carlos Fabra, former Castellón provincial chief, is serving a four-year jail sentence for tax fraud, while ex-Valencia premier Francisco Camps resigned in 2011 to defend himself against accusations of accepting bribes. A controversial €300,000 (£220,000) sculpture believed to depict Mr Fabra still stands at the entrance to the airport. Aerocas, the company set up by the Valencia government to run the facility, spent €35 million (£26 million) on advertising to promote the unused building. The money was mostly spent on shirt sponsorship deals with local football clubs Villarreal and Castellón.

After years of pressure, Madrid’s King Balthazar to be played by black man For the first time ever, one of the stars of Madrid’s annual Three Kings of Orient parade will be played by a black man rather than a white man wearing makeup. Every January 5, Spanish cities hold street parades celebrating the biblical tale of the Three Wise Men who brought gold, frankincense and myrrh to the baby Jesus. That night, children go to bed hoping that the Magi will bring them their Christmas presents. One of these characters, King Balthazar, has traditionally been portrayed as dark-skinned. But despite longstanding calls for the figure to be played by a person of African descent, the request had so far fallen on deaf ears. Now, municipal sources say the New Leftist government of Manuela Carmena has accepted a petition filed by the Socialist Party. “It is an old demand by the Afro-Socialist group, and now it looks like it’s going to happen,” said a

source. Socialist councilor Mar Espinar said the decision is more symbolic than it may first appear. “It is a new step toward the normalization and integration of all peoples, races and cultures that make up the Madrid melting pot,” she said in a release. Traditionally, city councilors have played the role of the Three Kings. “Fortunately, this anachronism will be left behind by next Christmas,” said Espinar. Other Spanish municipalities have been hiring black people to play King Balthazar for some time, including the nearby town of Alcorcón.

220 people claim ownership of lost Cop car left hanging lottery ticket worth €4.7 million This is the story of someone who was lucky yet unfortunate at the same time. It is also the story of someone else who feels absolutely terrible about the prize money he is now likely to come into. And finally it is the story of 220 individuals who are hoping to become multimillionaires overnight – either because they feel they are legitimately entitled to the money, or because they feel it’s at least worth a try. In the last week of June 2012, the lucky-yetunfortunate person bought a ticket for the Primitiva lottery at an outlet inside a shopping centre in A Coruña, selecting the numbers 10, 17, 24, 37, 40 and 43. But on the day the winning numbers were announced, this person did not pay attention. And when they showed up at a different outlet to make another lottery punt, they lost the receipt for the winning ticket, which was worth €4.7 million. But the receipt did not disappear. It was found by the owner of the second lottery outlet, also located in A Coruña, on San Agustín square. This man, who stands to keep the fortune if the rightful owner is not found, feels awful about it. Manuel Reija said it never once occurred to him to keep quiet and just cash the prize. After he ran it through the machine and realized that all six numbers were correct, he rushed to inform the authorities. But 14 months have now elapsed after an announcement was published in the official provincial gazette. The message was purposely

discreet, but there was an inevitable avalanche of opportunity seekers. To date, 220 people have claimed the prize, the last 30 this week alone. September 25 is the deadline to file a claim to the money. If nobody is able to prove ownership, the State Lottery and Betting Society (SELAE) will award the €4,722,337 to the lottery dealer who found it. But Reija is so upset about not finding the true owner that he will no longer talk to the press. Politely, he says in a breaking voice over the telephone that “this is very awkward for me, the issue has completely overwhelmed me; to me, customers are the most important thing.” Meanwhile, the winning ticket sits inside a safe awaiting its new owner. Applications are being sent to A Coruña City Hall along with a description of the way the ticket presumably looked when it was lost – any scratches, pencil notes, whether it was folded or not, anything that might prove that applicants physically saw the piece of paper. Many of the claims have already been rejected, but other people still have their hopes up. After September 25, another three months will go by before A Coruña issues an administrative resolution. Even then, there are also legal suits filed by people who are quite certain they lost their ticket, and whose cases will have to conclude before any decision becomes final. These individuals are asking for more serious evidence than just a physical description of the ticket, such as a review of camera footage, fingerprint checks or even DNA testing.

Around the port in Barcelona, it’s not unusual to see National Police vehicles on patrol. But it’s not quite so normal to see one of these cars lying face first in the sea, as happened this weekend. As can be seen from the above photo, one of the police cars that are usually used for border patrols ended up face first in the water on Saturday. The two occupants of the car were carrying out routine tasks when the incident occurred. The car was a relatively new model and, unusually for Spain, had an automatic transmission, with which the officers were not familiar. When the car approached the breakwater to get a better view of the seafront, “the driver confused the brake with the gas pedal,” a police spokesperson explained, sending the car plunging over the edge. The vehicle was left half-submerged until a crane eventually managed to pull it out of the waters. The police officers were unhurt thanks to the fact that they went off the edge where the breakwater was. “In another place they could have fallen into the sea, and we’d be talking about much worse consequences,” added the same spokesperson.

Back Stage with Red Strokes

Who are you and what do you do? My Stage name is Red Strokes. I am a guitar vocalist heavily influenced by country rock music but will perform anything from Matt Monro to Deep Purple How did you start in the business? I was given my first guitar at the age of 14 and started performing at sixteen and have performed on and off since then. What would you be doing if you were not an entertainer? If I was not an entertainer I would probably be unemployed or filling shelves in a supermarket although I always fancied being a postman. As an entertainer who has been your biggest influence? My biggest influence has always been "The Eagles"

from the early Seventies right up to date. Do you ever get nervous or have you suffered stage fright? I do not get nervous, but do go very quiet and not talk to people before I go on stage. What was your best moment? My best moment was probably appearing at Brean Sands Country Music Festival. At "The Seagull” on Thursday night 800 people in the audience, then on Friday afternoon 1300 people turned up. What has been your worst moment? I cannot remember a worst moment, however I intensely dislike turning up to a gig to find the venue has closed down and I am not aware. What’s the best piece of advice you have received or would give someone starting out in the business? The best piece of advice I was given and would pass on to anyone is "Always imagine there is an international agent or promoter in the audience and raise your performance to exceed their expectations" Have you got any little anecdotes or interesting stories?

A little anecdotal story....When I was about 19, I was in a pub in Henley On Thames entertaining the locals just for fun. Just me and a guitar singing "My Sweet Lord". Unknown to me, George Harrison was sitting around the corner. He actually came over and played and sang the song properly, and bought me a beer. Ten reasons to behave like a kid again Revisiting childish activities can reap significant health benefits. It's time to release your inner six-yearold. 1. Climb a tree Or if that seems a little too ambitious, try walking across a wide beam or crawling across the floor. The reason? Childish activities such as these can boost your 'working memory' – the kind you use to remember shopping lists or phone numbers – by 50 per cent, according to a study at the University of North Florida. 'The research suggests that by doing activities that make us think, we can exercise our brains as well as our bodies,' says lead researcher Dr Ross Alloway. 'By taking a break to do activities that are unpredictable and require us to consciously adapt our movements, we can boost our working memory to perform better.' 2. Go berry-picking Blackberries are high in fibre and vitamin C, plus their antioxidant levels are among the highest of any fruit. Blueberries are also rich in antioxidants, plus they're a particularly good source of vitamin K – which prevents blood clots and encourages good bone health. One major 2012 study found that women who eat three or more portions of berries each day have a 32 per cent lower risk of heart attack. So grab an empty ice cream box and head out to the hedgerows. 3. Head to the park You don't have to play on the swings and slides – unless you particularly want to, of course – but spending just five minutes in a green space is enough to lift your mood, according to a study published in Environmental Science & Technology. But don't just sit on a bench: the trick is to keep moving. And if the park has a lake or pond, all the better: green areas with water seem to offer the most health benefits, say the researchers. 4. Fly a kite Still in the park? Excellent! Why not try a spot of kiteflying while you're there? As well as the obvious physical and mental health benefits from exercising in the open

air, you'll be giving your eyes a workout. Focusing on distant objects makes a welcome change from staring at a screen for hours on end. It lessens the strain – and helps prevent age-related myopia – by relaxing the eye muscles. All together now: 'Let's go fly a kite'... 5. Get your crayons out Colouring books for adults have been a big hit in bookshops over recent months – with publishers keen to promote their stress-busting, mindfulnessawakening benefits. No major scientific studies have yet emerged to back up these claims – but there's plenty of anecdotal evidence from cheery colourists. Need convincing? A recent study from San Francisco State University found that adults who partake in creative activities in their free time deal better with stress and perform more effectively in the workplace. 6. Fidget! Remember when you couldn't sit still as a kid? It may not have been such a bad thing. People who spend more time standing up than sitting down can significantly reduce risk of diabetes and heart disease,

according to recent research from the University of Queensland. Those who spent an extra two hours a day on their feet had increased levels of 'good' HDL cholesterol and lower amounts of 'bad' LDL cholesterol. 7. Have a sing-song! Singing with other people can boost your psychological wellbeing – even if you don't have the voice of an angel. That's according to research at Oxford Brookes University, which found that choir-members experienced greater benefits than people who'd joined a sports club. And that's not all: a previous study from the University of Gothenburg found that choral singing can help regulate your heartbeat. 8. Play video games OK, we know video games probably weren't around during your childhood. but it's never too late to start playing. Fast-paced games can increase our ability to quickly learn new motor skills, such

as typing. 9. Or play a board game Had enough of Call of Duty? Fair enough. It may be worth digging out the Monopoly instead. Keeping the brain active by playing board games can help reduce risk of dementia. 10. Have a laugh with your friends Mobile phones and social media have made it much easier to keep in touch with loved ones on a regular basis – but they're still no substitute for faceto-face contact. And sharing a giggle with your friends, just as you did when you were a child, can have huge mood-lifting, stress-busting and even memory-boosting benefits. One study at Loma Linda University in the US found that older adults who'd spent 20 minutes laughing with other people had significantly better memory recall and lower levels of stress hormones than those who'd been sitting alone. So what are you waiting for? Go and call for your friends then head to the park to fly a kite. (But make sure you're back in time for tea!)

Making the Euro volatility work for you Whilst the Spanish property market is well on its way to recovery, there are still obvious bargains to be had and the strength in the value of the Pound against the Euro is making life a little easier for those investing in the Spanish property market. Sterling had risen from the near parity with the euro back in late 2008 through to a €1.29 spike in 2012 and, whilst the Pound dipped again through to the €1.13 low in early 2013/14, we can now see prices have really risen to around €1.36. This highlights the enormous advantage to be gleaned from well-timed currency contracts and a little bit of planning. Those needing to buy Euros who timed their transactions well over the last year will have made nearly 8% gain already and that makes the investment into an already discounted Spanish property even more sweet. Sadly, some will not have been aware of the techniques available to them to capture those attractive exchange rates but all is

not lost if you are still on the lookout for that perfect investment in the sun or holiday home. With the GBP-EUR exchange rate hitting €1.36, it is possible to buy your euros on a contract based on that rate but delay settlement for up to 2 years. Imagine those who did that at €1.29 in mid-2012 and then took possession of their properties in mid-2013 when the market rate was 15 cents lower. That’s an 11.5% advantage gained through

nothing more than forward planning and taking advantage of an opportunity through the use of the right tool for the job. But forward contracts aren’t the only useful tool in this situation. If you like the current exchange rate but have some confidence that it will improve, you can wait to take advantage without leaving yourself completely exposed to a sharp drop in the rate. A Stop Loss order does exactly what is says on the tin; it protects

you against a negative exchange rate movement by acting as a safety net below the current exchange rate but the beauty of such an order is that, if the market continues to rise, your order will not be triggered and you can either buy when the level is too attractive to miss or move the Stop Loss order up behind the market to secure an ever higher guaranteed level. The key to making these sorts of plans is access to market knowledge and that is something you will definitely benefit from. Sadly the kind of technical and fundamental analysis needed to use forward contracts and automated market orders is generally not available through high street banks. It is something you can obtain from good currency specialists though. It is worth seeking out a broker to help you make the most of these substantial opportunities. It might just make the difference between a gain or loss in your overseas investment.

Beauty Tips for Luscious Lips The last step in your makeup regime is lipstick application. Some women say if they could have only one beauty item it would be lipstick. Lip colour brings the whole look together to create harmony. To keep your lips looking perfect, have lip colour with you at all times and reapply when needed. When you select a lip colour take in consideration your clothing and blush colours. The colour of your clothing and blush should complement your lipstick but doesn’t have to be

perfectly matched. However, the colours should be in the same intensity and range. Wear cool colours together and warm colours together. Pink lipsticks go with blue and pink colours and corals and russets go with clothing that falls in a yellow/orange range. Steps to apply lip colour: 1. Prepare your lips by applying foundation over them (this will extend the wear). 2. Outline and define the shape using a lip pencil that has soft, pointed top. Start at the V

in your upper lip drawing down to the corners. Then, starting at the middle of the bottom lip draw a line to the corners. To help lipstick stay on longer, use your pencil to cover the lips entirely. 3. Fill in upper lip with lipstick or you can use a lip brush. 4. Fill in the lower lip and then blot with a tissue and reapply. 5. Dab gloss in the centre of your lower lip to create a fuller more glamorous look. When defining the lips with a

lip pencil be sure the pencil and lipstick colours are very close.

Breathing Techniques for Fitness and Vitality Ensuring that you are breathing correctly during your workouts and day-to-day living has many beneficial results that you may or may not be aware of. The correct breathing technique will allow you to feel energised by unlocking your energy levels and allow you to perform more repetitions, expand your capacity and also eliminate harmful toxins from your body. Learning to breathe correctly takes some initial practice, but once you have mastered the technique, you’ll be amazed at how beneficial it in fact is. Yoga classes and Pilates classes are very focused on the breathing technique and both of these practices have placed a high emphasis on learning this technique. Breathing is an automatic human process. However, you can learn to manipulate it and control it to benefit your body. Focusing on the breath can bring about a stimulated metabolism, lowered blood pressure and better digestion, and also release any tension. Think about how many times you’ve had a bad day and just sat back and took a deep breath. Didn’t you feel so much better? Here are two basic breathing techniques that have been taken from the practice of yoga and can be beneficial to anyone: Nadi Sodhana This technique is also known as alternate nostril breathing. It works by blocking one nostril and allowing the other to inhale the air, and then blocking that nostril and releasing the air through the

opposite nostril. This form of breathing is believed (by Yogis) to restore brain functioning and balance in the body and mind. To perform this technique, you should be seated in a comfortable, upright position, preferably with your knees crossed. Take your right hand and use your thumb to push against the right nostril, closing it. Take a deep inhalation through your left nostril and, using your right pinky finger, close the left nostril, holding the breath. Release the thumb from your right nostril and exhale. With your right nostril now open, take a deep breath and repeat the process until you feel energised and rejuvenated. Savasana Lie flat on your back, palms at your sides and facing upwards. Take deep, deliberate breaths by inhaling and exhaling in a slow and controlled motion. In this breathing technique you should focus on filling the lungs with air as you breathe and expand the abdomen. On your exhalation, slowly release all the negative energy while your abdomen flattens out.

No matter which eating plan you follow, or which hot new diet celebs are raving about, one ingredient remains consistent and that is to consume loads and loads of water. Water has been dubbed as nature’s own fat burner and drinking enough water on a daily basis will help you not only shed those kilos, but think better, perform better and also improve your skin condition and general health. Drinking water helps to flush

eating plan will result in poor hydration and slow down your metabolism. So basically, at the end of the day you are more susceptible to gaining extra weight because of your slow metabolism. Then there are other factors to consider about drinking water to reach your weight loss goals. First of all, when your body is deprived of water it often sends signals to your brain, telling it to eat. That’s right — thirst is very often misunderstood by the brain as hunger. So the next time you’re feeling overly peckish, try gulping down a few sips of water and see how you feel. Secondly, water helps to fill you up. Having a glass of plain water to accompany your meal, instead of that fizzy diet drink will allow you to eat less and still feel fuller. There are formulas available to help you determine exactly,

Because drinking water has a positive impact on your metabolism and promotes the burning of energy or heat — known as thermogenesis. When your metabolism is in check, your healthy eating is given a faster boost, which means your weight loss results will come quicker to you. Failing drink adequate amounts of water, irrespective of your

to the tee, how much water your body requires for your specific weight and level of exercise intensity. But, ideally you should aim at drinking six to eight glasses of water a day. The best way to do this is to drink a glass or two with every meal. Once you get the hang of it, you will realize that you just can’t live without it — not just for weight loss reasons, but for the hundred other beneficial effects water has on your body and health.

The lip liner should not be noticeable. Lip liners are meant to keep your lipstick in place, keep lipstick from bleeding, define the shape and help them look more natural. Do not try to change the shape of your lips by going outside the natural line. * Dark lipsticks will make small lips appear smaller.

Housing Registers Price Why are Spanish house prices rising? Rise of 1.2% in Q2

According to the latest statistics released by the Ministry of Public Works on housing values, the average price of housing in Spain rose by 1.2% in the second quarter of this year, compared to the same period of 2014, to stand at 1,476.8 euros per square metre. This is the first year-on-year increase registered in housing prices since the third quarter of 2008, at the beginning of the crisis, and follows 26 consecutive quarters of declines, during which time prices have accumulated a reduction of 29.7%. In real terms, discounting inflation, house prices rose by 1.5%, their third consecutive quarterly increase. In the second quarter, prices increased for both new and second hand homes (those over five years old). The value of new homes rose by 1% (to 1,732.9 euros/m2) while second hand housing prices increased by 1.3% (to 1,467.5 euros/m2). According to the Ministry’s data, a total of 11 regions recorded year-on-year increases in housing values, the greatest being those registered in the Canary Islands (+4.1%), followed by Madrid and Aragón (both +3.5%), while the regions which registered the greatest declines in the second quarter were Asturias (-2.7%), Castilla-La Mancha (-1.5%), Murcia (-1.3%) and La Rioja (-1.3%). El Mundo reported that San Sebastian remains the most expensive city for housing, with an average price per square metre of 3,059.1 euros, while the most economical of the towns with over 25,000 of a population is Elda in Alicante, where the average price per square metre stands at 540.5 euros. The Ministry also highlighted that the price of social housing registered a slight year-on-year decrease in the second quarter, of 0.4%, and stood at 1,094.6 euros/m2.

In an article for the Spanish daily El Mundo, university professor and real estate expert Gonzalo Bernardos explains why Spanish house prices appear to be rising. Pointing out that the Spanish housing market is growing again after years of declines, with prices up 4% and sales up 14% over 12 months to the end of the second quarter, Bernardos explains the factors pushing up house prices, whilst assuring us that we are nowhere near another housing bubble, as all the key market variables like sales, prices, housing starts, and housing affordability are still a long way from the levels reached in 2006 and 2007. 1) Homes are relatively cheap. In real terms (after inflation) the majority of Spanish homes now cost half what they did in 2007, and are roughly back to what they were worth in 2002, before the boom got going. Bernardos says Spanish property is now a “magnificent opportunity”, which will probably appreciate in price. He forecasts that Spanish house prices will rise by 12% in 2016. 2) The willingness of banks to lend more mortgages. Banks today are awash with liquidity and struggling to earn good margins on lending. They have to make up for thin margins with higher lending volumes. Mortgages loans are less risky than other types of credit, and help lock in clients to cross sell other financial products. That explains why new mortgage lending rose 28.5% in July. 3) Housing is the best investment. That’s what

many risk-averse investors now think, looking at the miserly returns on deposits, losses on fixedincome funds, and volatile equity markets. In middle and up market city districts, says Bernardos, housing offers a mix of high expected capital gains (up to 50% in what remains of this decade), and rental yields of around 3.5% today, better than savings accounts. 4) Switching from renting to buying. Many households sat out the crisis in rented accommodation, waiting for house prices to bottom out, mortgages to get cheaper, and the economy to pick up, argues Bernardos. Now that those conditions are all coming true, Spanish families are jumping back into the market, unleashing pent up demand. “A new stage of the housing market has definitely begun,” concludes Bernardos. “In this stage very cheap homes (in municipalities in the middle of nowhere) will continue to exist, whilst others will become very expensive (in the best areas of the big cities). However, nothing will be the same as the boom and bust of recent years.”

After Hours at Monos

Tell us about yourselves I am Chris (the owner) and, greatly helped by my partner Caren and staff John, Sharon and Lavinia , I run Monos Bar. We are a great team and we all pull together What made you open a bar? Seemed like a good idea at the time I suppose. I wasn’t too sure how I would fare but, 12 years down the line, I think I am getting the hang of it. What was the inspiration for the name? Well my middle name is King....and, over the years, my friends morphed it into “King Con”... then into” Monkey”.... my partner Caren looked up the Spanish word for monkey and we found it was “mono”.... we loved the name, and so it became us.... Monos Bar. Who does the cooking? We have two chefs Sam and Ella (otherwise known as Sharon). Her specialty is soup- in- the- basket ... ha ha haaaa ....... but all joking apart she is a great chef and is constantly coming up with new ideas for our specialty menu, along with lovingly preparing lots of old favourites…. good hearty traditional food. What is your favourite dish on the menu? Pretty much all of them… as you can tell by my expanding stomach ....but if I had to

choose my ultimate choice would be our chef’s combo..... scampi, garlic mushrooms, chicken bites or wings, steak, ribs , garlic chips, corn- on- the- cob.... with dips ..... yummy! Also I must not forget to mention that her homemade pies, chilli’s and lasagnes’ go down a treat. What is your favourite day of the week? We love our Mondays....its family fun quiz day attended by all our regulars ... great fun... followed by ’Play your Cards Right.’ Then there are Tuesdays....the chance to dance to our Motown and Soul early evenings ….with ‘Play Your Cards Right’ to follow. Oh and then Wednesdays.....fun quiz and bingo afternoons. Also mustn’t forget Fridays and Saturdays when there is live evening entertainment with Saturdays also being our weekly steak night too, and finally, last but certainly not least, Sunday ..... It is Sunday Roast cooked by me, Chris. Roasties .... and secret recipe homemade gravy.... you can’t beat it .... and you can stay and have a sing- along on our karaoke night (there’s also ‘Play your Cards Right’ again). It makes for a great evening..... even I get up and sing! So, favourite day? I love them all!!!

Do you have any interesting tales that you can share? The thing that made me laugh the most happened a while ago but still to this day makes me smile. A couple came into the bar and asked to eat in the restaurant. John (my barman) replied ‘yes of course’ and they could take any table except for the table of six. The couple then asked which the table was for six. John replied that…er… that would be the table with the six chairs round it.... well I rolled up and still to this day it makes me chuckle.... sooooo funny.

Glorious food of Valencia Like every region of Spain, Valencia is very proud of its gastronomy- and with a claim to fame as the city of paella, Valencia has every right to brag! Valencian cuisine is known for the unrivalled freshness of the products that go into its simple, scrumptious and- for you nutrition fiends out there- predominantly healthy dishes. Restaurants in Valencia tend to be relatively inexpensive and creative with their dishes- the perfect combination for a Valencian dining experience- so be sure to try as many Valencia food dishes, drinks and tapas as possible! Surrounding Valencia is a wide, green belt of the most fertile land in Spain, known as "La Huerta." This prime farming zone came to be what it is today during Valencia's epoch under Islamic rule; the Moors are credited with the irrigation system of dams and water ways that brought the water from the Turia River to La Huerta. Cultivating rice, vegetables, citrus fruits, grapes, olives and a wide range of other products, "La Huerta" continues to provide the city of Valencia with all the fresh agricultural products it could possibly ask for. Plus,

with up to four major harvests each year, the supply never runs out! Valencia's second major source of fresh products is the great expanse of the Mediterranean Sea, whose waters lap gently along the edge of the city. Valencia's economy has always relied heavily upon its seaside location, whether through commerce and trade overseas as a major Mediterranean port or through the daily catches of fish and shellfish. Some of the most common seafood that you're likely to come across on any restaurant's menu are sardines, hake, red mullet, anglerfish, octopus, mackerel, cuttlefish, mussels, shrimp and prawns- but trust us, that's an abbreviated list! Valencia is known for its dishes featuring rice, a product that plays a pretty crucial role upon the stage of Valencian gastronomy. Naturally, the reigning king of rice dishes is the internationally famous paella. A genuine paella is cooked in a large pan, called a paellera, over a wood fire and is a social dish- meaning it's meant to be shared amongst at least two people. There are two so-called "purist" paella dishes: paella valenciana (Valencian paella) and paella marinera (Sailor's paella). • Paella valenciana Spanish rice cooked with chicken (and / or rabbit), sweet pepper, tomatoes, green beans, olive oil, saffron, and

sometimes artichokes and peas. • Paella marinera Spanish rice cooked with mussels, calamares, shrimp, lobster, clams, garlic, olive oil, tomatoes, saffron- plus any other shellfish that the cook feels like throwing in. Naturally the Valencian specialty extends much further than two paella dishes. Here are a few more popular rice dishes- be sure to try them! Arroz a banda Rice dish stewed in fish stock, then served separately from the seafood used to give it its distinctive taste. Arroz negra Rice dish featuring seasoned squid cooked in its own ink. Arroz al horno Baked rice dish with beans, sausage, vegetables and potatoes. Arroz con costra Rice dish covered with a baked egg crust

Handsome MG6 hatch offers more for less MG’s products have had to tough it out in the market, with longer established and more polished rival choices, despite the fanfare surrounding the company’s resurrection. The mid-size MG6 delivered a surprisingly convincing package of performance, space and style, especially if you were one of MG’s many cynics. Even so, the MG6 wasn’t perfect but MG has listened to feedback from buyers and the media, resulting in this thoroughly refreshed second-generation car. Subtle exterior tweaks see a modest nose and tail update but cabin quality, driving dynamics, engine and kit levels have all been improved, along with lower prices and simplified trim levels. MG Motor MG6 Price: MG Motor MG6 TS, £16,195 (S £13,995, TL £17,995) Engine: 1.9-litre, 148bhp, four-cylinder turbo diesel Transmission: Six-speed manual driving front wheels Performance: 0-62mph 8.4 seconds; top speed 120mph (limited) MPG: 61.4 combined CO2 emissions: 119g/km

Looks and image The five-door hatchback version was always handsome beast and the modest revisions have done much to boost its kerb appeal. The cabin also boasts better quality materials and an improved infotainment system on higher trim levels. The result is a more rounded and competent package, and one that should silence the MG critics. Space and practicality The hatchback layout offers a good level of cabin space and versatility for carrying large loads. The tailgate opens nice and high, the interior boasts ample room for five and, fold the rear seats, carrying capacity increases to a useful compact estate-rivalling level. Behind the wheel There was little wrong with the original MG6 but that didn’t stop prevent a programme of improvements. It’s a one-engine range now but the 1.9-litre turbo diesel is now more responsive and economical, while the basic driving experience has benefited from a 75kg weightloss programme. The 148bhp diesel is a willing performer, while engine noise has been kept to a pleasing minimum. The MG6 was always a decent steer and this remains the case. Refinement levels in the cabin are impressive, and the driving position is comfortable with good all-round visibility. Value for money The combination of a meaningful price cut and ramping up of standard kit levels should do much to entice buyers who were less than convinced first time around. The simplified threemodel line-up offers good value, with

middle and top grades gaining plenty of kit including sat-nav, high-power headlights, DAB and Bluetooth. And running costs are likely to be modest with the diesel’s economy and modest CO2 rating. Who would buy one? Anyone seeking a mid-size car for not a lot of money should take a serious look at this revised MG6. Brand loyalists won’t need convincing but others should now see the car for what it really is – a handsome five-door hatch boasting high levels of standard kit, an engaging driving experience, ample cabin space and a decent blend of performance and economy.

Jeremy Clarkson's post Top Gear motoring show rumoured to have a cheeky name Speculation is mounting that Jeremy Clarkson's new Amazon Prime show be called Gear Knobs, after BuzzFeed discovered a trademark application for the cheeky title by Clarkson's lawyers, Olswang. The application was made a fortnight before the former Top Gear presenter announced a deal worth a reported £160m to make a new series with Amazon. It was filed through a shell company, which has also registered the title "Gear Nobs". A third title – Speedbirds – was also registered by the lawyers. The Daily Mirror wonders if this name could be new moniker for "a Stig-like character in Clarkson, Hammond and May's new show". The filings mean the titles can be used for TV shows and merchandising. The Top Gear brand was worth an estimated £150m a year in sales to the BBC through a lucrative combination of live shows, DVD sales, and all manner of branded merchandise, including Stig bubble bath and Top Gear birthday cakes. However, the risqué names may not be what Amazon has in mind. Although the applications were made in the middle of July, at the end of August the

company’s boss Roy Price said the team were still struggling to find a name for the show. When asked about the reported new title, an Amazon spokesman said: "Amazon does not comment on speculation." Earlier this week, his sidekick James May tweeted a photograph of himself with the caption "Here I am again, looking like a nob." Hammond recently told ITV’s This Morning presenters Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby: “The point is, an amazing opportunity has come along for us to evolve and reinvent what we do, and we’re all just charged. It’s kind of wonderful, at our stage in life and career, we’ve got the opportunity to do exactly that when, otherwise, let’s be honest, you might not.” Clarkson was unavailable for comment.

Jaguar XE 2.0d R-Sport: Not quite the Porsche Mission E Electric very British success story it might seem Sports Saloon Price: £34,775 Engine capacity: 2.0-litre turbo diesel Power output (BHP @ RPM): 178 @ 4,000 Top speed (MPH): 140 Fuel economy (MPG): 67.3 CO2 EMISSIONS (G/KM): 109 In many ways, the Jaguar XE is the most important British car to launch this year or perhaps in the past five years. What other new car heralded not one, but two new factories and thousands of new jobs? Automotive economics and numerous visits from George Osborne to the two new Midlands plants aside (he can't resist the photo-op, but Jaguar is actually Indian-owned these days), the new XE is up against some serious, almost exclusively German, opposition including the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class. These cars are global sales success stories, but they are rather, well, dull. Thankfully, the new XE is certainly pretty enough to compete against it dour rivals, and thanks to Jaguar's new range of Ingenium efficient engines, it's clean and economical enough to compete. But is it the full package? First, the negatives. In places, the interior switches feel a little cheap compared to rival models. Nonetheless, the cabin is hardly a bad place to spend a few hours, especially when you consider the XE's compliant ride and smooth engine. Sadly, it's not quite the same for passengers in the rear, where head and knee room are in short supply. It's not vastly smaller than the A4 or 3 Series, but it feels too tight for comfort, a feeling

not helped in the front by the cocoon-like sidepanels. A taller driver might struggle more than they'd like in a car worth £35,000. The test of the XE happily coincided with a trip to Scotland. Here, the geographically challenged cabin becomes a cockpit wrapped around you and the sensible XE becomes a pleasure to drive. There's no doubt its rivals are competent and rewarding to drive, but there's nothing like pushing a Jaguar that little bit too much on a wide A-road. The steering is responsive and delightfully weighted and there is plenty of gruff bite in the engine to zip along nicely. Jaguars have always been able to offer unhurried speed and handling, but the XE is the first big car to offer that in a smaller and (more) affordable package – the entry-level XE is £7,000 cheaper than the larger XF model. There has, it seems, never been a better time to buy British. Well Indian, but who cares about that.

Porsche has unveiled its Tesla competitor: a concept electric car that boasts 0 to 60 in 3.5 seconds, 600 horsepower and a top speed of 155 mph plus, all while charging to 80% within 15 minutes. The car’s speed is made possible by the introduction of an 800-volt charging port delivering power to two permanent magnetic synchronous motors. Porsche have developed the technology in their Le Mans winning 919 car, which uses similar motors and recovers energy used while braking. This concept is entirely electric, and makes use of new wireless charging technology kept in the floor of driveways and garages. It has a 310 mile range and space for four passengers. The interior matches the futuristic concepts in the engineering of the car. Porsche said that “Instruments are

intuitively operated by eyetracking and gesture control, some even via holograms – highly oriented toward the driver by automatically adjusting the displays to the driver’s position”. The outside design matches Porsche’s trademark styling. While adapting the design to the lack of a combustion engine, exhaust system or transmission tunnel, exterior has taken inspiration from their modern racing cars as well as the instantly recognisable form of the 911. However, Tesla won’t be easily outmatched. The Mission-E will have to compete with Elon Musk’s recently announced “Ludicrous Mode” for the Tesla Model S P85D, which beats out serious supercar competition with a 0 to 60 time of 2.8 seconds. With a claimed 762hp, and available as an upgrade on the Model S P85D it is the furthest electric vehicles have been pushed yet. The Porsche is the first high end purely electric sports car built by a traditional car manufacturer. Previously, Tesla had only to compete with compact cars like the Nissan Leaf.

Meanwhile, Newcastle and Sunderland also lost and now prop up the bottom of the table. In the gossip mill, apparently Chelsea captain John Terry could play for the "secondstring side" in the Capital One Cup tie at Walsall in midweek, days after being left out of the team for a Champions League game and derby with Arsenal so say the Mirror while the Sun leads with Anthony Martials contribution in Manchester United's 3-2 win at Southampton. Defender Tyias Browning, 21, hopes he has done enough to keep his place in the Everton side after keeping Swansea winger Jefferson Montero quiet in

Tyias Browning Saturday's 0-0 draw and new signing West Brom defender Jonny Evans, 27, said his side deserved Saturday's 1-0 victory at Villa Park. Head coach Steve McClaren says his struggling Newcastle side "do not have an identity" yet and Newcastle defender Mike Williamson, 31, has rejected the chance to join Preston North End on loan while a few mile away Sunderland midfielder Jeremain Lens, 27, says the officials are not to blame for their 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth, despite having a legitimate goal ruled out and across the pond Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire have sacked head coach and former Ipswich Town defender Frank Yallop and assistant Marc Bircham - once of QPR. Goalkeeper David De Gea was impressive in the 3-2 win at Southampton, but he will concede that Manchester United's man of the moment is teenager Anthony Martial, who scored again. He said: “These three points are due to the efforts of the whole team.

Mike Dean problem. And the Mirror wrote that a petition has been created to prevent referee Mike Dean from officiating another Arsenal game following his performance in Saturday's 2-0 defeat by Chelsea. IN Scotland, Striker Kenny Miller says his Rangers team "can hurt anyone" following the Scottish Championship side's 2-1 win at Dumbarton on Saturday - their 11th consecutive victory in all competitions. Across town, Celtic are ready to nurse defender Mikael Lustig back to fitness by only playing the Swede in the Europa League and Dumbarton boss Stevie Aitken reckons Rangers will have the Championship title wrapped up by February after they beat his team to make it 11 successive wins this season. Inverness CT skipper Richie Foran insists he is ready for a proper comeback after making a seven-minute Richie Foran

cameo at Tannadice - 18 months after his last league outing. Aberdeen captain Ryan Jack says sides will want to put the unbeaten league leaders in their place and "slap us down a bit" but former Dons hero Alex McLeish just can't see his old team sustaining a title challenge against champions Celtic. And Celtic star Kris Commons says Aberdeen's seven-wins-in-a-row start will not derail Celtic's bid for a fifth successive title while Poland's star striker Robert Lewandowski is a possible injury doubt for Scotland's crunch Euro 2016 qualifier at Hampden next month.

In Spain, the son of the Syrian refugee tripped by a Hungarian journalist accompanied Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo onto the pitch before their Spanish league game on Saturday which Real Madrid won one nil against Granada. Anthony Martial Very top Anthony Martial." Less than happy with the home defeat by United was Southampton manager Ronald Koeman while Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen was delighted to return to the first team and help them to a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace. bottom right corner of the net from the edge of the box. Elsewhere, Sevilla's poor start continued as they suffered a 2-1 home defeat by Celta Vigo. Torre's first win CD TORREVIEJA took all three points on Sunday with a two nil victory over fellow bottom of the table rivals CD Muro. With both teams sitting in the relegation zone, it was a vital three points for Torrevieja, who never looked particularly threatened by the visitors. Torrevieja went one up on eight minutes following a play inspired by Luis Carlos and Cesar down the left wing, finding an unmarked Lewis on the edge of the six yard box to put it home. A few minutes later Lewis starred again, following up on a speculative through ball when he tried to beat the keeper Samblás, the Muro man handled the ball outside the area and was shown an immediate red card. Down to ten men, Torrevieja started to enjoy the majority of the procession. Torrevieja scored their second goal through a good move that saw Carrasco score from just inside the area and then three or four chances quickly followed. After the break, Muro's constant

pulling, fouling, throwing themselves to the ground in fake agony started to spoil the flow of the game and the extra player made little difference to the game, except that Torry Keeper Oscar was hardly bothered the entire game. However, Torrevieja were not able to capitalise with having the extra man, many times making their plays unnecessarily complicated with some lack of coordination and intercepted passes that led to a brief Muro attack. The expulsion of Muro's Alex Torrella left only nine opponents on the pitch but still Torrevieja's play making was not conducive to goal scoring. Three points is three points and from second bottom CD Torrevieja are now 17th out of 20 teams with Muro now propping up the division. Next Sunday Torrevieja travel to Novelda, who are flying high in sixth place, for what promises to be a very difficult game. More information about the club at: www.clubdeportivotorrevieja.com.

CD Montesinos start with win By Andy Jeffers CD MONTESINOS began their new league campaign with a new manager, new president and several new players, and this performance gave the 40 plus travelling support much optimism of a good season ahead. The early stages were dour to say the least with both sides cancelling out each other, but Monte were playing the more accurate passing controlled football and rigid formation, not seen last season, and new boss Roberto Casas was constantly shouting instructions. Macan went close found by Orouker. On 25mins Orouker’s goal-bound shot was bravely blocked by the San Fulgencio no8. Newcomer Dario had a thunderous shot skim the post and Yonhi produced a good save from distance as Monte piled on the pressure. M&A was pulled back running through, and only a yellow was given to home defender. Monte’s dominance finally paid off, though fortunate, as a clearance ricochet fell to Macan to coolly slot past the advancing keeper on the stoke of half time, 0-1. San Fulgencio did not manage a shot on target in the half, all credit to Monte’s organisation and strict discipline. H/T 0-1 San Fulgencio started the brighter in the 2nd period but Monte stuck to their regimental formation and began stroking the ball like Dick Whittington would do to his cat. Always comfortable, the away side upped the pressure as playing a high line Monte got behind them and went close when Macan’s shot deflected just over the bar. M&A selfishly shot wide when Macan was in acres of space. With Monte totally in

control and Yonhi & Play dominant in midfield, San Fulgencio resorted to hard tactics, and several cynical fouls were rightly yellow carded. Young Paredes replaced Dario and his pace saw him have 3 different markers in 5 min’s. M&A came off for Wallace whose pace also caused problems on the right side, and his first touch produced a fine save. San Fulgencio left 3 at the back searching for an equaliser, and great work by Wallace down the right, cleverly cut inside, laid the ball to Macan to smash home on 85 min’s. 0-2. An innocent clash involving Dimitry saw him yellow carded late on and Montes manager immediately subbed him for Jose Antonio. Final score San Fulgencio 0 Cd Montesinos 2. Man of match was awarded to Yonhi on behalf of sponsors Breeze Bar, Benimar. Monte are at home next week Sunday 27th to Rayo Orihuela kick-off 5.00pm.
