Andy Ormiston presents his Solidarity Calendar 2016

DOZENS OF local charities and NGOs are going to be benefitting from the efforts of local writer and historian Andy Ormiston. On Thursday, at the superb offices of Aroca Sequier Lawyers in Rocajuna, Andy Ormiston presented his Solidarity Calendar 2016 with the overall theme of "Passion for Torrevieja". The 2016 calendar this year follows the same format as in recent years. A 16-page bound A-3 size, full coloured, with over 70 photos and the theme is “Passion for Torrevieja”. Several photographers have kindly donated their photos for this calendar enriching the whole project. This is the 10th calendar produced by Andy Ormiston, although the 11th year as one year the Calendar was available online only. This year's edition has a print run of 2,000 calendars that are distributed among several NGO’s and associations. Again it is free to solidarity organizations that then sell it for their own funds, so there’s no middlemen involved with a price of five Euros. Andy said: “Once again the printing and design has been paid for by generous local businesses - Aroca Sequier Abogados, Alamo Costa Blanca Real Estate, Brithol MAPFRE Seguros, Currency Direct, and Atlas Insurance Brokers. 2016 is a Leap Year so there are 366 days in 2016 with an early Easter at the end of March, which coincides with the changing of the spring clocks. As always there is a box of information in the area at the bottom of the page, but many main fiestas, bank holidays of Spain and in UK/Ireland or interesting dates are included in the boxes. Again some astronomy information has been included, such as full moon or meteors such as the annual “Tears of San Lorenzo” in August as they are known here, or Perseides meteors to everyone else.”

The joy of living in Spain is that, partly because of the weather, there is so much to do. The calendar in each month is dedicated to a Passion, tradition, culture or sports, or outdoor life etc. Andy continued: “One of the most popular celebrations that attract thousands of people are those of Semana Santa, or Holy Week. Thanks to Javier Torregrosa for his photos of the costumes that distinguishes each of the fourteen cofradias and each is illustrated by their names and hopefully this information will enable visitors to enjoy the processions better. The La Mata parkland is an important element of Torrevieja, La Mata, Guardamar and Rojales, so Terry Roebuck has supplied some photos of a few of the birds that inhabit this area. Some people call the Costa Blanca a concrete jungle, but that is an exaggeration, as there are many places for outdoor activities either on the land or at sea. The cover by Nicolas Garcia demonstrates this in picture as we have the Hombre del Mar on the promenade and its extension along the harbour wall, with a lovely sunset and a bit of wildlife - as you see the cat stalking the pigeon. Keith Nicol has generously supplied both the January and December photos that are related to Christmas and a New Year. Thanks to Fernando Guardiola and Objectivo Torrevieja for their photos used in the calendar, and to Carlos Garcia for all the hours spent in laying-out and designing the calendar.” Andy Ormiston is responsible for the text and is the inspiration behind the project. Distribution of the calendar is through many local NGOs whose volunteers do such wonderful work. Representatives of various groups were present at the press presentation and they underline the vast assortment of voluntary assistance in the Vega Baja that covers the poor and homeless, the sick in and out of hospital, those with deadly illnesses, the old and young, orphans, people in distress, broken families, ex-servicemen, animals and our environment; then we have our entertainers who bring a smile as their performances raise money for so many charities. Andy continued: “And once again a huge thank you to our sponsors who have supported the calendar for a long time now.” During the presentation, Andy on behalf of the monthly Internet magazine “Torrevieja Outlook”, presented an award to Ars Creatio for their work over the past year producing an immense amount of cultural

events for Torrevieja. Asociación Cultural “Ars Creatio”, President Manuel Tévar was on hand to accept the award and he in turn thanked Andy for all the hard work he has done over the years in organising many cultural events, including Burns Night, which Andy personally organised for many years. The event took place in the lovely grounds of the offices of Aroca Sequier Abogados in Rocajuna who also laid on a tapas and refreshments for all the guests after the presentation. Miguel Angel Aroca also made a presentation of a cheque to Reach Out, Torrevieja's Homeless Charity in appreciation for the work done throughout the year. The Director of Aroca Sequier Abogados presented Reach Out with a check for the amount of 4842.26€ to their representative Dolores Fernandez. This donation is the result of collaboration between the law firm and Currency Direct, comes from monetary transactions by British citizens. Commissions generated through this collaboration were accumulated during the year with a different NGO benefiting each year. Those wishing to purchase a Calendar can do so from: Reunite, AEEC, Red Cross, Ruta de Sal, Rascals, Reach Out, Coastrider, AECC Pink Ladies, Regalos de Amor, Los Costaleros, The Royal British Legion Orihuela Costa Branch, Help for Heroes, Samaratins, Kanine, Age Concern, Help, The Royal British Legion Torrevieja, AFA Torrevieja and Artists for Refugees, among others. Andy's tireless efforts in bringing together the various sponsors who have covered the costs of the printing of the Calendar, make the total possible funding that can be raised from sales of the Calendar 10,000€ from the 2,000 editions produced.

Save Our Park – update

ON FRIDAY 2,408 signatures (64 of which had no NIE number) were presented to the PROP office in Torrevieja and registered. This will be put the matter onto the Agenda for the next Council Meeting which will be held on Thursday 29th October 2015 at 5.00pm in the Town Hall. Members of the public are invited to attend what should be an interesting event and to find out for themselves just what the new Council are doing for, or not doing for, Torrevieja. The organisers wanted to send out a huge thank you to all the members of the Support Group, all the local bars and restaurants plus business centres and to those who signed the petition. They noted that as soon as they hear what the outcome is, you will be notified immediately. One of the somewhat surprising facts noted by support group members was that of the 2,408

signatures, more than 60% came from concerned Spanish residents, who did not hesitate for a moment to sign the petition, once they realised they were not being asked for money, as part of another local petition scam. The campaign started on July 31st, when more than one hundred concerned residents attended a meeting organised by the local residents association that covers, El Chaparral, La Siesta, San Luis and San Luis Lakeside. The successful meeting at Casa Ventura was to discuss the stoppage of works on the La Siesta / El Chaparral Park, and it was decided that a Petition was needed to be presented to the Town Hall. Local residents invited all residents and visitors from the entire city of Torrevieja, to visit one of the many bars, cafes, restaurants and businesses to sign the petition. The plan was to present it directly to the Mayor, however Jose Manuel Dolon, has not opened his doors to the general public as he originally said he would and thus, following protocol, the petition was filled at the local PROP office, stamped and registered. The petition asks the Mayor of Torrevieja, Jose Manuel Dolon to disclose when work will start again on the project, or if the municipal government are going to abandon the site, create a different project, or just leave it to decay. The site is showing many signs of being vandalised, weeds growing and trees dying from a lack

of water, and with most projects, it's more expensive to fix at a later date, rather than continue with work. The Committee have now officially approached the Town Hall and invited the Mayor to speak to local residents and for him to give his reasons as to why the work has stopped and what his future plans he has for the park. Lest we forget, the main reason that work on the park has been stopped is that the Partido Popular are no longer in power, with most of the blame to be placed on the shoulders of those who did not, for whatever reason, decide not to vote at the May 22nd election. If one wishes to put statistics into perspective, always remembering that numbers can be dangerous things when presented in different ways, is that the 2,408 signatures amounts to more people, relative to votes at the last election, from concerned citizens about this signal project, than have placed the Mayor into his position of power.

Action against Hunger ACTION AGAINST HUNGER is a global humanitarian organization committed to ending world hunger, works to save the lives of malnourished children while providing communities with access to safe water and sustainable solutions to hunger. Although their presence in Spain is low, especially within the International community, they were established in 1979 by a group of French doctors, scientists, and writers. Nobel Prizewinning physicist Alfred Kastler served as the organization’s first chairman. According to Wikipedia, the group initially provided assistance to Afghan refugees in Pakistan, famine-stricken Ugandan communities, and Cambodian refugees in Thailand. It expanded to address additional humanitarian concerns in Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, the Balkans and elsewhere during the 1980s and 1990s. Action Against Hunger’s Scientific Committee pioneered the therapeutic milk formula (F100), now used by all major humanitarian aid organizations to treat acute malnutrition. As a result, the global mortality rate of severely malnourished children under the age of five has been reduced from 25% to 5%. A few years later, therapeutic milk was repackaged as ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTFs), a peanut-based paste packaged like a power bar. These bars

allow for the treatment of malnutrition at home, and do not require any preparation or refrigeration. There next step was to establish Action Against Hunger in the USA. The international network currently has headquarters in five countries – France, Spain, the United States, Canada, and the UK. The group's policies include independence, impartiality, nondiscrimination, free and direct access to populations in need, professionalism, and transparency. The organization operates feeding centres, food and supply distributions, and provides water

and sanitation facilities, and food security solutions. The group also provides training in nutrition, water and sanitation, food security, and health care. The group utilizes experts and local staff when developing programs. Restaurants Against Hunger Action Against Hunger's 'Restaurants Against Hunger' Campaign partners with leaders from the food and beverage industry to bring attention to global hunger. Artists For Refugees next Monday WE HAVE not one, but two Red Days before our next edition, this Friday and next Monday, October 12th. Monday, Hispanic Day, is a Nation Holiday, and Artists for Refugees have organised a very special event in VillaMartin Plaza, Orihuela Costa. The event is to raise much needed funds, supplies and awareness of the plight faced by many migrants who try to make the dangerous crossing by sea to reach Europe. Local bar owner Steven Ahmed is the man behind the event and said that “I had to do something to and take action. We are all refugees in a sense and no one person would like to think that any of their family would be in that situation.” Along with the help of Heather who provides our Gig Guides and a huge amount of information about what is going on in the region, ARTISTS FOR REFUGEES was born, an event to raise money to go direct to those desperate people at risk of drowning in the seas. Three charities have been selected, 'Save The Children' who have teams on the ground: 'Casitas' who also have teams on the ground and 'MOAS' Migrant Offshore Aid Station, who have boats helping to rescue as many as they can from the waters. Dave Gilmour of Pink Floyd fame has also donated heavily to this cause raising more than £17,000. Dave‘s offer is that for every £5,300 (7,200euros) pounds raised, which is the cost of running the boat for a day, he will donate the same amount thereby ensuring the boat can run for another day. The event is held in Villa Martin Plaza on Monday 12th October, and starts at 2.00pm. Along with a few surprise artists, many well-known local bands are taking part such Kolted, The Streeters, Pinnacles, Los Duques, Let it Roll, Backyard Session, Steve Plant, Riverside Trails, Tim Taylor, Tommy ‘Meet Laaf’ Taylor and Red Strokes All the bars in the plaza will be donating a percentage of their proceeds

to the cause. There is a Facebook Page set up to take donations online direct to MOAS if you can’t get there on the day, Local businesses are all playing their part and getting involved, some really interesting raffle prizes being donated for instance by La Bocana Water Centre in Torrevieja, who have donated a free Waterski session and another local beauty business, Vanilla, where the staff are running a sponsored SOBER for OCTOBER campaign with all proceeds to be added to the final total. If you have something you would like to donate – please message the event organisers through the Facebook page or contact Steven Ahmed at the Hen’s Teeth in the Villa Martin Plaza. Arrangements are also being made for clothes donations to be accepted on the day as well as any canned or dried foods. Steve is setting this up with the Red Cross to have all donations shipped direct to where they are needed. Not an easy task. The Coastrider and Big FM are also sponsoring this event and will also be there on the day, with Big FM hoping to broadcast everything live. Spanish News Spain crowdfunded news site El Espanol aims for success 10

It has beaten records before even being launched, but come 7 October the eyes of the media world will be on a new Spanish news site to see if it has found the magic formula to crack what is proving a major global business challenge: making money out of quality online journalism. Pedro J Ramirez struts around the open-plan office of El Espanol, the designer furniture arranged so that the 70 journalists can work at their screens standing up or seated upon tall stools. The charismatic founding editor of Spain's El Mundo newspaper, until he was controversially sacked last year, has a glint in his eye. Pedro J, as he is known to friends and enemies alike, thinks he has reinvented the newspaper - but with no ink or paper in sight.

El Espanol in figures • Raised €3.6m (£2.6m; $4m) through equity crowdfunding • Has 5,624 small shareholders and around 10,000 subscribers • Monthly subscription €9.99 • Staff of 100, including 70 journalists "We are trying to provide an alternative to the traditional newspaper," says Mr Ramirez, who wants El Espanol to compete with the digital versions of

Spain's leading newspapers, including El Mundo". "That is probably why our project is different to all the others, not only in Spain, but in Europe. We are going to become the model. Paper is dead, with no possibility of recuperation." But why, at the age of 63, is Mr Ramirez doing this? Could it be revenge on an establishment led by conservative Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy that many observers in Spain believe brought about his ousting from El Mundo in a boardroom coup? Although conservative in its editorial line, El Mundo played a central role in revealing allegations of cash payments to top officials from Mr Rajoy's Popular Party by former party treasurer Luis Barcenas. "People say El Espanol is being launched to destroy Mr Rajoy, but Mr Rajoy is going to destroy himself very soon," Mr Ramirez says. "I have a lot of defects but I never look back in anger. It's so fun to be a journalist that I am not going to get trapped in these low feelings." Madrid bombings He believes there were dark forces behind his removal. "I think the economic crisis put a lot of papers in the red and this was the perfect alibi for the political and economic powers to interfere. I can say positively that in the Spanish press censorship and self-censorship have gained a lot of ground in recent years." Mr Ramirez also claims to

have no regrets about El Mundo's controversial reporting of the 11 March, 2004 bombings of Madrid commuter trains. His newspaper pursued the theory that Basque organisation Eta had been involved long after the police and judiciary were satisfied that Islamist extremists were responsible for the 191 deaths. El Espanol, which has been warming up for several months in a simple blog format, will consist of a general news webpage and a nightly special edition of in-house material only for subscribers displayed on a comfortable tablet and smartphone-friendly app. The main site, also incorporating a "river" of breaking news alerts, is free to use until a pay wall is hit after 25 articles per month. The faith of some Spaniards in Mr Ramirez is such that El Espanol already has around 10,000 subscribers before launch. The project also broke the crowdfunding record for a media project by raising €3.6m (£2.7m) with donations of between €100 - the value of one share - and €10,000.

Mr Ramirez says he will listen to El Espanol's 5,624 mostly small equity holders, who will have what he calls a "shareholder button" so that they can comment directly on the site's output. "We are going to show that a media outlet can be profitable through both advertising and subscriptions," says Chief Executive Eva Fernandez. Advertising will be relied upon for 80% of revenues at first, but Pedro J Ramirez wants subscriptions eventually to match that income. Mr Fernandez says El Espanol will become profitable in its third year. But Juan Varela, a Spanish journalist and media consultant based in New York, has his doubts. "It's great to have those kinds of numbers before launching but the reality for everyone is that conversion rates of readers to subscribers are very low. "Because Pedro J is the first of the great old-school editors to convert to a purely online approach, it will be very interesting to see if he can find a model that works."

Prime Minister sets December 20 as Spanish general election date Spain finally has a date for its next general election: December 20. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, of the Popular Party (PP), made the announcement on Thursday night, during a television interview on Antena 3. Many PP leaders had been expecting a December 13 date, believing December 20 to be too close to Christmas and likely to find many Spaniards away on vacation. Rajoy justified his choice on the basis of the congressional agenda. “If it were held on the 13th, we would have to constitute parliament practically in the middle of Christmas,” he said. “This way, there’s a little more leeway, we have until January 14. We can pass the budget, hold the elections and constitute parliament after the holidays.” The Spanish leader had been a long time coming with a definitive date for an election that could mark the end of the two-party system in place since Spain returned to democracy in the 1970s. Two newcomers, Podemos and

Ciudadanos, will be competing with the traditional PP and Socialist Party (PSOE) for a share of power on the strength of their anti-corruption message. The PP, in power since November 2011, stands to lose significant ground if May’s municipal and regional elections are any indication. After sustaining deep losses across the country, the conservatives performed dismally again in the Catalan regional election held last Sunday. Regardless of the poor forecast, Rajoy on Thursday expressed confidence in his chances for re-election thanks to the economic recovery and incipient job creation. The prime minister is promising to create up to two million jobs over the next four years.

The great Spanish omelette fiasco They knew it was impossible but they put on a show regardless. This is the hypothesis favoured by city officials in Vitoria, run by the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) since the May municipal elections, about their predecessors’ attempts to set a Guinness world record for the biggest Spanish omelette ever made. Now it looks like the new administration will have to pay out the full €50,000 cost of the botched record attempt, which formed part of the events to mark Vitoria’s status as last year’s Spanish Gastronomy Capital. The city, which serves as the de facto capital of the Basque Country, was until recently the only major Basque municipality under Popular Party (PP) rule. An email sent to City Hall by the head of the Spanish Gastronomy Capital Association in July 2014, prior to the much-publicized cooking attempt on August 2, clearly states that the world record was held by Japan, where a Spanish omelette was once prepared with a weight of 11,036 kilograms. However, the aim in Vitoria’s Plaza de la Virgen Blanca square was to cook an omelette of just 4,000 kilograms. What's more, it would not be prepared as a single omelette, but rather assembled like a puzzle using smaller pieces. In a statement following the attempt, Guinness said that “in addition to the Spanish Capital of Gastronomy Association omelette not weighing more than the current record, it did not prepare the omelette correctly and in accordance with our guidelines.”

Then-mayor Javier Maroto and his team argued that the Japanese version had used milk rather than olive oil, which, along with eggs and potatoes, is the traditional ingredient in a Spanish omelette. Maroto decided he would not pay out the €50,000 cost of the event to the Spanish Capital of Gastronomy Association following the fiasco. In turn, the group threatened legal action to get its money. In a press conference this week, the current deputy mayor Borja Belandia said the government has a report making it “crystal clear” that Maroto’s team knew ahead of time and “with absolute certainty” that the record could not be broken. The new government of Vitoria is also accusing its predecessors of leaving debts totalling over €60 million in the city. The bid to cook the world’s largest Spanish omelette received ample media coverage and was documented in Juanma Bajo Ulloa’s movie El Rey gitano. PP sources said on Tuesday that “the mere fact of having tried for the record was very positive for the city.”

Court hands down first prison terms for Spanish jihadist recruiters Spain’s High Court has sentenced 11 people from the Spanish exclave of Ceuta to prison terms ranging between 10 and 12 years for recruiting terrorists to fight for the Islamic State (ISIS). It is the first time a Spanish court has handed down prison sentences against jihadist recruiters operating in Spain. The convicted terrorists were all members of the Al Nusra Front, a branch of Al Qaeda, as well as ISIS. They were arrested by police in Ceuta in 2013. In its 470-page ruling, the High Court concluded that the volunteers that were sent to Syria to fight against President Bashar al-Assad’s forces were not combatants, but instead “terrorists.” The first group of young people who were sent to Syria by the recruiters died in the fighting. They included Rachid Whabi, a 33-year-old taxi driver from Ceuta; Mustafa Mohamed Layachi, known as “Piti,” 30; and Mustafa Mohamed, “Tafo,” 24. They all left behind families, friends, homes and jobs, and ended up dying. The recruiters looked for volunteers among the

residents of Ceuta’s most rundown neighborhoods of El Principe and El Sardinero. According to sources familiar with the case, the court handed down 12-year sentences to Karim Abdelsalam Mohamed, known as “Marquitos,” and Ismail Abdelaftif, who were the leaders of the organization that recruited people for suicide missions. Prison terms of 10 years were given to the other codefendants for belonging to the group. The decision by High Court Judge Concepción Espejel paves the way for future trials against other jihadist cells operating in Spain and dedicated to capturing and recruiting young people for battle in Syria and Iraq. Of the 14 youths the convicted terrorists sent to Syria – the majority of them from Ceuta, a Spanish exclave in northern Africa – eight died in the fighting, mostly in suicide missions that claimed many victims. Over the past few years, Spanish police have broken up other Islamist cells in Catalonia, Melilla and Ceuta.

Torrevieja's Youth Symphony Orchestra triumphs again SUNDAY'S NOON concert by JOST went to prove that the future of the music in Torrevieja is guaranteed. At noon, a wonderful, free concert was given by Torrevieja's Youth Symphony Orchestra: Jóven Orquesta Sinfónica de Torrevieja or JOST, in the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre. The Concerto featured many well-known pieces such as the Vaughan Williams Fantasia Greensleeves, and even local content such as la Suite Simple with the composer coming from one of our neighbours from Albatera, Santiago Quinto, which opened the show. This performance of the orchestra brought out all its dynamic talents, from the grand piano to forte, linking all the different components of the orchestra and letting one hear all

the beautiful counterpoint provided by the composer. The orchestra played very well together under its director Adolfo Arronis and more expressive subjects were treated in a very delicate way. The second half of the show started with the Pavane Op. 50 G. Fauré, from Waltz D. Shostakovich No. 2 and ending with the rhythmic Danzon No. 2 Arturo Marquez.

In the latter work we have clearly seen a development in all members of this young orchestra, who are sure to be part of the main Symphony Orchestra of Torrevieja. After the loud and sustained applause, JOST presented the popular and uplifting number of Les Toreadors No. 1 from Carmen Suite. The concert was attended, by the president of the Cultural Association Ars Aetheria, Pelayo Mellado, the conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of Torrevieja, José F. Sánchez Director, as well as councillors, Joaquín Albaladejo, Luis Maria Pizana and Thomas Ballester. Unfortunately nobody from the local Government teams was noted to be in attendance to see for themselves the wonderful talent on show from today's Torrevieja youth.

The Provincial Government and the Ministry of Culture meet in Madrid

CLOSER TIES have been developed between Alicante's President Cesar Sanchez and the Minister of Culture Inigo Mendez de Vigo in what was their first meeting since the election. The meeting between the Provincial Government President Cesar Sanchez, and the Minister of Education, Culture and Sports, Inigo Mendez de Vigo and Montojo, was a working meeting at the ministerial headquarters in Madrid to address areas for joint cooperation, and to establish synergies between the two administrations. César Sánchez has asked the Minister to intensify institutional relations with the aim of stimulating activities that position the cultural offer of the Province in line with the rest of the country. In this regard, the President has insisted that "collaboration with the Ministry is essential for the Government of Alicante, since it allows us to continue to promote culture in our province with proposals for a quality and unquestionable rigour. We realise that this meeting is to intensify the cooperation in order to preserve and publicise all of our rich heritage,” pointed out the provincial leader, who stressed that this first contact "has enabled us to strengthen ties and strengthen relations between the Alicante Provincial Government and Central Government, as we are always activate in our actions aimed at marking us able to complete nationally with the cultural offers in our region.”

Entertainment

CoastRider CoastRider - Edition 567 - Edition - October 470 - 6th March 2015 5thwww.coastridersl.com 2013

Back Stage with Rain O’Connor Who are you and what do you do? Singer and Karaoke host, originally from Ireland but now living and performing in the Orihuela Costa area. My main genres are Pop, Rock and Roll, Irish and Country. How did you start in the business? I've always loved singing since my school days and I used to sing in trad sessions back in Ireland. I got thrown in at the deep end one evening covering a karaoke night and loved it so I started learning from there. After a lot of encouragement from friends, family and other entertainers I got the confidence to do it for a living. What would you be doing if you were not an entertainer? I qualified as a photographer about ten years ago so I would be taking photos of entertainers as that is what I did before. As an entertainer who has been your biggest influence? Freddie Mercury and Tina Turner are my absolute musical heroes, in general I tend to look at performers who have been around a long time and whose music is still as popular as ever. But for the type entertainer I am, I look to the likes of Philomena Begley, Mary Black and Nathan Carter for inspiration. I started out doing pop, with a bit of soft rock and Motown mixed in there, but Irish Country and the Show bands are very popular in the part of Ireland that I’m from and I grew up listening to that style so it seemed the natural route for me to take. I was very lucky that my parents have such varied tastes in music that I was exposed to lots of different influences. Do you ever get nervous or have you suffered stage fright? I used to be terrified when I first started out, but the

more I worked the more confident I became. I still get a healthy dose of nerves though which just makes me work harder to give a better performance. What was your best moment? I couldn't pick out a best moment as I absolutely love what I do, but when the audience get up dancing, or when a person thanks you because you sang something which is special to them, that is a fantastic feeling. I also get to see hear some fantastic singers when hosting karaoke, I even had some of the cast of Cats at a gig a few weeks ago. I also love surprising family and friends when they come to visit as most of them never heard me sing before. What has been your worst moment? When I was starting out so many things went wrong

with my gear it was terrifying and it could have made me think twice about this as a career but it had the opposite affect and made me work harder and it improved my performance as I had to learn how to communicate well with the audience. What’s the best piece of advice you have received or would give someone starting out in the business? Look after your voice and your gear and work hard putting the preparation into your gigs. Vary your repertoire and play to the audience, to make sure they are enjoying it. A lot of entertainers play the same sets over and over, and no matter how good you are it becomes boring for a regular audience, but I’m constantly learning new songs and I have never played the same set twice. As for Karaoke it takes a lot of guts for some people to get up and sing in public so give them lots of encouragement so they enjoy the experience and want to do it again. Also enjoy yourself and remember how lucky you are to be doing a job you love. Any little anecdotes or interesting stories? A. Loads of funny things have happened on the karaoke nights. When I first started out a friend of mine was singing a tune but the track sounded strange and slowed down and sped up of its own accord, the poor fella kept singing in sync with the track and sang high pitched when the track sped up and deepened his voice when it slowed down, we couldn't have planned it if we tried. The whole bar was in stitches but he turned to me at the end and said 'its ok I don't think anyone noticed'. Everyone had tears running down their face laughing. People still laugh about it now, I still have a regular gig in that bar and my mate still sings at it and he's a karaoke hero. What do I need to know before retiring abroad? Better weather, cheaper living costs and potentially cheaper property than the UK can prove a strong draw for retired couples looking for a change of lifestyle. A new study ranks Spain as the most popular destination, followed by France, Australia, Ireland and Cyprus and USA equal fifth most popular destinations. South Africa and New Zealand are also very popular thanks to gentle climates. But choosing where to live is more than just looking at the place with the best beaches and highest numbers of days with sunshine. Without the right planning and advice, you can quickly get caught out by local tax laws, exchange rates and other financial arrangements. It is crucial to do your homework looking at pensions, currency, health and tax – and how to avoid being caught out by exchange rates. Specialists predict sterling is going to weaken which means it is more important than ever to get things right. Here’s what you need to know: State pension Around 1.2 million people are claiming their state pension from overseas - but not everyone is getting the same deal. Countries that aren't in the European Economic Area (EEA), or countries that don’t have a reciprocal agreement with the UK, don't grant state pension increases to people who have retired there. These countries include Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa – all appealing destinations for retirees looking for better weather and potential cheaper property than the UK. It will be increased in EU countries. The amount of state pension you receive will fluctuate with currency movements, too. You'll probably be hit with transfer charges if you get your pension transferred from a UK bank account to a foreign one. This can be avoided by setting up an international bank account and you can even set the

exchange rate by using a currency broker. HiFX for example, runs a regular payment service to enable British people who have emigrated or retired abroad to manage their currency payments via direct debit, and also protect themselves against currency fluctuation by fixing exchange rates for between six and 12 months. Buying property You can also use a similar service to lock in rate when it comes to buying your property. During the weeks or months it can take to complete the purchase, currencies can fluctuate. A “forward contract” with a currency firm will secure a rate for a future purchase. Always get advice from a local tax expert when you buy a property abroad. You may be liable for foreign taxes such as purchase tax. Plus, the Government is seeking to withdraw state pension payments to expat spouses. They will continue to receive a state pension for National Insurance contributions they have made themselves, but not for contributions made by their spouse. These changes will only affect new claims made from 2016.

Healthcare and benefits In theory, pensioners living in EU countries such as France, Spain and Italy receive free healthcare, but in practice it can be more complicated. There are various restrictions and you may get stuck when you need help the most. Although we have free universal healthcare from the NHS in the UK, this isn’t the case in other countries – so make sure you know what the situation is. In the US and Cyprus, for example, there is no free healthcare, so you’ll need to make your own provisions. It might be worth buying private medical cover. It is often cheaper than in the UK but it might be better to buy a UK policy that offers consumer protection from the regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority in the event something goes wrong. Take care over any pre-existing conditions which will only be covered if you pay extra. Cut-backs on expat benefits will reduce pensioner income for those living abroad. Expat pensioners, for example, face losing their £300 winter fuel allowance. A total of 115,000 expatriates living in seven countries – Spain, France, Greece, Portugal, Malta, Gibraltar and Cyprus – will be affected from 2015. At present, pensioners over 80 get £300 while under 80s get £200 - tax free. Tax Different countries have completely different tax systems which means it is up to you to familiarise yourself with them, especially if you’re planning to work at all. But before you go, you should tell HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) if you move abroad. If you're not required to fill in a tax return, you'll have to complete form P85 Leaving the UK - getting your tax right. HMRC will use the information on the form to send you any tax refund you're owed and work out if you'll become non-resident.

Breast cancer isn’t always a lump

How many breast cancer symptoms can you name? When women aged 70 and over were asked this question in research 48% of them only knew one symptom – a lump. While a lump or thickening in an area of your breast is one of the main warning signs for breast cancer, it’s important to know about the other, lesser-known symptoms too. In fact, about 30% of women diagnosed with breast cancer had noticed a symptom that wasn’t a lump. Public Health England’s campaign ‘Be Clear on Cancer’, aimed at women aged 70 and over, aims to increase awareness of the risk of breast cancer in women in this age group. Around 13,400 women of 70 and over are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. They account for one third of all breast cancer cases. Older women are at increased risk of breast cancer, but they are also the age group more likely to put off going to their GP when they spot cancer symptoms. So one of the main messages in this campaign is ‘don’t assume you’re past it’. If something seems different, see your

doctor, quickly. “You are never too old to get breast cancer,” says Professor Dame Sally Davies, Chief Medical Officer. “It is not always a lump and women should look for any changes in the shape of the breast, a change to a nipple or to the skin. “Spotting the signs of cancer early is

very important, so if women are concerned about any breast cancer symptoms they should contact their GP straight away.” Breast cancer comes top of the list for cancer in women in England. Around 41,200 women are diagnosed with it every year.

Around 9,500 women die because of breast cancer every year – over half are women aged 70 and over. Early diagnosis of breast cancer is vital – if you’re treated early your treatment is more likely to be successful. If breast cancer is diagnosed at the earliest stage in women in the 70 plus age group, 93% of these women will live for at least another five years. Check yourself regularly, don’t ignore possible symptoms, and if you spot any changes, or possible symptoms see your GP as soon as you can. Breast cancer symptoms you should watch out for include; • A lump or thickened area in your breast • Change in the size, feel or shape of your breast • Blood stained discharge from your nipple • A rash on or around your nipple • Changes to the shape of your nipple, such as sinking into your breast, turning inwards, or becoming irregular in shape • A dimpling effect in the skin • A swelling or lump in your under-arm area

What to eat and drink to detox Some foods are particularly good at helping you get rid of toxins. Find out which foods you should be eating more of when detoxing. First, let’s get one thing straight – your body is detoxing all the time so it’s pretty good at it. A ‘detox diet’ isn’t really one where your body is suddenly flushing out all the toxins you’ve built up over the years, it’s more a case of helping your body to do the job it already does a little better. However, if you’ve been eating an unhealthy diet and not getting much exercise, it could be that your liver and kidneys have become sluggish and no longer filter out toxins as well as they used to, so toxins have built up. Toxins, which is just another word for substances that can be harmful to the body, can come from chemicals sprayed on foods, from the air you breath in the form of pollutants, and also the products you use on your skin which are absorbed. But there are also toxins in healthy foods – apples, for example, contain tiny amounts of cyanide

in the pip. Whatever way toxins get into your body, you can help your body remove them more efficiently. These foods will help your body flush out those toxins and help bring your liver and kidneys back to performing at 100%. Cucumber As cucumber is mainly water (more than 90%) this is a good

way to increase fluid in your body while also getting digestion-helpful fibre. Garlic Garlic, along with onions, will help your liver to produce specialised enzymes that remove toxins from your body. Pulses Fibre-rich foods such as beans and lentils help your body by improving digestion (the

had a bad dream with a mean frown line between your eyebrows, try special skin tape, such as Frownies, for an instant improvement. Simply spread the skin between your eyebrows with your two fingers so it’s taut, then stick a small piece of the tape there. As you sleep the crease won’t deepen even if you frown and, when you peel off the tape in the morning, you’ll be amazed at how much the frown line has reduced. Instant wrinkle reducer Head down to your nearest garden centre to buy yourself a pot, not of anti-wrinkle cream, but of the plant aloe vera. In a study published in the Annals of Dermatology, aloe vera has been shown to reduce the signs of skin ageing, by eating just a quarter of a

teaspoon of aloe vera gel a day. It’s also been shown to help skin heal after sunburn, too. Drinking aloe vera (in a smoothie, for example) has also been shown to increase collagen production, making skin more elastic. To get the benefit from your plant you’ll need to cut off a ‘leaf’ then access the gel-like substance inside. Or, if that sounds like too much bother, aloe vera is usually available in various forms at your local health food shop. Age-spot remover Lemon and vinegar are popular go-to ingredients to remove or lighten dark age spots. You can simply apply apple cider vinegar to the spot you’d like to lighten, leave it on for a minute then rinse off. Or, if you have many age spots, you can try this scrub: cook some rice and mix in equal parts of lemon juice and vinegar. The rice works like a scrub to lift dead skin cells and the lemon juice and vinegar help to lighten the skin. Use this scrub only on

fibre) as well as helping to lower cholesterol too. Turnips Rich in sulphur, these veggies are great for detoxing. The body needs sulphur to be able to remove chemical substances such as those that end up your bloodstream via your shampoo, your skin cream and so on, as well as environmental pollutants from cars or manufacturing. Beetroots Often hailed as ‘the best detox foods’ beetroots are great at improving liver function. The red colour of beets is a result of betalain, which is also a powerful antioxidant. Apples Pectin is a type of fibre needed to bind to some toxins such as heavy metals, for example, in order for it to be flushed out of the body. And apples are a good source of pectin. Turmeric This helps your liver do its job to the best of its ability, stimulating it to work harder. Cabbage This leafy vegetable helps neutralise the toxins found in

Natural ways to smooth wrinkles Buying an anti-wrinkle cream can be a good investment, it’s your skin after all, but there are some far less expensive ways to treat your skin, making it look fresher and more youthful, as well as making it feel smoother and reducing wrinkles and frown lines. A home-made treatment for dewy-looking skin When you age your skin can begin to look dry and papery, but by using some simple food ingredients you can bring back the moisture. Use three parts of fresh cream to one part of honey (use Manuka honey if you can as it’s extremely high in antioxidants too), and add some avocado, mixing it all in the blender until you’ve got a creamy consistency. Put it on your skin for an hour then rinse off. The fresh cream will moisturise and the avocados also contain vitamin E and minerals too, as well as phytosterols which are thought to help repair damaged skin. Honey hydrates too, but it’s also a good source of antioxidants. Overnight frownremover If you wake up every morning looking like you’ve

your hands at first to make sure it’s not too harsh a treatment for your face and follow up with a moisturiser as it can be very drying. A skin peel without the price tag Expensive skin peels in salons help rejuvenate skin by removing old dead skin cells, making you look younger and your skin brighter. But you can experience the same effect at home with a lemon and some egg white. Simply mix freshly squeezed lemon juice with an egg white (one part lemon juice to one part egg white) and leave the mix on your face for ten minutes. Rinse off. You should notice the difference immediately and can repeat the procedure twice a week.

cigarette or cigar smoke. So if you’re a smoker yourself or around others who do, try eating more cabbage to give your body a hand. The fact that they’re also high in fibre means they’ll help your digestive system run smoothly too, which means toxins are eliminated more quickly and easily. Vitamin C-rich foods Red peppers, kiwi fruits, oranges - all these will help in the detoxifying process as vitamin C is what’s used to convert toxic substances into a form where they can be digested or expelled. Green tea The antioxidants in green tea, called catechins, help remove nasty substances from your body.

After Hours at Lo Crispin Tavern

Whats On Costa Blanca had a chat After Hours with David, the owner at Lo Crispin Tavern Tell us about yourselves My name is David and I am Spanish, born and bred in this area, from Rojales. I run the Lo Crispin Tavern in Urbanization Lo Crispin near Ciudad Quesada. I am the sole owner of the bar/restaurant but fortunately also have some very good staff. I have been here since December 2008. What made you open a bar? I had a successful plastering business for a while but a few years ago I was struggling with the recession and decided I needed a different direction. A friend of mine ran a local bar/restaurant and I liked the atmosphere there and the way that many customers had become their friends. I made up my mind that this was what I wanted to do and, despite knowing that it would involve a great deal of hard work and that it would become more a way of life than a job, I decided to go for it. Where did the inspiration for the name come from? I have always liked the British people and their attitude to life so I decided that I wanted to open an English-style pub and ‘tavern’ is a good old-fashioned English word. We are situated on the Lo Crispin Urbanization so we became the Lo Crispin Tavern.

Who does the cooking? And how would you describe your style? My main chef Julia is from Russia. She has been in Spain 15 years and worked in a number of restaurants. We do a combination of traditional British and Spanish dishes. Our British customers like having the option of familiar English fayre and that of their adopted country. For good measure Julia sometimes does something Russian-style as several people have requested this. What’s your favourite dish on the menu? Chicken breast with mushroom sauce. Don’t ask me why, I just love it! Maybe it’s the way Julia cooks it. Favourite day of the week? I think Sundays as there is so much going on. We have a carvery and later a quiz and sometimes karaoke too. We also show all the popular sports on TV and there is always something on a Sunday. Any interesting tales? The Tavern also serves as the community centre for the urbanization. This year, apart from having a Russian chef, we have had a Russian birthday party and a Russian wedding. For the birthday they asked if they could bring a live pony for the children to play with. After obtaining

the necessary licences and clearances I agreed. A good time was had by all, including the pony. The wedding party all went outside for a traditional Russian toast which involved smashing all the glasses against the wall at the end (fortunately they brought their own). A tradition I did not know about is that both bride and groom take a bite out of a loaf of bread and the one that takes the largest bite will be head of the family. If I remember rightly the bride won! Find out what Lo Crispin Tavern have going on each day of the week at whatsoncostablanca.com and book a table by phoning 646 777 658. They open from 11am each day apart from Thursdays in the winters October – April.

Ajo Blanco - White Garlic Gazpacho Ajo blanco (white garlic) is one of the most popular variations of gazpacho and like its cousin, it comes from Andalusia, mainly Granada and Malaga, though it's also prepared in Extremadura and Huelva. Its one of the many dishes Spain inherited from the Moors before the unification of the country, as its base ingredients is the almond. However we know that Romans ate a similar preparation that consisted of one part water, one part vinegar and bread crumbs, seasoned with different herbs and spices. Andalusia was and still is mainly an agricultural region and peasants worked under the harsh Andalusian sun. This is why the rich culture of cold soups developed in the area, they had to keep you from dehydrating and to be nutritious at the same time to resist the long hours working in the country Ajo blanco is perhaps the closest variation of how it was prepared before tomatoes were brought to Spain, after America was discovered. In Spain there are festivities dedicated to ajo blanco. In Malaga the celebration party takes place on September 2, with ajo blanco tastings. Likewise, in Herrera del Duque (Badajoz, Extremadura) there is an ajo blanco contest on August 15. In fact in the town of Herrera del Duque, they also have their own separate version of the dish that uses breadcrumbs to give the soup more sustenance. This dish is normally eaten during the colder months as it provides people with more calories to sustain them throughout the winter. In certain parts of the countryside surrounding the Spanish city of Granada, ajo blanco soup is normally eaten with a good 'papa asá' which is a roast potato. Meanwhile in Malaga, it is often accompanied by a

selection of fruit such as moscatel grapes and pieces of apple of melon. Fruit and this cold soup go suprisingly well and together are extremely refreshing. Great for those hot Spanish summer days. In fact, ajo blanco is a Spanish soup that pretty much goes with anything. It is not uncommon to find it served with Spanish tortilla, figs, grapes and other ingredients. This means that no matter what kind of menu you are planning, you can always count on ajo blanco to fit in there. Today, ajo blanco is seeing a revival of some sorts in the more upmarket restaurants in Spain. The distinctive

soup is now becoming an important piece in certain areas of creative cuisine, and is often used to decorate other dishes as well. Ajo blanco is mainly consumed in the summer months, as it's served cold and it's very refreshing. It has a creamy texture very soft on the palate, but some people like it more liquefied so that it can be drunk from a glass, so when you prepare it, do so to your taste. Ajo blanco is very easy to make and uses inexpensive and common ingredients. It's also a very healthy choice as it has a high nutritious value derived from garlic and almonds. There isn't really a rule to make ajo blanco, each cook prepares it to his or her liking, but there is a general guideline that you can follow. Ingredients: • 200 grams of blanched almond • 100 grams of bread crumbs • 2 peeled garlic cloves • 1.5 liters of cold water • 200 ml of olive oil • 1 tb of vinegar Preparation: • Soak the bread crumbs in a little water • Grind the almonds and garlic cloves • Mix the soaked bread crumbs with the garlic and almonds until you obtain a white paste • Add the oil gradually, as if making mayonnaise, while stirring • Add water until it acquires the desired texture, it can be a thin cream or very liquid, it depends on the consumer's taste • Refrigerate and serve cold. It can be served with grapes or melon

Don’t make these seven motoring mistakes The eight motoring mistakes below aren’t a scientific list, nor are they in any particular order. These are some observations from a few decades behind various service and parts counters. We’ve put this list forward in the hope it will help save some grief, time, and money on behalf of both drivers and their service providers. 1. Misunderstanding adjustment warranties: The overwhelming majority of new cars carry an adjustment warranty of only one year or 20,000 km (whichever occurs first). Carmakers rightly assume that the need for any adjustment such as wheel balancing to cure a vibration or door adjustment to silence a wind-noise will usually raise its annoying head long before this term expires. After that, the customer is faced with the bill. The tip to remember here is to get the vehicle into the dealership service department before that limit is reached if a problem arises. This also applies to base and power-train coverage — don’t wait until after they expire to try to get a failure covered. 2. Not being flexible: More than ever, customers are expecting instantaneous results to time-consuming auto repair concern. It’s not surprising when a great many complicated consumer products are now serviced with component replacements eliminating a world of down-time. Unfortunately, while the automotive world has kept up with technological advancements, the processes of diagnosis and repair have

become more difficult, not easier. So when a car owner shows up for a service appointment for some routine maintenance and perhaps one other issue but then adds several other concerns to the repair request, there’s a need for flexibility in either leaving the vehicle for additional time or rescheduling another appointment. 3. Right fill spot, wrong fluid: One of the most common errors is adding the wrong fluid to the right fill spot under the hood. Carmakers did away with plainword labels for such things as windshieldwasher fluid and coolant and have

substituted a supposedly universal icon system. Usually someone adds engine coolant to their washer fluid or vice versa and discovers their mistake the next time they use the washer and wonders why the windshield is streaked and stained. If washer fluid is added to the engine coolant, it can lead to an expensive flush and refill or an overheating problem. The associated error that goes along with this is using the summer bug-splatter formula washer fluid too far into the fall. This fluid (it usually has a reddish or orange tint) will freeze at below zero temperatures, often damaging the washer fluid reservoir, pump, and lines. Tips: Clean each of the under-hood fill location caps and mark them with a permanent marker in a language you understand. Make sure you have used up any bug-washer fluid that may still be in your vehicle before the cooler temperatures set in. 4. Mother nature doesn’t belong under the bonnet Two nature groups can wreak havoc under the hood: critters and organics (leaves/pine needles), and three if you count the humans that ignore the first two. At this time of year, woodland creatures love to make nests under hoods and their tiny teeth can do major damage to vehicle wiring, hoses and lines. They can also make a mess of their choice of food storage areas, namely air filter boxes and heater intake ducts. When the leaves are falling and your vehicle is parked outside, those same

leaves can collect at the bottom of the windshield, effectively blocking the heater’s air intake system just when you needed heat the most. Tips: Remove any source of food from your parking area (e.g. bulk pet food), and if this doesn’t deter your squirrel/chipmunk/mice friends, try lightly spraying a watereddown mix of natural peppermint oil in and around the engine bay. During the fall season, pop your vehicle’s hood from time to time and clear out the leaves or pine needles collecting at the bottom of the windshield or anywhere else in the engine bay (be careful of warm surfaces). This organic material can also present a fire hazard if it comes into contact with hot exhaust parts. 5. What locking wheel nut key? Locking wheel nuts are the largest pain in the rear for repair shops and car owners alike. That so-called security system your dealer said was mandatory (only because they had wheel-theft problems) is a real treat to deal with when you’re on the side of the road with a flat and suddenly realize you haven’t seen your wheel key since that tire service eight months ago. It can also be a real hassle when you get a call from your shop saying they will have to charge extra to remove the locking nuts because you haven’t left (or they can’t find) the key. Any serious wheel thief will be able to defeat just about any wheel lock system, so when taking delivery of a new vehicle demand the dealer remove the wheel locks, or barring that, replace them yourself and throw them away. 6. Confusing vibration and noise problems: Do you hear it or feel it? This distinction, or rather lack of it, is responsible for more wasted shop time (and therefore someone’s money) than any other miscommunication between customers and service counter staff. If your vehicle has an unusual vibration, it’s usually something you can feel in the steering wheel or in the driver’s seat. It may be bad enough to cause the mirrors to shake or a door to vibrate but it doesn’t always cause a noise you can hear. On the other hand, a worrisome noise is detected by hearing and should involve a more precise description, e.g. “my car makes a grinding noise from the front when I apply the brakes.” Dropping off a vehicle with the vague statement, “my car makes an unusual noise” is like leaving a blank cheque. 7. Spending more money when trying to save money: Those who chase website coupon deals or the advertised lowest price often flit from one shop to another. They seldom take the time to develop any relationship with just one service provider and they often end up spending more in the long run. Using the same shop for the majority of your auto repair and upkeep needs means that service department will have a history of everything they’ve done on the vehicle. This can help to eliminate duplicate or unnecessary work and will create a willingness on the part of the shop to provide the best prices and service to a loyal customer.

2015 Kia Optima: New version of Facelift ahoy! Porsche rolls out the saloon prepares for launch Cayman Black Edition (2015) The next version of Kia’s saloon will be more than a pretty face – with estate, performance and plug-in variants part of the plans too The Kia Optima has been a handsome left-field presence in the saloon car market over the last few years. The nextgeneration model is going to change that, though – not by being any less handsome, but by adding an estate version into the mix. Launched at the Frankfurt show, with a production roll-out set to follow imminently, the Euro-spec Optima will be powered by a new version of the familiar 1.7-litre CRDi turbo-diesel engine from the outgoing model. This will develop 139bhp and 251lb ft and emit 110g/km – so, all the numbers moving gently in the right direction.

The engine will be bolted to a sixspeed manual as standard. There’ll be a new auto option, too, in the shape of Kia’s latest seven-speed dual-clutch unit. It all sits in a subtly redesigned body that’s slightly longer, wider and taller than before. It’s rangier in the wheelbase too, by more or less exactly one inch – all of which goes to the knee and shoulder room enjoyed by the rear-seat passengers. The body is tauter as well as bigger, with greater use of high-tensile steel backed up by carbon fibre making it much stiffer than the old model – which won’t do any harm to its dynamics or refinement. Built in Korea, the saloon version of the new Optima will go on sale in the UK before the end of the year. The aforementioned station wagon will follow next summer. Beyond that, the Optima is expected to join Kia’s GT revolution as a new performanceorientated model comes in at the top of the range. That should happen by the end of next year – and then in 2017, further evidence of Kia’s arrival in the mainstream will come from the addition of a plug-in hybrid.

Hark! Is that the sound of a facelift around the corner? Porsche has unveiled the new 2015 Cayman Black Edition, its regular limited edition treatment historically rolled out whenever an updated model is waiting in the wings. It is expected that the newly turbocharged four-cylinder Boxster and Cayman twins to be launched in 2016, so consider this as a finale to the coupe range before the 981.2 generation lands in dealerships. What’s new on the 2015 Porsche Cayman Black? Well, there’s the all-in-black paintwork, for starters. It’s been seen previously on special-edition Boxsters and 911s, and the black look extends

inside the cabin too where the partleather seats are retrimmed. This is mainly an extra equipment job and the spec of the entry-level 2.7 with a regular 271bhp is inflated with the addition of: • Porsche Communication Management (PCM) sat-nav • Auto-dip mirrors • Rain-sensing wipers • Cruise control • Parking sensors front and rear • Sport Design steering wheel • Sound Package Plus • 20in Carrera Classic alloys • Bi-xenon cornering headlamps How much for a Cayman Black? No word on UK prices yet, but in Germany the special edition will cost €59,596. It’s on sale now.

Football y FĂştbol

AFTER AN interesting weekend of football which, apart from various managers leaving their posts, would have been difficult to predict, just a short article this week, looking at all the rumours flying around. He was favourite to be first sacked and that was the case after their one all tie with rivals Everton this week, and apparently Liverpool will appoint their next manager within a week of Sunday's sacking of Brendan Rodgers with Jurgen Klopp being the bookmakers' favourite to succeed Rodgers. According to the Independent, Rodgers was told of the decision over the phone by Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon after the 1-1 draw with Everton. The Reds will open discussions with former Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp in the next few days. Pravda have said that Klopp has already agreed a three-year deal and will bring Zeljko Buvac, his assistant at Dortmund, with

him. Former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti flew to London from Italy on Sunday, but Klopp remains the favourite to take over at Anfield. While if the Klopp deal does not go though, Liverpool are also considering former Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo as Rodgers's replacement. Another manager under a little pressure is Jose Mourinho who apparently survived a crisis meeting at Chelsea after owner Roman Abramovich spent hours at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening with other members of Chelsea's hierarchy, holding an inquest into the club's poor start to the season. Life at Sunderland is also changing with former West Ham manager Sam Allardyce being named the favourite to take charge at Sunderland after the departure of Dick Advocaat. Alternatively, Burnley boss Sean Dyche is the man Sunderland want to replace Advocaat and the Black Cats

Torrevieja Fight Back To Claim Totally Deserved Point THE FIRST of two back to back local derby's provided Torrevieja fans with something more to hope for the future of the club. The final score of CD Torrevieja 2 - 2 Crevillente Deportivo does little justice to the home team who let in two soft goals but were hardly bothered the rest of the match. As Chris Darwen their PR Man noted: In 'Los Clasicos de Sal Part One', CD Torrevieja stormed back from two goals down to take a totally deserved point against Crevillente at Estadio Vicente Garcia. Torrevieja’s best performance of the season was an entertaining spectacle, a thorough mix of attacking panache, kamikaze defending, true grit and, at times, players on entirely different wavelengths. However, it made for a brilliant spectacle for the bumper crowd and everyone will have left feeling that Torrevieja will have been disappointed just to draw.

Players on entirely different wavelengths was to be expected, as Pedreno shuffled the pack once again to see which cards fell on the table. From last weekend’s defeat at Novelda there were five changes. Out went goalkeeper Oscar, defenders Ricardo Cavas and Eddy and the striking duo of Lewis and Cesar. Without knowledge of any injuries, it was surprising to see Eddy and Lewis dropped. The experienced defender has been much improved this season to date, and it could be argued that the young Englishman has been Torrevieja’s best player so far. The formation changed again, switching from the narrow 41212 diamond back to the 4231 by which Torrevieja started the season. In came Miguel, Quintero, Adrian, Juanma and Juanfran.

Torrevieja started very brightly, pinning Crevillente back into their half for the opening ten minutes. The ball was being moved with a positive tempo and the intense pressing game when without the ball appeared to have returned. Juanfran, in front of the excellent Fondo Sur drums, had a half chance but was only able to find the goalkeeper with a tame shot. Crosses were coming in from the left and it looked like there could be an early goal. There was, but sadly not at the end Torrevieja hoped for. Despite all their attacking invention, each time Crevillente got past the Torrevieja midfield it looked like there might be trouble and there was at the first time of asking. Vicente was slow to close down Tonino and his cross was headed past Miguel by Jaime, Miguel possibly thinking he could have done more to stop the ball creeping in. You could feel the confidence drain from the players instantly, and it was odds on that Crevillente could pounce again. They did, just five minutes later. Again Vicente was unable to prevent the cross, a lucky deflection then falling to Carlos totally unmarked. He calmly slotted the ball home. This time there was a totally different reaction from Torrevieja. If the first goal had made them lose confidence, the second fired them up and they went on the attack. Crevillente barely got a touch of the ball for the remainder of the first half and Torrevieja were rewarded for such bravery. A short corner was taken on the left just after half an hour and Sanchez let fly the sort of cross-cum-shot that Willian of Chelsea has become a specialist in. The ball sailed over the head of Rojo and

Torrevieja were back in the game. Juanma let fly from distance a couple of time but was off target and then in injury time a fantastic chance fell to Juanfran. Set free by a direct ball from Luis Carlos the front man was clean through. However three touches were taken when one touch and a shot would have sufficed, and the defence were able to get back and block yet another tame effort. The score was 2-1 at half time to the visitors. The second half started with more effort than finesse and it looked initially as though Crevillente were going to be able to sit deep and maybe pick up a third on the counter attack. Juanma went close again, driving through the lines and unleashing a powerful left footed drive which Rojo was able to parry away. Twenty minutes passed and the game felt as though it was fizzling out, and then Quintero got on his horse. The big centre back, not having the most comfortable of days defensively, intercepted the ball at the back and laid it wide to Adrian. He then galloped his way forward, determined to be on the end of any cross that might make its way into the box. Adrian did not fail him, dribbling twenty yards himself before swinging the ball into the mixer. Rojo came to collect, but just as his hands were about to clutch the ball the big forehead of Quintero intercepted. The ball looped into the corner of

the net and the Vicente Garcia exploded. For the second time this season Quintero had scored the equalising goal from a 2-0 deficit. Do not think that Crevillente decided to take this lying down. Not a bit of it, they rattled the bar from a free kick and it took fine individual blocks from Luis Carlos and then, in injury time, Burguillos to stop shots hitting the target. On reflection, given the even amount of chances, a draw could be argued as the fair result. However, if Torrevieja had defended with confidence and belief in the crazy five minutes that saw Crevillente score twice there is no doubt in my mind that they would have deservedly claimed all three points. “Los Clasicos de Sal” moves on to part two next weekend, October 11th. CD Torrevieja entertain another local rival in Orihuela, with a 5.00pm kick off. With one point separating the two sides towards the bottom of the Tercera Division, it promises to be an entertaining battle. It is a Dia del Club, meaning all non-season ticket holders will pay 12€ to get in, and season ticket holders a reduced 8.00€. Keep an eye out on www.twitter.com/cdtorrevieja_en and the Facebook page. Why not get properly involved in your local club and become a Socio?
