Manchester City walk it against the Mentals Monte Mentals, those walking footballers from Los Montesinos, played an entertaining two days of football against a visiting squad from Manchester City last week. Thankfully the weather men completely got the weather report wrong and although Thursday was a little overcast, the sun shone brightly for the teams on Friday. The more experienced, younger and drilled Manchester City team ended up winning more games than the Mentals did however, lessons were learnt by the fledging Costa Blanca squad, so never let it be said that you can't teach old dogs new tricks. City brought out an A and B team while the Mentals fielded two evenly matched teams, so with splitting their better players between two squads, neither team could cope with the first team from Manchester City, although if the Mentals had chosen a first and second team, matters might have been different. And while walking football might not attract Manchester City Players of yesteryear such as Colin Bell, Mike Summerbee or Asa Hartford, it does attract players of all ages from fifty to seventy plus, who can still enjoy a style of football, even though many hung their boots up decades
ago. At the end of the day, it's all about having some fun, staying fit and doing what these seniors really enjoyed in their youth and never thought they would have the opportunity to do again. Last year, 'City in the Community' introduced Manchester to Walking Football, a revolutionary sport designed for over-50s, but open to all age groups wanting to keep fit. The programme quickly became a success and the number of participants getting involved just keeps on growing. The one key difference between Walking Football and standard football is simple - no running allowed,
although it must be said, there are different interpretations of what is walking and what falls in between. Head of City in the Community, Mike Green, couldn’t be happier with the impact this initiative is already having on the community. “You never know which activities are going to draw a crowd, but this one definitely is. Every week our numbers grow and it’s just amazing to see so many people in the community getting active and having fun as they do it. Walking Football has it all really being a highly rewarding and social sport. I think that’s
2,508 Signatures and still counting Signatures for the Save Our Park campaign have now passed the 2,500 mark as more and more people back the campaign to have the pentapartito council restart the project. Last week, 2,408 signatures were officially handed into the PROP office in Torrevieja, and will be officially presented as part of the Council Meeting at the end of the month, no matter whether or not the Mayor Jose Manuel Dolon or other pentapartito councillors wish to address the issue or not. Space permitting, anyone who wishes can attend Council meetings, which are held on the third floor of the town hall, on the last Thursday of the month, at 5.00pm.
why so many people have taken to it. We just hope it keeps on growing, because a healthy lifestyle only gets more important the older you get and the well-being of our local community is extremely important to everyone at CITC.” CITC’s Walking Football sessions will be held every Tuesday at the Manchester Tennis and Football Centre on the Etihad Campus. Each session costs just £2 and is definitely worth a
shot. Locally, more and more teams are starting up and along with the Monte Mentals there are popular teams in Playa Flamenca and further inland. Plans are already afoot to start up new teams in Torrevieja and Dream Hills among others. Torrevieja celebrates Valencia Day
On Friday the Mayor along with the majority of both sitting and opposition councillors, including the Vice President of the Alicante Provincial Council, Eduardo Dolon took part in the symbolic flag raising ceremony for Valencia Day. This simple act was attended by a large audience and accompanied by the participation of Union Musical Torrevieja (UMT), who interpreted the Hymn to Torrevieja and the Valencia Hymn during which the Mayor Torrevieja raised the flag of Valencia, ending with the interpretation of the Spanish National Anthem. The event was also attended by the Salt Queen, the Reina de la Sal, Ainara Antelo and her 'Dama' Marta de Miguel. After the ceremony finished, some people attending tried to talk to the Mayor and other members of the pentapartito council, asking for solutions and answers to their many problems.
