APYMECO hold a special meeting The Association of Merchants and Professionals in Torrevieja (Apymeco) called an emergency meeting for all of its members that was held last night in its headquarters in Calle Ramon Gallud 115. The call requested the assistance of all partners, numbering about two hundred, detailing the fact that Board of Apymeco is "in a critical situation, in terms of campaigns, events, projects and agreements that directly affect their business." The summons to the meeting was called by the president of the organization, Caridid Salmeron, who highlighted the fact that "individual and collective support and commitment is needed to get out of this difficult situation in which trade is Torrevieja." Help and support from the new pentapartito council has been poor, especially from the Department of Commerce. This fact was highlighted by the fact that the Mayor, Jose Manuel Dolon and other council members, including the Green party's Councillor for Commerce, told untruths to Apymeco few weeks ago when he publicly announced that the MS Amadea would be sending 90% of their guests on evening shore excursions to Cartagana and Zenia Blvd: a statement that was completely unfounded and untrue and even the Director of Cruising at Phoenix Reising questioned where the Mayor had received his information from. As a result, Apymeco publicly denounced the Mayor

and the pentapartito council for their lack of foresight of activities for cruise passengers who arrived on the ship 'MS Amadea'. However, thanks to the Costa Blanca Tourism Board getting involved, and the Town Hall being also forced into action, eventually most of the guests from the MS Amadea came ashore and visited the city during the hours that the ship was in Torrevieja. However the Mayor was totally conspicuous on the day by his absence, as was the Councillor for Commerce, as during the entire time that the Cruise ship was in port, they were nowhere to be seen. On a history making day when Torrevieja received their first cruise ship ever, it was only thanks to the concerted efforts of Apymeco and the involvement of the Costa Banca Tourism Board that turned the ship arrival into a success. Other commentators have pointed out in the media that it seemed as if the pentapartito government would have

A Star is Born Torrevieja’s own singer songwriter Shani Ormiston will be winging her way to Hollywood after securing an unbelievable 7th nomination at the Music in Media awards to be held November 11th at The Fonda Theatre, Hollywood California. The songwriter penned ‘Brave’ some years ago and the song has been nominated three years in a row in the Adult Contemporary Category – let’s hope its third time lucky. Shani began to really make a name for herself in 2008 after the release of her first album ‘This Is Me’. Eleven songs in Spanish and English achieved worldwide recognition with their ‘fresh and catchy’ feel. The single ‘How Do You Know’ reached number 1 in Radio Roda Albacete charts and achieved airplay on other well-known local radio stations as well as further afield. Her second album ‘Once Upon A Time’ released in 2012, featured ten songs with a ‘European dance-pop sound’ and won several awards including Best Soloist

Musical Work 2012-13 at the Provincial Youth Awards in Alicante. The Hollywood Music Media Awards is a contest to promote emerging artists globally. Shani won the Coastrider Best Female Vocalist award in 2012 and went on to represent Spain at Italy’s premier music event Biela Festival Autori e Cantautori. She has received invitations to perform with some household names along the way such as Ricky Vallance, Leo Segarra, Joe Longthorne, Christina del Valle of Amistades Peligrosas and Margharita Pirri – the Italian vocal goddess whose own composition was selected for the Armani television adverts this year. In June Shani won second prize at The International Original Music Festival in Alicante with a mesmerising performance of one of her own compositions. The ability to write her emotive songs in both Spanish and English ensure that Shani’s light will continue to shine bright for a long time to come.

preferred the ship arrival to be a complete failure so that the council could then lay the blame at the feet of the opposition Partido Popular, who organised the ship to call into Torrevieja, when they were in power. Last week the pentapartito council announced that they were spending 18,000€ planning a Zombie Survival game on Halloween night. The council also cancelled the planned Halloween Parade and special shopping night for Halloween, which over the past two years has attracted thousands of visitors to the town centre and resulted in major revenue being generated by shops, cafes, restaurants and bars in the town centre. However the Zombie Survival game does not start until 11.00pm, resulting in Halloween being 'just another Saturday night' in the Town Centre, with the shops closing at their normal time and without any additional revenue being generated. To add to this insult to injury, the Zombie Survival expects to attract at least 2,000 game players thus pulling a lot of trade away from city centre bars and all the activities that they had planned for the evening. To date, the Department of Commerce run by the pentapartito council has yet to add one new activity to increase trade or commerce for business in Torrevieja. The Coastrider has been a proud supporter of APYMECO for more than a decade and wish them all the success for their future endeavours.

This summer Shani has been performing a series of shows at The Casino Mediterraneo, La Zenia and has recently performed at the prestigious Hotel W in Barcelona. A multinational insurance company were hosting the event at Hotel W and specifically invited Shani to perform and also to sing the theme tune to their current advertising campaign.

Shani is about to start a series of concerts at the La Manga Club Hotel and other venues throughout the Costa Blanca, no doubt also ensuring that she has cam keep her eye on the award ceremony in Hollywood as well. You can find out where Shani Ormiston is playing on artistsdirect-spain.com or visit Shani’s website to find out more or download her songs www.shaniormiston.com.

Natural Parks offer three new routes

The La Mata and Torrevieja Natural Parks will be offering three trails offering natural, cultural and tourism values. The routes start on October 25th and although free, registration is required to participate as numbers for each session are limited to 50. Expert guides accompany visitors on these routes and they will be conducted in Spanish, English and French. Pentapartito Councillor for Tourism and Environment, Fanny Serrano announced the new guided tours of the Natural Parks of the Lagunas de La Mata and Torrevieja accompanied by the Regional Director of Environment, Carmen Catala who offered: "full

cooperation to the City for such initiatives." Local biologist Juan Antonio Pujol, said that the three routes have been developed in order to raise awareness of the natural, cultural and tourism values of the Park. Pujol detailed the content of each of the routes. In the first, called "Birds of the Nature Reserve" about the birds that inhabit the park throughout the year, visitors are taught how to act as genuine ornithologists and how they can fully enjoy the hides to discover the birds on their own. This tour is held on Sunday October 25th and will be repeated on 19th December. "La Mata, vineyards, water and salt" is

Artists For Refugees An amazing day was had by all! On the 12th October at Villamartin Plaza, the place was rocking to local acts and bands who had come to give their time and support to the Artists For Refugees cause. The whole event was set up by local bar and restaurant owner Steve Ahmed who almost single handily orchestrated the whole event. Steve commented “We are all refugees, all immigrants. We all come from other countries and it seems horrific to me that kids, people are dying for trying to do something we take as our right. I had to do something”. Well Steve – you did good - they were literally rocking in the aisles at Villamartin Plaza that crazy day. Bryn Slack of The Streeters put together an excellent non-stop show of some of the Costas finest musicians – something for everyone. Surprise guests were saved till last with an impromptu session with the members of several bands all joining together on stage for a spectacular. You missed a treat if you were not there. Tim Taylor, Meet Laaf, Backyard Session, The Streeters, Steve Plant, Los Duques, Let It Roll and Kolted rounding the night off beginning with an acoustic set then inviting two former band members – now with Monos - on stage and then inviting The Streeters up on stage too. It seemed like the plaza erupted with almost everyone on their feet. Local artists including Art Of Corax auctioned off their canvasses, all painted

for the event, in aid of the cause and the raffle seemed to go on forever with so many prizes donated. The top prize donated by La Bocana Watersports Centre in Torrevieja of a Cable Ski session went to former league footballer Glenn Jones, now living in Spain. Mariella Slack did an excellent job depriving people of their money for raffle tickets – who could resist Mariella’s charm? There are a number of collection tins still out until the end of October and The Hen’s teeth are collecting until the end of the month, there are also a number of sponsored events running until the end of the month. On the day, nearly €2000 was raised with many of the bars in the plaza donating cash and or prizes. A final total will be announced at the end of the month. You can also still donate via the Artists For Refugees Facebook page. All the monies raised go to help charities on the ground such as MOAS – who operate boats to rescue people from the water, Save The Children who provide blankets, food and Casitas who also provide shelter, clothes and comfort.

Massive "March for Life" against breast cancer

On Sunday hundreds of people from the city of Torrevieja along with members from all political parties, took part in the "March for Life" organized by the AECC of Torrevieja in collaboration with the City Council and the Rotary Club. The walk departed from the Paseo Juan Aparicio, at the Man of the Sea Statue to the Soraya cafe and back, to support women suffering from breast cancer and their families, with more than five hundred people showing their solidarity to the cause. There were two information desks from the AECC set up; one at the Man of the Sea monument, and another

at the Soraya cafeteria. At both desks they had brochures and information on early diagnosis and several articles with the World Day Against Breast Cancer. One of the many walkers, Jenny said: The Marcha por la Vida was due to start at 11.00am but the queue grew and grew and it was about 11.15am when we set off. By the time I got to the head of the queue the organisers had run out of pink t-shirts and number plates but the rest of us got a little pink ribbon buttonhole and a bag with sun cream samples. The numbers went up to over

800 and beyond and there could have been over 1000 people taking part. The prom was overtaken by people in pink t-shirts who went right along to the cafe Soraya and back. A wave of men, women, kids, babies in buggies and dogs. A great success. Yesterday, Monday October 19th was World Day Against Breast Cancer, and more information desks were set up around the city on Calle Concepción, local health centres, Carrefour and the University Hospital of Torrevieja, to raise awareness about breast cancer and how to detect early detection.

Partido Popular looking positive The Popular Party has put forward new motions that accentuate the "positive" for Torrevieja. Opposition leader Eduardo Dolon said: "So far the government have not processed any, so they are just sitting in a drawer". The spokesman for the Municipal PP in the City of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, held a press conference to report on the various motions filed by the Municipal Group, which will be discussed at Board of Spokesmen. Of the 8 motions to be discussed this time, 6 are from the Popular Party, all with positive proposals linked to different aspects of interest. To these, there are those presented in the previous Board of Spokesmen, of which of the five presented, three were from the PP and one was a plan developed together with C's, with all awaiting answers. Eduardo Dolon said that "so far he has not received any feedback, so I expect they have been put into a drawer. This time around the PP present one on modernizing local government, another representing a solution to the plight of school transport, that the pentapartito have deigned to analyse. Also we propose the adoption of a Pact for Education Autonomy and again this has been met with absolute silence. Most pending is the decrease of IBI, a report they had within 20 days after the plenary and so we have called a meeting. “The pentapartito have never called for a meeting, nor have they made any kind of report. From what we have seen, they do not accept our recommendations. This was made clearer after the IU Councilman called a public press event to say that they were looking into a breach

of bylaws. We're still waiting to see the sanctions that are going to impose." Eduardo Dolon also reported the content of the motions that were presented to the Board of Spokesmen. It is the applicant's disapproval of Councillor Marzá, the defence of a district education, defence of the Tajo-Segura, upholding the rule of law and the cohesion of Spain, the application of a new financing system and accession of the City of Torrevieja, the commitment to democratic quality reached in the Provincial de Alicante. The latter, was approved with a broad consensus aimed at protecting the rights of media and councillors, and to deepen the values of transparency and good governance. Regarding the situation of the school bus, Eduardo Dolon lamented the fact that families have to resubmit

The local branch of the Fapa refuses to leave the Cultural Centre The local branch of the Provincial Federation of Associations of Parents Gabriel Miró, has received written notification from the Department of Culture, informing them of the need to leave their offices in the Virgen del Carmen Cultural centre in the shortest possible time, where they have their current facilities of their headquarters on the third floor. The decision is motivated by the closure order brought by the pentapartito council of the Municipal Theatre and the eviction of the office areas, which currently houses the administrative offices of the council itself and the Municipal Institute of Culture Joaquin Chapaprieta, which must move in the next few days to the Cultural Center. Along with the local branch of the FAPA, falling under the same circumstances is the collective cultural association Ars Creatio, which also occupies a floor space in that centre and they too must leave for the same reason. Last week both the provincial president of FAPA, Ramon Lopez, and the local delegate, Patricia Muñoz, explained that "the only alternative we have is that we contact with the Councillor for Education to share a local on Avenida Gregorio Maranon, sharing a space with the collective Ampas Torrevieja.” Both said they rejected the offer because they claim that "said premises do not meet minimum conditions of safety and

accessibility," adding that "we will not give in and we're not leaving where we are." It's been noted that very little, if anything, seems to have been done to certify the Municipal Theatre for use. It was also noted that the period of notice given was only a few days, given the fact that this is a decision brought on by the pentapartito government and thus they should have been aware of the need to move departments around from the first day that they, the pentapartito government decided to close the Municipal Theatre. Other commentators have also mentioned that this amounts to a further show of the lack of inexperience shown by the governing council, who from the outset should have realised that that in closing the Municipal Theatre would mean closing the administrative offices also.

the application again and for the aggravation and the shortage of time to do so. Surprisingly, parents have just 15 days to present them, making the dissemination by the City five days after publication. But the worst is Art. 14 of the call (available in http://www.dipalicante.es/bop2/pdftotal/2015/10/05_192/2015_0148 63.pdf ) concerning the payment, which says literally "The payment of this aid will be monthly. Although the aid recipient is the / the student / a, to be a help for the payment of a particular service (busing) the payment is made directly to the City Council / as company / as borrower / as service upon presentation of the corresponding monthly bill (in arrears), which attach individualized report that the scholarship students have been effectively service users during the corresponding month." Eduardo Dolon indicated "the previous system was absolutely legal and that goes to show that the decision of the pentapartito was purely political, not caring about children or families, which has caused a major decline in the number of users. It has impoverished the quality of service and has generated serious injury to a significant number of families torrevejenses. The new pentapartito system from Mayor Jose Manuel Dolon has left many children walking to school or using the regular bus service, which has caused real chaos in the arrival and departure of school buses, and every night now many families are faced with the uncertainty of how to take their children to school the next day. All this gives the same because his obsession to harm the Popular Party blinds them."

Changing to Spanish passport

The Government in Madrid has addressed the decree regulating the means to acquire Spanish nationality. The certified documentation and fees for exams may cost more than 300 euros to seekers. Last week the Council of Ministers looked at the regulation governing the procedure for the acquisition of Spanish nationality by residence, which came into force last Friday. The Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, chaired the Cabinet meeting which was attended by all members of the Cabinet. On Thursday the law came into force to reform the Civil Registry amending the procedures for obtaining citizenship by residence, the management of which has, until now been free but now between the administrative fees, certified documents and licenses for tests that must be done, it may cost more than 300€ to applicants. In particular, foreigners wishing to apply for citizenship will have to pay an initial rate of 100€ just for bringing proceedings and regardless of what the final result is. Otherwise, the file will not

be processed, which until now did not happen because the management of civil registers was free. Also, if the 'alien' is not native of a country where the official language is Castilian, you will have to undergo a language test at the Cervantes Institute for DELE Spanish Diploma at A2 or higher. Enrolment for this test, with the first call on 20th November, it will cost 121€. Whether or not one is a Hispanic speaker, those aspiring nationality will have to stand the test of constitutional and cultural knowledge of Spain (CCSE), a type test examination of 25 questions that one must answer correctly at least 15 questions, and whose call requests the payment of 85€, entitling one to a single attempt. If one fails, the applicant will have to pay again. The first review will be on 29th October. This test has led to a greater influx in the civil registers of places like Madrid. For those who already hold a European Passport, there is no reason or possible advantage of having Spanish Nationality, except for possibly personal, financial or family reasons.

Sports wants to expand the municipal schools in the indoor arena Torrevieja's Councillor for Sports, Pablo Samper announced that one of the priority issues of his department is to unlock the final work required to open the new Multipurpose Pavillion which was started but not finished by the previous municipal government. The building is located beside the Pavilion Cecilio Gallego, in the City Sports. Samper reported that last July, the company awarded the final phase of the new sports arena, had to be sanctioned by the City for "breach of contract" and that currently most of the problems for completion "are bureaucratic so we hope we can solve this soon as possible." The intention is that when completed, this new space will further expand the number of municipal sports schools. This issue was raised a few days ago, when there was the offer from Club Taekwondo Torrevieja's Director Domingo Gómez, opened a new school for the practice of this sport among young people but noted that many left the sport after starting in lower grades for lack of somewhere to practice. Pablo Samper

said that one of his purposes is to study the creation of this and other municipal schools, but first they must complete the pavilion. The facility has two floors that will house three multipurpose rooms of over 200 square meters each, and 400 square meters in an area specially prepared under the specific conditions for practicing rhythmic gymnastics and other sports. Sited on what was the old tennis courts beside the Municipal Cecilio Gallego Pavilion (with the Blue Roof ) this new multipurpose pavilion was expected to be ready for use in 2011 for summer

activities and be able to cater for upwards of 2,000 participants on a daily basis. This latest addition has a surface area of 1,850 square meters and a construction budget of €1,110,475. The company tasked with the construction is GUIFERSOL SA. In essence, the performance area inside the arena is slightly bigger than the tennis court area that it is replacing. The area is specifically designed to accommodate sports such as gymnastics, rhythmic aerobics, Tai Chi, Yoga, Pilates, Body-combat and ballroom dance plus a large gymnastics mat that covers an area of more than 300 square meters. Adjoining the main sports rooms is a physiotherapy clinic with six massage areas, an consultation office, waiting

room, toilets and storage, along with a service area for male and female costumes and an equipment store. The building has uniqueness in the design of the new Multipurpose Sports Pavilion, which has a novel metal and glass structure, taking up space on the defunct basketball court, linking the new building with the ‘Pavilion Cecilio Gallego’ as well as a modern vertical garden of 150 square surface meters. Deputy of the Costa Blanca Tourist Board, Eduardo Dolon said that Torrevieja was becoming a leader in the area of sports and it was fantastic to be able to offer residents, visitors and competing teams, not one but three different pavilions for sports, including the Palacio de los Deportes Infanta Cristina, "which also features an Olympic sized, heated pool.”

Matilde Sánchez Cervera, resigns as president of AFA

On Friday October 16th, at the headquarters of the Association of Relatives and Friends of Alzheimer (AFA) of Torrevieja an Extraordinary Assembly was held. In a simple statement, the president of AFA Torrevieja for the last eleven years (2004 - 2015), Matilde Sánchez Cervera announced her long anticipated retirement. The reasons she explained are very simple: she was primarily resigning because of her advanced years, as although she certainly may not look it, she is close to 80 years old plus her desire to care for her aunt, who lives with her, and is almost 96 years of age. Matilde has many achievements to her name during her tenure, chief among them obtaining the use of the building from where they carry out their day care program for Alzheimer sufferers. In addition, because she is bilingual and speaks perfect English, she has been able to promote the cause to many British groups, who come from all over the

region: San Miguel de Salinas, Catral, Ciudad Quesada, Orihuela Costa, etc. The result of her hard work has been recognised by many people, associations and clubs. Among the highlights are the "Diego Ramirez Pastor" award she received in 2013 and the "Pride of Spain" award from our newspaper, the CoastRider, which she was awarded twice (2010 and 2013). All of us at the Coastrider wish Matilde all the best for her retirement and thank her for all her hard work for such a great cause, over the past eleven years.

It's been another month of records at El Altet. Thanks to the continued good performance of the British market (483,000 passengers) in September, tourism has returned to have a positive effect on the airport of Alicante-Elche. In the first nine months of the year they gained 315,118 passengers, which no one doubts that by the end of December, the terminal will have seen more than 10.6 million passengers. Already they have exceeded last year's mark by half a million more than in September 2014, was again a record month with 1,097,645 passengers, an increase of 4.6% over the same month last year. The airport has recorded record highs every month of 2015 to date. The Alicante-Elche airport is located 9 kilometres southwest of the capital, in the town of Elche, in one of the most

dynamic areas with greater business and economic projection of the Mediterranean coast. The vital importance of tourism is reflected in the percentage of passengers on international flights, eighty percent of the total. The UK, Germany and the Netherlands are the countries that contribute more passengers. Also, the domestic scheduled traffic has been increasing in recent years. Madrid, Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca are the three most popular destinations. To adapt its facilities to traffic growth in March 2011, the new airport terminal was opened although the airport has another two that have remained closed since 2011. In 2014, the Alicante-Elche airport recorded traffic of 10,066,067 passengers, 71,571 operations and 2,637 tons of cargo.

Spanish News Investigation into death of 15 migrants on Ceuta beach dropped 10

A judge in Ceuta has dismissed the case against 16 Civil Guard officers in connection with the drowning death of 15 immigrants as they attempted to illegally reach Spanish soil on February 6, 2014. A captain, a lieutenant, a sergeant and other members of the Spanish law enforcement agency were under scrutiny over their use of rubber bullets to contain a group of several hundred migrants trying to reach European shores by swimming around a seawall at the Tarajal border crossing, located between the Spanish exclave city of Ceuta and Morocco. Fifteen individuals drowned in the mêlée, and Spanish authorities admitted that border police had fired rubber bullets “in the direction” of the migrants, but justified the decision based on the group’s “belligerent attitude.” The incident drew criticism from human rights groups and the European Commission demanded explanations from Spain. Five of the bodies were found in Spanish waters, while the other 10 were picked up in Moroccan jurisdiction. During the inquiry, examining magistrate María del Carmen Serván asked authorities in Rabat for their autopsies on three occasions, but received no reply. But now, the judge has decided to drop the case because the Civil Guard officers acted according to the law and because the circumstances at Tarajal beach “legitimized the use of riot equipment,” local daily El Faro de Ceuta reported. In her written decision, the judge states that officers were “forced to use it” in the exercise of

CoastRider CoastRider - Edition 569 - Edition - October 470 20th - March 2015 5thwww.coastridersl.com 2013

their border protection duties. “There is no evidence that could lead to the affirmation that the officers made inadequate use of the riot gear, particularly since there is no protocol regulating its use in a water-based environment,” writes the judge. Regarding the crowd of people who attempted to make the crossing that day, Judge Serván writes that “they accepted the risks of illegally entering Spanish territory by sea, swimming at night in a crowd of people, dressing in large amounts of clothes, and ignoring the deterrence actions by Moroccan and Civil Guard law enforcement.” This provisional writ considers that the officers, who were facing charges of homicide and negligence, cannot be held criminally liable for the events of that day. In February, a year after the migrant deaths, the Ceuta magistrate had attempted to pass the case over to the Spanish High Court in Madrid, but the latter sent it back to her courthouse.

Three arrests after Spanish-born baby allegedly sold to couple

Three people have been arrested in Cardiff after a baby was allegedly sold to a couple. Detectives said the Spanish-born boy's mother had originally claimed he had died during an emergency operation at a UK hospital. It has been reported that police in Spain believe the six-week-old may have been sold for up to £11,000. A South Wales Police spokesman said: "Three people have been arrested in connection with an investigation into concerns for a baby in Cardiff. "Two females aged 19 and 26 and a male aged 25 have all been released on police bail pending further enquiries. "The six-week-old baby boy is safe and well and remains in the care of the local authority." Spanish police alerted officers in Britain after suspicions were raised over the birth of the baby and the mother's claims he had died at the age of 15 days following an operation for an injury to a vein. Her son - born in the Virgen de la Concha hospital Zamora in northern Spain in September - was later found alive in Cardiff Bay. It is believed the child's mother is of Romanian origin while the other two arrested are understood to be a couple from Spain. DNA tests are now being carried out to determine who the child's father is. A Spanish police spokesman added the investigation remained open and they have not ruled out further arrests.

Police arrest man suspected of 15 years of sexually abusing minors A paedophile who had been active for more than 15 years has been arrested by the National Police in Alcoi, Alicante province. The suspect, a 50-year-old man, has been charged with 13 counts of sexual abuse, although authorities are aware of at least 20 separate cases. The victims were children aged seven through 14, whom the child abuser attracted via a number of means, including offering them candy, showing them his dog, passing himself off as a girl in online chatrooms or inviting them to his house to play video games. On the day of his arrest, the suspect had been planning to invite nearly 20 children to his upcoming birthday party. Sources familiar with the investigation said that the man entered into pseudo-contracts with his victims, copies of which were found inside his home. These documents, made to justify the abuse, set out each party’s conditions: he demanded sexual encounters, while the minors asked for video consoles and cell phones. In a press release issued on Friday, the police explained that the suspect changed his modus operandi throughout the years. In the 1990s, he located youths using amateur CB radio equipment, which was popular at the time. Once the internet became mainstream, he passed

himself off as a girl in online chatrooms and got young females to send him sexually explicit photographs and videos of themselves. He also made direct contact on the street, and got minors to come to his house after earning their trust via candy or his dog. The alleged paedophile also had an underage accomplice who helped him find new victims. When the minors came to his house, he showed them pornographic movies and suggested that they all get naked, then gradually asked them for more explicit acts, offering money for it. If the offer was rejected, the suspect threatened to tell their parents about what had happened. Investigators said he occasionally used violence to achieve his goals.

Spanish woman donates part of her liver to save baby grandson’s life

On June 24, a nine-month-old baby from Almería received a lobe from her grandmother’s liver, in what constitutes the first such case on record in Spain since 2005. It was the last chance of survival for Juan José, who was suffering from a liver disease that meant he had no more than six months left to live. This is the second time that a grandmother has donated an organ to her grandchild in Spain, after a similar case in Barcelona in 2005. There have also been cases of grandfathers becoming donors for their children’s offspring, according to the National Transplant Association.

According to Catalan health authorities, the 2005 transplant was “exactly the same as the one made public at a Córdoba hospital.” Back then, doctors at Vall d’Hebron hospital took a lobe from the liver of a 43-yearold woman and inserted it into her three-year-old grandchild, said the Catalan Transplant Association (OCATT). In the most recent case, the grandmother was also young, 55, which made the operation easier. The usual procedure in these cases is to seek a child donor because the smaller organs are better suited to the recipient and more likely to last his or her entire lifetime. But in this case, there was no

time to wait for a child donor to die, explained doctors at Reina Sofía Hospital in Córdoba, where the surgery took place. So Francisca Fuentes decided to donate 20 percent of her own liver. “It’s the most beautiful thing I could have done: to give my grandson life so he could stop suffering, because his own life was slowly ebbing away,” she said after the operation. “Now, joy has returned to our house. You can see the

happiness in the child’s face, the life in him. It’s very satisfying. If I had to do it again, I would,” said Fuentes, who was able to go home four days after the surgery. The baby remained in hospital care for two weeks. Living donor transplants are only feasible in two cases: kidney (the donor gives away one) and liver (the recipient receives part of the organ). In 2014 there were 1,068 liver transplants in Spain, of which 51 involved recipients under 16

years of age and 21 were from living donors. Spain is the world leader in organ transplants. The National Transplant Organization (ONT) reported that in 2014 Spain once again broke its own record after carrying out a total 4,360 transplants. Figures show that there was a donation rate of 36 donors per one million inhabitants last year – higher than France, where there were 26 donors per million, and Britain, where there were 21.

81 arrested in child pornography raid According to Spanish police, at least 81 men were arrested across the country on Saturday in one of the country's largest raids on child pornography in years. Police said that two minors and two mentally disabled were also arrested. The men are suspected of exchanging pornographic content of children, including photographs and videos. More than 300 police were used in the countrywide raid across 28 provinces. Police also seized computers and cameras at the suspects' residences. The investigation was led by "cyber-patrols"

who uncovered dozens of people online exchanging the illicit material, at times using peerto-peer networks. "The agents are continuing to analyse the material seized to determine if there had been crimes of producing child pornography, sexual abuse of minors or connection with paedophiles," Spanish police said in a statement. Police added that "some of the images seized by police are extremely harsh and show sadism and bestiality." In 2008, Spanish police detained more than 120 people in a single operation against child pornography.

History of Daylight Saving Time in Europe In Spain, we are all going to gain an hour's sleep on Saturday night, going into Sunday morning, so better prepare yourself now. Although your digital mobile phones, tablets and computers may all update themselves automatically, any analogue clocks or those not wired to the digital world, while have to be reset by hand. So, before you go to bed, wind the clock forward an hour and you'll be all set until the spring. Forget to do so, and if you have plans, you may find yourself waiting alone and feeling silly for an hour. According to www.timeanddate.com, Daylight Saving Time (DST) was first used in Germany in 1916. Several European countries started using DST, aka Daylight Savings Time during World War I, which lasted from July 1914 until November 1918. This supposedly was to give farmers an extra hour of daylight early morning to achieve their tasks. Austria and Germany stopped using DST in 1919 or 1920, while the United Kingdom, Ireland and cities in France kept on setting their clocks back and forth. During World War II, Hitler’s commanders imposed

German time as they moved through Europe but it did not always work. Denmark was one of the countries that adopted DST during the war and planned to end it in mid-August in 1940. The French resisted DST at the start of the war but they failed to resist the German army, which meant that they were officially on “Hitler time” by 1941. There were some French patriots who stuck to the old French time, two hours behind the Berlin-based DST. DST was also implemented in the aftermath of World War II, mainly to help people conserve fuel for national recovery and rebuilding programs. Berlin, in Germany, was divided into four occupation zones after the war and until 1948, the French, British, American and Soviet occupiers imposed DST on residents in the city. However, many European countries later abandoned daylight saving time, as DST became a reminder of the war itself and the humiliation of foreign occupation. Both the Italians and the French repealed DST after clearing up the debris of German occupation. In fact, the French refused to adopt DST until the worldwide oil shortage during the 1970s. Daylight saving time was instituted in France in 1975 following the oil shock of 1974 with the aim to make savings by reducing lighting needs. This is mainly to better match the operating hours with daylight hours to limit the use of artificial lighting. By the early 1980s, many countries of the European Union were using daylight saving time, but they had different practices, thus impeding transport schedules and communications within the continent. In 1996 the European Union (EU) standardized an EU-wide daylight saving time for consistency to apply across the EU. Most European countries that are EU-affiliated follow the EU rules or directives. The EU daylight saving schedule runs from the last Sunday of March through the last Sunday of October. In 2000, an EU directive was issued on daylight saving arrangements. In the directive, it was

mentioned that summer-time arrangements maintained for the past 20 years would be renewed for an unspecified period. It also noted that the last Sundays of March and October were to be the dates definitively adopted for the daylight saving schedule among EU countries. Most countries in Europe now follow a synchronized daylight saving time that lasts from the last Sunday of March until the last Sunday of October each year. Please note: any mention of summer and winter in this article refers to the seasons in the northern hemisphere. Both the Coastrider and timeanddate.com wish to thank sources such as M. Downing, author of Spring Forward: The Annual Madness of Daylight Saving Time, and D. Howse, author of Greenwich Time and the Longitude, for some of this information.

After Hours at NEW TAVERN, SAN MIGUEL

Tell us about yourselves My name is Ian and I own and manage the New Tavern. We are a bar/restaurant in the centre of San Miguel. I have been here 4 years and previously spent 6 years doing a variety of jobs here in Spain. What made you open a bar? I was working here along with my wife and daughter and one day the previous owner just decided to up and leave with virtually no word to anyone. We took it over initially on a temporary basis to keep it going. Shortly afterwards the opportunity came along to buy it and so we did. Originally we ran it as a family but these days it is just me. Fortunately however I have excellent staff around me. Where did the inspiration for the name come from? Before coming here I worked at another bar called ‘The Tavern.’ I liked the

name so this became ‘The New Tavern.’ Who does the cooking? And how would you describe your style? My chef is Donna. She cooks mainly traditional English food as most of our customers are from the UK. Fortunately our Spanish regulars have developed a

taste for it as well. We have weekly steak nights with ‘meal-deal’ offers, for which we normally put on live entertainment. A very popular feature is the courtesy minibus service I provide where I pick up and drop off people from anywhere within a 15-kilometre radius. It means a lot to customers to be able to enjoy a drink with their meal and not have to worry about driving home afterwards. What’s your favourite dish on the menu? I love Donna’s Sunday carvery. You have a choice from 4 meats and 7 vegetables. All this plus a drink for only €7.50 by the way. The courtesy bus service is in operation for this as well. Favourite day of the week? I have to say Sunday as I get a chance to enjoy the carvery, which is normally from 1.00 until 4.00. It is also the only day that we normally close early so I can look

forward to a breather. Any interesting tales? We have a team here that competes in the local pool league. We had an away fixture against another bar and off they went in the minibus to play them. About 20 minutes after they left I received a frantic phone call to say that they had been stopped by the Guardia, who were obviously on high alert, forced off the bus and searched at gunpoint. They were allowed to continue once it was apparent that they weren’t the ones they were looking for. Very traumatic for them at the time of course but so funny looking back. We still joke about how the opposition must have been really desperate to beat us if they had to resort to such extreme measures! Ten natural ways that will help you lift your mood Feeling down in the dumps? We've found 10 proven ways to help you feel happier – and some of them may surprise you... 1. Give mindfulness a try Mindfulness can mean different things to different people, and may be practised in a number of ways. But put simply, it means paying attention to the present moment without getting stuck in the past or worrying about the future. It may sound easier said than done – but once you've mastered the art, it will come as second nature. One recent study, published in The Lancet, suggested mindfulness-based cognitive therapy could be as effective as medication in treating depression. 2. Get out in the garden Doctors are now being encouraged to 'prescribe' gardening projects to help people boost their physical and mental health. A spot of pruning or weeding can help lower blood pressure and combat symptoms of stress and depression, says research from Growing Health. Need another excuse to get the mower out? A chemical released by a freshly mown lawn makes people feel more happy and relaxed, according to an Australian study. 3. Go for a walk in the park Just five minutes of gentle exercise in a green space, such as your local park, is enough to significantly lift your mood, according to research published in the Environmental Science and Technology journal. The effect was particularly strong in people with mental health problems, such as depression. 4. Listen to some 'happy music' Listening to an upbeat song really can boost your mood, says a study from the University of Missouri. The caveat? You have to be actively trying to cheer yourself up, as opposed to just hearing a happy tune playing in the background. 5. Come dancing Any kind of physical exercise releases feel-good chemicals called endorphins. And dancing is a great

form of exercise. Still, you knew that already, didn't you? What you may not know, however, is that the tango in particular appears to offer asignificant mood-lifting effect. Just one month of tango lessons was enough to help alleviate symptoms in 41 people with mood disorders, according to a recent Australian study. 6. Have salmon for dinner Omega-3 fatty acids, found in oily fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines, are vital for healthy brain function. In fact, people who eat a fish-rich Mediterranean diet are significantly happier and suffer less stress, according to a recent study at the University of South Australia. Don't fancy fish? Walnuts are a good source of omega-3s, too. 7. Give yoga a go Yoga is a great way to relax the mind and body. And no, you don't have to be super-fit and bendy to feel the benefits. Need more persuading? Three sessions of yoga each week can boosts levels of a brain chemical - the amino acid BAGA - which helps promote a state of calm, say researchers at the Boston University School of Medicine. 8. Join a choir Singing in the shower could be enough to lift your mood – but it pays to go one step further and join a choir. That's according to a recent study from Oxford Brookes University, which looked at 375 people who either sang alone, sang in choirs or played team sports. All three activities were found to be significant moodboosters - but the choristers enjoyed the greatest benefits. It's thought the choir's sense of social cohesion

Get fuller hair today

Thinning hair? Find out which styles will boost your thickness, foods you should eat and how to take care of your hair to keep it healthy and strong.

While there are some aspects of getting older that get better than when you were young – fewer emotional ups and downs, clearer priorities, no more acne! – Hair is one of the things that definitely doesn’t improve. Most women experience thinning hair and this is largely down to the simple fact of ageing – your body is producing fewer hairs then before (the bonus: this also means less armpit and leg hair!) and the hair itself becomes finer. Here are six ways to maximise what you have. Colour your hair to boost thickness It doesn’t just cover those greys, hair dye also increases the thickness of each hair strand as the colour swells the hair cuticle. Avoid going too dark which may contrast dramatically with your exposed scalp making it even more visible. Instead, opt for a shade or two lighter than your natural one so that your visible scalp patches become less obvious. Gloss it up When your hair is thinning, it’s tempting to avoid conditioners or glossing products for fear of weighing it down and making it look even thinner. However, if you look at other women, you’ll notice that thin hair looks far more attractive when it’s shiny and glossy than thin hair that’s dull and fluffy.

may account for this. 9. Phone a friend Connecting with other people is a proven moodbooster, partly because it stops you focusing inwardly on your problems. But rather than email or use social media, it's preferable to chat with a friend or relative over the phone – or even better, face to face. A word of warning, though: some research suggests that using social media may actually increase feelings of loneliness and low mood. A University of Michigan study involving 82 people found that the more they used Facebook, the less happy they felt over time. 10. Smile! It's very simple – but it might just work. When you smile, you can trick your mind into believing you're happy and positive, even when you're initially feeling low. The reason? The act of smiling triggers moodboosting chemicals in the brain. Go on - give it a try! Opt for lightweight shining mousse or mist, keep hair short so the products you use don’t pull hair down, or use curlers to smooth out the hair cuticle and give your hair some fullness with shine. Cut it Some haircuts are better than others at creating an illusion of fullness. Ask for layers around your face to create a sense of fullness, while leaving the back full (fewer or no layers) to give your hair some body there. Choose your shampoo It really is worth buying a different shampoo than you’re used to. That’s because a lot of shampoos contain sulphates, which are harsh on hair making it more prone to damage. As your scalp, just like your skin, doesn’t produce the same amount of oils as it used to, you no longer need these harsh de-greasing chemicals. Stem the breakage If your hair breaks easily, that will exacerbate the thinning effect, so look after your hair to prevent this. While products can help, you also need to treat the breakage from within. Eat strawberries or kiwis to up your vitamin C intake. The C Vit is used by your body to create the protein for your hair and nails, so without it, your hair will suffer. Up your iron intake Ask a doctor about significant hair loss and it’s likely they’ll suggest iron deficiency as a potential cause. That’s because if you’re not getting enough iron in your diet you’ll start to lose hair by the handful. Red meat is a good source of iron but many of us don’t eat red meat that often, so ensure you get your 8mg per day (recommended for women 50 and older) via beans or a supplement. If that doesn’t work or you know your iron levels are fine, see your GP to check your thyroids which can also trigger hair loss if they’re not functioning correctly.

How to Care for Sensitive Teeth Many of us say we have “sensitive teeth.” We usually mean that we feel twinges of pain or discomfort in our teeth in certain situations. These may include: • Drinking or eating cold things • Drinking or eating hot things • Eating sweets • Touching the teeth with other teeth or the tongue • Breathing cold air Over half of us experience the twinge of sensitive teeth at some point in our lives — 30 percent of us suffer daily — and it’s a problem that seems to be on the rise. One of the most common dental complaints, it tends to peak in the 30-50 age group. Women are consistently shown to suffer more, although no one knows why. Causes: One culprit is receding gums — they expose the sensitive dentine roots of the teeth not covered by protective enamel. Receding gums become more common with age, but they’re also caused by overbrushing, which wears them away, or under-brushing and not flossing, which can lead to disease and shrinkage. Certain foods and drinks can contribute, too. Anything acidic will slightly dissolve the enamel. That means sugary foods and drinks; anything frizzy, including carbonated water; and fruit and fruit juice — particularly rhubarb and grapefruit. Wines, vinegars, pickles and lemon juice can have the same effect. Other causes can include gastric reflux, where acid comes up to the mouth from the stomach. People with eating disorder like bulimia often have sensitive teeth, thanks to acid erosion from vomiting. Excessive teething grinding can wear enamel away, and tooth-whitening procedures can cause temporary sensitivity. What You Can Do: A few tweaks to your dental regime and diet really could help: Avoid hard-bristled brushes. It’s a good idea to avoid hard-bristled brushes and aggressive scrubbing. Choose

a medium bristle or, better still, an electric toothbrush. It’s almost impossible to over-brush with one, and you’ll keep gums cleaner, so disease is less likely. Oral B Triumph 9900 Toothbrush with Smart Guide comes with a wireless display that includes a warning signal if you are brushing your teeth too hard. If the device registers you are brushing too hard, a red light will appear on the monitor which signals you to lighten up on the pressure. Another feature on this wireless device is a circle which is divided into the quarters of your mouth, showing you which areas you have already brushed. This helps to prevent over-brushing of one area of your mouth. Bring on the desensitizing toothpaste. It’s also worth trying products specifically designed for the issue. There are two formulations of toothpastes that treat sensitive teeth: strontium chloride and potassium nitrate. Sensodyne was the original toothpaste for treating sensitive teeth; its active ingredient was strontium chloride. When your roots are exposed, you may have open pores in your tooth dentin that lead straight to the pulp of your tooth. Merely touching this surface can provoke pain. Cold or air can also cause pain. Strontium chloride, the ingredient in the original Sensodyne formula, plugs these pores or tubules. Later on, a potassium nitrate toothpaste formula was introduced, which is also very effective in treating tooth

sensitivity. It appears that the potassium works by calming the nerve of the tooth, which prevents the transmitting of painful stimuli. Denquel was introduced as a competing brand, with the alternate potassium nitrate formula. After that, Sensodyne introduced a potassium nitrate formula version. Now there are several brands available with both of these formulas, and they all appear to work well. It’s a case of finding one that works for your particular pattern of sensitivity. If you try one formula and it doesn't work, it may help to try the other formula. For best results, put the toothpaste onto a dry brush, so it’s not diluted, and spit — but don’t rinse — after you’ve finished. Floss daily. Do not avoid flossing your teeth; it’s an important part of proper dental hygiene. You should do it at least once a day after brushing your teeth. Avoid sugary, fizzy and diet drinks. While it’s probably best to avoid sugary, fizzy and diet drinks, don’t abstain from fruit, juice or other healthy but acidic foods — just don’t brush within 20 minutes (and ideally an hour) of consuming them. Salvia helps neutralize the acid on your teeth and if you brush straightaway, you’ll interfere with this process, as well as rinsing away any temporarily softened enamel. So brush your teeth before breakfast, not after. Drink everything through a straw. Start protecting your smile today by drinking everything through a straw. Position the straw towards the back of your mouth. This will limit the amount of time the beverage is in contact with your teeth. Up your intake of coenzyme Q10. There is some evidence has linking gum disease to lower levels of coenzyme Q10, an antioxidant made naturally in the body, found widely in foods, and available in supplement form. Wear a mouth guard. If you grind your teeth in your sleep, then you should ask your dentist about getting a mouth guard to wear in your sleep. This will help prevent grinding your teeth which can lead to sensitivity. See your dentist. If the pain is very high in intensity and prolonged, see your dentist.

Drink Tomato Juice for Healthy Bones Milk’s not the only drink that builds healthy bones. According to new research published in the journal Osteoporosis International, drinking tomato juice reduces the risk of osteoporosis too. Is sipping tomato juice twice a day the key to healthy bones? Tomatoes and tomato juice are a rich source of natural plant compounds called lycopenes. This member of the carotenoid family of phytonutrients has already been recognized for its health benefits. Lycopenes in tomatoes may lower the risk of heart disease, and some studies show they prevent prostate cancer — although recent studies have called this into question. Nevertheless, lycopenes are a good source of cell-protective antioxidants — and tomato juice is one of the best sources of lycopene

around. The Power of Lycopenes in Tomatoes When researchers gave sixty post-menopausal women tomato juice, a lycopene supplement, a combination of the two, or a placebo for four months, they made some interesting observations. The women who received the lycopene supplement, the tomato juice, or a combination

of the two had significant increases in the amount of lycopene in their blood. This isn’t surprising since the women were drinking tomato juice or taking a lycopene supplement. What’s more interesting is the women who drank tomato juice or took the lycopene in supplement form had lower markers for bone breakdown in their blood as well as greater antioxidant capacity. These factors are both important for healthy bones and for reducing the risk of osteoporosis. Prior to giving them lycopene supplements or tomato juice, the women were asked to avoid eating any tomato products for thirty days. During this time, they found a chemical in their blood stream that serves as a

marker for bone breakdown — more evidence that lycopene is important for healthy bones. Lycopenes in Tomatoes: How Much Do You Need for Healthy Bones? According to this study, drinking two glasses of tomato juice a day can improve bone health and reduce the risk of osteoporosis. What about eating raw tomatoes? This wouldn’t necessarily have the same benefit. Lycopene are most readily absorbed when they’re

processed, so tomato juice, tomato sauce and ketchup are better sources than raw tomatoes. Drink Tomato Juice for Healthy Bones: The Bottom Line? Don’t give up milk. It has the calcium the body needs to build stronger bones, but add more lycopenes to your diet by drinking tomato juice too. Give your bones the nutrients they need to keep you standing tall for a lifetime.

Britons buying a fifth of all Spanish property sold to foreigners Britons are buying a fifth of all Spanish property sold to foreigners, as moribund prices and a strong pound make holiday homes in the sun more appealing. According to new figures released by the Spanish land registry, Britons, more than any other nationality, are taking advantage of a combination of favourable economic factors. The euro has fallen from about 80p to the pound, to a little over 70p in 12 months, making homes in popular areas such as the Costa del Sol and the Costa Blanca cheaper to buy. Slow price growth in Spain, coupled with rapidly rising property prices at home – in some instances, by more than 10 per cent a year – mean that Spanish property is making less of a dent in Britons’ wallets. According to the Colegio de Registradores, 19.8 per cent of all property bought by non-Spaniards in the first six months of 2015 went to UK buyers. German and other northern Europeans are stymied by the weak euro, while buyers from further afield – Russians have bought large numbers of Spanish holiday homes in recent years – have been hit by sanctions or weakening domestic economies. As many as 750,000 Britons live in Spain for at least part of the year. “The British market is by far the most important,” said Marc Pritchard, the Majorca-based sales and marketing director of Taylor Wimpey España, which develops homes in popular coastal areas. “There are

several factors at play, but people are starting to realise that after years of the Spanish housing market being depressed, it is beginning to pick up.” Spain suffered one of the sharpest economic downturns in the Eurozone crisis, sending property prices spiralling. Many had ploughed retirement savings into a dream home in the sun, but suddenly found themselves heavily indebted and holding an asset that was worth a fraction of what they paid for it.

But greater confidence of economic stability at home is allowing people, especially those with plenty of cash, to look abroad for what are still bargain prices. “Prices, while rising, are still low,” said Mr Pritchard. “Even in prime locations, properties are still at 2002 levels.” The most popular destinations are the sun-kissed coastal areas, with some communities in Alicante and Marbella dominated by English-speaking residents. The house-moving website, Rightmove, says it is the grey pound that is driving the market. Britons aged between 55 and 64 are the most active in Spain, making up almost half of all enquiries about holiday homes. Those aged between 45 and 54 make a third of all requests. Housers, a Spanish-based crowdfunded investment group, is hoping to raise about £90m to invest in 500 properties, most of them in Madrid, with a view to renting them out. House prices in the Spanish capital have risen by more than 5 per cent this year. The move is likely to anger social groups who argue that banks have been too quick to foreclose on households who have fallen behind on mortgage repayments. Housers’ first investment, a flat in Madrid, was bought by 49 investors, who each share the €450 (£333) a month rent, and any capital appreciation.

James May takes on new car challenge He may have left Top Gear, but James May is back on TV screens next week in two live specials showing how cars are made. May is joined by Kate Humble and car designer Ant Anstead for BBC Two's Building Cars Live programme, which will broadcast from BMW's Mini plant in Oxford. The massive factory - which has its own fire and ambulance station and rail terminal - produces a car every 67 seconds. "It's difficult to think of a subject that lends itself better to live TV," says May. "We're not going to be driving around in cars very much - mainly we're looking at stuff being conceived and being put together." He says that, unlike the pre-recorded Top Gear, the pace of this car show will be dictated by the "beat" of the car factory. "If I talk for a minute on the assembly line, in that time a whole car will have gone through." What if the production line grinds to a halt during the live show? May says such events are rare, but he adds: "If that happens, that is part of the reality of live TV - we'd have to film it and watch them sort it out. "They always do sort it out one way or another. In some ways - but I wouldn't wish it on them - that would be an exciting bit of the programme because you would see this massive, complicated machine deal with a crisis." Building Cars Live comes just days after May started filming an Amazon Prime motoring show for 2016 with former Top Gear colleagues Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond.

The trio left the hit BBC Two show earlier this year after Clarkson's contract was not renewed following a "fracas" with a Top Gear producer. Round-the-clock robots Viewers of the BBC Two live show will follow the journey of a car from being welded by robots in the body shop to when it is driven off at the end of the production line. In the body shop - a building the size of 16 football pitches - hundreds of robots work almost round the clock. One section is nicknamed Jurassic Park because "one of the robots looks like a dinosaur running up and down", explains one Mini employee. About 30 human technicians keep the robots functioning smoothly, riding on scooters so they can move quickly around the vast space. Next up is the assembly hall, where the cars are painted and fitted with doors, seats, wheels and engines

by teams of skilled workers. Mini factory facts • The first Mini rolled off the production line at the Oxford plant on 8 May 1959 • Output reached its peak in 196667, when 94,889 cars were made • There are more than 4,000 people currently employed at Plant Oxford • Each Mini is made up of 4,000 different parts • More than 1,000 robots are used on the production line • Pepper white is the favourite car colour Each car is marked with a barcode so the robots can build the vehicle to the exact specification requested by the new owner. It's unlikely that any two cars on the production line are the same. "When you say, 'Production line,' you do think of boiled sweets," says co-presenter Kate Humble. "But these aren't sherbet lemons. Every single one is different to the one behind it and as bespoke as the person who's ordered it." She says the whole point is to show what happens in real time. "People will get a sense it is happening now. Yes, you could package it up and make a glossy documentary about it - but it wouldn't be as exciting." "It's a show about manufacturing and design and human desire," adds May. "The car is one of the most desirable things humanity has every produced." Building Cars Live is on BBC Two tonight 20 and tomorrow 21 October at 20:30

Full Monte's new President Eddie Cagigao by Andrew Atkinson CD Montesinos FC supporters club the 'Full Monte' New President Eddie Cagigao, and striker Wallace, exclusively talked to Andrew Atkinson last week. Los Montesinos based football club CD Montesinos have aspiring ambitions, hopefully with the backing of the local council, as the Alicante based outfit enter a new era. “With the newly appointed manager Roberto in place, the club is currently on a high. There's a new buzz in the town. We thank everybody that has helped the club and hopefully that will continue in the future. From the 'Full Monte' point of view we will continue to help,” said Eddie. The Regional 2 league club attracted nearly 300 supporters for the home

fixture last weekend in a 2.1 win against RP Orihuela A. “We are one of the best supported clubs in the lower leagues in Spain,” said Howard Yeats, a stalwart of the 'Full Monte' supporters club. CD Montesinos have also appointed a newly elected club President in Philippe and with his leadership they have ambitions to erect a new stand. Mayor Jose Manuel Butron attended an open day at the club when supporters were introduced to the club's first team squad and youth teams. Hopefully the Mayor will help with the club's ambitions in future years. Eddie is in his second spell as the supporters President, having replaced Fred Griggs, who died during the summer. “Fred Griggs was a big man in football, a true campaigner for the game. Now it is my aim as his successor to increase the fan base and forge new links with the football club. The new committee are eager to do this. They are very keen to include us more into the fabric of the club. We are here to help in any way we can. It has been agreed to look into creating more sitting area on the left side of the ground,

with perhaps metal stands being erected in sections.” added Eddie. CD Montesinos FC have got off to a great start to the new campaign with three victories from their opening four fixtures. And striker Wallace is hoping to

help the club win promotion this season. “We want to win every game and win promotion.” said Wallace, who is one of the strikers to fill the gap of the club's former prolific goal scorer Vazquinho who joined Sporting Saladar in the summer. “Hopefully new coach Roberto Cases will do well. All the players are behind Roberto and his staff,” said Wallace, who supports Liverpool and Atletico Madrid, and celebrated his 22nd birthday on October 14th. With Los Montesinos town celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, hopefully CD Montesinos will continue those celebrations into 2016 with promotion. “There is a real buzz within the club. Hopefully we will have a successful season,” said Eddie Cagigao. If you are interested in joining the Full Monte, the CD Montesinos supporters club, please email: ecagigao@hotmail.com.

Needless to say many balls were lost and found in the damned pampas grass. The course was in good condition with the greens being very firm and quick particularly from down-hill lies. It was a bit nippy when the game got underway but as the day progressed the sun broke through and it became excellent golfing weather. 25 players competed in 2 divisions for places on the podium. In the Gold Division the two lowest handicappers played well. The winner was the genial Irishman David McSweeney, who has just returned from the Emerald Isle after a wet summer and most certainly enjoyed the conditions to return a score of 34 points. In second place was Yorkshire-man Alan Slack, who is over from the UK for a short break and played some great golf and came in with a score of 32 stableford points. There was a big gap between the top two and third place which went to Welshman Mike Thomas who beat a couple of others on C/B with 24 points. In the Silver Division the ladies had their day on a course which was very favourable to the ladies given the

distance between the Yellow and the Red Tees. Jack Nicklaus must have felt a bit sorry for the “lady” golfers when deciding where to position the Red Tee boxes on the course. Anyway the ladies certainly took advantage of this and played very well, particularly on the back nine. In first place on 30 points on C/B was Ann Hobbs who just pipped playing partner Sheila McSweeney on C/B. In third place on 27 points on C/B was Glenys Thomas from Janet Candelin. The best guest was exmember Colin Lloyd, who was a top golfer in his heyday, who played his last game of golf in Spain before returning to the U.K. Permanently. All the best Colin. The “Nearest the Pin” winners were, Tony Patterson, Bert Morl, Brian Airey and David McSweeney (2). David also took the 2´s pot. It was a good day for the McSweeneys who went home with a few bottles of wine & spirits and some dineros. The football scratch card was won by Scots lassie Angela Carroll. The next game is an individual Stableford competition and the 3rd round of the “Eclectic” competition at the course on our doorstep La Marquesa on Wednesday 28th October. Anyone in the Quesada area looking to join a very friendly golf society and play golf once a fortnight at a wide variety of courses at very reasonable cost, should contact the Membership Secretary Les Pancott on 966 716 723.

Torry take a point

CD Torrevieja tied with a goal apiece on the road at Elche Ilicitano Torrevieja came close to taking all three points but just couldn't find the back of the net. On paper and looking at their form up until now, 14th placed Torry should never have been able to compete with 3rd placed Elche, who started the season as one of the favourites for promotion and have huge strength in depth within the club. However, much as nobody expected Newcastle United to score six goals on Sunday, Torry seem to be picking up the pieces and clearly outplayed a more qualified opponent in their own stadium and in all facets of the game with the exception, of course, of the number of goals. Importantly, this was the only aspect that Torry missed to round off a splendid afternoon of football for Torry. And that was even though they started with a disadvantage with, as has been the norm this season, by letting in an early goal it inspired the team since they had to play against this rapid disadvantage from the start. But after their early goal in the tenth minute when Nuha headed home from a

corner kick, that was almost all that Elche would bring to their attacking game, because they would not have a significant shot on target during the game. Meanwhile, the tactics of Pedroza, with three defenders was very effective as they continued working without being overcome by anxiety and gradually managed to impose superiority in the midfield. The first chance came when Carrasco sent Brani away but he volleyed over. Six minutes later, Caesar had the chance to equalise but couldn't beat the goalkeeper. Torry equalised in the 24th minute when César took the ball after a long

clearance from Matej that went past Fran, and while the goalkeeper showed indecision in not leaving his area, he adjusted with his low shot going in off the left post. Torrevieja then had a host of opportunities with the best being another great individual move from Brani, who picked the ball up on the right wing, left several defenders in his wake and forced a great save from the goalkeeper. On 33 minutes, the referee needed to be attended by the two physiotherapists, because of a strong blow from a ball in the chest. The flood did not stop in the second half. A corner from Juanma went through to Carrasco at the back post who passed to the unmarked Quintero who moved forward with the ball but ran out of angle

to sneak a shot as the goal was well covered by the goalkeeper. Another corner from Sanchez went just wide from Caesar. Juanma centred from sideline and his cross was dangerously deflected by Fran, and the ball went just wide of the far post with no attacker there to touch it into the net. Of the five games played so far by the Elche Ilicitano in their stadium, this is the first that they didn't win. The Torry team was well aware of the opportunities missed but the game offered up an excellent impression of the newer look to the team which will also be boosted by the team's recent signings. Elche Club de Fútbol Ilicitano: Juanma, Dani Ruiz, Liberto, Fran, Primi, Javi Llor, Paul (Juanra 81’), Iván Aguado, Nuha, Ismael (Kilian 73’) y Rubio (Álex López 45’). No used: Dani and Rubén. Manager: Vicente Parras Campello. Club Deportivo Torrevieja: Óscar, Vicente Boix, Luis Carlos (Adrián Banderas 83’), Jorge, Quintero, Matej, Sánchez, Carrasco (Burguillos 81’), César (Lewis 85’), Juanma and Brani. Not used: Miguel Serna and Rafa Gómez. Coach: Antonio Pedreño Saura. Note the early kick off time on Sunday, when at noon, the biggest team in the league, Castellón visit the Vicente Garcia stadium.

Swansea City boss Garry Monk has dismissed any attempts by new Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to sign his striker Andre Ayew, 25, as pure fantasy. Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier says striker Sadio Mane, 23, leaves him on the edge of his seat when he watches his former club. Jan Vertonghen has praised team-mate and compatriot Mousa Dembele, 28, as "one of the best midfielders in the Premier League". Former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez offered Southampton £1m plus midfielder Darren Potter for Gareth Bale in 2006. But back to good sports and Manchester United legends Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs have reportedly told squatters who set up camp inside a landmark building they plan to turn into a plush hotel they can stay through the winter to help rough sleepers. Over in Spain, former Everton and Manchester United manager David Moyes, currently at Real Sociedad, apparently said it would find it hard to turn down an approach from Aston Villa or so said the Daily Star Sunday while Villa boss Tim Sherwood says Chelsea were "fluky" in their 2-0 victory over his side at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. The Liverpool Sunday Echo paid tribute to Everton great Howard Kendall, who died on Saturday. Howard Kendall

Crystal Palace striker Dwight Gayle apologised to his team-mates and the club's fans after being sent off in his side's 3-1 Premier League loss to West Ham. And in our believe it or not section, surely the majority of footballers aren't overweight these days? Well, according to NHS guidelines, 26 Premier League players could do with losing weight to improve their BMI. Norwich's Martin Olsson is top of this particular 26-man table, which also includes John Terry, Yaya Toure and Memphis Depay. And in the not so sporting news, a non-league match Martin Olsson

Up in Germany, Bayern Munich are targeting former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti as they fear will lose Pep Guardiola to Manchester City while new Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says he wanted to sign striker Divock Origi during his time as Borussia Dortmund coach but the 20-year-old chose the Reds instead. Manchester United's Spain midfielder Juan Mata, 27, has had an apparent dig at Mourinho, his former boss at Chelsea, claiming: "If a luxury player is a player who scores and assists and has good stats, then I'm happy to be a luxury player." United and England defender Luke Shaw, 20, is rated 50-50 by his club manager Louis van Gaal to play at Euro 2016 as he recovers from a broken leg and across town Manchester City are hoping to re-sign Spanish youngster Jose Angel Pozo and add Sevilla's 17year-old centre-back Jose Maria Amo in January. Pozo, 19, was sold to Almeria this summer but City have a buy-back option. Newcastle manager Steve McClaren says it will take three "transfer windows" for the club to start to be successful under his stewardship while West Brom manager Tony Pulis said his midfielder James McClean, 26, was "not the sharpest tool in the box" after becoming involved in a post-match melee against former club Sunderland. And as if we could really care, it looks as if Romeo Beckham, 13, is expected to follow older brother Brooklyn in leaving Arsenal's Academy noted the Mail on Sunday.
