English Language cinema in Torrevieja For more than a year a team of film enthusiasts have been slowly working behind the scenes to move forward and organise an English language film Club in Torrevieja. All that hard work is about to come to fruition as from November 6th onwards, as long as the demand is there, each week Cines IMF in Torrevieja will screen a different film new film every week, for the entire week.

This will be a V.O, film, the original version, shown in English with Spanish subtitles. Anyone can now go to the movies in Torrevieja to watch a film in English and you don't even have to be a member of the club. Anyone can visit Cines IMF to see an English language film and you just pay the admission price at the entrance

window, but there are advantages of being a member.

One could hardly ask for a better film to show as the first English Language screening to start off the program, or as a way to announce the film club, as on Friday November 6th, Daniel Craig will return as 007, in SPECTRE. The Premier and opening night in Spain is November 6th and it's being shown in English in Torrevieja, with the screening times still to be announced.

And in December, CINES IMF will bring you Star Wars 7.

'ADMIT ONE' CINEMA CLUB: www.AdmitOne.club Thanks to the club's close relationship with Fabian and Cines IMF, they want to invite you, your friends and family to join the film club. 2016 also is the anniversary of such classics as Batman (1966), the wham, pow, bang, version, with Burt Ward and Adam West, with a new 2016 animated version featuring their voices, to screen next year. It's the 30th anniversary of Ferris Bueller's Day Off, with special screenings in London, so we'll try and do the same thing in Torrevieja.

TCM Classic movies are also having a special film festival in Hollywood next April and will try and tie something up with them.

Themes at past incarnations of the fest have included "The History of Hollywood," "Music in the Movies," "Style in the Movies" and, last year, "History in the Movies."

The fest also has a rich tradition of celebrating milestone anniversaries of classic movies, with their stars in attendance. At its

SOCIAL EVENTS Admit One hope to arrange social events during the year. This could range from a simple lunch, to a black tie dinner for the Oscars to an Old Skool Disco, or maybe a visit to another film festival for a long weekend. That will all depend on what members want.

SIGNING UP AS A MEMBER Next week, the club will announce where and when one can sign up to become a member of the film club.

This will be followed by a few afternoons, or evenings at different pubs and clubs or attending club and association meetings, when invited to do so.

Torrevieja Royal Naval Association's 25 years MASA Hotel welcomed more than 80 members and invited guests to the 25th anniversary celebrations of the Torrevieja Branch of the Royal Naval Association on Wednesday evening. The event was their traditional Trafalgar Day dinner, which commemorates the victory of Admiral Lord Nelson over the French fleet, 210 years ago. Torrevieja's Mayor Jose Manuel Dolon was on hard to wish the association all the best for their future while the Councillor for NGOs Carmen Morate and the AMICS Foreign Residents Manager Carlos Gonzales were among the guests of honour at the main table. Jean Paul Mulero, the former Director of the Foreign Residents Association was also present.

The branch have almost 100 full time members and meet on the 1st Wednesday of every month at 5.00pm in El Pariso Bar, located close to Carrefour. The RNA organise many social activities, lunches around the region and partake in many other events, plus of course such important occasions as Remembrance Sunday.

There next major event will be the presentation of standards at Remembrance Sunday, for Poppy Day. In 1992 after successful negotiations with the RNA Headquarters in London, the Torrevieja Branch of the RNA was formed, comprising around twelve members.

2005 saw membership pass the enrolment of their 100th member. Current membership is around 95 although many members go back and forth to the UK with a core of about 80 always in Torrevieja.

The aim of the Association is to further the efficiency of the Service in which members are serving, or have served by fostering ‘Esprit de Corps’ by preserving the

traditions of the Service and achieving those ideals for which Naval services have fought. We help and assist our members to integrate with the Spanish community, and to this end they enjoy a very close and friendly working relationship with the Town Hall. RNA Chairman Paul Edwards said that the “Association are proud to be included in a number of official events and fiestas held annually in the Torrevieja area.”

Their activities include the distribution of useful information from a wide range of both UK and Spanish sources, and guidance on the availability of expert advice often in such problem areas as pensions, entitlements, tax regulations etc. can be made available. A very worthwhile, but little publicized aspect of the Association is assistance which can be offered in a variety of welfare cases; which is given in complete confidence. Zombies pound of flesh While Torrevieja has planned some fun events to celebrate Halloween, the fact that thousands of people will not be participating in the annual Halloween Parade, which was cancelled by the Town Hall, has not gone down well in many quarters. Add to that the fact that the Council has broken their own rules once again, and hired a company without putting something out to tender, has also highlighted, in the eyes of the opposition Partido Popular that they are just not to be trusted.

This year's Halloween night is focused on the city's youth while if planned properly, both the commerce and youth sectors could have been catered for. Partido Popular councillors are asking questions as to why the pentapartito council are spending 18,000€ on an event that El Campello, Alicante can do at zero cost to local taxpayers. PP Councillor Miguel Cano, analysed the "pernicious" pentapartito management of the event and said: “this was another example of how they, the pentapartito, turn their backs on free competition."

The PP Councillor noted that instead of putting such a project as “Zombie Survival" out to tender to different companies that offer similar services, once again the pentapartito, has contracted a "handpicked" company, while pointing out that if this was a project that the Popular Party had organised, it would have been done

"without cost" to the council, as opposed to the 18,000€ that the pentapartito will spend on the event this year, which Cano called "a scandal". He also noted that the pentapartito government have made much of posing and posturing and pretending to be the savour of Torrevieja when in fact, Cano added: "the council say they have created a way to award smaller contracts, however they then do not practice what they themselves defined as 'cronyism or patronage'.” A similar situation occurred when the pentapartito awarded a contract to a printing company in Leon for the May Fair Magazine, which they handpicked, without putting this out to tender either.

Miguel Cano also presented copies of emails from the same company showing that prices quoted for such an event reached a maximum of 13,000€, which Cano considered "excessive" after evaluating other options.

Cano also said that "other municipalities that organised the Zombie Survival with this same company cost them a lot less. On March 28th, El Campello organised the event at zero cost. In Pilar de la Horadada on 18th April, their price did not reach 5,000€. We also know that this was the same amount quoted to Altea. However, Torrevieja will pay virtually 400% more than the highest cost paid so far in the province of Alicante.”

Councillor Cano also expressed his dissatisfaction about the fact that in the official press release from the pentapartito, he says they lied about the prices that participants have to pay in which it was stated this ranged between 5.00€ and 33.00€, pointing people to the Portal "entradium" where it is clearly marketed with prices ranging from 9,00€ to 66.00€.

Putting this into perspective, if one takes the 18,000€ paid by the council plus the payment of their estimate of 2,000 people at an average price of 30.00€, this would amount to another 60,000€ in fees, with the company benefiting from the event by a total of 78,000€, minus their expenses. This is to a

company that Cano noted was handpicked by the pentapartito and awarded to them without any bidding contest and without giving any options to other business engaged in exactly the same reality game creation. To which, Cano noted: “we must add that the prices of some of the other companies are significantly cheaper for participants, ranging from 5.00€ to 55.00€.

In another vein, Miguel Cano lamented that "legal business, shops, restaurants, cafes and bars, all who pay their taxes, and the local entertainment business, have been subjected to strict controls that have become almost a persecution, with all sorts of restrictions, closures, constant revisions and now, they organise an event of this magnitude, at this inflated cost and at a time when the shops and hospitality trade is closed. In addition to this, the pubs are being forced to close at 3.30am while the Zombie Survival event will end at 7.00am, no doubt resulting in a disturbance to the neighbours.”

Although details are still sketchy, it seems that the event will be based around La Mata and run from 10.00pm until 7.00pm, with the event starting proper at 11.00pm. Prices range from 9.00€ to arrive in make up, 18€ to be made up with the full entrance price of 44€, although the pentapartito council did announce that discounts would be available for Torrevieja residents.

However, those discounts or further details have yet to be announced.

Costa Blanca's Inland Tourism

Last week the Costa Blanca Tourism Board looked at other options by creating a tourist route that can be shared by different municipalities throughout the province. So said the Vice President and Deputy of Tourism, Eduardo Dolon, to members of the Tourism Association of Alicante Interior, who met in Alcoy to outline the details of this new initiative and discuss first hand the priorities of this sector, that year after year, have raised more and more interest among visitors.

Dolon said; “Among the priorities of the Provincial Government is the promotion of domestic tourism. Therefore, the Costa Blanca Tourism Board are working on creating a very powerful route that runs from north to south, covering the inland areas of our province,” pointed out Dolon.

The deputy of Tourism also used this working meeting to make new tools available from the Tourist Board to local entrepreneurs. In this regard, he informed them of the various support programs that are used to promote the autonomous organization to help assist municipalities and non-profit associations throughout the province in the development of tourist activities, plus the promotion of specific campaigns, or the printing and translation of promotional material.

The president of the Association, Jordi Linares, said he very much appreciated the

meeting, and added; “one of our priorities is promoting all of our different tourist resources that the visitor can find within our province.” Eduardo Dolon also called on members of the association to meet periodically to address the development of all these actions that had been discussed and insisted that the Costa Blanca Tourism Board will continue working to add value to the tourism offer in the interior zone of the Costa Blanca through encouraging familiarity trips, press trips and other

Hollywood Comes to Javea The end of Free Speech?

Javea may not be Hollywood, and yet many film stars have come to the Valencia Community to make films over the years, including George Clooney, Hugh Laurie, Yul Brynner, Dirk Bogarde, Sir Alec Guinness, Bruce Willis, Michael York, Oliver Reed, Charlton Heston, Sophia Loren, Peter Ustinov, Robert Ryan, Henry Cavell or Liam Neeson.

Valencia based writer and teacher Bob Yareham has published a book called A Set Jetters Guide to Spain: 101 Locations and will be at the Javea Parador on November 14th speaking about some of the more than 700 English language films that have been made in Spain, with a special emphasis on films made in the Valencia Community.

Many Paradors have been used for films, such as Sigüenza, where Ridley Scott shot ‘1492’, or Oropesa in the province of Toledo, where Frank Sinatra stirred up guerrilla trouble during ‘Pride and Passion’, Hondarribia, where Dustin Hoffman and Steve McQueen were marched into exile in ‘Papillon’, or Chinchón, where John Wayne set up his big top in ‘Circus World’ and Cardona where Orson Welles turned the 9th century castle into Windsor, and where Henry IV and his son, the future Henry V argued about kingship in ‘Chimes at Midnight’.

The Javea presentation will be the third Parador where the book has been

presented, following similar events at Oropesa and Cardona. The author has also devised an activity for educational institutions, through which Spanish students can learn about the rich history of the international cinema industry in Spain in a combined English and History lesson. That activity is a collaboration with the L’Iber Museum in Valencia, which houses the largest collection of toy soldiers in the world.

After a tour of the museum in English, Spanish school students review the history of the world through the many historical films shot in Spain. This activity, which is now in its second year, is free to schools thanks to the collaboration of Banco Sabadell. The event will take place in the Javea Parador on Saturday 14th November 2015 at 5.00pm, and admission is of course, free. Londoner Bob Yareham is an author plus English and History teacher who has lived in Valencia since 1981.

With the new James Bond film SPECTRE hitting the UK Screens, and talk of the possibility of a Black James Bond on the future, possibly we already have a role model. During the week that saw the state visit of the premier of China, two seemingly disparate issues collided. ‘Are we really freer than China’ and ‘Are we really trying to recruit Black people in the Police force’?

Carlton King is a 28 year veteran of Britain’s police and security services who was commended for his bravery, professionalism and meritorious service on many occasions. As a member of Scotland Yard’s Special Branch, MI6 and the National Public Order Intelligence Service, Carlton lead numerous security, counter terror and intelligence operations at home and on the ground in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Colombia, Pakistan and numerous other countries around the world.

So, where’s the connection between our obvious democratic freedoms, China’s known penchant for censorship and the woeful recruitment of Black people in to Britain’s police forces? Carlton happens to be Black and his memoire, ‘A Secret Life – One Man’s unique role in Britain’s secret intelligence services’, has been supressed and censored by the Metropolitan Police.

In summer of 2012, although now retired, Carlton scrupulously kept to the terms of the Official Secrets Act and submitted his draft memoir to the Commissioner of Metropolitan to make sure he had not transgressed any aspects of national security. Nearly a year later and

after several letters to very senior Met officers and the Commissioner requesting a timely response to his submission, Carlton was informed that the Met had ‘lost’ his memoir.

Carlton immediately resubmitted his memoir and finally in late autumn 2014, after many redactions, the Met agreed that neither they nor government would seek to frustrate the book’s publication any further. Unfortunately, despite all Carlton’s efforts to keep to the spirit of the agreement with the Met, in May of this year shortly prior to his memoir’s publication, the Met threatened his publisher with a High Court injunction.

Ironically, at the same time as the furore over freedom of speech and ‘Je suis Charlie’, censorship in the UK had caused Carlton’s publisher and the mass circulation newspaper set to serialise his book, to pull out.

So, at one fell swoop, the Met’s leadership had turned a predominantly positive, albeit warts and all story for the Met, into what could appear to be an attempt to hide incompetence and institutional racism in the Met by utilising the cloak of national security. Town meets Country in Torrevieja The TOWN MEETS COUNTRY Event on Saturday 14th November from 10.00am to 5.00pm is going to be a one day FUNDay in aid of the Torrevieja's local dog pound, usually called the Perrera, which is now going through some very positive changes, as well as a change of name now called The Albergue Muncipal.

Councillor for 'Pets' Carmen Morate informed the event organisers GM Promotions that the veterinarian service in the dog pound is very deficient, as they only have a few volunteers to clean the cages for the cats and to walk the dogs but they need many, many more and are in need of people willing to foster old, very young or sick dogs as well as adopt a pet. Carmen is looking forward to the Town Meets Country Event, to let the people know of the existence of this dog pound and of course to let people know of the existence of so many beautiful sad dogs and cats waiting to be taken to their forever homes and receive the love they deserve.

This event will focus on animal welfare and information, but as it’s also going to be a FUN-DAY there will also be lots of animal attractions plus stands and stalls, local produce to purchase, catering on site plus lots of prizes to be won. Building 4,000 new houses may be rejected “Good news. The Valencia regional government is reported to be questioning a mega-project to build nearly 4000 new houses in Orihuela Costa which could increase the population by some 10,000 new residents. Orihuela Costa already has 35,000 residents, more than Orihuela city, contributes over 60% of the revenues of the municipality and receives in return inadequate services such as street cleaning, has no proper parks and gardens and not even a police station open 24 hours a day. Given the inability of Orihuela Town Hall to plan and provide adequate services for the existing 35,000 residents of Orihuela Costa, to allow an increase in the population of some 10,000 residents would be a disaster for the quality of life of those living on the coast.

This mega building project would be situated in Orihuela Costa, on the San Miguel-Pilar road, close to Campoamor golf club and bordering the natural park of Sierra Escalona. The area it would cover is a massive 1,400,000 square metres on land full of pine trees, orange and lemon trees, and other vegetation. It is said to have a wildlife population of birds and animals including owls and eagles, similar to that of Sierra Escalona which has been designated a natural park to ensure their environmental protection. The area it would cover is also some 500 metres from the Campoamor burning waste tip, close to Las Ramblas urbanisation and golf course, which is spewing out toxic fumes endangering the health of those living nearby as well as the environment generally. The environmental damage as such as well as the proximity of the illegal burning waste tip are further reasons for not allowing this megabuilding project.

C.L.A.R.O. urges the government of Orihuela and the political parties in the Town Council to oppose the PAU-5 mega project and to ensure that in the new Master Plan for Orihuela it and similar mega projects would be excluded. We challenge the previous Socialist Party councillor for Urban Affairs to confirm that the Master Plan which he was then responsible for would exclude the PAU-5 project. He must appreciate that the realisation of such a project would not only be disastrous for the environment but also, because of insufficient services and infrastructure in Orihuela Costa, would be disastrous for the quality of life The regional government of Valencia is to be congratulated on subjecting this environmentally destructive project, entitled PAU-5, to the closest scrutiny. The project dates back to 1994. It was approved by the Orihuela Popular Party government in 2009 and was denounced by C.L.A.R.O. then for the environmental destruction it would involve. It has not yet been approved by the Valencia regional government. The fact that the new Master Plan for Orihuela is nearing completion and may not include provision for such a project is reported to be the reason for the developer to be anxious to speed up approval. In the past this would have been tantamount to getting approval, but no longer. An ecological friendly government is in power in Valencia and they are carrying out an environmental impact study of PAU-5 seeking the contribution of groups such as the Friends of Sierra Escalona who are strongly opposed to major urban developments in environmentally sensitive areas. They opposed the Colinas Golf project which is close by and actually in the

We urge the government of Valencia to oppose this project and to turn its attention as soon as possible to the future of Cala Mosca, the last green area on Orihuela Costa. The plan to build 1,500 new houses on Cala Mosca, another mega project which would add 5,000 new residents to the coastal population, has been stopped by a decision of the European Parliament on the basis of a C.L.A.R.O. petition signed by over 7,000 people presented to the parliament in 2010. The European Parliament has insisted on the need for a public consultation and environmental impact study which previous Orihuela governments had avoided. Two years ago, C.L.A.R.O. organised the submission of over 1,000 complaints (alegaciones) against this building project in the context of these consultation and environmental impact study procedures. The government of Valencia has the next word to say on the future of Cala Mosca and we hope, like PAU-5, this project will also be rejected.

La Sagrada Familia Nearly Complete After Over 130 Years of Construction Work on Barcelona's breathtaking La Sagrada Familia Basilica, designed by visionary architect Antoni Gaudi, has entered its final phase of raising six immense towers that will make it Europe's tallest religious building, surpassing Germany's Ulm Minster.

Presenting the project Thursday, chief architect Jordi Fauli said the central "Tower of Jesus Christ," the tallest of the six, will make the architectural marvel that draws millions of visitors each year one for the record books when it is finished

in a little over a decade.

"The central tower of 172.5 meters (566 feet) will make it the tallest cathedral in Europe, because the tallest tower in Europe is Ulm, at 162 meters (531.5 feet)," Fauli said.

St. Peter's Basilica in Rome will still have the tallest interior.

The Sagrada Familia, an emblematic fixture of the Barcelona skyline and a major tourist site, had its first stone laid in 1882. It is 70-percent complete and currently tops out at 112 meters (367 feet).

Fauli said the plan to have the towers and most of the church's structure completed in 2026 for the 100th anniversary of Gaudi's death is still on schedule.

He said there will still be some elements left to finish, such as decorations.

"It's difficult to predict but we can say that it will be

completed by 2030, 2032," he said.

The "Tower of Jesus Christ" will be crowned by a cross and tightly surrounded by five other towers, one dedicated to Mary and four slightly shorter ones for the four evangelists.

Fauli unveiled the next phase of the construction in a newly finished chamber that formed a small amphitheatre, perched 60 meters (196 feet) above the floor

of the church from where hundreds of visitors gazed at the church's stained glass windows and arching ceilings.

The tower will rise directly above the chamber, which is designed to support the weight of the towers and channel sunlight into the building.

A mere 15 years ago, there was no roof on the inner part of the church as it stood between the two beautiful facades with eight

bell towers that leave spectators overcome with awe, one side looking like a sand castle and the other a work of art inspired by cubist painting.

Gaudi won the patronage of some of Barcelona's wealthiest industrialist and upper-crust families, who commissioned him to build gorgeous homes and other daring buildings and parks that have helped make Barcelona a leading tourist destination.

Judge sends Mallorca man to jail for killing his own horse after race A 41-year-old man was admitted into prison on Wednesday after being convicted of beating his own racehorse to death with a metal bar in 2012.

This is the first time in Spain that someone has been sent to jail for animal abuse, said Silvia Barquera, president of the political party PACMA, which campaigns for animal rights.

Eugenio Sánchez, a resident of Manacor (Mallorca), will serve eight months at the Palma penitentiary after a court denied his request to have the prison term commuted to community work.

“The atrocious death of this racehorse inside his own stall at the racetrack constitutes an aberration in the 21st century,” wrote the judge in her decision, handed down on September 21.

The sentence says that Sánchez, co-owner of Sorky das Pont, used unusual violence against the

animal, beating him with a metal bar that broke the animal’s neck as it tried to flee its tormentor on December 30, 2012.

The horse had just been disqualified from a race for trotters in which the animal lost its pace and broke into a gallop. The total prize money was €500.

Spanish judge asks Britain again to extradite ETA militant A Spanish judge on Friday asked Britain for the fourth time to detain and extradite a convicted member of the armed Basque separatist group ETA back to Spain.

Judge Jose de la Mata reiterated the order after Britain refused to turn over Antonio Troitino and declined to allow him to make a statement by videoconference Troitino spent 24 years in Spanish prisons for his role in 22 murders by ETA, the armed Basque separatist movement.

He was arrested in 1987 and sentenced to more than 2,000 years for the 22 killings.

A legal bungle in April 2011 saw him released and he went on the run to London, where he was arrested the following year.

In October 2013, he was among scores of ETA members formally released under a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights.

But the Spanish courts demanded Britain send him back to Spain to answer further charges against him.

In his request, De la Mata said the case was at a "dead end" and could not advance with Troitino is on the run since the Spain does not allow for trials in absentia.

ETA has been blamed for more than 800 deaths

in a four-decade campaign of bombings and shootings in its fight for an independent homeland in northern Spain and southwestern France.

The group in 2011 announced it had halted its armed activities, but it has refused to hand over its weapons or dissolve the organisation, as demanded by both France and Spain.

ETA began a unilateral disarmament programme in early 2014, in cooperation with the International Verification Commission, an independent group of experts from various countries that has not been officially recognised by the Spanish government.

Spanish king, eyeing Catalan independence bid, warns divisions 'impoverish' King Felipe VI of Spain on Friday warned against "walls" and divisions that "impoverish and isolate" as an independence drive in the northeast region of Catalonia gets into higher gear.

"When divisions are promoted, something very deep breaks within us, in our very being, in our hearts. Let nobody use emotions to build walls," he said during a televised ceremony for the country's Princess of Asturias awards.

The monarch did not mention Catalonia by name, but gave a clear indication of his fears that the country could split.

"Divisions never make a people great, they only impoverish and isolate it. Let us avoid social fractures which cause so much harm," he said.

His comments came just three days before a new regional parliament is due to be formed in Catalonia following elections last month in which proindependence parties won a majority of 72 seats in the 135-seat Catalan regional assembly.

During the campaign the head of the Catalan government, Artur Mas, vowed to set Catalonia on a path toward independence within 18 months if he gets backing from the new parliament.

But the pro-independence camp fell short of winning a majority of votes, capturing 48 percent of all ballots, handing its adversaries in the central government in Madrid a strong argument to resist the push for independence.

Conservative Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy argues the Spanish constitution does not allow any region to break away and he has vowed to ensure that the law is respected.

"In a democratic society like ours, the defence of legality and constitutional principles is the guarantee of the rights and freedoms of all citizens," he said.

"Let's continue to build Spain convinced and very conscious that a European nation with millennial roots and a universal vocation like ours, will remain united towards a future of greater cooperation and progress," he added.

Catalonia, a region of 7.5 million people which accounts for a fifth of Spain's economic output, has its own language, which was suppressed during the 1939-75 dictatorship of General Francisco Franco.

The region's independence drive has intensified over the recent years of economic crisis. Catalans complain about how much of their tax money is redistributed to the rest of Spain.

Spanish couple accused of murdering adopted Chinese daughter A Spanish couple accused of drugging and suffocating their 12-year-old adopted Chinese daughter reiterated their innocence on Friday on the last day of their trial, in a case that has drawn the attention of Beijing.

Rosario Porto, a former lawyer, and her ex-husband, journalist Alfonso Basterra, are accused of murdering Asunta Yong Fang Basterra Porto, whom they adopted when she was a baby.

The couple are accused of drugging Asunta with the sedative Orfidal periodically for three months and finally asphyxiating her in September 2013, when the child's body was found in a wood near northwestern city of Santiago de Compostela.

Prosecutors on Thursday told the nine members of the jury that Porto, 46, suffocated Asunta on her own in a plan developed with her ex husband.

Both accused declined their right to speak on the last day of their trial and denied the accusations against them through their lawyers.

"Nothing to say," said Basterra, 51, in an extract of the hearing broadcast on television.

Porto's lawyer, Jose Luis Gutierrez Aranguren, asked the jurors if the goal was to sedate and kill the girl "what sense does it have" to give Asunta sedatives three months earlier.

Dressed all in black, Porto bowed her head and crossed her arms in front of her chest as her lawyer spoke.

During the trial Porto told the court that she had been suffering from depression that year and had herself been taking the sedative Orfidal.

Basterra's lawyer Belen Hospido said her client had bought boxes of Orfidal but he thought they were for his ex-wife.

"He had no reason to think that Mrs. Porto was not taking those pills...he had no reason to think that something strange was going on," she told the court.

At the time of the girl's death, the couple were separated but were raising their adopted daughter together.

Public prosecutors have asked that both Porto and Basterra each get prison sentences of 18 years.

The nine-member jury will begin deliberations on Monday.

Over 100 witnesses and experts testified at the trial, which got underway at the end of September.

The case shocked Spain and drew international attention when it came to light, prompting a statement of concern by the Chinese foreign ministry.

DEAR READERS and Clients. The Coastrider has been your free, local weekly newspaper since 2004 and has not, according to rumours and radio advertising, changed its name to the Costa Blanca People. Some of the former team from the Coastrider have started their own venture called

the Costa Blanca People but continue to use the Coastrider name in their advertising and promotion.

However, the Coastrider has put its own new team together and will continue to deliver a free weekly newspaper, every Tuesday, at a growing

number of venues around the Southern Costa Blanca.

Back Stage with Shanie Artists Direct-Spain had a chat back stage with Shanie. Shanie is a fairly new arrival on the Costa Blanca, although no stranger since she has visited her parents, who have lived here twenty five years, many times.

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Shanie and I have recently started performing karaoke here in the Costa Blanca. My parents have had a property here for 25 years and they have spent most of their time out here. This is how really I

came to come over here to give it a go, to live here with my family. Also my lovely friend Helen has had an influence on me as she also performs Karaoke here.

How did you start in the business?

I'm a qualified dancing teacher and have staged many shows and have entered children for examinations with the British Ballet Organization situated in Barnes, London. I was originally taught dance by my mum Gill. I attended the "Italia Conti Stage School of Performing Arts" at age of 14. I received my teaching certificate at the "Royal Ballet School" in London. I have appeared on TV dancing and have met and also worked with some celebrities along my journey. I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching but after nearly 30 years I decided to come over here along with my partner who is now retired and enjoy entertaining with karaoke. I feel very lucky in the fact that my short time here, of 5 months, I have had gigs in many venues. My latest being the "Sports Bar" at Playa Flamenca Commercial Centre, where I thoroughly enjoy performing as the owners are really friendly and so are their customers.

What would you be doing if you were not an entertainer?

If I wasn't performing gigs here, I would have carried on teaching ballet, tap and jazz back at home a little longer.

As an entertainer who has been your biggest influence?

As an entertainer my biggest influence just has to be "Sir Tom Jones"!

What was your best moment?

My best moment on stage has to be when I staged my very first show at my local theatre in South Wales. The joy of that experience just has to come a close second after I gave birth to my lovely daughter Chloe though.

What’s the best piece of advice you have received or would give someone starting out in the business?

My advice to someone who is thinking of starting out in this business would be to relax, enjoy and put your best foot forward and always work to the best of your ability and, of course, keep smiling as that will go a long way.

Any little anecdotes or interesting stories?

I did manage to keep smiling and dancing whilst performing ‘The King and I’ on stage even when my wig fell off and I was the only blonde Siamese on stage!

After Hours at EL CAPITAN

Tell us about yourselves My name is Aroldis and I own and run El Capitan Bar and Restaurant together with my father Eddie and mother Laima.

We have been open for 18 months now, although we have been in Spain for 13 years. My mother previously worked as a chef and my father in the construction industry.

What made you open a bar?

As I mentioned my mother worked as a chef for many years, here in Spain and in our native Lithuania. It had always been her dream to have her own bar with a kitchen. After many years of trying she finally persuaded my father to make it come true. He had never worked in a bar

before but to his surprise found himself feeling at home very quickly.

Where did the inspiration for the name come from?

Shortly before we opened, when we were still trying to come up with a name, my sister came to visit. Upon looking around she said that the way it was decorated, with all the blue tiles, it gave the place a nautical feel. That was all the inspiration we needed. We added fishing nets, sailors’ hats and various other things to create that nautical theme and it became ‘El Capitan.’

Who does the cooking? And how would you describe your style?

My mother does most of the cooking.

Nearly everything is home-made. To satisfy our varied clientele she does a mixture of English and Spanish food, with a little bit of Lithuanian cuisine thrown in.

What’s your favourite dish on the menu?

My mother makes the most delicious fried black bread with cheese and garlic.

It is a traditionally Lithuanian dish and I am pleased to say that most of our customers love it too, whatever their nationality. People come for miles just to try it.

Favourite day of the week?

We have a very good darts team here and play in two local leagues. We also have a ‘Fun Darts’ night on a Friday. On Saturdays we often have live entertainment or karaoke. However my favourite day of all has to be Sundays when we host our quiz night. It is meant to be a fun quiz but there is always somebody taking it really seriously to the

amusement of the rest of us. It is always an entertaining evening.

Any interesting tales?

Two things spring to mind. I mentioned the traditional Lithuanian black bread earlier. It is a simple recipe that every Lithuanian knows but an English lady bar owner was so desperate to get the recipe, she offered us money.

We didn’t take it. The other thing was when one of our regular entertainers played here for the first time. We put him in front of the dartboard and told him that if our customers didn’t like him they would start a darts match right there and then. He took it well but still looked a little nervous to start with, glancing behind him at the dartboard now and again.

Why being grateful is good for you Exercise, a healthy diet, good sleeping patterns – we know that all of these are good for us and help us live healthier lives. But there is another, simple way, to put some sunshine back in your life, and it won’t cost a penny.

Be grateful, and show it. It doesn’t take much effort - say something nice to those closest to you, say thank you whenever you get the chance and smile at people you meet during your day.

It may sound ridiculously simple, but studies are increasingly finding that being grateful improves our health, both mentally and physically, and can build stronger bonds with our families and friends.

In one set of studies, carried out by Robert Emmons of the University of California, and Michael McCullough of the University of Miami, those taking part were divided into three groups.

One set were asked to focus on hassles, another on gratitude and a third on neutral events in their lives. All then kept either a weekly or daily diary of their moods, health behaviour, coping behaviour, physical symptoms, and general comments on life.

Another, similar, study carried out by the same experts, involved people with neuromuscular disease, who were placed in either gratitude groups, or control groups with no changes involved.

The gratitude groups in all three studies showed increased well-being, compared to those in the comparison groups.

The results suggested that deliberately being aware of the good things in life may improve how we feel in terms of our own emotions and how we react with other people.

There are other benefits linked to being grateful. Study results indicate that feelings of gratitude mean that we feel

better, with fewer symptoms of physical illness, sleep better and for longer, are more optimistic and exercise more.

Other potential benefits of being grateful include: a) Having stronger friendships and social bonds b) Being more likely to offer other people support c) Having greater resources to cope with stress and difficult times d) Being more likely to feel loved and cared for by family and friends Want to give your feelings of gratitude a boost? Here’s how to get started Keep a gratitude diary. Just doing this has been found to improve mood, and make you feel good.

Every day (evenings are a good time, as you can look back at your day), make a note of three things that you feel grateful for. It can be something big – the birth of a grandchild, for instance, or simply giving thanks for having a good life.

1. It can also be something small, seeing your other half smile when you gave them a hug, a phone call from a friend, sunshine, listening to a favourite piece of music, or a really good cup of tea.

2. Let the people you care for know that they matter to you, and that having them in your life makes it better.

3. Take a moment to think about how showing gratitude has affected those around you. Feeling good? You deserve it.

It’s difficult to injure yourself even if you swim every single day for 30 minutes or more. Most pools offer public swimming slots on a daily basis, and even better, on-site pools at residential complexes offer relaxing swims throughout the day, and at no extra charge.

Swim more, stay younger longer Research from the American College of Sports Medicine, USA, has found that people who swim regularly can be physically as much as 20 years younger than their non-swimming peers. Blood pressure, cholesterol levels and heart health, as well as cognitive function, were all found to be far healthier in swimmers.

Lift your mood and feel good with a swim Researchers don’t know why exactly but being in water improves mood in a way that other forms of exercise don’t – in fact, simply being in a warm pool (around 28 degrees C) makes you feel healthier and so improves your mood, casting a glow on the rest of your day.

The Health Benefits of Turmeric Both from a culinary and a medical perspective, the common curry ingredient, turmeric, is one of the most important spices. Researchers have found that it has outstanding properties as an anti-cancer and antiAlzheimer’s agent. Moreover, a landmark survey found that turmeric is one of the top five anti-oxidant foods.

This makes it one of the most valuable foods that we can use to fight cancer, Alzheimer's disease, aging and conditions associated with free radical damage and oxidative stress.

Turmeric's principal compound, curcumin, is one of the most researched of all the spice compounds. Much of the research and interest in curcumin has centred on its role in preventing and treating breast cancer, but it has also been found to have protective effects against cancers of the bladder, stomach, uterus and cervix.

When measured against other phytochemicals, curcumin exhibits at least a ten times greater chemo protective potency against cancer than its closest rivals.

Turmeric and Cancer Curcumin is known to protect against cancer through the following mechanisms.

• Assists the body's natural tumour-suppressing mechanisms.

• Destroys cancer cells by stimulating apoptosis (programmed cell death) in these cells thereby terminating the immortality so typical of cancer cell lines.

• Halts tumour proliferation by inhibiting DNA synthesis in the cancer cells and disrupting their replication.

• Inhibits the formation of the abnormal blood vessels that are essential for tumour growth.

One of turmeric's most promising uses is in the prevention and treatment of breast cancer. Most breast cancers are hormone dependent, requiring estrogen as a growth stimulant. Tamoxifen, which is one of the most used drugs in the treatment of breast cancer, works against this hormone-mediated process, interfering with estrogen's tumour stimulating effects. Curcumin exhibits its anti-estrogenic effects by blocking the estrogen-dependent receptors on tumour cells, thereby interrupting the stimulatory effects of estrogen and slowing tumour growth. Curcumin may be at least as effective as tamoxifen as an estrogen antagonist, with none of the attendant side effects of this drug.

Radiotherapy and chemotherapy are widely used, but imperfect treatments for cancer. Not only do they have

serious, debilitating side effects, but tumour cells often develop resistance to these therapeutic modalities. They also activate COX-2 enzymes that are part of the inflammatory process underlying many cancers.

Turmeric reduces the activation of COX-2 enzymes and sensitizes the tumour cells to both radiotherapy and chemotherapy, enhancing their therapeutic effects.

Apart from curcumin, other phytochemicals found in turmeric are also known to have chemo protective effects. Therefore, when it comes to prevention, it is better to take the parent spice, turmeric, rather than the pure curcumin extract. However, the treatment of existing breast cancer may call for more specific dosages of curcumin, the administration of which would need to be supervised by a qualified health practitioner.

Alzheimer's (AD) and Parkinson's Diseases Curcumin exhibits several properties that make it a valuable preventive agent for these two devastating and increasingly common diseases. Although turmeric is probably most effective as a preventive agent against these illnesses, it may also help by improving cognitive problems and inhibiting further deterioration of existing disease.

Curcumin works against neurodegenerative diseases via the following mechanisms: • The accumulation of amyloid protein in the brain is an important factor associated with Alzheimer's disease.

Its deposition is associated with oxidative damage and inflammation in the brain tissues. Curcumin is both a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent and has been shown to suppress oxidative damage, inflammation and the deposition of damaging amyloid protein in the brain. It is possible that it may actually disaggregate existing amyloid plaques and, in so doing,

could possibly reverse the course of the disease.

• Another cause of amyloid deposition in the brain is probably due to the accumulation of certain metals, as higher concentrations of harmful metals have been found in the brains of AD sufferers that in non-AD individuals. Metal molecules that find their way into the brain can both induce amyloid aggregation and are directly toxic to brain cells. Certain chelating agents have shown promise in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and curcumin's chelating properties enable it to assist the body in the removal of potentially toxic metals from the brain and other tissues.

• The abnormal proliferation of the brain’s nonneuronal cells is another pathological process that is associated with the development of both Alzheimer's and Parkinson’s diseases. Curcumin prevents the proliferation of these cells which, if allowed to continue growing, cause damage to the brain’s neuronal tissue.

Inflammatory Diseases Much of turmeric's anti-inflammatory potency can be attributed to curcumin, which is both an effective COX-2 inhibitor as well as a strong antioxidant. However, other phytochemicals found in turmeric, in particular the salicylates, also make a valuable contribution to its antiinflammatory activities and thereby its preventive properties against arthritis, autoimmune disorders and the general health consequences of chronic systemic inflammation and degenerative diseases.

Chelation Copper and iron are both essential nutrients but if they accumulate in excessive quantities they can cause serious and sometimes irreversible inflammatory and oxidative damage to a variety of tissues. Curcumin is a powerful chelating agent for both metals, binding to the metal ions and allowing them to be safely excreted in the urine.

Traditional use and modern scientific research have shown that turmeric is one of the most valuable spices in our arsenal of disease fighting foods. Synergism between different spices enhances the bioavailability of important compounds such as curcumin. Therefore, to obtain optimum benefit from turmeric, it is important to take it with other common spices.

Those who are serious about maintaining a healthy lifestyle in order to enjoy a good quality of life and reduce the risk of acquiring conditions like Alzheimer's disease and cancer would do well to ensure a daily intake of this golden spice.

Let’s start with breakfast. Your grandma wasn’t lying when she said breakfast was the most important meal of the day, and it

is. After a good couple hours of sleep, your brain has been deprived of nutrition. Your breakfast choice should be made in the attempt to awaken your brain and get your engines running.

For breakfast, you should consume a meal that has adequate carbohydrates and balance it with some protein.

Orange juice is also beneficial, first thing in the morning as the glucose (or sugar) it will release

into your brain is a great way to wake the brain up. An ideal breakfast meal would be scrambled egg whites (protein) on a slice of whole wheat toast (complex carbs) and a glass of orange juice (simple carbs).

A rule of thumb when choosing options for your meals is to eat like a king for breakfast, a prince for lunch and a pauper for dinner.

Eating a big meal early in the morning will give you many hours during the day to burn it off — provided you do participate in physical activity.

Late at night, on the other hand, is when your meals are more likely to be stored as fat because you, more than likely, don’t have enough time to burn off the energy before bedtime.

Eating before and after exercise is also important and

will depend on your individual goals. Let’s just assume your goal is to lose weight. The best time to exercise is first thing in the morning on an empty stomach; this will allow you to burn more calories. If your goal is muscle and weight gain, you should eat at least two hours before you exercise and ensure you are taking in carbohydrates via a specially formulated sports

drink, which will provide your muscles with more energy that is needed to sustain intense, physical activity.

On the question of whether or not you should eat if you’re hungry? The answer is yes. You should consume five to six small, balanced meals throughout the day to keep your energy levels up and your insulin levels sustained.

Maureen O'Hara dies at age 95 The actress Maureen O'Hara, who starred in timeless films like 'The Quiet Man' and was honoured in 2014 with an honorary Oscar, passed away last weekend. She will forever be remembered for her role in The Quiet Man as the most untameable shrew women in a predominantly male world; that of John Ford and John Wayne and, in turn, becoming he most masculine icon among female Hollywood stars. She had a talent for sports, an interpretive wisdom, green eyes, almost flaming red hair and a dazzling beauty: a cocktail that was also 100% Irish. All that was Maureen O'Hara, who died on Saturday at age 95, who was unclassifiable, had talents other actress missed, who found her perfect cinematic environment, created by John Ford.

Her career is full of moments that no other woman could have played. Last year she received the Honorary Oscar from the hands of Liam Neeson and Clint Eastwood, and died surrounded by her family in Boise (Idaho). "Maureen was our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She died peacefully, surrounded by her family, who recalled her life listening to the music from our favourite movie, The Quiet Man,” according to her manager and co-author of her memoirs, Johnny Nicoletti.

Maureen O'Hara Maureen Fitzsimmons was born Ranelagh, a suburb of Dublin on August 17, 1920, and second daughter of the owner of a textile business, footballer and a singer. At age 14 she studied at Dublin's Abbey Theater and at 18 she had already appeared in two British musicals. Her first screen test for Hollywood was a disaster, buried in a layer of makeup and badly dressed. But the actor Charles Laughton and producer Eric Pommer didn't fail to see her talent. They changed her name to O'Hara to better fit her profile and pushed for her to use her green eyes to good use with the advent of Technicolor and so she was signed up to star in Jamaica Inn (1939), the last British film by Alfred

Hitchcock, that after filming this he went to Hollywood quickly followed by O'Hara, who also crossed the Atlantic.

Some of her best works were filmed in black and white; interestingly, when the Technicolor movie came in the fifties, O'Hara was christened the Queen of Technicolor, because the contrast between her hair and look that hypnotized even the creators of the film process. But by then O'Hara was a star. Laughton landed with his godfather in the United States as Esmeralda in a great version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, also known in Spain as the gypsy Esmeralda (1939). In 1941, she has already filmed the first of four films with Ford: How Green Was My Valley.

She made a number of films with John Wayne - the actor with whom she is most closely associated - and

director John Ford, often both together in the same production; several were westerns, a notable exception being The Quiet Man (1952). She also starred in swashbucklers such as The Black Swan (1942), opposite Tyrone Power, and Sinbad the Sailor (1947), with Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., as well as the Christmas classic Miracle on 34th Street (1947), with John Payne, Natalie Wood and Edmund Gwenn.

Although O'Hara was never nominated for a competitive Academy Award, in November 2014 she was presented with an Honorary Academy Award with the inscription "To Maureen O'Hara, one of Hollywood's brightest stars, whose inspiring performances glowed with passion, warmth and strength". After Myrna Loy, O'Hara was only the second actress to receive an Academy Award for acting without having been nominated previously. Her autobiography, 'Tis Herself, was published in 2004 and was a New York Times Bestseller. Married three times, most recently marked its life until the end of his days. In 1968 she married Charles Blair an ex-aviator of the armed forces, which had previously been hers for year’s friend who owned a small airline, Antilles Airboats. Together, co-they directed the company and retired from films O'Hara in 1973 after the TV movie The Red Pony. In 1978 Blair died in a plane crash and O'Hara was devastated, while becoming the first woman who ran an airline. His retirement came only four times to act: three for the lasttelevision with The Last Dance (2000) - and for cinema, as the mother of John Candy in Me, you and Mom (1991).

In 2004 she published her autobiography, 'Tis Herself' and was also honoured by the Academy of Cinema and Television of Ireland, because she never stopped feeling Irish, despite having dual citizenship. With John Wayne made she made five films. In all of them they played husband and wife, always arguing and being separated, albeit briefly. John Wayne summed her up as he once said: "I have many friends and prefer male company, except with Maureen. She's a great guy."

The day I scored an 'own goal' when asking for Howard Kendall's autograph - once too often!

By Andrew Atkinson - Los Montesinos sports journalist and author ALL football kids want one thing as they go in pursuit of their hero - an autograph - and the sad news this month of one of my boyhood heroes Howard Kendall, who has died, age 69, brought back fond memories. I was often - very often - a visitor to Kendall's parents' house in my home town (now City) Preston, where Howard began his career at Preston North End - The Lilywhites - and went down in history as the youngster player to play in the FA Cup Final, against West Ham in 1964.

"At Preston I was the youngest player to play in a FA Cup Final in 1964, and my parents were very proud," said Kendall. At the time I was just seven years' old, with Kendall, aged 17, who went on to make 104 appearances for North End, prior to joining Everton in 1967 in a £85,000 move to Goodison Park. As a manager

Kendall spent two-and-a-half years in charge of Athletic Bilbao between 1987-89 - in the wake of signing a precontract with Barcelona in 1986 to replace Barca coach Terry Venables - who was going to depart - but remained.

Kendall felt the pressure at Athletic Bilbao although this was not in the same cauldron as at Barcelona or Real Madrid. Kendall had fond memories of Bilbao, deeming it a massive club, 'One big happy family, because they're all Basques', he said. Kendall, who could not speak Spanish, and had an interpreter from Leeds, lived with a Basque family, that of the former Athletico Bilbao player Jesus Rente. Following his playing career Kendall became manager at Everton, winning the league title twice; the FA Cup and European Cup Winners Cup. Along with being manager at Everton, Athletic Bilbao, Manchester City, Sheffield United and Notts County, Kendall also held managerial posts at Greek clubs Xanthi and Ethnikos Piraeus.

Prior to Kendall's successful path in the world of football, I can still see myself regularly walking up his garden path in Powis Road, Ashton, Preston, Lancashire, autograph book - and scrap book - in hand. This despite often 'nicking off' school to go and get his and his North End teammates' autographs at the Lowthorpe Road 'Deepdale' training ground. Howard played for Preston during 1963-67 and current Lilywhites manager Simon Grayson said: “It is very sad news about Howard

Kendall, huge condolences to his family. He was a big character in the football world. Howard is going to be a big miss.”

One occasion that sticks out in my mind is the time I knocked on his parents door, and his dad, Howard senior, appearing: "Howard's not in, but leave your autograph book, and scrapbook, and I'll get him to sign them," said Mr Kendall snr. When I went back the following day Howard senior gave me back my autograph book and scrapbook - which were duly signed - by his dad, I could tell it wasn't Howard's signature - I'd got it that often. His dad had FORGED his autograph. It was one autograph hunters 'own goal'.

Ghost of 'hanged pub landlord' captured on camera for first time A spine-tingling image has been caught on camera for the first time believed to show the ghost of a landlord who committed suicide in one of Britain's most haunted pubs.

Staff at The Golden Fleece in York have reported in the past that they felt tightness around their necks behind the bar where it is believed a landlord once hanged himself.

Diner Susanne Taggart was taking photographs when she visited the pub ahead of doing a paranormal investigation later that evening when she caught the creepy image.

The picture shows the clear shape of a man behind the bar of the 500-year-old pub, despite no one being stood there at the time.

Susanne, who is 51 and from Manchester, said: "I was just taking a few shots of the scene around us while we had our dinner. I wasn't even thinking of using them for anything, it was just to show where we were going to be investigating later.

"But then later that evening when my husband Steve was looking through the pictures he spotted a strange shadow behind the bar.

"It was very dark and it clearly is the lurking shape of big person as you can see the head and shoulders, but the only person in the shot was the girl behind the bar and you can see her on the left. She confirmed to us that no one else was there with her.

"There was a kitchen door behind the figure but it is completely obscured by this shadow. None of us could believe it. Quite a few people in our group were shook by the photo and we found it very unsettling."

Throughout the rest of the evening at The Golden Fleece, cold chills were felt in certain areas of the house

and a child's voice was heard at one point.

Susanne took the picture over a year ago but after analysing it and not being able to explain the figure, she eventually forgot about it.

Now she is calling on the public to see if anyone can explain it.

Susanne, who runs the UK Shadow Seekers paranormal investigation team, said: "Despite being a paranormal investigator, I am definitely a sceptic. While I like to think there could be something out there, I think there is a rational explanation to most the things we see and think are 'supernatural'.

"So when I saw this picture, despite it being very creepy, I thought there must be a rational explanation."

However a friend of mine analysed the picture and said that there was no light penetrating the shadow, it was just a dense black shape. That was very unsettling.

"This is the one piece of footage we have ever found that we are not able to debunk. There is no explanation that I can think of. There was no one stood there and yet the shape of a person is clear and it is in the same spot where stories say the landlord hanged himself.

"If anyone out there can look at it and provide an

Ted Richards Has Ears Cut Off To Look More Like His Beloved Pet Parrots As far as bird-brained ideas go, this is a good one.

Having already tattooed his face and eyeballs so he looks more like his beloved parrots, Ted Richards, 56, underwent surgery to have his ears removed to further his transformation.

The operation took six hours to complete and Richards couldn't be happier about the results. It is unclear what his five feathered friends make of the transformation.

"I think it looks really great. I love it. It's the best thing that has happened to me. I am so happy it's unreal, I can't stop looking in the mirror," Richards told South West News Service.

"I've done it because I want to look like my

parrots as much as possible. I've had my hair long for so many years my ears have been covered up."

The Bristol resident said he used to be teased about his ears when he was younger, but insists that's not the reason why he went under the knife.

The only downside to the operation was that at first the retired shoe factory worker had trouble keeping his glasses in place. However, he soon found a solution, by adding two metal pins to the side of his head.

Richards joked to SWNS: "I went to the supermarket the other day and when I went in I said 'Blimey, it's so windy out there it blew my ears off,' and everybody had a chuckle."

Richards, who has over 110 tattoos, 50 piercings and a split tongue, has given his severed ear tissue to a friend who "will appreciate them," and has set his sights on another flight of fancy: finding a surgeon who can turn his nose into a beak.

Marc Pacifico, a consultant plastic surgeon and member of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, was horrified the surgery had taken place.

He told Metro: "I am absolutely horrified to learn that someone has voluntarily put themselves forward for this to be done and possibly more so that he found somebody to actually carry it out."

Richards, who not surprisingly is known as Parrot Man, also shares his home with a South American green iguana and called Iggy, and pitbull terrier Candy.

"There are a number of accounts of staff who have felt a sudden tightening around their neck while standing at the bar - the very bar where, it is said, an earlier landlord hanged himself.

"In addition to these sightings there have been numerous other disturbing occurrences reported over the years. Doors banging, mysterious footsteps on the stairs, strange lights, cold spots and temperature changes, candles that light themselves, beds that move and doors that slam.

"Seriously spooky and impressive enough for the Most Haunted team from Living TV to camp out with us in 2005 and film their investigations of our resident spectres."

A pub was first mentioned in the city archives on the site of The Golden Fleece all the way back in 1503 and despite structural changes, the building has remained largely the same ever since.

Dopey drug dealer Dopey drug dealer Rezwan Hussain panicked when police called at his home and threw bags of heroin and cocaine out of an attic window ... which landed at the feet of officers outside.

Hussain, 29, was caught red-handed after police arrived at his mother’s home in March this year to speak to his brother, only to be told he was out.

But Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court heard that as they returned to their car, Hussain panicked, dashed upstairs to his stash of drugs and began throwing them out of the window.

By the time officers got to their vehicle, they noticed the pavement was littered with neatly-wrapped bags of cocaine, crack cocaine and heroin.

Police arrested his parents after going back to the house but Hussain had fled. A search of the property uncovered a

£3million drugs factory in the basement.

Hussain of Rochdale, gave himself up after claiming responsibility for the drugs operation to allow his family members to be released.

He was this week jailed for 11 years and six months after pleading guilty to supplying Class A drugs. Hussain’s brother, Imran, is still being hunted by police in connection with the offences.

MINI reveals new Convertible The third model off MINI’s new modular UKL frontdrive architecture, the four-seat MINI Convertible (previously called the Cabrio) is one of the obvious survivors in boss Peter Schwarzenbauer’s modelslashing regime. It should be. Its predecessors have all sold by the bucket load.

It joins the three-door MINI hatch and the fivedoor MINI Clubman as the standard bearers of the MINI range, and it’s bigger than before in almost every significant dimension.

Less “mini” with every passing generation, the Convertible is 98mm longer than the old car, 44mm wider, 7mm taller and the wheelbase is 28mm longer, too. The overhangs are longer at both ends, the rear track width is up 34mm and the front end’s track is 42mm wider. We could go on like this, but it’s a product of the UKL architecture, and MINI’s product planners just happen to think that’s what Convertible owners want.

It’s still only 3821mm long (though the Cooper S is 39mm longer), 1727mm wide and 1415mm high, with a 2495mm wheelbase.

It’s not all negative, with the luggage space growing 25 per cent to 215 litres, though that drops to 160 litres when the multi-layer cloth roof is folded down. MINI has finally given it full electronic operation, so it has a sliding function as well as being able to retract or rise at up to 30km/h.

There are also pop-up rollover protection bars that are invisible to the naked eye, but obvious to the upside down occupants. Those in the rear are obviously drawing the short straw, but their seat bases are longer than before, the rear width is up 34mm at the shoulders and 112mm at the elbow, while there’s another 36mm of knee room.

There are some additional quirks, too, such as

allowing the roof to be opened via a button on the key, plus allowing the front part of the roof to slide back up to 40mm to give it a sunroof-style effect.

It has climate-control air-conditioning as standard equipment (a dual-zone set-up is optional), and its audio system includes an AUX-in plug and a USB socket, plus you can option up all manner of Union Jack paraphernalia everywhere from the roof to the mirrors to the seats.

It has ramped up the weirdness with an Always Open Timer, which measures the amount of time the Convertible spends with the roof down, from the time it’s bought.

It will launch in three-cylinder Cooper, four-cylinder Cooper S and three-cylinder Cooper D (diesel) variants initially, so they’ll respectively deliver 100kW, 141kW and 85kW. The 1275kg (DIN) Cooper S gets the same directinjection turbo petrol motor, with variable valve lift and timing, as the Cooper S hatch, and it brings 280Nm of

torque to the fight at just 1250rpm (though it can briefly overboost for 300Nm), then holds that until 4000rpm. The power peaks between 5000 and 6000rpm, which is good enough to get the automatic version to 100km/h in 7.1 seconds and to give it a top speed of 230km/h.

The automatic is not only a bit quicker than the manual, but a bit more frugal, posting an NEDC consumption figure of 5.6L/100km (compared to 6.0L/100km for the manual).

The three-cylinder Cooper loses 500cc of engine capacity, but the rest of the engine hardware is identical to the Cooper S, with the 1.5-litre motor delivering 100kW of power from 4400rpm and 220Nm of torque at 1250.

The 1205kg (DIN) car’s acceleration to 100km/h blows out to 8.7 seconds and its top speed drops to 208km/h, but its NEDC figure also falls, bringing it in at 4.9L/100km (114g/km).

It might only have 85kW of power at 4000rpm, but the 1.5-litre, three-cylinder Cooper D diesel motor doesn’t want for torque, delivering 270Nm of the stuff from 1750rpm to 2250. The 1245kg car only just sneaks beneath the 10-second barrier in the sprint to 100km/h, but it pulls the NEDC number even lower, with 3.8L/100km and its CO2 emissions plummet to 105g/km.

All models will be standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, though a six-speed automatic is optional and the Cooper S slusher gets steering wheel-mounted shift paddles.

Its wheel and tyre options range from 15 to 18 inches, sitting beneath the same MacPherson strut front end and multi-link rear found in the hatch. Two-way adjustable dampers are available for the first time, though the standard damper is a fixed-rate unit.

Spain verses England friendly Last week Vicente del Bosque, was in Alicante to present details of the Spain verses England friendly football match, to be played at the José Rico Pérez Stadium of Hercules. The Spanish football federation originally planned to play the match in Madrid however, thanks to the work of the Costa Blanca Tourist Board, this time it's the turn of the Southern Costa Blanca to host the international friendly match to be played between Spain and England on November 13.

After the official ceremony that was chaired by the President of the Provincial Council, Cesar Sanchez and the president of the Valencian Football Federation, Vicente Muñozhe, and Vicente del Bosque visited the José Rico Pérez stadium where he checked the status of the field and was impressed by the excellent conditions. Del Bosque met with sporting director Dani Barroso, Hercules coach, Manolo Herrero and Javi Portillo the captain of Hercules, with whom he has a close friendship since his days at Real Madrid. Del Bosque also had the opportunity to see for himself firsthand the project regarding the Hercules Paralympic team. Some of its members were photographed with the coach, who will sponsor the section, and he was given a T-shirt from Paralympic Hercules for his son, Alvaro.

Tickets are on sale online at: www.rfef.es and www.sefutbol.com.

Sales at the Rico Perez Stadium will not be available until November 5th. The ticket prices for this event, which will serve as preparation for Euro 2016 in France, range between 20€ to 60€.

Hercules season ticket holders will be able to purchase tickets at the stadium from the 2nd to 4th November, provided that they are not sold out. The prices are affordable for fans and one of main reasons that Alicante has been chosen for the game is due to the involvement of the Alicante Council due to the high number of British residents who live in the area.

Fans can be photographed with the trophy and possibly win free tickets for the game and merchandising items from sponsors participating in games and competitions prepared by Adidas, Iberdrola, Pelayo, Cabreiroá and Continental, sponsors of the team. All Torrevieja but they still lost against Castellon (0-1) CD Torrevieja looked good and had the vast majority of play on Sunday but despite the intense bombing that underwent the goal of the visitors, they could just not find a way to get the ball into the back of the net. In return, Castellon had four shots on target, producing two good saves, once clearance off the line and goal.

Torrevieja paid in the end for the absence of any specific player to put the ball in the net in this key clash for both sides who are sitting in the bottom half of the table. By Terry Harris On Saturday 24th October, CD Montesinos travelled to Callosa de Segura, to play Callosa Deportiva “B”.

Callosa’s stadium was a new or fairly new ground, with what looked like newly painted Astroturf, and even had an electronic scoreboard. Alongside the main pitch was a smaller equally new pitch being used for a veteran’s 5 – a – side game. In the entrance was a newly equipped bar, with a large patio bearing a bouncy castle for the children. A truly pleasant surroundings under a nearby small mountain.

The game was frenetic from the start all the action taking place in the Callosa half of the ground. This pace continued throughout the game. A foul in the half circle of the Callosa penalty box, resulted in a fine strike by Dani, straight into the bottom right corner of the Callosa goal. After 14 min’s, 1 – 0 to Monte. No change during the second half, Monte still dominating the game.

Twenty minutes into the second half, from a corner Dani scored his second goal with a fierce-some header, over the head of the Callosa goalkeeper. Almost immediately, Wallace hit the underside of the Callosa goal with a brilliant header. Then Dani did the same a few minutes later into the right side upright’s corner.

Jonhi came on as a substitute, and

within 5 min’s he volleyed a shot straight at the Callosa goal after the goalkeeper had failed to hold onto another shot at goal. Then Carlos sent over a pass from the right hand side in front of the goal narrowly missed by Wallace. Monte’s passing was awesome with very few mistakes. The passes were swift and sure in midfield and defence, constantly searching for Carlos, Dani, or Wallace.

Monte spent probably 80% of the game in the Callosa half. They had at least 10 corners to Callosa’s 2. Callosa only had one direct shot at goal.

The game was constant with no players needing a rendezvous with their respective trainers. There were no bookings, repeat, there were no bookings. The game finished on time. A resounding 3 – 0 win for Monte.

Torrevieja's three new signings

The Habaneras Commercial Centre welcomed CD Torrevieja's three new signings on Thursday evening. The three players, Rubén Suarez, Javi Selvas and Rafa Gómez were joined by the Councillor for Youth and Sports, Pablo Samper, CD Torrevieja Club President Vicente Boix, Director of Football, Jonathan Risueño, representatives from the Habaneras Commercial Centre and TKO Teddy.

Dozens of local football supporters, members of the Torry Army and many a curious onlooker, stopped by for the presentation. Rubén Suarez and Javi Selvas, both veteran players, have just been released by Castelon, due to the team needing to rid themselves of squad players to make way for new strikers.

Former Golden Boots winner Rafa Gómez returns to Torrevieja. He was not attached

to any other club, having been on the market for a new club for the season.

All three players noted their confidence in both the club and management and the hope that the club will be playing for promotion this season despite scoring few goals this year and getting off to a poor start to the season.

As it happened, Torry were unlucky to lose at home one nil on Sunday to Castelon, despite having about 70% of possession. It seems the team are still shy about taking a shot at goal, while both teams did have to clear off the line on Sunday.

The new signings couldn't have come sooner for Torrevieja as they still sit in the bottom half of the table. Presently they sit in 14th place but just nine points away from a playoff place, so the season is far but lost at this early stage of the season.
