Hollywood sings Among winners of this year’s Princess of Asturias Awards is American film director Francis Ford Coppola who has a long list of popular films to his name with The Godfather films to the fore. But he has others that won many awards including Finian’s Rainbow, Patton, American Graffiti, Great Gatsby, Cotton Club, The Rainmaker and Apocalypse Now. One thing they all have in common is that their musical scores have all been wonderful as he is aware that people will carry music in their hearts. Shani Ormiston has graced the front page of The Coastrider before and I'm sure it won't be the last time. She is one of the many composers who are looking to the annual Hollywood Media Music Awards held this month. This is a celebration of music in film, TV, video games, commercials and trailers and has become one of the better predictors of the best original score and best original song Golden Globe and Oscar categories. Strong competition. Songs by Sam Smith, Jennifer Lopez, Brian Wilson, Lady Gaga and Diane Warren and scores by Carter Burwell, Danny Elfman and the still-Oscarless Thomas Newman are among the nominees for the sixth annual Hollywood Music in Media Awards, the only awards show

specifically devoted to the celebration of music in visual media - film, TV, video games, commercials and trailers. Winners will be revealed during a ceremony at The Fonda Theatre in Hollywood on November 11th. The five nominees for song (feature film) are "I'll See You in My Dreams," written and preformed by Keegan DeWitt for the film of the same name; "One Kind of Love," Wilson's original song for the film about his life, Love & Mercy; "See You Again," Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth's chart-topping number from Furious 7 that was written by Andrew Cedar, Justin Franks, Cameron Thomaz and Puth; "Take Care of You," No Escape's tune by Jim James; and "Writing on the Wall," which Smith wrote

with Newman and performs in the upcoming Bond film, Spectre. So it is top class contenders in this years HMMA listings. An advisory board and selection committee including journalists, music executives, songwriters and composers determines HMMA nominees. Selected members of the Society of Composers & Lyricists, the TV Academy, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ music branch, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and

performing-rights organizations, as well as filmmusic journalists and music executives choose winners. So for many individual artists and composers there is anticipation that one of their compositions will be a winner and attract the attention of film producers like Coppola. Two of the Oscar nominees for Best Original Song, "Lost Stars" (Begin Again) written by Gregg Alexander & Danielle Brisebois and "Everything is Awesome" (The Lego Movie) written by Shawn Patterson, had both been won at the previous Hollywood Music In Media Awards. Although the majority of nominees are from U.S.A. among the nominations are many from Spain, including Shani Ormiston of Torrevieja. In the past a winning instrumental composition was by a friend of Shani’s, Jaime Helios, who accompanied her at the Torrevieja Municipal Theatre when she presented one of her own CD’ s. Since then Jaime has gone on to provide music for short films. Shani’s nomination of her

song “Brave” this year is not the first time that it has attracted the attention of the judges and she was surprised to see it once again in the list of nominees. Shani is one of those Indie performers who are not tied down by a recording company or agent, preferring to do her own thing. This has its advantages and disadvantages, but for most Indie performers they prefer the ability to do what they want and when they want, without the pressure of outside agencies. Music falls into a variety of categories including genres such as Contemporary, classical, instrumental, jazz, pop and world. Shani’s song this year “Brave” in Adult Contemporary has already won accolades and features in her latest English CD “Once Upon a Time” in its original English version with an extra track of it in Spanish. It is a positive theme of the need to pick oneself up and get on with life and be courageous and brave. Here is wishing Shani lots of luck with this terrific bit of music and song.

5,000 visitors and 500 vehicles on display Hats Off to the organisers of the III Solidarity Exhibition of Classic Cars, Exotic Sports Cars, Motorcycles and Trucks that was held on Sunday, 25th October, 2015 in Almoradi. In a word, 'Impressive'. It was an impressive display of not only cars, bikes and trucks but especially of solidarity and no other one day show in the region attracts such a cross section of the community for an automotive event. The aim of the meeting was to raise funds for Nadia, a young woman suffering from a rare disease that requires very expensive treatment and requires her travelling abroad every year to try and improve her condition. Nadia arrived at the show around 11.00 and was escorted through the streets accompanied by a Vega Baja Band, clapping and cheering from everyone at the event, as she was pushed towards the staging area, to take pride and place at the head of the event. The exhibition grows every year. The first

edition had 1,500 visitors, the second about 2,800 and this year it exceeded all expectations with over 5,000 visitors, judging by those who participated in the displays, bought food and drink and supported the event n many other ways. The event was organized by three companies: Talleres Virauto, Amix Talleres Virauto, Amix and Desguaces Mora scrap yards.

Zuiderdam visits Alicante Holland America Line's Zuiderdam made its first visit to the port of Alicante last week. The Zuiderdam docked at Pier 14, next to the cruise terminal, at 07:30 h. from the port of Palma de Mallorca, with 2,070 passengers and a crew of 929 people. During the visit of the cruise ship the traditional exchange of gifts to commemorate the first arrival at Alicante port took place. The sales manager of the Port Authority, Luis López handed the captain of the cruise ship a memory of the event. The ceremony was accompanied among others by the Provincial Chief of the National Police: Jefe Provincial de la Policía Nacional, José Javier Cuasante López, the Teniente of the Guardia Civil, Jesús Valcárcel Abad, and the chief of operations for the Costablanca Portuaria, Francesco Balbi. In somewhat amusing fashion, many Spanish websites just copied and pasted information from one site to another with possibly the mother site being www.laverdad.es. Jumping on the cut and paste bandwagon were: www.alicantepress.com, www.diarioclubsantjoan.com, www.veintepies.com, www.facebook.com/AlicanteActualidad, www.puertoalicante.com, media.nautaliaviajes.com and www.terminalcrucerosalicante.com to name but a few. However, the source of the poor information possibly comes from the Port of Alicante themselves, in that although their brief Press Release does refer to the

ship correctly, their photos all state the ship is called the Zuiderman. Say no more. MS Zuiderdam is a Vista class cruise ship owned and operated by Holland America Line (HAL). It is the lead ship of the Vista class vessels, so named for the extensive use of glass in their superstructure, and is sister to three other HAL ships, Oosterdam, Westerdam, and Noordam. The prefixes of the four ships' names represent the four directions of the compass in Dutch. The ship shares similar exterior dimensions with Carnival Cruise Lines' and Costa Cruises' Spirit Class. Cunard Line's Queen Victoria is an enlarged version of the same design, as is HAL's Signature Class. The Zuiderdam weighs in at 81,769 GT, is 291 metres (954.7 ft) long with a beam of 32 m (105.0 ft) and a height of 57.83 m (189.73 ft) keel to funnel top with a draught of 7.80 metres (25.59 ft). The ship can cruise at 24 knots (44 km/h; 28 mph) (maximum), with a typical passenger count of 1,916 passengers and 2,272 passengers maximum when all berths are filled. Having been dogged with operational issues for the last number of years, The Port of Alicante, the main logistical platform in the province of Alicante, say they are facing the future safe in the knowledge that it is an essential instrument to relaunch Alicante’s economy in the new approaching global order. The potential offered by the Port of Alicante is based on its geographical location, since its area of influence encompasses major towns and cities such as Alicante, Elche, Murcia and Albacete, even reaching as far as Madrid through the industrial areas of El Vinalopó. The strength of business in this area is based on an optimal transport infrastructure: port, motorways, roads and airport, boosting its export capacity and tradition in commerce. However, the commitment of the Alicante Port Authority does not focus solely on the development and management of logistical infrastructures; it is also committed to public, social and economic institutions to introduce the strategic changes required, thereby

encouraging new companies to set up within its sphere of influence. The Port Authority is currently working to define and develop a new port model, a goal that runs parallel to the logistical strategy for the Region of Valencia. The adaptation of existing infrastructures and launch of the new southern basin will contribute to greater commercial specialisation, which must be compatible with installations that respect the environment and increase the value of freight. The planned commercial port has a maximum capacity of around 12 million tonnes, a direct connection to the motorway and railway networks, a modern TECO terminal right by the quayside and a general freight terminal run by ADIF. Furthermore, it has a Border Inspection Point (BIP) and another for imports managed by SOIVRE. The cruiser basin receives traffic of 70 ships/year, with sufficient depth and capacity for liners up to 350 long. It has its own modern and elegant marina. The use of the port as an area for recreational activity and water sports is the city’s maximum reference point. The Port of Alicante has been chosen as the permanent headquarters for the Volvo Ocean Race until the 20172018 edition. The recreational basin has space for up to 2,300 moorings, which will soon be extended to include mega yachts. All these actions will be carried out without forgetting the necessary port-city integration, and improvements are already being made to the outskirts of the city.

Town Hall to be expanded Torrevieja's Town Hall is shortly to be expanded. The tender from the company Initiatives and Civil Engineering Construction (INCOC SL) has been awarded the contract for the expansion of City Hall for a proposed 312,211€. It's not a new concept as the idea was first planned prior to Spain's financial crisis by the Partido Popular with the plan being taken further by the pentapartito with the budget afforded to them by the PP after the last election. The main objective of the contract is to add more space for municipal offices and save on rental of premises, which now house municipal services, and according to the pentapartito cost at least 200,000€ per year.

The work will take place on the ground floor next to the current Town Hall building in Maldonado Street, opposite the Plaza de la Constitution. The hiring of a technician and architect for the work will cost 32,000€. To this budget is an additional 50,000€ for the demolition of the properties that the new building will replace. The tender competition received ten proposals. At the jury meeting in July, they decided to exclude two of them due to deficiencies in the documentation submitted. The bidding price was down to 443,000€. The jury will confirm the final award in the coming weeks with the start of construction in early 2016.

More scandal and no answers

The longer the pentapartito remain in power, it seems the less answers and the more abuse of power is the order for the day. Last Thursday, the ruling pentapartito council's Mayor, Jose Manuel Dolon was lost for an answer that after four months of asking as to when work will start and finish and future plans for the park in La Siesta. He just did not have an answer to question posed of him four months ago and so the game of nonproduction continues. To date, more than 600 requests have been asked of the pentapartito council, and to date, more than 600 of these have yet to receive an answer for concerned residents. Apparently the pentapartito have decided that it's time the OARI office was reopened but once again, they have handpicked someone for the job. Unlike Jean Paul Murelo to previous occupant of the post of Director of the Foreign Residents Office, apparently the new applicate, although multilingual has no more qualifications than his leaving certificate; no official qualifications: no University or College diplomas and so the job description regarding qualifications has been dumbed down to fit in with the lesser qualifications of the candidate. We await an official announcement from the Council as we return to the better late than never scenario. And speaking of inexperience, the focus last week turned back to Councillor Africa Celdrán who even the spokesperson for the pentapartito and possible future mayor of Torrevieja Fanny Serrano called 'inexperienced'. Torrevieja opposition councillor Joaquin Albaladejo said: "The lack of answers to the questions put to pentapartito at the monthly council meeting raises the question once again as to why Councillor Africa Celdrán hired a company from Leon, in exchange for 2,000€, proving that Councillor Celdrán shows nothing but a lack of respect for Torrevejenses."

The Councillor for the Partido Popular in the City of Torrevieja, Joaquín Albaladejo, detailed the inter-party support and contradictory attitude shown by Mayor Jose Manuel Dolon, in responding evasively when writing answers to the eight questions that were raised in plenary, the Council Meeting last September. This is in relation to the scandal of the issuing of a contract for the publication for the official magazine of the May Fair, in exchange for 2,000€, while neither the Mayor, Councillor Celdrán or anyone else from the pentapartito council can explain why the contract was not put out to tender, as has always been done, and one is willing to explain why the award was given to a company that was handpicked by Councillor Celdrán. Albaladejo said that from the content of the responses, it is clear that the Mayor is obviously involved in this issue. Proof of this is that the contract was allowed to be signed officially by the pentapartito council that Jose Manuel Dolon should have overseen, along with the delegate of Celebrations, with a company from Leon.

Albaladejo noted that apparently the Mayor and President of the Corporation, does not know who made the document when is signed and by Councillor Celdrán, using official paper of the City of Torrevieja. Thus, this undermines the Spokesperson for the pentapartito, Councillor Fanny Serrano in that she tried to justify the existence of this unlawful action of taking 2,000€ for the award of a contract, on the alleged incompetence and inexperience of the Councillor of Celebrations. Similarly, when Serrano was asked the direct question, the response was a terse "No" to the question of whether there is any administrative activity in the City Council, which endorses a firm handpicked by a Councillor to sign a contract on behalf of the City of Torrevieja, instead of using a local company, but choosing a company from Leon. Thus the Councillor incurs a position of insurmountable contradiction. Albaladejo noted that; “If the Mayor says that there was no administrative activity to endorse the outrageous act of Celdrán, one cannot clean up the situation regarding possible civil and criminal liabilities, for fraudulent use of the Status of Alderman and image of City Hall, on behalf of a company outside in our town. This shows that in order to remain as Mayor for Torrevieja, he needs to show why he is willing to swallow all the illegalities and incompetence of the council who have positioned him as President of the Corporation. Finally, Albaladejo announced that the Partido Popular will incorporate the content of these evasive answers, as part of a court action in relation to this matter. At present, a company from Leon, 800 kilometres away from the City of Salt, has been chosen to market a magazine in Torrevieja. At present they are the only company that has a contract with the city of Torrevieja.

Voting shambles – Mayor of Orihuela promises to take action “Voting shambles”, was a description of voter experience in the municipal elections in Orihuela on 24 May. There was indignation that deliberate confusion and even manipulation of voting districts, had been used by members of the previous government to frustrate voters in Orihuela Costa. At the time of the last local elections, changes were made to the location of polling stations, causing confusion and obliging some voters, for example those living in Playa Flamenca, to travel up to 6 kilometres to vote in the little known and badly signposted Reading Point. This contributed to a low level of voter participation in Orihuela Costa. These practices were undemocratic and obstructed the exercise of the right to vote of hundreds of Orihuela Costa residents and were certainly sufficient to deny C.L.A.R.O. continued representation in the Council. The practices were denounced by C.L.A.R.O. at the time and were fully

documented in a complaint made to the new Mayor of Orihuela. He has now replied to the President of C.L.A.R.O. stating that after consulting the electoral authorities (Censo Electoral), it has been confirmed that the Town Hall is able to increase the number of polling stations to reduce the distances voters have to travel to vote, provided that the polling stations are located in premises owned by the Town Hall to ensure that they are not changed from one election to another which it is acknowledged causes confusion. The Mayor has promised to introduce changes which will ensure compliance with the principles laid down by the electoral authorities when they have publicly owned premises. C.L.A.R.O. welcomes this commitment by the new Popular Party Mayor of Orihuela. The indignation felt after the local elections in May was justified. It should be possible to introduce these changes and facilitate voting by Spanish

citizens as soon as the national elections to be held in December. Public premises exist, prominently and conveniently located in schools or the municipal Sports Centre, for example, to ensure that voters do not have to travel unreasonable distances. By the time of the next municipal and European Parliament elections the changes can certainly be made to ensure that obstacles to voting of both Spanish and non-Spanish EU residents can no longer be imposed. The Mayor’s

commitment should also ensure that the out of date Spanish law which does not include the number of non-Spanish EU voters in the calculation of the number of polling stations created, is not applied again to reduce the number of polling stations in Orihuela Costa and to obstruct the democratic rights of residents to vote to defend their interests in determining the composition of the municipal government. Remember: No Vote No Voice.

Formby's Lost Love Ukulele legend George Formby's fiancée Pat Howson's life story is told for the first time by author Andrew Atkinson in: 'Formby's Lost Love'. Pat Howson, who resided in Andrew's home City of Preston, was engaged to Formby in 1961, just weeks after the death of his wife Beryl. Formby had known Pat since the age of eight, having bought luxury Rolls Royce and Bentley cars from her dad Fred Howson, general manager of Loxhams Car Showroom, Preston, Lancashire. Investigative journalism by Andrew has uncovered a plethora of untold revelations about Pat Howson, and that of her time with Formby, who was set to marry Pat in 1961, only to be thwarted by a fatal heart attack. Andrew has visited the house in Penwortham, Preston, Lancashire, and had access to legal documents, where Formby suffered a heart attack; along with the Georgian Mansion in Lea, Preston, that Pat and Formby had purchased, to be their wedded home. Andrew has also had access to Pat Howson’s final home abode – a flat in Penwortham – before she entered a Nursing Home, after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer. 'Formby's Lost Love' features interviews with Pat Howson’s former golf colleagues; her school years, the Preston schools she taught RE at; the Parish Church where she worshipped (and had arranged Formby’s funeral); her time serving in the WRENS; the Church where George and Pat were to get married; along with the Nursing Home where she tragically died in 1971, aged 46. ‘Formby’s Lost Love’ features ‘Exclusive’ interviews undertaken by Andrew Atkinson with her close friends – during the time that Pat and George were engaged, along with an Exclusive

interview with Pat Howson’s Solicitor, during her final year, leading up to her death. “The book ‘Formby’s Lost Love’ has received a high volume of interest, in both the UK and in Spain; being featured by the BBC, local radio and regional newspapers, in Lancashire and on the Costa Blanca. “The sad, tearful, and heart-breaking life-story of Pat Howson has never been published. ‘Formby’s Lost Love’ will reveal it all,” said Andrew, who has a property in Los Montesinos, Alicante, Spain. Torrevieja's Walking Dead Halloween Night saw La Mata and Torrevieja streets filled with the living dead, as the city became the dead centre for Survival Zombie. In total, around 1,500 Zombie Survival contestants roamed the streets of Torrevieja, which became the zombie capital of Halloween 2015. The city was filled with zombies in the scariest night of the year, and overall, the absolute survival winners were torrevejenses: Adrian Ballester Lozano, Jose Antonio Martinez Verdugo, Alejandro Sanchez and Otilia Hoz. Torrevieja woke up this morning with the hangover from a night of mystery, dark characters and a great invasion of the undead thanks to Zombie Survival game, organized by the company Real World Games, the scariest night of the year. In total, 1,500 participants underwent this survival game, - a mixture of gymkhana and 'tag', whose contestants had to overcome a plot full of intrigue in 12 scenes spread throughout the city. “We had an issue with the many zombies at the start,” said the director of Real World Games (WRG), Diego de la Concepción, who signed up about 100 players who wanted to live this Halloween 'zombified'. This peculiarity influenced the 'high mortality' of the game, because very few people were able to escape the clutches of zombies in this mysterious night '. The city was so eager for this to be held here that we could not refuse it, "said the director of WRG to the media. Zombie Survival had proposed to take the game to several cities, but finally decided to concentrate on

Torrevieja due to the willingness of the council who wanted to offer a night of alternative entertainment, noted de la Concepción. Therefore, World Real Games came to Torrevieja with a special edition of the game of survival offering a plot full of demons from the opening scene in the that made over 3,000 litres of artificial blood by way of rain in the Eras de la Sal. “Nobody expected this because we had not done so before, but the result has been great: it was impossible not to think of films like Carrie or Blade with that staging being so bloody,” he added, as the creator of the game. Throughout the night, the players, tried to uncover and find clues to the plot that was developed over 12 scenes spread throughout the city with great success. As embodied in the vicinity of the beach, some participants had to be marked with artificial blood for his companions to continue competing. However, the submarine developed in the s-61, in which the leaders of the participating teams had to dive and follow the instructions on the protection forces WRG. “It's been amazing to have the opportunity to live this scene here,”

said Monica Perez, one of the participants, on leaving the submarine. Living through the 'plot' in this scenario, and after passing the test of discipline with the military resulted in a reward, although not everyone got to go down to the submarine and enjoy this event with such realism for parts of actors' he said. Another participant, Manuel Gomez stressed however the spectacular final scene, that took place at 7.00am near the Lighthouse. “I could not believe that this game could be played with all these special effects of a plot so well defined and entertaining during the eight hours that the game lasted," added Gomez, who had travelled from Zaragoza to enjoy this special Halloween in Torrevieja. Over 1,000 zombies were still to be found on the streets at the end of the night as more people than expected decided late into the night, to join in the fun and become zombies and be makeup by the staff of WRG. “People likes to lick the blood with their prosthesis on and have a good memory of blood tonight," said Diego de la Concepción. Zombie Survival is a real game that combines the traditional gymkhana game plus tag or catch, a sort of zombie hide and seek, in which participants have to use their wits to overcome the evidence offered by each of the scenes that make up the strategy of the night while escaping the clutches of zombies while not being caught and therefore removed from the game and turned into undead.

Get down and boogie at the Old School Disco

Some say our schooldays are the best time of our lives and others disagree. One aspect of our school days that we will all remember, like it was yesterday, were the school dinners. We ‘enjoyed’ lumpy mashed potatoes, the darkest green cabbage piled on our plates like Mount Everest, butter beans three times a week, thick yellow custard and so many more culinary delights we may prefer to put to the back of our minds. We all had great fun in the playground kicking a ball, throwing two balls up against a wall, hopping around on one leg playing hopscotch or maybe having a sneaky puff on a Woodbine behind the bike shed! You are all invited to re-live these magical moments at Reflections Restaurant and Bar, Calle Aviles, San Luis at a special event that has been organised by the guys from The Cucaracha Club film. On Thursday 19th November at 7.30pm, the classroom doors will be flung open and memories of the School Disco will come flooding back as you enter into days long past. Siesta Productions, responsible for the making of the film The Cucaracha Club in and around Torrevieja, play host to an Old School Disco.

And it's not just the great music from your youth but you'll be taken back all those years with a two course menu that includes a choice of your favourite’s sausages, fish fingers or cheese burgers and for pud a choice of rice pudding with cinnamon or apple crumble. Livening the evening up, TKO's Keith Nicol will be spinning the discs and playing all the ’haunting melodies’ of the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and for the really young 40 somethings, maybe even a few from the 80's. Remember when Bill Haley hit us like a rocket, Cliff and Elvis swivelled their hips, Dusty, Lulu and Cilla gave us the voices and glamour of the swinging 60’s. The Beatles and Rolling Stones fought it out at the top of the charts while the Monkees took over TV screens every weekend, while Thursday nights were set aside for Top of the Pops and we all listened to Radio Caroline, Luxembourg 208 and Radio London, before and after BBC Radio One hit the airwaves in 1967. Have some fun with table games like we did as kids. There will be a raffle with the proceeds going to charity and a prize for the best, or worst dressed, school kid. Or be a rebel and come as your favourite pop star or band:

Bay City Rollers, Elvis, Showaddywaddy, Mud, Sweet, Slade, Wizzard, T-Rex or maybe you were a teddy boy, a surfer girl, a punk rocker. Use your imagination and have a little fun by joining in the fun. All this fun and food: all much improved from our school days is waiting for you at Reflections on November 19th. So get your tickets now. They are priced at just 12.50€ from Reflections or book your place by phoning 603 344 717 or 688 387 490.

18 years asked for the stash of 465 kilos of 'coke'

The prosecution has asked for 18 years in prison for a father and son drug smuggling team. They were discovered on a motor sailboat, just ten meters long that was sailing off the coast of Pilar de la Horadada, near the guard post of the Guardia Civil in the town. The motor yacht was loaded with the second largest stash of cocaine that has ever arrived in the province. On the afternoon of January 28 this year, the crew of the yacht, a father and son, both of Spanish nationality, and 70 and 43 years old respectively, were arrested with 465 kilograms of the drug, whose purity was located near the 80%. The suspected drug traffickers are awaiting trial in the Seventh Section of the Provincial Court, based in Elche. The Public Prosecution has asked for a sentence of nine years imprisonment for each of them on charges for crimes against public health. The defendants must also cope with heavy fines due to the high value of the drug, estimated at 16 million euros on the black market. The strange vessel movements attracted the attention of some agents of the Guardia Civil, who were prepared for the arrival of the boat when it docked in the Alicante coastal town of Pilar de la

Horadada. Apparently, the economic problems of the sailors from Guardamar del Segura, turned them into suspected drug traffickers. Once on board, the agents asked for the registration of their small ship but after a short search they confirmed their suspicions and inside they found 13 perfectly wrapped bales with the prohibited substance. The Father and son prisoners are accused of being part of an international network and the agents involved in discovering the drugs, also impounded the boat and two cars. The court in Orihuela agreed to their bail a few weeks ago. The owner of the sailboat, the father, is an elderly man of 70. In a joint operation, agents of the Guardia Civil, the National Police and the Tax Office have arrested three individuals that are allegedly responsible for obtaining the vessels used for caches of drugs and to provide the technical means and the necessary infrastructure to transport and hide merchandise to make huge profits. Researchers are part of the anti-drug specialists of the Security Forces, such as Edoa Civil Guard and National Police UDYCO, who after months of investigation unravelled the 'modus operandi' of the organization. To move the drugs from one place to another, members of the network made use of pleasure boats under local crews, those who knew the terrain, to go to meet larger mother ships off the coast of Alicante. According to sources from the Alicante prosecutor, of the latter arrested, two of Spanish nationality and a third born in Montenegro, must be judged separately from the fishermen who were captured in the first phase of the investigation.

Who needs a taxi when you have an official car? Last week the Partitdo Popular claimed that members of the pentapartito council were using the official car to drive around relatives of local government councillors. Albaladejo says the mayor recognizes this is going on in response to a question from the PP in the council meeting. The Popular Party councillor Joaquín Albaladejo has denounced the use of an official car by the City council of the municipal government "to transport family". The opposition councillor said that for this reason he has asked several questions of the Mayor of Torrevieja, Jose Manuel Dolon, who according to Albaladejo "has admitted this use in his written response with a brief 'yes'." Albaladejo also confirmed that in response to another question on the subject made to the mayor of details that "insurance covers vehicle's occupants." Albaladejo urged the Mayor to "provide the name of the councillor who has used the official car and why, when there are children who go to school that have to walk by themselves to school because you will not give aid to school

transport in advance and when on Thursday afternoon this almost causes an accident because of these causes on Avda. Dauphine Viudes "occurs. The Mayor did not elaborate on the use of the municipal vehicle, saying that "it is not I who is responsible for doing this nor Councillor Alejandro Blanco or Pablo Samper,” thus removing any suspicions about the municipal group of Torrevieja Dreams. Albaladejo said that with the situation that has occurred, "the mayor has the opportunity to explain the circumstances surrounding this use" and recalled that at the beginning of this municipal mandate "the mayor, José Manuel Dolon announced the opening of a logbook for the use of official cars, their motives and people who made use of them, in order to make it available to all citizens.” Joaquín Albaladejo, said he expected a ruling on the matter as soon as possible.

Spanish News Bodies of missing Spanish airmen UK sailor rescued after found in sunken helicopter cockpit drama off Spanish coast 10

After a week-long search, divers have found the bodies of the three airmen who went missing after their Spanish Air Force helicopter crashed over the Atlantic Ocean, off the northern African coast. Defense Minister Pedro Morenés met with the families of the crew members on Thursday evening to confirm their deaths. A military judge has certified that all three bodies are inside the cockpit, based on a divers’ inspection of the wreck 40 meters under the sea. After meeting with relatives of Captain José Morales Rodríguez, Lieutenant Saúl López Quesada and Sergeant Jhonander Ojeda at the Gando airbase on the Canary Island of Gran Canaria, the defense minister gave a brief press conference where no questions were taken. The Maritime Search and Rescue AS332 Super Puma helicopter went down last Thursday approximately 74 kilometers off the coast of Western Sahara after it lost contact with air traffic control. The crew from the Air Force’s 802 Squadron

were flying back to the airbase from Dakar, where they were helping train Senegalese forces in air rescue missions. Earlier this week, Defense Minister Pedro Morenés had said that the government was not ruling out any theories about the fate of the three crew members, after the father of one of the men said he believed they might have been kidnapped. Before that, Moroccan authorities had reported that the three men had been rescued by a fishing vessel and were on their way to the nearest port. The Spanish defense minister released this information, which later turned out to be inaccurate. The Moroccan government has blamed the Senegalese navy for the erroneous report. Diving teams finally located the cockpit on Wednesday, after sharpshooters were sent out to help them control the large amount of sharks in the waters. The wreck was found thanks to the sonar technology on the minesweepers Turia and Júcar. Minister Morenés said that the priority now was “recovering the bodies and bringing them aboard the [military ship] Rayo.” But he warned that “the terrible weather conditions in the area” and the need to prioritize the safety of the rescue teams could delay the recovery. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy expressed his condolences to the crew’s families and colleagues via his Twitter account.

A British sailor has been rescued after his yacht began taking on water off the Spanish coast. Alex Thomson, from Gosport, Hampshire, and co-skipper Guillermo Altadill, were taken by helicopter off the Hugo Boss yacht 82 nautical miles from the Spanish coast during the Transat Jacques Vabre race from Le Havre, France, to South America. The Spanish coastguard was alerted after the pair set off their emergency beacon. They were located by helicopter which then brought them back to land. A spokesman for their team said: "Hugo Boss incurred some structural damage earlier this week forcing Alex and Guillermo to stop racing. "The skippers had made a repair and were on route to A

Coruna, where the technical team were waiting to meet them. "After sailing for a period of 36 hours in high seas and strong winds, the structure of the boat deteriorated further and the boat started to take on water and sink. "The technical team are in A Coruna, Spain awaiting further information from the coastguard." Stewart Hosford, managing director of Alex Thomson Racing, said: "Our first concern is with Alex and Guillermo and when they are safely on the ground we will address the situation with our IMOCA 60 and begin the salvage process. "We are grateful for the swift response from the rescue services in this situation."

Spanish coast guard abandons search for 35 missing refugees "The search has ended and it will not be resumed," a coast guard spokeswoman said, a day after rescuers plucked 15 migrants alive from the remains of the boat and found the bodies of four others. The coastguard began looking for the stricken boat after receiving a call on Wednesday from an NGO based in Morocco which warned that a vessel loaded with migrants had departed from a beach near Al Hoceima. A coastguard vessel spotted the troubled boat just after midday on Thursday, some 39 nautical miles (72 kilometres) northwest of the town of Al Hoceima in northern Morocco. Two women and 13 men were clinging to what was left of the boat, which had lost its hull. Some of the migrants did not have life jackets. The 15 rescued migrants, who were transported by the coastguard ship to the southern Spanish port of Malaga, said there had been 39 other people on board who fell overboard. It is the most serious migrant boat accident off the coast of Spain this year and it came as at least 17 children and nine adults drowned when three boats sank en route from Turkey to Greece. The migrants on the boat were from the Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Mali, Guinea and Cameroon, said Helena Maleno of the NGO which first sounded the alarm, Caminando Fronteras. A total of 12 women were on board the boat, including two who were pregnant and who are

among the missing, she added. "We learned of the departure of the boat because we received calls from family members of those on board," Maleno told AFP. The 15 surviving migrants were presented before a judge on Friday to begin the deportation from Spain without taking into account that "they just had a huge shock," she added. "They are people who have been displaced due to tragedy and conflict. They are not met with the respect of international conventions," said Maleno. "If they had been French victims of a bus accident in Spain, they would not be treated like this." This year alone, more than 3,000 people have died while trying to make the perilous journey to Europe across the Mediterranean. More than half a million people have made the voyage in Europe's worst migration crisis since World War II, most to Greece and Italy.

Spanish parents found guilty of murdering their adopted daughter One of the most closely followed criminal trials in Spain of recent years ended on Friday with the jury unanimously deciding that both parents of a 12-year-old girl, who was found strangled to death two years ago, are guilty of her murder. The girl, named Asunta, was well known in the city of Santiago de Compostela, having been featured in the media as the first Chinese child to be adopted by Galician parents. But the life of an intelligent and lively child was cut short when her body was found on a forest trail at 1am on September 22, 2013. Asunta’s middle-class parents reported their daughter missing a few hours before she was found, but the jury agreed with prosecutors that the divorced couple had in fact conspired together to do away with their daughter and attempt to make it look like a random act of violence. Asunta’s mother, Rosario Porto, a lawyer who had served as the honorary French consul in Galicia, had long suffered from depression and told a psychiatrist in 2009 that the child “bothered her”. Ms Porto maintained custody of the child, but her former husband, Alfonso Basterra, lived close by and Asunta had slept at the unemployed journalist’s apartment on Friday September 20, 2013. On the Saturday, the father cooked

mushrooms for lunch for the whole family, the moment at which the prosecution argued the girl was given 27 one-milligram tablets of Orfidal, a brand name for the tranquiliser lorazepam for which Ms Porto had a prescription. In fact, autopsy tests revealed that the girl had been taking quantities of lorazepam for months, and her violin teacher told the court that one day two months before her death Asunta had been woozy and incapable of playing her instrument. She complained of being made to take “white powders” for an allergic condition. The teacher testified that the girl had said: “I don’t have

an allergy and no one will tell me what is going on”. Ms Porto originally told investigators that after leaving Mr Basterra’s apartment, she had gone to her own flat and spent the rest of the day there with her daughter. But CCTV footage showed her driving off that afternoon with Asunta in her car, as well as a witness who saw her leaving the country house she owned that evening. The prosecution said that Ms Porto had strangled the girl once she was unable to resist due to the effects of the drug, before dumping the body, which was found with a length of rope identical to rope found at the country house. The prosecution could not be sure that Mr Basterra had left his house to assist in the actual killing but he was found guilty by the jury for his role in drugging the girl. Mr Basterra’s computer was revealed to contain photographs of his daughter in a risqué bodice and his DNA “from a bodily fluid other than semen” was found on her underwear. Ms Porto claimed that a few months before Asunta's death she had found an intruder attacking the child in her bedroom one night, but the man ran off when she challenged him. The jury said the two had displayed malice aforethought and recommended the maximum sentence possible, which could be up to 20 years.

Club Torrevieja Clasicos words of advice by David Hudson I have been dealing with foreigners problems on driving in Spain since 2003. Then in 2007 I formed the first English speaking Classic Club in this area and for 4 years I ran an Annual Drivers Awareness Campaign that was launched by Annual Encuentro of Classic Cars in the Torrevieja Port which Spanish Clubs in the Alicante and Murcia Regions supported. A few years ago a group of us formed an Online Classic Club and using the experience in advising foreigners about the laws and driving in Spain we produced a number of information sheets on the laws and driving here aimed at visitors and nonresidents who would appreciate being kept up to date as well as providing help and advise. The only thing I felt that was needed is a simple information sheet similar to the leaflet that the AA did for it's members going abroad in the 60s that explained the main differences between the UK and Spanish Traffic laws and customs. Last October I finally completed it using the 12 years’ experience of solving problems and explaining the why. This was a huge success with many

UK visitors wanting a copy and answers also Urbanisation Presidents asked to circulate their residents which also provoked responses. Traffic fines since the crisis in Spain has increased by 87% while the Association for Traffic victims are pressuring the Director General of Trafico to do something about the worrying up turn of fatal traffic accidents in this year. The first for 10 years and though the death rate is not high the serious injuries is going up. This year the Director General has altered some of the rules and now there is a high profile in using radar checks and the stop and check of documents and testing for Alcohol and drugs. With this information plus the public feedback that I had with the launch of the information sheet an updated 2nd edition has been produced with traffic differences, weather hazards and a brief description of the Spanish Police groups. We have included some of the large information sheet here. The main aim of the club is to make visitors and non-residents stay a stress and problem free one. Those who are or want to drive their classic in Spain might be interested in our free information sheet on the laws and rules that apply to historic vehicles. With the summer season over many UK residents and holidaymakers are now heading over to the Costa Blanca for the winter sunshine. The problem for a lot of UK visitors is that many of the rules of the road appear similar to what we have in the UK and

this can cause a problem with the police through ignorance. Here is a short list of some of the differences between UK Law and Spanish Traffic law that may appear the same to you. The law does not stop at the end of the highway but includes private roads and even your driveway. A member was stopped and fined for not having their seat belt buckled up in a Supermarket car park in La Zenia. Hogging the middle lane is classed as dangerous driving and can get you a caution or a fine and the possibility of a prison sentence. Once you have overtaken you should move back into the inside lane which is one of the reasons why some Spanish drivers cut you up. The stop line means just that you must stop even if nothing is coming. This is now a criminal offence and you risk a spell in prison plus a fine. Cyclists can legally ride in twos and you must leave 1.5m clearance when overtaking. They can also ride in a peloton or group and they have priority over vehicles at unmarked crossing.

Watch your speed Now there is tolerance on speeding with 8% up to 90 and 9% over 90 kms Speed limits can change quickly even at bends and these new limit will be what your fine will be calculated on. A New law allows Municipalities to reduce speeds to 30 kph for centres and areas dangerous to cycles and pedestrians. Vehicles must be able to maintain minimum speeds to use the roads. This is normally indicated by white numbers on blue circle Advisory speed signs are white numbers on a blue square. You must carry all your documents with you all the time you do not have the option of producing them later. To safe guard your passport and driving licence you can get them legally copied by either a Notary or some Town Halls provide this service. Anyone driving your vehicle should have written permission in Spanish by

you with your DNI number and details or you can have them on your insurance as named driver which will have the details required. The recent law change means that the vehicle will be impounded which strengthens the existing rule.

Any modification for Spanish registered vehicles including a towing bar, tyre size etc. needs registering with the ITV otherwise it will fail any test or check. Trailers must have an ITV test and those over 750kg must have a separate licence plate. In Benidorm 87% of ITV failures were due to modifications. You have a maximum distance of 15 m to reverse your vehicle. It is illegal to drive more than 2 hours or 200 kms without a stop. The Yellow lines on National roads mean that it being repaired or altered and that construction vehicles may suddenly appear or that sudden change of direction or traffic control may happen. When this is finished the lines change back to white. The Vado signs mean no parking as the space has been reserved to registered vehicles.

Wearing Flip flops are covered under the safety rule Article 17 that was introduced on 14 August 2003 and covers incorrect shoes being dangerous and it can lead to a fine of 90€. You must use a registered tow truck. The ITV sticker for Spanish vehicles must be displayed on your windscreen or a fine. The ITV must be taken in the Region that the vehicle is registered in otherwise it will be illegal. These are just a few of the notes on our information sheet with more to be published next week. You can find out much more by joining us at our friendly and informal meetings on every first Saturday in the month. Bar Columbus in Torreta 2, Torrevieja from 2.30pm. Back Stage with Tony Francis Artists Direct Spain has an exciting new App that can be downloaded free. Great for bar owners to see acts, find acts with availability, request help to find acts and also for acts to keep their gig and availability dates updated at the click of a button. The App can be downloaded from the Artists Direct Spain Facebook page or the website There is a link to download or just scan the image into your smart phone and hey presto. We went back stage for a chat with Tony Francis. Tony is currently about to undertake a marathon in his home country of Ireland raising money for charity in the process. Tony describes himself as a ‘vocal entertainer’ and started in the business at the age of five, singing with his father and siblings. No stranger to the stage then. He thoroughly enjoys what he does and even if he were not an entertainer, he would still be in the business, probably managing acts in some way. Tony cites his father as one of his biggest influences and he grew up listening to a wide range of artists and styles of music, all who have influenced in some way, too many to mention. Tony says he gets an ‘exciting nervousness’ before a gig has never really suffered stage fright – the bigger the audience the better. Starting in the business at the age of 5 must mean a plethora of choice when it comes to ‘ best moments’ we

suggested and Tony says some of his best times were when he appeared in pantomimes with several celebrities including Bradley Walsh and Cannon and Ball. Surely the comedy entertainer coming out in him. Acts often say that equipment failures are some of

their worst moments and this is also the case with Tony. He remembers when the equipment failed during a show at the Weymouth Pavilion, with an audience of 500, so he had to ad-lib until the crew got the problem sorted. Tony’s advice to anyone starting out in the business is to always be yourself, unless you are a tribute act of course! We asked him if he had any interesting little titbits he could share with us. With his alluring smile and clear blue eyes he related the story of when he arrived at a venue to perform with a top comedian, the comedian was due to go on first, but suffered a severe attack of stage fright and could not go on. Tony was asked to go on in his place, as a vocalist instead of comedian, you can imagine the response! But Tony managed to win the crowd over and it all turned out OK. The comedian did eventually come on to do part of his act. Tony is available to be booked direct via the Artists Direct- Spain website and is happy to travel anywhere from Costa Blanca North to Costa Calida.

After Hours at Papillon I do most of the cooking. I like to prepare home-made dishes. I am talking mainly English, German and Spanish, although with the cosmopolitan nature of our clientele there are often other influences thrown into the mix. Thankfully they seem to appreciate the variety. What’s your favourite dish on the menu? Being from Germany I love schnitzel and we have a ‘schnitzel day’ each week. I also have a taste for good old English style fish- in- batter and chips and this is included on our menu. Favourite day of the week? I mentioned schnitzel day. This is on a Wednesday so I always look forward to that. I also like our music nights as I love all sorts of music, especially when it is live.

Tell us about yourselves My name is Andrea and I am originally from Germany. I own and run Papillon Bar & Restaurant along with my lovely staff. I have lived in Spain for 29 years. This is the third bar/restaurant I have had and, great as it has been, it will definitely be my last. Before I did all this I used to do translating for the police; Spanish – English – German. What made you open a bar? Well, apart from doing the translating, I reckon I can’t do anything else, not on a long-term basis anyway. I guess you can say I am addicted to hard work… and you certainly get plenty of that in this trade.

Where did the inspiration for the name come from? “Papillon” is a lovely word, it is French for ‘butterfly’. It just sort of flew to me… apologies for the pun, but the name just came into my head and I liked it so that is what we became. We are informally known as ‘the Most International bar’ as our clients are from so many different parts of the world. I suppose it helps that I speak a number of languages. Apart from German, English and Spanish I get by in a few others, including Dutch, French and Norwegian. Who does the cooking? And how would you describe your style?

In the winter that is normally Fridays and Saturdays. Any interesting tales? A few years ago we had a British man who came in regularly and all the other customers used to remark on how exceptionally grumpy he was. However he was not grumpy with me. We were together for a long time and although it didn’t work out in the end we are still friends to this day. Another amusing story is of a lady, I’m not sure of her nationality but we spoke in English, and she asked me what was the German word for ‘peace’, as in ‘peace after war’. I told her it was ‘Frieden’. Her next question was “So how do you say mushy peas?” You can book a table at Papillon Bar & Restaurant by calling 677 063 390 or check out their page on whatsoncostablanca.com to find out what they have going on when and see their menus.

Keep fit in autumn and winter So the clocks have gone back and months of long, dark evenings and cold weather lie ahead. But that doesn't mean you have to stay curled up on the sofa until spring. 1. Get kitted out You know the old saying: there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing. Just 25 minutes of brisk walking each day can add up to seven years to your life – and halve risk of dying from a heart attack, according to a new study presented at the European Society of Cardiology. So if a good pair of walking shoes and a waterproof jacket are all that stand between you and a longer life, it's probably time to shell out in the autumn sales. 2. Head for cover Still can't face going for a walk in the pouring rain? That's easily solved: go for a walk indoors instead. A few suggestions? Take a tip from the US and try mall-walking: you can boost your fitness and burn plenty of calories by taking a brisk walk around your nearest shopping centre. (You could even buy some new walking shoes while you're there, of course.) Or try a cultural activity: you can cover a lot of ground while taking a tour around a gallery, museum or stately home. 3. Beat the crowds Yes, it was nice to go for a refreshing swim in your local pool or head off for a coastal stroll during summertime. The only problem? Everywhere was packed. But now the kids are back at school and the tourist season has ended, pools, parks and beaches are much quieter – so you have the perfect opportunity to take full advantage of the off-peak peace. 4. Try something new Autumn gives us all a chance to discover that 'back to school' feeling – without being obliged to learn algebra or wear a horrible uniform, of course! Now's a good time to try a new indoor fitness activity – yoga, pilates, badminton, bowls or whatever you fancy – with many six-week beginners' courses starting up again after the end-of-October half-term.

Classes are also likely to be a lot less oversubscribed now than they are in January, when the 'New Year's resolution' brigade bowl up! 5. Stick at it for two months Another good reason to start a new fitness activity now, rather than waiting until the depths of winter? It takes a while to form new habits: in fact, it takes an average 66 days for a new healthy behaviour to become automatic, according to a study published in the European Journal of Social Psychology. So start going to that yoga class now, and in two months' time – when the weather's grim and light levels are at their lowest – it'll come as second nature, so you'll stick at it. 6. Give yourself a short-term incentive So it's warm and snuggly in bed – and the last thing you fancy doing is getting up to go for a swim? The trick could be to offer yourself a little postworkout treat, such as a trip to your favourite coffee shop or an indulgent hour on the sofa watching TV. Yes, keeping healthy should be incentive enough – but we're only human, after all, and research has shown we're more likely to adopt good habits when a tangible reward is dangled in front of us. For example, obese people are more motivated to lose weight when there's a cash incentive, according to a study at Carnegie Mellon

University in the US. 7. Set yourself a goal Another big incentive, of course, is to give yourself something to aim for. It could be reaching a target weight, lowering your blood pressure to a healthy level or entering an event, such as next year's Race For Life series. Whatever you choose, striving towards this goal will motivate you throughout the winter. 8. Come dancing Over the past 12 years, autumn has traditionally become the time of year when we all fantasise about discovering our inner Fred or Ginger, thanks to Strictly Come Dancing. So why not stop fantasising and actually do something about it this year? There are plenty of beginners' dance lessons in pubs, clubs and leisure centres across the UK. Whether you opt for Salsa, tap or even Zumba, it will give you a great cardiovascular workout and can help build stronger bones – and it's also a great opportunity to make new friends. 9. Make Christmas part of your workout Another incentive to keep moving is that you'll get much more done in the busy pre-Christmas period. Doing all the shopping, putting up the decorations and delivering cards and presents on foot – or by bicycle – will give you a good workout (and save you money). And, when you meet up with friends and family over the holiday period, you could suggest incorporating a walk or fun activity, such as ten-pin bowling, into the occasion, instead of sitting around indoors. 10. Up your activity levels at home Let's be realistic: despite your good intentions, chances are you'll be spending more time indoors over the next few months. However, that doesn't mean your activity levels have to drop – as long as you remember to build some incidental exercise into your day. A few tips? Use a cordless phone and stand up and walk around whenever you're on it. You could always deliberately leave it in another room so you have to hurry to answer it when it rings, too. And, if you've got a spare 10 minutes, try the British Heart Foundation's living room workout.

If you want to buy a useful new gadget for a keen cook in your life, you’ll be spoilt for choice. With such a huge variety of food processors, kettles, juicers and so on available, deciding on a gift can be far from straightforward. To make life simpler, we’ve picked five of the most invaluable bits of kitchen kit for food lovers. 1. Morphy Richards Accents Slow Cooker Slow cookers have really taken off in popularity over

the past few years, and it’s not hard to work out why: they are relatively cheap to buy, cost less than an oven to run, and they make it incredibly easy to cook delicious stews and braises. This model has a bowl that can be used on the hob to sear meat, for example, before it goes in the cooker, to add extra flavour to the finished dish. £34.99 Morphy Richards 2. Nutribullet 8-Piece Set The latest in healthy-eating technology, the Nutribullet is a high-powered smoothie maker that can turn fruit, vegetables and even nuts into nutritious drinks. Its advantage over traditional juicers is that it retains food’s fibre content rather than simply extracting the juice. Another bonus is that the Nutribullet doesn’t take up much space and is easy to clean. £79.99 Amazon 3. Heston Blumenthal Precision Kitchen Scales Accurate measurement of ingredients is a vital part of successful cooking and baking, and these scales, while not cheap, make the process simple. They weigh to half a gramme and allow you to reset the read-out to zero each time you need to add extra ingredients to your bowl.Perhaps the best thing about them is that they run on standard AAA batteries, which are much easier to get

hold of than the watch-style batteries required by most other scales £29 Amazon 4. Hotpoint Multi-Functional Hand Blender Although it’s described as a hand blender, this is really a small, extremely versatile food processor. It comes with a large and small bowl, and can be used for slicing, grating and chopping – as well as for whisking and liquidising with the attachments included. Compared with a full-size processor, it’s much more light and manoeuvrable and stores away very neatly: ideal for kitchens where space is at a premium. £54 Amazon 5. Russell Hobbs 20160 Illumina Kettle If you thought a kettle was a device for boiling water, think again. Some beverages work better with water that is heated to slightly less than 100 degrees C – so while normal tea is best made with water at its highest temperature, green tea should be brewed with water at 70 degrees C, while fresh coffee is thought to taste better if it starts at 90 degrees C.This kettle is one of several models that let users set their desired temperature, and its stainless steel finish looks pretty good too. £39.99 Amazon

Health Benefits of Coffee Did you know that coffee can actually do a lot more than simply give you a boost in the morning? There are actually a number of health benefits to drinking coffee regularly. So, before you make the switch to herbal tea, read on to learn more about what coffee can do for you and your body. Reduced Gall Stones The Harvard School of Public Health recently published a study indicating that drinking caffeinated coffee on a regular basis can dramatically decrease the incidence of gall bladder disease and gall stones in both women and men. Reduced Risk for Alzheimer's Disease Two studies, one published in the European Journal of Neurology, have shown that individuals who drank about 2 cups of caffeinated coffee per day were less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease than individuals who drank no coffee or a small to moderate amount. Reduced Risk for Parkinson's Disease Studies have shown that the amount of coffee and caffeine consumed could be inversely related to an individual's likelihood of contracting Parkinson's disease. This means the more coffee you drink, the lower

your chances are for developing the disease. Antioxidants and Cancer-Fighting Properties Coffee is a powerful source of antioxidants - agents that combat cancer-causing free radicals. Coffee is chock full of the compound methylpyridinium, which can't be found in many other food items and not at the level available in coffee. You can get antioxidants from both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee as long as the beans are sufficiently roasted.

Increased Cognitive Ability Studies have shown that regular coffee drinkers frequently score significantly higher on cognitive ability tests, spatial awareness exams, IQ tests, and short term memory studies. The effects of coffee on an individual's cognitive ability appeared to be more pronounced in elderly study participants and women. Bowel Stimulation Coffee is a stimulant and also a laxative. Some alternative practitioners even prescribe coffee enemas to stimulate the lower colon. However, because coffee is also a diuretic, it can cause constipation in some individuals. Reduced Risk for Gout A large study of over 45,000 men that was conducted over a 12-year period showed the amount of coffee consumed was inversely related to their risk or likelihood of developing gout. Remember, everything should be practiced in moderation, and health concerns should always be discussed with a medical professional. So, while a moderate amount of coffee has its benefit, an excessive amount can also cause problems. Heavy coffee drinking can lead to irritability, anxiety, sleep deprivation, cardiovascular problems and higher cholesterol levels.

Home Cardio Workouts – Get in Shape, Lose Some Weight Home cardio workouts are one of the most popular ways to get in shape and lose weight. It’s easy to do a cardio workout at home because you don’t need a lot of expensive gear. You simply need to be able to work out at a pace that gets your blood pumping and increases your heart rate. To see clear results such as improved muscle tone and reduced body weight, you’ll need to work up to doing cardio 3-5 times a week for at least a half hour each session. Once you’ve stuck with it for a few months, you’ll begin to reap substantial benefits, including: • A stronger heart • Stronger lungs with more lung capacity • Increased muscle • Reduced fat • More energy • Better sleep • A faster metabolism • Less stress Cardio workouts raise your heart rate to a particular rate, then keep it elevated for a period of several minutes. It is basically an aerobic workout with a set heart rate goal that you monitor while exercising. Sustained elevation of the heart rate and constant movement are key to good home cardio workouts, so you may want to use a treadmill or elliptical machine. Using them makes it easier to maintain a steady pace and workout in any weather. Determining Your Target Heart Rate for Home Cardio

Workouts When doing cardio workouts, you want to elevate your heart rate enough so that you’re breathing heavily, but are still able to talk (though not as easily as if you were relaxing on the sofa). If you’re so winded you can’t talk, you may be pushing your heart rate too high. There’s a simple formula to determine your target heart rate: For MEN: 226 – age = maximum heart rate. For WOMEN: 220 – age = maximum heart rate. NOW, your target heart rate should be 50% - 75% of your maximum heart rate. If you’re just beginning to exercise regularly, use 50%; if you’re already in good shape, you can work up to 75%. For example, if you’re a 50 year old man who hasn’t been exercising, your target heart rate would be 88: 226 – 50 = 176. 176 X .50 = 88 If you’re a 38 year old woman who’s been jogging a few miles each day for the past several months, your target heart rate could be as high as 136: 220 – 38 = 182. 182 X .75 = 136. If you’re doing cardio treadmill workouts or using an elliptical trainer, you may be fortunate enough to have a heart rate monitor built right in. If so, you can hook yourself up via the chest strap or use the

hand grip monitors to keep track of your heart rate. Any time you go over your target heart rate, slow down until your heart rate drops into the acceptable range. You can also check your heart rate by counting your pulse with two fingers along your jaw line or over the pulse in your wrist. You can count the beats in ten seconds, then multiply by six to get your heart rate. Home Cardio Workout Tips • Any cardio workout is more effective if you vary the intensity. 2-5 minutes at the higher speed combined with dropping back to a slower one for 1-2 minutes is a good moderate goal. • Varying the incline of your treadmill will force your heart to work harder at a slightly slower speed. • Never do a home cardio workout without warming up and cooling down for five minutes each.

• An elliptical trainer gives an excellent cardio workout with almost no impact if you have knee or other joint problems. • Don’t ever exceed your target heart rate. You aren’t getting any additional benefits and you could make yourself sick or injure yourself. • Be sure to keep breathing evenly and deeply in order to keep going. • You can max out at a strong cardio workout lasting about an hour, but the benefits

diminish over the one hour mark. Treadmill cardio workouts are often programmed into your machine, which is helpful when trying to determine how long you should push yourself and how long you should slow down. Many elliptical machines also have built-in cardio programs with varying degrees of difficulty. Try them out to see which home cardio workouts work best for you, but keep the above tips in mind.

The Concession of New Mortgages Increased in Every Region except One The number of new mortgages granted to buy a property during the second quarter of 2015 went up by an average of 26.9% across the whole of Spain, apart from one region in the north. According to the latest report from the General Council of Notaries, the banks lent out more money than they did during the same period the year before, except in the region of Navarra, where the concession of mortgage loans dropped by 16.6%. The study also highlighted the fact that the average amount of money conceded in each mortgage loan also increased by around 13% from 2014, to reach 117,114 euro. In five autonomous regions, this average was a lot higher. In addition, in each region it was noted that property sales have also gone up moderately and it is a lot easier to be granted a mortgage loan from the bank than before. And while there has been an upturn in the number of mortgages by 27%, in several regions the figure is much higher as you can see below: • Cantabria: +51.6% • Balearic Islands: +44.5% • La Rioja: +42.6% • Aragón: +41.6% And, following these regions are: • Murcia: +25.2% • Cataluña: +25% • Madrid: +24.8% • Castilla y León: +24% • Extremadura: +21.9% • Asturias: +21.3% • País Vasco: +12.1%

With regards to the amount of money awarded for mortgages across the whole of the country, the total amount was 12.7% higher than it was for the second quarter of 2014. The highest growth of this figure was seen in mortgages conceded in Extremadura and the Canary Islands, with 46.9% and 33.1% more respectively. The least difference between how much money clients borrowed for their mortgage was registered in Castilla-La Mancha and Cataluña (3.8% and 5.5% respectively). La Rioja was the only autonomous region in Spain where this figure decreased – by 13.5% when compared to last year.

Property purchases also went up in every region between April and June this year, except for in Navarra. This was particularly evident in the regions of La Rioja, Balearic Islands and Cantabria, which saw property sales grow by 38%, 30.6% and 26.6% respectively. On the other hand, in Navarra sales dropped by 28.4% during the same period. With regards to the average price of a property per square metre, there is a lot of difference between regions. Prices fell substantially in Navarra (-24.6%), but only by 5.6% in Asturias and by 2.4% in Aragón. In contrast, house prices went up in other regions including La Rioja (+48.6%), the Balearic Islands (+7.3%), Andalucía (+5.2%) and Extremadura (+3.9%).

An Alternative View Alternative Medicine has been around since time immemorial and whilst there are some hefty debates to be had on the various types of alternatives, there can be no dispute at all that it is one of the biggest growing industry sectors and predicted to grow exponentially over the next fifteen years, probably much to the chagrin of the medical profession. It is a shame all of the medical professionals don’t endorse some of the more well-known practiced alternatives – we can discuss ‘white coat syndrome’ at another juncture -but there is a growing number of doctors and other health professionals that have some alternative therapies in their armouries. The National Health Service in the UK has now taken steps to ensure that those alternative health practitioners actually do fulfil some basic criteria and level of expertise. The CNHC (Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council) has been formed to ensure that minimum levels are met by alternative health practitioners and whilst some might consider iridology a quack science – at least if you go to the one on the CNHC register, you will know that they are at least qualified in their respective field. Each field now has its own council and standards are laid down. Not everyone can call themselves a hypnotherapist or a homoeopathist, well they can call themselves that but exams have to be passed and made available for clients to see and yes as with all the professions – each practitioner has to maintain records (fireproofed, vaulted and saved for 7

years) and undertake a minimum amount of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and be able to demonstrate it. It is thought that, in time, hospitals might have ‘alternative therapy suites’ with Consultants and therapy rooms. The good thing about practically all of the alternatives is that they do no harm –they work in tandem with medical treatments and even if YOU think they have not worked – they will not have done any damage. Is it so unrealistic that you may be able to visit your hypnotherapist in a hospital? Well they did stop burning witches quite a few years ago now and I for one would be really happy to have the choice of a natural therapy, medical intervention and or a choice of both. Some insurers in the UK now have alternative therapists

Pets in Spain

A few months ago Michael Hack and Rob Roberts fostered a dog named Kia that had been rescued by the Pets In Spain animal charity. When Kia was found a permanent home by the charity’s adoption team Mike and Rob decided to adopt a dog from the charity and subsequently volunteered their services to organise a fund raising event to provide much needed funds to help the charity finance the rescue and rehabilitation of more stranded pets. The Let's Eat Restaurant in Benimar was the venue and Michael being the host for the evening greeted everybody as they arrived providing them with a glass of Cava and escorting them to their table for an evening that started and finished on a real high. After three courses of delicious and beautiful plates of food selected from the a la carte menu the atmosphere was electric when Rob Roberts took to the mic to enthral and entertain with his incredible singing

voice and interaction with all there at the event to support the charity. With many great raffle prizes, all thankfully donated, and with a proportion of ticket sales going to the charity, the total amount raised during the evening was 720€. The Pets In Spain team has many projects to help animals in need and also has great success in reuniting lost pets with their owners. A new awareness campaign has been started with the aim of persuading dog owners to register their dog on an emergency blood donor register. The charity is totally selffunding. Money donations, sponsors and household items to sell in the charity shop in La Marina urbanisation are vitally needed. For more information about the Pets In Spain registered charity and the many different animal rescue and welfare projects please call 645 469 253, or email info@petsinspain.com. on their treatment included lists, as they better than most, understand that it actually can turn out to be the cheaper faster alternative and one of the most successful, dependant on the ailment. The growth of the natural healing side of things is not really a surprise – there have always been those that have sworn by various remedies and you can probably think of a few your grandmother might have passed on. Some of us just like to feel we can control things ourselves whereas going to a doctor can sometimes feel like you are passing control over. Some people prefer to do that of course. The juggernaut of the pharmaceutical industry is also cause for concern, and the fact that many of the drugs have bad side effects and also have not been as efficiently checked out as we might wish, plus the fact that more and more herbal remedies with no side effects at all are being found to counteract some of our ailments. Add to the mix that the pharmaceutical companies seem to want to ‘copy’ what nature provides us with for free and sell the same thing (with side effects?) to us via the doctors. All seems bit bizarre. The overriding factor for a successful outcome of any treatment – orthodox or not – is your own belief it will work. With a predominantly over 50’s population here in Spain, many are looking for alternatives and ways to understand how they work and what each one can do to ease various conditions. We’ll explore them all here. See ya soon

“Varry Brava” and “Supersubmarina” head up Fiestas Patronales While you may never have heard of either “Varry Brava” or “Supersubmarina”, they are the main events for this December's Fiestas Patronales. But they are popular and have a following among the Spanish youth and they will be performing on December 5th, 2015, in the Sports Palace. Maybe more of 'our' cup of tea, might be on December 6th, when after the very popular paella contest, The Trouper's Swing Band take to stage. The groups "Varry Brava" and "Supersubmarina" will be the star performers of the Festivity of the Immaculate this year. The bands are in concert on Saturday December 5th at 10.00pm at the Palacio de los Deportes. Varry Brava visited the city of Torrevieja in 2012 with their performance in front of 10,000 people the traveling festival Electromar. On Sunday, December 6th from 2.00pm various local groups and associations will be filling the air around the port with the aroma of paella cooking, as part of the long established contest. Later that evening at the Sports Palace The Trouper's Swing Band, along with Cuervos and El kamión de la basura take to the stage, which sounds like a very, varied bill. Information on where and when one can purchase tickets has yet to be provided. However, with a capacity of more than 5,000, the Sports Palace

should also have tickets available on the door, and for sale from 8.00pm onwards, should you, or younger ones in the family, wish to attend. Unfortunately, no additional information is available on the city's website: www.torrevieja.es, and the city's cultural website, also overseen by the pentapartito council, has not been updated since they came to power, however, the site is located at: www.torreviejacultural.com. The City's website does state that from 1st September until 30th June one can purchase tickets from 11:00 am to 1:00pm at the Taquilla Teatro Municipal, however, this, along with the Municipal Theatre remain closed, and so please do not go here to try and purchase tickets for any event planned by the pentapartito council, until further notice. They also promote servicam.es, which is now; www.instanticket.es, however Torrevieja is no longer on their list of city's that one can book tickets for a performance of any kind.

2015 Volkswagen Golf 1.4 TSI 150 R Line With its Golf R looks and sweet 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol, the Golf R-Line is a fine family hatch. But is it really worth more than £25k?What is it? It’s essentially a Golf GT with a £995 styling package to look more like a Golf R. Golf aficionados will instantly spot the 17in wheels, instead of the R’s more purposeful 18in rims, body coloured rather than chrome door mirrors, and of course, just two, not four exhaust tailpipes at the rear. So, what do you get? To start with, more aggressive front and rear bumpers, plus extended side sills, a boot spoiler and naturally, a rear diffuser - well that's de rigueur these days. Inside you get a set of very smart sports seats trimmed in contrasting cloth with Alcantara inserts. There’s also an R-line multifunction steering wheel and neon-like illuminated strips in the door cards to make your mates go ‘wow’ after dark. What's it like? The R-Line comes with a choice of two engines: either a 2.0 TDI 150 diesel or this sweet 1.4 TSI 150 petrol. It might lack the low-down torque of the oil burner, but it’s gutsy enough for day-to-day pootling and encourages you to use the slick six-speed manual gearbox more often, and that’s no drag. Actually, the fact you have to work it a little harder combined with its free-revving disposition quite suits the car’s sporty pretentions. It’s only a shame that the tone doesn’t; it’s very smooth-sounding but wholly unexciting. Surprisingly, for a petrol at least, what you do get is a fair amount of buzz through the steering wheel and pedals the minute the rev-needle hits 3000rpm. This is a ‘clever’ engine, because it uses Active Cylinder Technology to make it cleaner and more economical. On part-throttle between 1000-4000rpm, and at speeds of up to 80mph, it shuts down the middle-two cylinders by switching off their injectors and using actuators to shift the camshaft lobes away from the valves so they remain

closed. VW reckons it saves up to 10% in fuel, and reduces CO2 emissions by around 9g/km. You would never know it’s going on, though. The switch from two- to four-pot power is totally seamless, the only tell-tale being an indicator on the multifunction display between the instruments. All R-Line’s come with a Driver Profile selector that allows you to alter the engine’s throttle response and steering weight between Comfort, Normal and Sport modes. Because our test car had the optional Dynamic Chassis Control, this changes the suspension’s stiffness, as well. In Comfort the steering is light and the suspension takes the edge off general bumps. However, because the R-Line gets sports suspension - which is stiffer and lowered by 10mm – there’s still a residual firmness to it which means you feel the odd thud over deeper ruts. Switch to Sport and the setup is noticeably stiffer. The immediate decrease in body roll means the Golf settles quicker in bends, and the steering weights up to give more feedback at speed - albeit with no more feel. As with all sporty Golfs, it makes for very tidy handling car that’s easy to drive on its door handles. However, if

you’re the kind of person that needs something more edgy, then a tail-happy Focus ST is around the same money and is a lot quicker, too. Mind you, a Focus can’t live with the Golf when it comes to interior look and feel. To some the Golf might be rather stayed, but the gloss-black fascia, aluminium pedals and fancy seat trim of the R-Line do make it swish in a retrained kind of way. Of course, the important surfaces are all made of soft-touch materials and every switch and knob operates like it’s from a premium exec. This five-door version is very practical as well. The spacious cabin is big enough to fit four six-foot adults without too much of an issue, and the boot is big enough to deal with their luggage needs, too. You also get an infotainment system with a DAB radio, Bluetooth and sat-nav, which includes a three-year subscription to VW’s Car-Net service. This offers online features such as traffic and weather reports, tells you the availability of parking spaces and where to find the cheapest petrol in the area. Adaptive cruise control with emergency city braking city braking, plus front and rear parking sensors are standard too. Should I buy one? The Golf R-Line is a funny car because it creates a dichotomy. On one side there’s the Focus ST that I mentioned earlier, which is a proper hot-hatch, more fun to drive and cheaper. Or, if you’re excited by the Golf’s quality, then can I tempt you with an Audi A3 Sportback instead? You can have an S Line Navigation with the same 1.4-litre engine, but for £80 less. Volkswagen Golf 1.4 TSI 150 R-Line Price £24,845; Engine 4 cyls, 1395cc, turbocharged, petrol; Power 148bhp at 5000-6000rpm; Torque 184b ft at 1500-3500rpm; Gearbox 6-spd manual; Kerb weight 1270kg; Top speed 134mph; 0-62mph 8.2sec; Economy 58.9mpg (combined); CO2 rating & BIK tax band 112g/km, 17%

New 'super battery' could power future electric cars

Researchers at the University of Cambridge have revealed a new ‘super battery’ that could replace the current lithium-ion battery found in most electric and plug-in vehicles. The new lithium-oxygen battery (not pictured) is said to overcome many of the barriers that currently limit widespread adoption of electric vehicles. The lithium-oxygen battery has 10 times the energy density of the lithiumion batteries currently used, meaning the battery technology would allow vehicles to approach similar range and usability as a conventional internal combustion engine. Another key issue electric and plug-in vehicles currently face is the high cost of

developing lithium-ion batteries, and the extra weight they add to the cars. The cost to replace a battery on a normal electric car exceeds ÂŁ3,000. Not only will the lithium-oxygen battery be five times cheaper to develop, researchers say it will be five times lighter, too. The high energy density also helps it to achieve 93 per cent efficiency. The only drawback, however, is that the technology is still at least a decade away from reaching the production lines - according Clare Grey, the Cambridge professor who led the research. While successful in the laboratory, the system is still not charging and discharging at high enough levels.

Quesada Golf Society Last Wednesday Quesada Golf Society played on the course on the doorstep La Marquesa. It was a late morning first teeoff time so the players didn´t have to get up in the dark and could remain in slumber-land until the sun came up. The course which is one of the oldest in the area is showing signs of wear and tear despite the maintenance that goes on with the fairways and some of the greens patchy. Despite this there was as always for this course a very good turn-out with 32 players contesting 2 divisions with the overall winner taking the Quesada Country Club Cup. The weather on the day was perfect for golf with blue skies and sunshine and no wind. The scores on the day were generally good. The winner of the Gold Division was big hitter Brent Hollins who came in with 36 stableford points. In second place was the chirpy southerner Roy Westlake with 34 points and in third place was the society’s lowest handicapper and ever so consistent Northerner Alan Slack with 32 points. In the Silver Division the winner with a great score of 37 points which exceeded his previous best score by a wide margin was our Treasurer Brian Airey. In second place was one of our most senior members who is in a good run of form Ann Hobbs who returned a very respectable score of 31 points. In third place was Mancunian Keith Armstrong with 25 points. Well done to the overall winner Brian. The winners of the “Nearest the Pins” were Bob Jones, Alan Slack (2), Brian Airey, “Sailor-boy” David Johnson and John Simmons who was making a welcome return to the golf course after over 2 years out through injury. In the annual

knock-out competition Big John Dunnion overcame the challenge of Sergio Spiers who wilted after making a fantastic start. In the other semi-final Big Roy Kavanagh beat Mancunian Lord Ian Fogerty. The final will therefore be contested by a couple of heavyweights and “walking footballers” Mancunian Big John and Scouser Big Roy. No real football rivalry between them as, although Big John supports Man U, Roy is from the “Blue” half of Liverpool and is an Evertonian. There were 4 winners of the 2´s, Tom Taylor, Mike Brown, Brian Airey and Roy Westlake who each went home with a handful of Euro´s. The next game is an individual Stableford competition at one of the exPolaris World courses Hacienda Riquelme on Wednesday 11 November. There is a members meeting at the QCC on Tuesday 3 November starting at 10.30 am which members are encouraged to attend. Anyone in the Quesada area looking to join a very friendly golf society and play golf once a fortnight at a wide variety of courses at very reasonable cost, should contact the Membership Secretary Les Pancott on 966716723.

Rockets’s Golf Society Alenda Golf – 27th October 2015

Monteforte del Cid was our destination and the well looked after course Alenda which has had some more TLC added a few bunkers and an enlarged 9th green, plus strategically extended buggy paths like on the 12th. But what a month October has been, we set out with the threat of lluvia (rain) but blue skies and glorious sunshine perfect for golf, was the order of the day. The sun does shine on the righteous. It was a Medal competition, yes that dreaded word, but the weather was obviously the reason for some good scores, along with the good condition Alenda is in, but the nets near the 2nd Tee leaves a large question as it partly blocks the view of the fairway.(unless you can

draw the ball). Worth a mention is Rocket Ron who seems to like Alenda and if my memory serves me right, he did well virtually twelve months to the day at Alenda, that time he scored 41 points. Must be the air at Monforte del Cid. One other thing there is a multitude (well three) of Ron’s in the winner’s circle! Results Gold Category: 1st Ron Chambers: 2nd Rod Smith: 3rd Ron Swift: Silver Category: 1st Ron “Rocket” Nicholson: 2nd Billy Wilks: 3rd Mick Hithersay. Nearest Pins: Hole 3: Stewart Swift Hole 5: Ivie Davies Hole 13: Andy Billing Hole 16: Stewart Swift. Longest Drive: Ron Swift Best Guest: Stewart Swift H/C 8 Nett 75. It certainly was a good day for Dad and Son Swift and family with all the prizes, wish I had been at their apres golf party. Thanks to Marty and Mandy at St. James’s Gate for the Shepherd’s Pie The next away day is on 10th November at the Molina del Segura Murcia course Altorreal Golf, The first Tee Time is 10:00am, so be there 45 minutes before. Football y Fútbol Forget the football for a minute, the real football game played Saturday was the World Cup Rugby Football final played between Australia and New Zealand, with the All Blacks coming out worthy winners at the end of the match. It was also refreshing to hear both captains having nothing but praise and respect for the opposition instead of the shameless pity and blame game usually heard at the end of Match of the Day on a Saturday night. As one commentator put it, in football you have some players who spend the entire 90 minutes trying to pretend they have been injured while in Rugby you have players who

play for 80 minutes and never want anyone to know the pain they are in. Such a shame that some Association Football players are so soft and such cheats, giving a bad name to the beautiful game. Maybe after watching the success of the Rugby World Cup, FIFA will take note and bring back respect and sportsmanship into football, rather than gamesmanship. As we go to press, everything could have changed regarding the Chosen One, so let's have a look at what the papers and the gossip columnists had to say about the likes of Mourinho, Hazard, Bale, Kane and Guardiola. After being beaten at home 1:3 by Liverpool, all eyes are on Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, who is facing the sack as the club's owner Roman Abramovich prepares a £9.5m pay-off say the Sunday Mirror while Mourinho has insisted that the club is united behind his management and he is prepared to stay and fight to keep his job per the Sunday Express. Other gossip notes that Chelsea will give Mourinho two more games to save his job according to the Sun on Sunday. Meanwhile, over here in sunny Spain, Real Madrid have

held talks with Chelsea midfielder Eden Hazard, 24, and the Belgium international is likely to move to the Bernabeu if Mourinho is sacked. Staying in Europe, Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola, 44, is in talks with Manchester City about taking over from Manuel Pellegrini next season and Bayern want to sign Tottenham Hotspur's £50m-rated striker Harry Kane, 22, at the end of the season. Having scored just one goal in four games, Manchester United are set to make a move for Real Madrid's £90mrated winger Gareth Bale, 26, in January, with the prospect of trading him for goalkeeper David de Gea, 24. The Old Trafford club are also preparing to make a £40m bid for Lazio's 22-year-old midfielder Felipe Anderson. Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes, 40, has damaged his chances of returning to Old Trafford in a coaching role after criticising manager Louis van Gaal's methods said the Sunday Mirror. Real Madrid midfielder Isco has been linked with a move to the Premier League and, after helping the Spanish side to a win over Las Palmas on Saturday, the 23-year-old said: "I'm comfortable anywhere, as long as it's on the pitch." Paris St-Germain captain Thiago Silva hopes to persuade Real Madrid playmaker Cristiano Ronaldo, 30, to move to the French club next summer said French Paper L'Equipe. Juventus's former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra, 34, wants to become a manager in England when he retires from playing. Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino feels Aston Villa's owners had "no patience" over the sacking of Tim Sherwood.

Remi Garde

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has urged Remi Garde to take the vacant Villa managerial post even if the 49-yearold Frenchman, who played under Wenger at Arsenal, cannot bring his own assistants with him. Southampton boss Ronald Koeman believes English managers will continue to be outnumbered in the Premier League - there are currently only five - because it is where every foreign coach wants to be. Manchester United legend George Best's boots are to be given the same treatment ancient artefacts dug up at archaeological digs get - in a bid to preserve them for future generations at the National Football Museum said

the Sunday People. The operation will cost about £3,000 and take 80 hours of painstaking repairs by footwear craftsmen. The 39-year-old Adidas Milano boots will undergo conservation work similar to the procedures carried out on ancient relics. It is being paid for by the National Football Museum in Manchester, the city where Best established himself as a legend of the game. National Football Museum's Gabrielle Flexer says that Best's boots could create amazement for future generations. The museum has been loaned the boots by their owner, who bought them privately and lives in France. Conservator Gabrielle Flexer, the project leader, told the Sunday People: “This may seem like a lot of work for a pair of football boots but in centuries to come they could be viewed with the amazement that a Roman soldier’s sandal is today.” Belfast-born Manchester United hero Best wore the black and green boots, which have plastic soles, playing for Northern Ireland in 1976. Conservators have even been in touch with the Adidas heritage team in Berlin and the V&A Museum in London to make sure the repair work is of the highest quality. Best, who won one European Cup and two league title medals, died in 2005 aged 59, after battling alcoholism and liver disease.

CD Torrevieja lose 2-1 against Torre-Levante And so what's the answer to Torrevieja's woes. It was another well-played game. They took the lead and looked like winning it, but at the end of the day, they came away once again, without any points to show for their efforts. It's hard to find excuses or to point fingers, as the team deserved to win. The main new addition was the expected debut of Ruben Suarez: a 'futbolista' who needs no introduction to Spanish football fans. Torre Levante were reduced to distant shots while the visitors enjoyed the majority of the ball. The chances came fast and thick from the third minute with the pressure paying off in the 14th minute when César received a short pass from Ruben Suarez, who left it for Adrian to shoot from outside the box, Eder then diverted the path of the ball into the net in his attempt to block it. On the attack and looking for more, the tide would turn in the 22nd minutes when Carrasco was shown a second yellow card, just three minutes after the first and Torrevieja would play the next hour plus with just ten men. After the break the extra man began to tell with Torre-Levante moving the ball around with patience, looking to find the hole with their eleventh man.

Very occasionally Torrevieja managed to stop the oncoming avalanches just relying on the quick counter attack. 12 minutes later Torre-Levante equalised and although Torrevieja fought with courage to retake the lead, the situation was not favourable at all. The accumulated fatigue and the rival growing in composure, allowed them to attack more quickly. Torrevieja resilience finally broke in the 81st minute when Juanra's shot from outside the box, just squeezed in past Oscar, past his outstretched fingertips. With time running out, Torry gave it one more try to get back on even terms but ran out of time and legs, with the extra man proving to be too much for Torry to be able to chase down all the time. While the team are playing well, the numbers say it all. Sitting on ten points and just a point above the relegation zone, next Sunday's game is more important than ever as game 13 this season is against UD Benigánim, who also have ten points but their worse goal difference puts them below the Blue and Whites. It's more vital than ever that the people of Torrevieja come out and support the club. Kick Off is at the warmer time of day, at 12.00 noon at the Estadio Vicente García on Sunday 8th, November, 2015.
