Remembrance Service in Orihuela Costa The fallen from world conflicts were remembered on Sunday morning at the Capilla de las Mil Palmeras. More than 400 people attended the 8th service than has been commemorated on the Orihuela Costa in the presence of the Vice Consul for Alicante, who is also the President of The Royal British Legion, Spain District North, Lloyd Milen, Nigel Hails, Orihuela’s Councillor for Foreign Residents, Sofia Alvarez, Guardia Civil Trafico Officer Francisco Morales and the mayor of Pilar de la Horadada, Ignacio Ramos. The Phoenix Concert Band under the direction of MD, Julie Schofield played inside the church prior to and during the service, while the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums led the 'standards' to the Church. And estimated 400 people made this possibly the largest gathering to date as mostly former expatriate military personnel, their families and friends gathered to pay their respects. The service was led once again by Rev Terry Baxter with readings from Branch Members Walter Shatford

and Michael Reeves along with a moving version of ‘We will remember them’ performed by Elise MacGregor and Janelle, accompanied on guitar by Alex Scott.

Following the playing of the Last Post by Derek Hayes and ‘Flowers of the forest’ played by Tony Dolpin, two minutes of silence was held to remember those friends, family and colleagues who have served in the armed forces.. Keith Carter, chairman of the Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion, said the event was yet another great success and it was especially pleasing to see so many local residents, of all nationalities, coming out to show their support. He said "It has been a truly wonderful day." Following the service in Mil Palmeras there was a further dedication in Campoverde Village Church and a Poppy Appeal Concert featuring the area's massed choirs, and organised by Nigel Hopkins, at the Cristo Recusitado Temple in La Regia. Another service will be held tomorrow, on November 11th, at the La Siesta Church in Torrevieja. Everyone is welcome to attend. More photos from Sunday's service can be found on Page 7.

Torry Army support Age Concern

LAST WEEK two of Torrevieja's most established associated joined forces, with the Torry Army giving their support to Age Concern, in their quest to raise funds for a new Coach. Thanks to a special fundraising event, a cheque for 250€ was presented by Torry Army's Edward Greenburry to Age Concern President Maureen Payne. The cheque bring Age Concerns fundraising efforts past the 26,000€ mark as they get closer and closer to their goal of 30,000€ for the new coach. Age Concern President Maureen Payne said; “We'd like to thank the Torry Army for their kind donation. It brings us ever closer to our goal of 30,000€

which we hope to reach by the end of the year, or early in 2016. The new coach will be primarily used to transport members to and from our headquarters in San Luis. It will be specially adapted with a wheel chair ramp so that we can support as many people as possible in the community.” Torry Army President Pat Stewart said: “We are delighted to be able to support Age Concern, We are all getting older and may be looking for their assistance one of these days. We also supported the last fundraising efforts for a new Coach for Age Concern, back in 2004, and we are delighted to be able to help out this time also.” Age Concern Costa Blanca Sur

was formed in March 1998 and its constitution was accepted and registered by the Generalitat Valenciana in May of that year. It is a member of the Federacion de Asociaciones de Age Concern Espana which is registered in Madrid. Age Concern in Torrevieja is run by volunteers and are always looking for more. If you want to do something worthwhile and are prepared to make a commitment of one session a week to the charity they would like to hear from you on 966 786 887. The Centre is open Mondays to Fridays from 10 am to 1.30 pm. They do not ask for

payment for any advice, information or assistance given. Age Concern Costa Blanca Sur also has a charity shop in Torrevieja at C/Patricio Zammit 41 on the corner with C/Concordia and is situated very close to the Bus Station in Torrevieja and is open Mondays to Fridays from 10.00am to 1.30pm. They are always grateful for good quality donated items: clothing, bric-abrac, books, etc. However, we are unable to accept large items of furniture due to lack of storage. Donations can be taken straight to the Charity Shop or to The Centre. It only costs 5.00€ to become

a member of the Torry Army, CD Torrevieja's official supporters club, with more details to be found on their website at: www.fctorrevieja.net. The Torry Army was formed by a small group of ex-pats in San Luis who wanted to support and follow the local football team. During the mid-2000's they had more than 700 members although over the years many have returned to the UK to be with family or for work. The Torry Army is always looking to attract more members and apart from supporting CD Torrevieja on the terraces they also arrange dun social events such as quiz-nights, bingo sessions, lunches, day-trips and other social activities as well as arranging a coach to CD Torrevieja away games when there is sufficient interest. At their Club Shop in San Luis, open 10.00am to noon weekdays, you can purchase Torry Army branded merchandise: polo shirts, sweatshirts, hats, scarves, caps etc. and football club home and away shirts. The Torry Army was formed to bring together likeminded people to support and promote their local football team CD Torrevieja and enjoy each other’s company at the social activities it organises and that has never changed and is its reason for being.

Ministers visit Cuba to sign deal to re-finance short term debt to Spain

By Andrew Atkinson Spain's Economy Minister Luis de Guindos and Industry Minister Jose Manuel Soria visited Cuba on Monday November 1st to sign a deal to re-finance Cuba's short term debt to Spain. I visited Cuba, and the capital Havana, in February, 2015, in the wake of the USA and Cuba agreeing to once again establish diplomatic relations between the two countries - re-instating diplomatic relations after over 60 years. Having been in Cuba in February, I found Havana in a 'time-warp'. This followed restrictions imposed by the USA - and the 'Missile Crisis'. In December 2014 USA President Barack Obama initiated full diplomatic relations between America and Cuba that saw America lift certain travel restrictions into Cuba. The move also saw some new economic ties open. President Obama met with Raul Castro in April - the first time the leaders of Cuba and the USA had met in decades. The visit came in the wake of the United States removing Cuba from its list of state sponsors of terror in June, opening a gateway for the diplomatic renewal between the two countries. I witnessed refurbishment work on the USA Embassy in Havana in February, situated on the Havana waterfront, which formerly housed the American Embassy, prior to the severing of diplomatic ties after the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s. The move ended decades of Cold War enmity in the wake of the failed 'Bay of Pigs' invasion and the Missile Crisis - when Diplomatic relations ceased between the USA and Cuba in 1961. Fidel Castro visited New York in 1959 in the wake of ousting Fulgencio Batista - a USA backed dictator -

based in Havana. President Eisenhower refused to meet Castro. And, returning to Havana, Castro nationalised all USA interests within Cuba - without compensation. A move that lead to America breaking diplomatic ties, and imposing a trade embargo. Properties that belonged to Americans today see Cuban families in residence. The re-opening diplomatic move by President Obama came in the belief that the trade embargo on Communist island Cuba, 90 miles south of Florida, was ineffective. When Obama met Raul Castro in April it was the first meeting between USA and Cuba leaders since 1956. Raul Castro succeeded brother Fidel in 2008. My visit to Cuba witnessed many as poverty stricken underlined by an aged cigar smoking Cuban lady running across a busy road to greet me, and asking for a photo, of which she wanted paying. Most Cubans are not wealthy people although Cubans receive free University education, and a free health service. I saw Cuban workers waiting at the roadside, saw police stopping vehicles, and instruct the driver to take them to their workplace. People jumped into the back of a truck to go on their way. In a 'time-warp' I posed alongside 1950s American Cadillacs and Chevrolets in Havana - mostly used as taxis for tourists. The Cuban currency is the 'Cuc' and, from research, I read that a qualified Doctor's salary is little more than 25 Cucs a month. While Cubans go about their daily tasks hundreds of European tourists spend their time on the Island's beaches, drinking champagne and cocktails - smoking Havana cigars. Havana is a bustling, busy City, crammed with tourists. Agreements were signed by the Spanish and Cuban Ministers on economic, innovation, industrial and

development energy policies and the refinancing of Cuba´s 201.5 million Euros in short term debt, which includes principal and interest, to Spain. Ricardo Cabrisas, Cuban Vice President, signed the deal with De Guindos at the headquarters of the Council of State. In February refurbishment was being undertaken at the USA Embassy in Havana - that has now re-opened. A Cuban Embassy has also opened in Washington while it was formally announced in July that the USA and Cuba had reached an agreement to re-establish formal diplomatic relations that led to opening Embassies in each other's capitals. It seems that following the meeting between Cuba and Spain this month things are moving in the right direction. “New stages and new opportunities are opening, I'm convinced that Spain, as happens in foreign trade and in many other markets, will play a fundamental role, especially given the long-standing relationship with Cuba," said Spain's Finance Minister De Guindos.

Barrio del Acequión cancels their celebrations Last Monday week, the organisers for the association for the Barrio del Acequión announced that they have had no choice but to cancel their festivities because of a complete lack of response from anyone in the Pentapartito council. Thus, over the December holidays, the Barrio del Acequión will not be celebrating the festivities plus they have left the door open to the possible dismantling of the neighbourhood association The Association of Residents of Barrio El Acequión issued a statement in which they made known to all members of the association and the press that they have had no choice but to come to the decision to suspend the activities "and the possible dismantling of the facilities and assets of the association." The reason that has caused this decision is the lack of response from the City Council, with the association specifically stating that they have been left without a choice because of "our fruitless efforts made to the Municipal Corporation, through letters sent to the various departments requesting the necessary authorizations for the completion of the recreational, social and solidarity with the neighbourhood's activities. These include such festivities as bonfires, collection and

distribution of toys and food at Christmas and Epiphany, the very popular Bisiquión, social events, bingo, charity fundraising, music, dancing plus family and neighbourhood meetings." The association noted that: "to date, we have not had the slightest response from anyone in the Council, either for or against, showing a total and absolute ignorance on the part of the government team." The association held a meeting on Saturday afternoon in turn wanted to send out a general thanks to neighbours and supporters who have made the activity possible for many years. Neighbours from the area commented that June's "Bisiquón" was one of the very first events attended by councillors from the pentapartito, although none of

British Ambassador visits Samaritans

Last Friday the 'Samaritans in Spain' opened their new drop in centre at Punta Marina near Punta Prima. This is an extension their charity shop that is already established there. Guests of honour included Patron Dave Bull plus the British Ambassador Simon Manley and other members from the British Consulate in Alicante. The official honours of cutting the ribbon fell to local author, broadcaster and journalist Dave Bull, who said a few words of thanks followed by British Ambassador Simon Manley who praised all the volunteers for their hard work and hours of dedication that they freely gave towards the project. After cutting the tape, the guests were given a tour of the new facilities and given an overview of how the call centre and private drop in rooms are to be used, Keeping the crowd entertained was a spinning class run by Jason who is raising funds for the Samaritans through the 'Spartans' Obstacle Race on November 28th (more details on Page 4). Dave and Mitch Bull also took part in the work out festivities and also on November 28th 2015, the father and son team plan to Kayak from Murcia

to Guardamar to raise funds for cancer charity, AECC and to raise awareness for Samaritans in Spain, of which Dave is their Patron. They will be spending the coming weeks training for the event. The British Consul in Alicante, Sarah-Jane Morris, also congratulated the Samaritans in Spain in the launch of their national free phone number 900 525 100, earlier this year. The Consul said “The Samaritans in Spain is a fantastic organisation run by a really dedicated and professional group of volunteers. They play a key role in supporting English speaking individuals in Spain who are going through a difficult patch in their lives. I’m always very impressed with the amazing work they do and think their motto you talk, we listen really captures how they approach

providing that support. Consular teams across Spain really value the impact they have and will continue to support them and promote their work at every opportunity. I’m delighted that they have been able to achieve their aim of launching a 24hour, 365 days a year free-phone service to those in need.” Samaritans in Spain is an organisation operated by a group of unpaid Volunteers. They are available by telephone or e mail to any English speaker across the whole of Spain and the Islands, of any age, who is experiencing emotional problems of any kind. They intend to continue to expand and develop the service, which is based very much on the established Samaritan model, which has been in operation in the UK since 1953. They are pleased to have had the support of Samaritans UK throughout the time they have worked to establish themselves in Spain. The project began in September 2005 and culminated in the launch of the

Costa Blanca Samaritans service in Spain in July 2008 when they opened their first Branch in Benissa, three nights a week. This was followed by the opening of the second branch in Villamartin in January 2009. In March 2009 they increased their opening hours to five evenings a week and this was further increased in January 2010 to seven evenings a week. With the opening in 2013 of their Call Centre, shop and drop in centre at the Punta Marina Commercial Centre in Torrevieja the offices in Benissa and Villamartin have now closed. From January 2013, the service increased to a full 24 hours a day service, 365 days a year. They also have a satellite centre at the British Embassy in Madrid where there are five trained listeners

and they are very grateful for all the support they receive from The British Embassy in Madrid and the Consular offices across Spain. The Samaritans in Spain is very active in the province of Alicante and throughout Spain supporting people of all nationalities who find themselves in situations of need, providing a much needed listening service. The Samaritans in Spain can also be contacted by e-mail via pat@samaritansinspain.com and at their drop-in centre and shop based in the Punta Prima Commercial Centre in Torrevieja. New British Consul-General announced for north-east Spain Lloyd Milen has been promoted from Vice Consul in Alicante, to become the new British Consul-General for northeast Spain. Lloyd Milen, currently Vice Consul for the Alicante region, has been appointed as Consul-General in Barcelona and the Consular Regional Manager for north-east Spain, which includes the popular regions for Britons of Catalunya and the Balearic Islands. Mr Milen, who will take up the position next month, replaces Andrew Gwatkin, who has left for a new role outside the Foreign Office. Recruitment for a new Vice Consul in Alicante begins this week. As Consul-General, Mr Milen will represent UK interests and lead the teams of the British Consulates in Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza, as well as the British Honorary Consuls in Menorca, Tarragona, Gerona and Andorra. Lloyd Milen said: “I am delighted to take up this opportunity to lead three very experienced consular teams who provide high quality assistance to the British visitors and residents that need our help. The consulates of north-east Spain are among the busiest in the world, together handling nearly 600 serious assistance cases last year – from deaths to detentions to hospitalisations - and issuing more than 1200 emergency passports.” The north-east consular region sees some 5.2 million British visitors every year, many to the popular destinations of

Barcelona, the Catalan coast and Balearics resorts. In addition, more than 37,000 Britons are registered as residents of the region, with many more thought to reside for all or part of the year. Simon Manley, British Ambassador, said: “Lloyd has been a fantastic asset to British tourists and residents in the Alicante region for the last seven years, and I am very pleased that he will now be taking his skills and experience to lead the teams in north-east Spain and Andorra. I also have no doubt that we will be able to recruit a talented person to replace him as Vice Consul in Alicante, in order to carry on our valuable work there.” Mr Milen was born in Middlesbrough and studied political science at Brunel University, followed by roles in the NHS and housing charities, before moving to Spain in 2006. He was appointed Vice Consul in Alicante in 2008.

School Daze Dinners Some say our schooldays are the best time of our lives and others disagree. One aspect of our school days that we will all remember, like it was yesterday, were the school dinners. We ‘enjoyed’ lumpy mashed potatoes, the darkest green cabbage piled on our plates like Mount Everest, butter beans three times a week, thick yellow custard and so many more culinary delights we may prefer to put to the back of our minds. We all had great fun in the playground kicking a ball, throwing two balls up against a wall, hopping around on one leg playing hopscotch or maybe having a sneaky puff on a Woodbine behind the bike shed. Over the next couple of weeks you have not one but two opportunities to travel back in time a decade or four to the days that our parents kept telling us were the best days of our lives. You are all invited to re-live these magical moments at Reflections Restaurant and Bar, Calle Aviles, San Luis. The first of these special events has been organised by the guys from The Cucaracha Club film. On Thursday 19th November at 7.30pm, the classroom doors will be flung open and memories of the School Disco will come flooding back as you enter into days long past. Siesta Productions, responsible for the making of the film The Cucaracha Club in and around Torrevieja, play host to an Old School Disco. And it's not just the great music from your youth but you'll be taken back all those years with a two course menu that includes a choice of your favourite’s sausages,

fish fingers or cheese burgers and for pud a choice of rice pudding with cinnamon or apple crumble. Livening the evening up, TKO's Keith Nicol will be spinning the discs and playing all the ’haunting melodies’ of the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and for the really young 40 somethings, maybe even a few from the 80's. There are lots of prizes for the best dressed school boys and girls and those who wish to come in the dress of the era. All this fun and food: all much improved from our school days is waiting for you at Reflections on November 19th. So get your tickets now. They are priced at just 12.50€ from Reflections or book your place by phoning 603 344 717 or 688 387 490. On Wednesday 25th November at 7.30pm we go back in time for Smile Charity Group to host their event School Dinners. We may not remember our history, geography or arithmetic lessons but we will all remember our school dinners for one reason or another! No packed lunches then with good and healthy nutritional food it was all hearty, belly filling food without much thought for proteins, vitamins or carbohydrates. Peas like bullets, lumpy gravy, stodgy suet puddings, and the memories come flooding back!

The School Dinners event also takes place at REFLECTIONS, Calle Aviles, San Luis (Just down from the Christmas Shop) on Thursday 25th November will be reminiscent of days past with the menu similar to what we knew, but will be cooked superbly, totally edible and to be enjoyed. A two course menu including spam fritters, macaroni cheese or shepherd’s pie with chips or freshly mashed potato with ‘Afters’ of either apple crumble with lump free custard or hot rice pudding with a dollop of jam. All comes with bread and butter and a glass of orange squash. The school timetable is going to include games we used to play like Conkers and Jacks. Entertainment from local vocalist Ricardo getting us on our feet dancing to songs from the 60’s and 70’s. Bank robbery in Los Montesinos

Rutas y Caminos de la Sal

By Andrew Atkinson Local Policia and the Guardia Civil are appealing to the public following a bank robbery in the quite town of Los Montesinos, Alicante. "The Banco Santander de Los Montesinos has suffered a robbery. Any information or witnesses are asked to get in touch with the Civil Guard on 062," said a spokesperson from the Local Policia in Los Montesinos. The daring robbery occurred on Saturday night, November 7th that involved 'explosive' materials. “The Civil Guard is looking for the authors of the event that happened on Saturday night," said the spokesperson. "An explosion has led to numerous failures in the interior of the bank office," they added. Guardia Civil, Local Policia and firefighters attended the scene following the robbery. At the time of going to Press no details were at hand as to what was stolen during the raid. A petrol station in Los Montesinos was the scene of two armed robberies earlier this year. Since the robberies in Montesinos and other areas in the Vega Baja region arrests have been made. Los Montesinos, which celebrated their annual October Fiestas last month, is this year celebrating its 25th Anniversary as an Independent Town.

After the monthly meeting of the Asociación de las Rutas y Caminos de la Sal on Saturday 7th November, about a dozen of the group of Volunteers went on a walk from the information center, the Casa Forestal, up to the far end of the lake of La Mata, at the roundabout junction to Los Montesinos. The day was perfect, the lake calm and like a mirror and in places the silence was total, difficult to imagine for a place so near a major road and large town. Some of the group looked at plants and birds en route and were lucky to find things of interest. We took note of the new signs which were made by a small working party that spent Saturday mornings for several months producing these. We all enjoyed the companionship as well as the walk and hope to repeat such activities in the future. We welcome new members at our meeting once a month, the next of which will be on the 5th of December at the Casa Forestal, the little white house perched on the hill at the roundabout for La Mata. We can give guided visits to the Park for small groups in English and German. To find out more please look at our website which is www.lamataparkvolunteers.blogspot.com. If you would like to join us please contact our President Stephen Boll on email: exgp10@yahoo.co.uk or Secretary Maggie on tel. 966 848

Star Joe Longthorne 'doing really well' after cancer scare

By Andrew Atkinson Benidorm Palace show star Joe Longthorne has finished radiotherapy treatment following the return of mouth cancer this year. “He’s doing really well, the radiotherapy finished six weeks ago, but it stays in the system for six months," said Manager Jamie Moran. Longthorne, 60, who appeared at the Benidorm Palace in 2012, was diagnosed with mouth cancer in June 2014, and underwent a 12 hours operation to remove the tumour. This summer the tumour returned - leading to show cancellations by the star - and Longthorne, who has faced numerous cancer battles, had a six weeks course of radiotherapy. Jamie, who is also Joe's partner, said: "It takes its toll. Joe was 30 when he first got cancer. He’s 60 now - and you don’t bounce back so quickly.” Joe, who lives in Blackpool, and is expected to return to show business in 2016, will be in attendance at The Imperial Hotel, Blackpool on November 15th, in aid of the Joe Longthorne Foundation. “Joe does feel bad to have cancelled shows around the country - but it looks like he’ll be back - being on stage is his big love. “That is what Joe’s lived his life for," added Jamie.

Spanish govt vows to take legal action if Catalan parliament backs independence bid

The Spanish government pledged Friday to take immediate legal action against the regional parliament of Catalonia if the Barcelona-based body approves a proposal to formally start an attempt to break away from the rest of Spain. Catalonia's parliament has agreed to put the secessionist parties' proposal to a vote Monday, setting itself up for a confrontation with the national government in Madrid, which deems the move a violation of the Spanish Constitution. Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria said the government will seek the opinion of the Council of State and then call a special Cabinet meeting to announce it is seeking a Constitutional Court ruling. The separatism proposal was drawn up by the "Together for Yes" proindependence alliance and the radical leftist CUP party, which between them have 72 seats in Catalonia's 135-member

regional parliament following an election in September. The two are in talks to form a new regional government but disagree strongly over who should be president. Acting regional president Artur Mas has pledged Catalan independence within 18 months if he is chosen as regional president but the CUP has vowed not to support him. The parliament has until Jan. 9 to form a government or call a new election. Catalonia, a region of 7.5 million people in northeast Spain, is responsible for nearly a fifth of Spain's economic output and is proud of its own culture and language. Pro-independence sentiment began to swell four years ago at the height of Spain's economic crisis as secessionists claimed Catalonia could do better on its own. Most polls show Catalans would like a secession referendum but are evenly divided over independence.

Did it fall from the Death Star? Residents of the normally tranquil Murcia countryside had their peace disturbed on Tuesday when a strange object showed up out of nowhere. Shepherd brothers Francisco and Juan Espín del Amo, who were tending their flocks in the area as usual, stared in amazement at the greyish, oval-shaped thing that looked like nothing they had ever seen before. The object weighed around 20 kilograms and measured about a meter in diameter. It was wrapped in a black material that appeared to provide isolation. “It must have dropped from the sky,” they concluded, according to local media reports. The object could also have been a military device – given that the army was conducting training exercises in an area known as Llanos del Cagitan, within the municipal limits of Mula (Murcia) – or an anti-hail rocket launched by an airplane. The Civil Guard immediately activated its protocol for nuclear, radiological, bacteriological and chemical threats, and sent officers in hazmat suits to inspect the artefact. It was later confirmed to be an aerospace industry device, possibly an auxiliary fuel tank for a rocket or a satellite. This is not the first time that such objects have landed on Earth, said Civil Guard explosives experts. “A couple of years ago, similar items were found in Australia and Brazil,” said one source.

By the time it was identified, Francisco and Juan’s brother-in-law, a community manager whom the brothers contacted as soon as they found the strange object, had already done his own online research and reached his own conclusion. “The sphere looks very much like a composite overwrapped pressure vessel (COPV), possibly from a space station,” he said. “These objects are made from such resilient materials that they can survive Earth re-entry, and even catastrophic explosions, nearly intact.” On Wednesday morning, Murcia authorities were continuing to assess potential environmental risks in the area. A radioactive facilities inspector has been analysing the site with an ionization chamber, and tests have turned up negative for higher-than-normal alpha, beta and gamma emissions. The object is now at Civil Guard facilities, waiting for somebody to claim it.

Husband and wife the world left behind When the Spanish Civil War tore through Spain in 1936, thousands of people fled the country's rural towns for the cities in search of work. From these conditions emerged the unlikely love story of Juan Martin and Sinforosa Colomer - a couple who refused to abandon their small village where they have lived by themselves for the past 45 years. The couple, now aged 79 and 82 respectively, work the land and take care of a few dozen cats and dogs in a town that was once home to 200 residents. A short film by Jungles in Paris has detailed the simple but hard life the couple live in the isolated town, located around 100miles from Valencia, in the country's east. Juan Martin told the filmmakers he would have left many years ago, but his wife grew up in the city and it was there they had a daughter, who tragically died aged eight. He explained: 'Because my wife was born in this place, she has always lived here. She doesn't want to leave. 'Had it been up to me, I would have left the town a long time ago. But I can't leave her by herself.' The town, like any other rural village, once had a mayor, policeman, priest and professional teachers.

But according to Angloinfo, in the wake of a natural disaster that killed many residents, it never regained its former vibrancy. This loss of population was further exacerbated, first by the movement of population from rural towns to cities amid the Civil War, and more recently, modern demographics. In one particularly poignant moment in the film, the two are filmed eating lunch together in silence when Sinforosa gently scolds her husband. 'How much oil have you put [on the food]?' she asks. 'Don't you see the lettuce is plain?' With a grace bred by extreme familiarity, he simply chuckles at her reproach, rather than offering a retort. He told the filmmakers he met her one day when they were young as she was bringing the cattle in from the fields. From there, the couple got to know each other at the two local taverns, where dancing used to be held at the weekends.

Three million Spanish workers made less than €1,000 a month in 2014

Despite an apparent economic recovery, Spanish salaries did not experience any noticeable rise last year, while the difference between top and bottom earners increased, as did the breach between men and women, according to figures released by the National Statistics Institute (INE) on Friday. The 2014 Active Population Survey additionally shows that 4.37 million workers in Spain made less than gross €1,221.10 a month last year, with another 2.9 million failing to even reach the €1,000 mark, coming in at a monthly €972.80 or less. In 2005, the term mileurista (onethousand-euro-earner) was coined by a member of the public who wrote a letter to the editor of EL PAÍS, to describe the countless highly skilled young Spaniards who made no more than €1,000 a month despite a booming economy. Now, many people talk about nimileuristas, or not-even-one-

thousand-euro-earners. There are around three million Spaniards in this situation. And that is just looking at gross salaries. After deducting income tax and Social Security payments, and factoring in two extra payments a year that most salaried workers receive, there are more than four million Spaniards who make less than €1,000 a year, out of a total of 14.2 million included in the INE study. The average monthly salary last year was €1,881.30 gross, representing only a 0.65-percent rise (or €22.20) from 2013. Those with lower salaries experienced the smallest increases, widening the gap between those who make the most and those who make the least. There is also a gender disparity, with women’s salaries dropping an average €3.50 a month to €1,618.10, while men’s monthly checks rose €23.80 to €2,125. The INE notes that one of the main reasons for this disparity is that more women work part-time, on temporary contracts and in lower-paying sectors.

Catalan riot officer says he batoned youth’s ear “by mistake” A Catalan police officer standing trial for bodily injury told a judge on Wednesday that he had aimed his baton at the plaintiff’s legs, but was thrown off balance and hit his head instead. The incident took place in Barcelona on May 27, 2014, during street protests over the eviction of a squatter centre called Can Vies in the Sants neighbourhood. The city’s plans to tear down Can Vies were at the heart of a violent four-day confrontation between street protestors and riot police. The defendant, a member of the Mossos d’Esquadra regional police force, admitted that he was the person shown hitting Iván J. in photographs taken by an eyewitness. But he alleged that a fellow police officer got in the way of the blow, throwing him off balance and diverting the weapon towards Iván J.’s head instead of the lower half of his body - the area that police regulations dictate should be targeted. As a result of the blow, the young man had to undergo surgery to reconstruct his left ear, which was smashed by the force of the impact. In his complaint, Iván J. said that at the time of the incident he was riding his bicycle to meet his partner at Sants square, and that two officers came up to

him and hit him with the baton “without any exchange of words or motives to justify their action.” But the police officer said that the young man had addressed them in a “threatening” manner, proffering “insults.” Two other officers – including the one who allegedly got in the way of the blow and inadvertently diverted it – ratified this version of events. The police also said that they offered the youth medical assistance, but that he rejected it. Lawyers for the plaintiff expressed their regret that the officer’s superiors never opened an internal investigation into the case.

The film will continue playing in SALA 4, tonight, Wednesday and Thursday, at 6.00pm, with just the one screening each evening. It costs 5.00€ on Monday and Wednesday and 7.00€ on Tuesday. However, once the new film and culture club, Admit One, is up and running, it will only cost 5.00€ Monday thru Thursday and 7.00€ Friday, Saturday and Sunday or on Fiesta and Red Days. You don't have to be a member of the film club to enjoy an English Language film. They are open to everyone. Just look for the acronym V.O.S.E., along with the film description as this stands for Version Original Subtitulada en Español (Spanish: Original Version Subtitled in Spanish). Nick from Admit One said: “Greetings everyone and thank you for your interest in the new Admit One English language film club. We are busy having special membership cards produced with a mag strip, so that the cinema can follow your viewing of English Language films, and after ten films, your next one will be free. Also, if you wish to see a film on your birthday, that's also free. All films are first run films, and open on the same Friday night as the Spanish Language dubbed version, in Spain. On most occasions you will see it on the same night as a film is released in the UK or Ireland. The film will be shown in English for one week. Thus Thursday of the following week will be the last night it will be shown. The films play all week, for seven nights.”

All films are shown at the Cines IMF, located in the Ozone Centre, opposite the amusement arcade and bowling rink, just across the road from the Habaneras Shopping Centre. There is plenty of free parking available but to use the underground parking costs only 1.00€. The process for signing up and receiving your membership cards is still under review and we will be talking with the cinema on Tuesday to work out the Logistics. Membership to the Cultural and Film Club costs just 20.00€ to join. If you are a couple, it costs 30.00€. For children under 18 or those holding a Carnet Jove, it costs just 5.00€. Thus a family of two adults and two children under 18, the total would be 40.00€. Along with the free film options, club members will also be offered special

prices on food and drink, offers for a dinner and movie from different establishments in the Habaneras and Ozone Centres, raffles and draws to win club merchandise and film memorabilia such as posters, advertising signage and other fun stuff such as dinners, free film tickets and special film nights. They are also planning a film festival for spring 2016 and looking for sponsorship to purchase a film projector, audio equipment and screen to allow them to take the film club out and about and into the community, to allow many more people access to new and classic films around the Southern Costa Blanca. Nick continued: “We will also be organising social events and looking for members who wish to volunteer and help out at the various activities that we are planning for 2016, plus helping with membership drives, helping to establish the club, and many other items. It's your club and long may we have English Language cinema in Torrevieja. Every Tuesday evening the Cinema is informed about the films it will receive for the following week. On Wednesday we will inform everyone on our mailing list which film will be showing the following Friday, in which SALA and at what time. You can also find out this information by visiting the cinema's website: http://cinesimf.com/torrevieja.” For those who would like more information about the new club and to join their mailing list, just send an email to: film@admitone.club with 'Opt In' on the subject line and you will be kept up to date with what is happening and also how to join the club once their new 'Smart' loyalty cards are printed and ready.

Bar Carmen's

The 1st of November, heralded a milestone in El Chaparral Torrevieja as Bar Carmen's Restaurante celebrated its third birthday, and what a weekend it was!!. As usual Julie Purdy, the proud owner of the bar, pulled out all the stops to decorate this fine establishment for the Halloween dinner dance, a full house, which was enjoyed by all. The decorations were spectacular, over board, but spectacular, and the menu was traditionally spooky and delightfully tasty. As many bars have been empty and struggling during the recession I have to ask myself why Bar Carmen's continues to thrive against all the odds. There are many reasons to choose from. Is it the wonderful, home cooked food that keeps them coming back for more? Could be, as the food is fresh, traditional English fare, cooked to perfection. The portions are huge and definitely value for money. The Sunday and Wednesday carvery, with salad bar, is always of a very high standard. Varied and satisfying food, a steal, at 9.95e for three courses. Is it the warm and inviting atmosphere? The bar is tastefully decorated, the staff are extremely friendly and professional. But why would people eat and drink at the same place so frequently? I decided to talk to a few of the local customers and ask why. Outside the bar, on the terrace sat John. He’s been a regular customer of Bar Carmen’s for three years. I asked John why he used the bar and here is what he had to say. When I first move to Torrevieja, I used to call in for my coffee and to read a book in the mornings. I was soon draw in by the sense of community. Julie and Phil the landlords are forever dreaming

up ways to bring people together. They go out of their way to make people feel at home and special. It just feels like home. This sentiment was echoed by everyone I talked to that day, and it seems to me that, Bar Carmen's is a little community in itself. According to the customers, it is Julie and Phil who are the glue that holds everything together. They continuously work hard to provide excellent food and entertainment for everyone. They are always raising funds to help others, not as fortunate. For example, Elche Children s home and more recently help the Heroes, not to mention the animal charities. As an impartial observer it was obvious to me that there was no, one thing, to define this bar. It seems to work as an excellent mixture of generous hardworking management, great staff and loyal customers. Apparently Bar Carmen's has been fully booked for Christmas day lunches for months. However Julie still has availability in the diary for pre Christmastime lunches or dinners at 11.50e or 15.50e per person. (If the booking is for 20 people or more you can chose the carvery option). According to recent sources, Julie decorates the bar as a winter wonderland and pulls out all the stops. A definite sight to see. The bar has facilities for private functions and a full and varied entertainment schedule. So Happy Birthday to Julie and Phil at Bar Carmen's, congratulations all your hard work is paying off here's to many more successful years to come.

Back Stage with Paul Castle Artist Direct – Spain recently had a chat with the multi-talented Paul Castle. If you have any requirements for acts – you can search on the website or for more urgent requirements join the Book Acts Direct Facebook group dedicated to finding acts for venues and parties. Don’t forget you can add your gigs to the Coastrider Gig Guide for free whether or not you are registered on the website. Download the app and let us know or send us an email to info@artistsdirect-spain.com Who are you and what do you do? I am Paul Castle. I am a guitar/vocalist and a karaoke/disco host. I also play lead and rhythm guitar in a live guitar and bass duo called the ‘Jammy Dodgers’. How did you start in the business? I have always loved music and wanted to learn guitar to play for fun and to accompany myself singing. After a while I realized that I could actually get paid for doing it. What would you be doing if you were not an entertainer? I would be a self-employed entrepreneur. Not sure in what field but I would definitely be working for myself. As an entertainer who has been your biggest influence? There are too many to name really as I like lots of different styles. I have taken inspiration from the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Clapton, Knopfler and Eagles to

name but a few. Do you ever get nervous or have you suffered stage fright? I always have a little of both. I think that in moderation they are a good thing as they give you that little edge of adrenalin. What was your best moment? It was working in the piano bar of a big hotel in Corfu in the early nineties. The opportunity arose out of the blue when the previous artist left suddenly. What has been your worst moment? Probably having fruit and tomatoes thrown at me on my debut with my first group, called ‘Black Rat,’ in the late sixties. Suppose I should be thankful it wasn’t bottles!

What’s the best piece of advice you have received or would give someone starting out in the business? Just to keep plugging away and something will turn up. Any little anecdotes or interesting stories? A friend and I formed a duo and called ourselves ‘The Good Ol’ Boys’ which is about as “country” as you can get. Looking back though maybe we didn’t quite think things through as we were pop/rock! At our first gig everyone turned up wearing country and western gear ready for a hoedown, barn dance, big yeehaaa, whatever. If you’ve ever seen ‘The Blues Brothers’ film you’ll understand exactly how we felt. We played all these songs thinking we were the bees’ knees but all those country & western fans were singularly unimpressed. We didn’t get invited back to that venue and promptly changed our name to ‘Double Echo.’ You can see Paul’s profile and contact information so you can book him direct either as a solo guitar vocalist, karaoke/DJ or as a duo on the Artists Direct – Spain website.

After Hours at Rendezvous

Whats On Costa Blanca shared a brandy after hours with Restaurant Rendezvous this week. This restaurant is located on the commercial complex on the Altos Del Limonar urbanisation just before the new Indoor Market. You can find out their opening hours and see their menu on the website. Tell us about yourselves My name is Olga and I am originally from Belarus. I run Rendezvous Restaurant with my partner Valdas who is a chef with many years of experience. He is from Lithuania. I have been in Spain for 7 years and Valdas for 10 years. Both of us have previously worked in other restaurants over here. What made you open a bar? You mean a restaurant of course. Well when you have spent a lot of time and

gained a lot of experience working for other people you get to the stage where you want to be your own boss. Valdas was a chef in Lithuania for many years and always dreamed of having his own restaurant, a dream that fortunately for both of us I shared. Where did the inspiration for the name come from? “Rendezvous,” although a French word, has become the international word for ‘meeting place’ throughout the world. Rendezvous Restaurant is designed to be exactly that, a meeting place for people of all nationalities to get together and enjoy good food. Who does the cooking? And how would you describe your style? As the qualified chef Valdas does most of the cooking while I manage front-of-

house. He is influenced by dishes from many parts of the world but our menu is mainly aimed at the Western European market, especially the British as these days most nationalities seem to like English food. What’s your favourite dish on the menu? For me, steak. Valdas has always enjoyed cooking steaks more than anything else, stretching back to his days as a junior chef in Lithuania. Over the years he has developed many interesting variations of this. People tend to think that cooking steak is a simple process but to do it properly and keep it varied and interesting is a fine art that takes many years to develop. I always look forward to eating a steak cooked by Valdas which is

subtly different to anything I’ve tasted before. I am pleased to say that in all the years we have been together I have yet to be disappointed. Favourite day of the week? Tuesday is our special menu day where any 3 courses are available for €12.50 all day. We are always extremely busy and time usually flies by. Any interesting tales? One very busy evening a meal had been placed on the bar ready to be delivered to a customer and one of the waitresses for a reason she has never been able to explain decided it was leftovers and threw the contents of the plate into the bin. We were searching high and low for this missing meal while the poor lady waiting for it was becoming more and more irate. It was embarrassing at the time but very funny looking back. Get smart: increase your brain power What can you do to make the most of your little grey cells and boost your brain power? Brain boosting method: meditation Science 'Tuning out' thoughts while awake has a physical effect on the brain. According to Harvard and Yale researchers, meditation increases the brain’s thickness in the parts that deal with attention and processing external information. Is it for you? If the thought of sitting in the lotus position and chanting doesn’t appeal, don’t worry. Meditation can take place wherever you feel comfortable, so long as it’s quiet. Although it’s not a difficult skill to master, you will need some training or advice to help you clear your mind of all thoughts. If you’re willing to put a bit of time in, though, you can learn to do it anywhere at any time. Verdict Meditation can be a great way to unwind. It reduces stress, improves mood and sharpens your mind. Brain boosting method: omega-3 oil Science Fish aren’t renowned for their brain power, but the oil contained within them could improve your mental clarity. One study among many, undertaken at the University of Siena in Italy, found that people who took omega-3 supplements had improved mood and cognition. The researchers concluded that a diet rich in fish oil is associated with better attention, and improved complex cortical processing. In layman’s terms, that means eating fish oil helps keep the cogs in your mind functioning smoothly. Is it for you? The official recommendation is to eat two or three servings of cold-water fish, such as herring, fresh tuna, salmon, or mackerel per week, and if you do then you’ll already be experiencing the benefits of omega-3s. "Other foods rich in the oil are pumpkin seeds, walnuts and flaxseed, though the omega-3s from fish are easier for the body to use than those from these vegetarian sources," says nutritionist Carina Norris. "It's a good idea to get as much omega-3 from your diet as you can, but in order to consume enough to get the full heart and brain benefits, you'll probably need to take a supplement." Verdict Not all omega-3 supplements are created equal. "There are several different kinds of omega-3, not all of which have identical benefits," says Norris. "EPA –

eicosapentaenoic acid, and DHA – docosahexaenoic acid, are the two most important forms and it’s these you should look for on the label." Brain boosting method: running, cycling or dancing Science "Randomised, controlled trials have shown that aerobic exercise increases cognitive function – especially the speed of mental processing and our ability to pay attention to things – in healthy, sedentary elders," says Professor Deborah Barnes, of the University of California, who has studied the effects of exercise on the brain. It may also help prevent 'executive function' decline in people over 70, says Barnes. Executive functioning includes focusing on a task, short-term memory and the ability to judge social situations and behave appropriately within them. Is it for you? With side effects such as a flatter stomach, a stronger heart and reduced risk of disease, this is one brainbooster everyone should try. Verdict Do it. Sign up for a class at your nearest gym, cycle or jog with your partner or a friend, or just stick on some music and get down to it in your living room. Brain boosting method: brain training Science You can exercise your brain just like any other muscle. Studies on rodents and monkeys have shown that if they play with toys they learn more easily, have bigger brains and brain cells. Another recent study conducted by Kings College London, published in the Journal of Post-Acute and Long-term Care Medicine, found that playing online

Are you having a bad age day? Sometimes, when you look in the mirror, it's as though you have aged 10 years overnight and you ask yourself what's gone wrong? • dry and parched skin • puffy and shadowed eyes • lank hair • saggy cheeks Drink up and reduce puffiness More often than not fluid retention is to blame for a puffy face. If the body becomes dehydrated it tries to hold on to all the water it can and as a result blood vessels enlarge and your face swells up.

Have a glass of water as soon as you wake up and then another on the hour, every hour. And don't forget that last glass before you settle down to sleep. Check your diet for essential fats According to the experts, a lack of essential fats in your diet could be one reason why you wake up looking more wrinkled than usual. Your body is 66% water. This is held in cells that have membranes of fat which need essential fats to support them. Eating oily fish such as mackerel, herring or sardines three times a week can help. Puffy eye rescue Puffiness (or oedema) can be due to poor lymphatic circulation, says Vicci Bentley, author of Lose Ten Years in Ten Minutes a Day (Orion) Excess fluid floods the spaces between fatty tissue, especially after long periods of lying down – hence early morning puffy eyes. Here's how to disperse the trapped fluid: • Using your finger tips, lightly circle the eye orbits, following the contours of the sockets. • Firmly but still gently, stroke several times from the bridge of the nose out across the eyebrows.

games that challenge reasoning and memory skills – brain training - could have significant benefits for older people in their day-to-day lives. The study was funded by the Alzheimer's Society and involved almost 7,000 adults aged over 50. You can try out their demo game at www.alzheimers.org.uk/braintraining. Is it for you? Brain training in the form of learning a new language, playing Sudoku or even video games, is most likely to be effective on people who have repetitive and unstimulating day jobs. Verdict The best activities challenge you in ways you’re not accustomed to, encouraging your brain to create new neural pathways. If you work with numbers, sign up to learn French; if you’re a salesperson, try something that requires visual-spatial skills such as carpentry; or if you work in computer technology, take an art class. Brain boosting method: caffeine Science You probably don’t need boffins to tell you that caffeine keeps you awake, but what may surprise you is that research also shows it can impair certain types of brain function. Researchers at the University of California found that although caffeine improved alertness and concentration, it slowed motor learning and verbal memory. Is it for you? Coffee is such a part of our everyday culture that we tend to forget it’s an addictive stimulant, not so different in its physical effects from illegal amphetamines! It causes the release of adrenalin, which is what makes you feel awake. And caffeine also affects dopamine levels, giving you a mild 'high'. If you drink more than three cups of coffee a day or five of tea (around 300mg) and stop suddenly, you’ll probably experience withdrawal symptoms. Thankfully not as severe as if you suddenly quit cocaine or heroin, though still unpleasant. Expect to experience fatigue, irritability and headaches. Verdict Caffeine has a half life of about six hours, which means that if you drink a large cup of coffee at 3pm you’ve still got the equivalent of half a cup circulating in your blood stream when you’re beginning to get ready for sleep. "If you must use caffeine to get through the day, have one cup at around 11am as a pick-me-up," says Norris. "That will give you a through-lunch boost but won’t keep you awake at night." • Use the last three fingertips of both hands to tap lightly along the cheekbone ridge. Use a light drumming action as though you are playing a piano and work from the inner to the outer eye corners. Move those muscles Facial exercises can also help dissolve signs of strain and tiredness by boosting circulation to facial tissue. Try the following to bring back a healthy glow. • Lie down and pull your upper and lower lips apart into a long oval. • Press your upper lip firmly against your teeth. • Use the corners of your mouth to smile, then relax. • Repeat 10 times. Now repeat, lifting your head 2.5cm from the pillow. Hold for a count of 30. Repeat entire sequence three times. Moisturise, moisturise While you sleep skin turnover speeds up so last thing at night is the ideal time for applying moisturiser as it's absorbed by the skin at a faster rate. Look for creams containing the antioxidant vitamins A, C and E which will help in the war against free radicals, unstable molecules that can wreak havoc with skin cells. Beware of overdoing the amount, though, as this can also lead to puffiness.

How to Get Rid of Dry Skin for Good Dry skin can speed up the aging process. Moisture is a key element in the core functions of the integumentary system. It is needed to lubricate collagen fibres. If collagen fibres are not getting the moisture they need, they turn dry and brittle. They become more susceptible to damages. You don't have to suffer from dry skin condition anymore. Use the following tips and prolong young looking skin: 1. Did you know that your skin turns dry and flaky at night? That being said, you have to make sure that your dermis is properly hydrated before going to sleep. Drink a glass of water. It will help nourish your cells and tissues. Also apply a good moisturizing cream on your face and all over your body before hitting the sack. Use a dehumidifier too. Place it a foot away from your bed. This will keep your skin dewy and soft during the night. After using these tips, your skin will surely look healthy and moist. 2. Exfoliation is the key. Most people suffer from dry skin condition because they do not regularly exfoliate their dermis. This leads to the accumulation of dead skin cells in the pores. Rub your hands on the surface of your dermis. If it feels rough, it means you need a good scrub. Mix yogurt, brown sugar and honey. Apply this on your damp skin. Carefully massage the scrub all over your dermis. Let it sit there for about 10 minutes before washing it off with lukewarm water. Use this treatment twice a week for better results. 3. After bathing, wipe your skin dry and apply a good hydrating cream. There are different types of

moisturizers out there. Some contain more effective emollient ingredients. You should look for products that have been loaded with Phytessence Wakame, Manuka Honey and CynergyTK. Phytessence Wakame is a kind of Japanese sea kelp that can get rid of harmful enzymes. These enzymes tend to break down hyaluronic acid, the acid that lubricates collagen fibres. Manuka Honey contains humectant properties. It can penetrate the inner layers of your skin to lubricate cells and tissues. CynergyTK can augment missing keratin in your dermis. Keratin is needed to promote a steady growth of collagen fibres. 4. I suggest drinking lemonade daily. Fresh lemonade is rich in vitamin C. This vitamin can keep collagen fibres hydrated. It will also maintain healthy and young looking skin. Moreover, this vitamin prevents the depletion of collagen fibres.

Foods that Fight Wrinkles Wrinkles may be an inevitable part of aging, but that doesn't mean fighting them is useless. Protecting your skin from exposure to ultraviolet radiation is the most significant thing you can do to prevent wrinkles, sagging, and discoloration. Some people try invasive techniques, such as chemical peels, Botox, dermal fillers, or surgery. But those efforts are all done from the outside. What

about protecting your skin from the inside? Researchers from Australia, Greece and Sweden, led by Martalena br Purba of Monash University, Melbourne, studied 450 people aged 70 or more to see if there was a link between how wrinkly they were and what they ate. They found that those who ate mainly vegetables, olive oil, fish, legumes, low-fat milk products and tea were the least

wrinkled. Based on the research findings, here’s a comprehensive list of what you should eat and drink to protect yourself against wrinkles: • Green leafy vegetables • Vegetables especially spinach, eggplant, asparagus, celery, onions, leeks, and garlic • Vegetable juice • Water and tea • Legumes especially broad beans and lima beans • Fruit especially cherries, grapes, melon, apple, prunes, pears, fruit salad, dried fruits • Olive oil, and other monounsaturated fats including nuts and olives • Polyunsaturated oil • Yogurt • Cheese • Sardines • Eggs • Multigrain bread The magic ingredients for protecting against wrinkles seem to be monounsaturated fat, vitamin C, retinol, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron and zinc.

The Benefits of Protein Shakes

Your body needs two main food group sources to perform normally every day. The first group supplies energy and consists of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. The second group supplies building materials consisting of proteins, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and many other micro-elements. Protein is formed from amino acids. Many of the 21 amino acids can be made by the body from carbohydrates, but the nine essential amino acids must be provided by the diet. Protein shakes can provide a healthy meal for helping to maintain balanced nutrition, essential vitamins, amino acid, minerals and nutrients in your body. Many protein shakes include soy protein, fiber and essential nutrients that can help support metabolism, cellular growth, repair and production. They have also been shown to relieve menopause symptoms, facilitate memory improvement and contribute to a healthy prostate. Diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol that include 25 grams of soy protein may reduce the risk of heart disease. It is a well known fact that protein shakes can be used for both weight loss and enhanced performance. It only takes about thirty minutes for the protein from shakes to reach the muscle after ingestion whereas solid food proteins could take an hour or longer. It is important to understand that your muscle tissue needs protein to maintain itself and when your body does not get enough protein, one of the first places it will get protein is from your muscle tissue. During strenuous workouts your body actually breaks down muscle cells and therefore by taking a protein shake immediately after a workout you are effectively giving the body the necessary building materials to repair existing and produce new lean muscle tissue. Soy protein from protein shakes also contributes to the body's ability to burn fat because as you consume more protein you increase your metabolism which enables your body to burn stored fat instead of storing more fat. Increased protein intake also appears to suppress the appetite and therefore helps reduce a person's overall calorie intake. Protein shakes are an easy and healthy solution for effective weight loss. They are a quick and nutritious solution for one or two meals a day and can be a fast meal that can be conveniently enjoyed in the office or on the run without having to sacrifice your daily nutritional needs. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps to neutralize free radicals, the unstable oxygen molecules produced by pollution, stress and sun. Free radicals attack healthy skin cells and cause collagen breakdown, all of which lead to wrinkles. Antioxidants — found in green tea, vitamins C and E, and coenzyme Q10 — work together to neutralize free radicals. Vitamin A is one of the fatsoluble vitamins and retinol is one of its most active forms. Retinol is required for growth and reproduction of the skin, and differentiation of epithelial tissue. This is important because your skin ages over time and the results are wrinkles, rough texture, discolorations, and

thinning. Retinol is an essential fat-soluble vitamin that is used to combat these negative effects and promote healthy skin. This vitamin is found in animal foods such as liver and eggs and in some fortified food products. Iron helps bring oxygen to the skin thus giving your skin enough air to breathe, while zinc promotes cell repair and growth, and is a key member of a group of enzymes that helps to maintain collagen supply. Without zinc, the enzymes that rebuild new collagen do not function properly. The researchers concluded that people with the most wrinkles lunched on full-fat dairy foods, butter, margarine, red meat, soft drinks, cakes and pastries

House Prices Register Second Quarterly Rise Since 2007 The average price of second hand housing for sale in Spain stood at 1,646 euros/m2 in September, according to the latest real estate index prepared by fotocasa.es, and registered an increase of 0.7% in the third quarter of the year. This represents the second quarterly rise, and the lowest year-on-year increase registered in a quarter, since 2007. House prices in Spain reached their maximum levels in April 2007 with a value of 2,952 euros/m2. Since then, prices have accumulated an average decline of -44.3%. The regions which have registered greater than average declines in house prices since their peak levels are La Rioja, with an accumulated decline of -54.1%, Navarra (-51.3%), Aragón (-51.3%), Castilla-La Mancha (51%), Murcia (-48.1%), Valencia (-46.9%) and Catalonia (-46%). In contrast, the regions which have accumulated lower price declines are Galicia (-31.4%), the Balearic Islands (-33.1%) and the Basque Country (-35.9%). In the month of September prices registered a year-on-year decline of 0.1%. However, this is the lowest decline registered in a quarter of a year since November 2007, when a year-on-year price decline was registered for the first time. The portal highlighted the fact that prices rose in July, by 0.1% year-on-year, which represented the first rise since October 2007.

Compared to June 2015, eleven regions recorded quarter-on-quarter increases, the greatest being for the Canary Islands (+3.4%), Cantabria (+1.4%) and Murcia (+1.3%), while six regions registered quarter-on-quarter declines, lead by Aragón and the Basque Country (both -2.1%), followed by the Balearic Islands (-0.9%), La Rioja (-0.7%), the Canary Islands and Castilla y León (both -0.6%). In terms of average prices, in September the most expensive regions for second hand housing were the Basque Country (2,818 euros/m2), Madrid (2,235 euros/m2) and Catalonia (2,087 euros/m2), while the regions with the most affordable second hand housing were Castilla-La Mancha (1,085 euros/m2), Extremadura (1,138 euros/m2) and Murcia (1,193 euros/m2). On a provincial level, 28 of the 50 analysed registered quarter-on-quarter price increases, the greatest being Almeria (+3.8%), followed by Las Palmas (+3.5%) and Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Malaga (both with +3.2%), while the province with the greatest decline in prices in this quarter was Toledo (-6.3%).

Spain is seeing a spectacular turnaround in its higher end property market Spain is seeing a spectacular turnaround in its higher end property market A renewed confidence amongst buyers, low prices and the Spanish banks’ willingness to offer competitive mortgages is attracting increasing numbers of new buyers in the country, according to a new analysis. In Spain’s major cities, international buyers are now beginning to compete against local buyers to secure the best properties in prime locations, according to the report from Lucas Fox covering the first six months of 2015. Indeed, Spain is seeing a ‘spectacular’ turnaround in its property market, according to the firm’s founding partner Alexander Vaughan. The report says that Barcelona is expected to be the most significant year of recovery for the prime residential property market in the past seven years. Prices have stabilised in the past 12 to 18 months, and international interest for turnkey properties is forcing up demand, alongside renewed confidence amongst

local buyers. In Maresme, whereas in previous years local buyers accounted for as little as 20% of Lucas Fox’s sales enquiries, this figure is now closer to 50% and there has been a substantial increase in the number of sales transactions to local clients. The report also says that on the Costa Brava, sales in the first half of the year have been dominated by Northern European buyers with British, French, Swiss, Dutch and Scandinavian buyers being the most active. On Ibiza, while national averages of property prices continued to decline slightly throughout 2014 and are levelling off in 2015, average prices in Ibiza have seen increases since the start of 2013. In Marbella, sales have increased across the region, leading to a shortage of good quality properties in prime locations. Turnkey projects are selling so fast that Lucas Fox is seeing regular price increases of new off plan properties coming onto the market while in Valencia, the first quarter of 2015 has seen an increase of 14% for property resales. Madrid continues to attract more and more investment from both national and international investors. Lucas Fox data suggests that 60% of clients buy for investment purposes and 20% for the so called golden visa that allows nonEuropean Union citizens to live in the country if they invest in real estate.

Chicken & chorizo rice pot

Ingredients • 1 tbsp oil • 8 chicken pieces or 1 whole chicken, jointed • 1 large onion, chopped • 1 red pepper, deseeded and chopped into large chunks • 3 garlic cloves, crushed • 225g chorizo, skinned and sliced • 1 tbsp tomato purée • 1 tbsp thyme leaf, chopped • 150ml white wine • 850ml chicken stock • 400g long grain rice • 2 tbsp chopped parsley Method 1. Heat the oil in a large flameproof casserole dish and brown the chicken pieces on all sides – you may have to do this in batches. Remove from the dish and put to one side.

2. Lower the heat, add the onion and pepper, and gently cook for 10 mins until softened. Add the garlic and chorizo, and cook for a further 2 mins until the chorizo has released some of its oils into the dish. Stir in the tomato purée and cook for 1 min more. 3. Return the chicken pieces to the dish along with the thyme, white wine and stock. Bring the liquid to a boil, cover the dish with a tight-fitting lid and lower the heat. Cook for 30 mins. 4. Tip in the rice and stir everything together. Cover, set over a low heat and cook for a further 15 mins, or until the rice is cooked and has absorbed most of the cooking liquid. Remove from the heat and leave the dish to sit for 10 mins to absorb any remaining liquid. Season to taste and scatter with parsley to serve.

George Barris, creator of the Batmobile, dies at 89 Barris designed and built the black, fire-spitting vehicle for the 1960s Batman television series. His son Brett announced in a Facebook post that Barris, known as the “King of the kustomizers”, had died at home in his sleep on 5 November. The notification said: “Sorry to have to post that my father, legendary kustom car king George Barris, has moved to the bigger garage in the sky.” Barris also created vehicles for the Eighties TV show “Knight Rider”, as well as creating cars for “The Munsters” and “The Beverly Hillbillies” in the Sixties. His cars also appeared in the 1959 Alfred Hitchcock movie “North by Northwest”. He also customised cars for celebrities, including Frank Sinara, Elvis Presley and Burt Reynolds. Barris opened a car rebuilding company with his brother Sam in Los Angeles in 1945. Although his brother left the business in the Fifties, Barris continued, and Barris Kustom Industries remains in operation today. Barris said that his company made the Batmobile in two weeks from a 1955 Lincoln Futra concept sedan that he had bought for just one dollar. In 2013, that same Batmobile sold at auction for more

than $4 million. In the Batman television show, the Batmobile was powered by atomic batteries with a radar scope and “bat beam.” The car was slowed down with parachutes which really worked – Barris was once pulled over on the Hollywood Freeway for using them. Batman was not the vehicle’s first television appearance; it was initially used in the 1959 film, “It Started with a Kiss”. He converted the car in 15 days for $15,000 for Batman when an earlier design by Barris’ rival Dean Jeffries couldn’t be made in time. Barris also pioneered small, plastic models of his most famous cars. The models popularised his imaginative vehicles, and millions of American children enjoyed assembling them in the Fifties, Sixties and Seventies.

CD Torrevieja, beat Benigánim UD 2-1 Torrevieja came out on top on Sunday's high-noon game with Benigánim. With both teams equal on points, close to the relegation zone half of the table, the pressure was much more on Torrevieja to deliver. Thankfully, two well taken goals at the beginning of each half were enough to give the blue and whites all three points as they climb towards mid table. Two set pieces led to the goals from Rubén Suárez assisted by Quintero and Javi Selvas. However, after the second goal, Torrevieja started to get a little sloppy in defence and midfield, giving the ball away, not completing passes and giving away many an unnecessary free kick within striking distance of the Torry goal, all of which turned the open flowing game into a tense affair in the second half. Subs: Koeman saluted his old acquaintances from which he played for Torrevieja. Having looked comfortable with their two goal lead, and looking for more, it was former Torrevieja player Koeman who turned the tide and put Torry under pressure for the rest of the game when in the 62nd minute he stole the ball from midfield and went on a run towards goal. After what seemed like a comedy of errors with Torry unable to clear the ball out of defence,

Koeman ended up with the ball again and scored himself, setting up a very nervous half hour for the home team and fans as they just waited for that final whistle. As seems to be customary at this level of play in Spain, referee Carrillo García, from Elche, was busy flashing cards with Torrevieja receiving four yellows for Rubén Suárez, Javi Selvas, Jorge and Lewis, with the visitors just pipping Torry with six for Koeman, Fran, Fageca, Édgar, Palací and Manel. Club Deportivo Torrevieja: Miguel Serna, Vicente Boix, Adrián Banderas, Javi Selvas, Quintero, Jorge, Brani (Sánchez 76’), Martín (Matej 62’), César (Luis Carlos 79’), Rubén Suárez and Lewis. Not used: Óscar and Burguillos. Entrenador: Antonio Pedreño Saura. Unión Deportiva Benigánim: Vaello, Francesc Borrás (Ramiro 55’), Piquer, Manel, Édgar, Rivera (Éric 79’), Juan Antonio (Palací 77’), Fran, Koeman, Miguel and Fageca. Not used: Francesc Benavent and Jordan. Entrenador: Alfonso López Langa, who was banned from the bench but coached from the stand, just two metres away from his bench. Next Sunday, November 15th, CD Torrevieja play away from home against CD Buñol at the Estadio Beltrán Baguena, with a 5.00pm kick off. The last home game of the month is against Paterna CF on

Sunday 22nd, with the kick off time still to be announced. Torrevieja now move to 14th in the Division with next week's opponents CD Buñol sitting just above the relegation zone. A win on Sunday could see them up to 12th and with Paterna also being mid table, the next two games are very important. In December, the club only has two games all month, with the last home game of the year being on Sunday 13rh December against UD Rayo Ibense, returning to Vicente Garcia in the New Year with two home games in a row, on the 3rd and the 10th against CD Acero and Ontinyent CF.

Torry's future stars

This season Torrevieja's Municipal Sports schools have added two younger age groups, for those six and seven years old, in the pre-benjamin category. Last week the seven year olds had a try-out session to pick the lucky 30 boys or girls to make up this season's two teams of 15, who will start to play in the New Year. Meanwhile the six year olds have also started their first training sessions under the watchful eye of Casimiro Torres and Joaquin Sala, who are responsible for the Football schools and development. We wish all of those in the youngest category the very best of fun and fortune playing football in Torrevieja.

CD Dolores CF remain undefeated

By Andrew Atkinson CD Dolores CF remain undefeated at the top of the Segunda Regional Grupo 15 following a 2-0 away win at Dep. Orihuela on Saturday. They have now chalked up eight victories from eight games, bagging 32 goals and conceding just three. CD Benijofar are hanging onto the leaders coat-tails in second spot after a 1-0 away win at CD Almoradi B: their sixth win of the campaign. Among the pacesetters third placed SS Fulgencio won away 3-0 at San Isidro - who remain rock bottom still seeking their

first win. RP Orihuela thrashed Collosa Dep. B 5-0 away, to take fourth spot in the table. And G. Calliche racked up six goals in a 6-2 win against CD Borneo. On Sunday CD Montesinos FC travelled to second bottom club Formentera CF, looking to continue their early season form, with just one defeat under new coach Roberto Cases. RESULTS (Saturday Nov 7): Dep. Orihuela 0-2 CD Dolores CF; Callosa Dep. B 0-5 RP Orihuela; San Isidro 0-3 SS Fulgencio; G. Calliche 6-2 CD Borneo; CD Almoradi 0-1 CD Benijofar.

Football y Fútbol The Gossip scribes are out in force after both Chelsea and Real Madrid lost and the top club, Manchester City, was held to a goalless draw by bottom club, Aston Villa. Starting with the Sunday Express, they say that Chelsea have a shortlist of three potential interim managers former bosses Roberto Di Matteo and Guus Hiddink, and ex-Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers - if Jose Mourinho is sacked. The Blues are also "on red alert" as Argentine coach Diego Simeone, 45, is set to quit Atletico Madrid in the summer say Sunday People. Chelsea's current plight dominates most of Sunday's back pages, including the

Mourinho

Mail on Sunday who noted Mourinho appeared to defy his FA stadium ban by communicating with Chelsea assistants Steve Holland and Rui Faria during the defeat by Stoke. Former Manchester United and Everton midfielder Phil Neville enjoyed a curious treble of victories over the weekend. Neville, along with four of his former United team-mates, co-owns Northern Premier League side Salford City, but had to follow their 2-0 FA Cup first-round win over Notts County via Twitter from Spain. That was because, as assistant manager of Valencia, he was preparing for Saturday's La Liga trip to a Celta Vigo side who began the weekend in third place. Valencia have underperformed so far this season, but chalked up an extraordinary 5-1 win, as

Paco Alcacer Paco Alcacer and Dani Parejo scored twice, with former Everton fringe player Shkodran Mustafi also on target. Two great results for Neville, then - and to complete the hattrick, his former club United beat West Brom 2-0 in the Premier League. No wonder he was happy on Saturday evening. From 4-0 down... to victory against eight men as three TSV Neumarkt players were sent off as they lost a four-goal lead to lose 5-4 at SV Seekirchen. Austrian third-tier football rarely garners international attention, but one result in the Regionalliga West on Saturday can only be described as mind boggling. It came in the match between neighbours SV Seekirchen and TSV Neumarkt, who both play a few miles from the city of Salzburg. Neumarkt, in the bottom half of the table, were looking to bounce back from a 6-0 hammering at Kitzbuhel a week earlier, and looked well set after going 4-0 up inside 32 minutes. Then it all rather fell apart. Seekirchen, chasing promotion, pulled two goals back before the interval, and when Bernhard Rosslhuber made it 4-3 in the first minute of the second half, the visitors must have been feeling jittery. Astonishing scenes followed. Midfielder Ingo Enzenberger was the first of three Neumarkt players sent off, with team-mates Leonhard Ettlmayer and Bernhard

Huber Rieder following after Rosslhuber had scored his second to make it 4-4. The visitors, reduced to eight men, hung on grimly until the 89th minute, when Michael Aigner snatched a Seekirchen winner to complete the most extraordinary of comebacks. Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse, 21, believes it is getting harder for the Saints' academy players to break into the first team because the quality of the squad is so high. Liverpool duo Jordon Ibe, 19, and Divock Origi, 20, are among 13 Premier League players on a 40-strong shortlist to win the Golden Boy award - handed to the best player under the age of 21 in Europe.
