After nearly a week of searching, the Bethlehem Nativity scene, that's made up of more than 250 parts and valued at 27,000€ was found. The crib is stored in a warehouse in Pilar de la Horadada by an association of nativity scenes. The company is normally hired by the town to assemble and disassemble the huge miniature scene but has not done so this year because the Council aims to save costs. The company received at least 5,000€ for this work every year. The company in whose care the Belen was has a museum of private nativity scenes and apart from storage costs, they took the pieces to clean and keep after the installation last year, as has been done in other years. The Councillor for Fiestas, Africa Celdrán indicated that the head of the association Belenista Pilar de la Horadada usually handled the assembly and disassembly of the Belen contacted them after hearing that they had 'gone missing', when this was not the case. . " The Craftsman from Belenista issued their own statement: “On behalf of our association Belenista want to give a statement about what happened in recent days

accusations. What just happened was a mistake in the packing when collecting the scene. For many years we have charged a fee for carrying out our work for assembly, disassembly and maintenance, to install decorative items made in our workshop, and remain in safety on our property and without charge to the local council. We also perform minor repairs of faults and painting Bethlehem. This is ALSO NO COST for the beautification of what we consider one of our creations. The incidence happened at the time of the collection these elaborate plaster elements, which have a considerable weight, equivalent to the terracotta figures packed in the same type of boxes that arrived at our workshop and are stored with the other boxes of accessories of our work until the following Christmas. On opening the boxes to get ready other displays, we discovered the Torrevieja Belen. We regret what happened and just wanted to clarify the facts, which after 15 years of development of this municipal Belen has never had any kind of impact. "We are delighted that the town of Torrevieja can continue to enjoy their Belen Monument.''

Bethlehem figures appear by 'magic'

with the "mystery' of the disappearance of the Belen. We wanted to give you first-hand our version of what happened, as we read all these different headlines and

Carols in the Square The 13th Carols in the Square will take place on Friday 11th December, 2015, in the Plaza de la Costitucion, in front of Inmaculada church. The free, festive gathering will start around 5.00pm and get into full swing shorting before 6.00pm. The event will be followed by the 'international 'mass', dedicated to the non-Spanish community as part of the 'novena' of the patronal fiestas. This year will mark the tenth anniversary of the singing of Christmas Carols in the town square by the international

community. On this particular evening the mass will be dedicated to the 'foreign' residents of Torrevieja of whatever nationality. Local ministers from other churches such as the Anglicans, Church of Sweden, Norway, Finland etc., have been involved in some of the advance planning and it is anticipated that we shall all join together to sing at least one Christmas Carol where the music, albeit not the words, is internationally recognised. An integral part of the celebration will once again, be the offering

of non-perishable foodstuffs, (tinned food, packets etc.) which will later be distributed to the needy of the town so that, they too, may enjoy the festive season. Previously, the 'foreigners' have demonstrated an incredible generosity and there were more gifts received during the 'foreigners mass' than on any other evening! Everyone is welcome to come along to the event and several local clubs and associations will, no doubt, be collecting 'goody bags' from their members in order to present a 'joint effort'. Please come along and support this worthwhile effort. This Christmas marks the thirteenth anniversary of the annual “Christmas Carols in the Town Square”. This popular and unique event has taken place each December in Torrevieja’s Plaza de la Consitución since 2003. The overwhelming success of previous “Christmas’s Carols in English” events, the singing of Christmas Carols in the main town square by members of various local choral groups accompanied by the PHOENIX CONCERT BAND, has resulted in the fact that this popular event becoming a permanent fixture on

Torrevieja’s Christmas cultural programme. The public are invited to come along to the main town square and join in the singing of Christmas Carols, mostly in English but with a few in Spanish. Song sheets will be available and a collection will be made on behalf of local charity. Last year, well over three thousand people gathered in the main town square to enjoy this typical Christmas celebration, so make sure you get there early. As noted in the Coastrider this week, now that the display has been 're-discovered' the spectacular and typical nativity scene (“Belen”) will be on public display in time for the ‘Carols in the Square’. The “Belen” will stay open, 24-hours a day, until after the visit by the ‘Three Kings’ on 6th January. The Phoenix Concert band will be performing at the Carol

Service. The band, which is based in San Miguel de la Salinas, has brass, woodwind and percussion players. Some are resident in Spain but others are extremely committed and remain here for long periods so that they can rehearse and perform with the band at their concerts. New members who can commit are always welcome. Their Musical Director, Julie Schofield, has numerous qualifications in the field of banding and conductorship. She has been at the helm now since March 2013 and the band have gone from strength to strength. This will also be their 13th year performing as on December 11th, along with many local choirs and performance groups, they will be ding the music and accompanying thousands of people of all Nationalities in Torrevieja.

Cinema Club gets closer The formation of the 'Admit One' cine and culture club is taking a few extra steps forward as their tam of volunteers work feverishly behind the scenes to get things organised. They also wished to highlight a couple of questions that have been asked about. Will there be an English Language Film next week? Unless you hear from Admit One or from CINES IMF, there will always be an English Language VOSE film showing at the CINES IMF. CINES IMF website: Their website link is: http://cinesimf.com. Just click on 'Torrevieja' once you have accessed the site. If you select a particular film, it will show you the times the film is showing. If the words VOSE appears beside the film, it is showing in English Language with Spanish Subtitles. Cinema Club Sign Up: This will begin this week, and an email will be sent out to everyone that wishes to join the club with the details they require, that will then be added to your 'smart' Membership card. Film Frequency: Films are screened for seven nights. The first night, unless otherwise informed, will be on Friday. The final screening will be on Thursday. Admission Prices: 5.00€ > Monday and Wednesday. 7.00€ > All other nights and fiesta days. Club Prices: 5.00€ Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. 7.00€ Friday, Saturday and Sunday plus Fiesta Days At the moment Admit One have more than 300 people who have Opted In to stay in touch by email with updates sent to them, usually on Tuesday or Wednesday informing them of the next film to be shown in English, before news of this has even hit their official web site. As soon as the new club is officially launched, members will only be charged 5.00€ Monday thru Thursday, with special discounts, member only screenings, a film festival, raffles, and their membership card will double as a loyalty card; after ten films your next one is free, with free entry also given on your birthday.

In a press release: Nick from Admit One added: “We are producing the new membership cards this week. They have to be sequentially numbered, one by one, so the printing process is slow. Thanks for your patience in waiting for everything to be put into place. Those wishing to join, can drop into the CMO, the glass building behind Carrefour on the last Monday of the Month, when we'll be there at the meeting of the U3A from about 10.30 to 1.00pm. Other venues will be announced shortly.” Nick added: “Once we are up and running, we will be looking for volunteers to help with the running and promotion of the club. If you have the time and inclination to help out, your assistance will be much appreciated. Just drop us a line to: film@admitone.club and thanks for your offer to help. You can also pre-book for future films at the Ticket window for a future screening or visit the Cines IMF website, http://cinesimf.com/torrevieja/and follow the links. As soon as they are available, future film screening times are also available on their website: http://cinesimf.com/torrevieja” This week, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, CINES IMF are offering two films for you to enjoy during the week. Friday's new film will be announced by email to all those who have opted in, on Wednesday. Thru Thursday

News 3 Gardening SALA 1: is showing MARTE/MARTIAN at 6.30pm. In SALA 4: SPECTRE is showing all week long at 6.00pm. Looking forward to next week, there is a good chance that Tom Hanks new blockbuster 'Bridge of Spies' will be screened in VOSE. This opens in Spain on Thursday, November 26th. This WILL NOT be confirmed until tomorrow, Wednesday. This is one of the English Language films they used in their cinema trailer for the VSOE films, so the expectations are good that this will screen in VOSE on Black Friday, 27th November. Don't forget that next weekend is also the final weekend of Ruta de la Tapa in Torrevieja, so if you want a cheap snack before or after the film, you might want to visit one of the 57 bars and restaurants taking part. The cinema only finds out on Tuesday or Wednesday each week, what if any new films they will be receiving on Thursday of the following week. They are trying to get advance notice but for a brand new film, they will not know until the same week the film is released in Spain. Some of the major films being released before 2016 include: Bridge of Spies: Black Mass: Doctor Zhivago (special edition): Victor Frankenstein: By The Sea: Grandma: To Be Frank: Sinatra at 100: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (3D): In the heart of the Sea. Prior to the launch of the English Language Films at CINES IMF, a number of popular films were released in Spain and the UK, these are either no longer in distribution, had limited release or not released in Spain but they are trying to see if they can be shown as an additional film. This would mean that the film would be an additional film and a first run film would also be shown. These would not replace a first run film. These include: Lady in The Van: Man from Uncle: Fast 7: Steve Jobs: Hungergames Part II: Rocky Horror Picture Show, 40th Anniversary: Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans: Burnt: Terminator Genisys (3D): The Choir: Ant Man: Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation: Fantastic Four: Billy Fury - The Sound Of Fury: The Transporter Refuelled: The Intern: Jurassic World: Avengers: Age of Ultron: Inside Out BV: Minions: Cinderella (2015) and if they must: 50 Shades of Grey.

Cocaine smuggler jailed after fleeing ‘most wanted’ campaign in Spain One of the UK’s most wanted fugitives, captured after being on the run for nearly two years in Spain, has been sentenced at the Old Bailey in London to 13 years 4 months in prison for his role in a major international drug smuggling operation. Anthony Dennis, aged 48, from Ongar, Essex, plotted with criminals in the UK and overseas to import up to three tonnes of cocaine worth hundreds of millions of euros into Europe. Dennis and his co-conspirator Anthony Wilson, aged 38, from Harlow, Essex, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison, were identified following an investigation by the National Crime Agency (NCA) in cooperation with the Dutch National Police. Dennis went on the run in Spain after his Netherlandsbased associates failed to remove 67.5 kilos of cocaine from a shipping container at Antwerp in Belgium, which was later discovered and seized by the German authorities. He was then featured in the joint Spanish–UK Operation Captura campaign, which highlights the UK’s ‘most wanted’ fugitives. After his face appeared on a mobile digital billboard that was touring Spanish beach resorts this summer, he returned to the UK and was arrested in Hertfordshire. Dennis and

Wilson were sentenced at the Old Bailey on 18 November after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit a foreign drug trafficking offence. The men had been regulars at a café in Rotterdam that hid a global operations centre for international drug traffickers. The café could only be entered via a buzzer system and provided a meeting place where criminals negotiated with cartel members and

arranged the financing and transportation of huge quantities of drugs. Dutch police officers covertly recorded meetings that proved Dennis and Wilson were sourcing cocaine from South America and arranging its transport in shipping containers carrying legitimate cargo. Their associates were then responsible for extracting the drugs using corrupt port officials. Brendan Foreman, the NCA’s Regional Head of Investigations, said: “Dennis and Wilson joined forces with international criminals to bring up to three tonnes of cocaine into Europe, some of which was highly likely to have ended up on UK streets. “They thought the café in Rotterdam was a safe place to conduct their operations but by working in partnership with the Dutch National Police, the NCA was able to identify them and put a stop to their plan.” Coordinated strikes in the Netherlands and UK resulted in multiple arrests in October 2013 but Dennis, who was in Spain at the time, evaded arrest for nearly two years. Anthony Hill of the Crown Prosecution Service’s Organised Crime Division, said: “These men worked with criminals overseas to plan a large and complex drug-smuggling operation, plotting to bring up to three tonnes of cocaine from South America. If successful, this would have flooded the streets of Europe with drugs worth hundreds of millions of euros. “Their criminal activity was coordinated overseas, but so was the response from the criminal justice system. We worked closely with Dutch authorities and the National Crime Agency and the strength of our evidence left the defendants with no choice but to plead guilty.” The National Crime Agency in the UK, issued another arrest notification following the arrest of yet another British fugitive wanted under the joint Spanish-UK ‘Operation Captura’

initiative. The arrest means that 73 out of 86 so far named on the Captura list have been detained. Michael Roden was one of those featured on a mobile billboard displaying the faces of 18 wanted Britons that toured a number of towns and cities in southern Spain this summer. Michael Roden, aged 26, from Redditch, was captured on 4 November at an address in the town of Alomartes, Andalucia, but details could not be released until today to protect an ongoing Guardia Civil investigation being carried out in collaboration with the National Crime Agency (NCA). Roden was one of seven people apprehended for allegedly belonging to a criminal organisation involved in drug trafficking, illegal possession of firearms, money laundering and forgery. He is currently detained along with three men and three women who are Chilean, Romanian, Georgian and Spanish nationals. Six house searches resulted in the seizure of approximately 30 kilos of cannabis, drug packaging material, several firearms, high-value vehicles, 85,000 Euros and £600. A European Arrest Warrant for Roden, who featured on the Operation Captura fugitive list, was also executed as he is wanted by West Midlands Police in connection with the importation of 70 kilos of cannabis in 2013. An extradition hearing is expected to take place in Madrid this week. Dave Allen, Head of the International Crime Bureau at the NCA, said: “The arrest of Michael Roden marks yet another success for Operation Captura and highlights the effectiveness of the campaign in flushing out fugitives. “We’ve caught 73 out of 86 fugitives on the Captura list and will continue to work closely with our law enforcement partners to find the remaining 13.” Lord Ashcroft, KCMG PC, Founder and Chair of Crimestoppers, said: “The success of Operation Captura has been quite incredible and I commend all those at Crimestoppers, the NCA and the Spanish authorities for their tireless work in locating these wanted individuals. “We are now down to the unlucky 13 who still remain at large, and I would ask anyone with information on their whereabouts to contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 900 555 111 in Spain or 0800 555 111 in the UK, so we can bring them to justice.” Operation Captura is a multi-agency initiative between Crimestoppers, the NCA and the Spanish authorities to track down suspected or convicted criminals on the run in Spain. More information and pictures of the remaining 13 fugitives can be found in the Most Wanted gallery on the NCA website at: http://www.nationalcrimeagency.gov.u k/campaigns/most-wantedhub/operation-captura-spain

Winter storms set to hit Guardamar's Babylon Beach properties - again By Andrew Atkinson Winter storms and conditions are set to hit Babylon Beach in Guardamar, where a petition has been launched, in the wake of a section of the beach being closed off to the public in the summer. The alleged illegally built beach properties, which stand within metres of the sea on the playa, have been ravaged over decades following their construction. Some of the idyllic properties have collapsed, with others being propped up with scaffolding in the last few years. Having walked the beach regularly I have seen the devastation caused by the sea. Properties have been repaired, year-onyear, with the hope of buying more time against the ravages of the sea. In 2014 the Costal Department in Guardamar demolished two houses located on Babylon beach which were in poor condition. An agreement made between the owners of the properties, the coastal department and the Ministry in Alicante, led to their demolition. Houses had been left in ruins for years risking collapse, flagging up dangers to the public. Following a member of the public sustaining a foot injury from 'debris' -

buried in the sand, this year the authorities took drastic action in closing down part of the popular beach walk. Now a petition has been set up by owners of the properties, citing the properties as part of Guardamar history. 'Please sign the petition to support the regeneration and maintenance of Guardamar beaches', reads a sign, in three languages, on one of the 'character' looking houses. Deemed as part of Guardamar history some properties have been demolished, due to the structural and dangerous state, with others having had repairs undertaken in a bid to save demolition. Sandbags and stones have been placed in situ at the front of many of properties in a never ending desperate battle against the sea elements' A sign has been erected on the playa by the M.I. Ayumtamiento Guardamar del Segura, stating 'Prohibido el Paso'. Owners of the properties continued to use the scenic views during the summer months, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, with fishermen also fishing daily on the section of area closed off. Despite the 'No Entry' sign some beach dwellers ignore the message, while others do adhere to the authorities' warning.

Bands performed a parade from the Plaza de Belluga to the Romea Theater ahead of the National Contest of Bands, celebrating its 25th anniversary. The Romea Theatre hosted performances by music bands inscribed Second Section, which composed of between 51 and 70 musicians, and the First Section, of 71 to 90 musicians. The contest Ciudad de Murcia is a project with great national importance, with participation requests received from regions such as Galicia, Andalusia, Aragon, Valencia, Madrid and Castilla La Mancha. Due to the number of bands that made their registration for the Second Section a lottery

took place to select the three participating bands. The event is deemed as one of the most important of the Spanish state, due to the rigour and seriousness of the work developed in the own technical organization of the Federation of Bands of Murcia. The jury, on a proposal from the Federation of Bands of Murcia, was composed of personalities from the world of music, such as Fernando Bonnet, chief conductor of the Municipal Band of Valencia. Antonio Ginés Abellán, former director of the Conservatory of Murcia and founder of the first Saxophone Quartet of Spain, and Juan José Navarro, director of the Polyphonic Choir of the University of Almeria. Each juror gave a score, from 0 to 10 points, on: pitch, loudness, interpretation and technique to each of the acting bands therefore the compulsory work, such as that of free choice. Bands are given a sum of money to help them participate in the contest (1,100 euros to the First Section and 1,000 euros to the Second Section). Up to 100 migrants try to jump fence from Morocco into Spain Close to 100 migrants tried to storm the border fence from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Melilla Saturday in a scramble that left one man seriously injured, authorities said. Moroccan security forces managed to stop some of the migrants from reaching the fence that seals off Melilla – one of only two land borders between Africa and the European Union – but around 30 people still reached it and clambered onto the railings, they said. Two of these managed to get across into the Spanish territory, while one man was seriously injured when he fell from the metres-high fence near the Barrio Chino crossing, authorities in Melilla added in a statement. The man was taken to hospital in Melilla with severe head injuries – along with three others who were slightly hurt as they too fell from the fence. Other migrants were still clinging onto the railings in high winds, prompting firemen to lay

out mattresses and other material at the base of the fence in an attempt to break any fall. Authorities said the area around Barrio Chino is favoured by migrants and refugees trying to make it into Spain, as the “cluster of homes there allows them to crouch and hide, making it harder for security forces to intercept them.” Melilla and Ceuta, another Spanish enclave nearly 400 kilometres (250 miles) away, have for some years been a flashpoint for African migrants trying to enter Spain, with authorities stepping up security by strengthening border barriers. So far this year, according to Melilla authorities, there have been a dozen attempts to cross the border fence there, with more than 100 managing to enter the Spanish enclave. But authorities said this pales in comparison with 2014, when more than 2,000 migrants and refugees managed to enter Melilla.

Barcelona’s mysterious smell returns The mysterious stench that invaded Barcelona on Wednesday was back offending nostrils in the Catalan capital on Thursday. After just a few hours of respite, several residents of Barcelona’s metropolitan area reported that the offensive odor had made a return yesterday. The neighborhoods of Sarrià, Marina del Port, Vila Olímpica, Sants and l’Eixample were affected, and reports also came in from the nearby municipalities of Hospitalet de Llobregat and Esplugues. Authorities had initially attributed the bad smell to farm fertilizer being used in an agricultural area south of Barcelona. A southerly wind that was blowing on Wednesday was partly blamed for spreading the fumes. But technicians sent out to the fertilized fields have ruled them out as the source of this latest episode and city officials remain puzzled. Local citizen safety authorities have sought to

reassure concerned citizens that air quality is normal and the bad smell is not harmful to health. Sources at City Hall told news agency EFE that the odor did not originate from the sewage system, waste plants or the port area, and did not seem to be coming from anywhere in the city at all. Meanwhile, the social media were alight with comments once again, with one person describing the smell as “kind of like fertilizer or like really stinky feet.”

Shhh! Campaigners try to silence noisy Spanish restaurant diners Spaniards are famously not the quietest of people. Walk past any bar and the chances are you’ll hear a reassuring din of loud chatting against a background of blaring television noise. But now one charity is encouraging restaurants to lower their noise levels in order to create a more pleasant atmosphere for diners, and also help improve conditions for the hard of hearing. "Without a doubt we have a problem with noise here in Spain," Svante Borjesson, director of the foundation Oír es Clave, a charity dedicated to improving the lives of people with hearing impairments, told The Local. "Spain is the second noisiest country in the world after Japan," Borjesson added. And the noise is not just a problem in bars and

restaurants, "It's noisy in the streets, in schools, offices hospitals, everywhere," Borjesson said. "We are working to improve the quality of life for people with auditory problems and our "dine quietly" initiative benefits not only our particular interest group but the whole of society." Oír es Clave has launched a campaign - Comer sin ruido or Dine Quietly in English - that is calling on Spanish restaurants to implement a series of simple changes to improve their sound quality. "It is difficult to make people aware of the dangers of noise pollution, but people are becoming more and more conscious of it," Borjesson said. Restaurants can find tips on the campaign's website comersinruido.org. "It’s not just a project for expensive restaurants, but for any restaurant that is worried about noise levels," Borjesson said. The Dine Quietly website offers practical advice for restaurants and also includes a list of 20 restaurants where patrons will be guaranteed a headache-free meal in a nice, quiet atmosphere. "We would like famous food guides like the Michelin Guide to also take this criteria into consideration, and that one day acoustic comfort will be just as important in the evaluation of a restaurant and will appear in reviews," Borjesson said.

Paris Attacks 'Mastermind' Tried to recruit Spanish Women Madrid, Spain: The suspected mastermind of the Paris attacks, Abdelhamid Abaaoud, tried to recruit women living in Spain for the Islamic State group, said Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz. "This person, Abdelhamid Abaaoud, tried to recruit Spaniards, especially women, though social networks to join and fight with Daesh," he said, using an Arabic acronym for the Islamic State group. "This was not to carry out attacks in Spain. Regarding this we have no knowledge," he added. The minister said Islamic State has focused on

recruiting women to "repopulate the caliphate" which it proclaimed in 2014 in the huge swathes of Syria and Iraq under its control. Spanish police have arrested several women this year on suspicion of recruiting women and teenage girls for Islamic State terrorists. Last month police arrested a 22-year-old Spanish woman at Madrid airport suspected of trying to join Islamist extremists in Syria. Abaaoud was among those killed in a police raid in a suburb of the French capital, the Paris prosecutor said in a statement.

40 years after Franco's death, Spanish families look for stolen babies Leonor remembers the long corridor of the Spanish maternity ward where she saw her newborn daughter disappear in 1964, taken away by a nurse, like it was just minutes ago. The next day she was falsely told by hospital staff that her daughter had died. Her baby was just one of tens of thousands of newborns who were snatched from mothers and fathers deemed politically dangerous to General Francisco Franco’s dictatorship by a network of doctors, nurses, priests and nuns, and given to other families. Now four decades after Franco’s death on Nov. 20, 1975, the scandal over the “stolen babies” of the regime looks set to go unpunished. “It was just a few seconds and she was dead,” said Leonor Sánchez Arroyo, a frail 73-year-old with a wrinkled face. While she had doubts that her newborn had really passed away, she said she did not dare argue with the nuns who ran the maternity because in those days “the word of a nun had as much value as that of kings.” Just 21 when she gave birth and with little schooling, she also did not ask to be given the remains of her newborn so she could organize the burial herself. Nearly a half century later, her second daughter, Soledad Arroyo, now a journalist, saw a report on television about the theft of babies from that same clinic in Madrid. The register of the O’Donnell clinic listed dozens of other deaths of newborns in just one month from unlikely causes, such as an ear infection. It was November 2010 and the scandal over the stolen babies was only just breaking out in the open after decades of silence and whispered rumors. In vain, Soledad and her mother tried to search for the lost sister and daughter, attempting DNA matches with several people. Now, they help other people in the hope

that they may be successful. Up to 300,000 cases The practice began after Franco came to power in 1939 following Spain’s civil war pitting Republicans against Nationalists loyal to the general, said Soledad who has written a book on the topic. “The prisons were full of Republican women, and their babies were systematically stolen in order to ‘clean the race’,” she said. “Those babies were given to families who were in favor of the regime and who could not have children.” The practice gradually extended to include the theft of newborns from poor families by doctors and nurses — many of them nuns — to adopted parents in Spain and abroad. New mothers were often told their babies had died within hours of birth and the hospital had taken care of their burials. Since the scandal emerged, some of the babies’ supposed graves have been exhumed, only to reveal bones that belong to adults or animals — or nothing at all. Soledad said she has not found any evidence that the

Barcelona’s Left-wing mayor plans to introduce official brothels Barcelona’s city council is planning to create officially regulated premises for the use of prostitutes, in an attempt to remove them from the streets of its picturesque old quarters. Led by Left-wing mayor Ada Colau, the proposals include removing hefty fines for both sex workers and their clients that were introduced in 2012. At the moment, a prostitute can be fined up to €350 (£245) for soliciting in the street, while for clients the penalty can be as high as €3,000 (£2,100) if the sexual transaction takes place in a public place. This week the council’s social rights committee decided to create “a legal framework for women who wish to practise prostitution voluntarily and in safe and hygienic conditions”. Mrs Colau’s Barcelona en Comú coalition voted in favour of the initiative, along with Left-wing Catalan nationalists from the ERC and CUP parties. Laura Pérez, in charge of the council’s social department, described the move as “historic”, in that prostitutes would no longer be criminalised. “The regulation we have is not working: only 10 per cent of the fines have been collected and the number of women who work in the street is just as

high. Nor does fining clients work; the problem are the mafias.” Any legal premises set up would need to be approved and inspected periodically by the council and could only be used by prostitutes who work independently without a pimp. A working group has been set up including the police, members of the judiciary and NGOs to help women who are victims of trafficking. A spokeswoman for the Barcelona group Indignant Prostitutes, which has been campaigning for greater freedom and rights for the city’s sex workers, said it was “a step in the right direction”. Prostitution is not illegal in Spain but it occupies a legal grey area which tends to work against the women who practise it. Local authorities pursue prostitutes who solicit in the street while thousands of women, many of whom are the victims of people trafficking, offer sex in roadside clubs and bars.

baby thefts were organized by the regime, but added it was “tolerated” by the government. Estimates vary as to the number of children who were taken from their parents, but she estimates there could be up to 300,000 cases of baby snatching. ‘We want to know what happened’ As of 2011, only 1,072 criminal complaints regarding stolen babies have been examined and 30 percent were shelved, according to the Justice Ministry. Spain has yet to come to terms with its civil war and Franco’s subsequent dictatorship — seen as a particularly dark chapter of its recent history. Former crusading investigative Judge Baltasar Garzón in 2008 opened the country’s first criminal investigation into the disappearance of tens of thousands of people during the Franco era. But he promptly had to drop it because it was seen to violate an amnesty passed in 1977 by political parties keen to put everything behind them and ensure a smooth transition to democracy after Franco’s death. Associations want the government to set up a DNA bank that would allow potential matches between those who were stolen babies and their biological families — a proposal backed by the main opposition Socialists. Meanwhile, Ángel Casado, of the Adelante Bebés Robados association (“Onwards Stolen Babies”), would like the government to pass a law that recognizes them as victims of the regime. Spain’s conservative Popular Party, in power since 2011, has never condemned the removal of newborns from their mothers by the regime and Church documents about the affair remain inaccessible. “We are not seeking financial compensation. We want to know what happened to these children, that they know their true identity,” said Soledad Luque, the head of another association of stolen babies.

Spanish athlete stripped of 2009 world title Spanish middle-distance runner Marta Dominguez has been stripped of her 2009 world steeplechase title and given a three-year doping ban. Dominguez, 40, was accused of doping in 2013 when abnormalities were found in her blood passport dating back to 2009. But the Spanish athletics federation, of which Dominguez had been a vicepresident, cleared her in 2014. However, that decision has now been reversed on appeal by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas). The appeal came from the IAAF, the sport’s governing body, and the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada). Dominguez claimed her anomalous readings were caused by a medical condition. But Cas said that explanation was not “sufficient” to dissuade it from “scientific evidence” of an anti-doping violation presented by IAAF and Wada experts. Dominguez’s results between 5 August 2009 and 8 July 2013 have been disqualified, which means she loses her Berlin 2009 gold and 2010 European 3,000m steeplechase silver medal. The athlete who came second to Dominguez in Berlin was Russia’s Yuliya

Zaripova, who is serving a two-and-a-half year ban for doping that is subject to another appeal. But the cancellation of her 2010 European silver should mean an upgrade for Britain’s Hatti Archer, who finished fourth in that race. In fact, the two other runners ahead of her – Zaripova and Lyubov Kharlamova – have both been given bans but were eligible to race at the time. Dominguez retains her 5,000m silver medals from the 2001 and 2003 World Championships, as well as two European golds from 2002 and 2006. She was acquitted in 2011 of distributing performance-enhancing drugs after being charged as part of Operation Galgo – an investigation into doping in Spanish athletics.

Back Stage with El Marino Artists Direct Spain is a website dedicated to promoting local artists all over the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida. The only place you can find acts and book them direct. For venues we also run a Facebook group called Book Acts Direct Spain where you can post your requirements as well as searching via the website. This week Artists Direct had a chat with the multi lingual and talented singer songwriter from Romania El Marino. He began his career singing as a baritone in an operatic choir for the Romanian Navy Artistic Assembly and then began learning harmonica and guitar and writing his own compositions in 1991. El Marino then moved to America and began performing in the streets in New York and in bars in Greenwich Village such as BMW and Club 33. He then joined a Latin Band Extacis performing English and Spanish cover songs. Amazingly he says that if he were not an entertainer he would be a cook – no doubt to demonstrate his abundant creative skills. El Marino has appeared on Romanian TV several times, first on Rain Of The Stars and then later with his own show performing his own songs and choreography. A master of many genres of music – he says that of the many influences, The Eagles, Beatles REM and The Outfields have probably been where the greatest influences arose. In fact one of his best moments was playing and singing Hotel California by The Eagles to a packed theatre. With so much experience under his belt it is hard to believe that El Marino could suffer stage fright but he says he does briefly at the start of his shows. He arrived in Spain in 2002 and made quite an impact

on the music scene in Madrid performing his owns songs in venues like Las Salas Del Burgo, La Pasarela, Albatross and Tex Mex and joining Tony Hernando on tour. Singing in the winter at an outdoor concert – with a sore throat El Marino recalls as being the worst moment in his glittering career. And he has a couple of tips too for any budding artists – just sing the songs you like, do your own music as you won’t get much doing someone else’s music. These days El Marino is firmly established on the Costa Blanca and provides local venues with his musical talent either as a solo act, duo, trio or full band. He just loves music and it is music that has allowed him to meet people all over the world and enjoy the energy that comes from playing together with other talented musicians. His passion for music almost seeps out of his pores – he says “I have achieved all my dreams and right now I’m working at the last one: THE MUSIC, and I’ll try it till I die.” You can view El Marino’s profile and contact him direct for bookings on the ArtistsDirect-Spain website. If you are an act and would like to join the ArtistsDirect-Spain – email info@artistsdirect-spain.com or call 634 300 907

After Hours at Reflections bar & Restaurant

Tell us about yourselves My name is Chris and I am one of a group of four people who own and run ‘Reflections’ Bar & Restaurant in San Luis. The others are my good friends Craig and Claire and my partner Lara. I am from Norway and the other three are from England. I came to Spain 5 years ago on work experience intending to be here for just a few months. Then I met Lara and I stayed! What made you open a bar/restaurant? We all worked together in a busy successful bar in the Torrevieja area. It was hard work but good fun and we became firm friends. Eventually we decided that we wanted the hard work and good fun… but as our own bosses.

Where did the inspiration for the name come from? It was already called ‘Reflections’ and we decided to leave it as it was, especially as it was already well-known by that name. Who does the cooking? And how would you describe your style? Craig is the head chef, ably assisted by Claire plus my brother Kim. I would describe the style as truly international as between them they have experience of preparing dishes from many parts of the world.

What’s your favourite dish on the menu? My personal favourite is steak, along with the variety of sauces and ways of preparing it that the three of them come up with. They are all agreed on their favourite dish, the lamb shank, made with Craig’s own recipe. I am quite partial to it myself, even though as a favourite dish the steak just edges it. Favourite day of the week? I like Mondays. It’s supposed to be a quiet day but we always seem to be busy. We do a 5€ meal deal from 12 until 5 every day except Sundays. There is a wide variety of choice on the menu, reflecting the International flavour of our cuisine. However our absolute favourite day of the week here, and we are all in total agreement, is Sunday because that is the day we hold the famous ‘Big Jam’ from

4pm to 7pm. This features some of the best musicians and singers in the area all coming together simply for the love of music. Each week we are full and there is always a great atmosphere. Any interesting tales? Well my mother lives nearby and is officially retired but spends a lot of time here attempting to run the place. We don’t mind because we all love her but people often say how we all came here to be our own bosses and when she’s around we’re not! Also one of our waiters, James, is No.2 in Europe at high-jump, under-19 level and he can move incredibly fast. We always joke that if you are intending to ‘do a runner’ without paying your bill make sure he’s not on duty ‘cos you won’t get very far! Find out what Reflections Bar & Restaurant have going on each day of the week on the whatson-costablanca.com website or telephone 966 845 456 to book a table.

Seven steps to get you through winter Although humans don’t hibernate in the same way as hedgehogs or bears, for example, who shut down their digestive systems and slow their heart rates for months at a time, our bodies do have different needs in winter. Cold weather, less light and increased vulnerability to viruses and bacteria means a few subtle dietary and lifestyle changes are in order.

shift it. “Medication can help relieve the symptoms of a cold but it can’t fight the virus itself,” says Norris. “Your body needs to beat the virus, and to do that, it needs to be supplied with the right nutrients.” Spring into action: Zinc has been shown to shorten the life of colds but many people don’t get enough of it in their normal daily diets. Good sources include pumpkin seeds, turkey, beef, lamb and lentils.

Winter worry: overeating During the cold season, you find yourself feasting on large quantities of food (otherwise known as bingeing) and that leads to weight gain. Don’t worry too much, it’s natural. “Changes in the chemicals in your brain during winter increase your body’s desire for carbohydrates and bigger quantities of food too,” says registered nutritionist Carina Norris. “While a clever strategy in times where feast and famine were common, it can result in a growing waistline for today’s human as our food supply is constant.” Spring into action: “Give into your body’s desire for carbs but proceed with caution, and watch your portion sizes,” says Norris. “A baked potato is a better option than pasta, for example, because although they’re both carbheavy, potatoes with their skins on are a good source of vitamins as well as an excellent source of fibre, which fills you up.”

Winter worry: craving stews and hot puddings Surely you need more calories when it’s cold? “Not necessarily,” says Norris. “You don’t burn significantly more calories being cold unless your body temperature drops to such an extent that you begin to shiver.” Being chilly does make you desire steaming hot plates of food for two reasons, however: “Eating not only fuels energy, it also causes your body to produce heat during the digestive process,” says Norris. “It takes a while, about 30-60 minutes after eating, but at this stage your body generates approximately 10% more heat than before – the simple act of eating hot food works on your body like an internal hot water bottle.” Spring into action: Don’t ignore your body’s desire for hot food, but provide it with slow-release carbs so the warming effect lasts for longer. “Porridge is an excellent option in the morning” says Norris. “Not only is it hot and filling, the oats will stoke up a fiery furnace inside you as your digestive system slowly processes them. It’ll keep you going far longer.”

Winter worry: dehydration “Dehydration is a common cause of winter

Winter worry: getting enough vitamins

headaches,” says Norris. “Cold blunts your body’s thirst mechanism and so even though your body releases moisture through your breath as well as sweat, you don’t realise you need to drink more fluid.” Keeping your air passages moistened also helps prevent viruses and bacteria taking hold, so drinking plenty is as important in winter as it is in summer. Spring into action: Drink herbal and fruit teas instead of tea or coffee, which are not as hydrating as noncaffeinated drinks.

Winter worry: snacking Coming in from the bitter cold, you put the kettle on to make a hand-warming mug of hot chocolate. The biscuits find their way on to the table, and suddenly, just 15 minutes later, you’re 500 calories fuller. “Snacking on sweet foods when you’re low on energy is tempting but it creates a no-win situation,” says Norris. “You’ll feel good for a short time, but then your energy levels will plummet, leaving you reaching for yet more biscuits.” Spring into action: Prepare large quantities of vegetable soups, and keep them ready in the fridge or freezer for whenever you feel a snack attack coming on. “Soup is an ideal winter dish as it’s hot, full of liquid to ensure you remain hydrated and it retains the nutrients from the vegetables in the water,” says Norris. Add whole chicken pieces (including the bone) when you make the soup and you’re on to a real winner. Studies have found that a substance in chicken bones is extremely beneficial for boosting the immune system and it tastes great too. Browse our selection of soups and stews for ideas.

Winter worry: shaking off a cold You can’t seem to shake off a cold, so you stuff yourself full of powders, sprays and pills in an attempt to

Spending more time in enclosed spaces makes us more vulnerable to viruses such as colds and flu. But there’s no need to pay out for vitamin supplements. “Many people don’t realise that nature provides naturally high-vitamin foods for us during winter in the form of vegetables,” says Norris. “For example, potatoes are an excellent source of the C-vit, as well as fibre; and pumpkin or sweet potatoes are packed full of vitamin C and beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A, and bioflavonoids that help keep your body fighting fit; and cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, Brussels sprouts and broccoli contain glucosinolates, which help reduce your cancer risk.” Spring into action: Bake or roast a variety of winter vegetables and serve with meat or fish for a delicious, cold-combating dinner. To up the anti-cold count further, bake whole cloves of garlic too – just 25 minutes will turn each clove into an unctuous, lip-smacking nibble. And as an added bonus, it doesn’t taste as strong (or leave your breath as smelly) but has proven anti-viral properties.

Winter worry: the urge to hibernate When the nights draw in, you spend more time inside; and the more time you spend inside, the longer you want to stay there. “This is a natural response to fewer daylight hours in winter,” says Norris. “Our pineal gland responds to lack of light by producing melatonin, the sleep hormone, making us feel dozy and ready for rest.” Spring into action: If your body simply requires an extra 30 minutes in bed each day, don’t fight it: “Your immune system needs sunlight to function optimally,” says Norris. “But an extra half hour of sleep a night can counter this effect.” And to combat your overwhelming urge to hibernate like a hedgehog all day, head outside in the morning when the sun is at its brightest (even under cloud cover). “Your pineal gland will respond to light by halting its production of melatonin, and you’ll feel as though you’ve been given an energy boost for the rest of the day,” says Norris.

Herbal Hair Loss Remedies That Offer Hope Herbs hold an obvious appeal for many people because they support the body's natural healing mechanisms to target the cause of the problem, as opposed to merely tackling the symptoms. It would be wrong to present herbal hair loss remedies as a miracle solution for all sufferers — there is however growing evidence to support the view that some herbal remedies offer real hope to many people. Let's examine the case for some of the more popular remedies to determine if they're worth trying. Ginkgo biloba: This popular herb is thought to improve blood circulation to the brain and skin. Herbalists believe that the increased flow of blood to the brain area delivers more nutrients to the hair follicles thus promoting hair regrowth. The recommended dose is 120-160mg of dry extract each day spread over three

doses. Green tea (Camellia sinesis): It is thought that catechins found in green tea may inhibit the enzyme 5alpha-reductase that converts testosterone into hairunfriendly DHT. It is therefore believed to be effective in preventing and treating male pattern type baldness. You should drink several cups of green tea each day or take it in capsule form as instructed by the manufacturer. He Shou Wu (Polygonum multiflorum): Also known as Fo-Ti, this Chinese herb has traditionally been used to reduce hair loss. It is found in many commercial preparations, or in tea and capsule form. Pygeum (Pygeum africanum): Derived from the bark of an evergreen, it works in a similar way to green tea. It is widely used to treat prostate problems and male pattern baldness. Users should take 60-500mg per day

in pill or capsule form. Saw palmetto (Seranoa repens): This is the current treatment of choice for many men due to its ability to protect the prostate, slow hair loss and encourage hair regrowth. It forms the core element of many commercially prepared hair loss treatments but can easily be obtained in its pure form. The recommended dose is a 160mg capsule twice each day, but make sure the ingredients are made from the berry extract not the dried berries themselves. Stinging nettle (Urtica diocia): This has long been favoured as a means of preventing hair loss due to its ability to block the conversion of testosterone into DHT. It can be taken in pill or capsule form with an optimum dose of 50-100mg per day. It is particularly effective when combined with pygeum and saw palmetto.

Staying Healthy in Winter Although we are basking n glorious sunshine and pleasant temperatures this is the time of year when we are more susceptible to colds and flu. I am going to talk this week about a few simple steps you can take to stay as healthy as possible. We all know the adage “you are what you eat” and this is never truer than in the colder weather. Our immune system is what keeps our bodies healthy whether it be colds and flu, cancer, infectious diseases and the like. In order to boost our immune system we need lots of vitamin C found in citrus fruits and green

leafy vegetables. If you know that you don’t have enough in your diet it is quite acceptable to take a supplement although the more you can get from your diet the better. Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin and not able to be stored in the body, we need a daily supply so eating 7 oranges once a week is not the answer it must be take daily. If you are interested in homeopathic remedies then Echinacea is a good thing to take during the winter months from November through to February. Available online or locally from Zenia Natural at La Zenia. Exercise and fresh air help

to boost the immune system so a daily brisk walk will help, Take some health giving deep breaths whilst out walking and really clear the lower air pockets in the lungs where bacteria can collect. We all know how cold our houses get during Spanish winters but it is important to open windows and change the air which also helps to keep moulds at bay. If your house gets mould in winter be aware that the spores from mould are very toxic and must be kept under control as we breathe in the spores which can cause lung and other problems. If you have patches of mould ordinary household bleach will help to control them. A few simple ideas and finally if you are flying it’s a good idea to use a saline nasal spray before the journey to discourage bacteria and viruses from entering the body via the nasal cavity. For any further advice on Staying Healthy in Winter you can email me on simply18es@hotmail.com

Phuc Dat Bich Goes To Extreme Lengths To Prove His Name Is Real Australian man named Phuc Dat Bich has taken extreme measures to prove to the world that his name is real. The 23-year-old was tired of people not believing him when he introduced himself, and recently had to prove his identity when he was blocked from using Facebook under their rules against using fake names. "I find it highly irritating the fact that

Woman knits retro tank tops for rescue chickens A woman who re-homes battery chickens has also started knitting them jazzy tank tops to keep them warm. We’re talking chickens in cosy knits. 25-year-old Nicola Congden handknits the tank tops in her kitchen in Falmouth, Cornwall. Chickens from battery farms are in particular need of extra layers because they often have few feathers, as they tend to pull them out in frustration when kept

nobody seems to believe me when I say that my full legal name is how you see it," Phuc Dat wrote in a Facebook post. "I’ve been accused of using a false and misleading name of which I find very

offensive. Is it because I’m Asian? Is it?" If read in English the name sounds particularly rude, although in Vietnamese the name is pronounced phoop dook bic.

This 'heart attack in a box' all-day breakfast will test anyone's appetite

This is the gut-busting mega breakfast which has proved so popular - a customer in Australia asked for one to be delivered. More than 200,000 people viewed a social media post for the munchie box within hours of it being launched and the cafe which created it had to close early to stock up on produce. The feast includes potato scones, bacon, link sausage, sliced sausage, black pudding, haggis, bagels, French toast, mushrooms, scrambled egg, beans and tea, coffee or a soft drink. It is the brainchild of Cafe Number 10 in Ayr which has struggled to keep up with demand since putting it on the menu. Cafe owner Jacqui MacNaughton, 53, said: “We decided to do the pr to drum up business but it's gone nuts. "There has been so much demand. We even got a call claiming to be from Australia to see if we could deliver one.” The munchie box can be bought for £8.99 for two people or £16.99 which is enough to feed four. Although it has proved popular, it is by no means the biggest.

A greasy spoon cafe is claiming to serve Britain's biggest breakfast – clocking up a gut-busting EIGHT THOUSAND calories and weighs 7lb. Super-hungry customers prepared to fork out £19.95 for "The Hibernator" fry-up are served: • Eight rashers of bacon • Eight sausages • Four hash browns • Four fried eggs • A four-egg cheese omelette • Four waffles • Four pieces of toast • Four pieces of fried bread, • Four pieces of black pudding • Two ladles of beans • Two ladles of tomatoes, • Mushrooms • A portion of large chips • A two-pint milkshake to wash it all down. The Man Vs Food-inspired challenge had only been attempted by 20 brave souls when we reported on it last year after it was first put on the menu at the Bear Grills Café in Congleton, Cheshire. Challengers who eat the whole breakfast win £100, get their name on the Wall of Fame.

in tiny pens. This leaves them struggling to cope with chilly winter weather. So, for a few hours a day, and when they’re under the watchful eye of Nicola or her mum Ann, the chickens get to wear their jumpers. ‘I saw an article a few years ago about doing them for ex-battery hens and I decided at the time that I would like to do that,’ Nicola said of the knits. ‘I got the pattern and I got my mum to make them,’ she explains. ‘It just grew from there.’ Between them, they estimate they’ve made around 150 chicken sweaters. They give the chickens an extra splash of colour, Nicola thinks, adding: ‘I like to colour match the chickens and the jumpers.’

How did bottle of BEER land this man his dream job? This man landed his dream by sending his prospective employers a bottle of beer as proof of his credentials. Passionate home brewer Liam Tutty, who works in digital media, never imagined he would be able to combine his job with his hobby. However, when he saw the Rye River Brewing Company were poised for a massive expansion he decided there must a place for his skills. To show his enthusiasm and ability the 32-year-old, from Ireland, recreated a bottle of one of the firm's most iconic brands - McGargles - but bearing a cartoon of his own face and the words Liam wants a job... and a reason to go to a brewery every day. It also has a web address which linked to a beer-themed page showcasing his experience. He then filled the bottle with home brew and sent it off to the man he hoped would be his new boss Niall Phelan. Liam said: "My job wasn't advertised but when I read about the expansion I felt sure they would have a place for me. "I also thought if they didn't the beer might stay in their mind and if a post come up at some point in the future they might think 'who was that lunatic who sent us beer'. "I was proud of the product but nervous as i thought the person would either laugh or I would be written off as the madman of the brewing community. "But like my wife said if he doesn't laugh he's probably not the kind of

person you want to work for - but he did. "I think the package was attention grabbing too as Niall said his first thought was 'why has someone sent me a pipe bomb." He will start his new job in the offices in Kilcock on December 14 but says while his brewing knowledge will help him understand the product he will probably be pestering brewers for their expert tips. He said as a huge bonus the job will take him back the area where all his family now live. Liam added: "I am going to be like a child in a sweet shop... at 32. I cannot believe I will be getting to be around beer every day." He said as an extra thrill his new employers have not yet cracked open his CV as they want to share it with the brewers. He said: "I'm a bit nervous its a bit like you've cooked someone dinner and they say 'okay I'm going to give this to Jamie Oliver'. "But how many home brewers get to have their stuff sampled by the professionals - I've had enough of it to know it won't poison them."

2016 Seat Ibiza Cupra

What is it?: As facelifts go, this is about as comprehensive as they come. Gone is the 1.4 turbocharged engine and dual-clutch automatic gearbox, and into this new Ibiza Cupra comes a 1.8-litre blown petrol complete with six-speed manual gearbox (familiar from the Polo GTI). There’s no automatic transmission on offer even if you wanted one. The hot Ibiza now brakes a spinning inside wheel when appropriate, too, and comes as standard with adjustable dampers. There’s a long list of newfangled connectivity tech now available, too. The 5.0in touchscreen with Bluetooth, USB and DAB is standard, but most will opt to add the optional 6.5in screen complete with sat-nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. What's it like?: It’s a big improvement on the old car, that’s for sure. The 1.8 motor has a broad, fairly continuous plateau of torque that’s easy to surf around on for snappy pace and predictable response. The Cupra doesn’t feel dramatically fast - the fairly muted exhaust note is a little short of drama, too - but this engine has got usefully more brute force to it than its predecessor and balances a happy medium between really vigorous pace and a low enough power output that you can wring it out thoroughly even on awkward roads. That manual six-speed gearbox comes with a shift light and all the extra involvement you’d expect of a three-pedal hot hatch. The tweaked suspension and new two-phase dampers do good things. High-frequency bumps and

creases are managed without fluster in normal mode, and most drivers wanting something with this level of grit will forgive the fairly firm damper compression over high-speed undulations. It’s safe to say that it’ll be one of the more comfortable cars in this class for the daily grind. The steering also has two weights, although neither provides much feedback; it’s perfectly precise and easy to use, and the weight is judged well enough in both modes to give you confidence even in hard use, but it never feels particularly connected or feelsome in the way that the steering in a Fiesta ST does. The brakes have been uprated on the new Cupra, too. They’re really effective, with a fair amount of feel through the pedal and great stopping power. Red callipers are a nice touch, too. Unfortunately the interior is drab-looking, with little variety to the texture and material finish other than the

gloss surround to the vents. Still, while it feels more durable than classy, it is a dash that’s easy to use and the seats are supportive and comfortable even over long distances. The optional, full infotainment system we tried has just about every feature you could want, although you don’t need to have particularly fat fingers to find it hard to hit some of the small icons on the touchscreen. There isn’t all that much space in the back – tall adults will feel hemmed in – but kids or shorter adults will be fine. That’s likely to be all that’s expected of the Ibiza Cupra, though, which is only available in three-door SC guise. The boot, similarly, is far from best in class but is likely to be more than fit for purpose for most Ibiza buyers. Should I buy one?: The Ibiza Cupra SC is a really accomplished car. It’s fun in a safe yet invigorating way, it looks pretty cool and it’s fast enough to thrill while being small and benign enough to suit UK roads well. Prices haven’t been confirmed yet, but it’ll certainly be over £18k, and at this point we have to stop avoiding the crucial question: is it as fun as a Ford Fiesta ST? No. In the Seat’s defence, very few things are, and the Seat is more comfortable and more refined, so we can see why you would chose one over the Ford. However, the Cupra's mechanical twin - the VW Polo GTI - has a more appealing interior for not much more cash, so think that one through carefully if you've decided that everyday comfort is a key factor. In the end, though, this is a hot hatch. Fun is their currency, and the Ford Fiesta ST still owns the bank.

Alfa Romeo SUV set for 2016 debut

Alfa Romeo’s new Giulia saloon, due to eventually arrive in the UK in about twelve months’ time, will be swiftly followed by an SUV sister car, according to an Alfa insider. The Giulia SUV is likely to debut in the Spring of next year and follow the saloon onto the market in early 2017. Like the Giulia, the SUV will sit on Alfa’s new platform that will eventually be stretched into a new 5 Series-rivalling saloon and a larger SUV that will target the BMW X5. Like the saloon, we’d expect the SUV to feature a 2.2-litre diesel engine – recent leaked documents have suggested it’ll be available in the Giulia with 150 180 or 210bhp. A new GME (Global Medium Engine) 2.0-litre petrol unit producing either 200bhp, 250bhp or 280bhp is also likely to feature in both

models, while eventually we may even see a hot version of the SUV using the twin-turbo 2.9-litre V6 from the launch Giulia with up to 500bhp. Reports have suggested that the Giulia has been delayed, but Auto Express understands that work has simply been slowed to allow development of the new SUV to catch up with that of the saloon. Alfa is keen to cash in on the huge global demand for SUVs as soon as possible, especially in the two markets it’s targeting for growth: China and the US. The launch of the new wave of global Alfas is also casting doubt over the future of the Giulietta hatchback, with sources from within Alfa suggesting that it’s replacement will be ‘something different’ – possibly a Qashqai-sized SUV.

Rover and out for Moyes

By Andrew Atkinson David Moyes has been left pondering what could have been - after being surprisingly sacked as manager at Basque club Real Sociedad. “I am disappointed to have left Real Sociedad," said Moyes, back home in my home City of Preston, Lancashire. After his exit from RS, Moyes was linked with the vacant coach role at Blackburn Rovers - now filled by Paul Lambert. Manchester United, Everton and Preston North End ex-boss Moyes was sacked in the wake of the Basque club's two wins this season in La Liga. “When I accepted the job at Real last November, my remit was to avoid relegation - and retain La Liga status - we succeeded in attaining that," said Moyes, sacked this month by Real Sociedad. Moyes could have been in the Blackburn Rovers dug out at former club Preston this

weekend (Nov 21) as the Lilywhites hosted their arch Lancashire rivals at Deepdale. Moyes, 52, was at Preston during 19932002, as a player and manager. With Moyes having a good relationship with current Blackburn Rovers MD Derek Shaw, former Chairman at Preston, who is to say the sacking at Real came too late for him to arrive at Ewood Park? Without naming clubs who had been in for Moyes, he said: “I made a firm promise to Real Sociedad to honour my contract." As reported in the CoastRider last week Moyes remains to be linked to Celtic, where he played in the 80s. While at Real Sociedad Moyes was linked with vacancies at Newcastle United, Leicester City, Sunderland and Aston Villa. "It is disappointing not to be able to fulfil the commitment at Real - especially when I have turned down a number of job opportunities - in recent months,” said Moyes.

Racing San Miguel defeat Roberto to lead 'Monte' Monte in derby win to promotion

R. San Miguel 3-0 Cd Montesinos Fc By Andrew Atkinson CD Montesinos Fc failed to turn the tables on 'Bogey' team and near neighbours Racing San Miguel in the Segunda Regional Grupo League derby with a 3-0 defeat. CD Montesinos pressed the RSM goal, with winger Carlos threatening, aided by Montesinos forwards, but the visitors failed to capitalise. And, on 29 minutes, following foul by Dimitry, a free-kick led to Racing San Miguel take a 1-0 lead. RSM had a goal disallowed, adjudged offside by the referee on 44 minutes, that caused mayhem on the pitch - and in the stands - at the newly refurbished stadium. HT: 10. In the second half Racing San Miguel outclassed Montesinos, with stylish ballplay throughout. And, following a misplaced pass in the Montesinos defence, keeper Lopez produced a fine save. On the hour mark Montesinos conceded a penalty, which was duly netted, for Racing San Miguel to lead 2-0. And on 79 minutes RSM completed the rout to race into a 3-0 lead. Indiscipline in the game by Montesinos led to unnecessary bookings. CD Montesinos FC dropped to sixth place in the table, ahead of R. San Miguel on goal difference, in seventh spot. It was only CD Montesinos' second defeat of the season under new coach Roberto, who will be looking for improvement when

they host San Isidro, who have leaked 41 goals, on Sunday (Nov 29). CD Dolores suffered their first defeat of the campaign - with a shock 3-1 home defeat against CD Murada - but remain in top spot. SS Fulgencio bagged eight goals in an emphatic 8-0 win at lowly Todo Deporte, with the victors closing the gap at the top of the table to three points, with CD Dolores on 27 points and CD Benijofar on 26 points. On Saturday CD Benijofar ran riot against Deportivo Orihuela in a 4-0 win in the Segunda Regional Grupo League to take top spot from CD Dolores - who played CD Murada on Sunday. Grupo Caliche, defeated 4-1 by CD Montesinos last week, bounced back to take a point in a 2-2 draw against Sporting Orihuela. Formentera CF also shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw against Callosa Dep. B in Saturday's fixtures; with CD Borneo pulling away from the bottom end of the table, with a 2-1 away win at San Isidro, who remain second-bottom. Sunday's results: R. San Miguel 3-0 CD Montesinos FC; Todo Deporte 0-8 SS Fulgencio; CD Dolores 1-3 CD Murada. Saturday results: Atl. Benejuzar 1-7 RP Orihuela; CD Benijofar 4-0 Dep. Orihuela; G. Caliche 2-2 S. Orihuela; Formentera 1-1 Callosa Dep B; San Isidro 1-2 CD Borneo; CD Almoradi B 4-0 R. Orihuela. Results: (Saturday) CD Benijofar 4-0 Dep. Orihuela; G. Caliche 2-2 S. Orihuela; Formentera 1-1 Callosa Dep B; San Isidro 1-2 CD Borneo.

CD Montesinos FC new coach Roberto, supporters club 'Full Monte' new President Eddie Cagigao, and striker Wallace Exclusively talk to Coast Rider sports reporter ANDREW ATKINSON about the Alicante based club's future. Los Montesinos based football club CD Montesinos FC have aspiring ambitions, hopefully with the backing of the local council, as the Alicante based outfit enter a new era. "With the newly appointed manager Roberto in all the club is currently on a high. There's a new buzz in the town", said the 'Full Monte' supporters club new President Eddie Cagigao. "We thank everybody that has helped the club and hopefully that will continue in the future. From the 'Full Monte' point of view we will continue to help," said Eddie. The Segunda Regional Grupo club attract hundreds of supporters for their home fixtures at the Municipal Ground: "We are one of the best supported clubs in the lower leagues in Spain", said Treasurer Howard Yeats, a stalwart of the 'Full Monte' supporters club. CD Montesinos FC have also appointed a newly elected club President in Philippe. And with his leadership they have ambitions to erect a new stand. Mayor Jose Manuel Butron attended an open day at the club in October when supporters were introduced to the club's first team squad new coach and President - along with the youth teams. It is hoped the Mayor will help with the club's ambitions in future years. Eddie is in his second spell as the 'Full Monte' supporters President, having replaced Fred Griggs, who died during the summer: "Fred Griggs was a big man in football, a true campaigner for the game. ”Now it is my aim as his successor to increase the fan base and forge new links

with the football club", said Eddie. "The new committee are eager to do this. They are very keen to include us more into the fabric of the club. We are here to help in any way we can. It has been agreed to look into creating more seating area on the left side of the ground, with perhaps metal stands being erected in sections", said Eddie. CD Montesinos FC have got off to a great start to the 2015-16 campaign under new coach Roberto. And striker Wallace is hoping to help the club win promotion this season. "We want to win every game and win promotion", said Wallace, who is one of the strikers to fill the gap of the club's former prolific goal scorer Vazquinho who joined Sporting Saladar in the summer. "Hopefully new coach Roberto Cases will do well. All the players are behind Roberto and his staff," said Wallace, who supports Liverpool and Atletico Madrid. With Los Montesinos town celebrating its 25th anniversary this year hopefully CD Montesinos FC will continue those celebrations into 2016 - with promotion. "There is a real buzz within the club. Hopefully we will have a successful season", said Eddie Cagigao. And Roberto said: "I don't like to make predictions. But we will always give our best - and who knows where we can end up?"

Torrevieja lose 1-0 to Paterna in the Nelson Mandela CD Torrevieja continue to disappoint and as the Christmas Break approaches will be hoping that Santa brings them a decent goal scorer, defence, a few more euros for the club coffers, more supporters and lots of goals. Before kick off a minutes silence was also held for former Genral Secretary of the International Supporters Club, The Torry Army, Brian Phillips. The Torry Army said: “It is with great sadness we have to report that Torry Army member and big Sports fan and avid follower of CD Torrevieja and Southampton, Brian Phillips passed away. I am sure that all your thoughts at this sad time are with his wife Pat.” We here at the Coastrider also pass on our condolences to Pat and the family. Sadly, it is also becoming an easy exercise to predict what’s going to happen in a standard Torrevieja game. They start well, even superbly at times and usually control the first half hour playing deep and repeatedly from the back. When these moves are not transformed into goal, sadly the picture

darkens, and with this inaccurate passes, poor judgement, passes to the opposition, and usually a momentarily loss in concentration when the defence should simply clear the ball up field but instead fails and that cost is a goal. After that, they push and push and have an urgency that they seem to miss until they go a goal behind. And on Sunday, this pattern repeated itself yet again, in a new episode of a cyclical nightmare that leaves Torrevieja fighting to get away from a relegation playoff spot. As half time approached, yet another moment of indecisiveness

allowed Paterna's David Gil to convert a nothing of a chance into a goal that would give the visitors all three points and leave Torrevieja four from bottom in the league with 13 points from 15 games and yet another one nil defeat. This was their fifth defeat by a solitary goal this season. Torrevieja once again had the majority of the ball, but didn't seem to know what to do with it after the half hour mark. They caused havoc down both wings but then reverted to a holding the ball game and keeping the ball in the middle of the field that did not stretch their Valencian opponents and allowed them to counterattack on the break with Torry just not providing any real threats. Both the team and the supporters looked resigned to defeat as they left the field and the stadium. What the future holds for Torry in the New Year will be watched with interest. Normally, CD Torrevieja lose a number of players after each Christmas and this year will probably see more of the same. Club Deportivo Torrevieja: Miguel

Serna, Vicente Boix, Adrián Banderas (Carasco 56'), Javi Selvas, Jorge (Burguillos 56'), Martín, Higón, Sánchez (Brani 79'), César, Rubén Suárez and Luis Carlos. Paterna Club de Fútbol: Borja, Nacho, Fran, Selu ©, Fernando, Amarilla, Kai (Alberto 62'), Prieto, Abarca (Darío 73'), Rivera and David Gil (Álex Gil 82'). The club just play two games in December with the next home game, also to be played at the Nelson Mandela Stadium while the Vicente Garcia Stadium field is re-seeded, on December 13th against UD Rayo Ibense who are presently 11th in the league.

CF Torrevieja receives award from the Football Federation The President of CF Torrevieja, Joaquín Sala, and coach of the Under 18 "A" team, Helios Martinez collected the Champions trophy that the team obtained last season. As is tradition, the trophies were awarded at

the gala organized every year by the Valencian Football Federation. Last season the team had a brilliant regular season in which they took first position, being one of the top four clubs in the regional category, which is divided into six groups in the region. This path even served them to be exempt from the first round of play offs for promotion, but they were eliminated in the second round by the Celtic Elche, who came second to Torrevieja in the league standings. Although there was an expectation for promotion to National League, which has not been achieved since the late 90s, the group lost against Elche 2-0 at home and had a goalless draw in Torrevieja. However, promotion might have been a

possibility if Torrevieja had played their strongest team of Youth players. However, their coach chose to play the team that had won the league. However, due to the very nature of youth competition, all but five of this team are now over 18 and have moved onto adult football, thus playing for promotion was more of a swansong game for the players, with the majority not having any hope of playing this season, even if they had achieved promotion. Such is the way that the system is set up in Spain, with the older teams either benefiting or hindering the team below them. On a much more positive note, CF Torrevieja's Youth 'A' team are presently top of their league and this year will be hoping to once again reach the play offs, and if successful, this will allow this season's B team, who next year will become the A team, to play in the top category, if they are successful. Should this be the case, it would also mean that this season's Cadet 'A' might attract back some of their top players who have been scouted by other teams, to play for CF Torrevieja in the top category, so everyone locally is hoping for local success for this year's Youth 'A' team.

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos asked the club's fans for "forgiveness" after their 4-0 home defeat by Barcelona left them six points below their rivals. But the centre-back insisted the players still believed in Rafael Benitez, who was managing in El Clasico for the first time. "Obviously we are standing firmly by the manager," Ramos said. "In order to be successful you have to remain united, and that's even more the case when things don't go well." However in the world of football gossip, Wales forward Gareth Bale's future at Real Madrid is in doubt after his side's 4-0 home defeat by Barcelona on Saturday, with Manchester United preparing to make a bid for the 26-yearold. (The Sun) Fellow Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo, 30, was furious after that defeat and wants manager Rafael Benitez replaced, reportedly saying: "Either he goes, or I go." (Daily Telegraph) Meanwhile, France legend Zinedine Zidane has distanced himself from the possibility of replacing Benitez, claiming he is fully focused on his role as manager of the club's B team, Castilla. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is keen to sign Lazio midfielder Lucas Biglia, 29, but will face competition from Manchester United for his signature and Southampton are "desperate" to keep hold of forward Sadio Mane, 23, and want him to sign a new contract to end interest from Manchester United and Chelsea. The Daily Star back page claims Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has told midfielder Dele Alli to "grow up" after his early booking against West Ham ruled him out of next Sunday's game with Chelsea and Manchester City's France right-back Bacary Sagna, 32, says he should not have played against Liverpool so soon after the Paris attacks last week. The transfer window is just around the corner with Manchester United and Arsenal interested in Juventus

defender Daniele Rugani, 21, who is highly-rated despite a lack of first-team opportunities at the Italian champions. Argentine midfielder Manuel Lanzini, 22, currently on loan at West Ham from UAE side Al Jazira Club, says it is "an honour" to be linked with a move to Liverpool while Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard, 23, is to discuss a new deal that could see him double his wages to ÂŁ50,000 a week say the Daily Mirror. Former Arsenal and Manchester United striker Robin van Persie, 32, is set to leave Fenerbahce to return to Dutch club Feyenoord, the team with which he began his career and Arsenal midfielder Gedion Zelalem, 18, is set to extend his stay on loan at Rangers until the end of the season. However, fellow Gunners midfielder Francis Coquelin, 24, could be out until the New Year after suffering a knee injury during Saturday's defeat against West Bromwich Albion. Former Newcastle manager John Carver says current boss Steve McClaren needs to sign more English players if the club are to improve in the Premier League. Crystal

Palace boss Alan Pardew hopes ex-Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye will get more protection from the referee in Monday's Premier League game against Sunderland than he did against Manchester United. Sunderland have been linked with moves for Lorient left-back Raphael Guerreiro, 21, and striker Benjamin Moukandjo, 27, after Black Cats boss Sam Allardyce watched the French side's 2-1 loss to Paris St-Germain over the weekend. Southampton have been warned by the Football Association about the behaviour of fans at St Mary's Stadium - with police investigating a flare being thrown on to the pitch during the recent match against Bournemouth. Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish claims the Eagles have the "biggest potential of any single football club in the country" as he prepares to sell a 36% stake to American investors. Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel, 30, says the 4-1 victory at Manchester City on Saturday proves that new boss Jurgen Klopp is a winner and that he has instilled more belief in the players.
