Last stretch of the 71st edition of the Tour of Spain comes to Alicante

On Saturday Eduardo Dolon and Cesar Sanchez visited Santiago de Compostela to assist in the presentation of La Vuelta, The Tour of Spain, cycling event, which will feature two decisive stages on the Costa Blanca. The riders will visit the province on Friday, September 9th in Javea to participate in an individual time trial, ending in Calpe. "The outcome of the 71st edition of the Tour of Spain will be decided in Alicante,” said the President of the Provincial Government, César Sánchez, during the presentation in Santiago de Compostela. This international sporting event, will feature the last two stages here before reaching Madrid and will run entirely through the Costa Blanca. In this regard, Sanchez stressed the importance of the race from a tourist point of view, by its very nature, being broadcast on television and attracting a worldwide audience. "The race stage is undoubtedly one of the best stages of La Vuelta due to the great interest

and expectation it generates, broadcasting to over 190 countries around the world, showing off our landscape, tourism and rich heritage of Costa Blanca treasures,” said the president. A day later, on Saturday 10th September, cyclists will show their qualities and resistance as climbers on a day where the interior of the province will become the main protagonist. The stage starts in Benidorm, and will pass through the towns of La Nucia, Polop, Bolulla,

In total 184 kilometres of myocardial exercise is including on the four mountain passes finishing with Sierra de Aitana that features a 1,510 meter ascent. The vice president and deputy of Tourism, Eduardo Dolon, who was also in the Palace of Congresses and

Exposicions of Galicia in presenting this event, said: “the Costa Blanca Tourism Board is working on the design of a program of complementary activities that will be held to mark the passage of the Tour through Alicante, with the aim of involving all citizens in this festival of sport. In the coming months, the Board is scheduled to attend numerous sporting trade fairs, starting with Velofollies, to be held this week in the Belgian city of Kortrijk.” In addition, throughout this year,

the independent body will actively participate in the development of events such as the Tour of Valencia and the 'Toy Tour'. The head of the Provincial Government also referred to the significant impact that this event generates to the economy of the Costa Blanca, as the cyclists and the entire technical team accompanying them, around 2,500 people, will spend two nights in hotels in the province. In addition, one must take into account issues such as spending on leisure and the great tourist impact a competition of this nature entails. "Tourism is the heart of the economy of our province and also the foundation of the welfare of our people. Therefore, we will continue working in this direction, because our priority is job creation and that, in addition to generating the other productive sectors, is our objective with growing tourism,” concluded Sanchez.

roundabouts and to note that no matter how incredulous it might seem that traffic in the inside lance can cut up traffic in the outside lane if the inside lane wishes to turn left, they do have the right of way by Spain's traffic law, so please drive carefully. During 2016 Spain registered a new record low in the number of fatalities per accident since 1960. Last year there were 1,126 deaths from traffic accidents on urban roads: 6 fewer than in 2014. Spain continues to rank as

the fifth country with the best road safety and is next to Denmark and the United Kingdom, the only other EU countries that closed 2015 with fewer deaths than in 2014. The decline of victims is repeated for the twelfth consecutive year. The death toll represents a record low since 1960, the first

year in which statistics are available, when there were 1,300 people, with a scenario of mobility quite different. In 1960 there were one million vehicles and in 2015 the fleet exceeds 31 million. Next week the CoastRider will present a complete look at Spain;s driving statistics. Drive carefully.

Ed 'Stewpot' Stewart dies at 74 Former Radio 1 and Radio 2 DJ, Crackerjack, Top Of The Pops presenter and celebrity Ed Stewart passed away on Saturday January 9th, after being admitted to hospital following a stroke. Edward Stewart Mainwaring (23 April 1941 – 9 January 2016), known as Ed "Stewpot" Stewart, was principally known for his work as a DJ on BBC Radio 1 (particularly the Saturday morning Junior Choice) and BBC Radio 2 and as a presenter for Top of the Pops and Crackerjack on BBC Television.

Stewart was the son of a Treasury solicitor, in Exmouth, Devon, on 23 April 1941. He attended St Edward's School, Oxford, and his broadcasting career began in Hong Kong. While touring there as bass player with a jazz group, he gained a job on a local radio station as a sports commentator, then as an announcer and, finally, as a disc jockey. He remained at this station for four years. In July 1965 Stewart became a DJ on the offshore station Radio London and was its chief DJ by the time it closed on 14 August 1967. Within weeks of Radio London closing in 1967, Stewart became one of the first DJs to join BBC Radio 1, presenting Happening Sunday and What's New. In 1968, Stewart took over the weekend morning Junior Choice show, where he remained for 12 years. In 1968 he recorded the charity single "I Like My Toys", a cover of The Idle Race song, as "Stewpot And Save The Children Fund Choir". In 1972 he also presented Radio 1's Sunday Sport show. One week in early 1972, he stood in for Alan "Fluff" Freeman on Pick of the Pops, as well as sitting in for the likes of David Hamilton and Terry Wogan through the 1970s. On 10 September 1973 Stewart became the first presenter of Radio 1's Newsbeat programme. Stewart

became a regular presenter of the BBC television programme Top of the Pops in 1971. He also presented the children's programme Crackerjack from 1973 to 1979, and had a short-lived programme Ed and Zed. In 1980 Stewart moved to BBC Radio 2, presenting Family Favourites and the weekday afternoon programme from 2.00pm to 4.00pm. He was dropped from the Radio 2 line-up in October 1983. Stewart said he was "shocked and disappointed" by the decision of Radio 2 controller Bryant Marriott not to renew his contract. Stewart moved to the commercial radio station Radio Mercury (now Heart FM), for six years, presenting their mid-morning show. Stewart re-joined BBC Radio 2 in 1991, first presenting a series of shows and then a regular Saturday afternoon show throughout the summer. In 1992, he once again presented weekday afternoons. This time, the show was broadcast from 3.30pm to 5pm, before moving to 3pm to 5pm in the spring of 1996 and 2pm to 5pm in the spring of 1998. In 1995, Stewart made radio history when he broadcast his Radio 2 show live from the summits of Ben Nevis and Snowdon, in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. In the summer of 1999, Stewart was taken off the weekday afternoon slot, moving to his Sunday evening show from 5.00pm to 7.00pm. At the time the official word was that Stewart had decided to go into semiretirement, however he later revealed in his autobiography that he was removed from the afternoon programme by then controller Jim Moir. His Sunday show was a blend of music and chat, plus listeners' letters and 'Where Are They Now?’ a feature that attempts to re-unite old friends who have lost touch with each other. Stewart left Radio 2 in April 2006, not long after releasing his autobiography where he questioned the position of his colleagues Sarah Kennedy and Johnnie Walker on the network. Walker replaced him on Sunday afternoons. Stewart was back for Radio 2's 40th birthday on Sunday 30 September 2007, hosting Junior Choice. He was also heard on the Ken Bruce show and Pop Master on BBC Radio 2 on Tuesday 2 October 2007. Stewart was heard on BBC Radio 2 presenting Junior Choice on Christmas Eve on Monday 24 December 2007. Stewart hosted further editions of Junior Choice on Christmas Day from 2008 to 2015. Stewart also hosted the afternoon show on BBC Radio Bristol for two days in the run up to Christmas 2001.

In February 2005, Stewart took over the weekday afternoon show on Spectrum FM, an English-speaking radio station that broadcasts to Spain and since he was based in Javea at the time, he was also approached by other local stations who wished to use his talents. Stewart was heard on Big L 1395 covering for David Hamilton on 18 December 2006, and also in January 2007. He also covered for Mike Read there in March 2007. He has presented special shows on Classic Gold on Christmas Day 2006, New Year's Day 2007 & also May Day Bank Holiday Monday 2007. He did a one off Sunday morning show (10am-2pm) on KCFM in September 2008. He also stood in for Shaun Tilley on his programme "I Haven't Heard It For Ages" (2.00pm-4.00pm) on Sundays on KCFM 2008/9. Stewart could be heard presenting on Saturday and

Sunday mornings between 9.00am and Noon (February 2009 – September 2009) on internet radio station Wight FM (this was voice tracked). Stewart also stood in for Shaun Tilley on the networked show The Retro Chart Years for a week in August 2009 and again in 2010. He also appears on another of Shaun Tilley's shows The Vintage Top 40 Show, which goes out on various BBC local stations on Sundays at 5pm. In 2014, he took part in a Radio Legends week on BBC Sussex and BBC Surrey. For many years Stewart was the figurehead for children's magazine Look-in, the "Junior TV Times". Starting in 1971 with a feature on a day in his life, he was brought in as a regular with a feature called "'Stewpot's Look-out", which later became "'Stewpot's Newsdesk". They also used his name in other features such as "Stewpot's Starchart". Newsdesk ended in 1980, as did Stewart's association with the magazine. Stewart's two main interests were playing golf (he often met listeners of his programme who volunteered to caddy for him) and football; he was a supporter of Everton F.C. Stewart met his wife when she was 13 and he was 31; they married four years later. They divorced in 2006. The couple had one daughter and a son. He was a close friend of Max Bygraves. On Bygraves's death in 2012 he recalled him as a "unique talent" whose skills as a comedian, actor and singer "brought a lot of pleasure to a lot of people." Stewart was also an advocate and supporter of Phab Ltd, a charity that operates in England and Wales that promotes inclusion for children and adults with disabilities. Stewart attended events annually that helps raise awareness of Phab's work. And for you trivia fans out there, Ed is the mystery male voice asking "Please may I have the pleasure of this dance?" on Lynsey de Paul's UK hit single "Won't Somebody Dance With Me".

Torrevieja's multiparty chaos The outcome of the last National, Local and Regional elections in 2015 have left the entire country in a political quagmire. Spain is now a country, at all levels, that depends on pacts, alliances, coalitions and cooperation all leading to compromise as many things grind to a halt. Local voters should have known better in Torrevieja. For four years they watched on at the in-fighting and complete lack of movement and action that was taking place in Orihuela, as the four party coalition failed to agree on almost everything. But it was not a lesson learnt and almost 50% of the Torrevieja's population that could vote, decided not to. The result being that the city now has Spain's only five party coalition, a pentapartito government, which is run though giving other minor parties in government concessions in order to hang onto power. With Spain still undecided as to whether another National election will be needed this spring to try and move the country forward, local focus is now turned towards the pentapartito in Torrevieja and the cracks that are beginning to show. To date, the pentapartito under the maximum two year leadership of mayor Jose Manuel Dolon (Greens) have offered Torrevieja little in terms of moving the city forward in a positive fashion. Instead they have dwelled on the past and looked for different things they could put the blame on the former Partido Popular government for, rather than looking for ways to move the city forward. The Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre was closed: the Municipal Theatre remains closed: the new Sports Pavilion and Semana Santa Museum have yet to open: the Friday market has not moved: the Padron desk at the Department of Tourism was closed: the city still does not have an Office of the Foreign Residents: pubs, restaurants, clubs and business have been closed: the sports gala and salt queen gala have been moved from 2015 to 2016: dozens of shows and performances have been cancelled: work on the La Siesta park ground to a halt: you can only see a councillor or the mayor if you make a request at the PROP office so the open door policy has never taken place: the Mayor and various councillors told lies about shore excursions and the arrival of Torrevieja's first Cruise Ship and then tried to blame the PP saying that should the arrival not be a success, it was the fault of the PP and not their fault; and the list goes on and on. Lest we forget, six months after the pentapartito taking power last June, 2015, foreign residents are still without any direct point of contact with the Town Hall as although promises were made,

the city is still without a Foreign Residents Office. The lack of cooperation in Torrevieja has been noticed in the Spanish National Press, who have looked behind the 'spin' of Mayor Jose Manuel Dolon and can see the cracks beginning to form. With only a couple of weeks remaining before Spain forms a coalition government or goes back to the Voting booth, Torrevieja is being seen as a city that is getting maximum attention as to possible National political pacts. Torrevieja can be studied as a model for the results of a multiple party alliance, in this case, nothing less than a pentapartito against the most voted for party the PP and that José Manuel Dolon (Greens), as the front as mayor, many see him as an example of chaos and unstable management. One of the episodes that support this view starred as the local government team spent 81,000 euros of aid for training the unemployed that was lost, due to lack of qualified staff to teach some courses. In addition, municipal officials blamed the failure to apply to an order from the Valencian Government, also governed by a tripartite agreement. Another missed opportunity by the torrevejense pentapartito has been to work towards opening a university in the city, which had even budgeted for by the previous government team from the PP. Last week the Mayor Jose Manuel Dolon tried to make a name for himself by saying that the Music Conservatory was unfit for purpose. He said that neither a piano nor drums could be hoisted to the upper floor of the building. However, there are 22 classrooms on the ground floor and no need to hoist these or other heavy instruments to the upper floors. He went on to mention that in the Music Conservatory that the ceilings were not high enough for dancers to lift their partners and that there were no changing facilities not showers for them. However, once again he seems to have missed the point that this was designed

Warmest December on record December 2015 was the warmest December on record. According to data collected by the Mastral Project Weather Stations, December 2015 saw Torrevieja recording an average temperature of 15.3 degrees Celsius, the highest median value from when data was first available back in 1927. Even without official data, local residents and visitors commented time and time again as to how warm and dry the month had been. December failed to bring the normal cooler temperatures normally associated with the start of winter with almost every day throughout the month showing temperatures above normal. The 16th was the warmest day of the month with a maximum temperature of 24 degrees Celsius, one of the highest temperature on record for December. As for rainfall, December was an extremely dry month; one of the

driest of the last 30 years, with a rainfall of about a litre per square meter when the average is about 26 litres per square meter. Around Valencia in general, according to data from the State Meteorological Agency, December 2015 was an extraordinary month climatically as regionally, temperatures were the warmest on record since at least 1950, and rain has not been as scarce since 1974. January 2016 began in a very similar fashion with high temperatures during the beginning of this week although cooler weather is expected during the second full week of the year. At the moment the chance of any significant rainfall is very low. as a superior conservatory of music and it was never intended to be a dance studio. However, many other newspapers just printed the Mayor's press release without event thinking about what had been said by the Mayor and possibly by journalists who have never been inside the conservatory of music to see what is there for themselves. The Partido Popular, now in opposition regretted that this University project that is also linked to the International Auditorium of Torrevieja, may not go ahead nor other large projects related to sports, health, tourism and culture even though they left 21,000,000€, yes, twenty one million euros, in the coffers for the pentapartito to continue the positive growth of the city. The funds given to the pentapartito also addressed other areas such as social services and for other purposes. Trade and commerce in the Town Centre has also been seen as a fiasco and has left a bad taste in some areas of its current local government, such as the last edition of the event, Halloween' Survival Zombie. For this event, the pentapartito promised an influx of more than 2,000 people to the hamlet of La Mata, when in reality there were just fifty. The PP opposition also reported that this cost 18,000€ from public funds when in other municipalities the event was staged for free or at a much reduced cost such as in El Campello. Not only did the organisers benefit from the 18,000€ paid by the pentapartito but each participant then also paid to take part in the event. There are other events such as Black Friday, Halloween, the Sports Gala and the Grand Summer Parade that can be counted as failed events or that the pentapartito just stopped. The latest controversy, from just last week arises from two contracts for two employment workshops employment with price differences of up to 300% in some materials, with the council trying the backtrack and cover their tracks in thinly veiled excuses. The Councillor for fiestas also gave the contract for printing the May Fair to a company in Toledo, without offering this to tender or to any local business, which is once against their own rules of competition. Six months have passed since the pentapartito came into power. It remains to be seen who will be the next Spanish Prime Minister as the national parties continue to talk, citing Torrevieja as an example of how large party coalitions just do not seem to work, as too many people, parties and individuals have their own agendas and ideas of what they want out of the power sharing agreement. www.facebook.com/proyectomastral or follow them on: www.twitter.com/proyectomastral.

Club Torrevieja enter their tenth year It has been an interesting six months for Club Torrevieja with last year's president Keith Lakin moving south and Ron Blackwell, who was president for the previous four years, taking over once again. The run for June was named 345degree run, lovely weather, well attended we drove to the end of the La Manga Strip and back to San Pedro marina where we had a good meal. Hence the 345 degrees. On to the 19th July and the Cartagena Naval Museum, again very well attended run and good weather. The only problem was the day had to be changed from the usual Sunday run to Friday as museum was closed at weekends, one has to wonder why but it is an excellent place to visit, and takes around one and a half hours to take in all it has to offer. This followed by lunch at El Patio Dos. August 29th was the traditional cool run, because of the age of the cars and the extreme heat. A short of around 25 kms. to where we had pre-booked a three

course meal at the restaurant El Cortijo. Claudio and his staff provided us with a very impressive meal with excellent service, and to end the day we were treated to an authentic flamenco show. September 20th two of our members had organised a run to the walled village of Aledo. On arrival we were met with a police escort, take through the narrow streets to the Watch Tower which open specially for us to visit. No all members made it up the steps to the top, the views from up there were spectacular. For lunch we travelled back down the hill a couple of kms to the Santa Ana Hotel which used to be an old monastery, where again we had a fine meal. November 1st we held our 9th Anniversary Dinner at Sunrise Restaurant at Playa Flamenca, this was a special day for the ladies as it gave them chance to put away their spanners and get out their handbags. The annual awards were presented Most Valued Member, The Hand of Friendship, and the Trabant Trophy to various Members. Sunday 15th November Neville organised a trip to Jumilla to a bodega, the run over the hills was spectacular, with views beyond compare to anywhere in the world, the

guided tour of the Bodega was excellent and has been owned by the same family for generations. We travelled on to Pinoso for lunch on the way home. Just over 200 kms. round trip - an excellent day. Our annual Christmas bash- was held as usual at Restaurant Rebate, 48 members and guests attended, we were entertained by Raquel Penas Professional Dancers, and during and after lunch we were enthralled by the voice of Nick Gold. All in all a fantastic day - no doubt we will be returning in 2016. Last activity of the year saw us out on 28th December (Innocentes Day) 30 Members enjoyed competing against each other to win the driving skills award, for driving in and out of cones, reverse parking, and throwing oranges into a bucket (if they could whilst driving in a

cone circle) Next challenge was the mini golf at Quesada, which was won outright by one of our German members, Dieter, who incidentally won the driving skills award as well. We also dined at the mini golf restaurant. All in all a very excellent year for Club Torrevieja Classics and Specialists Cars, International Motoring Club. Rock legend David Bowie passes away

More sad news this week as rock and roll icon David Bowie passed away on January 10th. Rep Steve Martin said in a statement that the "Ashes to Ashes" singer was surrounded by his family when he died Sunday after an 18-month battle against cancer. "While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family's privacy during their time of grief," The singer's son, filmmaker Duncan Jones, issued a confirming statement of his own on Twitter. Tributes poured in on social media from, among others, British Prime Minister David Cameron and comedian Ricky Gervais, who hosted Sunday night's Golden Globe Awards show in Los Angeles. Bowie sustained a chart-topping career for five decades with hits including "Fame", "Heroes" and "Let's Dance", has died at the age of 69, four days after his birthday and two days after the release of "Blackstar", his 29th album, which had been timed to coincide with his birthday. The singer had kept a low profile in recent years after reportedly suffering a heart attack in the 2000s, and it had not been widely known that he was struggling with cancer. Bowie will long be remembered a trendsetter as he set the music world alight with the release of the 1972 album, "The Rise of Ziggy Stardust and Spiders from Mars," which introduced one of

music's most famous personas. Ziggy Stardust, a concept album that imagined a genre-bending rock star from outer space trying to make his way in the music world. Bowie, who was born David Jones in the Brixton area of South London, became an icon of glam rock era of the early 1970s. His music covered all genres from the rock sound of "Changes" to the disco soul of "Young Americans," cowritten with John Lennon, to a collaboration with Brian Eno in Berlin that produced "Heroes." "My entire career, I've only really worked with the same subject matter," Bowie said in a 2002 interview with The Associated Press. "The trousers may change, but the actual words and subjects I've always chosen to write with are things to do with isolation, abandonment, fear and anxiety -- all of the high points of one's life." His performance of "Heroes" was a highlight of a concert for rescue workers after the 2001 World Trade Center attacks. "What I'm most proud of is that I can't help but notice that I've affected the vocabulary of pop music. For me, frankly, as an artist, that's the most satisfying thing for the ego." Bowie was married twice, to the actress and model Mary Angela "Angie" Barnett from 1970-80, and to international supermodel Iman since 1992. He had two children -- Duncan Jones and Alexandra Zahra Jones -- one with each wife. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Torrevieja's Symphony Orchestra sell out For the first time the Torrevieja Symphony Orchestra decided to put on two shows, marking the VI edition of their New Year, Magic Kings Concert. Both shows should out, with 1,460 or so people in the audience on both nights, going to show that even if the pentapartito government is not giving them their full support, the people of Torrevieja are. Orchestra director Pepe Sanchez said: “After performing two concerts for the New Year and seeing that the International Auditorium of Torrevieja for the two days was completely full, I now feel a sense of great personal satisfaction. I congratulate all the members of the Torrevieja Symphony Orchestra (OST)

and thank all those who with their work and help make it possible for the auditorium to be available for the Symphony Orchestra to use their facilities, and a public that wants and values the work of the orchestra. Torrevieja's Symphony Orchestra entertained 1,450 spectators with a fully entertaining two hour and two act show. With more than 50 accomplished musicians on stage and the audience clapping along on numerous occasions, it was a fun filled night of music, and the perfect way for music lovers to herald in the New Year. The audience was a truly international affair, with many International residents and visitors making

enjoying the show. Act Two was full of light hearted music along with a few favourites, including the ever popular Blue Danube, a Jota and a light-hearted, comedy anvil playing piece. The packed auditorium gave the Orchestra a well-deserved standing ovation at the end of the show and were reluctant to accept its conclusion, but after prolonged ovations, they forced the orchestra to continue with two more pieces loaded with good humour: the Feuerfest Jockey polka and finishing for good with the audience clapping along and being conducted during the Radetzky March.

Campoverde Canine Club The latest results from the end of the Obedience and Agility courses are now in and the winners have been presented with their certificates and trophies at the Polideportivo Sports ground, Pinar de Campoverde. Our congratulations go out to all who passed their final examination. We hope to see you again in January applying your skills in a higher class. The C.C.C. was formed in July 2000 and since then many owners have benefited from expert tuition by a (UK) home office approved instructor and are now proud of the way they are able to control their best friends. Prior to the presentation a “Fun Day” was held where thirty one handlers and dogs competed in various events such as Statues, Egg/Potato and Spoon and the Recall past a delicious Sausage. A great time was had by all the handlers and

friends and families. Only one person was missing: - Morag and her pup “Toby” who chose to be in sunny Scotland for Christmas and of course Hogmanay, we look forward to seeing you on your return. Our thanks go out to Marlene, one of our stalwarts, for all the hard work (and supplying all the prizes) in making the “End of Year” party go down so well. Character of the year award, there really was only one winner, the amazing Lucy Lou handled by Carole Cooke. The winner of the Basic Class with a very high score of 109 out of a possible 110 marks was Charlotte Coe and her GSD “Kiarra” which was really an incredible result. The result shows how much effort was put into the training. In second place was Pat Frewin and her little dog Tito. Pat is held in high regard for her training ability and I have high hopes for Tito in the future

Mosquitoes begin New Year in January

By Andrew Atkinson We all fear the dreaded Mosquito 'Mozzie' - bites but do not expect them to start the New Year as early as January. "I have been bitten by a mosquito for the first time ever in January," said Algorfa resident Sandra Piddock, in the wake of an early New Year show by mosquitoes. Spring and summer months are deemed to be the time of year when the mosquito is at its height - not January. Along with the native Spanish mosquito the Tiger Mosquito population has grown on the South coast of Spain in recent years - having first been reported in Catalunya in 2004. Despite attempts to reduce the mosquitoes - following increasing pesticide spraying - they remain high in numbers. Mosquitoes are able to carry twenty diseases - including the Chikungunya virus - carried by the black and white striped Tiger Mosquito that is on the increase in southern Spain. The Chikungunya virus was first reported in the Alicante region of Gandia. Infection causes joint pain, muscle pain, fever, nausea, headaches and fatigue. Torrevieja Salt Lakes have been a major breeding ground for mosquitoes, along with the breeding of mosquitoes taking place in water - mainly stagnant -

including in gardens. There have been various deterrent methods, from sprays, to that of planting lemon trees, lavender, with aloe vera named as a skin applicant, following bites. With the native Spanish mosquito and the Tiger Mosquito - native in Southern Asia - Deet (50%), garlic, even Bovril, has been suggested, as a preventative measure against bites. Citronella, Rosemary, peppermint, castor, lemon Eucalyptus, lemongrass and cinnamon oils are others. In the City of Torrevieja and surrounding towns the mosquito returns every year - with areas including Quesada, Los Montesinos, San Luis, Los Balcones, and Guardamar, among many others, being near to Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja salt lakes. Preventative measures have increased - with additional spraying - in a bid to eliminate or reduce mosquitoes being undertaken in 2015. Cuidad Quesada resident Maureen Gaw said: "I have never had mosquito bites at this time of year before - I am getting really fed up of them. As a preventative measure Deet is the best. I use it all through the summer - but it now looks like I will have to us Deet all the year round." San Isidro based Kay Smith said: "My husband tried everything under the sun - he was a 'magnet' for mozzies. However, since a Spanish friend told him to try 'Aqua de Colonia' by Nenuco - we have used it for 18 months - he has not had one bite. So it is well worth people trying it." June-Anne Whitlock from Guardamar said: "We use Aqua de Colonia too. It is amazing, along with Lavender and Avon's 'Skin so Soft'. They all work well."

classes. Just missing out on the trophies with creditable performances were Carole, Hugh, Morag and Sheila, the marks were so close between the top six dogs I am sure that your time will come. The higher Class was won by Carol

Johnson and her Spanish Water Dog Lolita. The highly commendable score of 132.6 marks out of 140 by Lolita was only possible because of the handling by Carol was a fitting result in the higher grade. So, well done Carol. The final trophy, the Fred Moeken Memorial Trophy, awarded each year, to the dog which has made the most progress was won by Charlotte Coe and her best friend Kiarra in recognition for all the effort put in to their training. I am sure that my good friend Fred would approve of the choice of winner. New courses started on 9th January 2016 but you can join anytime. If you are interested in training your four legged friend. US parents who concealed dead child released by Girona court The parents of a seven-year-old child who was found dead inside their home in Girona have been released by a judge, but barred from leaving the country. The couple, who are US citizens, had their passports withheld. While initial reports suggested that the child had been dead for four weeks, forensic scientists now believe that the death may have occurred over three months ago, given the advanced state of decay of the body. Both the father and mother told the judge that they thought their son was asleep, said the attorney in the case, Enrique Barata. They claimed that one morning they went into his room but he would not wake up. Although the results of a toxicology test are still pending, violence has already been ruled out and doctors suspect that the child may have died of a respiratory condition, as he suffered from asthma like his mother. Investigators are searching the father’s computer in search of any evidence that the parents were aware that their child’s life was at risk yet did nothing to save

him. Failing to report the child’s death would not constitute a crime if the parents had nothing to do with it, criminal experts said. For now, the charges of involuntary manslaughter have not been dropped. The parents, a US couple who have been living in the Catalan city with their three children for around two years, were arrested on January 5 after the police walked into their duplex and found the body wrapped in blankets on a bed. The family had been spending time

inside the same room with the body and rarely went out at all, leading psychiatrists to believe that they may have been under a collective delusional state. Family members reportedly referred to the child as being merely “asleep.” It has now emerged that the Catalan police had been to the house five days prior to the grisly discovery, after the US consulate was contacted by somebody concerned that no one had heard from the family in a long time. The father spoke with the officers and told them that everything was fine. Then, on January 5, the apartment owner showed up to demand that the family pay the rent they had owed since

September. After getting no answer but hearing loud screaming inside the home, she called the police, who entered the premises and found the body. On Thursday morning, a delegation from the US consulate showed up at the Girona courthouse in charge of the investigation to inquire about the case. The couple, a 39-year-old engineer and his wife, 38, have failed to provide details of how their child died or why they did not report it. Some experts believe that the fact that the family kept the body and carried on with their lives around it points to them suffering a psychological alteration of reality. One of the strongest working hypotheses is that the youngster may have fallen ill, and that the parents failed to get him the medical attention he required for unknown reasons. The couple has two older children who have been temporarily placed under the care of the Catalan government.

Spanish drug bust nets British and Dutch suspects and three tonnes of cocaine

Spanish police say they have seized three tonnes of cocaine and arrested 12 suspected drug smugglers from Spain, Britain and the Netherlands in a major drugs bust in the north of the country. The seizure in the north-west Galicia region was “the biggest for this type of drug on Galician soil since 1999”, the police said in a statement, without revealing when the operation took place. The cocaine was bound for an important smuggling ring based in the Costa del Sol in southern Spain, the statement added. “Twelve people were detained including those transporting the merchandise, who were Spanish, and the sellers and buyers of the drugs, who were Dutch and British respectively.” Spain’s proximity to north Africa, a key source of hashish, and its close ties with former colonies in Latin America – the world’s main cocaine-producing region – have made it a major gateway into Europe for drug consignments. Last month, police said they had seized 40 pallets made out of 1.4 tonnes of compressed cocaine made to look like wood that arrived on a shipping container from Colombia.

In November, police announced they had arrested Michael Roden, a suspected drug trafficking boss who is listed among Britain’s 10 most wanted fugitives. Roden, also known by his nickname “Dodge”, was wanted by British police in connection with the importation of 70kg of cannabis into Britain from Spain in 2013. Also in November, police detained fellow Briton Robert Dawes, one of Europe’s most wanted drug lords, who was arrested at his luxury villa on the Costa del Sol after an eight-year probe into his alleged links to the Italian mafia and South American cartels. He has since been extradited to France, where he is wanted in connection with the discovery of 1.3 tonnes of cocaine in a Paris airport in 2013. Spain’s southern Costa del Sol has been known as a hideaway for British criminals in the past, especially in the late 1970s and 80s when there were no extradition agreements with Britain. But the situation changed in 2004 with the introduction of European arrest warrants, making it easier to bring British criminals home to face justice.

West Atlantic’s CEO, Gustaf Thureborn, told a press conference in Gothenburg "with great sorrow" that the accident had taken place on Thursday night. A Spanish pilot, aged 42, and a French first officer, 34, were both on board the flight. The captain of the aircraft - who has so far not been named but was said to reside in Spain - joined the company in 2011 and had over 3,000 flight hours under his belt. "What should not happen and may not happen has happened," Thureborn told reporters. The aircraft was understood to have been carrying mail for the Norwegian postal service. It was on its way from Norwegian Gardemoen to Tromsø when it sent out a distress signal in Swedish airspace at 11.31pm, Thureborn said. However the company said it had not yet been established whether or not the crew had died in the crash. A Norwegian F16 plane located the wreckage on the ground between the north-western edge of Swedish lake Akkajaure and the Norwegian border, in an area often known as the Swedish alps. Thureborn told reporters he had been woken up by a phone call two minutes after the airline was alerted about the crash and was at the office 15 minutes later.

Police and mountain rescue teams were dispatched to the scene amid subfreezing temperarures. "The terrain is mountainous and it's 30C, so it's going to take a while before we get there," police spokesman Maria Jakobsson told the TT newswire shortly before 8am. "They sent a very brief 'mayday' and then the plane disappeared from our radar. (…) The weather conditions weren't harsh," Daniel Lindblad, Swedish Maritime Administration press officer, also told TT. "The crash site is very clear. Its total diameter is about 50 metres and there are no large parts but only small fragments left of the aircraft," he added. Police and mountain rescue teams arrived at the site at around 1pm on Friday, after being delayed by treacherous conditions. The aircraft, a Bombardier CRJ-200, is registered in Sweden, but travels between Norwegian destinations. It was manufactured in 1993. Thureborn told reporters that all of the company's planes of the same model had been grounded as a precaution. "In light of the ongoing investigation we can't give you more information about what has happened, but we'll have to await its results. We're happy to offer more information as soon as we have it," he added

Spanish Princess Cristina to Mild winter threatens to face trial for embezzlement derail Spanish exports

Spain’s Princess Cristina is due to go on trial over an alleged embezzlement scam that also involves her husband in a criminal case widely expected to tarnish the image of the monarchy. The trial of the royal couple along with 16 alleged co-conspirators will likely run until the month of June at a court in Palma, on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca, the location of a seaside holiday home for the Spanish royal family. The sister of Spanish King Felipe VI, 50year-old Cristina, will be the first direct member of the royal family facing a criminal trial since the Spanish monarchy was restored in 1975 after the death of Dictator General Francisco Franco. The case is focused on the shady

business dealings conducted by a Palmabased charitable organization, the Noos Institute, chaired by Cristina’s husband, Inaki Urdangarin, from 2004 to 2006. Felipe VI stripped Cristina and her husband of their titles as the duke and the duchess of Palma de Mallorca following their indictment last year. The royal couple had been granted the title by Juan Carlos after their high profile marriage in 1997 at the peak of the popularity of Spain’s royal family. The case was launched in 2010 by a judge investigating corruption allegations among Balearic Islands authorities. It has emerged highly symbolic of perceived corruption among Spain’s elites, including the royal family.

Producers in Murcia are warning that the unseasonably high temperatures experienced in recent weeks are bringing forward harvesting and threaten to derail the 2015/16 winter vegetable campaign. Harvesting of lettuce and broccoli – two of the region’s biggest products – has already got under way in areas around Campo de Cartagena and Guadalentín – several weeks earlier than in a normal year. The mild winter is also keeping demand in check across many central European countries who usually rely on Spanish supplies at this time of year but have been able to meet demand with domestic production so far this season. Demand is believed to be down by 2030 per cent, producers say. “The best thing that could happen

right now is for a cold wave to sweep across central Europe,” Jesús Abenza of Alimer told La Opinión de Murcia. Strawberry production in Huelva has also been brought forward by around one month, leading to a supply glut that has caused prices to fall sharply. Cristóbal Picón of the Costa de Huelva cooperative said that whereas growers were being paid €3-4 per kg in early December this had dropped by 50 per cent at the end of the month, in spite of the Christmas holidays. “The season should just be getting under way but in actual fact production is currently at levels not normally seen until the end of January,” he told Agrodiariohuelva.es. Picón warned that with later varieties also running ahead of schedule, the whole season could be a washout.

Real Club Nautico of Torrevieja 50th year RCNT, The Real Club Nautico Torrevieja is celebrating their fiftieth anniversary this year and to celebrate they have organised a number of events. The first event attracted more than three hundred people of all social, sporting and cultural sectors of Torrevieja attended the gala presentation that starts this 50th year since the founding of RCNT: Real Club Nautico of Torrevieja. Formed back in 1966, RCNT was one of the flagship institutions of the city and became a hub of local society, not only of nautical and sporting activities, but also as a meeting place and city forum. This first event of many that are planned for this anniversary year was presented by local journalist, Francisco Reyes Prieto Perez. The ceremony was opened with the short documentary style publicity film from the 1960s that featured the club in its early days: "Torrevieja, white salt, brown soles." It was then the turn of the Secretary of the RCNT Board, Gabriel Marco, who had the task of announcing each of the events that have been planned throughout the year. Another video documentary; "50 Years of the Yacht Club" gave way the presentation by local craftsman Luis Ruiz Ruiz, who has dedicated his life to rebuilding vessels. The result of his work is that there have been many ships and yachts that have undergone major restoration and been transferred to the club. As such, RCNT President, Germán Soler presented the Golden Shield to Thomas, which had been approved unanimously by the Board of Directors. After this some people linked to the club's various activities took to the stage. The first to speak was the international rower Belén García Girona, then sailing champion, Gorka Peraita, followed by Inés Molla, from the Mermaid Club. Former mayor, Francisco Diez, told a short story illustrated with photos about the picturesque situation chosen for RCNT, on Torrevieja's seafront, before the club built, and was sorry for the issue of uncertainty

about the future of the club, created by the Valencian governments concessions to marinas. After a short interval, the vice president of the Provincial Council of Alicante, Eduardo Dolon, spoke about the Costa Blanca Tourist Board sponsoring different events related to their 50th anniversary, and congratulated the club for showing their selfless assistance towards this special year. After Eduardo Dolon, the mayor of Torrevieja, Jose Manuel Dolon said he was proud that a Club like RCNT could reach fifty and said that the people of Torrevieja will feel even more proud of the Club as the year progresses and more people become involved in their events. To close the speaking proceedings, it was the turn of the president of RCNT, Germán Soler, to return to the stage. He thanked everyone for their presence and revealed that he was delighted to be able to announce that he been present at the signing of the reform of the Sports Club Act, which will allow Clubs to govern

their destiny as entities, without bonds or having to worry about new concessions taking them over, which was welcomed by the audience with applause. The former act meant that the RCNT was living on borrowed time, as the 30 year lease for the concession for the land where the yacht club is built, was shortly to end, leading to an air of uncertainty among members over the past couple of years, as to what would be the future of

the club. To close the gala, opera singer Helena Vallalta, granddaughter of first secretary of the Board of RCNT, Rafael Vallalta, accompanied on piano by Emilio Bayón, performed several opera and operetta arias. The culminating event to celebrate the 50th anniversary will be the Gala Dinner on June 25th, which will be prepared by chefs from "Michelin" star restaurants.

Los Montesinos celebrate Three APAH says 'Thanks' Kings with a 'Magical Evening' By Andrew Atkinson Los Montesinos celebrated the Spanish Christmas tradition of 'The Three Kings' on January 5, 2016 with a 'Magical Evening' in the small Vega Baja town. "The Festival Committee, Team, Municipal School of Theatre and its director Javier Perez Ballesta Gym, Rosi, Musical Group Montesinos and volunteers all contributed to a magical evening and helped generate excitement," a spokesperson from the Committee told The Coast Rider. Children in the Vega Baja town of Los Montesinos, Alicante, were thrilled when Los Tres Reyes Magos - the Three Wise Men - delivered presents at the Festival. The new King of Kings Baby Jesus - is traditionally offered three presents of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh, to the new-born child in Belén (Bethelem). Children had been busy writing letters to the Three Kings - Kings: Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar - as to what they requested as presents on the morning of January 6. Traditionally their Majesties travel by camel from the East, arriving in Spain, to visit villages and cities listening to children’s requests. As in other town's children of Los Montesinos put out something to eat and drink for Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar - with grass and water for the camels. The Epiphany is a tradition in Spain - when children receive presents brought by the Three Kings - not Santa Claus. Hundreds lined the streets in Los Montesinos to celebrate the Three Kings, with the event broadcast live throughout Spain on national television. In Madrid over 100,000

celebrated - including thousands of children catching sweets thrown into the crowd by the Three Kings, as did children in Los Montesinos. In Barcelona the Three Kings arrived by boat at the city’s port - where they were greeted by the Mayor. The Mayor of Los Montesinos Jose Manuel Butron was in attendance as the 2016 Three Kings procession got underway. The oldest Three Kings parade in Spain took place in Alcoy, Alicante in 1885. The roles of the Three Kings have traditionally been played by Councillors. In Los Montesinos the Festival Committee, Team, Municipal School of Theatre director Javier Perez Ballesta Gym, Rosi, Musical Group Montesinos and volunteers all contributed. Former CD Montesinos football star, Brazilian born Vazquinho, was part of the 2016 Three Kings Festival. Vazquinho, a former Player of the Year at the Municipal Stadium based Los Montesinos club, now plays for Sporting Saladar. Los Montesinos Jose Manuel Butron told The CoastRider: "The Three Kings Parade in Los Montesinos was excellent. Thank you to everyone who helped and a Happy 2016."

APAH ANIMAL Rescue Charity would like to thank all their volunteers for their hard work and commitment throughout 2015. They would also like to thank all the people who have supported them both at fund-raising charity events, not only spending in their charity shops but also with the huge amount of donations of clothing, household items and bric-a-brac, which are given into their shops weekly, which in turn allows them to continue their work and to those who adopted their rescued cats and dogs and given them a new 'forever' home Without everyone who volunteers their time to 'work' for APAH, along with everyone who supports them, the charity says they could not rescue, re-habilitate and re-home the amount of dogs and cats that they provide care for. The search for new volunteers never ends and APAH is always looking for help in their shops, their kennels and cattery. If you have some time to spare, love animals, and want to make a difference, please contact them by calling 630 422 563 or find them on www.facebook.com/apahrescuesanpedro. Happy New Years and thanks for your support.

Allan recently moved to the Costa Blanca but is no stranger to Spain having gigged all over this country and over 150 cities worldwide with his 70’s band Flair. As a member of Flair, Allan is extremely proud that the band’s record was produced by Hank Marvin. These days Allan loves to perform solo with acoustic guitar and occasionally with his daughter as a duo. Who are you and what do you do? I am Allan Heiding, Singer, Musician and Entertainer – these days mostly solo but I really enjoy accompanying my daughter as well when we get the chance as a duo. I have a repertoire of over 1500 numbers in all genres and categories of music including Pop, Country, and Folk. It just depends on what the audiences wants. I love entertaining as well as playing and like to create a cosy smiling atmosphere everywhere I play.

How did you start in the business? I saw an advert for a group – the St. Tropez Singers who were looking for someone with my skills. They had a lot of gigs booked in the northern part of Spain, so I applied – that was 1972, a lot has happened since then. What would you be doing if you were not an entertainer? I would probably teach – I have been a choirmaster and music teacher whilst a professional musician so I would enjoy teaching music, singing and performing. As an entertainer who has been your biggest influence? I can't tell since there has been too many! Do you ever get nervous or have you suffered stage fright? Of course the first time, but never the last! I LOOOOOVE challenges!

What was your best moment? I would think it was probably when we performed at Parc de Montjuic i Barcelona for 15000 people, receiving the prize of Best Foreign Entertainment 1974, accompanied by a big band. What has been your worst moment? I have only really had successes, more or less of course, but not a seriously ‘worst moment’! What’s the best piece of advice you have received or would give someone starting out in the business? I have had so much good advice over the years it’s hard for me to pick one single piece. Any little anecdotes or interesting stories? It was such a great day when my group FLAIR and our producer, Hank B. Marvin, got to The EMI – Studios at Abbey Road and saw our studio, in which Paul McCartney & Wings had left their equipment all set up as they had not had chance to move it out. The band had basically ‘lived’ in the studio for the previous two months. Such an amazing moment. Allan arrives in Costa Blanca in January 2016, if you would like to book Allan or find out more – listen to his tracks and get his telephone number, these can be found on the artistsdirect-spain.com website

After Hours at The Black Bull Steak Bar & Restaurant Tell us about yourselves My name is Gummi and I have run the ‘Black Bull’ restaurant, together with my twin brother Christian, for just over a year now. We are located between San Miguel da las Salinas and the village of Torremendo. We are originally from Iceland and have been in Spain for 10 years, since we were teenagers. We went to school and college over here. What made you open a bar/restaurant? Neither of us had done much of this sort of thing before as a job but on several occasions we had organized a “food fest” for the Icelandic community on the Costa Blanca. This was always fishbased with matured skate and fishy tapas. These occasions always went extremely well and inspired us to open a restaurant ourselves. Where did the inspiration for the name come from? In the years before we took over the place had been several different types of establishment with various names, including the ‘Black Bull.’ This was the

name that seemed the most familiar to our locals and we liked it so that is what it became. Who does the cooking? And how would you describe your style? Christian is the head chef, ably assisted by Vicente who is Spanish. This means we can offer an interesting mix of Icelandic and Spanish cuisine. Vicente’s forte is ‘Speciality Spanish Tapas’ while Christian particularly likes cooking steaks and Hunter’s Chicken, which contains bacon with Edam and mature cheddar cheeses. Also we all like traditional English food such as fish and chips. What’s your favourite dish on the menu? I’ve asked around

on this one. My personal favourite is spare ribs while Christian’s is fillet steak. Vicente went for pan-fried breaded fish with chips and fried onions. Our waitress Stefanie also chipped in with her choice being chicken with cheese…Icelandic style. I guess this gives an indication of the variety of our menu. Favourite day of the week? I love Sundays when, in common with many other places these days, we do a carvery. Christian particularly looks forward to Saturdays as this is the day he prepares his steak specials. Finally, and maybe we shouldn’t say this but, we all love Tuesdays because it is our day off. Having said that we always look forward to re-opening on Wednesday morning as we love what we do here. Any interesting tales? I can give you a couple of snippets about ourselves. Christian literally went

from working as a bricklayer to becoming a chef overnight. I have to say that he’s taken to it like a duck to water. As for myself my only real previous experience working in this environment was a short stint in a coffee bar in Reykjavik, Iceland. It happened to be, however, Iceland’s most famous coffee bar, the “Svarta Kaffi”. (The name means ‘black coffee’). Oh and we pride ourselves in keeping our French windows clean, so much so that in our early days a couple of people walked into them thinking they were open. Thankfully nobody was hurt. We stopped short of putting up signs saying “This is a window” but we now put up posters or something similar to make it obvious there’s a window there. The Black Bull Steak Bar & Restaurant is at Torremendo off the CV 951 near San Miguel and you can contact them to book at table on 966 194 194/ 685 770 059. Find out what they have going on, see their menus on their page on the whatson-costablanca.com website.

Ten Tips to Healthy Eating Believe it or not, an effective healthy eating plan can help you lose more weight than even exercise. And the best part is that eating healthy is not all that difficult. You just have to follow a few simple rules to enjoy the varied benefits of health eating.

Naturally sweet vegetables add healthy sweetness to your meals and reduce your cravings for other sweets. Some examples of sweet vegetables are corn, carrots, beets, sweet potatoes or yams, winter squash, and onions. A wide variety of fruit is also vital to a healthy diet. Fruit provides fibre, vitamins and antioxidants. Berries are cancerfighting, apples provide fibre, oranges and mangos offer vitamin C, and so on.

1.) Eat before you feel starved to avoid overeating. As with fluids, if you only drink when you are thirsty then it is already too late. A handy tip is to drink a glass of water before you eat so that you don’t feel as hungry.

7.) Eat more fish. Aim for at least two portions of fish a week, including a portion of oily fish. You can choose from fresh, frozen or canned, but remember that canned and smoked fish can be high in salt.

2.) Take small bites and chew your food properly before taking the next bite. A great tip is to put your eating utensils down between each mouthful so that you don’t rush yourself. This will help you eat slower, allowing your stomach to fill up without overeating.

3.) Eat with your stomach and not with your eyes.

breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and a healthy breakfast ensures a healthy lifestyle. Skipping your breakfast ruins your body's metabolism which can actually result in your body gaining more weight.

8.) Remember that chicken isn't always a healthy choice. Many fast-food chains offer fried breaded chicken sandwiches on white bread that are actually richer in fat and calories than a burger. Grilled chicken is a better option.

6.) Be sure to eat a variety of fruits and 9.) Cut down on saturated fat. Try to cut down on food that is high in saturated fat vegetables with each meal to ensure you and have foods that are rich in unsaturated fat instead, are getting all the vitamins and minerals 4.) Chew your calories, don’t drink them. such as vegetable oils (including sunflower, rapeseed Beverages can add a lot of extra calories to your diet, you need.

Let your body tell you when you are full, not your brain, as it will always want more than is required.

especially soda or carbonated drinks. Even fruit juice is not always the best option, so rather drink more water.

5.) Eat your breakfast as early as you can in the morning. This will give an early kick start to your body's metabolism. But no matter what you do, do not skip

Greens are packed with calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, zinc, vitamins A, C, E and K, and they help strengthen the blood and respiratory systems. Be adventurous with your greens and branch out beyond bright and dark green lettuce — kale, mustard greens, broccoli, Chinese cabbage are just a few of the options.

Next Year….. How much of this year have you wished for what you haven’t currently got? Research has described how those of us are dissatisfied with life in general and certain specific things are much more likely to have higher rates of depression and even die sooner than our happier more fulfilled counterparts. What happens in our head

affects our bodily functions and as the body is really a very complex machine it is easy to understand how if one part malfunctions it can affect the rest of the efficient working of the machine, in this case the human body. Many people are dissatisfied and in some cases very unhappy with their life as it is today but don’t actually know where to

begin to address this. They know that they are unhappy but it stops at that. Why not make this coming year a year for change if that is what you really want. Empower yourself to start to think about making change A good starting point is to write down why you feel unhappy or dissatisfied, what is it that you would like to change. You don’t have to show this to anyone so be totally honest with yourself… When you have done this score from one to ten, ten being the worst against each thing on the list. You can’t tackle everything at once but this way you will identify what is your biggest issue and then write down what needs to happen to bring these changes. It may not be earth moving it can be quite small things but instead of ruminating about them do something to change them. Little steps are sometimes all that is required on the other hand this exercise might identify huge changes that need to happen. Change is scary and many people would rather stay in an

and olive oil), oily fish, avocados, nuts and seeds.

10.) Minimize intake of the three unhealthy whites: sugar, salt and white flour. All these three white products are bad for your health. Make it a point to reduce their intake as much as possible.

unhappy situation than make changes. This is about choice and looking things in the eye and deciding if you want to do anything. If it is a situation or person who makes you unhappy you might decide to share it with them and see where it takes you. Sometimes writing it down is all you need to do because just writing it down can bring relief

and be sufficient to dispel the issue. Next week we are going to begin to think about a very common New Year’s Resolution which is to lose weight as there is lots of help out there to start you on your journey. Low Blood Sugar: Symptoms and Causes Low blood sugar is a serious condition. Find out exactly what it is and discover the symptoms and possible causes. Low blood sugar, often referred to as hypoglycemia, can affect anyone at any age. However it is more common among babies and the elderly. Low blood sugar basically means that you have a low amount of sugar (glucose) in your blood, usually below 60 mg/dL. At a level of 50 mg/dL is thought to affect the functioning of the human brain. This is due to the fact that glucose is the primary source of fuel for the brain. It is also required to fuel the muscles, cells and ensure the correct functioning of hormones, such as insulin, glucagon and epinephrine. Insulin, as well as glucagon are both manufactured in the pancreas. Insulin is responsible for the absorption of glucose into the blood stream, while glucagon breaks down the stored

glucose (glycogen) and releases it into the blood stream. Epinephrine, also known as adrenalin, is manufactured in the adrenal gland and its role is to elevate blood sugar levels, by making the glucose available for the body during stressful periods. When these systems do not work properly, hypoglycemia may occur. Common causes of hypoglycemia include the use of alcohol, missing meals, infections, kidney or liver failure, tumours such as hepatoma, fibrosarcoma and mesothelioma, medication such as beta-blockers or over-medicating with insulin, among others. Symptoms include hunger pangs, anxiety, sweating, rapid heart palpitations, and shaking, seizures, headaches, confusion and difficulty thinking. If you suspect that you have hypoglycemia seek immediate medical attention before the condition worsens.

Spanish home prices up 4.5% year on year in third quarter of 2015, rents also up The details from the housing price index means that prices have now increased for six quarters annually in a row following six years of decline and it is the highest quarterly rise since the last quarter of 2007 when growth was 5.7%, just before the global economic downturn. House prices then started falling in the second quarter of 2008 with a decline of 0.3% and continued to fall until the second quarter of 2014. A breakdown of the figures show that the price of new homes fell by 4.3% and other homes were up by 4.5% while quarter on quarter prices overall increased 0.7% which followed a strong rise of 4.1% in the second quarter of the year. In what is a sign of the universal nature of the recovery in the Spanish property market the figures show a rise in prices in almost every region in the country. Asturias and Extremadura recorded the greatest annual rates of increase, up by 2.6% and 2.4%, to 3.5% and 3.3%, respectively, while the greatest annual fall was in the Basque Country and Valencia, down by 0.9% and 0.6% to 1% and 2.1%, respectively. Quarter on quarter nine regions saw prices rise, seven recorded declines and prices remained stable in the Basque Country. The largest quarterly increase was in the Balearic Islands with growth of 3.1% and Asturias up 1.8%, while the biggest fall was in Navarra with a decline

of 1.1% and Aragón down 1%. Residential rents are also rising and increased year on year in all regions in November, the first time this has happened for eight years. The data from property porta Fotocasa shows this was led by Catalonia with an annual rise of 10.6%, followed by the Balearic Islands up 7.8%, Madrid up 6.3% and La Rioja up 6%. In Castilla-La Mancha average rents increased by 0.7%, Cantabria was up 1%, the Basque

Country up 1.1% and Navarra up 1.3%. Month on month rents increased by 0.5% to €7.02 per square meter per month with 11 regions seeing rises. The Balearic Islands saw a monthly rise of 1.9% and Catalonia up 1.3% while La Rioja, the Canary Islands and Cantabria all saw growth of 0.6%. But average rental prices fell by 1.2% month on month in Galicia, fell by 0.9% in the Basque Country and by 0.8% in Murcia. The data also shows that since the peak of the market in May 2007 when rents were €10.12 per square meter per month rental values have fallen by 30.7% and five regions have seen accumulated declines over 30%. The steepest decline since peak has been in Aragón where rental prices have fallen by 41.6%, followed by Cantabria down 36.1%, Castilla-La Mancha down 35.2%, Valencia down 34.5% and Murcia down 32.3%. The smallest declines from peak are in Castilla y León with an accumulated fall of 13.6%, the Basque Country down 14.9%, Extremadura down 16.9% and Madrid down 17.8%. The Basque Country remains the most expensive region with rental prices at an average of €10.01 per square meter per month, followed by Madrid at €9.71 and Catalonia at €9.70. The most affordable rents are in Extremadura at €4.60 and Castilla-La Mancha at €4.70

Baked Rice - Arroz al Horno This recipe is typical of homecooking in the Marina Alta comarca in Alicante province-although you find slightly different versions all over Levante. It comes from the Reus Torres family who run the Corral del Pato restaurant in an old farmhouse in Gata de Gorgos (Alicante). It's also sometimes called arroz passejat, meaning rice that has gone for a walk--because it was taken to the baker's oven for cooking. Until recently, this was always made with the Bomba rice grown behind Denia, which gave the grains a firmness and much greater texture. Ingredients: 1 lb 2 oz Bomba rice 1/2 cup olive oil 1 lb 6 oz mixed chicken and rabbit joints and lean pork, on the bone and cut into small chunks 1 red pepper 3 ripe tomatoes, 1 grated and 2 halved crossways 7 oz garbanzo beans, soaked for 12 hours in cold water 1 head of garlic Salt Piment贸n Saffron About 1 litret water Preparation: Heat the oil and fry the pieces of meat until they are golden. Add the red pepper,

cut into three or four pieces, and the grated tomato. This may be done ahead of time. Heat the oven to high. Bring the water to boil. In a 2 1/2 litre capacity casserole, make a bottom layer of the Bomba rice mixed with saffron; next put in the meat fried with the tomato; then the garbanzo beans arranged between the pieces of meat. Pour over the boiling water (using slightly less if the dish is not made of earthenware). On the top, put the whole head of garlic in the middle and, around it, the red peppers and the remaining two tomatoes, halved crossways. Check for salt and put the dish in the centre of the oven for 25 minutes. It should simmer slightly and may appear to be dry earlier, but will need the full cooking time. Leave to rest for 15 minutes.

Car of the Week: 2017 BMW i8 Spyder HOW DO you improve on one of the most exciting machines of the decade? It’s the question that has faced engineers from BMW, challenged to improve upon the eco-friendly i8 sports car. Yet now it appears they have come up with the answer: take off the roof and cram in more technology than you’ll find in an Apple Store. The German car maker has confirmed it will show a Spyder version of the i8 at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which takes place next month in Las Vegas. Although the new i8 is technically still at the concept stage, Harald Krüger, the head of BMW, has said the drop-top version of the hybrid sports car will go on sale in the future, with company sources suggesting that it may be as soon as 2017. As a result, we expect the show model to be pretty close to the production version. The standard i8 was the electric-petrol hybrid that proved plug-in cars didn’t have to be anonymouslooking or boring to drive. Little wonder, then, that when it went on sale last year there was a waiting list time of more than 12 months. With its clever hybrid drivetrain, the i8 is very nearly as quick as a Porsche 911 Carrera S — hitting 62mph in 4.4 seconds — but it can also cover 22 miles in electriconly mode. Its official fuel consumption figure is almost 135mpg. BMW first revealed a concept — pictured here, in updated colours — for a roofless i8 at the Beijing motor show in 2012. Plans stalled, though, and now it seems Krüger, who took up the reins in May, has resurrected the project. Aside from having a removable roof and a garish orange colour scheme, one of the main differences between the Spyder and its sibling is that it will be packed with gadgets.

Expect gesture-recognition features — such as the ability to adjust music volume by rotating a finger in the air — and touch-sensitive surfaces, with the prospect of small touchpads on the steering wheel replacing buttons for radio stations or the cruisecontrol system. Other developments include three-dimensional displays that use colour and depth of field to show drivers different information according to importance, such as speed, fuel and battery power

levels. The i8 Spyder is also said to have a vast 21in digital screen, similar to that in the Tesla Model S, displaying stereo, sat nav and other settings. The biggest question mark over the new i8 could be its handling. The standard car was lauded for being a brilliant driver’s machine, with superb body control and balance. Cutting the roof off any vehicle will always affect stability — we’ll have to wait and see if that’s the case with the Spyder.

Will anyone warm to the Volkswagen Budd-e concept car at CES? WITH A name chosen to appeal to Generation Selfie, and electrically powered motors that can zip it along as quickly as a hot hatchback, the new Volkswagen Budd-e concept is a far cry from the original, 1950 Volkswagen Transporter that went on to endear itself to a generation of global nomads, surf bums and families that celebrated flower power over nuclear power. So the obvious question is, will anyone warm to the Budd-e? Revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, the Budd-e previews both a new, funky family car from VW and the next generation platform and components – known as Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB) - that will underpin a range of electric cars from the German car maker. Still reeling from the Dieselgate emissions rigging scandal, and facing the prospect of being sued by America’s Environmental Protection Agency for as much as £14bn, Volkswagen’s top management are powering ahead with the electrification of its cars. The four-seat Budd-e concept car features a pair of electric motors, one beneath the car’s nose and the other in the back, which give it four-wheel drive and a combined power output of 235kW (315bhp). That makes it capable of zipping from 0-62mph in just 6.9 seconds. Thanks to a new generation of

lithium-ion battery, the car is said to be theoretically capable of travelling 331 miles on a single charge. Plugging in to a high-powered, 150kW system would give 80% of a battery charge in 30 minutes. However, the Budd-e’s batteries can also be topped up using a wireless induction process, much like an electric toothbrush, as VW anticipates improvements to the electric car infrastructure and home charging units. The electric powertrain isn’t all that’s being previewed in this CES concept car. It demonstrates how car makers like VW believe that the so-called Internet of

Things will see cars become more connected to peoples’ everyday habits. For example, when synced to the home’s smartfridge, the car could remind the driver on their way home that the bread, milk and cheese are all going off today, and – heaven forbid - there’s no Chardonnay in the wine chiller. VW has developed the technology in partnership with LG, the Korean electronics giant. Songs could be programmed to play at certain points on a pre-planned journey. And when you arrive home, gesture recognition would mean the doors can open themselves. Rear-wheel steering helps in tight parking spots, and 3D digital displays and touch pad sensors on the steering wheel preview features coming to VWs of all shapes and sizes in years to come. Will VW build the Budd-e, or just parts of it? Driving put the question to Dr Volkmar Tanneberger, head of electronic development for VW and responsible for the Budd-e project. "The basic idea is to develop a modular toolkit and take this flat battery into serial production, one motor on the front, one on the rear. This is the MIB electric platform. You will see a car that looks a lot like this, on the MIB platform, reach production. I can’t say exactly when, but 2020 or thereabouts."

Tesla supplied just 208 Model X cars in 2015

The Model X, Tesla’s first new car in three years, was launched to much fanfare in 2015, but the company’s boasting of the “most advanced car yet” may have been a tad premature – just 208 cars were actually delivered in the fourth quarter of 2015, the first full quarter in which it was available to buy. A crossover (combining design cues from SUVs and more traditional cars such as hatchbacks), the Model X was unveiled in 2012, with plans for it to ship in 2013. That date slipped, first to 2014 and then to 2015, before it was finally launched in September of that year. But a more realistic date is perhaps 2016, since Tesla says it had only managed to build 507 of the cars by the end of last year. At the launch, Tesla’s chief executive, Elon Musk, warned that the company was only capable of building five cars a week, and was slowly ramping up production with the aim of a weekly output of “maybe, like, 800 cars a week”. In fact, by

the end of the year, it was producing 238 a week. The major constraints appeared to be related to third-party suppliers of parts such as door seals and seats. In November, the company admitted that it was having such trouble sourcing the seats, which are custom-moulded, that it had decided to stop outsourcing their production, instead manufacturing them in-house. The electric car firm did manage to supply more of its Model S sedan, however, delivering 17,192 of the cars during the quarter, a 48% increase from the quarter before. But the news wasn’t all happy there, either: one of the company’s cars reportedly caught fire and melted to a crisp while connected to a supercharger in Norway. A Tesla spokesperson said that nobody was harmed in the fire and that the company would share its findings after a full investigation had been carried out.

Eight of the best drone photos of 2015 The arrival of the drone ushered in new possibilities for photographers looking to find a new angle. Users of the site Dronestagram have been voting for their favourite images, and here we present a selection of those chosen as being among the best of the year.

Maringa Cathedral, Brazil Image copyright Ricardo Matiello This dramatic picture by Ricardo Matiello shows the spire of Maringa Cathedral in Brazil on a foggy morning.

Camel racing, Dubai, UAE Image copyright Shoyab The annual Al Marmoum Camel Race in Dubai was shot from above by Shoyab.

Lost island, Tahaa, French Polynesia Image copyright Marama This beautiful island image was made by the user Marama Photo Video who said: "We were waiting for sunset, drinking a Hinano, installed in warm water, rain was behind us, a rainbow appeared, this is Tahitian life."

Mont Saint Michel, Normandy, France Image copyright Jeremie Eloy

Early one morning as the water slowly turned Mont Saint Michel in Normandy, France, into an island once more, Jeremie Eloy was on hand to record the moment with his drone camera.

Paracatu Brazil Image copyright Alexandre Salem Alexandre Salem's picture shows a church in Paracatu that was caught in a mudslide in Brazil caused by a mining accident. At least 17 people were killed when the dam burst in the south-eastern state of Minas Gerais, polluting rivers and destroying farmland over a vast area.

Plazuela Sanchez Taboada, Mazatlan, Mexico Image copyright Alejandro Ochoa Alejandro Ochoa caught the moment a cliff diver plunged into the sea from the diving platform in Mazatlan, Mexico. The platform is nearly 50ft (15m) high and the divers perform for tourists during the afternoon.

Christ the Redeemer Image copyright Alexandre Salem Alexandre Salem shot this image on his drone high above the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Salem said: "One of my favourite activities is to take the drone for hiking trips in nature. On this day, after a walk of two hours, I arrived at the feet of the Christ the Redeemer statue. The evening and the beautiful sun beating on the back of the statue created the perfect combination for this photo." Turgoyak, Miass, Russia Image copyright Maksim Tarasov

This picture of a hole drilled into a frozen lake by fishermen in Lake Turgoyak in Russia was taken by Maksim Tarasov.

CD Dolores - who had bagged 46 goals and conceded just 11 in 14 fixtures - were kept at bay by a well organised CD Montesinos team in the first half. Seventh placed CD Montesinos trailed CD Dolores by 12 points going into the fixture, having won seven games under the helm of Roberto, who was serving a one-match ban, and sat behind the dug-out for the game. CD Dolores looked a good team in the opening stages, underlining their lofty spot, with CD Montesinos settling and getting more into the game thereafter. Montesinos' Dario was fouled after 12 minutes, with the visitors offender receiving a yellow card. On 35 minutes Carlos crossed the ball into the CD Dolores penalty area, only for O Rourke to

Two Categories competed for 100 euros prize money." David added: "Unfortunately Derek Beckett - the highest score of 36 points was unable to win anything, as a new member, 3 cards are required, before winning any prize money.” Results: Category 1: 1st Peter Kerr 31 points (on c/b); 2nd Ray Rumble; 3rd

Football y Fútbol Christmas may be over but with the New Year brings the transfer season as clubs dip their hands into their pockets to try and improve their squads or provide cover for injured players. And thus the gossip columns are in full swing as they try and outguess the pub gossip guru and fantasy league managers as to what will be happening in the transfer window.

Romelu Lukaku Starting with the Sun, they say that Everton striker Romelu Lukaku, 22, wants to join Paris St-Germain or Real Madrid in the summer rather than Manchester United and the Express note that Barcelona want Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey, 25, and Everton defender John Stones, 21 while Arsenal are set to spend a combined £52m on Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka, 23, and Paris St-Germain's 20-year-old midfielder Adrien Rabiot. After his interesting and entertaining interview after this team drew with Exeter City on Friday night, the Mirror say that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has grown frustrated with striker Daniel Sturridge's persistent injury problems and is ready to listen to offers for the 26-year-old. Meanwhile, it took an injury time penalty from Wayne Rooney to avoid a lot of blushes from a full strength squad at Old Trafford and apparently Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is among the possible replacements for Louis van Gaal being considered by Manchester United executives. Tottenham are poised to make another bid for West Brom striker Saido Berahino, 22, with a £20m package that includes England winger Andros Townsend, 24 while Lazio rejected a bid of 50m euros (£37.6m) from Manchester United for midfielder Felipe Anderson, 22, in August but have not received another bid from the Red Devils, according to the Italian side's director of sport. Manchester United have rejected an approach from AC Milan to take midfielder Marouane Fellaini on loan and have told the Italian side it would cost £24m to buy the 28year-old in a permanent deal and in what has not pleased too many fans United boss Louis van Gaal does not expect his club to make any signings during the January transfer window. Swansea will offer striker Wilfried Bony, 27, the chance to return to the Liberty Stadium and are also considering a move for Milan's Netherlands midfielder Nigel de Jong, 31. Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski, 27, is considering his future with the German champions. Robert Lewandowski

Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea have all been interested in the Poland international say the Independent. Everton are preparing a £21m bid for Dynamo Kiev winger Andriy Yarmolenko in the hope of capturing the 26-year-old before his value potentially rises after Euro 2016. Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola is already thinking about Manchester City and never enjoyed "true love" with his Bayern players, according to Germany legend Lothar Matthaus. Guardiola has already informed Manchester City he wants Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, 25, and Athletic Bilbao centre-back Aymeric Laporte, 21, as part of his squad at Etihad Stadium. The agent of Manchester City playmaker Yaya Toure says that he fears that the 32-year-old could prove surplus to Guardiola's requirements if he takes charge at the Etihad. Guardiola sold Toure in 2010 when they were at Barcelona together. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hinted 23-year-old Basel midfielder Mohamed Elneny, who is set to complete a move to the Emirates in the next few days, will be the Gunners' only signing during the January transfer window. Sevilla's Poland international midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak, 25, says he is aware of interest from the Gunners. Micah Richards, 27, was separated from furious fans by stewards after Aston Villa's FA Cup draw at League Two Wycombe Wanderers. The Villa captain told supporters: "We are giving our best." Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce wants the Premier League to follow European leagues and introduce a winter break to help the welfare of players. Marko Arnautovic

Tommy Langford photographed with several Baggies players - including Chris Brunt - at the FA Cup tie with Bristol City. Langford fights Lewis Taylor for the vacant Commonwealth title at the Echo Arena in Liverpool next month. Manchester United fan Leanne told 606 her side are the "most boring team in the world" after they scraped a 1-0 win over Sheffield United in the FA Cup third round. Bolton manager Neil Lennon was unhappy with the playing conditions for his side's 1-1 draw against Eastleigh and described the pitch as "like a ploughed field." And finally Doncaster's Richard Chaplow did not just have to think about his team's 2-1 defeat by Stoke as he made his way home. Potters fans serenaded the follically challenged midfielder with: "He looks like my thumb." But Chaplow took the episode in good spirits, tweeting a video of the incident and writing: "When you've just played Stoke and get recognised by their fans on the train after - good to set be fair #awaydays." In a season of unwanted statistics for Manchester United, here's another. They've been outscored by Javier Hernandez and Angel Di Maria. Anthony Martial's secondhalf strike in the 2-1 home defeat by Norwich was their 22nd in 17 Premier League games, a modest record in part down to them having had just seven shots on target in their last four home league games. Stoke striker Marko Arnautovic, 26, wants a weekly wage of more than £100,000 if he is to extend his contract, which expires at the end of next season. The Potters have a wage ceiling of £70,000 a week. The Sunday Mirror is launching a Knight the Heroes of 1966 campaign to have all the survivors of England's triumphant World Cup campaign knighted. Over in the land of social media Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil, 27, features again, this time backing Prince Ali of Jordan in the Fifa presidential election campaign. Former Barcelona and Chelsea striker Samuel Eto'o, 34, has an unusual award to add to his collection. Eto'o, now at Antalyaspor, explained on Twitter: "I'm proud to be awarded the trophy for best transfer in Turkey 2015." Sunderland's 21-year-old goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made his competitive debut for the club in the 3-1 FA Cup defeat by Arsenal. He wrote on Twitter: "The dream has finally come true! Making my debut for @SunderlandAFC is the proudest moment for me and my family! Hard work pays off." After Manchester United's 1-0 victory over Sheffield United courtesy of a penalty deep into injury time, Manchester United's Bastian Schweinsteiger tweeted: "It's always important to fight until the very end!" WBO intercontinental middleweight champion and West Brom fan Tommy Langford took his belt along to be

claimed the only goal for Bayer Leverkusen against Ingoldstadt, his 10th in his last eight league appearances, and 18th in all since moving from Old Trafford for £7.3m four months ago. Rio Ferdinand recently took to Twitter to reiterate his belief that the 27-year-old would have joined the list of the most prolific strikers seen at Old Trafford had he been given an extended run in the side. Di Maria hasn't been quite so productive in front of goal, but nevertheless his double in a 3-0 victory over Caen was the Argentina midfielder's eighth and ninth since he joined Paris St Germain as United took a £14.5m loss in August, 12 months after paying a British record £59.7m for his services. In all, that's 27 goals in 37 combined starts for the pair who were deemed surplus to requirements by Louis van Gaal. As BBC Sport would say: “Add your own punchline.”
