Carnival time in Torrevieja Torrevieja will be celebrating Carnival this week with the two main parades taking place on Sunday 7th and Saturday 13th February. On Sunday 7th February at 4.00pm, the first of two parades gets underway. The Carnival Contest Parade starts from Plaza Mar铆a Asunci贸n, just outside of Mullins Irish Pub, and continues along Calle Ram贸n Gallud, past the Virgin del

Carmen Cultural Centre, with the main focus being just in front of the Town Hall Square and finishing at Calle Patricio P茅rez street. The more flamboyant night carnival takes place the following Saturday 13th February starting at 10.00pm and following the same route.

The parade lasts about 90 minutes and thousands of people line the streets.

Hundreds of kilos of sweets are thrown to the watching crowd and more than 1,000 people from many different school, clubs and associations take part.

The night-time parade, has more of a Brazilian Samnadrome flavour to it, in that it can be a little more suggestive, but it's all down in good humour so get out there and enjoy Torrevieja's most colourful of fiestas.

Crane closes Main Street

At about 10.50am on Saturday morning a large crane, that was moving material for some improvement works to the paving area of Caballero de Rodas, having just anchored at the junction of this road with the Calle San Pablo. The crane apparently exceeded its own maximum lifting power, when one of the straps attached to the 'arm' broke, causing the crane to swivel 180 degrees and causing minor damage on the second floor of the Caballero de Rodas, number two, with breakage around the window frame and breaking glass.

Fortuitously the first floors of this building are offices that were empty and nobody was circulating in the vicinity at the time, which prevented what could have been a tragedy occurring. Almost immediately several patrol cars from the local Police cordoned off the area and blocked traffic. Subsequently, a vehicle from the Fire Department arrived and cleaned up the broken windows and so as to prevent further falling of glass, secured the tow truck.

Although the damage around the street was numerous, no injuries were reported.

Semana Santa Museum in chaos

Work on the Semana Santa Museum is due to begin any day now but new plans and ideas for the use of the building have come under fire from the Brotherhoods for whom the building was built. The JMC accuses the Municipal Government of unilaterally deciding that the Semana Santa Museum will now have 300 m2 less as an exhibition space as originally planned.

The Brotherhoods who will take to streets in their first major carry on March 21st, say they are “shocked by the total lack of dialogue and news in this regard, since all the information that they have received has just been through leaks to media and press releases. With 300 m2 less exposure and two floors of underground parking, it seems that, as in the past, they want to send Christians to the catacombs. " The president of the Board of Mayor Brotherhoods of Torrevieja, Jesus Sanchez Seva, in the press release issued by the local government in the distribution detailing what was to be the new Museum of the Holy Week, explained that the pentapartito have made a unilateral decision that will eliminate about 300 square meters of exhibition area of Torrevieja's brotherhood heritage. According to the Land Registry, the property that is now intended to be the Museum on Calle Formentera has an area of just over 920 m2. "With the two floors we are now being offered we would have 631 m2, almost 300 less than we have now, where we are already fully saturated", said the President. However, two basement floors are offered, but here you cannot place an exhibition, as they are designed for storage and placed eleven meters below street level. Torrevieja Association Afecáncer, is an independent, non-profit association, which aims to help people with cancer and their families by providing the means to improve their quality of life and raise awareness of the importance of prevention. It was founded on March 24th, 2012; its first president being Laura Martínez Boj. Today has over one hundred members and its board is chaired by Maria Luisa Martinez Martinez.

It is one of the most active associations in the service for people with cancer and their families, offering information, support and guidance plus Psychooncology care to patients and families to help them deal with sufferers, bereavement and loss. They also work to provide economic aid to patients at risk of social exclusion and help with employment programs and home help. They also offer a social outreach service and awareness programs and smoking cessation courses. At the moment they are conducting a workshop active relaxation for pain control given by Carmen Pacheco, every Thursday at 7.00 pm, that's open to the public in general, and remains free of charge but it is given in Spanish. During Christmas Afecáncer worked on activities in the Zoa District's on December 23rd and January 4th with merchants of this district to help revitalize trade. Over the two days, traders offered clients chocolate, roulade and special incentives for a small donation with the funds raised allowing Afecáncer to implement a project employment for women with cancer.

The younger ones enjoyed inflatables, face painting and a visit from Santa Claus and the Three Kings. Afecáncer want to thank all the traders in the Zoa District for “your willingness to cooperate with Afecáncer and we give you all our energy for all your future projects to help make them a success.”

The International Cancer Day is on Thursday February 4th, Thursday, when Afecáncer will have a memorial ceremony in the Town Hall Square with the Mayor, the

Councillor for NGOs and also the poet Tony Coslm, who will sign his latest book of poems with all proceeds going to Afecáncer. Torrevieja joins Modernize Plan 7.0 of the Provincial Council of Alicante With the new addition of the City of Salt, there are now 131 municipalities that are part of this project as announced by Councillor Adrian Ballester. As from last week, the municipality of Torrevieja is part of the Moderniza 7.0 Plan of the Provincial Council of Alicante, an incorporation that will to allow the provincial government to implement an efficient electronic administration through various activities including Municipal Web portal, digital signature, stamp body, asset management, licensing agreements, software and local council in the cloud are just some of the services that they can now offer the torrevejense local authority via the Internet.

The incorporation of this Torrevieja program is the result of negotiations carried out previously for the population to offer its residents the opportunity to make various transactions via Internet.

The provincial institution acts as your partner, making available to the workers in this local administration, technical and human tools needed. Ballester specified that "this program has already 131 municipalities of Alicante, of the 141 that make up the province, which have joined

the project of the provincial government that generates more than six million euros in municipalities savings."

The technological support provided by the Computing Service of the Provincial Council of Alicante also includes the development of a Maps portal, which includes tourist and commercial information of the municipalities, as well as mobile application MunicipApp ALC, which is able to connect in real time with the corporate website of municipalities with access to information from any mobile

"Cazuelicas and good wine" This week, from Thursday 4th thru Sunday 7th February, a total of 21 establishments are involved with a bringing you a fun gastronomic route offering a variety of casseroles and good wine. Councillor for Hospitality, Manuela Osuna, President of the Hospitality Association of Torrevieja, Joaquín Guillamo and vocal Martineti Marco, presented the third edition of "The Cazuelica and Wine". Osuna said that: “21 catering establishments have joined this initiative for which each has prepared two casseroles and a wine selected for the occasion. As in previous editions, there is a set price of 2.00€ for the casserole and 1.50€ for wine.”

Among the dishes you will find include the long tradition specialties on offer in the town, like the octopus stew, stew Raja and others in which the main character is the sepia. Do not miss the casseroles with meat, such as oxtail with chickpeas or veal prepared with various sauces. Each restaurant has chosen a wine to accompany the two dishes they have prepared, along with wines with denomination of origin Rioja, Castilla La Mancha, Alicante, Rivera del Duero and Campo de Borja.

Guillamo said that "participants have been asked to ensure the quality and abundance of 'cazuelitas' is varied and different, for whom the taste is satisfied".

The Association is working hard to expand the gastronomic calendar of the entity "incorporating a new event" in

which they hope to have the cooperation of the City. Martineti said that this gastronomic event has been designed from its inception as a way to engage both small and large restaurants, especially for those who are a little smaller because "the association is for all".

The councillor recalled that it is an event "by and for the youth of the city, but can be accessed by all public and it's an opportunity to meet with universities and institutes of the city, who will be presenting their educational offers; degrees and diplomas; plus training centres, businesses and other government agencies. All this to facilitate access to resources and programs that currently exist in both the public and private sectors and with young people as main target."

Moreover, Samper indicated that they remain committed to the youth training courses with two officers with access to official degree information and they will be offering Course Monitor courses, youth education and a course of basic operations in the kitchen at the CDT, a course exclusively for young people from Torrevieja's Youth Guarantee program.

The councillor pointed out that this is a provincial program to improve the employability of young people aged 16 to 29 who do not study or work.

Information is available from the Centre for Information and Youth Animation (CIAJ), as a collaborating centre. They also have sport recruitment and training courses for football referees in cooperation with the delegation to include officials from Orihuela.

As for leisure activities such as new alternative leisure Saturdays, these are presented in collaboration with the local Youth Association in the region, offering alternative leisure among young people through evenings of games, role playing, workshops, tournaments and other activities. The trip to Sierra Nevada is also included for skiing and snowboarding, which takes place from 4th to 6th March, after having to postpone it due to lack of snow in January. On Easter Saturday 26th March they have also scheduled party games, gaming consoles in the Virgin del Carmen Cultural Centre with different tournaments and competitions on different platforms to coincide with student holidays at Easter.

The spring schedule along with a review of the new powers of the Council, after changing the activities that can be performed by the IVAJ office, such as the issuance of all youth cards (Youth Card, international student, Hostelling and others) and regional youth information by the Department, will also be available, once the agreements are approved for this purpose between IVAJ Jove Generalitat and City Council Torrevieja, which at present, according to the Councillor of Youth, is pending.

Los Montesinos to stage 'Carnaval' 2016

By Andrew Atkinson Los Montesinos is preparing for the town's Carnival Party Carnaval Los Montesinos - on Saturday February 6th. The Carnival, staged in the Sacred Heart Plaza, will commence at 5.00pm, where children and adults are invited to enjoy the feast of Carnival 2016, with music, animation and the traditional chocolate milk.

Elsewhere around the town, the 'Ruta Inaugural El Mirador de la Vega' took place on Sunday, January 31st, with a tour designed and created by the members of the Workshop of Employment Vega Baja Tourism

and Leisure II (promoted by Convega). The route path took in the Municipalities of Redován, Callosa de Segura and Cox, linking natural places and points of interest in the Vega Baja region - "The Sierra", "The Cave Ahumada" and "The Castle of Santa Barbara".

Also on Sunday, the Young Montesinera Judit García presented the newly published Novel: "Teach me to Fly", at the Auditorium of Los Montesinos.

The presentation included an animation and talk show, with music by a quartet of Saxophonists, titled: "Youth Music". The Mayor of Los Montesinos Jose Manuel Butron, and Rosa Belen Moran, Councillor for Culture attended.

'A Place in the Sun' shows off local properties

By Andrew Atkinson Los Montesinos, Quesada, Villamartin, Campoamor, Benijofar, Los Altos and Torrevieja have all been featured on TV in the last few weeks - in the midst of an increase in property sales in Spain.

Figures represented nearly 35,000 properties were sold in Spain in November 2015 - an increase of 7.3% from the previous 12 months, with 18 months on-going sales, according to the General Council of Notaries.

Having purchased a property in the 'boom' era of 2004 I can confirm property prices in many areas can be purchased today up to 50% cheaper. However, in recent years, where prices really hit 'rockbottom' with sales being snapped up for as little as 30,000 euros - yes 30,000 euros - those days appear to have ended. A 2 bedroomed, 1 bathroom apartment, with solarium, was sold at auction for 30,000 euros. Also 2 bedroomed properties in the region of 45,000 euros have also been sold on the South Costa Blanca Figures show Apartment sales registered an increase of 6.2% year-onyear; the increase in sales of free price apartments being +8.3%; and sales of second hand apartments +12.2%. In contrast the number of transactions on new build housing declined for the 10th consecutive month, to -18.6%. Figures for family homes in November increased

+11.4% being the ninth consecutive month increase.

Popular TV programmes like 'A Place in the Sun' - who have been filming in Los Montesinos and surrounding areas - has once again lead to interest from ex-pats in buying a bargain property, with reductions of up to 50% remaining in some areas, from that of the 'boom' era, and prior to the crash in circa. 2008.

New mortgage loans increased by 7.3% year-on-year in November, to 25,681 transactions. A moderate increase of 2.4% year-on-year, being the lowest increase in 18 months. The Vega Baja town of Los Montesinos, Alicante, sees prices vary - from 2.5m euros for a 5 bedroomed Villa - to that of a 1 bedroomed apartment, at approximately 40,000 euros. Prices fluctuate, from 1.5m euros, 1 million euros, in the upper echelons; to 165,000-120,000 euros for a 3 bedroomed detached Villa. A 2 bedroomed, 1 bathroom apartment can be purchased for approximately 63,000 euros. *Prices at January 28, 2016. Prices can vary from region to region.

Sir Terry says goodbye Terry Wogan passed away on Sunday. As the BBC wrote about one of their most loved Broadcasters, or as he preferred to be called 'narrowcasters': “His genial manner and Irish blarney made Sir Terry Wogan a much-loved broadcasting institution. He was a master of the live event, whether hosting his chat shows or compering Children in Need. His jocular manner, and flights of whimsy, helped him build an audience of eight million for his radio shows. An easy-going man off air, as well as on, he remained remarkably untouched by fame, fortune or any whiff of scandal.

Michael Terence Wogan was born in Limerick on 3 August 1938, the son of a grocery shop manager. He admitted that he had not really applied himself at school. "I only ever did enough to pass exams," he said. "I never had any capacity for preparing for anything. That's why I'm so lucky to be in a job where I make it up as I go along."

Wogan left school in 1956 and briefly worked in a branch of the Bank of Ireland, close to Dublin's cattle market. Radio lured him away from his ledgers and he got a job as a newsreader and announcer with Irish broadcaster RTE after answering a newspaper advertisement. He spent his first two years working on news and documentaries but then moved across to light entertainment. He did a stint as a radio DJ before being chosen to host Jackpot, a quiz show that proved immensely popular on RTE during the 1960s. However, the show was dropped in 1967 and Wogan approached the BBC to see if they would give him some work.

He made his debut on the Light Programme, now Radio 2, and in 1969 was asked to stand in for Jimmy

Young on the mid-morning show. This led to a regular afternoon slot on Radio 1 which, because of financial restrictions, shared some of its output with Radio 2. By 1972 Radios 1 and 2 had completely split and Wogan took over the breakfast show on Radio 2 which had been presented by John Dunn. He became an immediate hit.

His whimsical style suited an early-morning audience wanting to be woken gently with a bit of banter and easy-listening music.

By this time his name had been linked to the BBC's coverage of the Eurovision Song Contest. He covered the extravaganza for radio in 1971 and would provide three more radio commentaries in the 1970s. But it was for his television coverage, his first was in 1973, that he became most famous. From 1980-2008 he was the indispensable television voice of the contest for millions

of listeners.

His acerbic descriptions of both contestants and hosts, together with his often-expressed irritation at the way groups of countries always voted for each other, chimed with a British audience who have never taken the contest seriously.

One series of What's on Wogan? ran during 1980 and the following year, a one-off show featuring an appearance by Dallas star Larry Hagman helped to raise Wogan's profile even more. Between 1982 and 1992 he hosted Wogan, a chat show that was eventually being broadcast on three evenings a week. At the same time Wogan was hosting the quiz show, Blankety Blank, as well as anchoring the BBC's charity appeal, Children in Need, which was first broadcast in 1980 and which he continued to host after his retirement from regular broadcasting. In 1992 the BBC dropped his chat show for the ill-fated soap, Eldorado. He returned to the Radio 2 breakfast show after an absence of nine years. The show was aimed at an older audience, whose members became known as TOGs, Terry's Old Geezers or Terry's Old Gals.

He made a foray into the recording studio in 1978 recording a version of the Floral Dance which he sang over a backing by a brass band. He also published a number of books. He was given a knighthood in 2005.

Because Ireland was not a republic when he was born, he held British as well as Irish citizenship and so was entitled to the honorific, Sir. Wogan was typically selfdeprecating about his own success. Spain based football stars of the future offered chance at Dublin Academy Trials

By Andrew Atkinson Mallorca Football Academy is staging its first Football trials in Dublin, Ireland, under the watchful eye of former player Michael Keane, Recruitment manager Ireland for the Mallorca Football Academy, Spain. "The Dublin Trials are open to everyone - we have all different nationalities at the Academy - of which there are 23 players," Michael told The CoastRider. "The trials will have training and being involved in various matches, with each player having as much equal game time, and an opportunity to make big impressions - not only to the Mallorca Academy - but various club scouts too!," said Michael.

I first met Michael when he played for my home City club Preston North End having turned down the chance to join Spurs and Manchester City - to move The Lilywhites. Michael joined Preston North End, aged 16, when signed by ex-Preston, Everton, Manchester United and Real Sociedad manager David Moyes. "I love Preston - my heart and pride was wearing the shirt. I had trials at Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City, among other clubs," Michael told The CoastRider: "I chose Preston - ahead of Manchester City and Spurs - good offers from two big clubs. I got on well with David Moyes, and he said the offers Spurs and City had made, would not be matched at Preston," said Michael.

"David Moyes was determined and committed - that rubbed off on me.

Manchester City and Spurs could go out buy players - spend money. Preston looked to their youth set-up. And I was told, if I do well, I would get opportunities," said Michael. Michael Keane has been informed by The CoastRider of the plethora of young talented players of different nationalities on the Costa Blanca South. "All interested applicants can apply through me. All players must be 16 years or older. Places are limited and subject to availability," said former Republic of Ireland u20 and u21 star Michael.

"There will be scouts from various professional clubs in attendance at the Dublin trials," said Michael, who played for Preston, Grimsby (loan), Hull City, and

Rotherham, during 2000-07.

"I have been in contact with a Peterborough United Football Club Scout and he is going to be at the trials too," said Michael. "If the Scouts in attendance are interested in a player at the trials, then the sky could well be the limit," said Dublin born Michael.

"There will also be the Mallorca Academy information table set up on the day of trials - and all catalogues and full information will be available on request at the venue," said Michael. "This is the opportunity to be scouted - if you feel you have what it takes - and want to take it to the next level," said Michael, who ended his career at League of Ireland club St Patrick's Athletic in 2008.

By Andrew Atkinson Los Montesinos Virgin del Pilar public school students staged a composition of 'Paz' - to mark the World Peace Day 2016 organised by teachers and pupils. World Day of Peace (World Peace Day) is a feast day of the Roman Catholic Church dedicated to peace, held on the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. The Message of His Holiness Pope Francis for the Celebration of the XLIX World Day of Peace 2016 was to overcome indifference and win peace. "God is not indifferent! God cares about mankind!

God does not abandon us!" said Pope Francis, speaking from The Vatican.

"At the beginning of the New Year, I would like to share not only this profound conviction but also my cordial good wishes for prosperity, peace and the fulfilment of the hopes of every man and every woman, every family, people and nation throughout the world, including all Heads of State and Government and all religious leaders. We continue to trust that 2016 will see us all firmly and confidently engaged, on different levels, in the pursuit of justice and peace," said Pope Francis.

"Peace is both God’s gift and a human achievement.

As a gift of God, it is entrusted to all men and women, who are called to attain it. Sadly, war and terrorism, accompanied by kidnapping, ethnic or religious persecution and the misuse of power, marked the past year from start to finish," said Pope Francis.

The Pope added: "In many parts of the world, these have become so common as to constitute a real 'third world war fought piecemeal'. Yet some events of the year now ending inspire me, in looking ahead to the New Year, to encourage everyone not to lose hope in our human ability to conquer evil and to combat resignation and indifference. They demonstrate our capacity to show solidarity and to rise above self-interest, apathy and indifference in the face of critical situations. I would

like to make a threefold appeal to the leaders of nations: to refrain from drawing other peoples into conflicts or wars. Locally, hundreds of spectators from the Vega Baja, Alicante town gathered to witness the Los Montesinos Virgin del Pilar public school student’s composition of 'Paz' to mark the World Peace Day 2016.

Mercadona slams 'cheap import' smear MAJOR supermarket chain Mercadona has hotly denied rumours it has been replacing home-grown and nationallyproduced groceries with poor-quality versions imported at a fraction of the price.

“It could be you have read online, or heard through social networks, that Mercadona is removing Spanish produce in favour of foreign goods, or that Spanish groceries are being taken off the shelves – but this information is totally false,” a statement by the chain's PR department on its web page says.

The chain, which started out life in the province of Valencia as a family-run corner shop and has now made its founder Juan Roig the third-richest man in Spain, has denounced a smear campaign which is urging customers to shop elsewhere, accusing Mercadona of legal, but borderline unethical practices.

To counter these claims, the supermarket has given a full breakdown of who makes its various own-brand goods, such as the household cleaning produce line Bosque Verde, cosmetic label Deliplus, and food name Hacendado.

It is not true that the pumpkins come from Panamá, potatoes from Israel, olive oil from Morocco, oranges from

Argentina or sunflower seeds from China, insists the corporation, which buys the lion's share or even 100% of groceries produced by its partner firms.

To obtain fresh produce, Mercadona works with 12,000 fishermen, 6,000 farms and 4,000 livestock breeders.

It also does major trade with 120 suppliers, spread throughout 220 factories across the country.

“Our olive oil comes from a producer in the province of Sevilla, which can be vouched for by the independent qualitycontrol agency Det Norske Veritas,” Mercadona assures.

“We stock oil from traditional producers in the regions of Andalucía, Catalunya, Murcia, Valencia, Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha and Extremadura.”

Spanish Princess Cristina loses bid to avoid fraud trial

Spain’s Princess Cristina has lost an appeal to have criminal charges against her dropped so that she may not face trial.

A court in Madrid released a report on Friday saying that a panel of judges rejected Cristina’s argument that she should not be tried.

Princess Cristina’s lawyers had previously argued that as public prosecutors refused to press charges against her, the counts against her should be dropped.

The court has confirmed that the princess will face trial for tax fraud in a corruption trial that also ensnared her husband and 16 others.

The case revolves around the shady business dealings conducted by a Palma-based charitable organization, the Noos Institute – which is chaired by Cristina’s husband – Inaki Urdangarin,

from 2004 to 2006.

If found guilty, the 50-year-old sister of Spain’s King Felipe VI could face a maximum of eight years in jail.

The Spanish princess has repeatedly denied knowing anything about the alleged embezzlement scam.

The case was launched in 2010 by a judge investigating corruption allegations among authorities on Balearic Islands. It has emerged highly symbolic of perceived corruption among Spain’s elites, including the royal family.

Last year, Felipe stripped Cristina and her husband of their titles as the duke and the duchess of Palma de Mallorca following their indictment.

Princess Cristina remains the sixth in line to the Spanish throne and is the first member of the royal family to go on trial.

She now lives in Switzerland.

The Valencia region is an orange-growing hotspot, producing more of the fruit than it can sell or even harvest – but by August, the crop cycle is well and truly over until the autumn and the few left hanging on the trees are of very poor quality.

This is the only time Mercadona imports oranges – when they cannot get any in Spain – and they come from Argentina.

“And we only ship in potatoes from Israel when they do not grow at home, which is from November to April,” the company clarifies.

As for the so-called borderline unethical practices in terms of workers' rights which Mercadona has been accused of at the same time, the firm highlights its reputation as one of the fairest and most modern, forward-

thinking employers in Spain.

Whilst other national firms were losing profits hand over fist during the worst years of the recession, Mercadona was one of those which stayed in the black and actually thrived.

Some of its branches in major cities have a free crèche for staff's children, over 90% of workers are on permanent, fulltime job contracts – the only exceptions being back-up temps in high season – and the company's minimum wage for a 40-hour week is €1,200 a month, a figure it assures is only paid to new and inexperienced staff who will be guaranteed pay rises throughout their career.

Mercadona was also one of the first main supermarket chains to offer home delivery and online shopping, as well as a store card which can be paid off in arrears, and customer service training.

Its standards improved still further during the financial crisis – if a queue reaches more than three or four people at the checkout, a staff member will be called immediately to open another till.

Spanish state sentenced to pay Roberto Heras €724,000

In 2005, Heras initially gained the dubious distinction of being the first Grand Tour winner to be stripped of his title following his reported positive test.

In 2012, he later recovered his Vuelta a España title – which had been awarded, in his place, to runner-up Denis Menchov – after Spain’s Supreme Court, the country’s highest judicial authority, confirmed a previous legal ruling from 2011 that there had been irregularities in the testing procedure, which annulled the two-year ban and penalty.

Now Heras has won another legal battle, after a Spanish court has awarded him €724,000 in compensation for loss of earnings. After being fired by Liberty Seguros, his team of the time, and his subsequent suspension in 2005, Heras was unable to continue his career.

Enriqe Bastida, the head of Spain’s anti-doping agency, AEPSAD, strongly expressed his dissatisfaction with the sentence to Spanish newspaper MARCA, describing it as “unthinkable, in this day and age. With all due respect to the

courts, doping is not something for legal debate, it’s an ethical issue.”

During his career as a top climber, Heras won the Vuelta a España a recordbreaking four times, in 2000, 2003, 2004 and 2005, racing with Kelme, US Postal and Liberty Seguros. Now 41, he races in non-professional MTB events.

The latest sentence will now almost certainly be subject to an appeal, local media reported on Saturday, meaning a definitive outcome will not be reached until around 2018, more than 12 years after his positive test.

But the seemingly interminable time lapse in reaching such verdicts is anything but new for Spanish doping cases. On Saturday, MARCA said that the long-awaited final verdict on the appeal for the Operación Puerto anti-doping investigation will not now be published in January, as had been widely claimed, because the three judges overseeing the case have been unable to reach an agreement on what that verdict should be.

Spanish policeman 'suspended for refusing to pay at brothel'

A Spanish policeman has been suspended for five days after refusing to pay a brothel he was trying to visit with colleagues and a member of the country’s national intelligence agency, it has been reported.

According to Spanish newspaper El Pais, all of the men were off-duty and not wearing uniform when they visited the establishment named 'Supermodels' in Noain, northern Spain, in January 2012.

A court document read: “The sergeant, who showed signs of having consumed an excessive amount of alcohol, tried to enter without paying, which was prevented by the doorman of the premises.”

When asked to pay an entry fee by the

brothel's bouncer, the policeman reportedly produced his badge, said he was on a police operation, and threatened to arrest him, saying: “I know where you live and if I want to I can put you behind bars this very night.”

After repeatedly refusing to pay, the group was confronted by the brothel’s owner, who eventually called the police.

Spanish police were recently told that they cannot visit strip clubs while on duty and in uniform after a ruling by the country’s Supreme Court. The decision was handed down following an appeal by a police officer in Toledo who was disciplined for visiting a strip club during a shift. He was suspended without pay for six months.

Spanish recovery gathers more momentum Spanish GDP grew 0.8% in the final quarter of 2015, the same rate as the previous three months, according to a preliminary estimate released by the National Institute of Statistics on Friday. The figure suggests that the economy grew by 3.2% in 2015, more evidence that Spain’s recentlybeleaguered economy is finally gathering pace. A day earlier, jobs data pointed to a record drop in unemployment in 2015, which ended with 525,100 more people in work than 12 months earlier. However, this still represents an unemployment rate of over 20%, one of the highest in Europe.

Friday’s ‘flash’ estimate did not break down the components of GDP but “economists see consumers as the main driver of the recovery, benefiting from improved financing conditions, faster job creation and renewed confidence,” Bloomberg reported.

The European Commission forecasts that the Spanish economy will grow by 2.7% in 2016, the seventh fastest rate in the euro area but first among its major economies and well above the estimate of 1.8% for the single-currency zone as a whole.

The news comes at a time of political deadlock in Madrid, where it remains unclear which party or parties will form a government following December’s inconclusive election.

Mariano Rajoy, leader of the centreright People’s Party and acting prime minister, described Thursday’s unemployment figures as “the best in history”. He has pinned his hopes of remaining in government on the strength of Spain’s recovery.

Mr. Rajoy, who has rejected calls to try to form a minority government and wants instead to forge a grand coalition, blamed Socialist Party leader Pedro Sánchez for Spain’s political stalemate. “I am not an obstacle,” he told reporters.

“The obstacle here is Pedro Sánchez who wants to become prime minister. I call on him to make a decision.”

From Torrevieja to Circus Vegas for Spain's star horsewoman Emma!

By Andrew Atkinson Torrevieja has been home to star stunt-defying horsewoman Emma J. Tytherleigh for the last decade - now Emma is to star in Circus Vegas in 2016.

“Being in Ireland and performing for one of Europe's largest Circuses - Circus Vegas – is a childhood dream,” Emma Exclusively told The CoastRider. “Circus Vegas is a traditional Circus - with many talented international artists. We will be in Ireland until the spring. Then we will be performing right across the UK,” said Emma.

“I have performed in some very large shows in the past - but Circus has always been a childhood dream of mine - and to have the chance to work alongside and train with someone as talented as Guido Leidelmeyer is just an opportunity I could not turn down,” said Emma. Guido Louis Leidelmeyer, from Holland, has been based in the UK since 1994 and is one of Europe’s most respected Trick Riders.

“When I am not performing I travel throughout the country as an Equine Behaviourist, teaching people how to use body language to communicate with their horses, and help them with certain

issues,” Guido, formerly coach of the Trick Riding team for the Royal Cavalry in Oman for 10 years. At the age of 16 Guido began performing for various Circuses around Europe. 18 years later he worked for ‘Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show’ in Disney, Paris. Guido returned to the Britain to start his own production 'Rock'in Horse' - an action packed live stunt show - that was held in large venues across the UK. With a life-long passion for horses Emma became an Equestrian Performer at the age of 16. “I gained experience in many different disciplines,” said Emma, whose speciality acts include Trick Riding and Liberty. Emma’s talent has taken her around the world, beginning her career Trick Riding for various shows in Great Britain: “In 2005 I moved to Spain to perform for a well-known Spanish restaurant in Torrevieja,” said Emma. “I then went on to spend three years touring Canada and the USA - with the largest Equestrian Touring show of its kind - ‘CAVALIA’,” said Emma.

“In 2012 I returned to Spain, to perform at various events across the country,” said Emma.

2015 was a busy year for Emma and her team, having relocated to Turkey for 4 months, to train horses and ponies for speciality acts for the wellknown Equestrian spectacular 'Lord of the Horses'.

“I spent six weeks working behind the scenes, training stunt horses for an American movie production, returning to Spain late July,” said Emma, who

hosted her horse and Flamenco themed show 'Fiesta Horse'.

Brooke Saxon will be taking Emma’s place in ‘Fiesta Horse’ in Spain, alongside Antonio Piqueras, performing throughout the Costa Blanca – including summer shows at Casa La Pedrera, Torremendo.

“Hopefully this year's Spanish Show will have some surprise guest riders. At the moment I am writing a script for it,” said Emma. Talking about her horse Romero, Emma said: “Romero will arrive in Ireland soon. Romero is with Brooke at ‘Finca Jemma’, Algorfa at the moment, but hopefully we will be reunited in late February.” Emma’s famous Jack Russell is touring in Circus Vegas: “Rodeo Jack is on tour with me right now,” said Emma.

Being a superstar is not all glamour and smiles - behind the scenes - as Emma and Guido Louis know only too well. After a week of rehearsals, dealing with stormy weather and relocating the stables, Guido said: "The tented stables were close to flying away. “We had to repair a rip that the strong wind had caused. And

Emma and myself had to live on fast food for a while - because of training sessions."

Emma, who was based at a Spanish Stud Farm in Dolores, and Guido, from The Hague, have undergone long hours of preparation - before the Circus Vegas opening show in Dublin.

Guido said: "We came to the realisation that we're so happy to be Equestrians. Just look at us - and the 'Glamour'. There's no business like show business!" The Circus Vegas show opened their 2016 spectacular at Swords, the National Show Centre, in Dublin, Ireland.

During February 3-9 The Circus Vegas are appearing at Wexford Racecourse in Ireland. “I will return to Spain – eventually – as Spain will always be home for me,” said Emma, whose website is: horseshow.es

Back Stage with Mister X Who are you and what do you do?

I'm Mister X - a professional magician, who does general magic, illusion manipulations and illusion with large equipment.

How did you start in the business?

I started as a circus variety artist in variety shows venues around Bulgaria, since I graduated at the Unique Circus School in Moscow, Russia.

What would you be doing if you were not an entertainer?

For me the stage is everything and I love to perform on it! I love my job as a magician! Anyway, I'm also a civil engineer, so I do have an alternative job.

As an entertainer who has been your biggest influence?

I was mostly influenced by the son of the legendary Bulgarian magician Miti, called Julian. I got attracted by his tricks and illusions and that determined my future life.

Do you ever get nervous or have you suffered stage fright?

When I started, I was concerned about my first appearances on stage about how the audience would react, and worried that if someone in the audience is illusionist with more experience than me and what would he say. But with the time I was seeing the audience's reaction and become more confident. I love the stage and the audience and have no worries now whatsoever. Even when I run a new magic trick I'm not worried as I know I have practised it many times and it has been refined in order to make sure that everything would run smooth.

What was your best moment?

For me, the best time is after every applause of the audience. This is the criteria for each artist.

What has been your worst moment?

At the first Balkan Festival of Magicians I had to open the festival. When I got announced, I appeared on stage

and the wrong music was playing which threw me for a moment, I looked at the show director and I nodded to the audience, and invited my assistant on stage. My correct music started with my performance. The audience didn’t notice that. Later on I’ve found that the director had had informed the sound master about the problem which was solved within seconds.

What’s the best piece of advice you have received or would give someone starting out in the business?

I've received a lot of advice from colleagues and show directors. I'd share them with younger colleagues – the magic tricks have to be performed in front of an audience only after one is 100% sure and confident that the performance would run smooth. The hands have to do the magic trick instinctively, otherwise the audience would notice that the magician is not prepared.

Any little anecdotes or interesting stories?

A. I was working in a variety complex with a live orchestra, playing with real cigarettes and throwing them on the floor. One cigarette’s spark fell on the magical towels on my table, so they got on fire. When I turned around I saw the guitarist trying to extinguish the burning towels stamping them with his feet.

Whats On Costa Blanca caught up with the staff at Mexi Mundo International Restaurant this week. See what meal deals they each day of the week and their menus on their page on the website at whatson-costablanca.com Sharing a brandy with the lovely staff at Mexi Mundo Mexican Cantina and International Restaurant on Urbanisation Altos del Limonar this week was something special. This lovely venue can be seen off the CV905 on the right travelling towards Torrevieja. The roof top solarium has been turned into a mini golf course offering adults and kids the chance to do something more than just ‘eating out’. They offer more than famous Mexican dishes, they also offer an International Menu that has mouthwatering appealing with dishes such as Plank Steak which is a rib eye steak served

on a wooden oak plank and served with mash potato and béarnaise sauce. Great for those who have people in their parties that prefer more traditional food as well as Mexican food lovers.

Every week on Thursday evenings they offer a Tex-Mex buffet with as much as you can eat for the price of €7.50 per person and every night they offer a three course Menu del Noche including wine and beer for €9.50.

As you arrive on the terrace it really does feel like a little piece of Mexico in Spain – perfect on those balmy summer evenings. Inside is very spacious and the tables are beautifully set.

Mexican food is renowned for its freshness and this is true of Mexi Mundo and there are some real treats to be had; Tacos, Quesadilla, Nachos, Enchiladas, Burritos, BBQ rack of ribs and a Mexican steak.

There can’t be too many places where you can go and enjoy good food and also enjoy having a few drinks before and maybe afterwards as well, up on the solarium playing 18 holes of mini golf with outstanding views across the mountains. The course is well designed and certain to make the evening a night

out to remember.

Ten Tips for a Perfect Smile

1.) Visit your dentist every six to 12 months to keep your mouth free of plaque build-up. It's also a good idea to tell him/her what medication you're taking, as some can cause bad breath.

2.) Quit smoking. It's not only hazardous to your health and those around you, but to your teeth as well.

Smoking turns your teeth yellow by leaving sticky tar deposits which can also cause brown stains.

3.) Drink less coffee, tea and red wine. These drinks only add to the discoloration of your teeth.

4.) Watch how much garlic and spicy food you eat — but beware also of less obvious food offenders, like meat, dairy, onion and sugar. Keep a food log to identify what affects your breath.

5.) Brush your teeth and tongue twice a day. The best times to brush are after you've had breakfast in the morning and just before you go to bed.

6.) Floss once a day, preferably in the evenings.

Flossing helps to remove plaque build-up between the teeth and can also help to prevent under the surface

stains. Flossing also helps to prevent decay between the teeth — a common place for it to form.

7.) Use a fluoride mouthwash with antiseptic ingredients and a minty flavour to help mask odour problems.

8.) Choose toothpaste that suits your needs. If you're a fan of organic, there are even organic toothpastes on the market.

9.) A white smile does wonders for your complexion and your self-esteem.

Ask your dentist about a whitening treatment. While this process is very expensive, the costs may seem minimal when your smile is putting a hamper on your quality of life. The professional system takes about one hour and is generally done at your dentist's office. Alternatively, try an at-home kit, available from healthcare stores.

Glycemic Index Diet

Every time you pick up a magazine or read a newspaper you're bound to see a bunch of ads or even articles praising a new diet or a "miracle way" to lose weight. The Glycemic Index is not one of these. It's not a fly by night diet scam that promises results and leaves you with nothing but false hope. The Glycemic Index is about measuring the quality, not quantity of carbohydrates and ranking them according to how quickly they raise your blood sugar levels.

Blood sugar (glucose) level is the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood. For the sake of our health, blood-glucose levels need to remain within certain levels. The body regulates these blood sugar levels using two mechanisms: hunger and insulin.

The website http://www.carbsinformation.com explains: • When blood-glucose levels fall, the brain causes us to feel hungry. Result? We eat food that is converted into glucose and our blood sugar levels rise. If we

don't eat and blood-glucose levels fall too low, we trigger the condition known as hypoglycaemia.

• When our blood-glucose levels rise, the brain tells our pancreas to release insulin. Result? The insulin helps to disperse the glucose and our blood sugar levels fall. Without insulin to regulate a rise in blood-glucose, the amount of sugar in our bloodstream can become toxic, triggering the condition known as hyperglycaemia.

Carbohydrates, which include foods such as fruit, vegetables, starches, grains and cereals etc., have an effect on the body's blood glucose levels. When carbohydrates are digested, they release glucose into the system, providing energy. When you eat carbohydrates that rank high up on the Glycemic Index, they release too much energy into the system too quickly, commonly called an "energy spike". This spike is also followed

New Audi Q2 heads brand's SUV boom Audi is set to place its shiny new Q2 badge on a radically styled SUV in time for March’s Geneva Motor Show. As the smallest SUV in the brand’s line-up, the newcomer – revealed in our exclusive images – will be aimed at a younger audience than Audi has ever previously considered.

The Q2 is based on the MQB platform that underpins the A3. Entry-level models will get front-wheel drive as standard, with top-spec cars using quattro allwheel drive. It’ll be available only as a five-door, and will be significantly shorter than the Q3. A three-door Q2 was considered, but sources suggest it’s since been dropped.

Due on sale in the summer, the car will be the first product from Audi design boss Marc Lichte, who came from VW in late 2013 to replace Wolfgang Egger.

Lichte announced his arrival with the stunning prologue concept in 2014. He’s

been relishing the chance to deliver a radical production car after criticism of the conservative Q7 and A4.

The Q2’s youth orientation has allowed the stylists to wriggle free of the brand’s usual constraints. The model’s most distinctive feature will be a huge chamfered cutout along its waistline on both doors, a forward-stretching cabin and large rear shoulders.

Audi’s also taken lessons from its MINIrivalling A1 in allowing everything from interior to roof colour to be personalised – and even aluminium or carbon fibre for the C-pillars.

Original design prototypes carried an egg-crate pattern inside the single-frame grille, rather than Audi’s traditional horizontal bars. But sources suggest conservatism may have crept back in and seen its face revert to type.

DeLoreans to come back to the future and be built again

The DeLorean sports car famed for its starring role in the Back to the Future movies is set to go back into production, 33 years after the last example was built.

The rights to the DeLorean Motor Company name are now owned by a Texas-based company that has been selling refurbished examples of the stainless steel-bodied two-seater since 1995. However, thanks to a change in US laws which means cars no longer have to satisfy modern safety regulations, as long as fewer than 325 are made each year, it will now be able to build new DeLoreans as well.

Stephen Wynne, CEO of the firm, told American radio station KPRC: "It’s a game-changer for us. It means we're back as a car company again."

"There's no reason to change the appearance of the car," he continued. "As we go into the program, we'll decide what areas do need to be freshened up.”

Around 2,800 parts make up a DeLorean, and the new DeLorean Motor Company owns more than 99 per cent of the remaining stock that came out of the original factory, along with the original technical drawings.

It hopes to have the first new DeLorean ready by 2017, and is aiming for a price of less than $100,000.

Today a classic DeLorean usually costs between £25,000 and £35,000, depending on condition, although righthand-drive examples are rare and can go for more.

The original DeLorean Motor Company was founded by John Z DeLorean, a former engineer and executive at the giant US car maker General Motors. However, production problems and delays meant the car arrived to market with an underpowered engine and almost a decade later than originally planned.

Then in 1982, DeLorean was charged with drugs trafficking, and while he was eventually acquitted on the grounds of entrapment, both he and his car were finished as credible forces in the industry.

Far from the planned 30,000 DeLoreans per year rolling out of the purpose-built factory in Dunmurry, Northern Ireland – which was paid for by the British tax payer – just 9,200 were made in total, between 1981 and 1983.

Audis, and will deliver eclectic trims and materials. A senior source told us: “We tried to characterise the Q2 as an urban street feature, not just a car. The customer can build the character of their own cars.”

There’ll be more hard surfacing than is usual for Audi, but only because research suggests buyers in this new sector will be less considerate about how they use their cars. A source said: “We want to capture a particularly young clientele. The Q2 is very different from SUVs such as the Q7.

It’s a bolder design, and everything’s accentuated more than you’d normally expect from us.”

The Q2 won’t necessarily become a technical leader for the brand, as it’ll carry over a lot of existing mechanical and technical components. It will take a step forward in connectivity, though.

While there are no plans for SQ2 or RS

Q2 variants yet, standard models will use four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines.

That would give Audi the choice to deliver the 1.0, 1.4 and 2.0-litre petrol turbos, as well as a range of 1.6 and 2.0 TDI diesels. There’s no talk of a hybrid yet, although that seems inevitable at a later date.

The Q2 will sit above upcoming small SUVs from inside the VW Group, such as the VW Cross up! and uniquely bodied, Polo-based T-Cross, which will also debut in Geneva.

Lotus 3-Eleven gives you LaFerrari performance for fraction of the money

Lotus stands for light, clever, affordable sports cars, right? Well, it also stands for the new 3-Eleven – which is definitely light and clever, but only affordable if you’ve got £82,500 burning a hole in your pocket.

What you get for your money is the fastest Lotus ever. Which is fast.

Porsche 918, McLaren P1 and LaFerrari fast, actually. Which casts the word ‘affordable’ in a whole new light, as there’s metal there costing more than 1000% more than the 3-Eleven.

Is it really that fast? Well, it’s available in Road and Race spec. The latter bumps the ticket to £116,500, admittedly – but that’s still peanuts compared to the 918 et al. And thus armed, you can rocket from 0-60 in 2.9 seconds.

Given an uninterrupted run at the Nürburgring, Lotus says you’d be out and back in less than seven minutes, too.

Credit for this goes to a mid-mounted 3.5-litre V6, built by Toyota and extensively worked up by Lotus to snort out 404bhp (Road) and 453bhp (Race).

The former is put down through a sixspeed manual box, while the latter goes through a sequential unit. Not

surprisingly, a limited-slip rear diff is standard across the range.

Gearing differences between the two boxes mean that despite having less power, the Road model has a higher top speed of 180mph. At 174, though, the Race version is unlikely to put you to sleep.

Road and Race versions alike are based on a spaceframe body with an aluminium structure and ultralightweight composite panels. Hung on this are independent double wishbones controlled by Ohlins shocks and anti-roll bars which are adjustable at the front.

The cabin is predictably focused, with things like a passenger’s seat appearing on the options list. Only on the Road model, though – in Race trim, you’re on your own.

In the words of Lotus boss Jean-Marc Gales, the 3-Eleven is ‘an uncompromised manifestation of the Lotus idiom.’

To everyone else, a planned production run of 311 vehicles is likely to appear just a touch contrived. On this particular car, however, that’s probably quite easy to forgive.

BMW i Vision Future Interaction concept loses its doors

Remember the days when BMW’s Z1 roadster looked amazingly space-age?

Well, here’s the i Vision Future Interaction.

Admittedly, about the only thing they’ve got in common is the no-doors look from sideways on. But whereas the Z1’s disappeared down into its bodywork, this new concept simply doesn’t have any.

That’s probably just to give you a better view of all the cool stuff inside.

The latest in a line of i8-based concepts, the i Vision Future Interaction showcases BMW’s latest advances on various fronts.

These include autonomous driving, supported by a next-gen head-up display and 3D digital dash delivering instant information about the car’s surroundings – including nearby and oncoming vehicles. This gives the driver more time

to react when situations develop which may require an intervention, or indeed when the car’s being driven rather than piloting itself.

On that subject, while it’s normal now to see cars with selectable drive modes you won’t have come across a selector quite like this concept’s. The available modes are Pure, for maximum enjoyment; Assist, for the quickest journey time; and Auto – in which mode the car takes over and drives itself.

While it’s doing so, you can enjoy the rest of its tech features – which include video calling, gesture control and wi-fi access via BMW’s Open Mobility Cloud, a kind of virtual butler that aims to make sense of your entire life on one single panoramic dashboard. Think of it as a Filofax (or ’smartphone’, as they’re called now) on four wheels.

The Battle for the Spanish Classics

By David Hudson The clip clop of horses hoofs with the jingle of the bells from the harness signalled the arrival of a horse and carriage in our lane in Desamparados. Sitting in the light weight modern carriage was the Grandfather, Father and two grandchildren who said buenos as we waved to them. It got me thinking that in this day of a throw away sociality people still want to save some historic memories and I bet that those children will always remember these days and talk about it to their children.

This is a time of the year that you look back as well as forward on what is happening! So it got me thinking how far the Spanish Classic scene has changed in such a short time and about the battle that I was involved in to save the Spanish Classics or as the Spanish say popular historic vehicles and to get the popular classics being accepted. My little SEAT 600 is 45 years old and has done over 110,000 kms on the original engine which I have driven over 80,000 kms in Spain and Portugal. Before 1995 historic vehicles were over 30 years old, based on the German status and was for the elite and rich. The battle to begin to save the classics was when on 14th July the King signed the parliament bill that protected historic vehicles of 25 years and older, a compromised between the German and English law. This salvo was to give status to the large number of common vehicles that completes the history of the time.

When I brought the sad little 600 from Fausto in 1990 it was to serve me well as a form of transport in and around Torrevieja in our holidays. During the 90s Angie and I tried to form a 600 club in Torrevieja by putting

printed cards under the windscreens of a large number of 600s was still being driven around Torrevieja in those days but to no avail. Then the second salvo of the battle was fired when Volkswagen brought the SEAT Company. The first time I knew about it was when I called into the SEAT dealer for a part only to be told that the German Company wanted nothing to do with the Spanish side of SEAT and could not supply any parts. So it was trawling the scrap yards for cars because even though I told them that it would be more profitable to break down into parts I still had to climb around the yards. Only a handful of parts shops were around Spain in those days and sometimes it meant ordering from Santander. Now the final salvo was fired when a group of aficionados brought up the stock of available parts from SEAT and the battle began with 600 clubs being formed starting with Barcelona, Madrid and Elche.

My involvement began in December 2002 when I came out of the Orihuela tax office and met Manolo and after he found out that I had a 600 he invited me to a meeting on the 9th January 2003 where I joined 13 Spaniards to form a classic club one of only 18 in Spain.

Now there are over 100 clubs and in this area from the Orihuela Club there is nearly 20 Spanish speaking Clubs, 10 English speaking Clubs from micro cars to specialised model clubs and 8 motorcycle clubs. We decided to include all classic vehicles of two and four wheels because it was obvious that a base was needed to encourage and help all classics to stay on the road.

The problems in those early days was because of the elitist reputation we had problems getting the media and public interested. The President Venancio and myself as VP worked hard to get publicity Venancio dealing with the Spanish media and I concentrated on the Scandinavian, German and English papers, TV and Radio. The 600s was to bring in young couples and families which helped to break the elite reputation.

The SEAT 600 was more than an icon, in the 1970s the newspaper “El Pais” wrote that the 600 brought democracy to Spain not President Suerez. This was because in the 50s and 60s the ordinary people was able to freely explore Spain for the first time and exchange ideas that formed the bases of democracy.

What car company had to close the order books two years after its launch of a model to cope with producing the 600?

In those early days there were very little organised

classic events. I remember that we made an agreement with Elche, Murcia and Denia that we would help and support each other’s event. The big problem in those days was information because web sites and emails were not used, the Spanish preferred telephone or post.

Members from clubs as far as Valladolid, Burgos, Madrid, Seville and Barcelona used to travel to this area sometimes leaving at 4.00am which showed the commitment in those early days. I would travel up to 600 kms on a Sunday. Those days there were two organised events that included an Exhibition of classic vehicles, a fun event, a parade of vehicles around the local area and a meal.

The Encuentro was opened to invited clubs and the Concentration which is open to all classic vehicles. Both could be regional or national. These could cost from 1000€ to 12,000€ to put on. I have been involved in twelve Encuentros one which resulted in my forming the first English speaking Classic Club. I was also involved in organising the first National Concentration in Orihuela so I have first-hand experience of the hard work involved in organisation and getting sponsorship and publicity.

The Spanish gave me the sense of adventure and that there is nowhere that it cannot go. To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the SEAT 600 Angie and I took a letter and a large present from the Mayor of Torrevieja to the Mayor of Madrid to mark the commitment of the magdalenas

to holiday in Torrevieja. Local people in Madrid told me that they would not drive a 600 in the Madrid traffic without being in a convey and with a police escort.

The battle has not finished because of the uncertain political future of Spain with inexperienced new parties in control we have seen what may happen. Already city centres has been closed to traffic, some areas have proposed a supplement tax of 85€ on vehicles over 20 years or have banned classic vehicles. All this in the argument that it will reduce contamination but years ago in Oxford the same socialist type of party did this by only allowing buses to drive in the city centre. Within five years Oxford was the most contaminated city in Europe due to the diesel particles sitting about two stories high and at Carfax you could climb three stories and see the effect for yourself. By the time this is understood the classic scene may be badly effected and the unique freedom that the Spanish now enjoy may be lost. Unlike in England which follows the feudal system where all land is private unless it is designated public whereas in Spain under the Neapolitan system all land is public unless marked private giving total freedom to explore. CD Torrevieja continue to look up Three new signings and another point in the bag concluded an enterprising week for the Blues and Whites this week. With 20 points from 24, the team have gone from the brink of the relegation zone to possible Play Off contenders, as both their form and the strength of the squad continues to improve. Sunday's morning kick off ended UD Alzira 1:1 CD Torrevieja. It was another of those games of two very different halves, in that in the first period Torre were not at all comfortable. Too many choices will be given to Alzira that, except in rare and isolated phases, dominated largely the midfield.

However a lack of concentration from a corner gave the hosts a goal, breaking an unbeaten 534 minutes without conceding.

The second half saw a remarkable improvement of Torrevieja with the defence holding strong and after scoring an early equaliser through Higon in the 49th minute, they continued to dominate but could not find the net a second time and thus had to settle for a point.

Torre are now eight games without a loss and go into next Sunday's February 7th game against Villarreal C, full

of confidence. Kick off next Sunday is at noon, due to Carnival being the same day, at the Vicente Garcia Stadium.

With the second half of the season now underway, for a complete change, instead of losing quality players after the Christmas break, the team have picked up three of quality. Midfielder Pablo Redondo Martinez "Pablo Redondo" is a player who has been working out for a couple of weeks with the team to recover from an injury that had kept him away from the game for several months.

Pablo Redondo is a versatile player and can play on either flank, as a midfielder and even pivot player who has great quality and ball control, along with a long and extensive experience in professional football. His professional career began in the Mestalla followed by spells in the first Division at Albacete and Getafe CF and also serving with Gimnastic, Tarragona, Xerez CD, Hercules CF. His last club was Eldense CD where he played in 2nd Division B last season 2014-2015.

Another new signing last week was Chuoe who provides the team with more quality in attack.

Chuoe is a versatile player who can play on both wings and even as a front man as he did with his last club Novelda CF, where he has been playing in group VI of the 3rd Division and has been a key player until the noveldense club decided to dispense with his services.

In Novelda CF he started all 11 games and assisted on 2 goals, one of them against Torrevieja in La Magdalena.

Chuoe's career has mainly been spent in the 2nd

Division B, where he has played continuously since the 2003-2011 season for teams like Valencia B, La Villajoyosa and Benidorm, later signing for La Nucia in 3rd Division in the season 2011- 2012 moving to CD Eldense where in the 2013-2014 season he helped them rise to 2nd B Division by contributing 11 goals in the 2014-2015.

Another striker has joined the club in the shape of Jose Antonio Prieto Hernández "Prieto" from the AD Ceuta X Andaluz Group 3rd Division. Prieto is an established centre forward with great technical quality.

He was the top scorer of his team with 12 goals in 24 matches, with 21 of them as a starter. His statistics speak for themselves as he’s been top scorer twice in his division, the first one with Almeria B scoring 27 goals and the second with the Nijar region where he scored 23 goals, also noting that he had experience in 2nd Division B teams like CP Ejido, San Roque de Lepe, AD Almería B and Ceuta. With most of the teams has played for he has averaged more than 15 goals a season.

Dario shines as Monte defeat high flying Fulgencio

Ahead of the game Montesinos were hit with the news that key players Galindo and Carlos have been side-lined through injury. Galindo, who suffered a double-break of his left wrist in the game against CD Benijofar, is seeing a specialist this week and winger/forward Carlos has sustained knee ligament damage and could be ruled out for the rest of the season. “We are short of players, following the longterm injuries to Galindo and Carlos. We will have to see if Carlos is out for the rest of the season, which is a blow,”

As we sent the CoastRider to bed, Transfer deadline day and all the last minute gossip and deals were coming to an end. The papers jumped in with some wild predictions and this morning the national UK papers and TV will have all the last minute deals clarified. The Mirror noted that Tottenham and Stoke have joined Newcastle in hoping to sign West Brom's 22-year-old striker Saido Berahino on transfer deadline day but Newcastle and Stoke have both had £20m-plus bids rejected as Albion stand firm said the Mail. Diego Costa, 27, will not be leaving Chelsea after the Blues rejected a late approach from Atletico Madrid to resign their former striker but one forward who could leave Stamford Bridge on deadline day, however, is Loic Remy.

The France international, 29, is a target for Leicester and Watford.

Aston Villa have failed with a bid for 29-year-old former Swansea striker Michu, who plays for Spanish club Langreo.
