St. Patrick's Day in Cabo Roig

Cabo Roig was turned Green once again last Thursday, for Spain’s largest St, Patrick’s day parade. Around 8,000 people packed the streets, which although was slightly down on previous years, this could possibly be put down in part to the parade also clashing with market day. But no matter, as those that did attend were treated to a day of music, wit, comedy, marching and entertainment, along with the opportunity to enjoy a swift pint in the beautiful Costa Blanca sunshine. As 5.00pm rolled around. Cabo Roig was awash in green white and gold, to ensure that this St. Patrick’s Day event was the greenest place in Spain. The Parade featured more than twenty floats with Irish dancers, Hip Hop dancers, Disney Characters, Stilt Walkers, Fire

jugglers, classic cars, Harley Davidson motorbikes and lots more, all led by St. Patrick himself with the new Pope, or at least someone who bore an uncanny resemblance, bringing up the rear and blessing the crowd with his own personal brand of holy water. The team from Viva TV were also on hand to produce a short news shot for Irish TV while TKO provided the music and entertainment before and after the main parade. The organisers wished to pass on a special word of thanks to all the fundraisers, for without them this parade would not take place and to all the businesses in Cabo Roig, who helped to fund the parade and to the Orihuela Council and other local entities for their backing and support in continuing the success of the event. The music and entertainment all started about 3.00pm although some of the local pubs and restaurants had been busy since early morning. The parade started at 5.00pm at the back of the strip at Aldeas de Aguamarina, continued up as far as the

medical centre and down the front of the strip led by St Patrick, closely followed by former members of the Irish armed services. To clear the route, more than 30 motorcyclists, adorned in Irish colours paved the way, followed by a selection of classic and custom cars from Club Torrevieja Classics and Specialists Cars. There were fewer cars this year than in previous years due to it being market day and local services could not guarantee being able to clear the roads and have enough parking for all those who wanted to parade, but the organisers noted that over the next three years the parade will fall on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and they have some big plans for these 'party' days. The organisers also wanted give out a huge word of thanks to the Orihuela Town Hall and Policia Local for all their help and support in making this year’s St. Patrick’s Day parade possibly the best parade outside of Ireland and the USA. More photos of the event can be found in our special three page coverage on Pages 6, 7 and 8, as the CoastRider bring you the best coverage of St. Patrick's Day, 2016.

13 foreign students die in Tarragona coach crash A trip from Barcelona to Valencia Fallas ended in the worst possible way for the 13 foreign students who died on Sunday morning in a bus accident on the AP-7 motorway in Freginals (Tarragona). The accident, which also left 44 injured - nine of them seriously, occurred minutes before six o'clock, when the driver "swerved" and crossed the median of the highway and overturned, colliding with another vehicle coming in the opposite direction. "Human error" is the cause of the accident, according to the Generalitat and the Government. This ranks among one of the most serious accidents since 2000 in Spain. The ill-fated bus was part of an expedition of five vehicles from Autocares Alejandro, a company in Mollet del Vallès (Barcelona). They had been hired by several Catalan universities to cover a round trip journey from Barcelona to Valencia. Pompeu Fabra Universities, Polytechnic, Autonomous University of Barcelona and had scheduled a lightning visit to the Fallas aimed at foreign students studying in the Erasmus program in the Catalan city. At four in the morning they departed from Valencia and after two hours' drive at kilometre 333, they suffered the serious accident. The incident took place in a long straight section that leads to a slight curve to the right. The bus crashed into the outer fence and, after a sharp swerve the driver, lost control and went over the median. A car travelling south collided head on against the back of the bus, seriously injuring the two occupants along with the 44 other bus passengers, three of whom are in critical condition. Sixteen were unhurt. Among these the driver who tested negative in tests of alcohol and drugs. All fatalities are women, as confirmed by the Department of Interior of the early afternoon. The young students were mostly foreigners from Peru, Bulgaria, Poland, Ireland, Holland, Belgium,

Palestine, Japan, Ukraine, Czech Republic, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Italy, Hungary, Germany, Sweden, Turkey, Greece, Finland, Norway and Switzerland were the countries of origin confirmed during the afternoon by the Directorate General of Civil Protection of the Generalitat. There were also two passengers of Spanish nationality. The identification of victims lasted for hours. Seventeen coroners travelled to Tortosa. Two specialists in forensic dentistry were mobilized to facilitate the recognition of bodies, some of them badly damaged as a result of the violence of the impact. Authorities declined to give any information about the deceased until completing the identification tasks. The ill-fated bus was part of a convoy of five vehicles. It was the last of the group. Identifying the victims was especially difficult because many students had changed their coach on the return trip to meet with other friends. Nobody knew exactly who was in each of the coaches.

The group had left Barcelona on Saturday at 6:15am bound for Valencia. They spent all day in the Fallas until they left again heading to the Catalan capital about four in the morning. From the outset the researchers pointed to a possible "human error" as the cause of the accident, as the vehicle was only three years old and all papers and reviews were in order. Shortly after the accident, the Hotel Corona Tortosa became the local focal point. Travellers were distributed in meeting rooms on the ground floor while psychological assistance teams treated the young people who had not been physically injured. There, in July 2009, the same hotel served as the base command centre during the fire of Horta de Sant Joan in which five firefighters died. The Government also organised a service centre in the Barcelona airport to welcome and inform relatives of the deceased students coming from various countries. Upon arrival, they were taken to Tortosa to collaborate in the work of identifying victims or contact the injured. Messages of condolence were sent by King Philip VI who called the Catalan president, Carles Puigdemont, who declared two days of mourning and called off the trip that had been planned to Paris. Also the president of the Generalitat Valencia, Ximo Puig, contacted Puigdemont. The flags of the University of Barcelona, where most of those killed studied, have been flying at half-mast since the early hours of Sunday mourning. The mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, said the city is "shocked" by the incident. Carles Puigdemont, and the rector of the University of Barcelona (UB) DĂdac Ramirez, today will lead an act of five minutes of silence in front of the historic university building along with the mayor of Barcelona.

The president of Volkswagen-Audi in Spain, Francisco Perez Botello, visits Grupo Rubio MOVI

Last week the president of Volkswagen-Audi in Spain, Francisco Perez Botello, took time out to visit the facilities Rubio Group Mobile. Last week in the CoastRider we reported that the torrevejense company had recently been distinguished with the Merchant of the Year Award 2016. Perez Botello said that the Group Rubio Mobile, 'is highly valued', because among other things, their market share is above the national average and set an example in customer satisfaction service level, especially with the strong foreign community in Torrevieja. So the value according to Perez Botello said, could not be more satisfactory. On the recovery of the VW sector after the emissions fiasco which cost the company billions, Francisco Perez stressed that in the last two years they are taking a path along a very strong recovery period and it is expected that the current year will be better than 2015, but he noted, it will depend a little on the constitution of the new government, but he expects very good growth in the sector. Perez didn't contemplate any decline in the car market for at least the next two years, and scenarios they are working on will depend heavily on how the political situation is resolved in Spain.

Perez Botello said what the manufacturers want is stability in government, and stability and consistency in economic policies. If all that occurs, we will have strong growth for a sector that is fundamental to the Spanish economy. And if not, we will have to settle for more moderate growth rates. Perez Botello noted that “some doubts are being felt, as a result of the December 20th elections still not being finished, thus clearing the political horizon in Spain. There is an industrial policy that is committed to the industrial development of Spain, which is the best recipe that you can have for any possible future crises. Countries with strong industries are able to overcome the crisis much better and faster and Spain has a very powerful automotive industry that ranks as the 8th largest producer of automobiles in the world, and 2nd in Europe. Spain is also number one when it comes to commercial vehicles in Europe and we are an industrial power in the car sector but there is a need for stability to remain and continue growing the sector that represents 10% of GDP and 20% of exports in Spain. So we trust that in the end common sense prevails and the situation stabilizes.”

Fernando Alonso says he is thankful to be alive Fernando Alonso has admitted he is thankful to be alive after walking away from a 200mph crash that left his obliterated McLaren scattered across the circuit and brought a halt to the Australian Grand Prix - just a year after he was involved in another major smash. Alonso's right wheel clipped Esteban Gutierrez's Haas going into turn three of the 18th lap today and the impact sent the Spaniard's McLaren hurtling into a barrier, smashing it to pieces before it flipped, rolled and flew end-over-end into another barrier. Miraculously the two-time world champion, who survived another horror crash just a year ago, emerged from the wreckage and walked gingerly over to Gutierrez, where the pair embraced. Touchingly, speaking after the incident 34-year-old Alonso said he jumped quickly out of the wreckage because he knew his mother was watching at home and he did not want to worry her. In February 2015 Alonso was so badly concussed following a crash in Spain while testing for the 2015 Australian Grand Prix he forgot the past 20 years and thought it was still 1995. During that incident he crashed at 150mph during pre-season testing and was rushed to hospital where he spent three days under observation. Asked by doctors who he was, what sort of work he was in and what he wanted to be in the future, he replied: 'I'm Fernando, I drive go karts and I want to be a Formula 1 driver.' It was claimed he thought he was just 13 years old. Following today's crash the 34-year-old spoke to media shortly after Nico Rosberg won the race for Mercedes, and said: 'I'm okay, I'm trying to put everything in place again, 'It was a scary crash. I'm lucky to be here and happy to be here, and thankful to be here - especially to the (governing body) FIA and all the safety, thanks to that probably I'm alive.

'We lost the power unit and the car because there was a lot of damage, but I'm super happy to be talking.' ‘You are not exactly aware where you are,’ added Alonso, 34, who missed this race last year after a crash in pre-season testing. ‘You are just flying and then you see the sky, the ground, the sky, the ground, and you don’t know. When I stopped I saw a little space to get out of the car and I got out quickly. Then I didn’t know where I was because I was so far from the track. ‘I had travelled a lot when I was flying. Apart from the pain in my knees from bouncing a lot in the cockpit, I should be okay. I’ll tell you in the morning. ‘You are thankful that you are alive and have no big injuries. But the second thought is the frustration of not finishing the race.’ Race control said Alonso's contact with Gutierrez would be investigated but the Spaniard said neither driver was to blame. 'We were racing, I kept in the slip-stream as late as I could and at the last moment I tried to move. 'It's tough, you can only see the rear wing, you don't have the full view of the track. And same for him, he's defending and can't see what the other guy is doing. So we are both happy.' Alonso revealed he was fully alert throughout the incident and said his thoughts immediately turned to

family back home. He said: 'I was flying, so you see the sky then the ground, then the sky, then the ground. 'You want to stop but it doesn't stop. It keeps going and going and going. It was quite scary, but at the last moment the car stopped and I had a little space to go out and I said, 'I will go out quickly because my mother will be watching at home.' Gutierrez added: 'It was a big relief to see that he was fine. It was a very scary moment and not very pleasant to see how his car ended up. 'We were both a bit shocked from the crash. We came together and spoke a little bit, but we're all good most importantly.' Both Alonso and Gutierrez were taken to the medical centre for assessment following the incident. The accident triggered a red flag, bringing the race to a halt for around 15 minutes. Speaking to the BBC Alonso added he was shocked at his luck which left him able to walk away uninjured. He said: 'For the safety of those cars is why I am alive - and the safety wall. I think it was a racing thing and sometimes we forget we are going 300km an hour.' Not long after Alonso's crash Kimi Räikkönen was also forced to end his race early as he made a pit stop in Lap 23 to deal with a mechanical issue that caused a fire in his Ferrari. As he radioed over to his Ferrari team that there seemed to be an issue with the car, smoke was seen coming out of the engine cover. Pulling into the pit stop Marshals rushed to Räikkönen's aid, using fire extinguishers to put out the fire. Despite the unexpected sequence of events Mercedes had a one-two finish as Rosberg finished moments before his team-mate Lewis Hamilton. Not far behind was Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and Australia's Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo who finished fourth.

Botched Fresco Restoration China destroys unlawful Saved a Spanish Town Spanish citrus cargo

Hey, remember “Beast Christ”? Of course you do. The 1930 fresco of Jesus called “Ecce Homo” that a local art restorer in Borja, Spain, uh, “fixed” in 2012 (pictured above) went on to receive worldwide ridicule via the Internet, thanks to its soulless eyes, anime-style nose and furry chinstrap from hell. The creator of this mesmerizing icon, Cecilia Giménez, 85, was “humiliated” when the news broke of her less-thanfaithful restoration of this original artwork by the Spanish painter Elías García Martínez. But then something funny happened. Over the next three years, 160,000 tourists from around the world came to the Sanctuary of Mercy church in Borja to see this curiosity in person, and most of them bought lunch, a souvenir, a hotel room or a variety of other goods and/or

services. So in what can only be described as a roundabout miracle, Beast Christ saved Borja—a town with a population of roughly 5,000—from the devastating recession that the rest of Spain has suffered over the last seven years. Borja Mayor Eduardo Arilla clearly said to himself “let’s roll with this,” and now he’s opened a centre with the hopes of giving “the painting a new impetus,” as he said. In other words, come see Beast Christ, tourists. So go see this abomination in person and learn more about its legendary Internet virality. The new facility “documents the restoration,” and canvases are also provided, in case you want to try to make an even better version of ye old Beast Christ. And yes, there are T-shirts for sale.

The destruction of an illegal citrus shipment from Spain by the Chinese plant health authorities is threatening to sour Spain’s burgeoning fruit trade with China before it gets off the ground. Spanish diplomats in Beijing confirmed on Thursday that a 20-tonne consignment of lemons and oranges destroyed by the Chinese authorities this week did not comply with export regulations. The shipment is believed to have come from Alicante. Speaking to Antena 3, the exporter responsible admitted they did not posses the necessary paperwork but claimed their customer in China “insisted we ship it anyway”. The consignment was buried on quicklime in order to prevent the risk of infestation. Spain is permitted to export citrus to

China provided it meets the necessary import requirements. Although the protocol has been in place since 2007, shipments did not get underway until 2014. Since then, exports have grown rapidly, tripling in 2015 to €1m and expected to grow further this year. Spain is currently negotiating import protocols for table grapes and stonefruit with the Chinese authorities and fears that talks could be derailed if more irregular consignments are discovered. “The Spanish sector has an interest in pursuing fraudulent activity,” said Samuel Juárez, Spain’s agricultural advisor in China, adding that while it was important that a proper investigation should be carried out, there should be no repercussions as the events of this week proved that the controls are effective.

Two Spanish tech companies try to attract the masses

After a long development period, BriskBard is now available for everyone. BriskBard: 10 Apps in One is made by a Single Developer Zaragoza, Spain. Salvador Diaz Fau, an independent Windows developer, has released BriskBard, an all-in-one Windows program to carry out the most common tasks in the Internet with only one app. According to the latest statistical reports released by the AIMC in Spain, Eurostat, the Office for National Statistics in the UK or the Pew Research Center about Internet activities, the most common tasks are related to email, web browsing and media playing. Many of those tasks require several programs that need to be installed independently and updated regularly in order to be safe on the Internet. BriskBard simplifies all those tasks integrating in one single program a web browser, an email client, a media player, a news aggregator, instant messaging, a file transfer client, a newsgroups reader, a contact manager and several web developer tools. Safety, privacy and open standards are three of the main factors in the development of BriskBard. Just to name a couple of its features, erasing all the browsing data can be done with two clicks and the message viewer uses a completely new engine to display its contents safely. For more information about BriskBard or to download a trial version visit https://www.briskbard.com Bonop.com had its official launch this month as an innovative and unique platform to enable content

creators to receive revenue aside from ad banners. With an ever increasing number of people using ad-blockers, revenue streams for content creators, like bloggers and website owners, are decreasing year on year. “Many people don’t know that their favourite website or YouTube channel has relatively no funding,” according to the founders of Bonop.com. “In fact, on YouTube, on average, video providers get only $2 per 1,000 views. We

wanted to create a platform to establish a better revenue channel for all the hardworking website owners, bloggers, and videographers out there.” With a team of technology gurus from Holland and Spain, Bonop’s headquarters are currently based in Marbella. The Bonop.com team brings over 14 years of website development experience and expertise to the table. After working on the official platform and functionality for over a year, the site officially went live this February. “We’ve noticed revenue through ad banners and affiliate links drastically going down with technological developments such as ad-blockers in recent years, Many people don’t trust these banners anymore because they can bring computer viruses and because of privacy concerns. If we want our favourite blogs and YouTube channels to stay afloat, a new way to send them revenue had to be created. “We want supporters of their favourite content creators to use our simple revenue transmitting platform, designed to be quick, easy, and effective, Bonop is a user-friendly website. Think about it, what if every 100th visitor to a particular website donated only $1? It would make an incredible difference in the funding of our favourite sites.” Bonop.com is now officially up and running for the world to utilize. The website can be accessed in English, German and Dutch, with Spanish coming soon. Share their mission goal with your friends, family, and co-workers. Transmit Bonop’s message and ensure your favourite content creators are able to keep doing what they love.

Back Stage with Abba Dabba Doo! Who are you and what do you do? We are called Abba Dabba Doo! We are a duo made up of Karen Noble and Michelle Miles. It is an Abba Tribute With a Twist! The first half of the show is a Tribute to the Swedish Pop Legends with costumes and all their best known hits from Super Trouper to Dancing Queen. The Second Half is a mix of party songs with Flintstone Costumes and a few surprises. The show can be tailored according to your event or bar and we positively encourage the audience to come along in fancy dress. How did you start in the business? I have only ever been semi-professional as a singer and although I have performed for many years including a whole summer season in Ibiza, it has only ever really been a hobby. I was a Civil Servant before “retiring” to Spain. What would you be doing if you were not an entertainer? Well my husband and I own 3 other businesses between us including a Bar/Restaurant in Puerto de Mazarron, so we would probably find time to sleep if I wasn´t being Frida (From Abba) & Betty Rubble! As an entertainer who has been your biggest influence? Without doubt, Karen! I never dreamed of being in an Abba Tribute but she kept on at me to do it and its great fun. I love it so what can I say! Do you ever get nervous or have you suffered stage fright? Every time! But I don´t think that is necessarily a bad thing. It stops you from getting complacent. What was your best moment? Seeing Karen´s face when I turned up at one of her gigs to surprise her dressed as Frida from Abba….At this point I hadn´t agreed to do the Abba show, so to say she was surprised was an understatement. Miss Noble was speechless for once! Ha Ha.

And then when we did do the Abba Tribute, I was in awe of Karen - she has succeeded in nearly every musical genre you can think of! She has won countless musical awards as an Opera Singer and been a Principle for major Opera Companies. She has had No 1 hits in Europe in Contemporary music. Karen is widely considered the No1 Dusty impersonator in the world, she also appeared as Dusty at the London Palladium. Karen has also worked with the REAL Frank Sinatra, Liza Minelli, and Sammy Davis Junior in Monte Carlo… .And now me!! Ha ha What has been your worst moment? A wardrobe malfunction that I´d rather not remember….. What’s the best piece of advice you have received or would give someone starting out in the business? I think it’s the same advice as you would give to anyone in any type of business. “Fail To Prepare, Prepare to Fail” Any little anecdotes or interesting stories? I´m from Stoke on Trent and my claim to fame is that my sister used to date Robbie Williams! He was only about 16 at the time and I remember one of her friends telling him how he would never make it as a singer! Mmm think someone might be eating their words now!

AFTER HOURS – INTERESTING TALES For several months now we have been running the “After Hours” interview featuring bars and restaurants which are on the whatson-costablanca.com website. The final question in the interview is always ‘Any interesting tales?’ This week we feature some of the interesting, amusing and - sometimes bizarre - stories we received. Bar/Restaurant in Lo Crispin that hosted a Russian wedding: “The wedding party all went outside for a traditional Russian toast which involved smashing all the glasses against the wall at the end (fortunately they brought their own). A tradition I did not know about is that both bride and groom take a bite out of a loaf of bread and the one that takes the largest bite will be head of the family. If I remember rightly the bride won!” Bar in San Luis: “We are normally busy but one cold dark weekday night recently there was just me and one male regular customer in the bar for ages. Eventually I said: ‘enough of this, let’s have a party, just the two of

us.’ We turned the music up loud and danced wildly on the terrace. It was just for fun but before we knew it we had a bar full of people. Funny thing is on that evening it wasn’t just us empty there didn’t appear to be anybody about at all…and then suddenly there they all were.” Bar/Restaurant in Quesada: “A thing that made me laugh the most happened a while ago but still to this day makes me smile... a couple came into the bar and asked to eat in the restaurant. John (my barman) replied yes of course and they could take any table except for the table of six. The couple then asked which was the table for six. John replied that…er… that would be the table with the six chairs round it.... well I rolled up and still to this day it makes me chuckle.... sooo funny .......” Restaurant in Altos del Limonar: “One very busy evening a meal had been placed on the bar ready to be delivered to a customer and one of the waitresses for a reason she has never been able to explain decided it was

leftovers and threw the contents of the plate into the bin. We were searching high and low for this missing meal while the poor lady waiting for it was becoming more and more irate. It was embarrassing at the time but very funny looking back.” Bar/Restaurant in El Chaparral: “There was one bizarre event. We had a French gentleman and his wife who racked up quite a ‘tab’ one afternoon. When it was time to settle up he announced that he had no money and

would have to go to a cashpoint. We suggested his wife stayed with us while he went to one but he refused to leave his wife as a deposit so left us his passport, wallet and car keys and off they went. We never saw them again! Their car disappeared shortly afterwards, so they must have had spare keys, but no sign of them. We handed in their property to the police but that was the last we ever heard. We’ve still got their bill, just in case.”

Iyengar Yoga

Iyengar Yoga, named after and developed by B. K. S. Iyengar, is a form of Hatha Yoga that has an emphasis on detail, precision and alignment in the performance of posture (asana) and breath control (pranayama). The development of strength, mobility and stability is gained through the asanas. B.K.S. Iyengar has systematised over 200 classical yoga poses and 14 different types of Pranayama (with variations of many of them) ranging from the basic to advanced. This helps ensure that students’ progress gradually by moving from simple poses to more complex ones and develop their mind, body and spirit through a step-by-step approach. Iyengar Yoga often makes use of props, such as belts, blocks, and blankets, as aids in performing asanas(postures). The props enable students to perform the asanas correctly, minimising the risk of injury or strain, and making the postures accessible to both young and old. Iyengar Yoga is firmly based on the traditional eight limbs of yoga as expounded by Patanjali Focus Iyengar Yoga is a form of Hatha Yoga in which there is a focus on the structural alignment of the physical body through the development of asanas. Through the practice of a system of asanas, it aims to unite the body,

mind and spirit for health and well-being. The discipline is considered by its practitioners to be a powerful tool to relieve the stresses of modern-day life, in turn helping to promote total physical and spiritual well-being. It can be said that Iyengar differs from the other styles of yoga by three key elements: technique, sequence and timing. Technique refers to the precision of the body alignment and the performance of pranayama. Sequence the sequences in which asanas and breathing exercises are practiced. Following the specific sequence is important in achieving the desired result, because only the combination of certain poses and breathing techniques can ensure the expected positive effect. Timing is the third key element which defines the time spent in each pose or pranayama. Iyengar Yoga is characterized by great attention to detail and precise focus on body alignment.

Iyengar pioneered the use of "props" such as cushions, benches, blocks, straps and sand bags, which function as aids allowing beginners to experience asanas more easily and fully than might otherwise be possible without several years of practice. Props also allow elderly, injured, tired or ill students to enjoy the benefits of many asanas via fully "supported" methods requiring less muscular effort. Unlike more experiential approaches where students are encouraged to independently "find their way" to the asanas by imitating the teacher, an Iyengar Yoga class is highly verbal and precise, with misalignments and errors actively corrected. Iyengar teachers complete at least two years of rigorous training for the introductory certificate. They may complete subsequent intermediate levels and senior levels of certification, potentially entailing a decade or more of training.

Six Health Benefits of Eating Oatmeal Eating a bowl of oatmeal each morning is the perfect way to start your day off right. This article will explain the six benefits of eating oatmeal and ways to make it taste delicious. First off, the oatmeal discussed here is not the instant kind that comes in the different flavours — these are full of sugar. The real stuff is the plain oat flakes from Quaker Oats or a similar brand. The benefits of oatmeal are due to the fact that it's made from oats and oats are a good source of both soluble and insoluble fibre. According to the American Cancer Society: 1. Insoluble fibre’s cancerfighting properties are due to the fact that it attacks certain bile acids, reducing their toxicity. 2. Soluble fibre may reduce LDL cholesterol without lowering HDL cholesterol. LDL is bad; HDL is good. 3. Soluble fibre slows down

Oatmeal has a pretty bland taste, which makes it hard for the average person to consume every morning. Here are ways you can make it taste better. 1. Make the oatmeal with milk instead of water. This will also add calcium and more protein. 2. Add Stevia powder to the oatmeal. It will naturally sweeten up the taste without adding sugar. 3. Stir in your favourite flavoured protein powder to it after it's been cooked. This gives

the digestion of starch. This may be beneficial to diabetics because, when you slow down the digestion of starch, you avoid the sharp rises in your blood sugar level that usually occur following a meal. 4. It has been found that those who eat more oats are less likely to develop heart disease, a disease that is currently widespread in the United States.

5. The phytochemicals in oat may also have cancer-fighting properties. 6. Oats are a good source of many nutrients including vitamin E, zinc, selenium, copper, iron, manganese and magnesium. Oats are also a good source of protein. The difference between insoluble and soluble fibre, besides the foods that they come from, is what they do in your body. Insoluble fibre’s main role is that it makes stools heavier and speeds their passage through the gut, relieving constipation. Soluble fibre breaks down as it passes through the digestive tract, forming a gel that traps some substances related to high cholesterol, thus reducing the absorption of cholesterol into the bloodstream.

the oatmeal a pretty good taste plus it adds protein. Combine this with using milk and you'll have a meal that is high in fibre, calcium and protein! 4. Add fruit such as blueberries to the oatmeal. You should aim to eat roughly 1 cooked cup of oatmeal each morning for optimal health benefits. And play around with the above preparation suggestions until you find a taste that you fall in love with. Your heart and body will thank you for it!

The Health Benefits of Eyebright

Euphrasia (eyebright) is a genus of about 450 species of herbaceous flowering plants in the family Orobanchaceae, with a cosmopolitan distribution. They are semi-parasitic on grasses. The common name eyebright refers to the plant's use in treating eye conditions. The plant was known to classical herbalists, but then was not referred to until mentioned again in 1305. Nicholas Culpeper assigned it to the astrological sign Leo, claiming that it strengthened the brain. It was also used to treat bad memory and vertigo. Internally, eyebright is the best single herb for the eyes. Drink eyebright tea liberally and on a daily basis to treat all eye problems. It aids in stimulating the liver to clear the blood and relieve those conditions that affect the clarity of vision. It relieves

discomfort from eyestrain or minor eye irritation. It is good for itchy and watery eyes. It has a cooling and detoxifying property that makes it especially useful in combating inflammation. It is also useful inflammations of the nose and throat. Eyebright is also used for allergies, diabetes, cataracts, hay fever, impure blood, indigestion, nose and throat congestion, and upper respiratory problems. Externally, eyebright is used as an eyewash, especially combined with goldenseal, rue, or fennel for conjunctivitis, eye weakness, ophthalmia, burning and sore eyes, and other eye diseases. The infusion is made using 1 oz. herb to a pint of boiled water, steeped 20 minutes. A beverage tea can be made, using ½ oz. herb steeped in a pint of water.

Prices of mobile phones up for the first time in Spain We all have a love hate relationship with our mobile phone and our network providers. Now for the first time on Spain, mobile prices are on the rise with increases in packages and flat rates applied by operators showing the first upturn in prices since statistics started to be compiled. Mobile providers have been virtually dropping their prices since the mobile phone's commercial inception in Spain and, more specifically, since 2009 when they began to record reliable statistics. Strong competition between companies and bundling of services (fixed, mobile, Internet and television) are the two main causes of this decline. But that period of continuous falls has come to an end. In the last part of 2015, rates of mobile costs showed the first upturn in its history. The so - called index of mobile prices, the main indicator to measure this scale because it is a kind of IPC telephony as it is composed of different mobile services, including calls of convergent packages, grew by almost one point (0.9) between the second and third quarter of 2015, to 31.6 points, according to the latest quarterly report of the National Commission Markets and Competition. This is the first increase since the historical series began compiling this index at the start of 2009. The index was set at a base of 100 and since then mobile prices have fallen about 70%. The upward turn shows a price increase that operators started in the spring of 2015. Thus, Telefonica prices rose in May last year with its offer of Movistar Fusion while Vodafone in April announced new prices for mobile tariff plans (Mini, Smart and Red) accounting for an increase of between one and nine euros . Prices for telecommunications services are highly deflationary. In 2014, they fell 5.7% and 6.6% in 2013,

according to the general CPI. CNMC statistics, which are more refined, has reflected the largest declines. In 2014, mobile phone prices fell 17%; in 2013, they yielded 26%, the highest record low, beating the collapse of 18% in 2012 and 9.6% in 2011. Movistar increased their costs by three euros a month to the price of all packages on Fusion since last February 5th in exchange for increasing the upload speed because of new fibre optic connections that can give 1Gb of data for all mobile lines. Orange started raising prices in March, with a rise of three euros monthly to all its Kangaroo plans, its main convergent package in exchange for raising the speed to fibre customers from 30 to 50 megabytes (Mbps) symmetric and an increase from 150 to 200 minutes of calls to mobiles and 1.5 to 2 GB of data on mobile. Vodafone announced this week that they will follow the example of their main

rivals and raise its plan prices for both mobile and convergent packages between one and three euros from April 18th. The British operator also increases data and calls (fixed to mobile, including relatives and roaming). When these increases, which are much more widespread than those from the spring of 2015 are counted, this is the first annual increase in prices of mobile ever be reflected, as measured by technicians. The increase in prepaid mobile rates also reflected in the average revenue per minute, although very slightly (+ 0.3%) to 6.23 euro cents, due to the rise who have experienced prepaid rates (+10.4 %) offset the decline in contract prices. It also calls subject to flat rate also experienced their first historic increase in the third quarter of 2015 from 5.7 to 6.1 cents per minute. Mobile broadband has been a year reflecting the rise in rates although in this case and corresponds with higher performance, as companies have significantly raised the monthly limit of mobile data consumption. Thus, the average revenue per line and quarter grew 4% last year, to 27.57 euros. Rising prices and higher spending per household with new fibre services and mobile data is also reflected in the sector's turnover. In the third quarter of 2015 this was 7,509 million euros, 2.7% higher than the third quarter of 2014. This is the second consecutive quarter in which grows the turnover of the companies, which has been falling since 2008.

Pressing For Change In Cuba, From Exile In Spain Alejandro Gonzalez Raga and his wife, Bertha Bueno Fuentes, visit the U.N. Council of Human Rights in Geneva in 2013. After Gonzalez was imprisoned in Cuba for five years, the Catholic Church and Spanish government helped negotiate his release, into exile in Spain. His wife and children were allowed to accompany him, and the family currently has refugee status in Spain. Alejandro Gonzalez Raga and his wife, Bertha Bueno Fuentes, visit the U.N. In a cramped ground floor office in Madrid, Alejandro Gonzalez Raga recalls the day of his arrest in Cuba, 13 years ago. There was a knock at the door. It was Cuban state security. "They said, 'You are detained in the name of the people,'" he recalls. "Well that's one I'd never heard before — 'in the name of the people.' Then they took me away." Gonzalez, now 58, is a Cuban opposition activist. By definition that's illegal in Cuba, where the Communist Party is the only political entity allowed. He was arrested on March 18, 2003, in his hometown of Camaguey, one of 75 Cuban journalists, librarians and human rights activists arrested by Fidel Castro's regime over two days. After years of mediation by the Catholic Church and the Spanish government, the detainees were freed in 2008 and 2010 — under the condition that some go into exile in Spain. It was known as Cuba's Black Spring, which happened within days of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq. While the world was watching the U.S. military operation, many Cubans believe their government took advantage of the moment to carry out one of the harshest ever crackdowns on Cuban opposition activists. President Barack Obama's visit to Cuba coincides with the 13th anniversary of the Black Spring. In a one-hour trial a month after his arrest, Gonzalez was convicted of receiving illegal funding from the U.S. government, and sentenced to 14 years behind bars. He admits he got $650 US dollars from a Cuban exile in Florida once, which he used to fund a Christian Democrats party in Camaguey, and a local human rights group — all of which he knew was illegal. "I'm sure they were tapping my phone," Gonzalez says. "But this wasn't cloak and dagger stuff. I did this in broad daylight, and that was the point. To do it in the face of a repressive regime. So I expected to be arrested. I told my wife so." Gonzalez traces his political awakening back to the 1990s, after he watched a close friend drown trying to reach the U.S. in a raft. "Cubans were trying to get out in any way possible," he says. "And I thought, the only way is to form an opposition and try to change the situation — peacefully but decisively." At the time, Gonzalez was doing lots of odd jobs, like many Cubans, to support his

family. He worked as a telegraph operator — Cuba still has those. He worked construction, sold shoes on the black market — and also studied law. He also started delivering cigars to some of Cuba's political prisoners under house arrest and was drawn in to their political debates. Eventually, he started working for them. He's able to rattle off the exact articles of the Cuban constitution he knew he was violating. He was at the local university, drumming up support among students, when Cuban agents arrested him. They surrounded his home nearby with police dogs, he says, to make it look like a drug bust. But Gonzalez says his neighbours knew exactly what he'd been up to and many supported him. Jaqueline Madrazo Luna (left), Rafael León (center) and Ernesto Oliva Torres, pose in front of a Cuba monument in Madrid's Retiro Park. The Cuban government granted them two-week travel permits to visit Spain. They are meeting with the Cuban Observatory of Human Rights, which includes exiled Cuban activists. The Cuban government granted them two-week travel permits to visit Spain. They are meeting with the Cuban Observatory of Human Rights, which includes exiled Cuban activists.

Lauren Frayer A Rapid Exit For more than five years in prison, Gonzalez says he endured psychological torture. Then one day in late 2008, he was in the first group of Black Spring detainees to be freed. "They got me a passport, a suit and tie, threw me in a car and went straight through immigration," he recalls. "The Spanish government had sent a plane." His wife and three children were allowed to go into exile with him. They left with only the clothes on their backs. Within a year of arriving in Madrid, Gonzalez founded the Cuban Observatory of Human Rights, which monitors the situation in Cuba and lobbies the government there to grant two-week travel permits for young Cubans to come to Madrid and get training in the tools of democracy. The non-profit foundation gets some financial support from the U.S. State Department and the Spanish government. On this day, half a dozen Cuban visitors sit in a classroom at the Observatory's office, learning about computers, the Internet, how to write a business plan or start a non-profit group. "These people who are coming over, could potentially run for the presidency of Cuba someday. They're Cuba's future," says Katie Gortz, an American who lives in Madrid and works part-time at the Observatory's office. "Sooner or later, we hope it will happen. It's really exciting." Three of the Cuban visitors, who are on their first trip abroad, say they're amazed by Europe — the cold winter, the traffic, the fancy cars. "For someone like me, who's never travelled outside [Cuba] before, it's astonishing — the feeling, the people," says Rafael León, 33, from Havana. He says state media in Cuba have reported on Spain's economic crisis, and he expected to arrive in a country in shambles. But the quality of living is much higher than he expected, he says. León earns a little more than $25 dollars a month back home, fixing people's computers. In Madrid, he's seen snow for the first time. He surfs Wi-Fi on a 4-G smartphone, a sharp contrast to Cuba where Internet access is limited. "We have to go to a Wi-Fi spot, and most of the time it doesn't work. It's like 0.5-G," he says, laughing. "It's very slow, and only for email — provided by a government company." When he returns to Cuba at the end of March, León wants to be part of a tech revolution as his country opens up. "I'm very excited about it. We've been in the same thing, same place, same everything for the last 50 years," he says. "It's about time." These Cubans believe their government allowed them to come to Madrid and visit an exiled dissident because it would look bad for the government to deny them travel permits, while Obama is visiting Cuba. And they believe the Cuban government trusts them to come home. What keeps them from refusing to go home, and staying in exile, in Europe? León thinks for a moment, and shrugs. "It's just home. All my memories are there. It's my place," he says. "And I want to fight for my place. That's what we are all doing."

400,000-year-old fossils from Spain provide earliest genetic evidence of Neandertals New analysis of nuclear DNA from Sima de los Huesos hominins provides evidence of their relationship to Neandertals. Previous analyses of the hominins from Sima de los Huesos in 2013 showed that their maternally inherited mitochondrial DNA was distantly related to Denisovans, extinct relatives of Neandertals in Asia. This was unexpected since their skeletal remains carry Neandertal-derived features. Researchers of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, have since worked on sequencing nuclear DNA from fossils from the cave, a challenging task as the extremely old DNA is degraded to very short fragments. The results now show that the Sima de los Huesos hominins were indeed early Neandertals. Neandertals may have acquired different mitochondrial genomes later, perhaps as the result of gene flow from Africa. The Sima de los Huesos hominins lived approximately 400,000 years ago during the Middle Pleistocene. Until now it has been unclear how the 28 400,000-year-old individuals found at the Sima de los Huesos (“pit of bones”) site in Northern Spain were related to Neandertals and Denisovans who lived until about 40,000 years ago. A previous report based on analyses of mitochondrial DNA from one of the specimens suggested a distant relationship to Denisovans, which is in contrast to other archaeological evidence, including morphological features that the Sima de los Huesos hominins shared with Neandertals. “Sima de los Huesos is currently the only nonpermafrost site that allow us to study DNA sequences from the Middle Pleistocene, the time period preceding 125,000 years ago”, says Matthias Meyer of the Max

Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, lead author of an article that was published in Nature today. “The recovery of a small part of the nuclear genome from the Sima de los Huesos hominins is not just the result of our continuous efforts in pushing for more sensitive sample isolation and genome sequencing technologies”, Meyer adds. “This work would have been much more difficult without the special care that was taken during excavation”.

“We have hoped for many years that advances in molecular analysis techniques would one day aid our investigation of this unique assembly of fossils”, explains Juan-Luis Arsuaga of the Complutense University in Madrid, Spain, who has led the excavations at Sima de los Huesos for three decades. “We have thus removed some of the specimens with clean instruments and left them embedded in clay to minimize alterations of the material that might take place after excavation.” The nuclear DNA sequences recovered from two specimens secured in this way show that they belong to the Neandertal evolutionary lineage and are more closely related to Neandertals than to Denisovans. This finding indicates that the population divergence between Denisovans and Neandertals had already occurred by 430,000 years ago when the Sima de los Huesos hominins lived. According to Svante Pääbo of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology “these results provide important anchor points in the timeline of human evolution. They are consistent with a rather early divergence of 550,000 to 750,000 years ago of the modern human lineage from archaic humans”. Consistent with the previous study, the mitochondrial DNA of the Sima de los Huesos hominins is closer related to Denisovans than Neandertals. Mitochondrial DNA seen in Late Pleistocene Neandertals may thus have been acquired by them later in their history, perhaps as a result of gene flow from Africa. The researchers propose that retrieval of further mitochondrial and nuclear DNA from Middle Pleistocene fossils could help to clarify the evolutionary relationship between Middle and Late Pleistocene hominins in Eurasia.

Essential Guide: Preparing Your Motorbike for Spring LET'S BE honest: as much as bikers appreciate being able to beat the traffic every day of the year, not many actually enjoy riding in freezing temperatures, gusting winds or torrential rain. But it's that glorious time of year when the sunshine actually starts to feel warm, when the roads stay dry for more than five minutes and the gritting lorries have been bundled away completely (we hope). Adventure awaits through the picturesque villages of the Home Counties, the stunning vistas of the Scottish Highlands and the twists and turns of beautiful Wales, so for bikers it's time to think about getting back in the saddle. Baby Steps If your bike has been hooked up to a trickle charger over the winter, well done; your battery will be conditioned, your bike will start first time and your family won't have to deal with a torrent of expletives coming from the garage. If the battery is flat, a bump-start or jump-start could restore it to life. Be sure to read the owner's manual first, though, because some bikes need different procedures to others – and jump-starting could actually harm the complex electrics on newer bikes. If it starts and runs at a standstill with no issues, you'll no doubt be itching to get out on the road as soon as possible. Don't go yet, though, because tyre safety is a crucial point that you can't afford to overlook. Roll the bike into space so that

the tyres have rotated enough to allow you to check for flat spots, cracking in the tread surface or sidewalls and, of course, pressure. Pressure will almost certainly have dropped over the last few months. Tyres are vital to safety on two wheels, so if there are any signs that yours might be past their best then it's important to get new ones fitted. The rule for all vehicles is to always go for the best tyres you can afford, and for bikes nothing less than the best should be good enough regardless of price. Servicing A lot of riders schedule their annual service and MOT, if needed, for around this time of year to make sure their bike's mechanicals are in top condition for the dry season. It's a great idea and allows a qualified mechanic to replace key fluids and find any potential issues before you cover much mileage. Finding a serious

fault when you're 100 miles from home is often an avoidable headache. Biking Kit In general, motorbike gear is unlikely to have degraded much while being packed away in storage, but take the chance to remind yourself how old your crash helmet is. If it's older than five years, the structure could be beginning to break down beneath the surface without showing any visible signs. It's best to look into a replacement for this year's riding. Make sure the armour in protective jackets and trousers is still in place, or replace it if needed. Check for cracks and signs of wear and tear, particularly in leather gear, and apply coats of

protective waxes or leather 'food' to older garments. Other than that, a general clean-up and dust-off should suffice. Training It's also worth thinking about yourself. If you've not ridden for up to six months, your skills could be a bit rusty. The basics come naturally, but it's good to make sure you're on top of the finer points of bike control. That way you can better enjoy your riding and stay safer. Refresher sessions are available with any good motorbike school, as well as with your local Institute of Advanced Motorists group. Covering topics like reading the road, choosing lines through corners, negotiating mud-splattered country roads and much more that's highly relevant at this time of year, especially to bikers, getting some advanced training is a superb way to start the season. Tick all the right boxes for your bike and your gear this Spring, and you'll make sure your riding ticks all the right boxes for you.

Mazda Take The Top Spot At The UK Car Of The Year 2016 Awards

Mazda has fought off a list of impressive rivals to take the UK Car of the Year 2016 title with their iconic MX-5. The latest version of the model was up against the likes of McLaren, Volvo and BMW, emerging victorious in more than one category by also winning Best Open Top Car of the Year. Mazda also notched up another win with the Supermini of the Year gong for the Mazda2. “With the latest MX-5, Mazda has created the perfect roadster. A lightweight engaging, simplistic and even practical vehicle, which is an absolute pleasure to drive,” said John Challen, director of the UK Car of the Year Awards. Fellow director, Alisdair Suttie, commented: “The fourth generation is true to the original spirit of the MX-5: light, nimble and enormous fun.” Since the launch of the latest fourth generation, the MX-5 has continued to woo buyers with Motoring.co.uk testing the model describing it as a true driver’s car for its nimbleness, agility and though it’s not the most powerful in its class, it is certainly one of the most enjoyable. Jeremy Thompson, Mazda Motors UK

managing director commented: “I’m delighted that the all-new Mazda MX-5 has added another prestigious award to its growing tally of accolades. The MX-5 embodies all that is great about our products. Its fun to drive character has earned it a place in the hearts of driving enthusiasts the world over.” Narrowly missing out on the top spot was the Volvo XC90, the Swedish brand’s latest generation SUV did take the Best SUV title, while third place went to the Skoda Superb Estate. The larger version of the Smart, the Forfour won in the Best City Car category, while McLaren had something to celebrate as their beastly performance model, the 570S took the Best Performance Car title. The UK Car of the Year Awards, supported by Cox Automotive, bring together a selection of Britain’s motoring journalists to form a judging panel. Driving all category winners at a media day, the judges cast their votes on the top models in 12 different categories, eventually choosing one winner to take the coveted top prize.

Motoring 33 Renault Alpine Sub-brand Reborn With Striking Coupé www.coastrider.net www.thecoastrider.netCoastRider CoastRider - Edition - Edition 470590 - March - March 5th 2013 22nd 2016

The Renault Group, Alpine Vision, concept car has been revealed in Monte Carlo marking the return of the manufacturer's legendary sub-brand. Details are sketchy, but it is 2-door coupé - that the company calls its “premium sports car” - which has a 4-cylinder, turbocharged, engine that propels it to 62mph in about 4.5 seconds. Renault Group Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Carlos Ghosn, said: “Motorsports and sports cars are deeply rooted in the DNA of Groupe Renault. Earlier this month we announced our return to Formula 1 with a Renault team; and today we are announcing Alpine”. He added: “This is an exciting next step in our strategy to leverage talent and technology between road and track, and we look forward to reaching new customers in the sport premium cars segment.” Exterior styling Alpine Vision styling is reminiscent of

production predecessors such as the A110. The front lights, roof line, bonnet and curve of the rear window strike a particular cord with enthusiasts. The manufacturer claims this concept car incorporates “sensual design”. Interior styling The cabin has a flat-bottomed steering wheel, blue lighting, start/stop button – under a clear plastic flap to prevent accidental use contrast stitches and dark coloured race seats. This mid-engined sports car also has a flat-screen display and paddles behind the steering wheel to operate the automatic gearbox. Launch date and price tag The Alpine Vision will now evolve into a production version for launch in 2017. Expect first deliveries in Europe followed by “other markets worldwide”. Renault expects its “design, weight, handling, agility and attention to detail” to be “very close” to the concept. Rumours suggest this forthcoming sports coupé will cost from £50,000, but this has not been confirmed. Alternatives for a similar sum include the Jaguar FType Coupé 3.0 V6 340PS Supercharged, Porsche Cayman S 3.4 and BMW 4 Series 435d A xDrive M Sport.

Faithful reinterpretation of the brand Alpine Managing Director, Michael van der Sande, explained: “All of us at Alpine are proud to have been entrusted with the task of bringing back Alpine to sports car lovers around the world”. He added: “Our job is to faithfully reinterpret famous Alpines of the past and project Alpine into the future with a beautifully designed, agile, high-

performance sports car. Our Alpine Vision show car is immediately recognisable as an Alpine, yet resolutely modern”. Racing aspirations Alpine also plans to “pursue racing” including the 2016 World Endurance Championship at Le Mans - to build its sports coupé within Dieppe (France) and establish a network to sell its product.

Women love a guy in a Vauxhall Astra

MEN ARE most attractive when they're behind the wheel of a Vauxhall Astra, according to a study. Brand new research asked women to vote for the car they found most attractive when they were looking for a partner. The good-looking Astra won, followed by the BMW 1 Series and the Audi A3. The two other cars on the podium are similar in size and format, but are both premium German brands. Around a

quarter of women asked picked the Astra, with the much more expensive Land Rover Discovery 4 getting just 11% of the vote. The women cited many reasons for using cars to establish attractiveness in a partner, including wealth/financial stability. A fifth of women said that they could discern a man's personality type by the car he drives, while over a quarter said that men with nice cars respect themselves - and women - more.

The Spanish exodus shows no signs of letting up On January 1 of this year, 2,305,030 Spaniards were registered with consulates abroad, representing a 5.6% rise from the same date in 2015, according to figures released on Thursday by the National Statistics Institute (INE). Compared with 2009, the first year that these indicators were published, the increase has soared to 56.6%. One of the main reasons for the trend is the nationalization of foreign citizens. Between 2009 and 2016 the number of Spanish passports holders living abroad who were born in Spain has only risen 21%. Recent Spanish economic growth has failed to stem the flow of migrants looking for better job opportunities abroad The figures show that several of the countries with the highest concentration of Spanish residents are in Latin America: Argentina (439,236), Venezuela (188,025), Brazil (125,150), Cuba (128,541) and Mexico (123,189). The recent growth of the Spanish economy has so far failed to stem the flow of migrants looking for better job opportunities abroad.

There are now 102,498 Spaniards living in Britain, a 77% rise from 2009, and 139,555 in Germany, a 35% increase from seven years ago. But Íñigo Domingo, a demographer at the Center for Demography Studies, believes that these figures underrepresent the real number of Spaniards living abroad. There are now 102,498 Spaniards living in Britain and

139,555 in Germany Consulate registration is voluntary, he notes, and many young people who travel to other parts of the world never bother to take that step, believing that they will only be abroad on a temporary basis and that registering will not bring any benefits. This expert adds that consular registration also automatically means migrants being taken off the local electoral rolls in their place of residence in Spain, leading to the loss of regular access to the Spanish healthcare service or eligibility for subsidized housing. Besides the growing number of Spanish residents abroad, Spain for the first time last year registered more deaths than births, as well as record emigration figures, leading to the conclusion that the country’s population is dwindling. Birth rate in Spain rises for first time in half a decade Average maternity age up to 31.8 years in 2014 compared to 31.7 years the year before Life expectancy for Spaniards has increased to a record 83 years

Torrevieja win two in a row The early 5.00am start may have helped to wake up the CD Torrevieja who travelled all the way to the north of the Province where they ended the streak of home games without a loss at the Castalia of Castellรณn by beating them 12. Castellรณn had won nine of the last 10 home games with the remaining, one drawn. It must be said that the game was marked by a poor performance of the referee, Morales Yuste from Valencia, especially with his actions during the second half with cards a plenty. Ruben Suarez and Javi Selvas were both welcomed warmly by the crowd in appreciation of formerly playing for the club and they greeted acquaintances made from Castellรณn. Although it was expected that Luis Carlos would play as number 3, after a physical test it was felt that he could not play, so he gave his place to Carrasco who would be the author of the first goal. A minute of silence was observed in memory of Antonio Perez Balada, a former Castellรณn

player from the last century; local players came out with a shirt with his name that was delivered to his family along with items of memorabilia. Ruben Suarez was booed and shouted at by some castellonenses spectators whenever he touched the ball or was about to put it into play. Goalkeeper Enrique Navarro Ruiz made his debut for the club and his first intervention (after Torrevieja's goalkeeper being expelled by the referee) was to save Tariq's penalty which would have ended the game in a tie. The win keeps Torrevieja in tenth place and nine points away from a Play Off place and although it may be a little too late, there is an outside chance of them making up the distance. This Saturday, not Sunday, CD Torrevieja play CF Torre Levante in the 3rd Division Group 6, game 31 at the Vicente Garcia Stadium: Saturday March 26, 2016 with a five pm kick off, at the same time that the CF Torrevieja Cadete team take on Murcia.

Torrevieja Cup spreads its wings The "Torrevieja Cup", the City of Salt's youth football tournament is spreading its wings this Easter weekend and playing games away from the Sports City. This Easter's event brings together 130 teams with the schedule of games running from Holy Thursday to Easter Sunday. This year the Cup has a truly international feel. There will be four Japanese squads, plus the usual suspects and the main contenders for the trophies in Elche, Hercules, Malaga and others from the Community of Madrid. The "Torrevieja Cup" traditional international youth football tournament has attracted 130 teams, of both male and female teams and brings together some 2,000 players, who will be accompanied by about 250 technicians and representatives of the clubs, along with several hundred family and companions. They also benefit from the information and advice from an organization of about 80 people and technicians. Although, paradoxically, Torrevieja is not staging any of the games this year, organizers have kept the salinero municipality in the name of the tournament, and in the words of organizer, Alberto del Amo, "we would like the competition to be held in Torrevieja in future editions, as

well as in the town of Orihuela, which has also shown interest. " Del Amo said that according to his calculations, there will be "a million euros of economic impact in the area, adding overnight stays, drinks, travel and other items." The competition budget is estimated at about 400,000 euros. The presentation of "Torrevieja 'International' Cup" 2016 was held with the presence of representatives of the various populations who serve as headquarters, which are Pilar de la Horadada, Rojales, Guardamar, San Miguel de Salinas, Montesinos, Benijรณfar, and this year's centre at the privately run sports facility of the Orihuela Costa, the CDM, who on Sunday will host the finals. Along with numerous teams in the region of the Vega Baja and the province such as Elche and Hercules, this year draws attention to the participation of four Japanese squads, also highlighting the usual contingent of clubs coming from the Community of Madrid and pull other teams like Malaga. During the four days of the championship there will more than just football happening as several parallel activities to the football takes place, such as a party or contest 'selfies'. In addition, during the tournament will respect and sportsmanship values will be respected above any competitive issue.

La Vega Baja thus become the nerve centre of youth football in the province of Alicante. However there is another youth football tournament taking place over the Easter weekend; XIX Torneo Futbol Base Ciudad de Torrevieja 'Memorial Manuel Aniorte'. Although this is the 19th running of the tournament to commemorate the passing of the former 15 years old Torrevieja Cadete Manuel Aniorte, to date it's been a one match invitation that in the past has attracted teams such as Atletico and Real Madrid, plus top local teams for a 90 minute showpiece at the Vicente Garcia Stadium. This year the event has become a six team tournament giving the cream of the region's Under 16 players a chance to show off their skills to both parents and many local and national coaches. Ranero FC, Real Murcia and CF Torrevieja make up Group One while Elche, Alcoy and Cartagena are Group Two with the Group winners meeting in the final on Sunday morning at 11.00am. The games will all be played at the Nelson Mandela Stadium and admission is free, with everyone welcome to come along and enjoy seeing what the future of Spanish professional football has in waiting in the wings.
