CF Torrevieja win

After losing the first leg 1:2, CF Torrevieja's Juvenile Under 19 team came back in style to win 2:0 on Saturday in front of around 500 spectators. They beast an unimaginative and mouthy Tavernas Team from Valencia who picked up a slew of yellow cards and had coaches and personnel sent from the bench while their small supports group of around 50 people at one stage tried to entice the 400 or so Torrevieja supporters into a fight causing the Guardia Civil to be sent in. The win puts Torrevieja into a two leg final

against Denia with the winner taking all and being promoted into the National League for next season. Every local football fan is invited to cheer on the boys in their quest for promotion. Admission to the ground is absolutely free. The first leg will be played at home, in Torrevieja this Saturday May 28th at 6.00pm at the Esteban Rosado (Polideportivo) of the Sports City, beside the swimming pool complex, that used to be called the Infanta Cristina. The game will be played between Torrevieja CF Juvenil and CD Denia Juvenil and everyone is welcome.

The PP accuses the mayor of Torrevieja of having a "secret pact" with Acciona Torrevieja's Mayor Jose Manuel Dolon has but one claim to fame. He and his Green Party have great difficulty in trying not to include in most of their press releases and when they speak in Public. He was directly responsible for helping to put former Mayor Pedro Hernandez Mateo behind bars for three years for his part in awarding the garbage service for the city to a 'favoured' company. The Mayor is also responsible for Garbage Services in the City. He also threatened the Free Press with denuncias when he first took power because a local newspaper published a leaked story about the fact that he possibly could not manage to take the garbage service in-house rather than put it out to tender. Recently, it has also been speculated that Jose Manuel Dolon wants to spend up to 18 million euros buying a fleet of Garbage Trucks to run the city's Garbage collection and cleaning system, effectively taking away the vast majority of investment that the PP had set aside for investment, meaning that such facilities as the Semana Santa Museum, Sports Centres, Municipal Theatre, cultural events, international social centre, Youth Performance Centre, International Auditorium and Conservatory of Music, and many other local projects, would not have the investment needed. Least we should forget that the Mayor will hold his post no longer than June 2017 when if the Pentapartito are still in power, Fanny Serrano will take over as Mayor. Last week opposition Partido Popular Councillor Carmen Gómez (PP) criticized Mayor Jose Manuel Dolon (Green) because he "had the audacity to try and hide and qualify his failure with respect to the

decentralization of garbage collection and street cleaning.” She also alleged that a "secret pact" between the Mayor and waste specialists Acciona had been under negotiation. She did not elaborate on this but recalled that the Mayor made references to various meetings held with executives of this company, precisely in anticipation that the firm could keep performing their garbage and cleaning activity in Torrevieja for longer than expected. The Councillor also said that in this situation, "the boss is the company" and they will work without a contract. The Mayor announced on Friday that there is no material time for the direct management funding to be approved before the end of the contract with Acciona on June 14, 2016. So the company must assume the provision of continuing to provide such services, which is the most important for the

municipality in current spending, however, they would continue, conveniently, without a contract. The PP stressed that José Manuel Dolon previously has accused "Acciona" of being corrupt "or for "rigging contracts" and that he now plans to pay bills without a contract for this service, and this is happening after a year of misrule as Mayor." The councilman said that "the Mayor is saying that this is not going to mean anything, only that the council and taxpayers will just pay more: a pittance. The Pentapartito obsession with direct management means that once again they have yet to respond to the reports we requested before the full Council Meeting". The Secretary of the group, and not the mayor, responded to the request of the opposition reports last April 29 indicating that they were not necessary at that time.” "Layoffs and oppositions" The PP councillor also expressed concern of the lack of a contract for this week by week deal and that "what we said would happen has come to pass and the next thing we know will be announcement of layoffs, wage decreases and no guarantee of jobs and working conditions." Gomez said that the Mayor could not specify what "the company will charge to continue to carry out these services, because now the boss of the cleaning company is putting together a new price for their services. The bills of these next 4-5 months will be very high. We do not know what it will cost the service from June 14. We wonder what secret pact has been reached with Acciona by Mayor Jose Manuel Dolon?”

UK to lead global partnerships to tackle corruption At least 18 countries commit to international partnerships to drive up standards and integrity in government institutions and professional associations, as part of landmark Anti-Corruption Summit. The UK is to lead a new international network of partnerships between countries and institutions to stamp out corrupt practices and strengthen the integrity of government institutions globally. Drawing on expert development economist Professor Sir Paul Collier’s “twinning” approach, the new ‘Institutional Integrity Network’ will see countries partnering up to share high professional standards and best practice in vital areas of government and in professional associations; including tax, budgets, natural resource management and accountancy. This is a key strand of the Prime Minister’s international Anti-Corruption Summit, which aims to step up global action to expose, punish and drive out corruption. It will boost development opportunities and improve the delivery of life-saving services in many of the poorest countries. As part of the international network of partnerships, Britain is leading the way by sharing its own expertise through introducing a new ‘GREAT for Partnership’ initiative - part of the GREAT Britain campaign designed to project the best of the UK overseas. International Development Secretary Justine Greening said: “Corruption is a menace that undermines all our efforts to end poverty and promote global prosperity – we must work together to win this fight by ensuring every country builds robust institutions and tax systems so they can stand on their own two feet. Our new UK-led partnership network will stamp out corrupt practices in international governments - which are a grave threat to the national interests of every country,

including the UK.” GREAT for Partnership will see key UK bodies, such as the Office for Budget Responsibility, National Audit Office and National Crime Agency, partner with countries including Nigeria, Kenya, and Tanzania to embed integrity in their institutions and build a shared culture of honesty and probity. As well as prioritising anti-corruption, GREAT for Partnership will also establish partnerships with countries on health, extractives and a range of other sectors, including the rule of law, climate, infrastructure, education and digital. New UK partnerships announced at the Summit include: The UK National Audit Office and Nigeria’s Office of the Auditor General working together to strengthen organisational governance and compliance with international audit standards: The National Crime Agency partnering with relevant counterpart agencies in Tanzania, Kenya and Nigeria to strengthen their anticorruption institutions: The UK committing to an institutional integrity partnership with Kenya to support the development of its financial regulatory bodies through provision of UK expertise.

The Office of Budget Responsibility partnering with Georgia’s Parliamentary Budget Office to strengthen budget transparency, including through improving the quality of economic and fiscal reporting: The UK stands ready to provide financial and technical assistance to the newly announced Afghanistan Anti-Corruption Justice Centre, including through work with UK institutions: As set out in the recent aid strategy, the UK is doing more than ever to tackle organised crime and corruption and already supports a large number of existing partnerships. For example, the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors and the Better Regulation Delivery Office helped the Bangladeshi government tackle weak building regulations following the Rana Plaza disaster. The Crown Prosecution Service has helped the Jamaican Major Organised Crime and AntiCorruption Agency to develop the tools and skills to investigate and prosecute corruption and other serious crime. British Ambassador Simon Manley launches ‘Our Local Ambassadors’

A new campaign launched a few weeks ago aims to help British expats fit even better into the Spanish way of life. The British Consulate in Alicante has unveiled a team of ‘Our Local Ambassadors’, formed of expats whose experiences of moving to and living on the Costas make them trusted guides to other Brits. Their stories will tell of what to do and what to avoid, on issues ranging from property purchasing and learning the language, through to registering for public services and getting involved in the local community. Simon Manley said: “Our Local Ambassadors have been there and done it, and we hope their experiences will help other Brits to enjoy even more life in Spain and all that this country has to offer. We hope their stories will help people to find out about what to expect when moving to and living in Spain, discovering how to obtain health and social services, learning at least some of the language, and being well prepared for life’s inevitable difficulties when they do crop up. Adjusting and ‘fitting in’ is the secret to integrating into life here, making sure you do the right things so that you can avoid stressful problems later, for instance when you fall ill or reach old age. I hope that Our Local Ambassadors will give you ideas, tell you about shortcuts and help you learn from them.” Sarah-Jane Morris, Consul for the Alicante region, added. “This is the most popular region in Spain for Brits wanting to move to the sun. Part of our job is to assist people when they need it, but even better is to help them avoid future difficulties by doing the right things now. Many of these cases could have been easier for Brits to bear if they had spoken some Spanish or had better links and support in the local community. Last year the Consulate assisted in nearly 90 hospitalisations, more than 100 deaths, and over 200 arrests. Staff also issued more than 1000 emergency travel documents to people whose passports were lost or stolen. Proxy vote in EU Referendum Over the last two months more than 120,000 have clicked on voter registration webpage of the British Consulate. British expats who have been registered to vote in UK within the last 15 years have until Tuesday 7th June to apply for a proxy vote in the EU Referendum if they cannot do so themselves or have not applied for a postal vote. That is the final deadline for registering to take part in one of the most historic decisions that the British people will make for a generation. The deadline for registering for a postal vote has now passed, but you can still appoint someone you trust in the UK to vote for you.

Simon Manley, British Ambassador to Spain, said: Although the deadline for expats to vote by post in the EU referendum has now passed, you can still register to vote by proxy, as long as you do so by 7 June. We all know how important the referendum will be, for us, for our children, and for our country. Whether you think we should leave or remain, I would encourage those who have not yet registered to vote, and who are eligible to do so, to avail themselves of this final opportunity to have their say on 23 June. I am well aware that expats who have lived overseas for more than 15

years are ineligible, and I know that many are frustrated about that. The government will bring forward the Overseas Elector Bill to abolish this arbitrary time limit, but it must undergo full Parliamentary scrutiny and debate, so unfortunately it cannot be passed before the Referendum.” More than 120,000 people with Spanish IP addresses have now visited www.gov.uk/register-to-vote since the beginning of the year. And thanks to the online system, more than 180,000 expats worldwide have so far completed their registration, nearly double the number for last year’s General Election, itself a record figure. The process is easy and takes just five minutes. Go to register to vote website or search for ‘UK register to vote’ on gov.uk. You only need your National Insurance number and passport. If you did vote in the general election last year, don’t assume you are still on the roll: just as in the UK, you must renew your registration every year. You have until 7 June to go online and make sure you can have your say. If you were last on the electoral roll in Northern Ireland then you need to act quickly. The Electoral Office for Northern Ireland says that if you are appointing a proxy to vote at the EU Referendum, the deadline for sending in your printed application is 5.00pm on 3 June.

Ryanair offers €20 flights to UK to vote against Brexit Low-cost carrier Ryanair has thrown its weight behind the stay-in-Europe campaign, launching a Fly Home to Vote Remain €19.99 ticket – including taxes – between June 22 and Thursday June 23. The move is aimed at encouraging the 1.2 million British nationals living within the EU to fly back to Britain to vote in the so-called Brexit referendum on June 23, but the cheap flight offer is open to all nationalities. To take advantage of the offer, travellers have until midnight Thursday May 19 to book on Ryanair’s website. The offer applies to all UK airports. The company says that the EU’s open skies policy has transformed the tourism sector Ryanair has supported the UK remaining in Europe, saying membership creates jobs and boosts economic growth. The company says that the EU’s open-skies policy has transformed the tourism sector, while

the free movement of goods and services has made Britain one of the most competitive economies in Europe. No Clothes? No Beach Nudists have lost a sevenyear legal battle for access to a popular tourist resort beach on Spain's southwestern tip. The Supreme Court rejected an appeal by the Spanish Federation of Naturism against local government legislation prohibiting nudists to use beaches within the historic port city of Cadiz. The federation had argued that nudism could be considered a fundamental right to freedom of ideology as defended by Spain's constitution. The court disagreed, saying in a ruling Friday that local authorities of Cadiz had the power to "manage properly the use of its services, equipment, infrastructure, facilities and public spaces." It said the federation had failed to make a convincing case that nudism was "at this moment, an accepted practice by the majority of beachgoers." The ruling applies to the beaches that fringe the ancient city but nudists are permitted to use a beach outside city limits. The federation had argued that Cadiz's city council had tried to roll back "the

social progress" Spain had made in recent decades by allowing nude beachgoers to be fined up to 750 euros. Cadiz became one of Spain's wealthiest cities and was among the world's busiest ports when it got the monopoly for trade with the New World after Christopher Columbus discovered America. Gold and silver from Spain's empire flowed through Cadiz's docks, turning the city into the architectural gem that tourists flock to visit today. Spain also gained a reputation as an easy-going beach destination in the 1950s after the mayor of Benidorm asked dictator Gen. Francisco Franco to stop police from harassing and issuing fines to women for wearing bikinis on the town's beaches.

Three Spanish Olympic sailors robbed at gunpoint in Rio, Brazil Spain's Sailing Federation complained Saturday that there was a lack of security in Rio, just three months ahead of the Olympic Games which open in early August. The trainer of Spain's Nacra 17 catamaran class sailors, Santi LopezVazquez, said he and two other team members were confronted by "five youths with two pistols" while they walked to breakfast in Rio's picturesque Santa Teresa district. "They took all the work equipment we were carrying at that time," LopezVazquez said. "It was a very unpleasant experience." Rio's tourism police said the items stolen included a bag with money, documents and a camera. The Spanish team said the robbery occurred in the early hours of Saturday, while police said it happened on Friday. Crime prevalent Away from popular tourist areas, Rio's

large, poorer neighbourhoods known as favelas are often the scene of shootouts between drug gangs and heavily armed police. Muggings and crimes involving firearms also occur often in wealthier suburbs in the south of Rio de Janeiro. Sailing crews preparing for the Olympics have already expressed concern about pollution and floating garbage in Guanabara Bay, where they will race. Recession and scandals Brazil is mired in the deepest recession since the 1930s and a series of scandals, including the suspension of President Dilma Rousseff ahead of an impeachment trial. There are also ongoing concerns over the spread of the Zika virus. The outbreak began in early 2015, before spreading to the rest of Latin America. Transmitted by mosquitos, the virus is believed to cause birth defects and neurological problems. There have been around 1,300 confirmed cases of microcephaly, babies born with small brains, in Brazil, with thousands more under investigation. Olympic worries include slow ticket sales, cuts in security spending, and the death of two cyclists last month when a clifftop bike lane built for Olympic visitors collapsed into the sea. Interim President Michel Temer is expected to declare the games "open" on 5 August.

Kate Middleton is a source of inspiration to millions of women across the planet. The clothes that she picks out at stores routinely sell out in a matter of hours. The latest example of this is a short red coat that the Duchess of Cambridge purchased for €50 from Spanish fashion giant Zara. This item went out of stock two days after Middleton wore it to an event on Sunday to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday. In Spain, Queen Letizia routinely shops at Massimo Dutti, Mango and Zara A few minutes after the duchess appeared at the Windsor Horse Show wearing the coat – over a white Dolce & Gabbana dress worth €6,000 – sales of the item spiked. This massive imitation of the princess’ style is possible because she often picks

out low-cost clothes that are affordable to millions. This is not the first time that Middleton has shopped at Zara. A €19 short necklace she purchased there, to go along with a Rolland Mouret dress, also sold out within hours. The ripple effect extends to her entire family, and her children have also become fashion trendsetters. A €34 white bathrobe that Prince George wore during an official visit to Kensington Palace by US President Barack Obama flew off the shelves. Fiancé falls to his death Toro de la Vega bull will after stag night out be spared, not speared

A 35-year-old man from Madrid died on Sunday morning after falling out of a hotel window in the northern city of Gijón, the police reported. The victim, who was engaged to be married, had just returned from a bachelor party with friends. The incident took place at 8am, when the fiancé fell out of the window on his fifth-floor room at the Begoña Hotel, in the Asturian city of Gijón. The victim has been identified only as F.C.V.P. According to a witness, the victim had a cellphone in his hand Several witnesses reported hearing the impact of a body against the ground

on 17 de Agosto street. “I was having breakfast and I heard a noise, and suddenly a man came into the cafeteria and said ‘Call 112, a person has fallen’ and then the police showed up,” said one witness in statements to the local daily El Comercio. According to this witness, the victim had a cellphone in his hand. Emergency workers who rushed to the scene confirmed the death. The exact cause of the incident is still under investigation, although the police believe it was an accident, based on testimony provided by the victim’s friends and brother, who were out all night with him.

The regional government of Castilla y León has announced it is to ban the killing of bulls during festivities that take place outside a bull ring, among the most famous of which is the Toro de la Vega, a hunt using lances and clubs dating back to the Middle Ages organized by locals from the town of Tordesillas each September. Spokeswoman Rosa Valderón explained on Thursday that the hunt will go ahead this year as usual, but that the bull will not be speared. In recent years, opposition to the Toro de la Vega has grown throughout Spain, with animal rights activists from home and abroad traveling to Tordesillas, in the northwestern province of Valladolid

to protest. Last September, Spain’s Pacma animal rights party organized a march in Madrid that attracted thousands of people to protest the Toro de la Vega, which is promoted as a tourist attraction. A petition with 120,000 signatures was presented to the mayor of Tordesillas calling on the Socialist Party-run local council to end the bull run, which it described as “one of the cruelest festivals.” Rompesuelas, the bull killed at the Toro de la Vega in 2015, took 20 minutes to die after being speared and clubbed during the hunt. The jury overseeing the event declared the death of the animal “null,” deciding that participants had broken the rules.

The Guardia Civil has dismantled a network that had exported more than 2.5 tonnes of eels illegally as part of operation "BLACK GLASS" and has arrested of eight people and held three more. They have also conducted a house search where it has uncovered accounting "B", which credited the illegal export of Anguillas, whose final value could exceed 4,000,000 euros. This operation also involved the cooperation of EUROPOL The Guardia dismantled a network that had exported more than 2.5 tonnes of Anguilla illegally. The Operational Central Environment Unit (UCOMA) of the Head of Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) of the Guardia Civil, as part of operation "BLACK GLASS" has proceeded dismantling an organization composed

of 20 people, with the arrest of eight of its main protagonists and are investigating another three, all belonging to a network dedicated to the illegal marketing of Anguilla that are charged with the crimes of belonging to a criminal group against wildlife and smuggling. The operation was centred on a house search where they seized different materials that added up to the illegal export of 2,527.43 kilos of Anguilla whose final value could exceed 4,000,000 euros. The Operation began in October 2015, when agents started performing a series of steps in the fishing season for this species in the sector's activity, and were aware that some Chinese nationals had rented a house near the Barajas airport in Madrid where they had installed different materials suitable for conservation of live eels. From that time and collaborating with EUROPOL and other units of the Guardia Civil (SEPRONA, and other units of the Command of Madrid, Vizcaya, Salamanca and Zaragoza), they carried out several interventions in

airports and other points of the Spain, where almost 700 kilos of eels valued at more than 1,000,000 euros were seized. The success in the operation as due to collaboration with and thanks to the communication channels with other countries, with more seizures in other international airports, especially Hong Kong. Continuing the investigation, the Guardia Civil found that residents near the airport in Madrid were selling eels in different parts of the country, especially in Galicia. Later, they used false documents to disguise the origin and nature of the product and to export large quantities to Asian countries. Therefore, the officers proceeded to search the home near the airport and detain and investigate several people as responsible for the events in varying degrees of participation, some of them with a history of arms trafficking, among others. The Chinese mafia are also linked to the illegal trade in Anguilla. Researchers also noted a substantial change in this type of crime as in previous investigations the majority were Spanish citizens who developed all this illegal activity to sell eels in China and in this case the structure and commercial activity, except fishing ships, is in the hands of foreigners. Similarly, it had been noted that shipments of eels were made through suitcases that were carried by travellers as "mules", on different flights, as the quantities per traveller, provided they do not exceed 50,000 euros of value, are not considered crime. However, the fact that this activity was organized through a group structure is a crime, regardless of the quantity transported. The European eel (Anguilla) is a species that is contained in the CITES Convention with a figure of special protection (Appendix II). Given the situation in which it is currently, the competent authorities approved the total suspension of exports, i.e. a zero quota. In its juvenile state, known as elvers, it reaches an important economic value, which promotes commercialization. The operation is still open, because it is waiting on the location of 9 others against whom charges were made.

Finding Metal ADAPT, Association of English Speakers of San Pedro del Pinatar / La Asociación de AngloParlantes de San Pedro del Pinatar) are a vibrant and growing Association based in San Pedro del Pinatar. The association has two simple aims: the wellbeing of their English speaking members and the integration of members, through the Association, into the wider Spanish Community. The global ADAPT organisation has an open day on Saturday June 4th at the Lo Pagan day centre/pensionista. Here, you can find out about a wealth of group activities that ADAPT organises, where you can join as a member, and meet new people. Whilst their activities are based in San Pedro del Pinatar, you do not have to be resident there to join them and they are open to people of all nationalities who wish to speak in English. You are very welcome to participate in Adapt activities on two occasions without being obliged to become members of Adapt. Their main meeting is held on the first Saturday of every month at the Pensionista Center, Lo Pagan, Murcia at 10.30 a.m. The ADAPT Metal Detecting Club will also be on hand to introduce you to this exciting hobby and will be showing displays of what you can find on the coastal beaches and in the sea. Organisers of the group Rod and Robin said: “We get calls from time to time to do search and recover, this was the case when I received via a friend a story of a lady who had lost her wedding ring whilst picking olives near where I live in the campo. I contacted her and after verifying the details arranged to meet where it had been lost. Cheryl and her husband Paul had been picking olives and at the end of the day she discovered she was missing her ring. They had searched through the barrel of picked olives and searched the area around without luck. I did a search around the trees and on walking over to the next set of trees found it. To say she was pleased was an understatement. The next meeting of the ADAPT Association will be on the Saturday 4th June 2016. Property Homework Time Brits looking to buy a property abroad were being firmly advised to make sure they do their research and homework before they part with their money. Buyers that visited the 'A Place in the Sun' exhibition were urged to do their homework as sales to Brits soar in Spain. The warning comes as new figures show that sales to Brits of homes in Spain soared in 2015, rising by nearly 50% to 9,700 properties compared with 6,700 the year before. The most popular regions were Andalucia and Valencia, both with more than 3,000 British buyers, followed by the Canary Islands with more than 1,200 Brit purchases. The Balearics and Murcia were also popular. Cheap prices and the enduring appeal of Spain mean it is the number one choice”, says Will Middleton, Europe consular director for the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO). But property law and purchase procedures can be very different abroad, so – wherever you are looking – don’t let the sun go to your head. They strongly urge buyers to get all the independent advice and local authority checks that you would at home. Avoid rushing into a dream buy, or it might turn out to be a nightmare. Back Stage with Sharni Artists Direct slipped back stage and had a chat with Sharni Crowson. Sharni entertains in venues all along the Costa Blanca South & North. There cannot be many who have not seen this charismatic singer. Performing her Diva Songbook, along with many other great songs, she performs hits by Barbara Streisand, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Dusty Springfield. Sharni is a professional singer and entertainer with a fairly full diary, only two dates still up for grabs between

now and Christmas barring any last minute cancellations. Sharni began singing with formal operatic lessons as a young child then diversifying into the band scene at the age of fourteen. The best of both worlds for this special lady then, formal training and a rock n roll band. Sharni has never done anything else other than entertain people – it’s all she ever wanted to do and she still has her dream job. Pretty incredible. Over the years there have been many great artists that have influenced her but the overriding influence has always been Whitney Houston. When we asked her if she ever suffered stage fright – first there was a small shy giggle and then she told us that she always got nervous before a gig, she sees it as a sign that she wants to perform well and entertain her audiences. Breaking into laughter she admits to a small Bacardi and coke light beforehand, to settle the butterflies, just the one though. Sharni has been performing since 1987 so in all that time, does she have one great moment that really sticks out? ”Oh Yes!” she said, her proudest moment was being asked by the entertainments executive of the Rank Organisation Haven- Warner, at Butlins Group to stop singing in the resident bands, as I was better than their visiting cabarets acts and that I really should think about swapping to cabaret and solo work , as it was causing them a problem. The band should not be better than the cabaret; I think we got that a bit wrong, it was very flattering nonetheless. Obviously being on stage day in day out there must have been some disasters in your career anything spring to mind? “Yes, my worst moment was this year, thinking I had nodules on my vocal chords as I was losing my voice at the end of every night. Turns out I was just hurting my throat by drinking cold water when I had started to sing, and needed to drink warm water, as soon as the voice is active. It works a treat. No more problems”. We then asked Sharni to draw on all her years in showbiz and tell us through her eyes what would be the

best piece of advice she could give to any wannabees or budding performers. Never ever get an ego she said, keep grounded. There is nothing worse than an act that tells everyone how good they are. Be humble, if you are good, others will do it for you. Finally we asked her to recall any funny or amusing moments that have happened over the years that still make her smile, eyes alight she tells us: “I was asked out on a date during a gig by a very famous footballer, who played for England. I turned him down. When I think about it now, it was a very wise thing to do!”

AFTER HOURS AT The Porter House Tell us about yourselves My name is Linda and I run the Porter House bar, Altos del Limonar along with my husband Tony and daughter Katie. We have been here for more than 8 years now. We are originally from Dublin, Ireland, and I did a lot of bar work there over the years before we came to Spain. What made you open a bar? The bar was originally opened and run by my uncle and I used to help out there when I could, although I was also working in another bar at the time. About 8 years ago he decided to return to Ireland for health reasons so Tony and I took it over, and have been here ever since. Where did the inspiration for the name

come from? That’s an easy one…’porter’ is another word for ‘stout’, meaning ‘Guinness.’ Therefore we are ‘The House of Guinness.’ Who does the cooking? And how would you describe your style? My daughter Katie does a lot of the cooking as does Sonia, one of my excellent staff. There again sometimes I do it myself. We like to serve up a combination of classic All day English breakfasts and good traditional Irish food…cabbage and bacon is an Emerald Isle favourite. We serve straight forward food, but plenty of it like the Big Burger we do, huge thing – must be a half pounder with absolutely everything on it and a soft drink included in the price. What’s your favourite dish on the menu? My personal favourite is the good old Sunday roast. Favourite day of the week? Any day when there is music. We have karaoke several nights a week, even in the winter, with different

presenters so there’s always variety in that sense. Of course there’s even more variety with the many different singers who take part. However I have to say that my favourite time of all is Saturday afternoon when we have our jam session. Our jam has a more laidback feel as it is an acoustic jam featuring acoustic guitar, banjo and, of course, singers. It is much more like the traditional jam sessions I remember back in Ireland, everyone is welcome, anyone can get up join in and we provide free food for everyone that comes along. We have Phil keeping everything together in his own relaxed style. It is often a pleasant new experience for people who may have previously only sang on the karaoke to sing with real live musicians. Any interesting tales? One wild karaoke night we had two male karaoke presenters who had gotten up together to sing ‘Sex Bomb’ by Tom Jones and had decided to strip to the waist. This was fine but then halfway

through the song a lady in the audience got up and started rubbing baby oil all over their naked upper bodies. God knows where the baby oil came from. She loved it, they loved it and so did all the other people in the bar. It was totally appropriate for the song and a great time was had by all. I laugh out loud every time I hear that song now. Do-It-Yourself Manicure Make the curve blunt and don’t file your nails into sharp points. 3. In a rotating motion use your thumb to massage cuticle cream into the rough skin at the sides and base of the nails. 4. Soak your nails in warm water for a few minutes to soften the cuticle. Clean your nails thoroughly using a nailbrush. 5. Wrap the end of the orangewood stick in cotton and apply cuticle remover to the blunt end. Use it to loosen dead skin from around the nails.

Your hands are as obvious as any part of your body; you use them to emphasize points in a conversation and to do daily tasks, therefore they should look as well groomed as the rest of you. A good manicure is important to your appearance. Whether or not you use polish, your nails should be conservative, healthy, and always well manicured. To keep your hands attractive give yourself a weekly manicure. Set aside about a half hour and have the following items before you start: emery board, cuticle scissors, nail buffer, a bowl of warm water, polish remover, nail brush,

orangewood stick, cotton balls, base coat or nail hardener, nail polish and top coat. 1. Remove old polish with a cotton ball dampened with nail polish remover. Press the cotton ball firmly to the nail and hold for a few seconds. Pull the cotton ball down the centre so the polish doesn’t smear on the skin around the nail. Use a clean cotton ball to remove any stubborn polish. 2. Holding it on a slant, use an emery board to shape nails. Use long strokes in one direction toward the centre of the nail (don’t go back and forth). Don’t file the nails away at the corners because it weakens the nails.

6. Use scissors on hangnails only. Never cut cuticles. 7. Make sure your nails are free from polish and are clean and dry. If you don’t wear polish, simply buff your nails lightly lengthwise from the base to the tip and you’re finished. 8. Wipe nails again with polish remover to make sure you get rid of any traces of oil moisture or soap. 9. For normal nails apply a clear base coat to the entire surface of each nail. If you have problem nails use nail hardener

instead. 10. Apply nail polish using 3 strokes, one from the centre base to the tip and one on each side. Use only enough polish to do one nail at a time. Don’t redo while wet. 11. When the first coat is completely dry (about ten minutes) apply a second coat. 12. Finish with a coat of sealer for added protection and allow to dry for at least 30 minutes. Avoid contact with water until nails are completely dry.

Drink Tomato Juice for Healthy Bones Milk’s not the only drink that builds healthy bones. According to new research published in the journal Osteoporosis International, drinking tomato juice reduces the risk of osteoporosis too. The Power of Lycopenes in Tomatoes When researchers gave sixty post-menopausal women tomato juice, a lycopene supplement, a combination of the two, or a placebo for four months, they made some interesting observations. The women who received the lycopene supplement, the tomato juice, or a combination of the two had significant increases in the amount of lycopene in their blood. This isn’t surprising since the women were drinking tomato juice or taking a lycopene supplement. What’s more interesting is the women who drank tomato juice or took the lycopene in supplement form had lower

markers for bone breakdown in their blood as well as greater antioxidant capacity. These factors are both important for healthy bones and for reducing the risk of osteoporosis. Prior to giving them lycopene supplements or tomato juice, the women were asked to avoid eating any tomato products for thirty days. During this time, they found a chemical in their blood stream that serves as a marker for bone breakdown — more evidence that lycopene is important for healthy bones. Lycopenes in Tomatoes: How

Much Do You Need for Healthy Bones? According to this study, drinking two glasses of tomato juice a day can improve bone health and reduce the risk of osteoporosis. What about eating raw tomatoes? This wouldn’t necessarily have the same benefit. Lycopene are most readily absorbed when they’re processed, so tomato juice, tomato sauce and ketchup are better sources than raw tomatoes. Kidney stones, one of the most painful of the urologic disorders, have beset humans for centuries. Scientists have found evidence of kidney stones in a 7,000-year-old Egyptian mummy. A person with a family history of kidney stones may be more likely to develop stones. Urinary tract infections, kidney disorders such as cystic kidney diseases, and certain metabolic disorders such as hyperparathyroidism are also linked to stone formation. People who develop painful kidney stones are at high risk of getting them again. Yet, a study carried out in Texas, USA, showed a daily glass of orange juice could keep them at bay. The juice contains citrate, a chemical that helps to prevent the stones from forming. In the study, researchers compared the effects of orange juice and lemonade in preventing recurrent kidney stones. Both juices contain comparable citrate levels. Thirteen volunteers, some with a history of kidney stones and some

without, participated in the three-phase study. In random order, the participants drank approximately 13 ounces of either distilled water, orange juice, or lemonade three times a day with meals for one week, with a three-week interval before moving to the next phase. They also followed a special diet as recommended for preventing recurrent kidney stones. The results showed that orange juice increased levels of citrate in the urine and decreased urine acidity, which reduced the risk of kidney stones. But lemonade did not have the same effect. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Orange juice could potentially play an important role in the management of kidney stone disease and may be considered an option for patients who are intolerant of potassium citrate,â&#x20AC;? says researcher Clarita Odvina, MD, assistant professor of internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, in a news release.

History of Spanish Food The succession of cultures that one-by-one set foot on the Iberian peninsula have each left a lasting mark on every facet of Spain's culture: language, music, art, architecture and, of course, food. In fact, many people are surprised to learn just how much of a delicious melting pot Spain really is. Geography of Spanish Food The basis of the history of Spanish food of course has to do with its geographical situation. First of all, the country is located on the Iberian Peninsula and is therefore almost entirely surrounded by the waters. Naturally, due to this fortunate location, seafood forms one of the pillars of Spain's gastronomy and categorizes the country as having a Mediterranean diet. The rest of Spain is a diverse terrain made up of mountain ranges, lush pastures, fertile farm grounds, extensive coastlines and more, which together provide quite the variety of fresh products. For example, Spain's famous hams are cured high in the mountains, vineyards and olive groves sprawl across expanses of land, and fresh fruits and vegetables hail from throughout the country. Cultures Throughout the History of Spanish Food Endless cultures, as they passed through or settled in Spain, have influenced the history of Spanish food. The

Phoenicians left their sauces, the Greeks introduced Spain to the wonders of olive oil, and Romans, Carthaginians, and Jews integrated elements of their own cooking into that of Spain. However it was the Moors who, during their centuries of reign, most impacted Spanish gastronomy. They introduced fruits and light seasonings into the Iberian diet, as well as combinations of fruits and nuts with meats and fish.

Spanish Eating Customs Meals A normal day's breakfast- or desayuno- typically consists merely of a cup of coffee, although it's also commonplace to accompany your steaming café con leche with a croissant or other pastry. While an American traditional breakfast has pancakes, bacon, and eggs, the Spanish "traditional" breakfast consists of the vastly popular churros, served sprinkled with sugar or dunked in hot chocolate.

Spaniards eat their lunch, or comida, between 2:00 and 4:00 in the afternoon. Serving as the day's main meal, it is traditionally quite a bit larger than the dinner meal, or cena. A typical lunch will have several courses. The first course is the lighter part of the meal, usually consisting of a salad or soup, while the second course is normally your typical fish or meat dish. A dessert can be a simple piece of fruit, a typical Spanish flan, or a sweet pastry or cake. While there are of course many people who eat full meals, the Spanish dinner (cena) is traditionally much

smaller than the midday comida. It often consisting of something lighter like a salad, a sandwich, or a selection of tapas. Spaniards eat late for this final meal of the dayeven more so on weekends and during the summersitting down to eat anytime from 9:00 until 11:00 in the evening. Tapas A tradition begun long ago in the southern city of Seville, Spaniards have since perfected the art of snacking. Going out for tapas consists of travelling from bar to bar and sharing plates of the bars' specialties with a small group of friends. Learn more about tapas! Sobremesa The name says it all. The word sobremesa literally means "over the table" and refers to the art of conversation after a meal. Instead of taking the last bite and leaving, Spaniards often stay at the table

conversing, savoring each other's company, and perhaps sharing a drink. If good conversation ensues, be prepared to stay for hours!

Siesta No, it's not a myth. Yes, the infamous siesta really does exist. It began long ago as after eating the large mid-day meal farmworkers needed to rest and digest before going back out to work the fields. While this daily break doesn't necessarily include a nap, businesses and stores do shut down for about two hours and many people return home to eat with their families. Wine Whether out at a restaurant or in the home with the family, it is very typical to drink wine along with a meal.

So common, in fact, that restaurants offering a menú almost always include wine in the advertised price. Coffee Coffee is quite the Spanish phenomenon. Many Spaniards drink several cups of their favorite caffeinated beverage in the course of a single day. Coffee also traditionally follows a Spanish meal and is served after the dessert. To fit in with the locals, ask for a café con leche (coffee with milk), a café solo (coffee without milk), or a café cortado (coffee with some milk). Tipping While its practice is completely voluntary, many restaurant patrons choose to leave a modest tip of around 5-10% after a meal.

Ultimate veggie burger Parmesan spring chicken with pickled carrot slaw A low-fat veggie burger made with sweet potato, quinoa and mushrooms - a change from the standard vegetarian bean burger - make your barbecue menu stand out! Ingredients • 2 tsp vegetable oil, plus extra for frying • 1 small onion, diced • 2 garlic cloves, chopped • 2 large Portobello mushrooms, finely chopped • 2 small sweet potatoes, peeled and diced • 150g cooked quinoa • 1 large beetroot, grated • 1 egg, beaten • 2 tbsp chopped coriander • zest 2 limes • 4 tbsp plain flour, plus extra for dusting For the carrot slaw • 1 large carrot, thinly shredded • 2 tbsp rice wine vinegar • 1 tsp golden caster sugar To serve • 2 tbsp mayonnaise • 1 tbsp chilli sauce • 4 burger buns, lightly toasted • 2 handfuls rocket or spinach leaves Method 1. In a medium frying pan, heat 2 tsp vegetable oil. Add the onion, garlic and mushrooms, season and fry until everything is soft, about 5 mins. Put the sweet potatoes in a microwaveable bowl, cover with cling film and microwave on high for 5-6 mins until soft. Mash the sweet potatoes, then add to

the pan with the onion mix. Tip into a large mixing bowl and leave to cool. 2. Add the quinoa, beetroot, egg, coriander, lime zest, flour and some seasoning. Mix with your hands, then form into four large burgers. Sprinkle with flour and chill for 30 mins to firm up. 3. Put the carrots in a small bowl with the vinegar, sugar and 1 tsp salt. Cover and leave to pickle until ready to eat. Mix the mayonnaise with the chilli sauce. 4. Heat a frying pan and pour in a thin coating of oil. Fry the burgers on a medium-low heat to allow the centre to cook slowly. When browned, after about 7 mins, gently flip over and cook for the same time on the other side. Drain the pickled carrots and toast the buns. 5. Brush the buns with the chilli mayo. Layer on the spinach or rocket, burgers and the carrot slaw.

Ingredients • 1 egg white • 5 tbsp finely grated Parmesan • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breast • 400g new potato, cut into small cubes • 140g frozen pea • good handful baby spinach leaves • 1 tbsp white wine vinegar • 2 tsp olive oil Method 1. Heat grill to medium and line the grill pan with foil. Beat the egg white on a plate with a little salt and pepper. Tip the Parmesan onto another plate. Dip the chicken first in egg white, then the cheese. Grill the coated chicken for 10-12 mins, turning once until browned and crisp. 2. Meanwhile, boil the potatoes for 10 mins, adding the peas for the final 3 mins, then drain. Toss the vegetables with the spinach leaves, vinegar, oil and seasoning to taste. Divide between four warm plates, then serve with the chicken.

DGT get tough More than 25,000 instances were recorded for speed, seat belt, drugs, alcohol and lack of maintenance of the vehicle among the most frequent violations. Within a week, 14,603 drivers have been reported for speeding and 1,339 people have been detected circulating without using the seat belt, of which 56 were minors. More than 1,000 vehicles have been detected circulating with significant technical deficiencies. 36 of them were

The Oppenheimer Blue record at auction The Oppenheimer Blue is a 14.62-carat (2.924 g) vivid blue diamond that in May 2016 became the most expensive jewel ever sold at auction. The diamond was named for its previous owner Philip Oppenheimer. It is cut into a rectangle and is set into a ring designed by Fulco di Verdura.[3] The Oppenheimer Blue is the largest fancy vivid blue diamond classified by the Gemological Institute of America ever sold at auction; it sold at Christie's in Geneva in May 2016 for US$ 50.6million (GBP 34.7m;). Two telephone bidders had competed for the diamond; the identity of the purchaser is not publicly known. Prior to the sale, the auction house said: The Oppenheimer Blue — a ‘legendary’ diamond. The Oppenheimer Blue is set to be the largest Vivid Blue diamond ever to appear at auction. François Curiel, Chairman of Christie’s Asia Pacific and China, shares its story: ‘During my 47 years at Christie’s, I’ve been lucky enough to have handled and auctioned some of the world’s most legendary blue diamonds,’ says François Curiel, introducing the exceptional Oppenheimer Blue, which, at 14.62 carats, is the largest Vivid Blue ever to come to auction, set to star in Christie's Magnificent Jewels auction on 18 May in Geneva. The Oppenheimer Blue was named in honour of a very special connoisseur — its previous owner, Sir Philip Oppenheimer,’ continues Curiel. ‘The Oppenheimers have been leaders in the diamond industry for generations and Sir Philip could have had any diamond he wanted. But he chose this one, with its perfect hue, impeccable

proportions and fabulous rectangular shape.’ The Oppenheimer Blue diamond is the latest in a line of historic blue diamonds that have been auctioned at Christie’s. These include the Tereshchenko in 1984, the Wittelsbach Blue in 2008, the Begum Blue in 1995, and a blue-diamond ring owned by Marie-Antoinette which was auctioned in 1983. Curiel notes the coveted nature of such rare gems: ‘Blue diamonds have gained a wider following, not only because they are stunning, but because there are so few of them available in the world.’ The exceptional diamond is classified as a Vivid Blue, emphasised by its classical emerald cut. ‘The Oppenheimer Blue can only be described as one of the rarest gems in the world,’ says Curiel. ‘It is the gem of gems.’

Because of the peculiarities that conventional roads, overtaking, road crossings or passing priorities are especially controlled. For a week, 318 drivers were caught for faulty overtaking and other 265 skipping a stop sign or yield sign. The ageing fleet in Spain and the lack of maintenance of them, make road vehicles circulating technical deficiencies that pose a risk to road safety. Within a week, 1,049 drivers were reported for driving vehicles with significant technical deficiencies, 36 of them were immobilized by technical deficiencies that made it impossible to continue the journey. 1,225 drivers have been denounced for lacking or having incorrect documentation relating to the vehicle, in most cases not having the last ITV, and 668 drivers for lacking such documentation as a correct driver's licence.

Volkswagen clings on to top sales spot in Europe Volkswagen has held on to its spot as the biggest selling carmaker in a resurgent European car market in the first third of 2016, according to industry experts JATO Dynamics, despite the emissions scandal and lack of a small SUV. Although there was some nervousness at the start of 2016 about wider economic weakness hitting the region in the latter part of the year, Europe’s ‘Big 5’ markets – Germany, UK, France, Spain and Italy – showed increases totalling 8.5%, with 3.85 million cars sold. However, Felipe Munoz, global automotive analyst at JATO Dynamics, warned the growth could not continue: ‘While Germany, France and the UK are reaching their sales peak, further growth is expected in Italy and Spain.’ Can it continue to hold that position? Volkswagen continues to hold on to its dominant overall position mainly due to the Golf and Polo, but the dearth of any SUV smaller than the Tiguan is hitting its share, and affecting sales at other VW group brands. Munoz continued: ‘VW Group keeps the lead but its growth was half the increase posted by total market. Therefore it was the car manufacturer to lose the biggest market share. The main reason for this is Volkswagen brand, which didn’t grow and counted for 49% of the group’s registrations. ‘However Audi, Porsche and Skoda helped to offset that result. VW Group volume is not aligned to the industry in terms of segments. SUVs counted only for

14% of its total, and their registrations grew by 6.6%, while these vehicles represented almost 25% of the five market’s registrations, and their volume increased by 24%. At the same time the compact cars registrations from the group grew by only 1.4% over Jan-Apr 2015.’ What’s enjoying success at the moment? For firms such as Renault offering small SUVs, the picture is very healthy: the Captur become the biggestselling SUV in April, having overtaken the Nissan Qashqai. And of the 20 cars seeing the largest leaps in market share, 11 of them were SUVs, and at brands across the price spectrum – from the Fiat 500X to the Mercedes-Benz GLC. A company that doesn’t always get it right, but seems

to have hit a sweet spot, is Fiat-Chrysler. SUVs are a big driver of growth for FCA. One year ago they counted for 14% of its registrations, while during the first four months of 2016, the Jeep range and the Fiat 500X counted for 20.5%, posting an outstanding growth of 67% in terms of volume, assodring to JATO. For the first time European car sale history, SUVs led the way in 2015, outselling the traditional segments and posting an increase of 24% at 3.2 million units, while within that figure small SUVs hit the million mark. And while the rate of growth will slow, it shows no sign losing its dominant position: the percentage of SUVs sold in Europe compared with total car sales has grown from 6 per cent in 2005 to 23 per cent in 2015, and is expected to increase to 27 per cent by 2020, according to industry sales analyst IHS Automotive. What’s next? Other brands within the Volkswagen Group are following FCA and Renault and busy unwrapping SUVs of various sizes in new sectors. This year sees the Audi Q2, Seat Ateca and Skoda Kodiaq, while a smaller SEAT SUV will debut at Martorell next year. However, Volkswagen is still two years away from a production version of a car along the lines of the T-Cross Breeze concept shown in Geneva this year, while two further SUVs will join the Tiguan and Touareg in the stable at an as-yet unspecified later date. Volkswagen - and its dealers who must be seeing custom head to brands offering small SUVs - will hope it can hang on until then.

Original VW Beetle for sale with just 56 miles from new

A CLASSIC Volkswagen Beetle that has covered just 56 miles from new is to be sold at a Danish auction later this month. The 42-year-old car, in almost as-new condition after a light recommissioning, has only had one elderly owner who spent four years accruing the meagre mileage before being retired to a barn where it remained until being found. Silverstone Auctions is to host the sale at its Classic Race Aarhus Auction in Denmark over the weekend of May 2829. Armando Sgroi, a deeply religious old man, had never wanted a car but eventually found himself unable to continue walking to and from his church

on a Sunday. The Beetle served as his transport for the short distance. With 90km on the clock, it must be one of the lowest-mileage examples in the world, and possibly the lowest-mileage example outside of museum ownership. Special edition Mini set for Festival of Speed unveil

A SPECIAL-EDITION Mini harking back to the very first of its ancestors will début at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed, the company has announced. The Mini Seven, named in reference to the Austin Seven, which was the very first Mini, will fuse classic heritage with modern design and technology. Outside and in the Seven gets a bespoke design, but few details have yet been released. What we do know is that there will be a model-specific options package called Seven Chili. The car will take part in the Moving Motorshow at the Festival of Speed; a long line of cars running the famous

hillclimb course from bottom to top, one at a time over the course of a few hours. Mini is also set to send the new John Cooper Works Challenge Edition up the 1.16mile course, while parent company the BMW Group acts as main sponsor – or Honoured Marque, in Goodwood speak. Another Mini highlight is the All4 Racing car, which completed the Dakar rally this year in the hands of Harry Hunt, who will pilot the mighty machine up the hill. The Festival of Speed runs from June 23-26 and features cars and activities from a huge range of manufacturers, and has in some ways become the de facto British Motor Show.

Electric cars to be auctioned... at 110 years old TWO ELECTRIC cars from '06 and '07 are up for sale, but these two are a bit special. They're more than 100 years old. The 1906 Pope Waverley Victoria Phaeton and the 1907 Victor High Wheel Electric Runabout are to be sold by Historics at Brooklands in June, and while electric cars might be held as the future of private transport they also have an important place in its past. There were over 100 different car manufacturers making cars powered by batteries in the early 20th century. The Victoria Phaeton, offered by Historics at an estimate of £30,000-£40,000, sold at the time of its build in Nebraska for some $1,600, and is notable for its supreme presentation. Fully restored and elegant in the extreme, the convertible features a leather-lined hood, with the additional sumptuous comfort of complementary leg covers. It seats two on the floral print bench seat with a rear-facing third perch for occasional use. It's steered by tiller – like a boat – and features electric coach

lamps for driving in the dark. It has been upgraded to modern batteries, which give it, say the sellers, 'a very usable range'. The very compact 1907 Victor High Wheel Runabout, built one year later in Indianapolis, spent many years on display in an American Museum before being imported to the UK, when it was the subject of a complete sympathetic overhaul. This included the fitment of

contemporary batteries and charging system, and a recent repaint of both the chassis and bodywork, together with black leather upholstery and far from rudimentary patent leather mudguards to protect its inhabitants. As is the case of the Pope Waverley, vision is superb from the high driving position. In common with the 1906 Pope Waverley, much interest in this equally rare and soughtafter Victor is anticipated at its estimate of £30,000-£40,000. Weird Wide Web Mysterious ‘Ghost’ Voice Turns Out To Be This Guy In The Chimney Do your friends, family and/or significant other make fun of you when you’re freaked out by odd sounds in the night? Show them this story. Brad Sapp thought he heard a mysterious voice whisper, “Get out of here,” in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, when he was sorting cans at the redemption center he owns in Carroll, Iowa, the Daily Times Herald reports. “I honestly thought I was going crazy,” Sapp told The Huffington Post, explaining that he looked all over for the source of the voice. His wife, Carrie, teased him that the voice must have been a ghost. But nine hours later, around 10 a.m., she received a scare of her own when she heard a man yelling for help inside the center’s chimney. This guy, to be exact: Oh, he was also naked. The man, later identified as 29-yearold Jordan Kajewski, called out, “I’m in the chimney,” while the couple was trying to figure out what Sapp had heard earlier. He said his wife thought the voice was his at first, but she realized what was really going on when Kajewski said again, “I’m in the chimney!” Kajewski told them he fell in while

playing hide and seek, but Sapp didn’t quite buy it. He accused the man of trying to break into the redemption center. Sapp stuck by his hide-and-seek story. The couple called 911, and rescue workers were able to get Kajewski out. He was then arrested on trespassing charges, according to the Times Herald. Sapp said he has no clue why Kajewski was naked, though the man did have some clothes with him. The chimney doesn’t seem wide enough for someone to undress inside, which means that Kajewski likely took off his clothes before entering. Though they weren’t exactly wellacquainted, Sapp said he had met Kajewski when the man came in on a few previous occasions to ask for a job. Sapp wasn’t hiring.

Wristband Is Shocking Way To Control Spending A bracelet that gives its wearer an electric shock when they go overdrawn is being launched. The idea is that the Pavlok wristband will be wired up to an online bank account so that, when the user goes overdrawn beyond pre-set spending limits, they will be given a 255-volt shock. The plan is worked out in four stages starting with the customer logging into their credit card or bank account facility. They then connect the device and set a spending limit. When users get near their selfimposed limit, a notification will be sent to their phone. If they go on spending regardless, the wristband moves into shock mode. The shock is reported to be "slightly uncomfortable", rather than painful, says Intelligent Environments, the company that provides the connection between the device and the banking sites. It emphasises it has been tested fully and is safe. The bracelet is expected to be particularly appealing to the youth market with parents and partners particularly expressing an interest on their beloved's behalf. "We've had lots of interest from 'concerned others'," an IE spokeswoman

said. "Quite a few have said they want to get one for their daughter, or wife!" Managing director David Webber was quoted as saying: "My daughter and other people we've spoken to who are under 25 think it's brilliant. "There's probably a novelty value as well." The wristband was launched in 2014 by a US internet business intended for use as a way of shocking people out of bad habits, such as smoking or nailbiting. It was based on the experiment conducted by Russian psychologist Ivan Pavlov with dogs which found that the dogs - and in this case people - can be trained to behave in certain ways through reward or punishment.

A Taiwanese zoo has released a "proof of life" photo of one of its giant pandas to counter rumours it had died. Tuan Tuan is pictured behind bars with newspapers laid out in front of him to prove what day it is. Taipei Zoo said 11-year-old Tuan Tuan, his partner Yuan Yuan and their cub Tuan Zai were all fine. "We welcome everyone to visit them at the zoo," said its director Chin Shihchien.

China's official Communist Party paper, Global Times, had reported that Tuan Tuan had died of canine distemper. The story soon spread like fastgrowing bamboo across the Chinesespeaking internet. The paper later retracted its story and apologised for not checking its facts. The death of the politically sensitive panda, a present to Taiwan from China, may have had deep diplomatic implications. Beijing has often used gifts of giant pandas, which only exist in the wild in China, to make political statements. China claims that Taiwan, which is quasi-independent and self-governing, is part of its territory. Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan were sent to Taiwan in December 2008 following the election of China-friendly President Ma Ying-jeou as the island's leader. Their combined names - Tuan Yuan mean "Reunion". Rumours of Tuan Tuan's death emerged days before the inauguration of Mr Ma's successor, Tsai Ing-wen, whose party supports Taiwan's formal independence from China.

Barbero's mother told WTEN she thinks the vaporizer's battery exploded. "The battery had exploded inside and everything shot out...went into his mouth and burned everything," she said. When it comes to vaping accidents, these explosions seem to be a common thread: Earlier in May, an Alabama teen was burned after a classmate's ecigarette exploded and sent a hot battery flying into his face. In February 2016, dramatic gas station security footage showed a man's leg being engulfed by flames, an apparent result of another ecigarette explosion. Fifty years ago, on January 17, 1966, there was a midair collision over the Mediterranean close to the town of Palomares, Almeria. An American Air Force plane and a refuelling jet tanker crashed in mid-air but while four of the eleven airmen who managed to parachute away from the accident were easily found, the cargo proved more elusive. The plane had been carrying thermonuclear bombs—unarmed and protected, but nuclear weapons nonetheless—and only three of the four that fell could be located. Hundreds of American and Spanish workers combed the area over which the crash had occurred, but with no luck. One bomb was missing.

It was not until St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 1966, that the missing hydrogen bomb was finally recovered, 2,500 ft. underwater off the coast near Palomares, by a submarine nicknamed Alvin, which was kitted out with underwater cameras and a claw capable of lifting objects from the seabed. “The discovery was a fantastic mixture of technical skill and luck. It matched finding a needle in a haystack—or ‘perhaps in a hayfield,” as one official put it,” TIME noted the following week. “For all the tips from fishermen and experts’ calculations, the bomb could have landed just about anywhere over an area of scores of square miles, and the parachute could have acted as a sea anchor in the swift coastal cur rents, tugging the bomb into less accessible depths. Then, too, the sea floor’s shifting mud might have ultimately hidden the bomb from view.” Within a few weeks, the Navy managed to haul up the bomb, which weighed over a ton. As TIME reported, the once-hush-hush operation was suddenly a media frenzy: However the aeroplane crashed on land containing tree of bombs and 50 years later that land still registers some radioactive activity. However, the land is farmed nevertheless, but that's another story. In October Spain

and the United States signed a deal to discuss the cleanup and removal of land contaminated with radioactivity after the mid-air collision in 1966 dumped the four US hydrogen bombs near the southern Spanish village of Palomares. It's hoped that after a new Government is sworn in, after the new Spanish National Elections of June 26th, that under a statement of intent signed by Spain's foreign minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo and US Secretary of State John Kerry, the two countries will negotiate a binding agreement to further restore and clear up the Palomares site and arrange for the disposal of the contaminated soil at an appropriate site in the United States. The bombs were released on January 17 1966, when a US B-52 bomber and a refuelling plane crashed into each other during a routine refuelling operation, killing seven of 11 crew members. There were no fatalities on the ground. None of the bombs exploded, but the plutonium-filled detonators on two went off, strewing highly radioactive plutonium 239 across the landscape around the south-eastern town. The accident occurred at the height of the Cold War when it was US policy to keep nuclear-armed warplanes in the air constantly near the Soviet border. The statement said that immediately following the accident both countries set about securing the area, removing contaminated soil and decontaminating the land. It said that they have since been monitoring and analysing contamination levels.

It's expected that the radioactive contaminated soil will be distributed in Nevada. Back in March 1966, not surprisingly, the U.S. was eager to show off the nuke, to prove at least that the Costa Bomba, as they were being called, was demonstrably safe for tourists—in addition to rebutting in advance any anti-propaganda insinuations from Moscow that the recovery operation was all a big hoax. As it was, the H-bomb’s debut was about as impressive as a Halloween Firework display during a thunderstorm and nothing much more than a damp squid. Its size and mega tonnage were not announced, and technicians carefully covered all revealing parts with masking tape. What Spanish officials and 80 newsmen got to see on the Petrel’s fantail—from 100 ft. away —was a slightly dented, porpoise-shaped, silver-coloured tube about 10 ft. long. Just the way it looked in the James Bond film of the same era, Thunderball. But, though the missing explosive was a scary idea, the easily discovered bombs needed just as much worrying about.

Two of the three bombs that had been quickly retrieved had not actually made it through the crash unharmed, and radioactive material had made it out of their shell casings. The U.S. transported contaminated topsoil back to a nuclear-waste disposal site in the states. Officials rushed to assure potential tourists that the area was safe, but the taint on the coastal region remained. Three years later, TIME would report that neighbouring villages would no longer buy produce from Palomares, and that half of the town’s already small population had decided to move away. As it turned out, fears about the area’s latent radiation were justified. Later tests revealed that the earth around Palomares was still contaminated—and it was just last October that the U.S. and Spain `finalized an agreement to clean it up once and for all.

Two out of every three deaths in traffic accidents occur on conventional roads Last week a new driver awareness campaign was launched by the Department of Transportation, the DGT, to draw attention to the peculiarities that conventional roads offer compared to major roads throughout the country. The campaign hoped to raise awareness among different users and show the need for proper and safe driving behaviour. Head-on collisions are the most common types of accidents on these roads. So far this year, two of every three people died on inter-urban roads, in traffic accidents that occurred on conventional routes. The fatality rate is twice that on motorways and main objective of the DGT to reduce accidents. For this reason, Trafico launched a new surveillance campaign of control and awareness of the risks of traffic on conventional roads. This type of intensive and planned campaign during a specific time period are aimed to draw attention of drivers on the peculiarities that have this type of roads, while raising awareness among different road users of the need for a correct and safe driving behaviour. During the campaign, officers of the Trafico of the Guardia Civil will be verifying speed limits on roads, making sure that overtaking is performed correctly, and that drivers are within limits of drugs and alcohol, that the use of helmets and restraint systems is made and the documentation of both the driver and the vehicle is correct. The goal is to work towards a zero fatality record on conventional road. In addition to roadside monitoring, they will also be conducting checks from the air with helicopters available to the DGT, including using the Pegasus system to check on driver behaviour

from the air. Last week's campaign will be followed by others throughout the year. Some of the reasons that lead the DGT to periodically conduct intensive campaigns on conventional roads are: of the 1,688 people who died in road accidents in 2014 (the last year with consolidated data for 30 days) 957 were in an accident that took place on a conventional road (roads that do not have a centre median and only have one lane in each direction). To these 957 deaths must be added the 3,813 serious injuries that occurred on secondary roads. Secondary roads are less secure and many have poor road surfaces and as there are many hilly sections, curves and poor sight lines, it is necessary in all situations to drive carefully to decrease the risk of accident. Of the 24,367 injury accidents that occurred on these roads, 9,531 were away from main roads. Of the 957 people who died on conventional roads, 348 they were in accidents whose vehicle left the road; 197 in frontal collisions and 81 people were run over. Of the more than 166,000 kilometres of intercity roads computed by

the Ministry of Development, more than 149,000 correspond to conventional roads. The rate of deaths and serious injuries show a correlation with the age of the vehicle. In the event that the accident occurs in conventional road, vehicle age turns out to be a determinant for the degree of harm suffered to victims in other ways. In order to know the points where accidents occur and identify their causes and to seek possible alternatives, each year Trafico prepares a list of sections called black spots from the information gathered of traffic accidents with victims. In 2014, 509 black spots were noted where there were 2,183 accidents in which 24 people died accounting for 2.5% of total deaths. They have also identified sections of the most dangerous conventional roads and where Guardia Civil Trafico is intensifying surveillance with the idea that drivers will use extreme precautions and follow the rules when driving on them. The latest update of the dangerous road sections was held on April 29th, where 1,331 sections were identified and whose exact location can be found on the official website at www.dgt.es. In addition, in the coming months as announced last week, the Minister of the Interior, will develop a series of activities aimed at curbing accidents in conventional routes, where traffic has the powers of surveillance, such as limiting the areas of overtaking on certain sections of conventional roads; installing barriers and the central separation of lanes; the installation of preventive dynamic signalling (luminous) warning crossing at dangerous intersections or installing warning signs about pedestrians in areas that are frequented by them.

Police injured during car chase Two Guardia Civil policemen were injured over the weekend after a spectacular car chase through the streets of Torrevieja culminated in an accident that possibly wrote off two patrol cars of the Meritorious at the intersection of Calle Maria Parodi and Caballero de Rodas, in the centre of Torrevieja. Subsequently, after the driver being chased took flight, a search mission was put in place throughout the city. The driver being chased was eventually arrested in Calle Corvette, near Playa de los Locos, in which, apparently, is his residence. The fugitive was accompanied by another man, who was also arrested in the house. The spectacular accident occurred between the two cars of the Guardia Civil at about four in the afternoon, when they were trying to cut off a vehicle that had previously avoided being stopped. As a result of the accident, apparently an officer suffered a slight neck injury and another received several bruises, before being transferred to the Hospital of Torrevieja, where they received medical

assistance. After the violent crash between the two patrol cars, one of the cars ended up being embedded into a lamppost and the other against a column of a local business establishment, on the corner at the intersection of the streets. Both have significant damage to the frontal area of their cars. The chase began when officers recognised a driver who had an arrest warrant for robberies and they fled. Several patrols of the Guardia Civil joined the search for the two men at which time the suspect's car blew a tire. The fugitive fled the car at the intersection of Calle Maria Parodi with Blasco Iba単ez and escaped on foot, before being stopped in the vicinity of Los Locos beach. The events that occurred in the centre of Torrevieja, aroused the curiosity of many neighbours and passersby, who did not hesitate in using their mobile phones to capture the event. His weekend also featured another accident when a 16 year old crashed his mother's car and ended up turning the vehicle on its side after colliding with a lamppost.
