Orihuela Promoted in London Last Monday, Sofía Alvarez, from the Orihuela’s Tourism Board, announced that Orihuela will promote the region at London's World Travel Market, one of the most important and influential tourism fairs. During next week's three day exhibition, the Orihuela Tourism Board will promote many of region's diverse options for visitors; monuments, festivals, gastronomy and their most famous writer and poet, Miguel Hernandez. Least we forget the magnificent beaches, eight of which have been awarded Blue Flags by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), five of them with the “Q” (for quality) by the Ministry of Tourism plus five Golf Courses that are highly valued internationally. Overall, the main focus We were contacted last week by a concerned reader who was attending a musical event in Torrevieja, which the Policia Local suddenly appeared at and closed down. He said: “The music Police have been quite this year so I was surprised when they turned up. They had no decibel meter, so I showed them mine which was reading 76db. But they did not want to know and just dismissed me out of hand.” The questions he wanted answered was “Do the Police have to use a decibel meter and if the reading is below 80db, are they still required to close the music down? Also l why don't the Police give the name of the person complaining?”

of the OTB is of becoming the main destination for tour operators attending the fair.

Councillor for Tourism, Sofia Alvarez together with the Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, will attend various meetings with tour operators "especially with those from Scandinavia and Belgium" to publicise Orihuela and its values in order to attract the largest possible number of tourists and to make Orihuela one of the best and most desirable destinations. The presence of Orihuela in the new edition of the World Travel Market, will not incur

any cost to our city coffers because we will go under the umbrella of Alicante Provincial Council and the Generalitat Valenciana.” World Travel Market London will be held at ExCeL London between 7 - 9 November 2016. ExCeL London is an exhibitions and international convention centre located on the northern quay of the Royal Victoria Dock in London Docklands, between Canary Wharf and London City Airport. The Music Police

This is not a new problem in Torrevieja and the Vega Baja. Every year dozens of performances are closed down. The last time we asked, the law was very clear with the Policia Local having a prescribed maximum sound level that must be adhered to and without a special performance license being granted by the Town Hall, the Policia Local are obligated to close a venue's performance down, with only the need of one complaint to do so. If a performance takes place indoors and the premisses have the correct soundproofing, usually double doors and windows, etc, then it’s usually not a problem. If you are doing something outside and it’s electrified or amplified, or the windows are open, then anyone can contact the police and ask them to check the sound levels. Usually if you are over 80db, the police will close you down; there and then or they just pull

To the best of my knowledge: E.U. legislation has set 65 dB as the maximum acceptable limit of noise a person can tolerate on a daily basis, while levels between 70-125 dB can be painful, and the noise becomes unbearable when reaching 140 dB. A typical disco and a motorcycle without muffler may reach 110 and 115 dB, respectively.

the plug. This question has been asked on a yearly basis of the past three mayors in Torrevieja and to date: the law has not changed. In Torrevieja, the public no longer have direct access to the Mayor, for the most part. You or I would have to go to the PROP office and put forward the correct paperwork and request a meeting or an answer to a question. However this is not just an International thing. Spanish pubs and clubs also have the plug pulled on them, so it’s not just an act against the English/International community: an argument that has been put forward by others before. My suggestion, to keep everyone legal, is to go to the PROP office to ask any questions in writing to find out what the maximum decibels allowed are. This must be done in Spanish. Your request for an answer will go to the Councillor in charge who will, in time, give you an answer. However, if the Policia Local arrive at a venue sans Audio Metre, they still have the authority to close you down, so it's a bit of a lose-lose situation.

Every Town Hall in Spain sets their own limits, however the maximum levels are handed down from the Valencian community. Each Town Hall has very specific rules on what is the maximum tolerable noise. These rules are pretty much standardized throughout the country, following the recommendations set by the World Health Organisation. The Town Halls have to act and stop any activity breaching the statutory noise levels. In the first instance the persons causing the nuisance are responsible, however if the Town Hall does not act, it ultimately becomes their responsible. For example the Andalucian Supreme Court ordered the Velez Malaga Town Hall to compensate 18 inhabitants for damages of 5,000,000€ for not acting against a pub emitting noise in excess of 120 dB. Thus, when in doubt and after receiving a complaint, the Policia Local usually arrive with a sound measuring device and if you are playing music that’s amplified and can be heard outside, and you are over the Town Hall’s allowed DB limit, you will be asked to stop the performance. The Town Hall do not wish to be denounced for not taking action and having the sound turned down or off.

A Government At Last

It's official: Spain has a new government led by Mariano Rajoy. It's the same as the old one, except that this time round, they will need the support of other parties in order to get anything done due to being a minority.

Thanks to the fact that the PSOE said they would abstain rather than vote against the PP and force a third election, Mariano Rajoy takes over the leadership of the Country once again. Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, announced on Thursday evening, the names of the ministers that make up his new cabinet. The Prime Minster announced his decision after meeting with the King at the Palacio de la Zarzuela.

Rafael Catala, Minister of Justice. Rafael Catalá Poloicks a lot of the boxes and meets sufficient requirements to be in the new government because he has worked with Mariano Rajoy, Soraya Saenz de Santamaria, with Ana Pastor and even José María Aznar. That is to say, a person of trust of virtually all sectors with power in the PP.

Fatima Báñez, Minister of Employment and Social Security The Labor Reform Act February 2012 will go down in history as the toughest in a long list of labor reforms and she now has been given back the key to complete the most important factor of PP unfinished business: unemployment. Fatima Báñez will do so as she was the minister who started it.

Alfonso Dastis, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. He graduated in law in 1983 entered the diplomatic service in 2004 was named ambassador of Spain in the Netherlands and until December 2011 was COREPER coordinator at the Permanent Representation to the European Union in Brussels. From December 31, 2011 he holds onto the post of Permanent Representative of Spain to the European Union.

Inigo Mendez de Vigo, Minister of Education, Culture and Sports. Inigo Mendez de Vigo is one of the surprises. After half a lifetime dedicated to European affairs, she received a call from Mariano Rajoy in June 2015 to replace the most hated Minister in the government; Jose Ignacio Wert.

Inigo de la Serna, Minister of Public Works. Born January 10, 1971 in Bilbao, in 2007 he was elected mayor of Santander, a position he still holds. He is one of the few conservative aldermen in a provincial capital, along with Malaga, who survived the cull from the municipal election in May 2015.

Luis de Guindos, Minister of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness. Guindos stays in the ministry, as expected.

Cristobal Montoro, Minister for Finance and Public Service. Cristobal Montoro remains the finance minister and he has been longest in office. He has held the portfolio in two stages: the first, with Jose Maria Aznar between 2000 and 2004; and the second with Mariano Rajoy, since 2011.

Alvaro Nadal, Minister of Energy, Tourism And Digital Activities. Until now head of the Cabinet Office, he assumes this newly created ministry. This portfolio previously included the Ministry of Industry. His career runs parallel to that of his twin brother Alberto, who has just served as Secretary of State for Energy in the previous government.

Maria Dolores de Cospedal, defense minister. No. 1 in all the pools of the Government of Mariano Rajoy will become minister of Defence. Dolores de Cospedal was president of Castilla-La Mancha, the old socialist stronghold, between 2011 and 2015, when although she won the election, she lost the government due to a pact between the PSOE and Podemos.

Isabel García Tejerina, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and the Environment. Isabel García Tejerina has practically spent her entire professional life within the Ministry of Agriculture, first as a consultant for Loyola de Palacio and Jesus Posada between 2000 and 2004 and from 2012 to 2014 as general secretary to Agriculture Minister Miguel Arias Canete.

Dolors Montserrat, Minister of Health, Social Services and Equality. Deputy PP spokesman in Congress and Deputy Secretary of Organization of the Popular Party in Catalonia. Born in 1973 in Sant Sadurní D'Anoia (Barcelona), she is Health Minister elect and part of the Catalan share of the new government of Mariano Rajoy.

Those given cabinet posts include: Soraya Saenz de Santamaria, vice president and Minister of the Presidency and Territorial Administration.Saenz de Santamaria is 45 years the most powerful woman of Spain plus one of female politicians with more political influence in Europe. Santamaria comes from a right-wing middle class family of Valladolid. Juan Ignacio Zoido: Interior Minister. Zoido has been given the portfolio of Interior, after losing the post of mayor of Seville in the last municipal elections. A pact between leftist forces ousted the popular leader; one of the most important supporters of Rajoy in Andalusia.

For the last five Years Benijofar International Library has been serving the community and has grown year by year. It’s run by a lovely group of volunteers and is supported by book donations from the public, to whom they generously thank. The library has a new location, but don’t panic becuase it is situated in the same building as before, only upstairs, on the first floor. The Return of The Magnificent Seven to Alicante by Bob Yareham The Magnificent Seven, starring Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen was undoubtedly one of the most memorable westerns ever made. Its follow up, ‘The Return of the Seven’, also with Yul Brynner, was actually made in Spain, as was a further ‘cashing in’ film, ‘The Guns of the Seven’, this time with George Kennedy in the role of Chris, the mercenary with a heart of gold and a shirt of black. The Return of the Seven follows the same plot as the original, with Chris recruiting the other six in scenes shot around Madrid at Colmenar de Oreja and Nuevo Baztán, although when the Seven reach the village and liberate the Mexican peasants at the price of reducing their magnificent number, the action took place at the town of Agost, near Alicante. Two Mexican village sets were built near Agost in Alicante province in the Serra del Castellar and the Serra de Los Tajos, and rubble and bits and pieces of the set can still be seen in the area. The main Mexican ‘pueblo’ was situated near the Puente (bridge) de la Palmera (of the palm tree) and the waterwheel for the laundry scene in la Barranca (gulley) de Pina. Yul himself participated in a bullfight in Alicante, along with the bullfighter Curro Romero, in order to raise funds for the elderly. Brynner also helped raise 65,000 pesetas towards the building of the local school, La Milagrosa, situated in Carrer Joan XXIII. On July 9th 2011 the Town Hall of Agost organised the first Commemoration of the film’s making, with visits to the locations of the film, a meeting with local people who participated in the shooting, and a public viewing of The Return of the Seven in the town’s open air auditorium. One important location, just two kilometres outside Agost on the road to Novelda on the left hand side, is the Bodega La Escandella, where the owner Delfina Marco, allowed the film makers to

use her property for two weeks while shooting the cockfight and other interior scenes. The barrels from the cockfight scenes are still there, as is a lot of Agost’s famous pottery, which is prominent throughout the film, but especially when Yul Brynner is hatching his plans to rescue the Mexican peasants. The stairs through which Brynner and Robert Fuller enter were in fact a prop, although the stage on which the fight took place is still there, as is a sign from the production. Bartolomé Canto Diaz remembers many details from the film, as he was one of several boys with the unenviable task of carrying water from the village to the two Mexican village sets, built just outside the town. Not much is left to see of the villages, although Bartolomé took us over a hill to find the location of the campfire scene, where Yul and his compadres rest overnight on their way to face insurmountable odds. Bartolomé’s sister Maria Dolores is a local history teacher who has started collecting photographs and mementoes from the 1966 production and is in contact with many residents of Agost who witnessed the filming. One witness who was in the middle of the shooting is Encarna Montoya, who was the double of Elisa Montés, ‘Petra’ in the film. Encarna has a Stetson full of anecdotes, and particularly remembers when she fell off the donkey onto the gipsy boy who accompanied her to find Chris, and whose parents were less than pleased. In fact the Mexican peasants were mostly gipsies from Alicante who were bussed in every day, and according to Delfina Marco, were watched carefully by the Guardia Civil between takes. The first village is easily recognisable because of the cone-shaped ‘Castell de la Murta’ mountain in the background. The site of the nearby second village is similarly empty, as is the gully where the waterwheel and laundry scenes were shot at the beginning of the film.

Fernando Rey’s presence in the town was much appreciated during the three months filming, especially when he pointed out to the locals that they could ask for many more Yankee dollars if they wished from the film makers. He himself paid Bartolomé 100 pesetas to wash his car, when the weekly wage at that time was only 150 pesetas. The commemoration received a lot of coverage in the press, but as is usually the case, when the media went home, the matter was shelved, and today, if you visit Agost, there is nothing much to see unless a local shows you around. In fact, the local councillor for tourism resigned when they wouldn’t grant him any funds to use the film to promote the town. Villages all over Spain have similar stories to tell, of when Hollywood stars dropped in to turn their sleepy town into something magical for a few brief weeks.

A Hearty Italian Dinner: Beef Cannelloni and Wine

This Autumn, be inspired by the warm, welcoming style of Italian entertaining: turn to the kitchen, the heart of the home. “Italian gatherings are relaxing and fun, so don’t worry about décor or timing the main course to the minute guests arrive,” says Emilia Nardi, owner of the awardwining Brunello producer Tenute Silvio Nardi winery of Montalcino in Tuscany. “It is about bringing family and friends together to have a good time. Dinners should be a joy for both the guests and the hosts.”

An avid cook and host, Emilia Nardi recommends having the wine and appetizers ready for when guests arrive. Wine should be opened to breathe. A Caprese salad of freshly harvested ingredients is a hearty selection. A charcuterie board, while simple to prep, will keep guests appeased as the main course cooks. Pair these delicious bites with a structured wine. For the main course, Emilia Nardi, suggests taking a page from her family cookbook with this recipe for Beef Cannelloni: Pasta Ingredients: • 4 eggs • 2 x 3/4 cups flour • 2 pinches of salt • 2 tsp of extra virgin olive oil Pasta Instructions: Add to mixer. Knead by hand for 10 minutes and

then cover in olive oil and wrap in saran wrap. Let it rest for one hour. Spread it out by hand and cut it in a square (around 15cm per 15cm). Mixture and Sauce Ingredients: • 4 cups of tomato pasta sauce • 2 large onions, finely chopped • 1 celery stalk in big chops • 3 carrots in big chops • 6 Tbsp. of extra virgin olive oil • 1 lb. of lean beef • 1/2 lb. gr turkey breast chops • 1/2 tsp of nutmeg • 2 cups of grated parmigiana cheese • 4 and 1/3 cups béchamel sauce • 1/2 a lemon grated peel • Aromatic bunch made of rosemary, sage and parsley, tied together.

Instructions: • Cover the pan with olive oil to brown the onions. Add the meat, carrots, celery, the aromatic bunch and hot tomato sauce. Add salt and pepper. • Cook over low heat for one hour. Remove the aromatic bunch and celery. Then remove carrots and meat and put it into the mixer, adding béchamel sauce, nutmeg, lemon peel and parmigiana. Mix it well. • In boiling water, let a square of pasta be briefly immersed in the water and then put it on a rag. Put the mixture in the middle for the length of the pasta square and roll it up. • In a baking tray, add béchamel sauce and tomato past, lay down the cannelloni on it, one beside the other and then cover again with béchamel, tomato sauce, and sprinkle with parmigiana. • Bake for 40 minutes at medium-high temperature. She recommends pairing the dish with the Tenute Silvio Nardi Rosso di Montalcino 2014, a fruit-forward medium-bodied wine with a velvety texture or the Brunello di Montalcino 2011, a fullbodied wine that offers intense aromas and flavors of red berries offset by notes of leather and incense. More information about the Tenute Silvio Nardi winery, which produces finely rendered Brunellos that highlight the specific terroir of the plots where they are grown, can be found at www.tenutenardi.com. This autumn, keep guests full and happy with Italian food and drink that befits the season. From StatePoint.

Angkor Wat: The Empire That Struck Back From Nature: By Fiona Crate Fiona.crate@thecoastrider.com As readers of The CoastRider, you may know that the paper is named after author Cervantes' Don Quixote; a wandering spirit, who through the vicissitudes of life was lucky as he undoubtedly spends most of his time passing through hemispheres of this world. However my origin and my home is on the Costa Blanca, where you now are lucky enough to be settled or visiting. I hope through these pages to help you discover more every week about the advantages of having chosen the Costa Blanca as your residence; temporary or permanent; being one of the best places in Spain not just for its splendid weather, but also for its interesting history, culture and gastronomy. Today's topic is simply to introduce myself, as I write this from a place that's more or less 14,000 kilometres away from you. I'm at the epicentre of the most impressive civilization of the pre-industrial era: I am in Siem Reap, the present-day name of one of the most important cities in Cambodia in Southeast Asia, which was once the capital of, and where the mighty Khmer empire settled: reaching its zenith between the ninth and fifteenth centuries and its largest religious complex: Angkor; declared world Heritage Site by UNESCO. Perhaps the word Khmer brings you to memory grisly memories of what happened in Cambodia between 1975 and 1977: the dictatorship of the Khmer Rouge, responsible for the genocide of two million people, being one of the blackest and abhorrent episodes in

modern history. But the Khmers of which I speak today, are the ones that flourished six centuries ago, becoming one of the largest and most prosperous empires in the world, with a prolific cultural, religious, architectural and strategic activity. Only its dimensions gives an idea of its size, power and relevance: imagine a more extensive territory than the island of Manhattan overrun with more than 1.000 stone temples, palaces built over water, artificial lakes, fountains, gardens, bridges, canals and so on and so on. Water is the key element in this civilization, as it is for the Costa Blanca, which I will tell you about another time; if you give me the chance. This was thought of as 'paradise on earth', created to honour the various Hindu and Buddhist gods. This was

the feeling of more than one million people who came to live in this complex. As occurred with other great civilizations - Egyptian, Roman, Greek - the Khmer cultural civilization succumbed over the years due to neighbouring rivalries, epidemics or perhaps droughts, and it became abandoned and literally swallowed by Mother Nature.

tango between what nature and man are capable of and that stuns all who visit - an estimated one million people per year. Trying to name all the temples to visit within the complex would take too long and I would not do justice to the unnamed ones, because each of them is a unique and indispensable gem.

The quietness of this empire remains today and it reaches us after centuries of being hidden in the Cambodian jungle, guarded by the native vegetation, so dense that it formed an indivisible shield over the remains of the entire ancient civilisation. The roots of trees may well serve as a lintel or act as column as if they wanted to be part of the splendour in that one day they would perhaps reclaim what rightfully was considered theirs. It's a passionate Simply look on the Internet the words Bayon, Ankor Wat and Ta Prohm and let yourself be impressed by the evocative images that have inspired me these lines now dedicate. For me, Angkor is a “must” for visitors to Southeast Asia and indispensable for those who are attracted by cultures as impressive as this Khmer destination. I leave you with some links to interesting videos that offer more information about this destination, and also some tips if you dare to follow in my footsteps. World Heritage: Patios-de-Cordoba: One of the many sights that should be on your Bucket Lst of things to see and do in Spain is a visit to Cordoba to see the Patios-de-Cordoba: their world famous Courtyards. Due to the hot, dry Cordoban climate, the city's inhabitants, - first the Romans and later the Moslems - adapted the typical design of the popular house to their needs, making the home centre around an inner courtyard (patio in

Spanish), normally with a fountain in the middle and often a well to collect rainwater. The Moslems made further adjustments, giving the house an entrance from the street which passed through a porch, and filling the courtyard with plants to give the sensation of freshness. There are clearly two types of courtyard. The first type is in a onefamily home in which the rooms are arranged around the courtyard - it usually has arches and either a clay tiled or decorative pebbled floor. The second type is called a neighbours house (casa de vecinos). Here the individual homes look out onto the courtyard - however, these are much less common nowadays. It usually has two floors and the courtyard is made all the more attractive by the long balconies, staircases and baked clay roof tiles. The floors usually have decorative pebbles and there is often a well instead of a fountain, as well as a communal washing room.

Since 1921, the Town Hall has organised a competition of Courtyards and Crosses in the first week of May, and the owners decorate their houses with great care to try and win the prestigious award offered by the authorities. A festival runs in parallel with a number of performances by the best singers and dancers on the scene, while the local fino wine from Montilla-Moriles flows freely and delicious tapas are served.

The most characteristic district is the Alcรกzar Viejo district, between the Alcรกzar and the parish of San Basilio, although there are also many in the districts of Santa Marina, around the church of San Lorenzo and near la Magdalena. Just around the Mosque-Cathedral, there are also very beautiful old examples of courtyards in the old Jewish quarter. The most beautiful courtyards of all are to be found in the Palacio de Viana (Viana Palace), with twelve different courtyards.

It is thanks to these events that the Cordoban courtyard is becoming more and more important in popular festivities, and helps the general public to celebrate and welcome these festivals with enthusiasm and hospitality. The Courtyards Festival Of Cordoba 2017 takes place during the first two weeks of May with the exact dates to be confirmed. Ray's Rant: Why An Election? By Ray Kearney What is the purpose of an election? Most people would agree that the purpose of a general or a local election is to achieve a government chosen by the majority of the citizens of that country or locality. In the past it was normal to be governed by the strongest party or a coalition of two parties who have achieved more seats combined in government than the largest party. In Spain for example, the number of votes that a party gets determines the number of seats that it achieves. In a municipality with 25 seats, the party or parties who achieve 13 or more form a government but it is possible for two parties to achieve more votes than the largest party but have fewer seats than them. The D’Hondt electoral system is used in most of Europe and favours the largest party giving them proportionally more seats than the second largest party which in turn gets proportionally more seats than third largest party. This favouring is to try to achieve stable government, by allowing the most voted party to take power even if it falls short of achieving 50% of the vote. This system eliminates small parties like Claro, this is very necessary because otherwise we could have a situation where 25 seats could be divided over many parties. In Torrevieja, there was initially a 5/6 party government, all with different ideologies and agendas. This is high risk of becoming precarious

and volatile. Just recently one Torrevieja party bowed out of government because they did not want their names associated with what the government was doing. After 11 months and two general elections, Spain, had no government. Only with the abstention of most of a left party (PSOE) was a coalition of two centre-right parties (PP and C’s) able to elect a prime minister in a minority government over last weekend. It is an appalling situation that a major EU country can be without a government for so long. How can this situation be avoided in the future? The D’Hondt system allows a small party be eliminated if it does not reach a minimum of usually 5%. However in a general election this minimum percentage applies to the electoral district, like the Canaries, so a small party can get 2/3 seats but as a percentage of the whole country they would not get a seat. A party in Madrid could obtain more votes than a small party in the Canaries but get no seats. One solution could be to double the minimum percentage required to gain a seat. This would eliminate the pressure groups and fringe parties

and allow governments to be formed more easily. How then could the interests of minorities be served? A solution could be that larger parties have branches in areas of minority interest like Orihuela Costa, giving previously unrepresented voters a voice in a larger party in government or in opposition. The USA basically has a two party presidential race every four years, Republicans and Democrats. Some might think an ideal situation as there is always a clear winner. Here again 10,000 votes in one state can achieve more than 10,000 votes in another because each state has different numbers of delegates. This month the mathematics of their voting system will practically guarantee a democrat victory. Many will hail the sanity of mathematics in this particular case as most will welcome the “devil they know over the devil they don’t know”. To conclude, is any voting method perfect? NO. Can voting systems be tweaked to give us stable one or two party government in the future? YES. Will everybody be happy? NO. Will political parties of the future put the people before their own party politics? NO. At the end of the day the alternative would be a one party system or dictatorship, would we want this? Definitely NOT

Don't Panic: Don't Panic Over Brexit

On Friday, the British Consul urged Brits to only use official information sources after the EU referendum. At open meetings in Jávea and Teulada this week, British Consul Sarah-Jane Morris encouraged British nationals to register locally with the Spanish authorities and asked them to only go to official sources for information on the implications of the recent EU referendum. With almost one fifth of local residents British, Jávea ranks in the top ten towns in Alicante for British residents. Nearby Teulada also has a considerable British population. At the wellattended meetings, the Consul was keen to stress the need to register locally. Sarah-Jane said, “We Jávea Mayor José Chulvi, British Consul Sarah-Jane Morris

are feeding back statistics on how Jávea Councillor for EU Residents Doris Courcelles, British many British nationals are living in Consul Sarah-Jane Morris, Jávea Mayor José Chulvi Spain so the UK government takes you into account when planning our exit from the EU. The only figures we have are provided by the Spanish authorities – those on the padrón and those with residencia. It's therefore crucial that you are registered locally so that we can effectively represent you in this process.” The Consul suggested that those having trouble registering could request the services of a local gestor administrativo, or legal secretary, which are commonly used in Spain to assist with paperwork. In Jávea, Doris Courcelles, councillor for EU residents, said that local residents could visit her for help in registering with the town hall. Sarah-Jane reassured attendees that British people both living in and visiting Spain are a high priority in the information being fed back to London. She strongly advised Brits to check updates on the exit situation from official sources, and avoid rumours, highlighting the dedicated UK government webpage, which is www.gov.uk/guidance/advice-forbritish-nationals-travelling-and-living-

in-europe Updates and further information will also be published on the official 'BritsinSpain' Facebook page. Sarah-Jane was accompanied by Martyn Standing from the healthcare team, who responded to questions on how to access healthcare, reiterating the Consul's message that, as yet, nothing has changed: British nationals still enjoy the same rights as before the EU Referendum. Martyn encouraged residents to check the healthcare website for official information on healthcare provision available for British nationals, which is available at the following link: www.healthcareinspain.eu

Last Train To Clarksville by The Monkees knocking "96 Tears" by ? & the Mysterians down to #2. In the UK it peaked at Number 23 however this was before their show started showing on BBC 1 every Saturday at 6:15 with their first show being on New Year's Eve, 1966.

By Keith Nicol On the day, November 5th 1966 the Monkees were at the top of the Billboard singles chart with ‘Last Train To Clarksville’, the group’s first No. 1. Bobby Hart who co-wrote the song got the idea for the lyrics when he turned on the radio and heard the end of The Beatles' 'Paperback Writer'. He thought Paul McCartney was singing "Take the last train", and decided to use the line when he found out McCartney was actually singing 'Paperback Writer'. This was written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, a songwriting team who came up with many songs for the Monkees. They wrote this as a protest to the Vietnam War but had to keep this quiet in order to get it recorded, but it is about a guy who gets drafted and goes to fight in the war. The train is taking him to an army base, and he knows he may die in Vietnam. At the end of the song he states, "I don't know if I'm ever coming home." Bobby Hart said of writing this song: " We couldn't be too direct with The Monkees. We couldn't really make a protest song out of it - we kind of snuck it in." The only Monkee to perform on this song was Micky Dolenz, who sang lead. The four members of the group were chosen from 437 applicants to

appear on a TV show based on The Beatles movie A Hard Day's Night. The show was about a fictional band, so the members were chosen more for their looks and acting ability than for their musical talent. The musical acting quartet was composed of Americans Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork and British actor and singer Davy Jones. This was The Monkees' first single. It was released shortly after their TV show started on NBC and received a lot of publicity as a result. The Monkees followed it up with another hit, "I'm A Believer," and had several more chart entries before their show was canceled in 1968. Eventually, the group wrote their own songs and played their own instruments. "Last Train to Clarksville" was featured in seven episodes of the Monkees TV show; the most for any Monkees song. When this song was released as a single, it went straight to #1,

One of the key elements of the song came out of sheer exhaustion. Micky Dolenz explains: "We were working 24/7. Normally, you do a TV series - eight, 10 hours a day - and go home. But after filming the show, I would go into the studio and sometimes record two or three lead vocals a night. So, it's all a bit of a blur. That middle bit, there were words to that. Bobby Hart tells the story that I said, 'It's midnight, I have to be on the set at six. I can't learn to sing that.' He said, 'Okay, just go 'Doo-doo-doodoo-doo-doo-doo-doo...' You never know, if I'd sang all those words, it might not have worked."

The Monkees have sold more than 75 million records worldwide and had international hits, including "Last Train to Clarksville", "Pleasant Valley Sunday", "Daydream Believer" and "I'm a Believer". At their peak in 1967, the band outsold The Beatles and The Rolling Stones combined.

Tracing Your Family Tree By Ray Kearney,

your family. All this information is worthwhile to keep on paper but there is another way either as a backup or as a means of sharing.

Have you started your Family Tree? Nowadays free Family Search websites make it is easy. Searching for your family starts with you. Write down your own name, as it appears on your birth cert. Next write down your date and place of birth. Then write down your parent’s names and address if recorded. This is the key to all family history research. We should try to record 3 important events – Births, Marriages & Deaths for each person in our family. For each event we should try to collect 3 important pieces of information – Name, Date & Place. Write down all information gathered. You will not be able to “fill in” all the information straight away. Some will not be married or dead so record only birth details. Even dead grandparents who were married may take time to gather all their information. For keeping your information easy to read do not write on scraps of paper, it is best if you need to create a family group sheet (FGS). A family group sheet contains space for the information you need for parents and children. Keep a separate FGS for each family. Most will appear on two FGSs, once as a child and also as a parent. If you do not want to create your own FGS I can email you a template FGS by sending me a request to coast.clr@gmail.com

The information for the family you grew up in is normally easy for most people. Write down your parent’s information, using your mother’s maiden name. Enter the children in order of birth. For each person on your FGS enter their Names, Dates and Places of Birth, Marriage and Death. Most of this you could remember yourself. On a second FGS your name should appear as a parent along with your spouse and children. The next FGSs could be for your siblings along with their spouses and children. Ask family members to check your work, send them copies of FGS where their names appear, you will be surprised about the information you will learn especially from older members of

Backstage Interview with David John aka ROD Stewart Who are you and what do you do? Rod Stewart Tribute Act How did you start in the business? I bought my first guitar at 19, and was hooked. I started writing original material, then self-taught keyboard and harmonica.

What was your best moment? I don’t know if I have had a best moment, I hope I still have it to come. A memorable moment was turning on the Christmas lights in Kippax, in the village where I live in UK, and all my 7 grandchildren got to see me as Rod Stewart for the first time. Great fun. What has been your worst moment? Turned up at a venue to perform and nobody else did. Found out why after but at the time gutted.

What would you be doing if you were not an entertainer? What I did for many years in UK worked in the Mental Health field. As an entertainer who has been your biggest influence? In the early years Bob Dylan, later years Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, then Rod Stewart Do you ever get nervous or have you suffered stage fright? I think it's good to have some nerves before a show, it helps you deliver a better performance and not to become complacent. I don't have set lists; I just sing songs that feel right on the night or people request. Again that makes me feel a bit nervous, but also keeps the show fresh. Never had stage fright (touch wood).

What’s the best piece of advice you have received or would give someone starting out in the business? Enjoy what you are doing, give nothing less than your best performance every time, if you are playing to 2 or 2000 people these are the people that enable you to do what you are doing. Chances are if you enjoy your show the public will as well. Rehearse, rehearse, and rehearse, nothing worse than seeing a singer singing to words off a Karaoke track.

Any little anecdotes or interesting stories? It still makes me smile when someone comes up to me and asks did they see me in Benidorm, Tenerife, Majorca or somewhere else and I say no not performed there. They then say they saw someone who looked just like me doing Rod Stewart and I smile at them and you can see the penny drop when they realise what they have said.

Whats On – Costa Blanca caught up with Restaurant Rendezvous Whats On Costa Blanca shared a brandy after hours with Restaurant Rendezvous this week. This restaurant is located on the commercial complex on the Altos Del Limonar urbanisation just before the new Indoor Market. You can find out their opening hours and see their menu on the website. Tell us about yourselves My name is Olga and I am originally from Belarus. I run Rendezvous Restaurant with my partner Valdas who is a chef with many years of experience. He is from Lithuania. I have been in Spain for 7 years and Valdas for 10 years. Both of us have previously worked in other restaurants over here. What made you open a bar? You mean a restaurant of course. Well when you have spent a lot of time and gained a lot of experience working for other people you get to the stage where you want to be your own boss. Valdas was a chef in Lithuania for many years and always dreamed of having his own restaurant, a dream that fortunately

for both of us I shared. Where did the inspiration for the name come from? “Rendezvous,” although a French word, has become the international word for ‘meeting place’ throughout the world. Rendezvous Restaurant is designed to be exactly that, a meeting place for people of all nationalities to get together and enjoy good food. Who does the cooking? And how would you describe your style? As the qualified chef Valdas does most of the cooking while I manage front-of-house. He is influenced by dishes from many parts of the world but our menu is mainly aimed at the

Western European market, especially the British as these days most nationalities seem to like English food. What’s your favourite dish on the menu? For me, steak. Valdas has always enjoyed cooking steaks more than anything else, stretching back to his days as a junior chef in Lithuania. Over the years he has developed many interesting variations of this. People tend to think that cooking steak is a simple process but to do it properly and keep it varied and interesting is a fine art that takes many years to develop. I always look forward to eating a steak cooked by Valdas which is subtly different to anything I’ve tasted before. I am pleased to say that in all the years we have been together I have yet to be disappointed. Favourite day of the week? Tuesday is our special menu day

where any 3 courses are available for €12.50 all day. We are always extremely busy and time usually flies by. Any interesting tales? One very busy evening a meal had been placed on the bar ready to be delivered to a customer and one of the waitresses for a reason she has never been able to explain decided it was leftovers and threw the contents of the plate into the bin. We were searching high and low for this missing meal while the poor lady waiting for it was becoming more and more irate. It was embarrassing at the time but very funny looking back. A Worrying Trend By David Hudson After the summer break information of the latest traffic accidents showed an increase of 20% on this time last year. It also showed a worrying trend of an increased number of serious accidents with eight to fifteen deaths at the weekends. The former Director General of Traffico Maria Segul said that she was leaving her post “with her head held high” but she should be ashamed of herself because after decades of reduced accident figures, the last two years have seen a dramatic increase in accidents. This Halloween weekend, it seemed that some drivers wanted to personally speak to their dead ones rather than just visit them in the cemetery. There are animal rights; gay rights; student rights but what about my right not to be killed on the road?

If you watch Spanish TV you would have seen these accidents reported on Spanish News: a burnt out car jammed against a tree with three deaths: a mangled wreak of a lorry with crushed cars around it and others. Then they lifted the lorry and found another car underneath with dead bodies. Now you know why I think that this is getting out of hand. After a decade of reducing deaths, over the last two years there has been a worrying increase in deaths. The government has responded with tightening the laws regarding driving in 2014 and authorised police campaigns and increased the number of television commercials, aimed at having a greater impact to the viewer, but this has missed the mark and had no effect. Spain now has the most advanced traffic cameras in Europe but this has not reduced the accidents. (ED: it has however, raised revenue for the DGT!) A number of questions need to be asked about the policing and if this type of campaign is the correct way to deal with the blatant irresponsible way of driving that

has developed in Spain. This week I personally experienced two incidents that caused me to employ an emergency braking technique. The first at the Montesinos roundabout where a poser in an open topped car overtook me even though the Learner car in front of me and I were indicating turning left. He tried to get in front of the Driving school car to go straight on but failed before cutting through the gap in front of me, causing me to brake hard to avoid a collision.

driving schools use the Highway code rules, which are in direct conflict to what some newspaper readers might think is the correct information (ED: I wonder if they will pay out if you have a plan with them, follow their instructions and this results in an accident). The Spanish must use an official Driving School to obtain a driving licence therefore this may be the start of changing the way drivers use the roads and making them safer.

He obviously did not know the Spanish highway code that says that if the driver is turning off at the next exit they should be in the right hand lane. This was repeated once again just a few days later by another driver following a serious accident, that caused tail backs for three kms. The other incident was when I was on a main road when a driver ignored a stop line on a minor road and drove out in front of me causing me to brake hard and stop. The driver did not stop and to make matters worse behind her was a police car who did nothing. Two different types of incident in a long line of events this year that seem to be getting worse and by the recorded images shown on Spanish television containing video of bits of lorries, buses and cars and even cyclists lying mangled on the roadside: it is not ending any time soon.

In the early 50s I took a RAC/ACU motorcycling course in Oxford. It lasted thirteen weeks of which two hours was spent in theory and four hours riding and controlling the motorcycle. The bikes were supplied and they guaranteed passing the driving test. We did not go out on the road until the 9th week, having fully mastered all types of riding. Then we were accompanied for the final weeks. The theory sessions did not concentrate on the highway code but dealt with all types of riding including a session led by a police motorcyclist who gave us hints and tips.

Questions to be asked are: “do the drivers know that they are doing wrong?” There is no thought for anyone else. They think that being able to handle a vehicle means that they can drive. European rules on safety of a vehicle can actually cause the problem because of antibraking, power steering better tyres etc., meaning that when the car is taken beyond its limits, the driver is unable to control the car and correct their mistake. Some of the answers to improved driving are that the police must be more proactive and not wait to be told by the DTG what campaign to do. We are used to cyclists in Torrevieja doing what they like but in my area near Orihuela City I do not see cyclists jumping lights, riding on and off pavements, cycling the wrong way up a street or without lights or illumination at night. The only difference is Torrevieja has the Guardia Civil in control of Traffic and Orihuela has Policia National. It does not help if a national Insurance company gives bad advice in their adverts such as what they think is the correct way of transversing a roundabout, while the

Using this example, the Spanish Driving Schools could use a simulator to get students used to where everything is in the car and dealing with traffic. Then they could use a tarmac area, such as on an Industrial Estate, for driving practice, parking etc. before the students are allowed out on the road. Each week the students would have a theory class dealing with driving, avoiding accidents and basic mechanics; all of which is covered in the Spanish Highway Code. This style of course could guarantee a pass. With a positive attitude from the police and magistrates in giving heavier sentences and training, any problems could be dealt with in a simple fashion, rather than at the moment it becomes a huge problem. DIY or DIP: Disaster In Progress Installing insulation 23 Replacing guttering 17 Changing a radiator 16 Fitting a kitchen 15 Fitting a bathroom 15 Plastering 12

Most of us enjoy doing a little DIY around the house. However sometimes, that cheep tool we bought that looked fantastic in the wrapping, breaks, or a drill bit is just not sharp enough or you don't have the right tools for the bob and so you improvise. Most of the time it goes well and you benefit from a great feeling of satisfaction and a job well done. But sometimes, trying to save money by doing tricky DIY jobs around your home and garden can leave you more short-changed if you are forced to pay a professional to sort out your mess. According to a study by Yellow Pages it seems that many of us who dabble in DIY do not really know what we are doing which results in us spending a whopping £11.3 billion every year rectifying out DIY mistakes,. Not only do we spend an average of one year carrying out home improvements but, more worryingly, a third of us admit to starting jobs that we aren't equipped to tackle, can't complete or just messed up so badly that eventually we have to let our fingers do the walking, and contact a professional. Those of us who admit to making a DIY blunder spend an average of £1,058 each on materials and service charges to rectify the mistakes. And many of us are shamed by our other halves to gt the job done with only 17 per cent claim to enjoy DIY in the first place. It seems that most of us carry out DIY tasks in an attempt to save ourselves some money

The survey revealed that when faced with a disaster just 23 per cent seek expert advice. Two thirds (64 per cent) prefer to rely on family or friends to help them try and put things right, although women are more likely to do this than men (72 per cent of women compared with 51 per cent of men). One in seven men risk making the problem worse by attempting to fix it themselves.

or due to a perceived necessity to do so, rather than for the love of it. But in this era of YouTube instructions all too often DIY guys and gals will set aside their lack of ability as this certainly doesn't dampen our enthusiasm, as 76 per cent of us would attempt it. It's a feel good factor of being able able to achieve something challenging that drives many of us to reach for the Black and Decker and get stuck in. Home improvement task % of people who would attempt task themselves Wallpapering 61 Tiling 40 Put in light fittings 38 Laying a patio/decking 26

Before embarking on DIY, ask yourself: Will the project you’re considering add value to your home? Consult your local estate agent to find out which features are most soughtafter in your area. Also remember that in some areas, house prices will be capped at a value regardless of the home improvements you make – so adding a loft conversion, for example, will not increase value any further. Be realistic when considering carrying out your own home improvements. Do you definitely have the equipment, knowledge, skills and time to complete the job properly? If you are in any doubt about your skills in DIY, why not contact one of the professionals in The CoastRider before your DIY becomes DIP?

No Win No Fee For Claims Against Bank Guarantors For more than 25 years, the Law Firm of Andreu & Alenda Abogados SCP has been serving the Torrevieja community. After a recent change in Spanish legislation, the Law firm can now offer their services on a No Win No Fee basis to serve claims against Banks for Off-Plan developments that were never fulfilled. If you were unfortunate enough to invest in such a scheme, you now have the opportunity to put forward a claim with a Law Firm that can boast a 100% success rate in the cases they have taken against Spanish Banks. Hundreds of expatriates who once thought they had said goodbye to their savings, now have the possibility of receiving a refund on their deposits as Andreu & Alenda Abogados work directly with the Banks that received payments directly from builders and developers for off-site construction. What many potential home owners failed to understand is that the vast majority of developers had to take out general bank guarantees for the buyers or an individual policy for each prospective client. Andreu & Alenda Abogados base their claims on the fact of Bank liability, as the financial institutes received payments directly from the developers however the banks did not grant individual guarantees to the buyers. Many of these builders and developers who sold off-site plans have gone into voluntary administration or filled for bankruptcy, making it impossible for you to receive a refund of all the monies paid to their client-

“We care about your case and we solve your problems” buyers directly from the developers. Some of these companies include Herrada del Tollo, SL; San Jose Inversiones, SL; Eurohouse 2010,SL; Huma Mediterraneo, SL etc... Andreu & Alenda Abogados SCP say: “We will assess your claim on a No Win No Fee basis, then we can tell you how successful your claim is likely to be. This service is 100% free and confidential. We offer our services on this basis because we think you have already paid a lot of money to buy your property. You have been though a distressing

situation but the main point is that we do believe we can help you to recover what you deserve. We file the petition in court asking for the refund of the principal amount invested plus the legal interest applied. We have already been 100% successful in recovering the amounts paid to developers, for all our clients. Please do not hesitate to contact us for any query you might have for a free, no obligation consultation. You can contact us by phone: 966 927 799 or by email: legalservice@andreualenda.com.”

Why You Need A Spanish Will must be given to your descendants, if you have them. One third of this can be freely deposited to the person or entity of your choice; you can leave it to whomever you wish. Most of the Common Wills granted by expats here in Spain, agree to leave what they own in Spain to their partner, whether they are married or not. This will be enforceable only if the testator included in their last will that the applicable law to the inheritance is their national law. The same law applies to the whole succession, irrespective of either the type of assets (moveable or immoveable) concerned or the country of their location. If not, Spanish law will be applied and his/her children might claim their rights.

by Fuensanta Alenda Andreu The European Union forced Spain to make changes to their laws, when it comes to writing out a Spanish Will and who will benefit after death. It is becoming usual (or more and more common) to file a petition before the Spanish courts on behalf of the children that were not included in the last will of their parents, British nationals and resident in Spain. Why? Last year came into force the European regulation No 650/2012, on jurisdiction, applicable law, recognition and enforcement in matter of succession and on the creation of a European Certificate of Succession. This ruling is to apply to a succession involving the death of a person on or after August 17th 2015. One of the main significant changes to the present legal situation is that to succession and wills the applicable law is that of the State of the habitual residence of the decease but rather the law of the State with which the deceased was manifestly more closely connected. But what does that really mean? According to the Spanish Civil Code, the applicable law of who should benefit after death depended upon citizenship. Due to that, foreigners would typically grant their will according to their national law not observing the fixed rules established by the Spanish Civil Code. Now that the EURegNo 650/2012 has come into force, the applicable law will be that of the place of your habitual residence

at the time of death, regardless of your original citizenship. However, the term habitual residence is not legally defined in this regulation, but this is a matter is something we shall cover in further articles. The applicable law will govern, for example, the determination of the beneficiaries and their respective shares; the capacity to inherit; the powers of the heirs; the executors of the wills and the administrators of the estate and the liability for the debts under the succession. This has a special relevance, as the Spanish Civil Code is completely different, for example, than British applicable law. One of the aspects of the Spanish law, is that two thirds of your rights and properties (despite their nature: house, car, jewellery, investments, etc...),

However, before their death, a person can instead choose that the applicable law should be the law of their country of nationality or they can choose the law of where they live, but in either case, this election must be clearly included in their will. Confused? Concerned? Assume nothing when it comes to the new laws. Our advice is to review the Will you have granted and verify the applicable law. If you have any doubts, have not already made a Will, or you want us to check it for you, do not hesitate to contact us on: legalservice@andreualenda.com. The information provided in this article is for general information purposes only and does not constitute professional legal advice as it covers just one of the many aspects of this matter.

What To Do In Case Of A Car Accident

By Andreu & Alenda Lawyers

treatment, even those arising from rehabilitation, medicines or personal aid required. Depending on your injuries, your lawyer will advise you of what costs can be claimed from the other party.

At Andreu & Alenda Lawyers, we always stress the importance of taking action within the first 72 hours following a car accident, as this is crucial in order to be successful when claiming damage compensation. Andreu & Alenda Lawyers recommend that you follow these tips in order to defend yourself and to maximize the probability of obtaining compensation for injuries that you may have suffered through no fault of your own: Do not move the cars from the collision area before taking pictures of the accident scene with your mobile phone. Photograph the vehicles at the crash site from different angles: take different points of view: from both sides: behind and in front: damage suffered to all the vehicles involved: if there is a traffic signal or traffic signs: lines on the road: of the personal injuries and of the witnesses, if any. Call the PolicĂa Local (if you are in town) or the Guardia Civil (if you are in the roads outside town). They will assist you and will take notice of all the relevant facts occur in the accident. They issue a report that can be very useful for future claims. Fill in and sign the DeclaraciĂłn Amistosa de Accidentes (the Friendly Report). It is filled with the personal information of both drivers (ID, phone,), license information of the cars involved, a picture of the collision points, the names of the insurance companies and it also needs to be signed by both parties. If you do not have a report to fill in with you, just make sure you get all those details from the other driver.

Obtain personal details of the witnesses of the accident and the occupants of the other vehicle. They will help you if you need to make a report before the authorities how the accident took place and to clarify whose fault was it. If the other party is responsible for the accident or the other driver involved in the car accident refuses to collaborate, you should take note of any details that may serve to identify them, the licence plate number, and any persons witnessing the accident, etc. Even though you might think you are not injured, we always recommend going to a Hospital or Medical Centre. Some damages, for example, a neck contracture (whiplash), appears a few hours after the accident occurs. Make sure the doctor drafts a detailed report stating the extent of any injuries resulting from the accident and a complete diagnosis. This report will be a very important factor for your lawyer. Keep receipts of all payments for the medical

As soon as you can, contact your lawyer so he/she can start proceedings with the insurance company in first instance. There is a deadline of seven days to submit the claim to your insurance company and a period of one year from the filing of the proceedings or the healing of your injury to file a claim for civil liability (ie, the economic compensation for your losses). The lawyer will file a petition claiming financial compensation for the physical aftermath (crutches, hired help, disability,) and any expenses that the accident has caused you. Accidents involving any vehicle can include costs that may not be readily apparent until well after the incident including: Vehicle repairs; Depreciation of a vehicle's value; Medical bills; Time lost from work; Car rentals; Towing charges; Pain and suffering. Andreu & Alenda Lawyers will be pleased to help you through this procedure. Please contact us calling 96 692 77 99 or by email: legalservice@andreualenda.com. We are based in Torrevieja but covers all Spanish Courts throughout Spain. Check out our 'pull out and keep' centre pages, with details of how to fill in the DeclaraciĂłn Amistosa de Accidentes (the Friendly Report) and a copy for you to cut out, or photocopy, and keep in your car: just in case.

Dog Photographer of the Year 2016 competition is now open After huge international success with the most recent Kennel Club Dog Photographer of the Year competition, the annual canine photography contest returns this month. The prestigious competition is open to both budding and experienced photographers, who are encouraged to submit their photos to be in with a chance of receiving international exposure for their work as well as winning a selection of prizes. The competition, which opened this week, is free to enter and will be accepting submissions until 15th March 2017. This year’s competition received almost 13,000 entries from more than 90 countries, making it the biggest and most popular canine photography competition in the world. The competition comprises ten categories, including two which are new this year: Young Pup Photographer (for the under 12s) and Rescue Dogs, another charity category to complement Assistance Dogs: Dogs at Play: Portrait: Oldies:

usually accompanied by Baxter, my West Highland White Terrier, when shooting in the great outdoors. I was finding that he would often sneak in to many of my photos, so instead of leaving him at home or editing him out of the shots I decided to make him the focus within the landscape. This photograph shows Baxter taking an early morning swim with some ducks on Loch Lomond in the Scottish highlands. To get the shot, I set my camera to continuous shooting mode and held it just a few centimetres from the water’s surface. As he swam towards me I fired the shutter to catch the action. Of the several images I took this was the stand out shot." Dogs at Work: Puppies: Man’s Best Friend: Young Pup Photographer (for entrants aged 11 and under): ‘I Love Dogs Because …’ (for entrants aged between 12 and 17): Assistance Dogs: Rescue Dogs: An overall winner will then be chosen from the winning ten images. Anastasia Vetkovskaya from Moscow, Russia was selected as the

overall winner of this year’s competition with her winning image of an English Springer Spaniel wading into water at dawn. Upon winning the biggest canine photography competition in the world, Anastasia said: “I have loved animals from an early age, which is why I went to Moscow Veterinary Academy and became a veterinary surgeon in 2007. Around this period of time, my husband gave me my first SLR camera and since then I have devoted all of my free time to photography.” Many previous winners go on to achieve great things in the world of photography. Jade Hudson, the most recent young photographer to win the ‘I Love Dogs Because…’ category, has since been offered a three year photography apprenticeship and plans to build a career in pet and landscape photography. Jade’s mum Joanne credits winning the competition for giving her daughter the confidence to pursue photography professionally. The overall winner will receive an original oil painting of their image by artist Sara Abbott and a VIP mentorship day with international dog photographer and competition alumni Andy Biggar. All category winners will have their images on display at the Kennel Club in Mayfair, and will win a SmugMug business account to showcase their work online and a one day course at the prestigious Nikon School in London, as well as a trophy and exhibition print presented during an award ceremony. The Assistance Dog and Rescue Dog category winners will also receive a £500 donation from the Kennel Club Charitable Trust to their chosen dog charity. Michael Higginson, winner of 2015’s Assistance Dog category, chose the Dogs for Good charity as the recipient of his prize, saying at the time: “It’s an honour to be able to show the world what a difference a dog can make to someone else’s life.” To officially register and enter, please visit www.dogphotographeroftheyear.or g.uk. Hydrotherapy: How Does It Work? Hydrotherapy works by transferring the sensation experienced on the skin to various nerve impulses throughout the body. This could probably explain why you feel instantly revived and rejuvenated after a day at the spa, or even after a swim in your pool. The term hydrotherapy refers to the use of water as a therapeutic treatment. For centuries water has been known to contain healing minerals. Natural spring water is one form of water that contains a lot of natural healing minerals. In the case of natural spring water, the minerals are formed from the layers of rock that the water passes through. Mineral water contains trace minerals such as calcium, magnesium, lithium and sulphur, which are known to have healing properties within the body. The mineral contents of both natural water and natural spring water have been shown to clean and possibly, even cure the body of illness and disease. They could also restore health and longevity. Sulphuric waters are well known for the treatment of skin conditions including dermatitis as well as fungal infections. From time to time, waste products accumulate in the body, specifically within the blood and body tissues. The waste from the blood is carried from one section of the body to another, via the blood vessels, where it ‘clouds up’ the various body

tissues. This clouding could result in the blood and body tissues becoming toxic. Toxicity can be experienced by the body in the form of muscle or joint pain, fever, congestion, sinusitis, indigestion, stress and arthritis, to name a few. Toxic build up typically occurs when the body experiences high levels of stress. Physically active individuals, specifically sportsmen and women often experience muscle and joint pain, which can be released by hydro therapeutic and massage treatments. Flu and cold viruses also contribute to a build up of toxins in the body. These too, can be released through the practice of hydrotherapy. There are two basic ways in which water therapy or hydrotherapy can be used to cleanse the body. The most common systems include external hydro therapeutic treatments such as steam baths, mud baths, sitz baths, hot baths, cool immersion baths, Jacuzzis and saunas. These treatments not only work on cleansing the body, but are relaxing treatments that are often pleasurable. Water fasting, or water dieting is another hydro

therapeutic system that detoxifies the body. This system is done internally and involves consuming strictly water for a period of time. When on a water diet, one is most likely to experience headaches and feeling of weakness. The headaches experienced are possibly withdrawal symptoms, from the lack of waste products that the body has become accustomed to. Health spas make a living and a business out of providing various forms of hydro therapeutic treatments at their facilities. Often times essential oils are combined with natural and spring water to enhance the hydro therapeutic treatment. Interestingly enough, it is not just hot water that has healing properties. Hydro therapeutic treatments can also include the use of cold water. In fact, a combination of hot and cold water treatments are often used to stimulate the body. Hot water is said to dilate the blood vessels, while cold water is said to stimulate the blood vessels. The combination of these two temperatures, combined with the healing properties of water is said to force waste products to be removed from the blood and body tissues. In spa treatments, you will often find splash pools of various temperatures, which are utilised in a sequence to achieve an optimal stimulation and help the detoxification process to take place more effectively.

Calories in Food: What Exactly Are Calories? You hear about them all the time, we eat them, cut them and burn them, but what exactly is a calorie and what do you do with it?

that exercise burns calories and the more active you are the more calories your body will require.

In simple terms, a calorie is a unit that measures energy, originally from the Latin word calor, which, directly translated, means heat. Therefore a calorie is the amount of heat that is required to raise the temperature of one liter of water, one degree Centigrade and create energy. Calories

Some interesting calories. . .

All the food we eat contains calories You body needs energy to function, just like your car needs fuel to get moving on the road. The food we eat can be thought of as our body's "fuel". The foods we eat contain calories, which are broken down into energy by the metabolic system. Unfortunately that's where our similarities with our cars end. If you overfill a car, the fuel will simply flow over. With human bodies however, an overconsumption of calories and consuming more than we need and more than we use, gets stored as fat within the body. Calories and the energy they provide are required for daily functioning. Our brain, organs and nervous system all need energy to operate. So, without food, calories or energy we would simply not be able to perform. It is also important to note

facts

Did you know that one piece of cherry flavoured cheesecake can burn a sixtywatt light bulb for one and a half hours? That's how powerful its heat generating ability is.

There are 9 calories per gram of fat. There are 7 calories per gram of alcohol. There are 4 calories per gram of carbohydrate (potatoes, rice and starches as well as fruit and vegetables). There are 4 calories per gram of protein (animal products such as meat and dairy as well as soya products).

10 Simple All Natural Beauty Tips 1. Banana and Egg Hair Treatment Looking for a little more shine in your hair? Simply mix one egg and a mashed up banana. Apply it as a thick paste to your hair and leave it on for 10 – 30 minutes. Wash it our doing your usual hair washing ritual (if you usually use a store-bought conditioner you’ll probably only need to condition the ends). And voila! Super simple, and all natural, beauty tip. 2. Moisturising Nail Treatment Soak your nails in olive oil for five minutes. And then sit back and admire your pretty hands. 3. Simple Honey Face Mask

Note: For you no ‘poo-ers keep in mind that coconut oil will saturate your hair with awesome goodness… that can be really hard to get out with just baking soda and *some* natural shampoos. You may want to try just a little coconut oil on a little section of hair and see if you can get it out before you do this. 8. Simple Toxic-Free Shaving Cream Use coconut oil on your legs as a natural replacement for your shaving cream. Talk about a simple, natural beauty tip. 9. All Natural Black Head Removal Place 4 or 5 drops of raw honey on an open lemon wedge. Then rub the lemon on your face for a minute, emphasizing any trouble areas. Leave the mixture on for 5 minutes and rinse with cold water. (Keep in mind that citrus can make your skin photosensitive so it’s best to do this before bed rather than before going outside). 10. Dry Brushing for Better Skin

Raw honey is naturally anti-bacterial and a super quick way to get soft, beautiful skin. Once a week use a tablespoon or so of raw honey (not the processed stuff parading as honey) and gently warm it by rubbing your fingertips together. Spread on your face. Leave on for 5 – 10 minutes and then use warm water to gently rinse it off and pat dry. Then bask in the glow of your honey-awesomeness. 4. Apple Cider Vinegar Clarifying Shampoo For those who are using commercial shampoos: To help eliminate any build up in your hair, mix ¼ cup organic apple cider vinegar with 1 cup water. Follow with your usual conditioner. 5. Elbow and Knee Exfoliate and Skin Brightener Cut an orange in half and rub it on your elbows and knees. Helps soften those rough patches. And it smells good. (Rinse off the sticky mess when you are done.) 6. Gentle Body Scrub

Mix a 2 to 1 ratio of olive oil and sea salt to make a quick and effective body scrub. This helps get rid of dead skin cells creating softer, more glowing skin. And this natural beauty tip is much cheaper that expensive store bought body scrubs. 7. Easy Deep Conditioning Hair Treatment Want super soft, hydrated hair? This is one of my favourite all natural beauty tips. Use melted coconut oil as a deep conditioning hair and scalp treatment. Massage coconut oil into your scalp and then work it through your hair. Leave it on for a couple of hours and then wash it out using shampoo (no need to condition unless you have really long hair and then maybe just the ends.)

Dry brushing is a simple detoxification process for your body. It stimulates a number of organs through a gently massage. It also helps the lymphatic system, eliminates dead skin coatings, strengthens the immune system, can eliminate cellulite, stimulates the hormones, and can help tighten skin through better circulation. Best of all, it’s cheap and easy.

You Couldn't Make It Up

Here in the manic world of newspapers, we often have to laugh at ourselves and our compatriots with the odd typo here and there and the odd mishap. We are all human after all. Many of us might complain that all newspapers ever talk of is doom and gloom. Disturbing events taking place around us might make anyone, with a newspaper, feel a little depressed but fear not because sometimes, just sometimes, newspapers are good for a little giggle too. After we ran our first feature on Newspaper Headline Bloopers, here's a second bite at the cherry...

Football y FĂştbol Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has accused his players of approaching the loss to Fenerbahce as if it was a "summer friendly". The Red Devils dropped to third in Group A of the Europa League following a 2-1 defeat in Istanbul. United have now won just two of their last seven games in all competitions. "A team that concedes after two minutes is a team that is not ready, not mentally prepared, not focused, not concentrated," said Mourinho. United have scored just two goals in their last four games, while conceding after just 30 seconds against Chelsea and 65 seconds against Fenerbahce. Southampton remain on course to reach the Europa League knockout phase after fighting back to earn a memorable 2:1 win against Italian giants Inter Milan. Inter scored with their first shot on target when skipper Mauro Icardi pounced to smash in a loose ball. Victory keeps Saints second in Group K with seven points from their four matches, meaning they could clinch a last-32 place if they win at leaders Sparta Prague in their next game on 24 November. Athletic Bilbao striker Aritz Aduriz became the first player to score five goals in a Europa League game as the Spaniards thrashed Genk 5-3. The 35year-old Spaniard scored a hat-trick of penalties and is the first Spaniard to score five goals in a single European game since 1971. Fabrizio Ravanelli was the last player to score five goals in a second-tier European game - hitting that mark for Juventus in a Uefa Cup match against CSKA Sofia in 1994.

Lionel Messi, the Teflon coated Barcelona 29year-old forward, will not face any punishment by Uefa, despite reports he clashed with Manchester City players in the tunnel after Tuesday's 3-1 Champions League defeat. Football's transfer market needs to be "seriously revised" with greater "clarity and transparency" required, says Fifa president Gianni Infantino. The Swiss-Italian also said he was against clubs "hoarding" players and suggested introducing squad limits. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says his side's 3-1 Champions League victory over Barcelona is a landmark win for the club, but admits they did not do it playing the way he favours. City had not beaten Barca in five previous attempts in Europe and Guardiola said after the Group C game

on Tuesday: "It is a good step to say that once in our lives we played against the best team in the world and we beat them. We competed with Barcelona, but for now we did it in a different way. We played more long balls because we are still not ready to keep the ball and play like they do. They have been playing that way for 25 years. For us, it is three or four months that we have been trying to play in a different style." City staged a thrilling comeback after Lionel Messi's 90th Champions League goal put the visitors 1-0 up in the first 20 minutes.

The Sun say Manchester United are prepared to release 32-year-old midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger with a ÂŁ10m severance deal. Napoli are considering making an offer for 25-year-old striker Simone Zaza, whose transfer from Juventus to West Ham will be made permanent if he plays 10 matches for the Hammers while former Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas is in line to replace Sven-Goran Eriksson as manager of Chinese Super League team Shanghai SIPG.

Infantino described the practice as "permitted" but added: "It doesn't feel right for a club to just hoard the best young players and then to park them left and right. It is not good for the development of the player or the club. In the good old world of internet and newspaper gossip, apparently Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has asked his agent to say sorry to City manager Pep Guardiola. After Dimitri Seluk criticised Guardiola's decision to leave the 32-year-old out of his side, the Spaniard said he would not be selected again until Seluk apologised. A 2:1 away loss to Hondon Nieves C.F, dropped them to tenth spot in the league but after seven games they are still only seven points away from league leaders Santa Pola, so there is still plenty to pay for. CF Torrevieja play at home today, Saturday, at 18.00, in the Nelson Mandela Stadium, against Catral who presently are 13th and three points behind CF Torrevieja. CD Montesinos 6:1 At. Orihuela CF CD Montesinos were in full flow last week in recording a confident victory over At. Orihuela CF. However not only are they fighting for victory on the field but have appealed against two decisions to possibly give them an extra six points, which would leapfrog them up the table. Tomorrow, Sunday 6th November, they travel to Sporting Orihuela, where they never seem to do well with an 18.00 kick-off under lights. Away supporters to meet at Bar Tambalache, Los Montesinos, at 5.00pm.
