Red Cross encourage Brits to volunteer

One year after signing an agreement with the British Embassy, the Red Cross has taken fresh steps to get English speaking charities to work more closely with their local groups and to encourage more English speakers to volunteer. The British Consulate, along with Pedro Dominguez, newly hired by the Red Cross as European residents’ coordinator, held meetings in Calpe and Torrevieja to allow the Red Cross local groups to get to know their English speaking counterparts. They were keen to collaborate and were unanimous in what their main need was – more volunteers.

The different groups also discussed how to get more vulnerable British nationals to use teleasistencia, the Red Cross “panic alarm” service which allows at risk people to continue living independently as they can call for help whenever needed. Many British nationals don’t realise that the Red Cross offers this service in English and that it isn’t just a case of pressing the emergency button – volunteers will also carry out regular welfare checks so the user doesn’t become isolated.

SkyDiving for Charity By Keith Nicol The team at the Nook Bar in Las Filipinas have been involved in charity fundraising since they opened their doors. Owners Linsey Smart and Euenan Gordon are possibly best known for putting together a mad and crazy fundraising campaign for their Christmas Day swim at La Zenia Beach, with Just Brass playing away in the background (something that Linsay says she'll be doing again this year regardless) but for 2016 the fundraisers through they would do something a little different: skydiving. Like all the best ideas, the idea came over a cafe table, as Patrick and Dick met with the former directors of the Foreign Residents Office, Graham Knight and Jean Paul plus former Councillor for Foreigners in Torrevieja, Pedro Valero. Almost jokingly, because Jean Paul used to be a French Paratrooper, they joked that maybe they should all do a skydive to raise money for this year's main charity fundraising event. And so the gist of the idea was planted back in 2015, even before the Christmas Day swim. Patrick then went back to the UK on his family visit and when he returned he found that Dick had already booked everything and put the idea in motion and so the fund raising campaign started in earnest in January 2016. This year's charities to benefit will be the AECC, AFA Torrevieja and a small, local charity in Scotland, to raise funds for local boy Riley Murry who requires special treatment for his condition which at present is only available in the USA. So last Saturday at the unheard off hour (for most of them) at 6.30am, half a dozen cars headed off toward towards Madrid and just shy of two hours later and a few kilometres from Albacete, arrived at the Ontur Airdrome to get ready for action. Six volunteers, Ian Sweles, Lorraine WestBrook, Dick Conway, Stella Dyer, Davy Tweedie (all pictured along with owners Linsay and Euenan) and John Wing, who was MIA at the after skyfall party at The Nook, all kited up and took part in the tandem jump, or yumping, as I now seems to be called.
In teams of two volunteers at the time, they took to the air, and three trip later, all were safely back on he ground with huge smiles and lots of cheers from the 20 or so supporters who had made the trip. The Ontur aerodrome, is the most central in the district and a privileged skydiving point. Each yumper ascended to an altitude of 3,300 meters and then, once attached to a professional skydiver, jumped in freefall for 45-60 seconds. Once they reached an altitude of 1500 meters, the parachutes were deployed and they were piloted for about 10 minutes landing right on target beside the cheering supporters. The group started at 10.30am with the plane taking about 20 minutes to reach altitude before jumping from 3,500 metres. The next event will be a money counting night and all those sponsors that have not yet done so are asked to please drop in their donation to the bar, and anyone else who would like to donate, would be welcome to do so. Alicante, Gibraltar, Dracula By Bob Yareham Have you ever wondered why Gibraltar is British? Those of us who live in Spain usually refer to the place in muted whispers and, when asked how we would like it if Saint Michael’s Mount were Spanish, invariably reply that worst things could happen. Britain obtained Gibraltar at the Treaty of Utrecht 1714, in exchange for accepting Felipe Borbon as King of Spain, thus beginning the dynasty of the present King. This all came about at the end of the War of Spanish Succession, largely fought along the Mediterranean coast, and especially in places like Denia and Alicante, where there were castles to defend. Even more surprising is the fact that Alicante’s castle has been used as Dracula’s home in a film released in 1970 and starring Christopher Lee, who, tired of playing Dracula, didn’t quite manage to say “never again” and took part in this German production with Herbert Lom and Klaus Kinski. Spanish director Jesus Franco, whose films tend to follow the Benny Hill tradition of seeing women as something attached to a large pair of breasts, took the crew to Alicante, where they used Santa Barbara Castle for the scene in which Count Dracula suffers a severe case of sun burn.
The scene at Santa Barbara occurs at the end of the film when our heroes throw some very light looking boulders down upon a group of gypsies transporting Dracula’s coffin and then set fire to him, which to be honest, he rather seems to enjoy. My favourite scene from this film, apart from the bat on a stick that we imagine is Dracula, is the one
where a room full of stuffed animals threaten to attack the heroes by moving three inches to left and right. Unfortunately they don't make films like this anymore. One of the most remarkable military deeds in the history of Santa Bárbara Castle happened during the War of Spanish Succession between followers of the Borbon Felipe of Anjou and the Habsburg Charles. On the 28th June 1705 the British fleet of 5 ships under the command of Sir George Byng and a group of marines under Sir John Jennings began the siege of Alicante. On July 31st 1706, the English battleships supporting Archduke Charles bombarded the city for eight days. On August 8th, Dutch and English allied troops launched the definitive attack which ended in the occupation of the square. Once the city was taken, the Neapolitan troops, Corbí’s militiamen and some people from Alicante, led by French Marshal of Irish origin, Mahony, sought refuge in Santa Bárbara Castle. On September 7th, Mahony surrendered to the English because of the intense artillery fire suffered by the Castle and the fact that there were only 235 soldiers left in it. Two years later, in the winter of 1708, the Borbon supporters, led by D’Asfelf, returned to Alicante with their troops and took the city on December 3rd. The Castle, however, remained in the hands of the English. It was then when the most spectacular
event in the conflict took place. D’Asfelf hatched a plan to retake the fortress by blowing it up. To carry out this plan, tunnels were dug to undermine it. This work was finished in February 1709 and on the 28th they were packed with explosives. D’Asfelf, after inviting Richard, the Castle's English Commanding Officer to surrender on several occasions – even inviting the English to come down and see that a mine had indeed been packed with 150,000 kg of gunpowder- ignited the mine on March 4th, destroying part of the Castle and killing Richard and some twenty soldiers. However, the English garrison didn’t abandon the fortress until April 19th, Alicante thus becoming the last place in Valencia to be freed from the occupation of troops supporting Archduke Charles. Despite his reticence to be typecast, Lee would continue to play Dracula, and continue to make many films in Spain, including all three of Richard Lester’s Musketeer trilogy, which featured Denia’s port.

The schools of Acequión, Cuba, Salvador Ruso, Romualdo Ballester, Nuestra Señora del Rosario, Ciudad del Mar, Alpe and La Purísima performed songs, dances and theatre skits, to remind us all of the articles that refer to the Declaration of the Rights of the Child that were approved on November 20, 1959 by the seventy-eight member states that then constituted the United Nations Organization. The articles recognise the child as "a human being capable of developing physically, mentally, socially, morally and spiritually with freedom and dignity."

Salt: From Torrevieja To The World By Fiona Crate Francisco de Quevedo, a famous writer of the Spanish Golden Age (1600's) wrote: “It is not wise to be he who finds a treasure, but to be the one who works to untie it”. The truth is that there are many treasures that surround us, that we do not notice nor unearth. I hope that in today’s article I can shed some light to to help you discover some of them.
As promised in my previous article on the Khmer Empire of Angkor in Cambodia (Edition 604), there are a number of similarities of that civilization and the area where you are living now. And it is that both civilisations knew how to take advantage of the water; that powerful element that gives everything and everything snatches it, making it the engine of its development. Mother Nature drew two bubbles of salt water along our coast: surely you have seen them while passing along the N-332 from Alicante to Cartagena. Your attention is drawn to the powerful colours of roses, purples and greens that changes colours at will. A chromatic
amalgam whose culprits are a very peculiar bacteria that inhabit extreme environments like these. It is the Laguna de Torrevieja (sapphire colour) and the Laguna de La Mata (emerald colour), with such richness and diversity that they have been declared a protected National Park. The first one has an area of 1,400 hectares and the second is 700 hectares. Their existence is crucial for the development of the biological cycles of many species, especially birds such as flamingos, osprey (águila pescadora) or black-eared zampullin (zampullín cuellinegro), as they live together along with other nearby lagoons, forming a triangle of internationally significant wetlands. The high salinity of its waters proved to be its greatest ally as centuries ago these were turned into a coveted source of wealth for the region. The quality and salt production of these two lagoons was such that it was said that they could supply all of Europe, back in the eighteenth century, a time when salt, as well as a natural preservative, was used as the currency of exchange in Economic transactions. This National Park is a real gem to explore. So close to us but at the same time so unknown that I leave the path along the lagoons’ as a treasure so you can discover this for yourself. There is, on one side, a yellow footpath that allows you to contemplate, from the high wooden Observatory, a wide panorama of the whole park, fauna and flora, typical plant formations and birds,;the true protagonists in any wet zone. If you prefer, there is
a bicycle route; the red route; a journey of more than five kilometres that allows you to discover the best views of the Park. We also have the wine route; a pleasant walk among the vineyards of the park, featuring five stops; a small recreational area and panels explaining the history, biodiversity, the particularities of the crop and the artisan process of obtaining the famous "Wine of La Mata ". Currently this centre is offering an exhibition of photos to commemorate the 20th anniversary since it was declared a Protected Natural Park in 1996. The shortest international flight lasts 8 minutes This week, People's Viennaline will launch service between St. Gallen-Altenrhein Airport in Switzerland and Friedrichshafen in Germany, CNN reported. The flight is the shortest scheduled international flight in the world— covering just 13 miles in distance and lasting a brief eight minutes. The 8-minute flight beat the previous record held by a 10-minute flight between Vienna and Bratislava (Slovakia) according to Travel and Leisure. Now, the shortest commercial flight in the world takes place between the towns of St. GallenAltenrhein (Switzerland) and Friedrichshafen
(Germany) on a distance of 20 km. The flight is operated twice a day in both directions and cost 40 euro for a single trip. The flight between the two destinations takes place over Lake Constance and is a good option for both tourists and workers who commute on both sides of the lake. Other transport options between the two cities are traveling by car for an hour and two-hour journey by train.
The flight wasn’t inaugurated without a bit of controversy due to the amount of fuel the Embraer 170 jets burn for the brief flight – as well as the noise they generate during take-off and landing. People's
Viennaline CEO Danel Steffen told CNN that only 4,000 or so passengers a year are expected to take the short flight, but he expects it will be a benefit to both tourists and those who work across the lake. In addition, Steffen expects the flight to be a popular activity for aviation buffs around the world. The Vienna, Austria-based airline currently operates a single Embraer E170 regional airliner with 76 seats and is expected to take delivery of a second aircraft next summer.
A giant telescope to be An old military nuclear built in the Canary Islands plant opened for tourists By Anda Robescu A non-profit organization that wants to place a giant telescope on a mountaintop in Hawaii has chosen the Canary Islands as alternate location if the device can not be built on the mountain that many Hawaii residents believe to be holy. A mountain in the Canary Islands, Spain, is the primary alternative to Hawaii, Thirty Meter Telescope officials announced in a press release. The TMT International Observatory Board of Governors met last week to discuss the project's progress in Hawaii and identified Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos on La Palma island "after careful deliberation," board chair Henry Yang said in a statement. Hawaii's Mauna Kea is still the preferred location, Yang said, adding that telescope officials will forge ahead in efforts to obtain a permit to build it on conservation land. The Mauna Kea Mountain was the first choice due to
the fact that its top is at 4,200 meters high; the visibility is good almost 300 days a year. The second location in Palma is only at a height of 2396 meters. The project is stalled in Hawaii amid intense protests by Native Hawaiians and others who cite the sacredness of the land and other issues for their opposition. The state Supreme Court last year invalidated the project's permit, ruling that the state land board's approval process was flawed. The ruling sent the matter back for a new contested-case hearing. "I'm glad they're looking at alternative sites," Kealoha Pisciotta, one of the leaders challenging the telescope, said during a break in the hearings. "I have to say if they do go with the alternative site, I hope they don't do there what they're doing to Native Hawaiians and the people of Hawaii."
By Anda Robescu An old military nuclear facility which has never been used has been redesigned to be visited by tourists, writes UPI.com. Hailed as the largest man-made cave in the world, the 816 Nuclear Military Plant, located in the mountains of Fuling district in China's Chongqing municipality, was designed to manufacture plutonium in the 1960s - a 17-year project involving more than 60,000 soldiers. Yang Yan, an administrator at the site, told China Daily: 'So far, no foreigners have visited the plant. A tour takes three hours, and visitors must follow the guide, otherwise they will get lost in this maze-like cave. This base has never been put into operation or stored any nuclear material,' Mr Yang said. 'There is no need to worry about radiation. It is safe to enter.'
After its declassification in 2002, the facility now includes a modern lighting and sound system, a science centre dedicated to the nuclear field and other exhibition spaces dedicated to the history of China. The plant spans 9662 square meters in 18 wells dug into the rock and 130 tunnels. It was designed to tolerate thousands of tons of TNT explosives, and at least 100 workers were reported to have died during construction. A complete tour takes three hours and visitors must follow closely the guide in order to not be lost on the dark sites of the plant. A small part of the nuclear plant was opened in 2010 during China's national holidays, but now only a third of it is open to the public. Construction of the base began in 1966, over 60,000 soldiers being involved in this process and at least 100 have died during the works, concludes UPI.com.

Business in Orihuela Costa

My wife Evelyn and I started our own real estate business in January 1999. Prior to starting our own company I worked with a Spanish estate agency that was totally oblivious to the concept of customer care or after-sales service. From my managerial background working with “Superquinn” in Ireland, it was quite easy to give Irish and British people the service they deserved and expected. This customer centred and personal approach along with good product knowledge was all that was needed to achieve a very successful business in a relatively short time. Many customers wanted to start a business in Orihuela Costa in order to be able to spend more time here, I don’t know how many times I heard “I’d need something to do, I could not just sit around doing nothing”. So I branched out into commercial or business property. From 20012005 many entrepreneurs invested in commercial properties, some to start their own businesses, others as a rental investment. Unfortunately when the crisis hit, the first to be hurt were those who were involved in commercial properties; myself included.
Renters went out of business and owners couldn’t pay mortgages, and the same banks that were responsible the crisis in the first place were totally ruthless with those who owed them money. The business community suffered more than any other group from the crisis. Right now, on the coast we have the lowest restaurant prices in Europe. The bar prices too are very competitive. Food prices in the local supermarkets are way less than in any northern European country. Unfortunately, small enterprises are still failing, businesses are struggling. What is needed to make the situation better? We need more winter tourism. Airlines need to provide a better winter schedule. The town hall needs to provide and promote more and better winter attractions and events like the “St. Patrick’s Day Parade” in Cabo Roig. Orihuela needs to become a popular winter destination for tourists.
Information about upcoming events from the Town Hall is very limited and only a few people are well informed. Events should be planned up to a year in advance and circulated through internet mailing, circulars, free newspaper and radio releases and a good town hall sponsored “What´s on Website” promoting all things tourism related. Home owners could help by using their homes more in the off-season or to offer the use of their homes to friends and close relatives. While you are here on holidays, eat out more, the quality and value of eating out here is superb. If you get an excellent meal or a great night out, tell others about it, face to face or on Facebook or TripAvisor. The town hall could open one or more parking locations for camper`vans in Orihuela Costa. The campervan owners would be happy to pay a reasonable nightly fee for safe parking with minimal services. Our “Snowbirds” travel long distances to avail of our beautiful weather and they are prepared to use the restaurants and other businesses on the coast. The town hall could also help by insisting that the La Zenia toll removed as soon as possible. Let’s be honest: Orihuela Costa is a piece of Heaven on Earth. Let us enjoy it, let’s tell others about it, and invite our friends and family over to stay with us or in a place close by. Let’s make a habit of attending events and activities and supporting local restaurants, bars and businesses. The more tourists we have all year around, the more desirable this area is to investors. Our property prices will increase, businesses will flourish, services will improve and we will all win.

The Supremes: Baby Love
On November 19th 1964, The Supremes became the first all girl group to have a UK No.1 single when 'Baby Love' went to the top of the charts. Written and produced by Motown's main production team Holland–Dozier–Holland, it was also the second of five Supremes songs in a row to go to No.1 in the United States.
The Motown songwriting team of HollandDozier-Holland wrote this innocent song about teenage love. They wrote 14 US Top-10 hits for The Supremes. This was The Supremes' first and only song to reach #1 in the UK. The Supremes were the first girlgroup to have a Number One hit in Britain. It turned out to be The Supremes' only UK Chart Topper, though they had many more in the US. In August of 1974, this song was reissued in Britain, where it reached Number 12. This was also featured in the 1997 film Jackie Brown. Explaining how the trio wrote to NME in 1984, Lamont Dozier said: "I would collaborate with Eddie on lyrics and with Brian on melodies. Then Brian and I would go into the studio and produce the actual record although Eddie should have been put down as one of the producers because he helped teach the artists the tune when the lyric
was finished."
A musician named Lorenzo Pack filed a lawsuit against Motown in 1966, claiming the Holland-Dozier-Holland songwriting team based "Baby Love" on his 1962 song "I'm Afraid." Pack had little evidence to support his assertion, and Motown won the lawsuit. The testimony, however, revealed some insights on this song, as Brian Holland told the court: "When we write a song, we try to express real feelings about a real situation. In writing the song for The Supremes it was obvious that we were writing for pretty young girls, of whom one is the so-called lead singer. Therefore, in writing 'Baby Love,' we pictured a simple story about a girl whose boyfriend has left her and who loves him very dearly and who would like the boy to come back. The music fits this simple story." According to Rolling Stone magazine, when this song was finished, Berry Gordy thought it wasn't catchy enough and sent the group back into the studio, which is when they came up with the "Oooooh" at the beginning. This song, "Where Did Our Love Go" and "Come See About Me" were written by Holland-DozierHolland in one session and were all recorded
within two weeks. Berry Gordy required the songwriters to punch a clock when they came in and left for work at Motown, which is something he learned working for Ford. The H-D-H team was especially proficient, often completing 2 or 3 songs a day. In the studio on that day: Lead vocals by Diana Ross: Background and ad-lib vocals by Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson: All instruments by the Funk Brothers and Footstomps by Mike Valvano. This song received a Grammy nomination for Best Rhythm & Blues Recording in 1965; it lost to Nancy Wilson's "How Glad I Am." This was the second US Number One hit for The Supremes, following "Where Did Our Love Go." They were the first Motown act with two Number One hits in the USA. Considered one of the most popular songs of the late 20th century, "Baby Love" was ranked 324 on the Rolling Stone list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Robbie Williams and Craig David added to the BBC Music Awards bill Robbie Williams and Craig David were today unveiled as the latest artists set to perform at the BBC Music Awards, which returns for its third year on Monday 12 December. BBC Radio 1 DJ Gemma Cairney has also been announced as the backstage presenter, reporting all the latest news and gossip from backstage for the BBC One broadcast. Backstage Interview with I'm Mister X Who are you and what do you do? I'm Mister X - a professional magician, who does general magic, illusion manipulations and illusion with large equipment. How did you start in the business? I started as a circus variety artist in variety shows venues around Bulgaria, since I graduated at the Unique Circus School in Moscow, Russia. What would you be doing if you were not an entertainer? For me the stage is everything and I love to perform on it! I love my job as a magician! Anyway, I'm also a civil engineer, so I do have an alternative job. As an entertainer who has been your biggest influence? I was mostly influenced by the son of the legendary Bulgarian magician Miti, called Julian. I got attracted by his tricks and illusions and that determined my future life.

This is the criteria for each artist. What has been your worst moment? At the first Balkan Festival of Magicians I had to open the festival. When I got announced, I appeared on stage and the wrong music was playing which threw me for a moment, I looked at the show director and I nodded to the audience, and invited my assistant on stage. My correct music started with my performance. The audience didn’t notice that. Later on I’ve found that the director had had informed the sound master about the problem which was solved within seconds.
Do you ever get nervous or have you suffered stage fright? When I started, I was concerned about my first appearances on stage about how the audience would react, and worried that if someone in the audience is illusionist with more experience than me and what would he say. But with the time I was seeing the audience's reaction and become more confident. I love the stage and the audience and have no worries now whatsoever. Even when I run a new magic trick I'm not worried as I know I have
What’s the best piece of advice you have received or would give someone starting out in the business? I've received a lot of advice from colleagues and show directors. I'd share them with younger colleagues – the magic tricks have to be performed in front of an audience only after one is 100% sure and confident that the performance would run smooth. The hands have to do the magic trick instinctively, otherwise the audience would notice that the magician is not prepared. Any little anecdotes or interesting stories? A. I was working in a variety complex with a live orchestra, playing with real cigarettes and throwing them on the floor. One cigarette’s spark fell on the magical towels on my table, so they got on fire. When I turned around I saw the guitarist trying to extinguish the burning towels stamping them with his feet. After Hours at Lo Crispin Tavern Tell us about yourselves My name is David and I am Spanish, born and bred in this area, from Rojales. I run the Lo Crispin Tavern in Urbanization Lo Crispin near Ciudad Quesada. I am the sole owner of the bar/restaurant but fortunately also have some very good staff. I have been here since December 2008. What made you open a bar? I had a successful plastering business for a while but a few years ago I was struggling with the recession and decided I needed a different direction. A friend of mine ran a local bar/restaurant and I liked the atmosphere there and the way that many customers had become their friends. I made up my mind that this was what I wanted to do and, despite knowing that it would involve a great deal of hard work and that it would become more a way of life than a job, I decided to go for it. Where did the inspiration for the name come from? I have always liked the British people and their attitude to life so I decided that I wanted to open an English-style pub and ‘tavern’ is a good old-fashioned English word. We are situated on the Lo Crispin
Urbanization so we became the Lo Crispin Tavern. Who does the cooking? And how would you describe your style? My main chef Julia is from Russia. She has been in Spain 15 years and worked in a number of restaurants. We do a combination of traditional British and Spanish dishes. Our British customers like having the option of familiar English fayre and that of their adopted country. For good measure Julia sometimes does something Russian-style as several people have requested this. What’s your favourite dish on the menu? Chicken breast with mushroom
sauce. Don’t ask me why, I just love it! Maybe it’s the way Julia cooks it. Favourite day of the week? I think Sundays as there is so much going on. We have a carvery and later a quiz and sometimes karaoke too. We also show all the popular sports on TV and there is always something on a Sunday. Any interesting tales? The Tavern also serves as the community centre for the urbanization. This year, apart from having a Russian chef, we have had a Russian birthday party and a Russian wedding. For the birthday they asked if they could bring a live pony for the children to play with. After obtaining
the necessary licences and clearances I agreed. A good time was had by all, including the pony. The wedding party all went outside for a traditional Russian toast which involved smashing all the glasses against the wall at the end (fortunately they brought their own). A tradition I did not know about is that both bride and groom take a bite out of a loaf of bread and the one that takes the largest bite will be head of the family. The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
From 1964 thru 1968, NBC's The Man From U.N.C.L.E. TV series was a must watch for fans of Spy fiction with a touch of tongue in cheek comedy thrown in. The original idea for The Man from U.N.C.L.E. came from Norman Felton, the executive producer of the series. The outline of the original television series, one of the most successful during the Sixties and initially called 'Solo', was drafted by Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond, who was brought in as a paid consultant as it was intended to be a spoof on Bond, which was itself a spoof on the world of international espionage. Fleming, who invented the names Napoleon Solo and April Dancer, was unable to finish the work and it was taken over by the series producers Norman Felton and Sam Rolfe, Felton being responsible for the introduction of the Illya Kuryakin character and Rolfe for the name of the organisation. The name U.N.C.L.E., like its evil, global domination-obsessed adversary, THRUSH, did not originally stand for anything in particular but fan interest was so intense and persistent that the acronyms 'United Network Command for Law and Enforcement' and 'Technical Hierarchy for the Removal of Undesirables and the Subjugation of Humanity' were subsequently created. Based in a hidden H.Q. in New York City, U.N.C.L.E. is located a block from the East River at East 46th Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues, near the United Nations complex. Top U.N.C.L.E. agents Napoleon Solo (Robert Vaughn) and Illya Kuryakin (David McCallum) usually gained entry to the secret complex through a camouflaged entrance in a changing cubicle at the rear of Del Floria's cleaning outlet, the scene featuring in the opening sequence of all the TV episodes. Four other entrances were known to exist: a hinged wall in the shower area of a public garage, an underground tunnel from the river, a nightclub called The Mask Club and an entrance used by high-level personnel that was shown in the "The Mad, Mad Tea Party Affair". There was a 'Moneypenny-like' receptionist handing out security badges, whom Solo used to flirt shamelessly with, and another similarity to the James Bond productions was the featuring of high-
tech futuristic weapons and gadgetry which included a car with gull-wing doors, the U.N.C.L.E. guns (which were Walther P38s with many special attachments such as silencers and long range sights), the sophisticated security badges and, of course, the fountain pen communicator with its extending aerial and distinctive transmission sound. "Open channel D . . . ."
The series had a distinctly British flavour, both David McCallum and Leo Carroll being of that extraction. Leo was a successful West End stage actor before moving to Hollywood in 1934 and appeared in six Alfred Hitchcock films. Stunts were usually performed by David McCallum and Robert Vaughn, as well as by stuntmen, and the best-looking version was used. David McCallum wasn't great with heights and Robert Vaughn wasn't too keen on water so they tended to avoid those types of stunts. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. television series was an American production produced by Arena Productions using the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio facilities and was originally transmitted on NBC in the U.S. from 22nd September 1964 until 15th January 1968 and screened by BBC1 in the U.K. about a year later. It consisted of a total of 105, 50 minute episodes each titled ' The . . . . . Affair', such as 'The Dippy Blonde Affair' and 'The Bow Wow Affair' and each show being subdivided into several 'acts'. Every episode's screen credits included a dedication to the men and women of U.N.C.L.E. 'without whose assistance this programme would not be possible', although U.N.C.L.E. does not exist, and never has. Every two-part story was reedited into a cinema film. These were initially released in Europe, being shown later on American TV. Additional footage was shot to make up the length and make it more 'cinematic' including scenes containing additional violence or innuendo not acceptable to television. Conversely, the TV versions include some scenes
not used in the films. A reunion telefilm, Return of the Man from U.N.C.L.E. subtitled The Fifteen Years Later Affair, was broadcast on CBS in America on April 5, 1983, with Vaughn and McCallum reprising their roles, and Patrick Macnee replacing Leo G. Carroll, who had died in 1972, as the head of U.N.C.L.E. A framed picture of Carroll appeared on his desk. The movie included a tribute to Ian Fleming via a cameo appearance by an unidentified secret agent with the initials "J.B." The part was played by George Lazenby who was shown driving James Bond's trademark vehicle, an Aston Martin DB5. One character, identifying him, says that it is "just like On Her Majesty's Secret Service", which was Lazenby's only Bond film. The series was popular enough to generate a spin-off series, The Girl from U.N.C.L.E. The "girl" was first introduced during "The Moonglow Affair" (February 25, 1966) an episode of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and was then played by Mary Ann Mobley. The Girl from U.N.C.L.E. spin-off series ran for one season, starring Stefanie Powers as agent "April Dancer", a character name credited to Ian Fleming, and Noel Harrison as agent Mark Slate. There was some crossover between the two shows, and Leo G. Carroll played Mr. Waverly in both programs, becoming the second actor in American television to star as the same character in two separate series. Barbara Feldon played an U.N.C.L.E. translator eager for field work in "The Never-Never Affair," one year before becoming one of the stars of the very different spy series Get Smart. Robert Culp played the villain in 1964's "The Shark Affair." Leigh Chapman appeared in a recurring role as Napoleon Solo's secretary, Sarah, for several episodes in 1965. Among the many famous 'guest artists' to appear in the show were Vincent Price, Vera Miles, Sonny and Cher, Joan Collins, William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy (they appeared together in one episode before being cast together as the main characters in 'Star Trek' a couple of years later), Kurt Russell, Joan Crawford, Jack Palance, Janet Leigh, Richard Anderson, Joan Blondell, Roger C. Carmel, Elsa Lanchester; Yvonne Craig, Kim Darby, Ivan Dixon, Anne Francis, Richard Kiel, Angela Lansbury, Julie London, Leslie Nielsen, William Marshall, Eve McVeagh, Carroll O'Connor, Eleanor Parker, Slim Pickens, Dorothy Provine, Cesar Romero, Nancy Sinatra, Terry-Thomas, Fritz Weaver and Elen Willard in her last acting role.

Robert Vaughn, ‘Magnificent Seven,‘ ‘Man From UNCLE’ Star, Dies at 83 by Keith Nicol The original “Man From U.N.C.L.E.” has died. Robert Vaughn, who played secret agent Napoleon Solo on the 1960s spy comedy series, passed away at the age of 83, on November 11, just 11 days shy of his 84th birthday, which would have been on Tuesday. Vaughn died from complications from acute leukaemia. After appearing as an uncredited extra in “The Ten Commandments” in 1956, Vaughn landed his first breakthrough role in “The Young Philadelphians” in 1959, for which he was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar. He next appeared as gunman Lee in The Magnificent Seven (1960), a role he essentially reprised 20 years later in Battle Beyond the Stars (1980), both films adapted from filmmaker Akira Kurosawa's 1954 Japanese samurai epic, Seven Samurai. Vaughn was the last surviving member of those who portrayed The Magnificent Seven. Early in the 'new millennium' I had the pleasure of cruising with Robert Vaughn, who sadly passed away last week. The ship was the Marco Polo as she sailed from East Coast USA to Bermuda. He was onboard as an enrichment lecturer along with 'Singing In The Rain' star, Debbie Reynolds. The quiet and unassuming actor was a pleasure to chat to and he had great fun presenting his lectures about his film and TV work over the decades. He noted that he had starred in more than 150 films, many of which have been completely forgotten both by audiences and, as he once candidly admitted, by Vaughn himself. Of John Sturges western; The Magnificent Seven, where he played dapper, black-clad gunfighter, Lee, in the, The Magnificent Seven, he said that although it's now seen as a cinema classic, the film had a chaotic start which was not helped by a
writers strike in Hollywood. Vaughn described how he arrived to discover that there was no script and that Sturges had only cast two of the characters, those played by Steve McQueen and Yul Brynner. "So when Sturges met me, he actually asked if I knew any other good actors. I called my best friend James Coburn, who was hanging out with a chick, smoking dope in Greenwich Village, and told him: 'Get out here fast!' He had no money, and had to borrow some from his parents. But he made it." After seeng the runaway success generated by the first three James Bond films, Dr. No (1962), From Russia with Love (1963) and Goldfinger (1964), in 1964, Vaughn was offered his own TV series, originally titled “Solo,” in which he would play the suave secret agent Napoleon Solo. The show became “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” and Vaughn was partnered with David McCallum, who played his fellow agent and partner, Illya Kuryakin. “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” was such a success it launched spinoff series, a line of merchandise, feature films and was recently remade as a big screen feature with Henry Cavill in the Napoleon Solo role and Armie Hammer as Kuryakin.
From 1964 to 1968, Vaughn played Solo, eventually leading to a sequel The Return of the Man from U.N.C.L.E. - The Fifteen-Year-Later Affair. He added; "Not only was it a great deal of fun, it changed me from being a working actor to a negotiating actor. After U.N.C.L.E., I never accepted the first offer: if I wanted more money, I asked for it." In the year the series ended, Vaughn landed a large role playing Chalmers, an ambitious California politician in the film Bullitt starring Steve McQueen, another of the young guns in The Magnificent Seven. He starred in two seasons of the British detective series The Protectors in 1972 and 1973, which ran to 52 episodes over two series, each 25 minutes long - making it one of the last series of this type to be produced in a half-hour format. Vaughn stared with Nyree Dawn Porter (co-star of The Forsyte Saga) as the Contessa Caroline di Contini, and Tony Anholt (later to star in Space: 1999 and Howards' Way) as Paul Buchet. Vaughn appeared in two episodes of Columbo during the mid-1970s. He won an Emmy for his portrayal of Frank Flaherty in Washington: Behind Closed Doors (ABC, 1977) and during the 1980s starred with friend George Peppard in the final season of The A-Team. In 2004, after a string of guest roles on series such as Law & Order, in which he had a recurring
role during season eight, Vaughn experienced a resurgence. He began co-starring in the British TV drama series Hustle (2004-12), made for BBC One. He said: "Hustle is wonderfully enjoyable, because all my life I've made an effort to be with people who can make me laugh. That original cast - Marc Warren, Jaime Murray, Robert Glenister and Adrian Lester - are all funny. So I know every day I'll have a few good laughs." In 2006, he guest-starred in two episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit with his other recent film work including Excuse Me for Living (2012), The Magnificent Eleven (2012), A Cry from Within (2014) and this year The American Side (2016) and Gold Star. Vaughn even reached a brand new generation of viewers on 27th January 2012 when he took on the role of Milton Fanshaw in Coronation Street as a new love interest for Sylvia Goodwin (Stephanie Cole). Of Vaughn's casting, Coronation Street producer Phil Collinson commented: "I am delighted to be welcoming The Man from U.N.C.L.E. to Coronation Street. Robert was a huge part of my childhood and a magnificent actor. I am looking forward to seeing the impact this exotic character has on the ladies of Weatherfield." For the BBC they said: Vaughn's acting career never reached the heights achieved by some of his contemporaries, possibly because he devoted time to his political activities. Off screen, Vaughn was a committed political activist who had joined the Democrats in the early 1950s while at college in Minnesota.Firmly on the liberal wing of the party, he became close friends with Senator Robert Kennedy and played a major part in opposition to the Vietnam War but denied rumours he had ambitions to run for political office himself. But he had no regrets. "With a modest amount of looks and talent and more than a modicum of serendipity," he wrote, "I've managed to stretch my 15 minutes of fame into more than half a century of good fortune."

The ‘NEW Original’: Jaguar XKSS Makes World Debut In Los Angeles The first genuine Jaguar XKSS to be built in almost 60 years was today given its world debut presentation at the Petersen Museum, Los Angeles by Jaguar Classic. The stunning XKSS, finished in Sherwood Green paint, has been created by the Jaguar Classic engineering team ahead of the production of nine cars for delivery to customers across the globe in 2017. Often referred to as the world’s first supercar, the XKSS was originally made by Jaguar as a road-going conversion of the Le Mans-winning Dtype, which was built from 1954-1956.

Earlier this year Jaguar announced that its Classic division would build the nine ‘lost’ XKSS sports cars for a select group of established collectors and customers. The new one-off XKSS presented in Los Angeles is the summation of 18 months of research and will be used as a blueprint from which the nine continuation cars are built. The nine cars will be completely new, with period chassis numbers from the XKSS chassis log. All cars are now sold at a price in excess of £1million each.

combination of original drawings from Jaguar’s archive and modern technology. The Jaguar Classic engineering team scanned several versions of the 1957 XKSS to help build a complete digital image of the car, from the body to chassis, and including all parts required. Under the bonnet, the XKSS is supplied with a 262hp 3.4-litre straight six-cylinder Jaguar D-type engine. The engine features completely new cast iron blocks, new cast cylinder heads and three Weber DC03 carburettors. Inside, the ‘new original’ XKSS features perfect recreations of the original Smiths gauges. Everything from the wood of the steering wheel, to the grain of the leather seats, through to the brass knobs on the XKSS dashboard, is precisely as it would have been in 1957.
The 97-year-old man who climbed into a mustang and drove it away; passion for iconic car spans half-acentury. Thrill-seeker Lennart Ribring is looking to join the ton-up club – of drivers aged 100 and over – after buying a new 5.0-litre V8 Ford Mustang. The young-at-heart driver fell in love with Mustang after being among the first in his native Sweden to buy an original model when it was launched in the 1960s. How to spend your 97th birthday? For Lennart Ribring the answer was easy. Behind the wheel of a unique and iconic sports car. Born in 1919, when the Ford Model T had only been in production for 11 years, Lennart got his driving licence at the first opportunity, when he turned 18 in 1937. Now he has treated himself to a new Ford Mustang fastback. Capable of 155mph and 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds, the race red sports car, takes pride of place on Lennart’s driveway at his home in Stockholm, Sweden. “My name is Lennart Ribring. I’m 97-yearsold. I drive a 5.0-litre V8 Ford Mustang fastback and I’m really happy,” he says in a video that captures the moment when Lennart picks up his new car from his
local Ford dealership, takes his son Michael for a spin, and shows it off to granddaughter Emilia. Lennart, who also enjoys sailing, was among the first people in the country to buy an original Ford Mustang in the 1960s. Now, more than 50 years later, it could be that he’s one of the world’s oldest Mustang drivers. “I fell in love with the first Mustangs that came out and I have hardly thought about another car since. You felt a bit like king of the road.” said Lennart. “I don’t have long to live now, maybe. So, I want to take the opportunities I have to drive and have a little fun in life. This is the real thing.” A retired businessman who still works part-time as an accountant, Lennart also has some wise words for those who plan on still being behind the wheel when they are approaching 100. “I would encourage younger drivers to let their porridge cool down first,” said Lennart. “Learn about a car properly before you drive it. You must always think about safety.” The new Mustang, the first to go on sale across Europe since the model was first launched in the U.S., in 1964, is available as a fastback or convertible, and with a 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine, as well as the 5.0-litre V8.

Gone But Not Forgotten; Memories of the Stars
Campoverde Theatre Group performed their latest supper show from the 13th to the 16th October at Phoenix Nights, San Miguel de Salinas to great critical acclaim. The show paid tribute to some of the fantastic stars that have died during 2016. This year has seen the passing of so many famous names of stage, music and television that the show could only celebrate the work of a few of these stars. However tribute was made to Cilla Black, Victoria Wood, Ron Moody, Val Doonican, Natalie Cole, Caroline Aherne, David Bowie, Patrick Macnee and Ben E King. The audiences loved hearing songs made famous by these stars and some of the much loved sketches created by talented writers like Caroline Aherne and Victoria Wood had people in laughing even before the piece even started.
This show fully fulfilled its promise to be an evening of great entertainment and the theatre group were warmly praised for their original production. In memory of Adele Kippin, one of Campoverde Theatre Group’s longest active members, who died recently, the group decided to donate the proceeds from the show to PADS, the charity with which Adele was very actively involved. Campoverde Theatre Group would love to welcome new members. The group is a warm and welcoming, we have fun rehearing for shows and our shows help raise money for various local charities. Joining Campoverde Theatre Group is a great way to make friends, develop a new interest whether in an acting, singing, dancing or back stage capacity. Why You Need A Spanish Will by Fuensanta Alenda Andreu The European Union forced Spain to make changes to their laws, when it comes to writing out a Spanish Will and who will benefit after death. It is becoming usual (or more and more common) to file a petition before the Spanish courts on behalf of the children that were not included in the last will of their parents, British nationals and resident in Spain. Why? Last year came into force the European regulation No 650/2012, on jurisdiction, applicable law, recognition and enforcement in matter of succession and on the creation of a European Certificate of Succession. This ruling is to apply to a succession involving the death of a person on or after August 17th 2015. One of the main significant changes to the present legal situation is that to succession and wills the applicable law is that of the State of the habitual residence of the decease but rather the law of the State with which the deceased was manifestly more closely connected. But what does that really mean? According to the Spanish Civil Code, the applicable law of who should benefit after death depended upon citizenship. Due to that, foreigners would typically grant their will according to their national law not observing the fixed rules established by the Spanish Civil Code. Now that the EURegNo 650/2012 has come into force, the applicable law will be that of the place of your habitual residence
must be given to your descendants, if you have them. One third of this can be freely deposited to the person or entity of your choice; you can leave it to whomever you wish. Most of the Common Wills granted by expats here in Spain, agree to leave what they own in Spain to their partner, whether they are married or not. This will be enforceable only if the testator included in their last will that the applicable law to the inheritance is their national law. The same law applies to the whole succession, irrespective of either the type of assets (moveable or immoveable) concerned or the country of their location. If not, Spanish law will be applied and his/her children might claim their rights. at the time of death, regardless of your original citizenship. However, the term habitual residence is not legally defined in this regulation, but this is a matter is something we shall cover in further articles. The applicable law will govern, for example, the determination of the beneficiaries and their respective shares; the capacity to inherit; the powers of the heirs; the executors of the wills and the administrators of the estate and the liability for the debts under the succession. This has a special relevance, as the Spanish Civil Code is completely different, for example, than British applicable law. One of the aspects of the Spanish law, is that two thirds of your rights and properties (despite their nature: house, car, jewellery, investments, etc...),
However, before their death, a person can instead choose that the applicable law should be the law of their country of nationality or they can choose the law of where they live, but in either case, this election must be clearly included in their will. What To Do In Case Of A Car Accident

Obtain personal details of the witnesses of the accident and the occupants of the other vehicle. They will help you if you need to make a report before the authorities how the accident took place and to clarify whose fault was it. If the other party is responsible for the accident or the other driver involved in the car accident refuses to collaborate, you should take note of any details that may serve to identify them, the licence plate number, and any persons witnessing the accident, etc. Even though you might think you are not injured, we always recommend going to a Hospital or Medical Centre. Some damages, for example, a neck contracture (whiplash), appears a few hours after the accident occurs. Make sure the doctor drafts a detailed report stating the extent of any injuries resulting from the accident and a complete diagnosis. This report will be a very important factor for your lawyer. Nearly all (93%) dog parents in the U.S. say their dog has made them a better person in at least one way, according to a new study released today by BarkBox, Bark & Co's monthly box of goodies for dogs and their humans. Snow in the Sierra Bernia By David Hudson I have been asked about my travels in our 600 and with the recent heavy snow around Spain, this is a good time to start. Being Vice President of only the eleventh Spanish club to be formed in Spain, in those early days of the classic scene in Spain, the clubs supported each other fully. We started off in our SEAT 600E from Torrevieja in the dark one Sunday in January 2005, at 7.30am and to help us on our way (NOT) it was freezing and raining. Being in a car designed in the 50s it took sometime to warm up but eventually the windows cleared and we warmed up ourselves. Our destination was Benissa 150 kms north of Alicante near Denia to meet other Spanish Clubs to help the town celebrate their Feria of San Antonio with a Medieval street fair and exhibition of crafts. We were invited by the organising Club; Amics 600 Denia, to display our cars in a reserved area as part of the fiesta. At the service area near Elche we joined members from Amigos 600 Elche, resulting in a fine display of Cars and Motorcycles. Approaching Alicante the rain stopped and the sky lightened with streaks of pink and orange. Passing Benidorm it looked like a summer's day except for the foot of snow by the side of the motorway.
Only a few days before, the motorway was closed due to a large snowfall and was only opened the day before to traffic. We eventually entered Benissa and parked in the exhibition area, joining cars from Javea, Denia and Albacete. A journey of over 300 kms. Whilst waiting we let a Columbian and his two boys pose for pictures inside our car. Now it was turning very cold, so it was off to the nearest bar for a hot drink and tostadas dripping with jam. Then it was time to go for the “recorrido turistico” a drive in the country. And so with a police escort at the front and back of the convoy of classics, we were off into the unknown. Everything is done noisily in Spain, with much tooting and sirens from us, which mixed nicely with the police sirens as we passed through villages on the way up the mountains. The jagged peaks cut into the bright blue sky; everything was clean and sharp. We were now climbing sharply up the single track road. The line of 70 Classic cars snaked ahead in the snow up the mountain that lay behind Guardalest, which overlooks Benidorm. You could almost sense the excitement of the Spaniards, many of whom may have only seen snow on the television but never physically been out in it. It was now that I was pleased we had a police escort as

passing became nerve racking with sheer drops only inches away. Still there is always a sense of adventure when we go out in our little 600, especially as our Spanish friends do not know fear or worry about the unknown. Finally we arrived at the top. Everyone piled out of their cars and very soon there were snowballs everywhere. As I walked amongst the parked cars that had plates of food sitting on the roofs for anyone to help themselves, I came across Juan with a wooden barrel hanging from his neck. He asked me if I would like some “muy buen Vino Tinto”. As the liquid trickled down my throat it hit the bottom and exploded into a warm glow causing me to gasp. With a big grin on his bearded face he added “con whiskey”. Angie was explaining about building a

snowman to her Spanish friend Laura who said that they called them snow dolls “Munecas de Nieve” and immediately began building one with Angie helping. So up on top of the mountains is a snowman with a pipe. We then began our descent towards Alicante and soon burst into the sun and with it the ice and snow disappeared and we were overlooking Benidorm and the blue, sparkling sea. We were on a single track road with seemingly bottomless drops either side. It was not for the faint hearted but seeing the sea and dinky cars below in the sun it was a moment that I am glad I had experienced. On reaching the motorway it was a turn left and still with our police escort, a steady drive back to Benissa. The total length of the trip of 60kms, all of it with a free police escort. We arrived back in Benissa to again exhibit our cars for the public to enjoy. We were now free to enjoy the medieval fayre which wound itself through the narrow streets with various crafts and foods of the period. Stall holders in authentic costume
displayed their wares and some were giving displays of their craft. A display of falcons drew an interested crowd together with two large snakes that could be handled by anyone brave enough. There was a human chess game of Moors and Christians for the intelligent. But for me it was the display of Antique vehicles that included a 1927 M.G. in British Racing Green and an exhibition of impeccable motorcycles with many old Spanish makes that included a Spanish Army motorbike and sidecar from the Civil War that had two brakes: the normal one for the rider and a lever for the passenger to pull because of the extra weight that included a machine gun. The owner was a real character with many stories to tell and was happy to run the engine and explain it in detail how it all worked. Finally we sat down to a traditional meal of Cocido con Pelotas which was delicious and provided by the Town Hall of Benissa as a thank you. Then it was time to say goodbye to friends, old and new, and get into our car once more for the two hour return journey of 150 kms; and home.

Torrevieja Strengthen Their Squad Compiled by Keith Nicol After Losing 3-0 to Torre Levante last weekend, CD Torrevieja return to Torrevieja's Nelson Mandela Stadium on Sunday, for a difficult game against Elche Ilicitano. Kick off is at 5.00pm. CD Torrevieja have also signed another new player. The latest signing is Antonio Calzado Arévalo "Calzado" (Lucena, 1992). Calzado acts as a central defender and can play on either right or left side. He's characterised by being a hardworking player and team player, who is physically strong and who will bring a commanding presence in the defensive area. Calzado has played in Iceland for the last couple of months with UMF Leiknir of the 2nd Icelandic Division. Among other achievements, in his youth he was promoted to the first team of Lucena CF of 2nd Division B several times. In September of 2015 the Cordovan returned to Lucena after obtaining the promotion to the 1st Division of the Maldives Islands with United Victory. From October on, he joined the Lucena CF to later sign for Ecija Balompié in the same season

Gordon Strachan is to remain as Scotland head coach after the Scottish FA board gave the 59-yearold its "unanimous" backing. Chief executive Stewart Regan issued a statement after its review of a poor start to their World Cup campaign. "The board are convinced that he still has the hunger for this challenge and we have four home qualifiers in 2017 to rejuvenate our campaign," he said. "We support Gordon unanimously in improving our qualification prospects." There had been speculation about Strachan's position after Friday's 3-0 defeat by England at Wembley. It left the Scots in fifth place, with only four points from their opening four games in Group F. Fifa has opened disciplinary proceedings against England and Scotland for wearing poppies in Friday's World Cup qualifier. Players from both countries wore black armbands bearing a poppy during England's 3-0 win at Wembley, with the game taking place on Armistice Day. Rules forbid "political" statements on shirts. Fifa, world football's governing body, would not "speculate on any outcome or provide an estimated timeline". However, world football's governing body would
not specify before Friday's fixture whether England or Scotland would face punishment for doing so this time around. Ex-England and Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard and MK Dons have been in contact over the vacant manager's role. Manchester United will lose more than £20m in sponsorship income from Adidas if they fail to qualify for next year's Champions League. The German sportswear giant is in the second season of a 10-year, £750m deal. After announcing a fall in first-quarter revenue, United said the annual payment will reduce by 30% if they do not reach Europe's flagship competition for a second successive season. United are sixth in the Premier League, six points off the top four. "There is a clause in the Adidas contract that applies if we are missing from the Champions League for two years in a row," said United's chief financial officer Cliff Baty. "An example would be if we [were due to receive] £70m [in a given year], we would not receive £21m." The sum is taken off each year of the contract, with the first payment covering the years for which the deal - which came into force in 2015 - has been active. Baty said a failure by United to get out of the Europa League group stage this season would cost the club "single digit millions". The reduction in income is largely down to United playing three fewer home games than in the same period in 2015. Arsenal right-back Hector Bellerin has been ruled out for four weeks with an ankle injury. The 21-year-old Spaniard was injured during the the north London derby against Tottenham on 6 November. "He got injured in the last 10 seconds in a very strong tackle from Danny Rose," said Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger. Bellerin, who has played in all 11 of Arsenal's league fixtures this season, could miss eight games, including the visit of Paris St-Germain. Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu is "convinced" Lionel Messi will end his career at the club. The annual BBC Price of Football study is the biggest of its type in Europe, gathering season and matchday ticket prices from clubs across 23 leagues in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and the continent. The study also looks at how much UK clubs charge for pies, programmes, shirts, tea and away tickets. This year the BBC have analysed more than 1,000 ticket prices in six categories - cheapest and most expensive matchday ticket, cheapest away ticket and most expensive away ticket, and cheapest season ticket and most expensive season ticket. Plymouth Argyle were the only club out of 224 who declined to take part in the study.
