Living the Dream Ask any athletic teenage boy what they want to be when they grow up, and you can be sure than many of them will answer; ‘a professional footballer’. For one Torrevejense lad that dream is slowing starting to become true. This week Atlético de Madrid player Damián Agüero was back in Torrevieja to share some of his experiences with the participants in the Xpert Camps; and a pass on one or tricks in the process. Damián has been involved throughout the first phase of Xpert Soccer Camps as a monitor and coach of some of the younger players among the over one hundred attending the

campus. Damián is an alumnus of these campuses of modernization and technical improvement and following his participation in the Iker Cassillas edition of 2012, he spotted by local scouts and offered the opportunity of a trail with Atletico Madrid, where he now trains as a player while continuing his education in the Capital. During the first phase of campus, Damián worked as a monitor with a group of children participants, and took time out to answer their questions about what the life of footballer on the verge of breaking onto the professional stage, was all

about. He tried to convey his experiences to the group as a player from a club that competes at the highest level. Next season Damián will play in the Juvenile Division of Honour team, a category that can be compared to the Premiership for youth players. He will also have the chance to play in the UEFA Youth League, a competition parallel to the Champions League, that attracts top professional clubs from all over Europe. At the closing ceremony of the Xpert Camps, Torrevieja’s Councillor for Sports, Pablo Samper had a conversation with him in which Damián took a few moments and conveyed the pride in coming from the city of Torrevieja and has his own ‘deams’ of defend the ‘rojiblancos’ colours throughout Europe. The talent youngster was first spotted by former Real Madrid player and manager of FC Torrevieja at the time, Casimiro Torres, who played him as a 15 year old in the town’s team. What we can be sure of is that as Damián gets older and pushes his way into the Atlético de Madrid first team, that Damián Agüero will carry the name of Torrevieja beyond where he plays with his club. The talented eighteen year old is one of the jewels of Atletico Madrid and is delighted to have made it into the ‘Albirroja U20’ squad. Damien is one of the many Paraguayans who had to leave Paraguay child. Like many others, he came to Spain with his mother when he was just nine, as she wanted a better future for him. Damian not only plays for Atletico but being a member of their Academy system, is also studying at an institute, which is paid for by the club. As with many Academies, the Madrid team requires that their players gain educational qualifications, as well as being sportsmen. Besides offering him room and board and a place at their centre of excellence and paying for schooling, the ‘albirrojo’ also supports him financially to cover his personal expenses. "I'm not complaining. I think what you get is more than enough, depending on how much you spend each week,” said the talented player. The Paraguayan footballer confessed that his dream, rather than his obsession, is to break into the Paraguayan national Under Twenty team along with awaiting his opportunity to feature with the first team of Atletico Madrid. Although saying that, Atlético de Madrid’s Damián Agüero is a star of the future and Spain could soon come knocking on his door to play for them instead. All of here at the Coastrider wish Damián the very best for his future and remember the name: Damián Agüero because you just might have read about him here first.

‘Habanera’ set free

EDITORS MESSAGE

Late in the afternoon of July 25th, 2014 staff of the Municipality of Torrevieja, under the existing protocol in this city for the care of marine fauna stranding, rescued a loggerhead turtle, that one year later was set free again after treatment. The animal was taken to the facilities of the Real Club Nautico of Torrevieja until staff from the Department of Environment of the Generalitat Valenciana C.I.F. No.: B53833497

transferred him to ARCA Sea Oceanographic in Valencia. Being rescued during the celebrations of the 60th International Contest of Habanera and Polyphony, the turtle was dubbed ‘Habanera’. The animal was treated for injuries and cuts to the head. According to the nature of injuries, it seems that they were caused by the propeller of a boat, which had caused a serious fracture at the top of the skull and affecting the left eye and nasal passages. The extreme resistance of these animals facilitated their survival at sea for days, but also complicated the state of the wound. After a long and complex surgery in the veterinary service Oceanográfic, it was possible to save the eye of the tortoise and reconstruct the face. Because of the severity of the injury, recovery of the loggerhead turtle has been very slow, receiving continued attention

from the team of caregivers from Oceanographic in Valencia. In fact, the turtle had to be tube fed for more than nine months, as it was unable to move its jaw and therefore eat normally. After almost a year, of effort and dedication, it is extremely rewarding for all the professionals in one way or another, to have been involved in the recovery of "Habanera" from the first moment of capture, to see how it has fully recovered and for his release into the sea where it was found, to continue navigating the Mediterranean. The turtle was released off the coast of Torrevieja just after noon on Thursday 9th July. Habaneras remained on the surface until the boats covering the event moved. About 20 minutes later, the animal submerged without a problem and began to swim offshore.

La Siesta-El Chaparral Park comes to a standstill Work on the expansive La Siesta- El Chaperal Park has come to a standstill, after the local government said they would have to look further into the project and the costs involved. The former Councillor for Parks and Gardens Carmen Gomez Candel, now Torrevieja’s opposition councillor for the Municipal Group of the Partido Popular (PP), says that after meeting with the neighbours of the La SiestaEl Chaparral Urbanisation, who have indicated their dissatisfaction because work on the park has been paralyzed and left unfinished. They are not the only disappointed people because those employed and being trained to work on the green area, which was being carried out by pupils from the VIII Mediterranean Employment workshop have found themselves unemployed again. Candel is calling for the government team to restart the work in order to finalise it, given that this technical project was approved before the election, wok is well underway and contracts will come to an end once the Employment Workshop is finished. Because of the dimensions of the landscaping involved, it was impossible to complete the work in six months because the pupils were also having obligatory technical training. Carmen Gomez Candel reminded everyone that this project was approved by decree of the previous PP government team and from mid April a file was initiated for the “Contact of supplies and work to be carried out in the green area situated in the streets Bizet, Granados and Henry Matisse in Torrevieja” with a retention of credit to the value of 962,885.26 Euros which were reserved exclusively for this work. The neighbours of the Urbanisation La Siesta-El Chaparral have informed the Municipal Popular Group that they have been told by the current government team that the work cannot be finalised because the project does not exist and neither do the funds. Candel countered and said “These statements are completely false, which can be proved by

referring to the file and therefore it is to be hoped that these funds arrive at their true destination and are not used for other purposes which we know nothing about.” Carmen Gomez Candel also does not understand that the new Employment Workshop “La Laguna”, granted to Torrevieja Town Hall, will begin in October because on the page of the Generalitat of Valencia, on which is listed the projects that are approved for the Alicante province, it can be seen that the period of time foreseen is from 01/07/2015 to 31/12/2015. Candel explained; “this means that if the selection of personnel takes one month, this could have been started at the beginning of the month of August. This could have provided an income to 30 families in Torrevieja, who have been two months without any work. This is what the new government team class as social politics and the fight against unemployment.”

In May, prior to the elections, Candel Gómez said; “These works will significantly improve this broad area of El Chaparral, which until recently was looking overgrown and in poor condition. It’s already looking much better with the improvement of this green space that will also feature an installation of automatic irrigation, two roundabouts with fountains, benches, trees for shade, a lawn, sports facilities with basketball, handball, football, mini football pitches for smaller children, skateboarding, skating, 14 petanque courts, and a playground split into four distinct parts incorporating a biosaludables area and two pet agility aeas, for instance.” The Councillor for Parks and Gardens stressed that the area of around 40,000 square meters, has been designed so that it “tries to satisfy all the needs of users, both for children and youth and adults and it will become widely used by residents of the area, as it happens with the Salt Queen Park in the Los Balcones area. Carmen Candel Gómez recalled that the Workshop for Mediterranean Employment VIII is offering specialties in Gardening (10 students), Irrigation and Drainage (10 students), Masonry (10 students) and Paver-Adoquinador (10 students). For the implementation of the project, the Valencian Employment Service and Training department (SERVEF) has awarded the City of Torrevieja the amount of 362,643€ with the total cost of the project being 1,129,801€. The PP also noted that in relation to the public declarations given by the councillor for Employment, Victor Ferrández, Candel added: “We can point out to him that he does not need to be rigorous in contracting the pupil-workers, since SERVEF supplies those who have the profile required from amongst the unemployed people of Torrevieja. Regarding the contracting of the suppliers for the implementation of the workshop, we say to the councillor for Employment that he also does not need to worry about this because the Law of Contracts is for this purpose, which is something Mr Victor Fernández should know.

The passing of Ángel Andreu Huertas

ONE OF Torrevieja’s most loved and respected characters passed away on Sunday night. Although very few of us may have met him, he was trend setting photographer in his day and we have him to thank for capturing some of the most iconic images of the City of Torrevieja, from the days of Spain’s Civil War to the present day. Ángel Andreu Huertas passed away on Sunday evening at age 88, after an passionate life, while surrounded by the love of his family. Angel Andreu Huertas, was the father of another iconic Torrevieja photographer, Jose Maria Andreu Montesinos "Canico" whom, whether you know it or not, you have probably seen working around the city of Salt. Angel was an

essential character in his time as a social photographer and captured a unique collection of images, renowned for their quality, quantity and unforgettable moments of the short history of the city. His ‘hobby’ was inherited his son, ‘Cano’, and his work became the benchmark for all who love photography and Torrevieja. In 2010 he received the International Caregiver of the Year Award for his work caring for his wife. Angel Andreu is also father of Manuel Antonio Andreu Montesinos. Their sons and daughters, Finuca and Nati, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren are grateful for the outpouring of support they have received from everyone. Ángel Andreu Huertas RIP.

Widow claims somebody tried to Mexican Wife Gets Fined And Jailed For 'Refusing To Do The Ironing' turn her husband into a mummy

A Tippecanoe County court is still trying to determine whether a woman accused of not reporting her husband’s death, while still collecting his benefits, is competent to stand trial. But Ila Solomon still insists her husband had only been dead for five days when his body was discovered last year. Solomon is accused of keeping Gerald “Scooter” Gavan’s body inside their Shawnee Avenue Home for nine months after his death. Solomon says she left the home two days after he died, and she believes that’s when someone placed several kerosene heaters and dehumidifiers inside the home to speed up the body’s decomposition. She believes someone was trying to prevent her from making a claim to Gavan’s trust fund. Although an autopsy determined Gavan died sometime in June of 2013, Solomon

claims he died on April 28, 2014. “Oh, it definitely was very far along. Scooter was a mummy,” Solomon told WISHTV’s sister station WLFI. “There’s a lot of people who know how to make a mummy.” She claims there were several people who saw Gavan during the time when the autopsy claims he was dead. “Scooter’s done business with different people here in town during that whole ninemonth time period,” said Solomon. “He had friends that he’s walked the mall with, and those kinds of things, that know that he was alive during that nine-month time period.” Solomon faces nine criminal charges including welfare fraud and failure to report a dead body. She’s scheduled to be evaluated on July 29 to determine whether she is competent to stand trial. A hearing has been scheduled for Aug. 14.

Chinese cheerleaders fired after winning free BBQ meal

No-one likes ironing but assuming your better half will pick up the arduous task is a tad prehistoric to say the least. To have police officers arrest your wife for not doing your shirts is not only horribly sexist but also should be a divorce-able offence. Dulce Requena Garcia, 21, was taken to the nearby police station in Tampico, Mexico where she was fined the equivalent of £16, and as she did not have the ready cash she was locked up for 12 hours instead. The guilty husband and truck driver, Edgar Ivan Perez Alvarado, complained that when he got home after work he wanted a change of clothes to go out with friends, his wife refused to iron them. This beleaguered lady then accused him of heading out to see his mistress - what cheek. Frustrated over her refusal, he called police telling them that she spent too much time in

front of the television and not enough time doing the housework. A Judge fined her 400 Mexican Pesos (£16) and her inability to pay meant a half day in the cells So - If you believe in equality between the sexes, don’t expect to find in the judges of this particular Central American state.

Hartfield: The owner of the Gallipot Inn stumbled upon an old discarded bus stop sign which inspired a cheeky but effective plan to get buses to stop outside his pub. John Hawkridge, owner of the tavern for the past couple of years, apparently found the old sign in a hedge about four miles away from his business. The canny entrepreneur immediately realized he could put it to good use. For a bit of a laugh, he erected the sign outside the Gallipot Inn, not expecting much to come of the

endeavour other than a few laughs among this regulars. But in a happy twist of fate for drinkers in the area, the local bus companies started serving the fake stop, so much so that it has now been added to the official timetable. As Hawkridge said, “We bought the Gallipot about two years ago and I just thought it would be good to have a bus stop by the pub. I put it there, I put in my own sign, and a couple of customers started queuing up. . . and buses started stopping.”

When authorities found Henry drunk and naked in a hog barn near Millersville, Pennsylvania, on June 26, he told them point blank: "I just like pigs," according to WPVI TV. Henry, 64, also told cops that he had finished a six-pack of, fittingly, Hamm's beer during his pig party, according to Local21News.com. Henry was very familiar with the farm where he chose to go high on the hog. He was

banned from the property after a 2011 trespassing incident, Lancaster Crime Watch reports. Henry was charged with indecent exposure, criminal trespass, defiant trespass and public drunkenness, but was released after paying $25,000 unsecured bail. He is due in court later this month, LancasterOnline.com reports. The hogs were unavailable for comment.

A promotion run by a restaurant in China’s Shanxi Province has led to several cheerleaders from a local basketball team being fired after allegedly “eating so much free BBQ that they no longer could fit into their outfits”. A new BBQ restaurant in Taiyuan was trying to attract customers by inviting a group of cheerleaders to attempt the recent “belly-button touching craze” that has spread across Chinese social media. In an attempt to lure as many cheerleaders as possible, the restaurant offered unlimited BBQ for any girl successfully holding the pose for at least 1 minute. What the restaurant’s owners didn’t realize (but probably should’ve anticipated)

is that these girls are incredibly flexible, and practically the whole team succeeded in the challenge. The story has an amusing footnote, as multiple cheerleaders reportedly chomped their way through so much free brisket and ribs that they were unable to squeeze into their tight cheerleading costumes before the next match. The cheerleading coach, who also attempted the challenge but failed, was merciless in her response, axing those who had gained too much weight. Coach Irene Chen declined a request for an interview, but commented that the fired members “may be reinstated to the team as long as they return to their normal sizes”.

Gone are the days of worrying about having your car keys, wallet, purse, mobile phone, kindle, tablet or belongings stolen while you go for a swim as now you can securely lock up your things yet access and lock them away, time and time again. The innovative idea was two years in the planning and permission stages alone. The entrepreneurs behind the project are Koen Mortelmans and Jef Van Hyfte from Belgium, two very successful businessmen from the world of event management. Jef said, “I was swimming one day in La Mata and my girlfriend mentioned that wouldn’t it be a good idea if we had somewhere to safely leave our stuff while we went for a swim. And thus, the idea was born.”

The lockers operate from 10.00am until 9.00pm everyday, are powered by solar energy and allow you to open and close your locker, to access it as often as you wish for just a 5.00€ rental charge although rental charges by the hour or just for wifi are available too. The unit takes coins or credit/debit cards, has an information touch screen and after depositing your money, a unique token is provided along with a wrist band; a locker opens and this is yours for the day. Just scan your token and the locker opens. It’s the perfect solution for your peace of mind on the beach, without having to leave someone guarding your stuff, trying to keep an eye on it while you swim or just hoping that nobody steals your belongings while you are gone. They are completely automatic and don’t require an attendant sitting there all day, although help is at hand if required. For more information, visit their website at www.beachlocker.es or email jef@mobilelocker.eu.

Gold and Silver for Pati

Record holder Sara Acs, "Pati" has her eyes set on Europe for 2016 IT WAS yet another medal haul for Torrevieja swimmers last weekend, this time in Barcelona. Three weeks after the swimmers from the Club de Natación Imas de Torrevieja participated in the national championships in her class where she won four gold medals with four Spanish records, torrevejense swimmer Sara Acs, "Pati" as she is known was doing it again. This weekend she travelled to Barcelona with four other companions of its club to participate in the CHAMPIONSHIP OF SPAIN JUNIOR-SENIOR of Finswimming, held in pools Sportiu Club Mediterrani. PATI give an exhibition of speed, style and grace winning the gold in the 100m, 200m and 400m and silver in the 50m, all in the category of surface swimming. Pati is just a

first-year cadet and swam a guest wildcard in the junior event against the best swimmers in this category nationwide, some of whom are two and three years older than her. The Torrevejense swimmer resumed her training yesterday, Monday for competition racing next season with her goal to reach European level. Her coach said: “Pati has tremendous talent, plus the physical and mental capacity to work hard, give 100 percent effort and put in the sacrifice while training here is helping her achive her goals, thanks in part to the quality of the facilities of the Sports City of Torrevieja. She only needs to improve slightly to reach the European championships. It will be only a formality. She only needs a little more time.”

Keep your passport safe Look after your passport: is the message from the British Embassy this summer. With tens of thousands of British residents living in Spain, and millions of UK visitors heading for Spanish holiday resorts and beaches this summer, the Foreign Office has launched a video campaign to help Britons avoid the threat of passport thieves. Out of the 15 million British tourists who came to Spain last year, more than 3000 reported their passports stolen and almost 1800 reported their passport lost 1. Worldwide, more than 20,000 British passports were either lost or stolen in 2014-15. To make people more aware of the risks, stealth crime expert and ‘Man of Steal’ James Freedman has worked with the Foreign Office to create a series of videos 2 that show the techniques used by passport thieves, and offer advice on how to avoid becoming a victim. You can watch them on the Foreign Office YouTube channel at: www.youtube.com/user/fcotravel. James Freedman says: “Pickpockets and thieves constantly evolve their techniques and tactics. These videos show just a handful of ways that a pickpocket might attempt to steal from you, so remember some basic advice to stay safe. “If you don’t need to take your passport with you, leave it in your hotel safe instead. Only carry what you need and keep valuables in a secure pocket. If you have a bag or case, never let it out of your sight. Be more alert in crowds and wary of anyone getting too close. Finally, try not to advertise the location of prized possessions by patting your pockets or bags.” British nationals in Spain tell of a range of hustle techniques used against them, including: A bunch of children surrounding you and patting you whilst begging for money. After they leave you discover they have also picked your pockets and bag. Being followed onto a crowded underground train by two apparent ‘nuns’, who then pickpocket your wallet. Having a bag stolen from your car while leaving it momentarily unlocked to go to a rubbish bin, even though you are only a few feet away. Being asked to help get something from a top shelf whilst your pocket is then picked. Being pricked with a sharp object that is enough to draw blood, and in the confusion your bag disappears. Dealing with a lost or stolen passport can be expensive and time-consuming. The victim may need to report the theft to the police, and spend time and money at the local British Consulate getting an emergency travel document. The British Embassy offers five top tips for keeping your passport safe: 1. If you need to carry your passport, ensure it is well

concealed 2. Never take your eye off a bag or case, even for a moment 3. Be alert in crowds and wary of anyone getting too close or seeking to distract you 4. When driving, keep your valuables secure and out of sight – and be aware of thieves using distraction techniques either on the road or when you park 5. Avoid advertising the location of your passport and valuable possessions by patting your pockets or bags It is also a good idea to leave a photocopy of your passport with friends or family, or store an electronic copy securely. If your passport is lost or stolen, you can report it to the Spanish police by calling +34 902 102 112 (a multilingual service). If you need to travel urgently, you can apply for an emergency travel document at the nearest British Consulate (visit www.gov.uk/emergency-travel-document or call + 34 917 146 300). For more information about living in or visiting Spain, go to www.gov.uk or follow the British Consulate on social media via: Facebook: Brits living in Spain and Brits visiting Spain on Twitter: @BritsliveSpain and @BritsvisitSpain Last year 3,008 passports reported stolen and1781 reported lost in Spain in 2014-15. Europol knocks out mobile cybercrime gang in Spain Europol and la policía española have taken down a gang of alleged cybercriminals engaged in a fraudulent phone calls scam, said to have caused financial damaged estimated at €2m, as part of an operation codenamed "Walker". Coordinated police action in Barcelona on 6 July resulted in the arrest of nine suspects and the dismantling of a sophisticated illegal call centre, which the cybercrime gang had used to make fraudulent phone calls to premium service numbers set up and managed by other members of the criminal group based outside the EU. Europol states that the investigation aimed to target the gang and its accomplices, apparently involved in fraud, using tourists' stolen phones. The police raided six houses on Monday, and seized numerous pieces of evidence, including over 100 mobile phones and stolen SIM cards, more than €10,000 in cash, as well as credit cards, computer equipment and other devices which have now been taken away for further forensic examination. The group, which received mobiles stolen from tourists in Spain, harvested the foreign mobile numbers (until they were blocked by the telecom operators in their countries) to make premium calls, before then attempting to launder the stolen money abroad. Law enforcement analysed thousands of financial transactions to reconstruct the money flows and destinations across several jurisdictions. The criminal group relied on a

network of accomplices who operated the destination bank accounts. Late last year, a Welsh primary school teacher was left with a £15,000 bill after his phone was stolen in Barcelona, reported the Guardian, noting another case in which a recruitment worker was charged £21,000 by Vodafone after her phone was stolen in the Catalonian capital, though the charge was eventually dropped. The rising profile of such incidents lead then culture secretary Maria Miller to announce in December 2014 that the government and the four major mobile service providers – EE, Vodafone, Virgin Media, and Three – had agreed to cap bills on phones that were reported stolen. Contrary to the relatively recent protections instituted to insulate consumers from additional losses to crime, International Revenue Sharing Fraud has been an established criminal activity since before the turn of the millennium. While call detail records will provide obvious evidence of

such fraud, there are very few security practices currently in place to prevent it. Many service providers do not have an alarm system in place to detect it. Europol states that the global estimated illegal income from this type of crime is greater than €45m, annually.

A Little Crime Prevention

ONE OF Spain’s expatriate success stories has been that of the Neighbourhood watch. Crime rates have fallen dramatically on some the Southern Costa Blanca’s neibourhoods, as neighbours watch out for one another and report any suspicious actions to their team leader of police. But during the summer, some people relax too much, leave their brains at home and forget they still need to keep their wits about them. Thankfully, the Orihuela Costa Neighbourhood Watch have these few words of advice, to keep you safe and secure this summer. Normally crime on the Orihuela Costa is very low and probably less than in a visitor’s home country. However, many visitors come here for the sun, sand, sea and just to relax. This is a tourist area and in addition to visitors, thieves looking for easy pickings come as well but for a different reason. Starting upon your arrival at the airport: guard your luggage. Don’t put handbags and wallets on the luggage trolley and never enter into conversation with people you do not know. If you have hired a car look out for the “representative” asking you to leave everything in the car and return to the desk. Never do this. Always keep your valuables and belongings with you. Never hand them over to anyone who says they will ‘take care of them’ for you, because it may be the last time you ever see them. Once in your hire car, an on the way to your destination, be aware of being followed. If you are flagged down by anyone in civilian clothes in a plain car showing you a badge do not stop. The Police in Spain do not stop you in plain cars except for the Guardia Civil Trafico who illuminate a stop sign and are in uniform. If in doubt, drive to a police station and get out of the car there. Once at your destination, don’t leave your car doors unlocked while you bring luggage into the hotel or your residence. Always lock

the car door after you, even if only for a few seconds. When you relax on the patio or in the pool always shut and lock house windows and at night close all vulnerable windows and never leave anything on show from outside. Visiting the beach is where thieves have it easy. So make it especially difficult for them. If you drive to the beach, do not leave anything on show in the car and especially do leave keys or papers with your address thereon. Do not take anything to the beach, which you do not need there. And never leave bags etc there whilst you are in the sea, even if a stranger offers to keep an eye on them. On La Zenia Beach, they have a smart Beach Locker system. For a few euros you can lock everything safely away and return as often as you wish for your wallet, mobile phone and car keys. It’s a great system and allows to relax and the beach and enjoy yourself. When you are visiting shops and especially any of the outdoor markets, be very careful. Again only take with you what you will need. Do not leave things in car whilst inside. Once inside shopping or in the market, be especially aware of distraction thefts, people being asked to reach high shelves or causing a commotion, or pretending to wipe dirt off your shoulder. On leaving, beware of the person asking advice or directions whilst you are loading the car. Load first. Lock the doors and then answer any questions. When going out at night or anytime you are visiting a bar or restaurant, just take with you what you will need, including handbags. Never show wallets open with plenty of money. Thieves use bars to spot vulnerable people that they can attack on their way home. The members of Orihuela Costa Neighbourhood Watch hope that you all enjoy a wonderful holiday in our areas and

come back again. By following this advice your holiday may not be spoilt and you will relax and enjoy yourself all the more. If police, ambulance or fire service are required phone 112. You can speak in Spanish, English, German or one of the Scandinavian languages. All you have to do is say. “English Please’ and possibly repeat this a

few times, until an English speaking agent answers the phone. If you have a foreign mobile your call will automatically be transferred to the control centre. The police here are very efficient and want to help avoid this kind of petty crime, as the entire region depends on tourism and staying safe and secure.

Charity Events

Walking for Life 13,322€ WAS the fantastic total raised by Maria and The Pink Ladies Walk For Life on Sunday June 7th. A huge contribution to The AECC cancer charity to assist their work in research, and funding the early detection screening programme. Maria said "this is fantastic, and now means that the charity has raised over 220,000€ since we started in 2010. Thanks to the generous people of The Orihuela Costa, and the voluntary work of our Pink Ladies and Pink Panthers. Well done everyone. " Details will be announced soon about Maria and The Pink Ladies End Of Summer Ball, which will hopefully raise more funds for fighting cancer.

Thanks from Caritas CARITAS HELD another event recently back on June 6th at the Rusty Nail in Campoverde. A total, after other donations had been received was a for a grand Total of 668.86. The first prize on the raffle was a Samsung Tablet valued at 125€, plus several other prizes. Jimmy the landlord at Rusty, once again put on a free buffet, while The Portobello ladies supplied the casino free of charge for the night, and once again, Brian Jenkins showed that Elvis is not quite ready to leave the building, performing his Music of the 50’s and 60’s and even with his own tribute to the music of “Elvis”, and all for free. The last event was even better attended, a Country night, but we believe the main reason was the football match, the Champions Cup final between Juventas and Barcelona, something we had overlooked and even “Elvis”, had to wait until it was over. Once again a great big thank you to all who

Milestone birthdays & how to celebrate them Whether it’s 50, 60, 70 or 80 candles on the cake, the big milestone birthdays are worth celebrating – it’s a chance to look back on all the wonderful moments in your life and highlight all the positive aspects of ageing. A big surprise party isn’t the only way to mark the passage of time as the next decade in your life turns over; there are dozens of things you can do to celebrate you birthday in style. Whether planned or spontaneous, extravagant or pared back, we’ve put together a list of ideas to help you mark the next big milestone. Throw a party Throwing a party is a classic way to celebrate a milestone birthday – there are endless possibilities of what you could do, from something informal and relaxed to a big event planned months in advance. Think about how you could incorporate moments from your life into the party itself, perhaps through a slideshow of old photographs or by making a playlist of songs you loved as a teenager. A costume party or themed night is another great way to let loose; a Swinging 60s or Psychedelic 70s party will incorporate nostalgia into the celebration, while a special wine tasting or poker night is a chance to indulge in something a little more sophisticated. Seek thrills If throwing a party doesn’t qualify as your idea of fun, planning a new experience might be a better option for you. Many people use a milestone birthday as an opportunity to seek thrills and try something truly daring – white water rafting, surfing, sky diving and bungee jumping are all once-ina-lifetime experiences you could plan to really mark the occasion and make it memorable. Take a roadtrip The famed and fabled Route 66 across the USA is an adventure many of us dream of doing but never actually take. On your next milestone birthday, why not rent a car and head out on the open road; there are famous scenic routes all over the globe, from Australia’s Great Ocean Road to Scotland’s A82 highway that winds through the lush green valleys of Glencoe. Treat yourself A milestone birthday is the perfect excuse to treat yourself and could be the right opportunity to finally invest in something you’ve needed – or wanted – for years. Many

people choose a milestone birthday as the moment to buy a sports car, a treasured piece of jewellery or even a rare bottle of whiskey. Treating yourself doesn’t need to be extravagant; it could be as simple as buying a new golf club or some high-end skincare that you can enjoy everyday. Plan a retreat Milestone birthdays often cause us to pause and take stock of our lives so far – both the things we’re proud of and the things we want to change. Joining a retreat or conference is an excellent way to make time for something that gets put on the back burner in everyday life – there are fitness and health retreats to help you get back on track, cooking retreats where

you can indulge your passion for cooking, or even artist and writer’s retreats to give you the time and space to finally get your masterpiece started. Get back to nature Experiencing the wonders of nature is another way to mark a milestone – if you love to walk, why not plan a more ambitious trek with a few friends or family members? Cycling, walking, hiking and canoeing challenges offer the chance to enjoy the great outdoors and gain that real sense of achievement that comes with taking on a big challenge. If you want a more relaxed pace, a camping trip is another inexpensive idea that can help make your birthday special.

Healthy living for older people Staying active There’s no doubt that keeping active makes us feel more energetic. But there are other more specific benefits, including helping to: • manage high blood pressure and angina • keep you at a healthy weight • maintain regular bowel movements • stimulate a poor appetite • strengthen muscles and bones, reducing the risk of falls and fractures • ease discomfort if you have arthritis or Parkinson’s. Regular exercise also boosts the brain chemicals that lift your mood and make you feel happy – so it can be a good way to deal with stress and anxiety. The 4 building blocks to being active Developing and maintaining stamina, strength, flexibility and balance are particularly important as you get older, and can help you carry out everyday tasks more easily, as well as enjoy activities more. Stamina helps you to walk longer distances, swim and mow the lawn. Strength helps you to climb stairs, carry shopping, rise from a chair and open a container. Flexibility helps you to bend, get in and out of a car, wash

plus two sessions of musclestrengthening activity a week. Moderate activities Moderate activity may leave you feeling warm and a little breathless. It can include: • walking fast • cycling on level ground • playing a motion sensor game on a computer console like a Wii or Xbox • hand washing the car. Exercises that help strengthen your muscles can include dancing, heavy gardening and yoga. Lifting bags of shopping or weights can help to strengthen the muscles in your arms and wrists. More vigorous activity If you’re already active, you can improve your fitness and health by doing 75 minutes of vigorous activity a week. This can include: • running • cycling fast or up hills • climbing stairs • playing tennis or football. your hair and get dressed. Balance helps you to walk and climb steps confidently, stand from a sitting position and respond quickly if you trip. Any amount of extra activity that’s appropriate for your age group and health makes a difference. If you’re generally fit and have no health conditions that limit your ability to move around, the Government recommends that you build up to doing two-and-a-half hours of moderate activity each week,

Medical note If you haven’t been very active before, always build up gradually and speak to your GP before increasing your activity levels significantly. Everyday activities, such as shopping and housework, don’t count towards your two-and-a-half hours of moderate activity as they don’t increase your heart rate enough – but doing any activity is better than none at all.

How to Care for Sensitive Teeth

Many of us say we have “sensitive teeth.” We usually mean that we feel twinges of pain or discomfort in our teeth in certain situations. These may include: • Drinking or eating cold things • Drinking or eating hot things • Eating sweets • Touching the teeth with other teeth or the tongue • Breathing cold air Over half of us experience the twinge of sensitive teeth at some point in our lives — 30 percent of us suffer daily — and it’s a problem that seems to be on the rise. One of the most common dental complaints, it tends to peak in the 30-50 age group. Women are consistently shown to suffer more, although no one knows why. Causes: One culprit is receding gums — they expose the sensitive dentine roots of the teeth not covered by protective enamel. Receding gums become more common with age, but they’re also caused by over-brushing, which wears them away, or under-brushing and not flossing, which can lead to disease and shrinkage. Certain foods and drinks can contribute, too. Anything acidic will slightly dissolve the enamel. That means sugary foods and drinks; anything frizzy, including carbonated water; and fruit and fruit juice — particularly rhubarb and grapefruit. Wines, vinegars, pickles and lemon juice can have the same effect. Other causes can include gastric reflux, where acid comes up to the mouth from the stomach. People with eating disorder like bulimia often have sensitive teeth, thanks to acid erosion from vomiting. Excessive teething grinding can wear enamel away, and tooth-whitening procedures can cause temporary sensitivity. What You Can Do: A few tweaks to your dental regime and diet really could help: Avoid hard-bristled brushes. It’s a good idea to avoid hard-bristled brushes and aggressive scrubbing. Choose a medium bristle or, better still, an electric toothbrush. It’s almost impossible to over-brush with one, and you’ll keep

sensitivity. It appears that the potassium works by calming the nerve of the tooth, which prevents the transmitting of painful stimuli. Denquel was introduced as a competing brand, with the alternate potassium nitrate formula. After that, Sensodyne introduced a potassium nitrate formula version. Now there are several brands available with both of these formulas, and they all appear to work well. It’s a case of finding one that works for your particular pattern of sensitivity. If you try one formula and it doesn't work, it may help to try the other formula. For best results, put the toothpaste onto a dry brush, so it’s not diluted, and spit — but don’t rinse — after you’ve finished. Floss daily. Do not avoid flossing your teeth; it’s an important part of proper dental hygiene. You should do it at least once a day after brushing

gums cleaner, so disease is less likely. Oral B Triumph 9900 Toothbrush with Smart Guide comes with a wireless display that includes a warning signal if you are brushing your teeth too hard. If the device registers you are brushing too hard, a red light will appear on the monitor which signals you to lighten up on the pressure. Another feature on this wireless device is a circle which is divided into the quarters of your mouth, showing you which areas you have already brushed. This helps to prevent over-brushing of one area of your mouth. Bring on the desensitizing toothpaste. It’s also worth trying products specifically designed for the issue. There are two formulations of toothpastes that treat sensitive teeth: strontium chloride and potassium nitrate. Sensodyne was the original toothpaste for treating sensitive teeth; its active ingredient was strontium chloride. When your roots are exposed, you may have open pores in your tooth dentin that lead straight to the pulp of your tooth. Merely touching this surface can provoke pain. Cold or air can also cause pain. Strontium chloride, the ingredient in the original Sensodyne formula, plugs these pores or tubules. Later on, a potassium nitrate toothpaste formula was introduced, which is also very effective in treating tooth

your teeth. Avoid sugary, fizzy and diet drinks. While it’s probably best to avoid sugary, fizzy and diet drinks, don’t abstain from fruit, juice or other healthy but acidic foods — just don’t brush within 20 minutes (and ideally an hour) of consuming them. Salvia helps neutralize the acid on your teeth and if you brush straightaway, you’ll interfere with this process, as well as rinsing away any temporarily softened enamel. So brush your teeth before breakfast, not after. Drink everything through a straw. Start protecting your smile today by drinking everything through a straw. Position the straw towards the back of your mouth. This will limit the amount of time the beverage is in contact with your teeth. Up your intake of coenzyme Q10. There is some evidence has linking gum disease to lower levels of coenzyme Q10, an antioxidant made naturally in the body, found widely in foods, and available in supplement form. Wear a mouth guard. If you grind your teeth in your sleep, then you should ask your dentist about getting a mouth guard to wear in your sleep. This will help prevent grinding your teeth which can lead to sensitivity. See your dentist. If the pain is very high in intensity and prolonged, see your dentist.

Get Moving, Feel Better and Live Longer Want to feel better, have more energy and perhaps even live longer? Look no further than old-fashioned exercise. The merits of exercise — from preventing chronic health conditions to boosting confidence and self-esteem — are hard to ignore. And the benefits are yours for the taking, regardless of age, sex or physical ability. We were made to move. It is what our bodies were built for. Exercising will: • Help lower blood pressure • Increase levels of good HDL cholesterol • Cut heart attack, and diabetes risk • Reduce insulin needs if you have diabetes • Reduce colon cancer risk • Keep bones and joints strong • Control weight • Promote better sleep • Improve mood • Ease depression • Put the spark back into your sex life The older you are, the more important exercising becomes. Your metabolic rate slows down and you need fewer calories to maintain your correct weight. Weight-bearing exercise is also needed to help prevent osteoporosis in aging bones. You may find the threat of a future illness is not enough motivation to change your habits now. There can be many reasons for not taking up exercise, including:

• Lack of time due to work or family commitments • Cost of equipment or gym membership • Lack of facilities nearby • Personal safety when exercising outdoors alone • Poor weather or night-time lighting However, there are ways to overcome all of these potential barriers and work exercise into your daily life. This could include getting off

the bus to work one or two stops earlier than usual. Make it a daily challenge to find ways to move your body. "Think 'move' in small increments of time," recommends Nerys Purchon in her book The Essential Natural Health Bible. "It doesn't have to be an hour in the gym, or a 45-minute aerobic dance class. That's great when you're up to it. Meanwhile, move more."

Sixty minutes of physical activity every day is one of the "golden rules" for good health. That includes incidental activity (the calories we burn in our everyday activities) and planned exercise. To make a real difference, it must be regular and some of it needs to get the heart pumping. Examples of everyday activities that count include: • Walking up stairs instead of using lifts • Walking up moving escalators • Walking instead of driving for short journeys • Doing the housework at double-time • DIY and gardening Planned exercise doesn't mean a gym. The key is to find some activities you enjoy, and to do them regularly. Nerys Purchon gives some ideas in her book: • Aerobics, exercise classes, spin sessions • Dancing • Exercise bikes • Weight training is very important • Paddling, rowing, and kayaking • Swimming, surfing, and body surfing • Team sports like baseball and basketball • Tennis, squash, and other racket sports • Yoga, Pilates, tai chi And, whenever possible, stay standing instead of sitting. Even standing still will burn more calories than sitting on your butt!

About Saint-Petersburg City Tourist Information Bureau St. Petersburg City Tourist Information Bureau (CTIB) was founded in the year 2000. CTIB is a general information system, which accommodates a database about cultural life of St. Petersburg, exhibitions, festivals and theatre premiers, about sport and all other kinds of remarkable events. The database contains wide range of information about tourist objects, attractions, hotels, sanatoriums and resorts, tourist agencies and entertainment sphere. This is the most wide information data of St. Petersburg, which is constantly enlarged, and reflects the development of city tourist market. According to www.saint-petersburg.com there are a great many things for you to pick and choose from, be it a weekend break or a full holiday relaxing in the city. Experience the unparalleled romance and mystery of St. Petersburg; a city of palaces and museums, broad avenues and winding canals, St. Petersburg's short history has endowed the city with a wealth of architectural and artistic treasures. Alongside world-famous attractions such as the Hermitage, St. Isaac's Cathedral and the Mariinsky Theatre, the city has scores of lesser known but equally fascinating sights that reveal both the pomp and extravagance of St. Petersburg's political and

Imperial past, and also the mysterious, tragic genius that has touched so many of the city's great artists and writers. Still considered Russia's cultural capital, St. Petersburg reflects the country's extraordinary fate like no other city, and its uniquely rich atmosphere exerts a powerful grip on even the most jaded traveller. St. Petersburg cherishes and venerates its history and culture in an incredible number of museums, ranging from the stunning treasures of the Hermitage to the private artefacts of world-famous artists, writers and scientists. While the Winter Palace is undoubtedly the most famous, it is certainly not the only grand palace in St. Petersburg. In fact, a spate of projects in the reign of Catherine the Great ensured that the city had more than any other in Europe, and subsequent generations continued to create majestic residences in a variety of styles, many of them architectural masterpieces. It is not only palaces and churches that make up St. Petersburg's treasure trove of architectural gems, many of the city's public buildings - from administrative buildings to army barracks, and up-market stores to universities and schools - are also architectural masterpieces spanning three centuries of styles and trends. Famous for its sumptuous palaces, St. Petersburg also has a wealth of beautiful and enormously varied private homes from the pre-Revolutionary period. Some are not much less extravagant and ornate than Imperial palaces, while make up in architectural originality and character what they lack in size. The majority of St. Petersburg's residents have lived in apartments since the latter part of the 18th century, and the apartment houses of the historic centre include some of the city's most attractive and architecturally unusual buildings. From cathedrals of awe-inspiring wealth and majesty to small parish churches redolent of the spiritual devotion of private citizens, St. Petersburg's religious sights form an integral and fascinating part of the city's history and architecture. St. Petersburg's monuments celebrate the great and good of this remarkable city, as well as the remarkable events the form the rich tapestry of its history. St. Petersburg's waterways, from the majestic Neva River to the smallest canals, are an essential feature of the city's unique topography. Mostly lined with granite embankments, the rivers and canals of St. Petersburg reflect many of the city's most beautiful buildings which of course means that Bridges are an essential part of St. Petersburg's architectural make-up, unsurprisingly considering that the city is built on over 100 islands. Among the city's over 500 bridges, there are numerous architectural and technological masterpieces. Lying across the delta of the Neva River, St. Petersburg - the Venice of the North - is a city built on hundreds of islands, some of which have a unique character and history that is well worth exploring. While the centre of St. Petersburg offers vast areas of green space, including beautiful historic gardens and extensive leisure parks. And for a real twist, in somewhat the same idea as one finds in New Orleans, the cemeteries of St. Petersburg not only contain the graves of many of Russia's greatest figures of culture and history, they are also home to moving monuments and memorials commemorating some of

Torrevieja Cruising Torrevieja will welcome the MS Amadea on September 22nd

IN LESS than ten weeks Torrevieja will receive her very first cruise ship, the MS Amadea. The ship is one of the fleet from German Cruise Company Phoenix Reisen. MS Amadea, an up market ship, sailing exclusively with German passengers and will have to anchor offshore and ‘tender’ guests ashore because for the moment, at least, Torrevieja does not have a cruise ship dock. The MS Amadea is a small ship by today’s standards. At just 193 metres long and 25 mitres wide the ship offers upscale cruising for a discerning clientele. Arriving at 4.00pm on September 22nd, APYMECO, Torrevieja’s small and medium business association are aware of some of the challenges that the arrival of a cruise ship brings and are about to enter talks with cruise ships professions to put together a more defined plan of action to ensue that the visiting cruise ship guests have an excellent time ashore. Originally a top Japanese Cruise Ship, the ‘Asuka’, she was launched in 1991 and has a maximum occupancy of 600 guests and a crew of 280. Her GRT or Gross Registered Tonnage is just 29,000 grt, which by today’s standards classifies her as a boutique cruise ship. She was refitted in 2009 and joined the German Phoenix Reisen fleet, changing her name to MS Amadea. Her voyage towards Torrevieja starts in the home port of Bremerhaven, Germany on 10th September, arriving in Torrevieja on September 22nd, when she will be in port from 4.00pm to 11.00pm. After leaving Torrevieja she continues her voyage, finishing in the beautiful city of Monte Carlo, or at least beside Monaco, in the port of Villefranche (Nice) on September 27th. Torrevieja now replaces Benidorm, where the MS Amedea visited in 2014, as one of Spain 35 cruise destinations, with local councillors on both sides hoping that this first arrival will be the start of a new and profitable industry for the City of salt. While Torrevieja cannot realistically compete with the commercial harbour facilities of Alicante or Cartagena, she

does have one huge advantage, in that she is located almost half way between the two ports and can offer visiting cruise line guests shore excursion going either way to Alicante or Cartagena, within an hour’s coach trip away. Cartagena now attracts more than 100 cruise ships annually, including some of the largest in the world. Alicante attracts less than 30 but their port management have been poor over the years in trying to decide what to offer guests who visit the city, while shore management has been less than professional in their knowledge of the cruise line marketplace. Investment teams have been eying up the possibility of building a cruise ship plsu a possible Cruise Hotel dock in Torrevieja since at least 2008. Previous PP Provincial governments were not so open to the idea but new hope lies with the change in government by investment teams, who can also see the attraction of staging some major water sport events in city. Their longer-term plans revolve around the possibility of setting Torrevieja up as a Home Port, where guests would embark and disembark their voyage. The attraction to Torrevieja is that not only would the city benefit from employment but also taxes, berthing charges, being able to supply the ship with fresh food and supplies. The department of commerce is also keen to attract cruise ship guests as their typical average passenger spends $75 a day in port and the crew around $50. The average ‘spend’ from just a small ship like the MS Amadea could still benefit the town’s merchants by about $50,000, lower than normally expected due to it’s late arrival, but a nice windfall for a Tuesday afternoon. Nick Ireland from ‘At Sea TV explained: “I’m often asked ‘why would any cruise ship come to Torrevieja?’ Even the local tourism department are a little bemused because the vast majority of those employed in Tourism Offices and in Spanish Cruise Tourism have never worked on a cruise ship or for a major cruise line and thus they have only a limited knowledge

of what the cruise market is all about.” A strong supporter of Torrevieja adding the cruise mix to the tourism offering he added: “Torrevieja is somewhat unique because it’s in the middle of many things: For shore excursions, within an hour or so bus trip you have; Alicante, Benidorm, Valor Chocolate and Turron Factories, Cartagena , the 43 Liquor factory, Jumilia wine area, Murcia and Orihuela, Elche shoe factories, dozens of museums, plus international airports in Murcia and Alicante.” Guests from the MS Amadea will not have a long time in port, but many local establishments are already looking at special ways they can attract them and make Torrevieja a special experience on this voyage. At the moment Torrevieja does not have any shore excursions designed specifically for Cruise ship passengers. However the city has lots of opportunities to develop them through the Natural lakes and parks; Mud and Salt Spas and Treatments; Museums; Theatres; International Auditorium; Submarine S61 and lots of shopping, cafes, bars plus beaches, golf, and other nautical experiences. Thoughts are already turning towards 2016 and what the city can offer potential cruise ship guests as Phoenix Reisen are bringing a larger ship to Torrevieja, the MS Albatros on Saturday, October 8th, 2016. The beautiful MS Albatros was built in 1973 by Wärtsilä Helsinki New Shipyard, Finland for Royal Viking Line as Royal Viking Sea, and has also sailed under the names Royal Odyssey, Norwegian Star, and Crown. Some local residents from around the region used to work on the ship and have already expressed their interest on the possibility of going aboard for a quick, nostalgic visit. But first, local merchants, traders, APYMECO and the Town Hall’s departments of Tourism and Commerce need to get their heads together for a new plan of action for their first Cruise Ship arrival, which former cruise ship professionals all hope will be much more than a welcoming band or flamenco dancers on the dockside.

By Jenny Dodd OF ALL the European countries, Spain is the one that suffers most from forest fires. There are various reasons for this. A study made by the University of Alcalรก (Madrid) indicated that between 1968 and 2010 the abandonment of agricultural land and the higher temperatures that now occur have contributed to this. Frequent and ever increasing drought also contributes to the problem. Global warming is now playing a part in this phenomenon. The change in crops has also had an effect. Traditional crops and traditional land use were more effective at controlling the situation but now large scale farming has changed the pattern of cropping. In addition due to the financial crisis the budget for fire fighting has been reduced. Every day, day after day from June onwards the news

Dangers of forest fires programmes show huge areas on fire and the fire fighters struggling to extinguish the flames. Due to difficult terrain in the mountains this is often a very arduous and dangerous task and on occasions members of the fire fighters have been killed when the wind has swung round and trapped them. If they can approach in vehicles and on foot they do so, and water carrying helicopters work continually to try to contain and kill the flames. The devastation of the many National and Natural Parks is dreadful to see on the news. When the fires are finally extinguished the land is blackened and shrivelled and sometimes the bones of animals which have perished can be seen, when they could not escape.

Occasionally houses too are destroyed, leaving the occupants without a roof and having lost all of their possessions. Many householders are evacuated every year, when fire approaches their property, and are cared for in schools or sports halls. The damage to the environment and the animal life is incalculable, since it takes years for new forest areas to generate. The biggest danger to areas at risk is human begins. Lack of thought and carelessness creates many problems. One of the common causes is cigarette ends carelessly tossed away, out of cars, when they can be blown into the bushes. Barbeques in the countryside in picnic areas are usually prohibited from June

onwards, as are campfires in the forests. Any infringement of the rules now incurs hefty fines, and occasionally a prison sentence, if a fire has been started due to this. One fire was started by tourists letting go Chinese lanterns to float into the air. Once some tourists lit up a barbeque in the forest without due thought, unaware of the danger. As well as this, there are arsonists who get a thrill out of seeing forests burn and often set fires in several places one after another to cause the maximum inconvenience to the fire fighters. It is now prohibited to burn agricultural waste. TV news programmes have already started to talk about the risks this year and to discuss the ways in which they could be prevented to some

extent. In one area four buffalos have been given the task of eating all the loose vegetation; some places use sheep to keep down the growth. Fire breaks too are being made in forests so that the fires cannot jump into the next area of forest. Following the dry winter we have had and the hotter than usual spring, the risk of fire this year is very real. The MOD has 3,000 staff on hand and air force and army helicopters ready to go into action at any time. In some places property owners have been requested to keep their land clear of debris and old vegetation. The best we can all do on a personal level is to try to consider any action that would trigger off any incident all too easily. Before you go to light up, or toss that cigarette end, that still may be smouldering, to the ground, think twice about what the consequences might be.

23 years of Habaneras on the Beach ALMOST 3,000 people found a spot on Playa del Cura on Friday night for the 23rd Habaneras on the Beach. Those in the know arrived early, set up their deck chairs, brought out the coolers, spread their picnics and settled back to enjoy the show. The dynamic and entertaining evening lasted more than two hours and was introduced by actor and stand-up comedian Antonio Ballester.

La Coral Bella Torrevieja, ‘Nuevo Amanecer de Torrelamata’, ‘Cecilio Gallego -Amas de Casa’, the ‘Coro Juvenil Francisco Vallejos’, the vocal group ‘Cantus Colorus’, ‘Coral Torrevejense José Hódar’, ‘Manuel Barberá’ the choir ‘Brea y Sal’ took the responsibility for putting together the soundtrack of the fabric of the city, with its most popular musical genre. The Choirs, all formed by members of different ages and nationalities, provided a faithful reflection of the population that calls Torrevieja home, where multiculturalism is a characteristic feature of the city that is also reflected in the culture and in ‘Habanera’, its most genuine of traditions. The evening concluded in tradition fashion with the rendering by the massed, mixed choir, featuring members of all eight groups, performing ‘La bella Lola’ and ‘Golondrina de amor’ (Swallow Love). The evening’s ‘regulars’ waved their white handkerchiefs to accompany Bella Lola, in a performance that motivated the

participation of a large number of spectators who in turn waved lighters and mobile phones in the air. The entire audience was then encouraged to take to their feet and sing along with the members of the various choirs with the habanera ‘Golondrina de amor’. The singing of Habaneras in an open space by the sea, is a popular tradition that began in 1993, and encourages this kind of music and choral singing as part of the cultural identity of the city. This activity, sponsored by the Municipal Habaneras, is the prologue of the International Habaneras and Polyphony of Torrevieja, to be held this weekend, from the 19th to 25th July at the iconic Eras de la Sal. This takes place in the port and has prizes for the first three people to manage to get along the pole. A long thick wooden pole of about 4 meters in length is installed in vertical position over the sea. At the end of the pole there is a red flag and all that participants have to do, is to reach the end of the pole and grab the flag. On Thursday evening at 7.30pm there is

Emiliano Casal’s Velero Emiliano (white shirt), with wife Stine and staff at Velero

CoastRider CoastRider - Edition - Edition 555 - July 470 14th - March 2015 5thwww.coastridersl.com 2013 EMILIANO CASAL, is not only Spain’s three time undefeated lightweight boxing champion, but a man of many hats to go along with his belts. Along with preparing himself for an up and coming title bout for the European Lightweight Belt possibly followed by a shot at the world title, the popular Argentinean who now calls Torrevieja home is a true man of the people. In regards to the European Belt, Emiliano said; “We are presently in negotiation over where and when we shall fight for the European belt. Possibly Belgium or Torrevieja. It will take me about three months to reach my Lightweight weight and be in fighting shape. And while I’m losing weight, my wife is putting it on, as she is expecting our second child.” Emiliano not only speaks perfect Spanish, but fluent English and Norwegian, in part thanks to his wife and daughter both being Norwegian. He owns although does not drive a couple of local taxis and his latest venture is a delightful beach restaurant just 100 metres

from the Salt Pie in Torrevieja. He’s also found something else besides boxing that he’s very good at: acting; having major roles in two local film productions, Scotfilms ‘Trained to Kill’ and Siesta Productions ‘The Cucaracha Club’ while looking forward to appearing in his third film this autumn, ‘Realm of Darkness, with Bill Little directing. Valero is his new family restaurant that he opened just over a month ago on the beach at Playa del Acequion. Offering a fresh and contemporary design, Velero is something special for Torrevieja. “My wife and I wanted to offer something just a little different for Torrevieja. Our new restaurant is open from 10.00am until ‘whenever’, and we serve up very special dishes not found elsewhere in the city. A very special taste of the Mediterranean.” These hot summer nights Velero was packed with visitors, especially to their ‘chill out’ zone. Emiliano is there in person to greet guests every night of week and believes in the hands on approach. Stop by and say ‘hi’. You won’t regret it.

Korean-style barbecue chicken and sweetcorn INGREDIENTS • 4 free-range chicken thighs, bonein, skin-on • 2 corn-on-the-cobs, cut in half • Vegetable oil to brush For the doenjang mayo • 1 tbsp doenjang • 90g mayonnaise For the marinade • 300ml soy sauce

• 3 tbsp rice vinegar • 3 tbsp honey • 100g dark brown sugar • 2 tbsp gochujang • 2 tbsp freshly grated ginger • 4 large spring onions, finely chopped • 6 garlic cloves, grated • 2 tbsp toasted sesame oil

METHOD 1. To make the mayo, mix the doenjang with the mayonnaise, then cover and chill in the fridge. 2. For the marinade, whisk all the ingredients together in a bowl. Set aside 250ml for a glaze. 3. Put the chicken thighs in a medium bowl and pour in the rest of the marinade, making sure the thighs are covered (you can use some of the reserved marinade if you need it). Cover and chill for at least 4 hours or overnight to let the flavours infuse. Bring up to room temperature for 30 minutes before cooking. 4. Put a heavy-based saucepan over a low-medium heat and tip in the reserved marinade. Simmer for 8-10 minutes until reduced and thickened enough for a glaze. 5 Heat the oven to

200°C/fan180°C/gas 6. Light the barbecue. Shake off excess marinade from the chicken, put in a roasting tin, then roast for 20 minutes. Put on the barbecue and cook for 10-12 minutes, turning once and brushing with the glaze, until sticky and cooked. Keep warm. 6. Brush the corn with a little oil and barbecue, turning often, for about 10 minutes until the kernels are bright yellow and juicy. Brush the chicken lightly with more of the glaze, then serve with the corn and doenjang mayo for dipping.

Honda sets new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ HONDA HAS set a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for ‘Lowest fuel consumption – all 24 contiguous EU countries (all cars)’, recording an average 100.31 miles per gallon over 8,387 miles, in a 25 day drive across all 24 EU contiguous countries. Behind the wheel of a Honda Civic Tourer 1.6 i-DTEC for the entire journey were two members of Honda’s European Research and Development (R&D) team, Fergal McGrath and Julian Warren, who took on the challenge to further demonstrate the impressive realworld fuel economy of the Tourer. The remarkable distance travelled is similar to the team driving to Australia from their home in the UK, stopping just nine times to refuel. The car achieved an incredible average 932 miles on each tank of fuel, at a total fuel cost for the whole journey of just £459*. The team set out on their epic road trip from Aalst, Belgium, on Monday June 1st, navigating the continent in a clockwise direction. They returned to their start point on Thursday June 25th, recording the incredible fuel economy figures which exceed the Tourer’s quoted efficiency of 74.3mpg by more than 25%.

The official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title is ‘Lowest Fuel Consumption – all 24 contiguous EU countries’, measured in litres per 100km and miles per gallon calculated over the entire journey. Under the rules the same two drivers must be in the car

for the whole journey, driving an average of approximately 380 miles, taking around 7.5 hours, each day. Based on strict and rigorous guidelines, the car had to enter each of the 24 countries specified, collecting a range of evidence including a fuel/mileage logbook, GPS readings, video and photographs and independent witness signatures to prove that it has done so. To ensure accurate monitoring of the route, journey time and distance driven, the record car was fitted with a tracking device, provided by fleet telematics and stolen vehicle recovery expert, TRACKER (part of the Tantalum Corporation). Leon Brannan, Head of Cars for Honda (UK) comments: "This is an incredible achievement and the team should all be very proud of the efforts that they have put in to set this new GUINNESS WORLD RECORD. Driving the equivalent distance from their home in the UK to Australia in just 25 days is a huge challenge very few would take on. The fuel economy figures are remarkable – particularly when you consider that this is not a small car, but an estate with class-leading load space and vast practicality.”

LAST YEAR was a turning point for the automobile industry in Europe. With a total of 12.6 million passenger cars registered, it marked the first positive annual result since the financial crisis began in 2007. This growth has been maintained throughout the first half of 2015. The ACEA, who represent; BMW Group, DAF Trucks, Daimler, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Ford of Europe, Hyundai Motor Europe, Iveco, Jaguar Land Rover, Opel Group, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Renault Group, Toyota Motor Europe, Volkswagen Group, Volvo Cars, Volvo Group has revised its forecast for car registrations for the full year to 5%, considering that over the first five months of 2015 the year-on-year growth was 6.8%¹. In terms of units, this would mean surpassing the 13 million

cars mark this year. This is still well below the 2007 peak of almost 16 million cars. “Despite this positive forecast, we cannot afford to become complacent,” stated ACEA Secretary General, Erik Jonnaert. “Europe still faces challenging times. Today EU car sales are behind those of China and of the United States, where sales levels have now recovered to pre-crisis levels. This is why it is now more important than ever to ensure that the competitiveness of our industry; one of Europe’s most vital strategic sectors, remains high on the European and national policy agendas.” Jonnaert added; “ACEA’s call to European policy makers is to create an environment which fosters innovation and international trade; the two main drivers for our industry’s

competitiveness on a global scale.” Facts about the EU automobile industry Some 12.1 million people - or 5.6% of the EU employed population - work in the sector. The 3.1 million jobs in automotive manufacturing represent 10.4% of EU's manufacturing employment. Motor vehicles account for 396€ billion in tax contributions. The automobile and parts sector is also a key driver of knowledge and innovation, representing Europe's largest private contributor to R&D, with €41.5 billion invested annually. The automobile sector contributes significantly to the EU trade balance with a €95.1 billion surplus.

European sales forecast at 5%

Jaguar prototype at Tour de France

JAGUAR’S FIRST performance crossover is due to be revealed later in the year and is in its final stages of development. Part of final testing included sending a prototype to Team Sky rider Chris Froome's La Pierre-SaintMartin training camp as a real-world test of the Jaguar crossover’s performance, durability and clever packaging. The team then chose the same car to support them during stage one of the Tour de France; their most demanding and high profile event. The job of the support vehicle is to carry a crew of up to four people including the Team Sky Sports Director, doctor, mechanic and another senior team member. The wide, spacious cabin of the F-PACE accommodates the crew in complete comfort while the boot space is the largest in class to help carry the team’s equipment including drinks, energy gels,

clothing, tools and spares for the bike. The F-PACE Prototype will support Chris Froome on the first of 21 stages, the individual time trial, which started at Utrecht in the heart of the Netherlands on Saturday, 4 July. The time trial heads south towards Belgium over a twisting route of 13.7km; the riders setting a blistering pace and pushing themselves to the limits of endurance even at this early stage of the competition. Froome added: “The tour is everything to me. There’s something special about it. The hype, the passion, the crowds. Everything is completely overwhelming. I can’t wait to get on the road now and get into the race. I’m back with a vengeance this year.” The Team Sky F-PACE Prototype will also sport a cutting edge bike racking solution, developed by Jaguar Land

Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations. The rack has a unique telescopic clamp, designed specifically to optimise the quick-release of Team Sky’s Pinarello Bolide Time Trial bikes. To mark the reveal of the Team Sky F-PACE and because the car is under wraps until its global reveal later in the year, Jaguar has produced a special camouflage. The soft wrap reflects the performance and design of both the FPACE and Team Sky and has been inspired by the Tour de France and road racing bikes. It depicts unique carbon textures, rubber and chains interspersed with the iconic Team Sky design to create a stunning, rich, layered effect which will keep the exact design details of the F-PACE secret until the world premiere of the Jaguar F-PACE at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, 2015.

Crowdfunding in Torrevieja THE NOT so new, but certainly becoming more common buzzwords in investment circles, are Kickstarter and Crowdfunding. From wild and just crazy ideas, to board games, films, cars, electric bikes and motorbikes, watches, mobile applications, toys, home design, adult entertainment to wherever your imagination takes you; somewhere, someone, has a new idea that they need money for. Since the dawn of the motion picture and back into the early days of theatre, inventors, film makers, theatre producers et all, would seek Angles, investors, joint venture capital or pure bank credit, to try and get their ideas off the ground and into the public eye. According to Jordan Sale at Fundraise.com: “Simply put, crowdfunding is a method for financing projects by raising money from a large group of individuals, i.e. the crowd Although crowdfunding has recently gained main street popularity, it actually has a long history in America and can be traced as far back as the 1700ʼs. In fact, the construction of the Statue of Liberty was partially crowdfunded by thousands of small donations from around the world, a campaign organized by Joseph Pulitzer using his newspaper, The New York World.” Sale continued; “Kickstarter and Indiego are popular examples of donation-based crowdfunding platforms, where participants give money to further a project, with very few strings attached. Though equity is not distributed and donors don’t receive financial benefits directly from the success of a project, there are often rewards or perks given out. Actor Zach Braff famously offered a filmmaking symposium to anyone who donated $2,500 to his campaign to raise funding for the production of an independent film. Rewards-based crowdfunding has become so popular that companies have emerged dedicated entirely to the fulfilment of rewards that have been promised.” There have been some very high profile examples of the success of Crowdfunding. British rock band Marillion funded a US tour by raising nearly $60,000 via online donations from fans. In part this led to the creation of ArtistShare in 2000, the first platform entirely dedicated to crowdfunding. That evolved into Kiva, one of the most successful micro-lending platforms, who have raised over $165 million through crowdfunding, with a 98.83% repayment rate. Entrepreneur Michael Sullivan came up with the name “crowdfunding” in 2006. Three years later, Kickstarter made its name as a place for entrepreneurs to raise funds for companies and campaigns. According to Sale, “Kickstarter reports that $1,261,961,419 has been pledged on its site and more than 67,000 projects have been successfully funded, as of August 2014.” Other new kids on the block jumped on the bandwagon starting in 2010 including GrowVC, aimed at connecting startups and investors: Fundrise, whose Co-Founders Ben and Dan Miller had the goal of giving everyone the opportunity to

Cicaracha

invest in and benefit from real estate development. Our first look at Crowdfunding is a 'focus on film', provide you with a peak at the new wave of independent film and video producers who are producing low budget films funded almost entirely through Crowdfunding methods. It's an exciting age for 'indie' producers and to mark this growing market, The Coastrider is also involved with a new film festival that is also in the planning stage, which itself will be looking for crowdfunding. While the majority of crowdfunded films are documentaries, as these are primarily produced by a small team, there are a few groups with a full blown cast of actors, begging or borrowing cars, boats, plans, drones, equipment, locations and everything in between to produce their films. Over the last year, three crowdfunded films have been filming on the Costa Blanca. Back in October 2014 Torrevieja experienced two crowdfunding firsts. On the one hand the first English Language International film to use crowdfunding, The Cucaracha Club started filming in the harbour while on Sunday of the same week, Spain’s first film to be crowdfunded had its premiere in the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre. Even more spooky was the fact that both movies share a passing resemblance to each other but there the coincidence ends. Spain’s first ever Crowdfunded film was 'Operasiones Espesiales', an action, adventure, comedy film Directed by Paco Soto and follows the adventures of two local police officers who rescue the Lady of Elche, or at least try to. After receiving strong reviews and much encouragement from a ‘short’ film he produced and directed, the Elche Director Soto, decided the time was right to delve in the world of feature filmmaking. Paco Soto said; “We decided on a course of crowdfunding, since it was impossible to get funding for a feature film by the usual means.” He began filming during the summer of 2013 with filming taking the cast and crew through local towns like Elche, Alicante, Madrid, Torrevieja, Santa Pola, Benitachell, Sax, Villena and Jacarilla. The story follows the adventures of Pepe Cic aracha 'The Official', who is being retired so he starts looking to recruit a team of Special Operations Officers for a difficult mission. The Policia Local officers put together a unique group of ex-convicts and people with unique skills and go in search of the ‘Lady of Elche’, the mythical archaeological piece that has been stolen while being moved from Madrid to Elche. Visit their website at www.Operasionesespesiales.com. Spain’s first English Language feature film is a spy caper from Siesta Productions. ‘The Cucaracha Club’ is a lighthearted, spy flavoured, action thriller that is trying to shake up the cinematic world on a number of fronts. The film wrapped up shooting in June 2015 and features many locations around the city of Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa and the Southern Costa Blanca. Along with being a feature film, Scriotwriter, producer and associate director Billie Anthiony Gaddess noted that; “We were committed to not only finishing the film, but to getting the name of Torrevieja and region out to a much larger audience, promoting local beauty spots and tourist merits all

Trained To Kill

around the globe.” With the film in the can and being edited together, Siesta Film Productions plan to enter the film in a number of prestigious film festivals, looking for a distributor and spreading the word about the region. The film may also be promoted at the dozen or more Tourism Fairs where the Costa Blanca promotes the region throughout the year The Cucaracha Club was partly funded by giving local businesses, bars, cafes, hotels, etc…. the opportunity to promote themselves on a much larger stage, to a worldwide audience, offering them instant credibility and the knowledge that the ‘Cucaracha Club’ marketing machine will also be promoting local business at each festival they visit, along with them having a mention in the credits and the opportunity to have a bit part in the film. Look closely and you’ll see the unmistakeable figure of former Eastenders star Tom Watt, who plays one of the film’s major characters and along with local actor Billie Anthony' Gaddess, who are the driving force behind gaining media attention in Hollywood and on British TV talk shows and media. More details about ‘The Cucaracha Club’ can be found at: http://siestafilmproductions.com. It would be remiss not to mention that the film also has an excellent score and theme song of the same name, performed by singer-actress Chloe Leigh which is available on iTunes for download. ‘Crowd Funding’ and to a point ‘Kick Starting’ are not new ideas to hit the film industry, having been around for a couple of decades, but when it comes to low budget features they have become the norm. For more than 75 years, companies have been using product placement, and before it was outlawed, subliminal marketing, to promote their products to the cinema and home audience, whether you realised it or not. Step back 50 years plus to another spy caper, to 1964 and a certain Mr James Bond, 007 in ‘Goldfinger’, and one major promotional item comes to mind: the Aston Martin DB5. Later Omega wristwatches would become a trademark associated with 007 and more recently BMW although for the next 007 romp, ten special edition Aston Martin’s have been specially commission just for the film ‘Spectre’, due out in November 2015. Scotfilms have also relocated to the sunny Costa Blanca. Part owned by former World Kick boxing Champion Bill Little and his partner Hazel, Bill loved the area so much that he rewrote part of the script for his third feature film; ‘Trained to Kill’ and wrapped up all the shooting Spain around Easter. The film is being produced through ‘Scotfilms Ltd’ and is about a former Special Air Service (SAS) soldier who has to fight against injustice in order to save his family and help a friend bring the criminals to justice while evading the police. The film stars Chris Capaldi (cousin of Dr. Who’s, Peter Capaldi), Bill Little, Rach Leonard, Tony Quirke, Heather Haddow, Kevin Edgar, Cameron Findlay, Michael McNulty, Stobo M Fonzerelli Murdoch, Andy Kowalczyk, John Leese, Pamela Cuthbertson with local personalities including Spanish Boxing Champion Emiliano Casal, entertainer Tony Capaldi and the world’s favourite OXO Dad, Michael Redfern. More information about the film and Bill can be found on both Facebook and IMDB.com by searching for ‘Trained to Kill’ or ‘Bill Little’.

Miguel Bosé "love" in Alicante

Photo credits www.miguelangelvillar.com ON SUNDAY NIGHT at the Plaza de Toros de Alicante, thousands of fans vibrated with the songs of Miguel Bosé. The artist offered a great show of light and sound in which he presented songs of his latest production 'love' with such classic hits as Morena Mia and Nena. The concert lasted over two hours on a big stage with Miguel showing his own ‘love’ for his followers by encouraging everyone to sing along with him as he sang his most famous songs.

Miguel Bose appeared on stage in pure white, and setting a high standard from the word go. The Alicante audience once again witnessed the unique talent of one of the greatest artists on thenational scene. Miguel Bose new tour will mark one of the most important events of his career. The LOVE TOUR, is a show in which he was joined by eight musicians and a stage design and light display designed specially for the show. He performed without stopping and showed no

regard for his age but tremendous vitality for a singer at 60, who sang songs from "LOVE" in addition to the best of his repertoire. The LOVE TOUR was an innovative show with a stunning set design, latest technology in lighting, sound, video and all ingredients of the Miguel Bosé, which we are accustomed with his show that is specially designed for larger venues in Spain and America.

Roger Hodgson brings Supertramp to Murcia FORMER LEAD vocalist with Supertramp, Roger Hodgson wooed the audience in Murcia’s Bullring on Wednesday night. The vocalist, arranger and composer of many of the bestknown successes of the band Supertramp opened up his soul on the night to the audience and even encouraged one of his musicians, the saxophonist Aaron Macdonald, to address in the language of Cervantes to several thousand enthusiastic fans. Fabs were on their feet almost immediately when the first riff from ‘Breakfast in America’ confirmed even further that Hodgson is one of the creative geniuses of catchy melodies, as the entire audience seemed to be singing along with him on the The Logical Song. The evening was split between his Supertramp days and his solo career that has produced three albums. And unlike a recent occasion when he played with just the basics in Alicante, now he has the backing of a full band, with bassist, drummer, keyboardist and, above all, the sax of Macdonald as mentioned before, so good is he that it would be tough for anyone to think it was not the very same John Helliwell from Supertramp. Starting with "Take the long way home" and his unforgettable harmonica, the evening included gems like " School "," Babaji , "" Two of us "or" Lord it's mine ". Reserved for the encore was his extended and retrospective version of his "Fool's overture” with the public all on their feet and forgetting their chairs in the sand of the arena, to turn the evening into a "beach party" to which Hodgson had previously invited them. After that peak, the encore ended with two anthems " Give a little bit "and “It's raining again”.

In short, Roger Hodgson will always be that friend that many would like to have an evening with around the bonfire on the beach with their beloved, singing along through their

catalogue of timeless songs and all he needs is a little encouragement plus a guitar or electric piano in his hands to do so.

THE LEGENDARY guitarist of Jethro Tull Martin Barre and his band delighted a full house at San Javier Jazz on Saturday night. In their heyday Tull sold over 60 million copies of their 30 albums. Martin Barre and Band are touring to revive the spirit of progressive rock. With a changed and more personal sound, they played an extensive collection of gems from the catalogue of Jethro Tull, plus some of the best tracks from Barre’s solo career. It was an essential concert for lovers of Guitar Rock. They are not a 'tribute band' by any means, but apart from the haunting voice of Ian Anderson, it’s as close as you get to the original sound through the stage presence of the original guitarist. There are guitarists who have always been there, behind the name of a band or overshadowed by the figure of a charismatic leader, but without them nothing would have been the same. Martin Lancelot Barre, born in Kings Health, Birmingham (England, 1946) joined the band as guitarist for Jethro Tull in 1969. His family’s passion for jazz allowed him to listen to guitarists like Wes Montgomery and Barney Kessel in his childhood. At fourteen, he learned to play guitar at 16 the flute and at 20 the saxophone. Martin Barre started his career in the early sixties playing the saxophone in a local band called The Dwellers; then they changed their name to The Moonrakers. In 1966 he moved to London with his partner and friend Chris Rodgers to join Screaming Lord Sutch, one of its members was Ritchie Blackmore. They joined The Noblemen, opening for The Beau Brummell's Americans on tour in England. Soon after, the band changed its name to The Motivation. The group consisted of Jimmy Marsh (vocals), Bryan Stevens (bass), Mike Ketley (keyboards), Malcolm Tomlinson (drums) plus Barre and Rodgers. His style was influenced by blues and R & B fashion styles in those years. They were opening for bands like The Coasters and The Drifters. After passing some more groups, Barre decided he needed a change of scenery, and met with the guys from Jethro Tull. In 1968, after recording their

first album Jethro Tull (This Was), internal rifts appeared in the group. Guitarist Mick Abrahams had a blues style that provoked confrontations with the group leader Ian Anderson; They disagreed on the way forward. The post became vacant for a guitarist. In his first audition for Jethro Tull, Barre hardly touched the guitar, but Ian Anderson gave him a second chance, and since then he has been part of the group. For forty years his career has been linked to Jethro Tull; This has allowed for Stability within the world of music, but it also was the cause of him being considered one of the best guitarists in spite of classical themes in the history of rock. His sound is unmistakable, versatile, delicate, energetic, and whatever it needs to be to suit. In 1990 he began his solo career, coinciding with the decline in popularity of Jethro Tull. He recorded A Summer Band (1992), A Trick of Memory (1994), The Meeting (1996), and a few years later, Stage Left (2003). The first three albums have a fusion style, allowing Barre to express everything he wanted in search of new horizons. Stage left is blues and folk influences; Maybe becomes a little to his roots. A piece like Aqualung was voted by the readers of Guitar Player magazine as the best of the time, and Barre was listed among the top 100 guitarists of all time by Guitar World magazine. In 1988, his playing on the album Crest of a Knave earned him a Grammy Award. Hunting Girl, Locomotive Breath or Minstrel in The Gallery will not be considered without the greatest rock guitar Martin Barre, who has also put his guitar in the service of Maddy Prior, Paul McCartney, Phil Collins, Gary Moore, Joe Bonamassa, Pentangle, etc. . In September Martin Barre will release his fourth solo album, Away With Words, which includes new songs and new versions of songs by Jethro Tull. While it’s true his solo career has not been as prolific and interesting as might be expected, the audience reaction to his playing would certify that he remains one of the very best guitarists of all time.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. returns to the Big Screen ONE OR two expatiates will no doubt remember the 1960’s hit TV series The Man From UNCLE. Staring Robert Vaughn, David McCallum and Leo G. Carroll. It was an entertaining spy romp, with James Bond undertones and lots of tongue in cheek moments, such as the U.N.C.L.E. headquarters in New York City, which was most frequently entered by a secret entrance in Del Floria's Tailor Shop, which again was spoofed by the opening sequence of ‘Get Smart’. The 2015 version opens August 14th and is directed by Guy Ritchie, with Armie Hammer, Henry Cavill, and Hugh Grant staring as Illya Kuryakin, Napolion Solo and Mr. Waverly, respectively. Running a tad under two hours at 116 minutes ‘The Man from U.N.C.L.E.’ is based on the 1964 MGM television series of the same name, created by Sam Rolfe. Set against the backdrop of the early 1960s period of the Cold War, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. centres on U.N.C.L.E. agents Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin. The two team up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organization, which is bent on destabilizing the fragile balance of power through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology. The duo’s only lead is the daughter of a vanished German scientist, who is the key to infiltrating the criminal organization, and they must race against time to find her and prevent a worldwide catastrophe. British actor Henry Cavill takes on the lead role of Napoleon Solo. Most recently he shot to international fame playing Superman in the 2013 film ‘Man of Steel’, the highest-grossing Superman film of all time, a role that he will be reprising in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, while he’s also a strong contender to takes over the role of 007 from Daniel Craig. Armie" Hammer is best known for his portrayal of the Winklevoss twins in the 2010 film The Social Network, Clyde Tolson in J. Edgar (2011), Prince Andrew Alcott in Mirror Mirror (2012) and the lead character in the 2013 feature film The Lone Ranger. Meanwhile, Hugh Grant keeps everyone in check as head of the department, Alexander Waverley. And for those trivia buffs out there, U.N.C.L.E. is an acronym for the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement. And now you know.

Mission Impossible back again TOM CRUISE is back in one of his favourite roles as Ethan Hunt in Mission Impossible: Secret Nation. With the IMF dissolved and Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) cast out to his own fate, the team has to take on the Union; a network of highly trained special agents. These thoroughly trained groups are determined to create a new world order through a series of increasingly serious terrorist attacks. Ethan gathers his team and joins forces with the renegade British agent Faust Ilsa (Rebecca Ferguson), who may or may not a member of this secret nation, as the group is facing its most impossible mission to date. The film opens August 7th and stars Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames, Sean Harris and Alec Baldwin.

105 million years ago, flies were doing the pollinating BARCELONA, Spain -The Cretaceous Period featured neither bees nor butterflies. So were ancient plants pollinated It turns out flies did all the work. In a new study, published in the journal Current Biology, researchers from the University of Barcelona detail a number of amber fossils, each revealing fly specimens that fed on nectar and pollinized gymnosperm plants around 105 million years ago. The new research highlights the important role two species of flies played in the ancient forests of the Iberian Peninsula, which was an island during the Cretaceous Period. The two

species belonged to the family Zhangsolvidae. Today, flowering plants (angiosperms) attract the attention of nature's most prolific pollinators -- bees and butterflies, and to a lesser extent, beetles and flies. But the giant forests of ancient Iberia were dominated not by flowers and their nectar, but by gymnosperms -- pines, firs and cycads. These tall trees relied mostly on wind for pollination. But flies helped, using a long proboscis to slurp sap midflight in a strategy similar to a hummingbird's feeding methods. The newly detailed amber fossils reveal flies with neatly preserved

proboscises, as well as a pollen grains from an ancient Bennettitalean species, an extinct order of gymnosperms. The discovery holds promise for scientists hoping to shed light on the transition from a gymnospermdominated ecosystem to one filled with angiosperms. Such efforts have proven difficult without evidence of ancient pollinating insects. "If insects were able to feed on gymnosperms flower structures, it is probably true that the transition to angiosperms took place then," the authors of the new study wrote, optimistically.Brooks Hays

I will keep shouting “Hala Madrid!”

IKER CASILIAS said goodbye to the media and all the fans of Real Madrid on Saturday after announcing his move to Porto. In the press room at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, the iconic goalkeeper, sat alone, did not stay for questions and read this statement "First of all, good morning everyone, thank you for coming and joining me on this special moment. Today I have come to this stage, to this great stadium to say goodbye to all of you and especially Real Madrid. I will not say goodbye because this is a point to be followed on. We'll see. As you know, yesterday, I stopped belonging to Real Madrid and I am now a part of Porto. I want to tell you that the decision to go to Porto is due to two main reasons. First, the hope they have given to me by the president, the director Antero and coach Julen. We have known each other for some time and, above all, to the team. And second, by the affection that I have been getting from the people who knew my destination was Portugal. And in that sense, I feel I have won and I am very happy and very pleased. I will do my best not to disappoint them and fight their best to get the largest possible number of titles on my new team. Therefore, thank you very much, Porto, for trusting me. And now, I want to address all Madridistas. After 25 years defending the shield of the world's largest club, comes a difficult day; this day, in my sporting life. I say goodbye to this institution where obviously it has given me everything. It seems like yesterday when at nine years old it was the first time I wore the shirt of Real Madrid and I saw my dream fulfilled. During this time, all this time, we have suffered, we laughed, we cried, we have enjoyed together. I felt accompanied and well-liked; in good times and in bad times. Above all, please remember me not just as a great keeper or a bad goalie, I just

hope you remember me for being a good person. This club has not only taught me to be a sportsman, but has shaped me as a person, has helped me grow, provided me with the values upheld by our Club Badge: respect, friendship, commitment and, above all, humility. I have always tried to reflect them wherever I went representing Real Madrid. Today I also want to remember all those very special colleagues with whom I have been part of every season I've been here. Throughout these years we have lived through unique and unrepeatable moments. Co-workers who have formed a family and the sharing of tears, of both joy and sadness. I leave great friends and I know that wherever I am I can always count on them. I want to remember all my coaches I have had since I started playing with Real Madrid. Thank you Mosque, God rest his soul, who was the person who asked me to join Real Madrid in the youngest category, until my last coach Carlo Ancelotti. I remember all of them, because I've learned many things. The technical coaches, which for me have also been a fundamental part in the development and my career by becoming part of Real Madrid and

being a football player. Because they all have given me advice, they provided me with compassion during bad times. We experienced much joy together, apart from a lot of experience and professionalism. All in all; I learned a lot. I remember all my coaches, from whom I've learned many things. Of course, all the staff, who remain unseen but that every day we have been part of Real Madrid and I have always been supported by them to solve any problems. They are not seen but are always there. All my love to my parents and all my family, whose sacrifice and efforts helped me to take this path; it was difficult but very nice. And above all, my wife and my son, because every day they will be sharing with me, every second of this exciting phase of my life. And these last lines I dedicate especially to all of you: to Real Madrid, which knows no borders. Thank you for your unconditional support, since I arrived at 18, for allowing me to lift each cup, each win, to be your captain for five years. For accompanying me in good times and in bad times. There is a phrase I've always said in an interview and I repeat so that people will stick with it: above all it reminds me to be a good goalkeeper or a bad goalie, I just hope people remember me as being good person. Therefore, thanks; a thousand thanks. I will never forget and be assured that wherever you go to keep shouting “Hala Madrid!” ". I will not say goodbye because we shall meet again here soon.” said Iker Casillas.

Hunt for 18 of Britain’s ‘Most Wanted’ goes to fugitives’ back yards THIS WEEK it’s been hard to miss the four metre high TV Screen travelling along the coast, highlighting the UK’s most wanted, who just might be your neighbour. The 13 ft high digital screen broadcasting the faces of 18 of Britain’s Most Wanted fugitives is on tour around British ex-pat hot spots in Spain. It’s the latest push by crime-fighting charity Crimestoppers and the National Crime Agency (NCA) to track down the 18 remaining individuals wanted as part of Operation Captura. The fugitives are wanted by UK law enforcement agencies in connection with crimes including murder, rape, indecent assault of a child and drug trafficking. And they are believed to be hiding among British communities in popular ex-pat areas – including Benidorm, Malaga and Puerto Banus. The digital screen, attached to the back of a van, is touring all these areas and parking outside nightclubs, bars, British supermarkets and restaurants. It is hoped that going direct to the fugitives’ back yards and putting their faces in plain sight will help to flush them out. Lord Ashcroft KCMG PC, the Founder and Chair of Crimestoppers, said: “Operation Captura has proved a huge success since it was launched in 2006 and the majority of individuals on our most wanted list have been captured. However, there are still a number of criminals who are evading arrest. We must ensure these individuals are brought to justice.” Steve Reynolds, NCA Deputy Director, added: “We’ve caught 68 out of 86 fugitives on the Captura list and the rest know we won’t stop until we catch them too. By taking our campaign directly into Spanish communities where we believe they are living and socialising, their lives will become even more uncomfortable. We want British expats and locals to help us by being extra eyes and ears and telling us what they know. These fugitives are wanted for serious crimes. Anyone who is helping them stay on the run, such as girlfriends, wives, family members back home, or criminal associates, should know that assisting them is an offence too. He continued; “There may also be people in the UK with vital information on the whereabouts of these fugitives and we would urge them to get in touch.” Roger Critchell, Director of Operations for Crimestoppers, said: “This is something that we have never done before but we believe that broadcasting these fugitives’ faces right in their back yards will not only encourage the public to speak up but show these individuals that there really is nowhere to hide. There will be no avoiding the faces on this screen – they’ll be broadcast in all the popular ex-pat areas. I would urge anyone who recognises any of those faces to contact Crimestoppers anonymously. We don’t take personal details and you won’t have to give a statement or go to court. Many of these fugitives are currently living a life of leisure funded by serious crime. They cannot be allowed to hide forever, they must be brought to justice. Do the right thing and help us find them.” Captura, a multi-agency initiative between Crimestoppers, the NCA and Spanish authorities, is now in its ninth year. Its aim is to track down British fugitives believed to be hiding among ex-pat communities in the Spanish Costas. To date, 68 out of 86 wanted individuals have been apprehended. A fresh appeal in March this year saw three fugitives captured within a matter of weeks. Convicted killer Shane Walford, 38, from Coventry, was detained in the Canary Islands in March – just days after the appeal. Paul Monk, 54, from Romford, Essex was arrested in April at his home in Alicante, Spain. He was wanted for drugs offences. Jason McDonald, 37, originally from Bristol, was picked up by police at an apartment in Amsterdam hours later. He was also wanted for drugs offences. Crimestoppers and the NCA work closely with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in Madrid and with British and Spanish law enforcement agencies as part of the campaign. Information given to Crimestoppers can help locate the fugitives on the Captura list. For those people calling from

THE SPANISH La Liga football season is still about six weeks away, but while we wait, local side CD Torrevieja do have a couple of great friendly games against the likes of Cordoba, Hercules and Hull City over the next few weeks. As in so many aspects of their life, the Spanish are PASSIONATE about their football. Whilst attendances are in general much lower than say in leagues of comparable levels in the UK, that does not stop the average Spaniard being very knowledgeable and passionate about their local club. Yes, their local club, as Spaniards are much less fickle than British fans and it is the norm to follow your local team and/or the team of your parents. One reason for the lower attendances might be that every single La Liga (Primera División) game can be found on some TV station (albeit Pay Per View) and, with staggered kick-offs, it is possible to see four games every weekend on TV. Spain also has two excellent daily sports newspapers, which are predominantly football – Marca and AS La Liga is undoubtedly one of the strongest leagues in the world and, in Real Madrid and Barcelona and if you want to learn more about ‘The Beautiful Game’ find yourself a copy of Phil Ball’s book, ‘Morbo’, one of the greatest ever books about

It is a definite “mustread” for anybody in the slightest interested in Spanish football in particular and Spain in general. Of course one should make mention of a relatively knew phenomenon in Spanish football –

the rise and rise of the expat supporters clubs (peñas). The best examples are at La Liga’s Málaga, at CD Torrevieja and CD Montesinos, but all along the costas club presidents are trying to woo the expat fan. Tyler continues her preparation for the Great British championship that will be held on July 30th in Liverpool. On Saturday and Sunday it was the turn of gymnast Polina Berezina who became Spanish champion in the first category of the overall competition, this being a top-level category. In the apparatus finals Polina also won four golds in hoop, ball, clubs and ribbon, showing throughout the competition she deserved title of champion of Spain. This is the fourth year that Polina has taken her position at the top of the podium, after winning in 2010, 2011 and 2012 and now 2015. The next meeting for Polina is as part of the Spanish team in the World Cup, to be held in

more than their opponents. Why? Well, the Torry Army was more than 75% of the home crowd and similar stories can be told in Jávea, Tenerife, UD Lanzarote , CD Montesinos and at countless tercera and preferente grounds in expatshire. Finally, several British clubs have supporters’ clubs in Spain. Manchester City and Celtic have close ties with Spain but perhaps the most famous is Liverpool who have branches in Tenerife, Madrid , Barcelona and the Costa Blanca. In fact in 2007 a Liverpool Legends side with many of the greats from the 70s and 80s came to play a FC Torrevieja select in November 2008.

Walsh, Wark, Boulder, Case and many Liverpool favourites showed the big crowd that whilst they had perhaps lost a yard of speed, their football-brains were still very much alive, and Manchester City Legends were in Torrevieja for a Charity Game two years ago and hope to come back in 2016. Fútbol y Football Sergio Ramos and Keylor Navas of Real Madrid

AFTER 25-YEARS at Real Madrid, it has finally been confirmed that Iker Casillas is headed off to Portugal to work with his old friend and college, Julen Lopetegui, at Porto. Iker has been at the club almost all his life, spending 16 seasons in the first team and being Captain of both Spain and Real Madrid on La Liga, World Cup and European Cup success stories. His move will not open the door for further discussions with Manchester United player of the year, De Gea and could possibly be the end of his career as the Captain of Spain’s National Team. United are holding out for 40€ million or more for De Gea but may be open to a swap and money deal for the unsettled Sergio Ramos, Keylor Navas or even Cristiano or Gareth Bale. With the injured Navas seeming not to figure in the future of Real Madrid, they have been checking out Espanyol keeper Kiko Casilla, who used to also be a Real Madrid youth player, as a possible option. Although technically Barcelona have been banned by FIFA from signing anyone until January 2016, they rarely follow the rules, preferring to do what they like and pay the penalty later. Thus they have gone ahead and signed Arda Turan to join in the winter and Atletico have in turn signed Ferreira Carrasco from Monaco. However, the signing of Turan took place just days before the annual Barcelona Presidential election, so Barcelona have the right to sell him back, should the new president change his mind. You couldn’t make it up. Meanwhile Sevilla continue to rebuild their side with Immobile about to sign from Borussia Dortmund, and Konoplyanka, Rami, Escudero and N’Zonzi (Stoke City) joining Kakuta and Krohn-Dehli. Newly promoted Las Palmas made official the signing of goalkeeper Javi Varas, for the next two seasons on a free transfer from Valladolid. Diego Reyes is new player for Real Sociedad. The Mexican midfielder was given a one year contract. He’ll be a welcome edition after Real Sociedad could only manage a goalless draw against St. Johnstone for fourth place in their qualification league and are thus eliminated from the Europa League. At Barcelona, Joan Laporta will install Joan Oliver as CEO if he wins Barça's presidential elections. Oliver spoke with some concern about the Neymar-gate saga: "I think that when you look at the financial prospects for the coming years, there is one question mark: how much Neymar's final price will be. So far it is 100€ million, but with the legal proceedings that are ongoing, it could rise by 122€ million in pecuniary liabilities. Neymar could end up costing 222€ million."

all, should have an idea of their own fixture lists, with an expected start date for CD Torrevieja at least, on August 22nd or 23rd. Back into the rumours and sometime reality of football from outside Spain and the Dutch international striker Robin Van Persie visited to Istanbul last Sunday to close his move to Fenerbahce from Manchester United on a four-year deal. As revealed by Sky Sports, attacker Raheem Sterling is headed to the Etihad after Manchester City and Liverpool agreed a deal worth £49 million (around €68 million). In addition to digging their heels in over the sale of David de Gea, Manchester United have now come up with an impossible counter demand: Sergio Ramos and Keylor Navas in exchange for their Spanish international keeper. United also showed off their new kit and the world's most expensive football shirt. The Adidas kit sponsorship deal for next season will bring in 94€ million per season while club sponsor Chevrolet will guarantee 56.5€ million. Memphis Depay, who cost €33m from PSV

The pre-season matches and different tournaments around the world all start in July as everyone comes back from their summer hols. The start date for the 2015-16 campaign has yet to be decided. The CSD ruled that the league will start the weekend 22/23 August. However La Liga (LFP) are insisting on the weekend of 15/16 August. Meanwhile the Federation (RFEF) and players’ union (AFE) want it a week later. No news as to when the TV companies will want the season to start as yet, as they too have a say in what games are broadcast and when certain games are played; or so it would seem. The decision may have to go for arbitration to the sports commission (CSD) while regardless of what anyone wants, the new season fixtures should be fixed and published after the Federation general assembly meet today, Tuesday 14th July, if and only if, all the different bodies can agree to when the season will actually kick off. And even this could still change as Elche are still awaiting a decision on their appeal again being relegated for financial matters, despite being mid table. The decision on Elche will also decide the final line up of the first and second divisions. However, it’s never that simple in Spain and all could change once again if any of the clubs in the top two divisions fail to meet their financial obligations by July 31st and end up being relegated such as Real Murcia were last season. And speaking of Real Murcia, while the broad of directors have backed the club and announced they do have the finance available for this season, millions of euros are still owed to SUMA and social security, plus additional money to former players, with almost any one of these entities being able to throw another spanner in the works of the club as a viable entity for 2015/16. Another local club who apparently owe about five million in taxes is Cartagena, who are in talks with the city council and various investors to try and keep the club at its present level. Which brings us to August by which time the likes of CD Torrevieja, CF Torreveija, Santa Pola, Orihuela, CD Montesinos, Horadada et

was the first to try on the new shirt. "He is one of the greatest talents of his age", Louis van Gaal said on Friday. Not getting to war a Utd short next season are Falcao who has ended up on loan to Chelsea; Tom Cleverley (Everton) and the double swoop by Fenerbahçe for Nani and Robin van Persie. Chilean Ángelo Henríquez moved to Dynamo Zagreb and Chicharito is set to leave. That leaves just two strikers in Wayne Rooney and James Wilson so the club needs a new stricker. David de Gea and Ángel Di María could be the next to go. Goalkeeper Víctor Valdés is staying, but Keylor Navas or Hugo Lloris (Tottenham) could be arriving. Bastian Schweinsteiger's time at Bayern Munich has come to an end and he has joined United who have also signed Italian International Torino defender Matteo Darmian for an undisclosed fee, reported to be £12.7m. Meanwhile in the fabulous world of gossip and rumour, allegedly Liverpool have offered £22m for Real Madrid's 24-year-old Russia winger Denis Cheryshev and Manchester

United want Valencia's 27-year-old centreback Nicolas Otamendi. Louis van Gaal's also wants Southampton's 25-year-old France midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin and Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke. The 24-year-old would be a cheaper option than Napoli's 27year-old forward Gonzalo Higuain and Bayern's 25-year-old forward Thomas Muller. Tottenham Hotspur are preparing an offer for Everton's £20m-rated midfielder James McCarthy, 24 but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has told manager Mauricio Pochettino the club must sell at least six squad players before making any more major signings. Bournemouth are interested in signing Queens Park Rangers' 26-year-old striker Charlie Austin and are set to make a £7.5m bid for Nottingham Forest's 25-year-old winger Michail Antonio while Arsenal are deciding whether to make a surprise move for £10mrated Manchester United defender Jonny Evans, 27, who is also wanted by West Bromwich Albion. Arsenal defender Calum Chambers has rejected an offer to spend next season on loan at his old club Southampton while across town Chelsea have expressed an interest in signing 26-year-old International midfielder Charles Aranguiz, who was one of Chile's best performers at the World Cup last summer. Everton boss Roberto Martinez wants to take former Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic to Goodison Park and Orlando City owner Augusto da Silva claims they are "in the middle of negotiations" with Manchester United forward Javier Hernandez, who is currently out of action with a broken collarbone. Former Republic of Ireland winger Kevin Kilbane believes Stoke City have made a great purchase after signing his former international team-mate Shay Given and staying with goalies, Petr Cech will wear 33 at Arsenal next season Former Manchester United and England defender Phil Neville declared himself satisfied as his first week as Valencia's assistant manager came to a mixed end. The Spanish club defeated Southampton before losing to Werder Bremen on penalties in a pre-season tournament. "Good training for the team now home to Valencia," Neville tweeted in Spanish after Saturday's game. And finally, a crowd of 4,257 watched Hereford FC's first ever match. The club, founded by supporters after Hereford United went into liquidation last year, defeated FC United of Manchester 1-0 at Edgar Street. This season they will play in the Midland Football League, the ninth tier of English football. Apparently.
