It could be said “it's the same but different” to describe your favourite local read. Since 2004, The CoastRider has built up a strong and loyal following. Now under new ownership and publishing on a different day, the new CoastRider team of journalists, photographers, designers, contributors, businesspeople and law team, plan to bring you something new to help brighten up your life on the Costa. The new CoastRider is published every Saturday, giving you the opportunity to plan for the weekend and the week ahead. We are the first and only local, free weekly English Language publication in Spain to publish on a Saturday, adding to the number of days you can pick up something new to read and to help enhance your Costa lifestyle; whether you are living here or just visiting. Since many other publications already carry local press releases and translations of Spanish newspapers, which you've most likely read already, there is no point in us publishing the same thing, so at the CoastRider we will be bringing you something new and fresh, while keeping a few favourites that we've made popular over the years. Denia: Hollywood’s Port on the Med by Bob Yareham Mia Farrow became a Hollywood star not in Hollywood but in Denia, where the film about the American revolutionary sailor, rather than the Led Zeppelin keyboard player, ‘John Paul Jones’ was made in 1959. So well was she received in this film directed by her father John, that she was named Queen of the local fiestas. Her brother John Charles Farrow had a brief part as John Paul Jones, the young Scottish boy who throws an egg at a British officer who tries to bring the locals to their senses by banning the use of bagpipes and kilts in line with UK health regulations. This scene supposedly takes place at a small square in a Scottish village, although it was actually filmed in the Placita Sant Antoni in Denia. Hannah, sorry, Mia, and her sisters were all placed in the American School in Madrid for a while, until Mia got herself expelled, (according to her for shaking a bottle of fizzy drink and then spurting the contents all over the place,) after which her mother, actress Maureen O’Sullivan, most famous for her role as Jane alongside Johnny Weissmuller’s Tarzan, moved them all to the Santa Maria del Camino school. The port of Denia played the role of both a Scottish fishing port (where Jones was born) and Portsmouth (the American one in New Hampshire), while the beaches of Javea and Benidorm and the Royal Palace of Madrid co-starred. Robert Stack, who later played Elliot Ness in The Untouchables TV series, played John Paul Jones, and was often to be seen running up and down the sandy Arenal beach at Javea with his wife Rosemary and his daughter Elizabeth. When John Paul returns home to attack the port of Whitehaven, where ironically he began his naval career, the castle his men capture was in fact Denia castle, originally built in the 11th century and located in the city centre behind the port.The decision to use Denia was largely due to the enthusiasm of one of the crew, John Cabrera, whose family originally came from there. The film makers’ presence in Denia would bring many more film makers to the town, which takes its name from the Roman Goddess Diana, and whose impressive castle in the town centre, was built by the Moors in the 11th century. So pleasantly authentic was Denia as a typical port of just about anywhere else, that filmmakers returned there for other films, such as bits of ‘Krakatoa: East of Java’ (it’s actually west of Java, but when the producers found out they considered it too expensive to
correct the mistake.) The brief port scenes during the 1967 version of ‘Cervantes,’ as well as Richard Lester’s ‘The Three Musketeers’ and ‘The Four Musketeers’ were also shot in Denia, and in fact, when Michael York calls out that he has at last spotted Dover, he is in fact in front of Cap (Cape) de Sant Antoni. It’s a pretty long way from the Costa Blanca seaside resort of Denia, to Singapore, and yet a bit of paint here, an Oriental face there and they became one and the same in ‘Krakatoa,’ largely shot in Spanish studios with a lot of sea and men throwing buckets of water and rubber rocks at the actors. It’s a case of the far-fetched taking place in the far-flung as a disparate group of adventurers seek fortune or a lost son, all in the shadow of Krakatoa, which one moment is a tiny island, then a massive chain of islands with dangerous straits, emptying itself of 20 times its own weight in molten rock. The hot air balloon scene is particularly comical as the balloon, out of control, works its way along a canyon of lava (pink, tinted water) and up into the crater, at which point the occupants decide it might be a good idea to shed some ballast. At one moment the ship is taken over by thirty desperate criminals until the noble Captain sees them off armed with a fire hose. Well, it could happen... Denia is used for the opening dock scenes, although most of the rest, including Krakatoa, consists of plastic models. Occasionally, when the camera swings the wrong way you can see white villas on the shore where hundreds of Northern European pensioners have made their homes and their own little Germanys and little Belgiums. I think my favourite part is when the Tsunami hits the ship as it flees; although the Captain looks much better with the waves breaking on his manly chest and so the ship has to be facing the island from which they are supposedly escaping. The ‘Batavia Queen’, the name of the ship in the film was in fact the ‘Enrique Maynes’ from Sagunto, although built in the UK in the 19th century for the Valencian ship owner J.J. Sister. It was finally scrapped 1968. Although made largely in Shepperton Studios, London, HMS Defiant also used the boats in Denia’s harbour. In some scenes the distinctive
Montgo Mountain between Javea and Denia can be identified. Alec Guinness and Anthony Quayle in fact took advantage of a two month break in the shooting of Lawrence of Arabia to ‘knock off’ this minor film, during which time the crew transferred from Jordan to Spain. Guinness plays good cop to Dirk Bogarde’s bad cop in a naval adventure with the Spithead Mutiny as its setting. English sailors prove once again that with just a minor reduction in flogging they are prepared to give their all for a decent chance of killing Frenchmen. The sea scenes were all filmed around Denia, even though the action supposedly took place at Spithead, Corsica and Italy. Denia was also an embarkation and invasion point for British forces during the 18th century Spanish War of Succession and later an export port for the British-run currant trade. Like so many people these days, the whole crew of the film stayed at hotels in Benidorm; and in fact the distinctive ‘Peacock Island’ in Benidorm’s bay can clearly be seen when a group of marines storm a beach in one part of ‘John Paul Jones’ as the capture Providence Island in the Bahamas from the evil British. More recently, in the autumn of 2010, Bruce Willis was on the Costa Blanca at La Granadella, Moraira and Denia shooting a modern thriller, ‘The Cold Light of Day.’ In the scene where Henry Cavell swims ashore to visit a chemist’s, he actually runs through Placita Sant Antoni in Denia, where ‘John Paul Jones’ was filmed all those years ago, and where a tasteless statue recalls the 50th anniversary. When I pointed out to the tourist authorities of Denia that the monument was ugly and inappropriate, they responded that it was popular with children, who like to climb on it. I should have said something about trees, but I understand that these people have their sense of humour surgically removed on appointment. Costa Castaway One of our new features in The CoastRider is our Costa Castaway. We take our hats off to Desert Island Discs for the idea and we have asked a number of local folk and a few international celebrities about their favourite music. This week it's the turn of film buff, author, lecturer and CoastRider columist, Bob Yareham. Bob moved to Spain more than three decades ago and has lived in or near Valencia since 1981. For 16 years he worked with the British Council but took the plunge and became Self-employed 2001. Bob has fully integrated into Spanish life. His Valencian wife, Mage is a primary school teacher and they have three sons. Bob has published various books, the most recent being 'Movies Made in Spain' and in complete contrast; 'English Beauty', about the English language. Bob is a Bachelor of Education and has also put on his comfy shoes and walked the Camino de Santiago. 1st Record Bought: BY: The first album I bought was '20/20' by the Beach Boys. On Thursday October 6h, one of the most successful fund raising activities was celebrated. The Torrevieja Solidarity 2017 calendar is now in its twelfth year and is part of a special campaign set up and produced by local historian, author and writer Andy Ormiston. The Calendar is available from various charity shops and other organisations for only 5.00€.. The special presentation and announcement of the new calendar was made in the offices of the main
calendar sponsors, Aroca Sequier, abogados, Urb. Rocajuna Torrevieja. The event also featured the presentation of three major donations to local organisations: Caritas, AFA Torrevieja and HELP Vega Baja of 3,200€ to each NGO. For those wanting to lnow more about the local fiestas, festivals and activities, this colourful calendar is a must have and also makes a fabulous gift. The calender provides useful information about national and regional holidays and fiestas, cultural
events, places to visit and useful telephone numbers as well as U.K. and Irish Bank Holidays. The 2017 calendar theme is “La Bella” of Torrevieja and is dedicated to the women and their integration in Torrevieja'’s fiestas, customs and history. All costs for the production of the calendar are covered completely thanks to the patronage of Alamo International, Aroca Seiquer lawyers, Atlas Insurance Agency, MAPFRE Insurance and Currency Direct. The calendar is available to several charities
and organisations to raise funds for their projects. Principally the calendars are available from the shops of AGE CONCERN, HELP, AEEC, AFA ALZHEIMER'S ASSOCIATION, K9, REACH OUT, etc. as well as from local performance groups, RASCALS, Stagestruck plus the La Mata Natural Park volunteers. The calendar on average raises over 8,000€ each year for diverse and needy causes. 2017 will be the 12th calendar produced which to date has raised over 70,000€ for local causes.

'Margaritaville' Key Lime Pie If you ever go or have been to Key West, the one place you have to visit is singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett's restaurant Margaritaville. Named after the 1977 song of the same name, "Margaritaville" is from the album 'Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes'. This song was written about a drink Buffett discovered at Lung's Cocina del Sur restaurant on Anderson Lane in Austin, Texas and the first huge surge of tourists who descended on Key West, Florida around that time. He wrote most of the song that night at a friend's house in Austin, and finished it while spending time in Key West. In the United States "Margaritaville" reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and went to number one on the Easy Listening chart, also peaking at #13 on the Hot Country Songs chart. Billboard ranked it number 14 on its 1977 Pop Singles year-end chart. It remains Buffett's highest charting solo single. Jimmy Buffett's most famous song, Mararitaville, is an anthem to being drunk and lazy on the beach. However, through a lot of hard work and industriousness, the 66-year-old beach bum has turned it into the most lucrative song in the
world. The four-minute Martaritaville, with just 208 words in its lyrics, is the basis for Buffett's massive empire of restaurants, casinos, resorts and merchandise bringing in, conservatively, $100million a year in revenues for the singer. In 1985, Buffett opened his first successful "Margaritaville" retail store in Key West, Florida, following a failed Margaritaville in Gulf Shores, Alabama. This has spawned dozens of others, hotels and casinos. The most famous desert to accompany your Margarita during your visit is their Key Lime Pie. Their secret recipe has been recreated by Todd Wilbur who says: "Most of the key lime pie recipes circulating, including the recipe found on bottles of key lime juice, have a glaring error: They don't make enough filling to fit properly into a standard 9-inch graham crust pie shell. Come on, if we're going to make a beautifully thick key lime pie like the one served at Jimmy Buffet's restaurants we need to use something like 1 1/2 cans of sweetened condensed milk, or two
cups of the stuff. The clone recipe for the pie is a simple one that's for sure, with only four ingredients including the pie shell. But don't stop there. I'm also including a special way to make mango sauce by simply reducing a couple cans of Kern's mango juice. And there's a raspberry sauce recipe here that's made easily with frozen raspberries. These two sauces are used to jazz up the plate at the restaurant are certainly optional for your clone version, even though I've made them as easy as, uh, you know." For those budding desert lovers out there, this should satisfy about eight mouths at the dinner table. You will need: 2 cups sweetened condensed milk 6 egg yolks 2/3 cup key lime juice CRUST 1 graham cracker pie crust MANGO SAUCE 2 (11 1/2 ounce) mango juice
And to make your beach-bum day complete, how about a Margarita. combining water and raspberries in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil then reduce heat and simmer raspberries for 10 minutes. Use a potato masher or a large spoon to crush the raspberries as they boil. Strain raspberry seeds from water, then put the liquid back into the saucepan and add the sugar. Bring mixture back to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes or until the sauce thickens. Cover and cool sauce until you are ready to serve the pie. SERVING ASSEMBLY:. Prepare dessert by dribbling some mango sauce and some raspberry sauce onto a small plate (you can use spoons or squirt bottles for this). Place a slice of pie onto the sauce. Add a dollop of whipped cream to the top of the pie slice.
RASPBERRY SAUCE 1 1/2 cups water 2 cups frozen raspberries 1/2 cup granulated sugar GARNISHES whipped cream 4 slices limes (thin slices) DIRECTIONS NOTE:. I consider the time to make the sauce as "active time" because you really need to attend to them while they cook so as not to burn them. Stirring them with a whisk or wooden spoon is recommended. FILLING:. Pre-heat oven to 325ÂşF. Use an electric mixer on medium speed to combine sweetened condensed milk, egg yolks, and lime juice. Mix just until ingredients are wellcombined. Pour filling into graham pie shell and bake on middle rack for 20 minutes or until filling jiggles only slightly when shaken. Cool. Cover pie and chill in refrigerator for a couple hours before serving. WHILE PIE CHILLS MAKE SAUCES:. MANGO SAUCE:. Make mango sauce by bringing two cans of Kern's mango juice to a boil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes or until sauce thickens. Cover and chill. RASPBERRY SAUCE:. Make raspberry sauce
Garnish the cream with one half of a thin lime slice on top of the whipped cream. Makes 8 servings.

Pour into your favourite glass. Garnish with a lime wedge. Makes 2-3 drinks. KEY WEST MARGARITA Ingredients: 2 1/2 oz. Gold Tequila 2 oz. Melon Liqueur 3 oz. PiĂąa Colada Mix 1 1/2 oz. Lime Juice 1 1/2 oz. Orange Juice 3 Dashes of Grenadine 1 1/2 cups Ice Directions: Fill ice reservoir with ice. Pour ingredients in glass jar. Concoct until smooth. Pour into a glass. Makes 2-3 drinks. Enjoy...

Jimmy Buffett
Born on Christmas Day 1946 in Pascagoula, Mississippi, James William "Jimmy" Buffett is best known for his music, which often portrays an "island escapism" lifestyle. Together with his Coral Reefer Band, Buffett has recorded hit songs including "Margaritaville" (ranked 234th on the Recording Industry Association of America's list of "Songs of the Century") and "Come Monday". He has a devoted base of fans known as "Parrotheads".
Aside from his career in music, Buffett is also a best-selling writer and is involved in two restaurant chains named after two of his best-known songs, "Cheeseburger in Paradise" and "Margaritaville". He owns the Margaritaville Cafe restaurant chain and co-developed the Cheeseburger in Paradise restaurant chain. In 2015, Forbes estimated Buffett's annual income at $36 million. Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville. A state of mind is now a state of being. But how did Margaritaville come into a "state of being?" Better yet, how did Margaritaville become a "state of mind?" How could some guy armed only with writers instruments; a pen and a legal pad, create all that is "Margaritaville?" The answer is simple: Imagination. Jimmy Buffett arrived in Nashville in 1969 prepared to embark on a recording career. Gerry Wood, an old JB associate and currently a writer for Billboard Magazine recalls that, "Barnaby Records signed the artist to a two-album contract--and Jimmy went into the studio to record Down to Earth." "Unfortunately, the album didn't sell well. Undaunted, Jimmy went back into the studio to record his second album. Daunted, Barnaby Records "lost" the master tapes for this album titled High Cumberland Jubilee. A convenient excuse for a fledgling label that didn't want another no play/ no pay LP." "In a
miracle that makes Lourdes look like a carnival shell game, these "lost" Buffett tapes were "found" years later, after Jimmy had become a star, and released on Janus Records. These first two albums show all the potential and promise that was soon to be realized." In a story told many times, Jimmy headed for Miami for an alleged booking date. However, when he got there, no job. Settling in at old friend Jerry Jeff Walker's house allowed him time to regroup. A weekend drive down the overseas highway (A1A) landed Jimmy in the town that would prove to be the biggest influence in his musical career, the town that would provide the catalyst for "Margaritaville," the town that continues to play a large role in his life, Key West.
Jimmy plunged from the frying pan of Nashville into the fire of Key West. Key West servicemen, and shrimpers populated the island that had a reputation for harbouring those seeking a lifestyle somewhat to the left of norm. Boarded store fronts dotted Duval St., and any dilapidated building that housed a business invariably served alcohol; over or under the counter. The proverbial end of the rainbow carried pot, but no gold. This was the cultural "melting pot" that was to inspire Jimmy to write "The Wino and I Know", "My Head Hurts, My Feet Stink, and I Don't Love Jesus", "Tin Cup Chalice", and "I Have Found Me A Home" among others. As Bob Anderson says about Jimmy in 1986 interview in High Times, "Every outlaw has a good story, and Buffett has an eye and ear for them." Former Coral Reefer, Greg `Fingers'
Taylor recalls the early days in an interview with Diddy Wah Diddy, a Mississippi Blues newsletter. "In about 1972 I met Buffett. He was playing at the Hub, the Union Building at the University of Southern Mississippi. I was the local harp player, and would play with everybody. So I was just wandering through the Hub one night, and there was this guy with long blonde hair and a moustache playing `Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw' to about five little old ladies on break from their night class. I didn't know anything about him. I enjoyed some of the songs I was hearing, and of course I wanted to sit in. So we got up there and it was just sort of a chemistry, just one of those things. I think he had been looking for somebody else to go on the road with him. It's sort of lonely out there on the road. The next day I was driving him to his parents house in Mobile, the sun was coming up, and Jimmy was singing, there was a bonding that occurred there at that point; we knew that we were going to play music together somewhere down the line." All told the 70's were great years for Jimmy and The Coral Reefers. Jimmy aligned himself with a new management company, Frontline Management, and created a personal and professional relationship with the then head of Frontline, Irving Azoff. In a 1978 interview with Bill King of The Atlanta Constitution regarding his business affairs, Jimmy said, "I run `em. I've always been in control of what I was doing and (Irving) came along and he's just the greatest at it and he's helping me tremendously. But he respects my knowledge and opinions because I've had to put up with a lot to get where I've got." It was Irving Azoff who arranged for Jimmy and the Reefers to open for the Eagles, the biggest group at the time (1977), thus giving him his first big exposure that allowed him to become a headliner.
That same year Changes in Latitude is released and goes to #12 on the Billboard Magazine Chart. `Margaritaville" rises to #8 on Billboard Pop Chart, and becomes the definitive Jimmy Buffett song. Changes is also Jimmy's first platinum album, selling over one million copies Buffett has written three No. 1 best sellers. Tales from Margaritaville and Where Is Joe Merchant?; both spent over seven months on The New York Times Best Seller fiction list. The Albatros visits Torrevieja
Another day in Torrevieja's maritime history was marked last Saturday, October 8th, when the City of Salt welcomed its second cruise ship, the Five Star MS Albatros from Phoenix Reisen. The luxury cruise ship was built in 1973 as the Royal Viking Sea, and after stretching becoming the Royal Odyssey before moving to sister company NCL as the Norwegian Star, then Norwegian Star 1 and finally the Crown before becoming the MS Albatros. The Albatros is one of the Phoenix Reisen ships, together with Amadea and Artania. The length of two football fields, the 28,518-ton, 812passenger cruise ship Albatros debuted in 1973 in the fleet of Royal Viking Line. MS Albatros launched as part of Phoenix Reisen Cruises in 2004 and is the second ship to bear the name, as well as line’s oldest vessel. This arrival marked Torrevieja's second and final scheduled cruise ship visit. Torrevieja's present Pentapartido government have not made any announcement of any
discussions with other possible cruise lines to visit the city. However, Eduardo Dolon, the city's former Mayor and Deputy of the Costa Blanca Tourism Board is working on this through the Board's Cruise Ship department which was formed last year. The earliest timescale for a possible scheduled cruise ship visit to Torrevieja would be in 2018. No announcements have been made about whether or not representatives of the city attended SeaTrade Med last month or will be attending SeaTrade Fort Lauderdale in March 2017, to meet with the world's cruise line representatives.

ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE by THE BEATLES
The Beatles classic All You Need Is Love was played this for the first time on the "Our World" project, the first worldwide TV special. Broadcast in 24 countries on June 25, 1967, the show was 6 hours long and featured music from 6 continents, with The Beatles representing Britain. It was watched by over 400 million in 25 countries The Beatles were supposedly recording this live during the show, but they used a prerecorded backing track and John Lennon's vocal was redone a few hours later. Eric Clapton mimed guitar on this during the special.
The concept of the song was born out of a request to bring a song that was going to be understood by people of all nations. The writing began in late May of 1967, with John and Paul working on separate songs. It was decided that John's "All You Need Is Love" was the better choice because of its easy to understand message of love and peace. The song was easy to play, the words easy to remember and it encompassed the feeling of the world's youth during that period. "All You Need Is Love" was a popular saying in the '60s antiwar movement. The song was released in the middle of the Summer of Love (1967). It was a big part of the vibe. John Lennon wrote this as a continuation of the idea he was trying to express in his 1965 song "The Word." John was fascinated by how slogans effect the masses and was trying to capture the same essence as songs like "We Shall Overcome." He once stated, "I like slogans. I like advertising. I love the telly." In a 1971 interview about his song "Power To The People," he was asked if that song was propaganda. He said, "Sure. So was 'All You Need Is Love.' I'm a revolutionary artist. My art is dedicated to change." Musically, this song is very unusual. The chorus is only one note, and the song is in a rare 7/4 tempo. It was not until 1983 and the publication of the in the book John Lennon: In My Life by Pete Shotton and Nicholas Schaffner that it was revealed that John Lennon was the primary composer of the song. It is typical of Lennon: Three long notes ("love -love -love") and the rise of excitement with at first speaking, then recital, then singing, then the climax and finally the redemption. This as opposed to McCartney's conventional verse, verse, middle part, verse or A,A,B,A. Lennon felt that a good song must have a rise of excitement, climax and redeeming. Ringo's second son, Jason, was born the day this hit Number 1 in the US. Jason is also a drummer. n the orchestral ending, you can hear pieces of both "Greensleeves," a Bach two-part invention (by George Martin) and Glen Miller's "In The Mood." Royalties were paid to Miller for his contribution. McCartney sang the chorus to The Beatles 1963 hit, "She Loves You" at the end: "She loves you yeah yeah yeah... sold for 1 Million pounds in the summer of 2005. Lennon left them in the BBC studios after The Beatles' last live TV appearance, and they were salvaged by an employee. The Beatles were asked to come up with a song with a message understood by everyone. "It was an inspired song and they really wanted to give the world a message", said Brian Epstein. "The nice thing about it is that it cannot be misinterpreted. It is a clear message saying that love is everything." According to journalist Jade Wright, "Lennon was fascinated by the power of slogans to unite people and never afraid to create art out of propaganda. When asked in 1971 whether songs like "Give Peace a Chance" and "Power to the People" were propaganda songs, he answered: 'Sure. So was All You Need Is Love. I'm a revolutionary artist. My art is dedicated to change.'" The band started work on recording the song on 14 June 1967, with Lennon playing harpsichord, Paul McCartney on double bass, George Harrison on violin (an instrument he had never previously played), and Ringo Starr on drums. They recorded 33 takes, choosing the tenth take as the best. Over the following days they recorded overdubs including vocals, piano (played by their producer, George Martin), banjo (by Lennon), guitar and orchestral parts. The Our World broadcast cut to Abbey Road studios at 8:54 PM London time, about 40 seconds earlier than expected. Martin and engineer Geoff Emerick were drinking scotch whisky to calm their nerves for the task of mixing the audio for a live worldwide broadcast, and had to scramble the bottle and glasses beneath the mixing desk when they were told they were about to go on air. For the broadcast, the Beatles (except for Starr) were seated on stools, accompanied by a small studio orchestra. They were surrounded by friends and acquaintances seated on the floor, who sang along with the refrain during the fade-out. These guests included Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton,
Marianne Faithfull, Keith Richards, Keith Moon, Graham Nash, Mike McGear, Patti Boyd and Jane Asher. The performance was not completely live: the Beatles, the orchestra, and guests were overdubbing onto a pre-recorded rhythm track mainly consisting of piano, harpsichord, drums and backing vocals. The producers of Our World were initially unhappy about the use of backing tracks, but it was insisted upon by Martin, who said that "we can't just go in front of 350 million people without some work". The full Our World segment opens with the band and company listening to the raw backing track, as commentator Steve Race explained the process in voiceover. The segment initially showed the band simulating a rehearsal or rough take for about a minute, before Martin suggesting that the orchestral musicians should take their places for the recording as the tape was rewound, followed by the band's performance with the orchestral section. Among a number of placards featuring the word "love" translated into a variety of languages, a sign was held up during the clip with the words "Come Back Milly" – a plea to an aunt of McCartney's who was then in Australia visiting her son and grandchildren. The programme was broadcast in black-andwhite (colour television had yet to commence broadcasting in Britain and most of the world). The Beatles' footage was colourised, based on photographs of the event, for the 1995 documentary The Beatles Anthology. The colour version is also included in the Beatles' 2015 video compilation 1. The publishing rights to "All You Need Is Love" and most other Beatles songs are controlled by the Sony corporation and Michael Jackson, which means The Beatles cannot prevent a company from re-recording the song and using it in a commercial. When asked what his favourite lyric is during an interview with NME, John Lennon's son Sean replied: "My list of favourite things changes from day to day. I like when my dad said: 'There's nothing you can know that isn't known/ Nothing you can see that isn't shown/ Nowhere you can go that isn't where you're meant to be.' It seems to be a good representation of the sort of enlightenment that came out of the '60s."

Getting in the Groove By Keith Nicol Thirty-One years ago this week, I took on my first Disc Jockey position on a cruise ship. After working in Radio and doing mobile discos since the late seventies, I packed one suitcase with more than 50 little round 7-inch discs with a hole in the middle, known to an older generation as 45's, and set off to Monte Carlo to join Sun Line's Stella Solaris as she prepared to cross the Atlantic and cruise down to Rio, as in 1986 Halley's Comet was high in the sky for all to see.
It was a bumper year for the music business and a year that would change the industry for ever due to one special event: the Live Aid concert in London's Wembley Stadium on 13 July. Held to follow-up the previous year's charity record "Do They Know It's Christmas?", the biggest selling single ever at the time, popular acts such as The Who, U2 and Queen performed in front of an estimated audience of 1.9 billion viewers. It raised
£150 million to help famine in Ethiopia, accompanied by Bob Geldof F'ing and Blinding live on both sides of the Pond. Dire Straits released their album Brothers in Arms in May, one of the first ever albums to be released on compact disc and the format's first million-seller and included the number 4 hit "Money for Nothing", I might add than onboard the Stella Solaris we had not much more than two Technic 1200 decks and a cassette player. None of us really new what was to follow with the CD, iPods and the MP3. The best selling single of the year and a must for a slow dance on the disco floor was Jennifer Rush, who entered the top 75 in June with the power ballad "The Power of Love", which remained in the chart for months without entering the top 40. When it finally did in September, it quickly hit number 1, where it remained for five weeks and was the biggest selling single of the year. It sold over a million copies, however it would be the last single of the decade to do so, and there
would not be another million-seller until 1991. Artists Direct – Spain popped back stage for a chat with Chloe Leigh Who are you and what do you do? I am a singer / entertainer and actress, I perform all types of music from Country to Rock as well as a tribute to Cher, and my Abba Show will also be making a comeback real soon.
How did you start in the business? I started at 14/15 in my first band, we all were that age and gigged for free to gain experience, I was super shy!!! What would you be doing if you were not an entertainer? Probably an English Teacher or in business as a retail owner (I used to run retail companies plus a shop of my own in Gran Canarias). As an entertainer who has been your biggest influence? Whitney Houston and all the oldies like Dionne Warwick, Petula Clark, and Connie Francis. Do you ever get nervous or have you suffered stage fright? Oh yes, had stage fright quite recently for no reason, I always get a little nervous at new gigs/venues but it soon passes, it’s normal. What was your best moment? Performing (5 times) in front of 25 thousand people screaming at me, singing for 3.5thousand at the 02 comes a close second place. What has been your worst moment? Singing in bars with no one inside - soul destroying! It’s boring, robotic and makes me want to pack it all in (until the next good night). What’s the best piece of advice you have received or would give someone starting out in the business? Learn stage craft! You can be the best singer in the world but if you can’t work a stage and a crowd then you best stay off it and stay in the studios, it’s something you learn to master yourself. Any little anecdotes or interesting stories? (perhaps not wise to name names) I’ve worked with a few celebrities in my time and some amazing musicians, some have been so
drunk we have had to cover their backs but we are all human, they get nervous too! But when your male dancer who is wearing little sparkly shorts / pants and he’s dancing all out (ALL OUT) and he’s getting a standing ovation ... You have to laugh, couldn’t do anything else. I was asked to do a gig in a Swinging Resort, what an eye opener, when people say imagine your audience naked ...no need ...they was !!! All of them naked - naked dancers, naked air guitarists etc. I can honestly say I’VE SEEN IT ALL, and yes I was re-booked ! Ha-ha
AFTER HOURS AT THE WATERING HOLE Tell us about yourselves My name is Sharron and I run The Watering Hole jointly with my friend and business partner Jimmy. We have been here for just over 3 months now. I have lived in Spain for the past 7 years and Jimmy for 2 years. What made you open a bar? Both of us have worked in the bar/restaurant trade since we left school, separately as we didn’t meet until Jimmy came over here. Like many people we wanted to work for ourselves and had talked about the possibility of going into business together some time ago. I found out that The Watering Hole was available, decided I wanted to go for it and invited Jimmy to come on board. Where did the inspiration for the name come from? It had previously been called The Watering Hole, people were used to that name and we liked it anyway. Who does the cooking? And how would you describe your style? Unfortunately at this time we have no kitchen facilities so cannot do meals, much to Jimmy’s dismay as he is a qualified chef. It is something we
hope to do in the future. At the moment we do cold snacks, sandwiches and the like. We also do afternoon teas which are proving very popular. What’s your favourite dish on the menu? The afternoon teas of course. I have to say that we have such a lovely selection of cakes that this would probably be my favourite even if we did do a full menu. I heard a rumour
that one afternoon when I wasn’t here and some ladies were enjoying their tea and cakes that two people from whatson-costablanca.com came in for a coffee and were so enamoured with the cakes that they cheekily tried to procure a couple. Apparently the ladies stood firm and saw them off empty-handed! Favourite day of the week? Both of us particularly like Thursdays and Fridays as they are our
entertainment days. Thursday afternoons we do card bingo which is always well attended then on Friday nights we have karaoke with our resident hosts Cathy and Malc. Always great fun. We pride ourselves on being a friendly bar. We have had quite a few ladies say to us that they feel comfortable coming here for a drink on their own which, as a woman, I know is unfortunately not the case everywhere. Any interesting tales? We are normally busy but one cold dark weekday night recently there was just me and one male regular customer in the bar for ages. Eventually I said: “Enough of this, let’s have a party, just the two of us.” We turned the music up loud and danced wildly on the terrace. It was just for fun but before we knew it we had a bar full of people. Funny thing is on that evening it wasn’t just us empty there didn’t appear to be anybody about at all…and then suddenly there they all were. Five money tips every teen should know For most teens, high school is an exciting time for those sweet, first tastes of independence: first dates, first cars, first paychecks. As low-stakes as some of these milestones may seem, there's one area that deserves some extra attention in every family: personal finance. Today's teens are spending $260 billion a year in the U.S., yet only 17 states require completion of at least one financial literacy course for high school graduation. Consider the fact that 3.3 million high school students are expected to graduate in 2017, and what we have is too many young adults heading out into the real world lacking even a basic understanding of money management. "That means today's young people are spending and borrowing more than ever without understanding the consequences," says Wendy Kha, a San Francisco teen who was selected by Boys & Girls Clubs of America to serve as national ambassador for its teen financial literacy program called Money Matters: Make it Count, created in collaboration with Charles Schwab Foundation. Taking part in this program had a profound impact on Kha, along with over 725,000 other Club teens who have completed Money Matters. As an advocate for teaching financial responsibility, she offers a few tips for parents and teens. Save early, save often: as soon as you start earning money or receiving an allowance, you should open a savings account. Parents and teens can decide together how much of the earnings should be set aside for savings. "Whenever you earn or receive money, put at least 10 percent of it into a savings account," Kha says. "I personally set aside 25 percent of my income from my part-time job to help me save up for big-ticket purchases,

The best thing teens can do is prepare for situations that lead to impulse purchases. Start by making a list of needs and wants. If you know ahead of time that your car insurance is coming due, you will be less likely to spend all your money on concert tickets. Keep track of spending: now that you're aware of how much you need for necessities and what's left over for the fun stuff, it's time to start keeping track of everything you spend. It doesn't matter if you use cash or a debit card, and it doesn't matter if you keep track with an app or a small notebook. Just be sure to log every single purchase. Even small things, including the taco from the food truck or trail mix from the vending machine, should be entered into the log. Being mindful of every dollar you spend will help you understand your spending
Build good credit: Money decisions you make even now as a teenager will make a difference later. Good credit is essential to getting a good rate on a car loan or leasing an apartment later on. That credit score is an indication to future lenders that you are responsible and will pay on time. To build good credit, always pay your bills on time and carefully manage your checking account. If you choose to get a credit card, never charge more than you can afford to repay in full each month. Get a reality check: before graduating high school and going out on your own, it's important to sit down and get a solid idea of what it takes to make ends meet while living the lifestyle you want. Look for a financial education program geared for teens. A good one will cover budgeting, goal setting and planning for the future. For example, Kha learned a lot from one component of Money Matters called the Reality Store, a hands-on experience that helps teens envision the realities of adult life - understanding careers and salaries, managing income and expenses as well as planning savings and investments. These lessons are also reinforced in a new interactive feature of the program - a digital game called $KY. Players navigate financial decisions and are rewarded for managing cash and credit wisely, adding a fun new way to learn these important life skills. "It's a lot to digest," Kha says. "But I know when I head off to college, my eyes will be wide open, and that will help me make better money decisions."

A Jewel In The Crown
Titanium have some jewels in their property portfolio but nothing more special or as interesting as this well preserved Palace, which has never been open to the public, This is why we have chosen the Palace of The Marques de Rafal in Orihuela to be our first property of the month. Situated in the heart of the old town of Orihuela, it is next door to the tourist information office, between the Court house and the library. To the side you will find the backdrop of the mountains, with Orihuela's famous monastery. Orihuela has been a centre of habitation since ancient times and has a long history dating back to before the Moors, Christians and Roman times. Many historic buildings, churches, monasteries, convents and town houses of different ages can be discovered here with most of the heritage of the city found in the centre of the city. The Palace's location was declared a Historic Artistic location back in 1969, due to its cultural interest ( BIC ),
so the city will forever retain these wonderful buildings. Even though this area is protected, the law does allow you to renovate the inside of these amazing buildings; two wonderful examples are the Melia hotel and the City's Library which inside has been totally changed. The facade (outside) has to be kept original but the interior is allowed to be renovated to any level. The Palacio Marques De Rafal was constructed in the eighteenth century and has been a home for many families, of whom we can imagine could tell many tales. More recent history tells us that King Juan Carlos and his family, have stayed here on more than one occasion, as they are friends with the Marques family. Just opposite the Palace, under the plaza, is an old war-time bomb shelter, which thankfully was never used. The size of the Palace building itself stands at a wonderful 2,026m2, which is divided on three floors, and sits on a plot size of 1,014m2. To the rear of the building is a large patio Andaluz, which would make a wonderful tea garden

The Palace would make for an incredible private residence or for business. The most recent idea put forward was to keep the top two floors in there majestic glory and use these as high end hotel suites, with the ground floor renovated into restaurants and a cafe. Being in the heart of city centre this would be a great place to offer three new dining experiences: a higher end mesĂłn: middle end restaurant: and a cafĂŠ. Being able to use the plaza in front and the interior garden, this location would make for a fantastic wedding or business venue.

Costa Blanca's Place in the Sun

I have been living on the Costa Blanca now for 17 years and it must be said, 'you do tend to take where you come from for granted'. I've recently been thinking to myself; 'have I been here too long now to move back?' I have lived here during the boom-years and survived through the long winded and difficult recession, all with a family to support. So what conclusion have I come to?
I have just returned from this Autumn's 'A Place In The Sun' exhibition in Birmingham. To say I left there 'buzzing', would be an understatement. It reminded me of why I would never move back to the UK. I left the UK and returned home thinking; 'what a wonderful place I live in'; the Costa Blanca has everything you could want... except maybe a decent McDonald's Chocolate Milkshake‌
I know that I personally, and after speaking to many other exhibitors from different countries, that the Costa Blanca was by far the most asked about location, for people wanting to move abroad. There is no denying it: the word is out that the Costa Blanca has it all. The key points that visitors to the exhibition mentioned were: that the Costa Blanca is an all year around destination: it is easy to get to with regular flights from most UK airports: people can easily drive here from anywhere in Europe: it's affordability, especially compared to the Costa Del Sol, Portugal, Italy or France: our wonderful health system and modern hospitals are better than most: our all year round good weather is renown throughout Europe: our clean beaches and white sands are beautiful: our great selection of shopping malls are busy all year round, and I could list many more reasons people gave us in their desire to want to live here. I even had a visit from two gentlemen who owned a chateau in France. They were interested in moving to a
small town, like Los Montesinos or Rojales. They just wanted a nice affordable villa with a small plot, pool and nearby some local life: shops and amenities; something they and their family could enjoy on a regular basis, offering great value for money and with low maintenance. These are some of the key reasons more and more people are wanting to own a home here. There are things to do all year round. He told me: “it's ok to have a nice beautiful chateau in the rolling countryside but what do we do in the evenings? We want something the whole family can enjoy and we would like to be able to take a trip to a beach.� I spoke to many others that have plans to retire in the next few years and settle here. Bretex did not seem to bother anybody. They all believe, as do I, that our two governments will settle for a very favourable deal between our two countries. I just wanted to bring to you attention what a popular place it is that we live in: this will not waver and will only continue to become more popular as time goes by. It lends me to say the general British public have good taste and have chosen well. The Costa Blanca does have it all and I for one am happy to live here. Viva Costa Blanca. Darren M. Corvette C7.R Edition – limited to 500
When the Z06 rejoined the Corvette lineup in 2015 as the most capable model in the car’s long, storied history, it also joined an elite fraternity of the world’s most capable supercars. It returns for 2016, offering more choices for personalization to complement its world-class levels of performance – including an all-new C7.R Edition. The C7.R Edition pays tribute to the Corvette Racing C7.R racecars. It’s offered in Corvette Racing’s signature yellow livery – or black – with coordinated exterior and interior accents. Only 500 will be built, all with the Z07 Performance Package with carbon ceramic brakes, and a specially serialized vehicle identification number.
Additionally, three all-new colour-coded design packages – Twilight Blue, Spice Red and Jet Black Suede – offer custom-tailored appearances that elevate the Z06’s presence on the street or track, while features such as an available front parking camera and power-cinching latch for the coupe’s hatchback or convertible’s trunk enhance convenience – and add an extra measure protection. New smartphone projection technology on Corvette Z06’s MyLink system displays content from Apple iPhone 5 or later models on the multicolor screen through the Apple CarPlay feature. Supported apps for the system include phone, messages, maps, music and compatible third-party apps. The Corvette Z06’s capability is rooted in its LT4 supercharged 6.2L V-8 engine, which is SAEcertified at 650 horsepower (485 kW) at 6,400 rpm and 650 lb-ft of torque (881 Nm) at 3,600 rpm – making it the most powerful production car ever from General Motors and one of the most powerful production cars available in the United States. With the available Z07 package, its capability enables: 060 mph acceleration in 2.95 seconds with the eight-speed automatic and 3.2 seconds with the seven-speed manual transmission: Quarter-mile times of 10.95 seconds at 127 mph with the eightspeed and 11.2 seconds at 127 mph with the seven-speed transmission and a 60-0 mph braking in only 99.6 feet – the best of any production car tested by General Motors. The Z07 package adds adjustable front and rear aero components for true
aerodynamic downforce, Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup tires for enhanced grip, and Brembo carbon ceramic-matrix brake rotors that improve braking performance and contribute to greater handling through reduced un-sprung weight. New for Corvette Z06 in 2016, Chevrolet’s new MyLink system with an 8-inch-diagonal color touchscreen is compatible with Apple CarPlay, which puts iPhone features (iPhone 5 and later) on the display in a smart, simple manner, allowing drivers to make calls, send and receive messages and listen to music right from the touchscreen or by voice via Siri. That helps drivers spend more time with eyes on the road and hands on the wheel. Using Apple CarPlay is simple. A “Projection” icon on the MyLink screen is visible when a phone is not connected, then changes to indicate CarPlay when a compatible phone is connected via a USB. Compatible apps need to be downloaded to a phone before using and Apple’s privacy statement and terms of use apply. Data plan rates may also apply. While development and testing is not yet complete, Android Auto compatibility may be available later in the 2016 model year. The performance targets of the Z06 also posed a challenge for the design team, which had to create a striking design that also contributed to increased capabilities. The design changes began not with the exterior panels, but the tires.
The seventh-generation Corvette Z06’s aluminum structure is 20 percent stiffer than the previous, fixed-roof Z06. As there are no structural reinforcements needed for the Z06 Convertible, it has a nearly identical curb weight as the Z06 Coupe. They also share the same chassis tuning, powertrain output, driver technologies and equipment options – including the track-focused Z07 Performance Package. Like the structure, there are only minor design changes from the Z06 Coupe to Convertible. The convertible features a fully electronic top that can be lowered remotely using the car’s key fob. The top can also be opened or closed on the go, at speeds of up to 30 mph (50 km/h).
Inside, the Corvette Z06 is distinguished from the Corvette Stingray by unique colour schemes that emphasize the driver-focused cockpit, and a unique, flat-bottomed steering wheel. The Z06 also benefits from interior details designed for highperformance driving, first introduced on the Stingray, including a steel-reinforced grab bar on the center console for the passenger and softtouch materials on the edge of the console, where the driver naturally braces during high-load cornering. The heart of the Corvette Z06 is the all-new LT4 6.2L supercharged V-8 engine, expected to deliver an SAE-certified 650 horsepower (485 kW) and 650 lb-ft of torque (881 Nm). To balance performance and efficiency, the LT4 leverages the same trio of advanced technologies introduced on the Corvette Stingray: direct injection, Active Fuel Management, or cylinder deactivation, and continuously variable valve timing. These technologies – combined with the fuelefficient multi-speed transmissions, aerodynamic design and lightweight construction – help make the new Z06 surprisingly fuel efficient. To maintain the Z06’s mass and performance targets, the LT4 engine was designed with a more-efficient, morecompact supercharger. Even with its integrated supercharger/intercooler assembly mounted in the valley between the cylinder heads, the engine is only about one inch (25 mm) taller than the Corvette Stingray’s LT1 engine – while delivering nearly 37 percent more horsepower and 40 percent more torque

So you can plan agead, WarrantyWise data reveals the real cost of repairs for exotic cars from the likes of Lamborghini, Maserati, Aston Martin and Porsche. WarrantyWise’s biggest pay-out is for £15,000 to a Lamborghini Murcielago owner for major engine repairs – WarrantyWise cover is just £166 per month on average for a Murcielago. A Porsche 911 and Maserati 4200 are the second and third largest pay-outs, of around £10,000 each for engine repairs. Also in the top 10 is a £9,500 gearbox replacement for a Nissan GT-R and £8,057-worth of gearbox repairs on an Aston Martin Vanquish For more sensible warranty cover, WarrantyWise.co.uk offers plans for popular models like the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Golf from just £19 per month. WarrantyWise.co.uk has revealed the true cost of exotic car repairs, with data detailing its largest ever payouts. A Lamborghini Murcielago tops the list, with a major engine mechanical repair bill of £15,000 fully covered by WarrantyWise. By contrast, covering your Murcielago at WarrantyWise’s highest level of service will set you back just £166 per month.

The top ten list and beyond is full of some of the world’s most famous performance cars, with the top three largest payouts covering major engine mechanical repairs. Following the Lamborghini in WarrantyWise’s second and third largest payouts were a Porsche 911 and a Maserati 4200 with bills of around £10,000 each. The average monthly cost of WarrantyWise cover for each of the cars is £82 and £146 respectively.
Lawrence Whittaker, CEO of WarrantyWise, said: “When you lay out all the repair payouts WarrantyWise makes, you can see why so many of our customers swear by our service – especially on an exotic car where the bills are rarely cheap. But the fact that we also have the likes of Renault and Volkswagen in our largest ever payouts just goes to show that all cars have the potential to go very badly wrong – and the resulting repair bill can be large enough to really disrupt your life.”
Gearbox issues can leave owners with a hefty bill, too, with big repair costs of just under £10,000 for Aston Martin’s Vanquish and DB9 models needing major repairs to their automatic gearboxes. Away from the largest repair payouts, WarrantyWise’s data reveal just how expensive relatively minor issues can be in complex, exotic cars. Repairing the ECU in a Ferrari 360, for example, came with a bill of nearly £2,000, with a similar amount required for wheel bearing repairs in a Ferrari 355. An air-conditioning fix in a Maserati GranTurismo resulted in a £1,885 payout from WarrantyWise and replacing the water pump in a GranTurismo Spider commanded a repair payout of £2,278. Even the more run of the mill cars aren’t immune to a crippling bill, though,

Honda Makes Big Gains In Car Dealer Power Survey Honda (UK) has made major advances in satisfaction levels across its dealer network according to the results of a major new survey. The brand made the biggest gains in the influential Car Dealer Power Survey 2016, climbing 20 places and establishing itself as one of the industry’s leading manufacturers,
particularly when it comes to after-sales, new car supply and finance, which Honda scored especially well on. Compiled by Car Dealer Magazine, the survey asks dealers to rate the performance of manufacturers across key business areas such as brand awareness, forward planning, finance offerings and return on investment. The results
show Honda retailers are particularly impressed with the brand’s performance across its after-sales operations, giving it an impressive 90 per cent approval rating. This came just weeks after Hondacare Assistance – the brand’s breakdown and recovery service – was voted the best in the 2016 Which? Breakdown Survey and
awarded Which? Recommended Provider status. Taken together, the two surveys demonstrate the progress being made in Honda’s continued commitment to deliver the very best ownership
experience for its customers. The Car Dealer Power Survey, with its business focus, also underlines the attractiveness of the Honda brand to potential investors keen to join its expanding dealer network.

328 Km/H! – The World’s Fastest Beetle A specially-tuned Volkswagen Beetle has set a new speed record at the World of Speed event that has long been a tradition at Lake Bonneville in Utah (USA). The Beetle LSR (Land Speed Record) with a turbocharged 2.0-litre directinjection engine (TSI) drove the fastest speed ever documented for a Beetle, reaching 328.195 km/h (205.122 mph) over a distance of one mile. In order to reach top speeds of well over 300 km/h many aspects of the Beetle LSR were reworked, and the car was modified to conform to regulations for record drives on salt flats. The output of the 2.0-litre TSI was boosted to a peak power of 550 PS (by changes that included a new turbocharger, different pistons, camshafts, connecting rods and cylinder head modifications). The
record-setting vehicle also stands out with an impressive torque peak of 571 Newton metres. To perform well under extreme conditions, the Beetle was equipped with special wheels and tyres for driving on salt, and the body was lowered significantly. A limited-slip differential was also used to improve traction, while a safety package provided for the necessary protection; it consisted of a rollover protection cage, a race seat with five-point harness and a fire extinguishing system. In addition, the record-setting car had two brake parachutes that were used to slow down the Beetle. The performance was officially recorded at the driving record event sponsored by the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association (USFRA), which is held every year in mid-summer.

Update on driving in Spain
by David Hudson After the Director of Trafico resigned in July, due to various scandals about her husband, it's become time to look at what the DGT has and has not achieved. The former DGT director Maria Segui said: “I go with a clear conscience, head held high and the penalty not being able to do more. I have resigned for personal dignity and commitment to my work. I am not a member of any political or party or have any economic interest in business that manages traffic. I’m just a professional permanently formed to eradicate a social problem (accident)” The resignation comes after the Interior Ministry opened an investigation into whether the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) financed, without public competition, research projects conducted by the husband of Segui, Francisco Lopez Valdes. The functions of the former director will be assumed by the Secretary General of the DGT, Cristóbal Cremades. With her resignation, the backbone has been replaced and now Spain has the opportunity to return to a line of positive action. Deaths on Spanish roads have, since 2014, been reversed. However, from a decade of reductions of the deaths on the roads there have been alarming climb of deaths even though a large number of changes to Traffic laws were past in 2014. Amongst the numbers are a frightening number of cyclists killed or maimed. So this week a new campaign has been launched which has a three pronged attack. The Police will be checking on speeding on secondary roads also checking on drugs and alcohol levels and dangerous braking and acceleration likely to cause an accident. After four years answering question from Expats I decided in 2007 to launch a Drivers' Awareness campaign for English speaking people that I ran for five years. During that time a regular question asked was “is it legal to wear flip flops?”. I always answered that the
Spanish Highway code states that you must wear shoes that fully support your foot because you could loose control of the vehicle. Unfortunately the local Guardia never fully answered the question always leaving a doubt. Last week on National Television a spokesman from the Guardia Civil said that flip flops are illegal and gave the answer that I used. He went onto say that though you may not get stopped, if you are involved in an accident then you risk a fine. So I hope that finally this question is laid to rest. Can I remind drivers that the Spanish Highway code says that you must leave 1.5m when overtaking cyclists. They can also ride in twos and in a group and they have priority over vehicles at unmarked crossings. Cyclists have asked me what traffic rules apply to them. Cycles are classed as a vehicle similar to UK rules and the Spanish Highway code applies to them exactly the same as to vehicles with additional rules regarding priority lanes to cyclists etc. We are used to cyclists in the Torrevieja area doing what they want with riding the wrong way in a one way street, riding on and off the pavement without warning, ignoring the traffic lights and riding at night without lights making my above statement nonsense. We forget that there are three types of Police in Spain and they do not have the same urgency to carrying out the law. In Torrevieja it is monitored by the Guardia Civil but in my area it is run by the National Police and I have never seen a cyclist ignoring traffic light, riding at night without lights or riding the wrong way up a street and never riding on and off the pavements. I have even seen one cyclist with LED lights on the saddle stem in the day time. So some of the blame could be on the policing. But the cyclist should remember that they are vulnerable and with all the information that a driver must quickly deal with it is wise to be noticed with reflective clothing or ankle bands that would catch the eye of a driver. During the Drivers awareness campaign I produced an Information sheet on “Driving safely in Spain” with hints and tips to help Expat drivers in Spain and following the 2014 traffic laws it was obvious that a simple list of differences between UK & Spanish Traffic laws is needed for visitors and non-residents. Both these free information sheets are available from me, via email. My ITV (MOT) Station has given me the heads up that next year Classics and old vehicles may have to change their metal number plates to the current plastic reflective plates possibly because of the new technology being used on the roads. Your ITV Station may only require the rear plate to be changed but may insist that
front and back should be changed. Remember that like the ITV Stations, plate making is controlled and SERCA in Aveneda Cortes Valenciano in Torrevieja can supply both normal and Historic plates. If you belong to a registered classic club you may get a discount. Don't get taken in changing your UK classic onto historic plates because there is little real benefit in doing it and it will cost three times the price of a normal transfer. One benefit is that your vehicle will be tested as when new and retested between three to five years while it is every year for normal plates. But your insurance will be more expensive. You will still have to pay the vehicle tax if the Town Hall you pay to have not opted in to the culture law and waved payment. We can provide details to submit to the Town Hall detailing the law and why and all you have to do is fill in your details. You then take it to the place you pay your tax (Suma or Town Hall). I did this in Torrevieja but at the Tribunal the Council said that they needed the money. It is simple to do so why help yourself and Classics in your Town? Alicante with the change of council are now for the first time in decades charging historic vehicles which leaves Elche, Crevillente, Orihuela including the Costa only not charging tax for historic vehicles. Silent stroke is not so silent
presence of atrial fibrillation, along with peripheral arterial disease screening and abdominal aortic aneurysm testing are safe and accurate. "These screenings can help you and your doctor get a full picture of your vascular health," says Manganaro.
Silent strokes, ones that happen in your brain without you even knowing, can lead to full-blown strokes as well as cognitive impairment and dementia. The most common depiction of a stroke is a person unable to move on one side of their body with slurred speech, but studies show that many stroke victims had silent strokes previously, that, as the name indicates, went unnoticed. The damage caused by the silent stroke, however, can be seen through advanced imaging techniques.
Since no one is suggesting that everyone get an annual brain scan, the next best thing is to understand the risk factors for silent stroke and control those. Two of those risk factors, high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation and blockages in the carotid arteries are simple to screen for and have effective treatments. "The upside to all this is that there are steps one can take to prevent silent stroke," says Dr. Andrew Manganaro, a vascular surgeon and chief medical officer for Life Line Screening. "What it takes is a measure of awareness, routine screening and, if needed, treatment to prevent the blood clots that can lead to this long-term damage to the brain." Silent strokes are 30 to 40 percent more prevalent in women than men and the results can
be serious. Impaired movement, muscle weakness, depression, memory problems and cognitive problems are all associated with silent stroke. "So when atrial fibrillation, high blood pressure or carotid blockage is present in a patient, that should be an indicator to her physician that she's at risk of a silent stroke," Manganaro says. The key to preventing stroke is to get a full picture of your vascular health, so you can begin treatment and monitoring. Manganaro recommends routine screenings for the damaged arteries that indicate vascular problems. Testing for high blood pressure, carotid blockages and the

Control your weight, reduce your consumption of red meat, eat more plant foods and talk to your doctor about starting an exercise program. If you smoke, make it a priority to quit. Smokers have double the risk of stroke than non-smokers, because smoking can lead to excessive blood clotting. If you or your family members have noticed recent changes to your memory facility or mobility, consult with your doctor. In some patients, these have been symptoms of a silent stroke, but in any case it will benefit you to find the root cause and begin treatment. Does silent stroke lurk in your future? The first step in preventing stroke is knowing which conditions can enhance your risk. If you have any of these conditions, talk to your doctor. Do you have a history of high blood pressure? Do you smoke? Do you have an irregular heartbeat? Do you have hypertension?

That Pain In The Back
From time to time all of us has suffered back pain. From simply sitting for too long in the car or an unsupportive seat, through sports injuries, lifting the lightest of objects without bending our knees or simply ignoring all that advice we received in youth to stand up straight and walk with your shoulders back, sooner or later we've probably all companined about having a sore back.
Najeeb Thomas, MD, neurosurgeon at Southern Brain and Spine in New Orleans says: “It’s important to take care of your back before it hurts.” Here, he and Erika Bloom, founder of Erika Bloom Pilates Plus, that has locations in New York City; Greenwich, Conn., to name but a few, offer a few tips to help keep your back painfree. Ideal alignment “keeps the muscles, discs, and nerves healthy,” Bloom says. Faulty posture can create adhesions in the fascia—the web-like covering that connects muscles, bones, and internal organs—and locks in improper movement patterns, she adds. A healthy back has a gentle S-curve, with the low back curving just slightly forward, the upper back curving slightly back, and the neck completing the S with a tiny curve forward. “The spine should feel long and lifted while maintaining these curves,” Bloom says. “Feel your head centred over your pelvis. Imagine your
pelvis reaching down and your head floating up, so there is length between the two.” Deep breathing is also key: Inhale deeply to “fill up your low-back ribs into their natural curve,” Bloom explains. “Feel the breath come in to the armpits and widen the chest and collar bones.” On the exhalation, “engage your deep abdominals to support your lumbar curve,” she says. “Feel your spine and belly button sandwich together.” Thomas says some of his patients get relief by “hanging upside down like a bat,” on an inversion table. He recommends positioning the table between 100 and 180 degrees, and hanging for 4 to 5 minutes at a time, three days a week. “This unloads the spine and distracts [or separates] the discs,” Thomas says, bathing them with blood and nutrients. It also creates space near the foramen, the opening in the spinal column through which nerves travel. This may temporarily ease pressure on nerves and blood vessels, “allowing normal physiology to potentially restore itself,” Thomas says. Choose a table that’s easy to manoeuvre: “You don’t want
to get stuck upside-down.” Cycling also builds stabilizing core muscles, including the gluteal muscles and lower abs. This workout strengthens and lengthens the body, builds core muscles, encourages healthy movement patterns, and “targets the small, intrinsic muscles that support the joints and the spine,” Bloom explains. But the most popular exercise chosen b dancers, models, actresses and the 'beautiful people; is Pilates. She says about when choosing a Pilates instructor, “look for someone educated in teaching the neutral spine,” which indicates knowledge of the latest research, she advises. The teachers should also be certified in a program requiring at least 500 hours, one that includes protocols for injury and back pain. Bloom’s top tip: Stop sitting so much, which can cement poor alignment. “Look up from your computer. Stand up. Walk around. Stretch your arms overhead. Arch your back,” she says. “Take a walk, and breathe deeply as you do.”

Former referee's chief Keith Hackett has criticised the appointment of Manchester-based Anthony Taylor as the man in the middle for Monday's meeting of Manchester United and Liverpool. Taylor lives six miles from Old Trafford, which Hackett believes could lead to allegations of partiality. "No-one is questioning his integrity," Hackett said. "But what if something goes wrong? It would be intolerable." Taylor has no United ties and supports National League North side Altrincham. Aston Villa have named former Hull City and Birmingham City boss Steve Bruce as their new manager. Former Manchester United captain Bruce, 55, who left Hull in July, succeeds Roberto di Matteo, who was sacked on 3 October, at Villa Park. Bruce, who has lived in the Midlands since first joining Birmingham as a player in 1996, takes over with Villa 19th in the Championship table. His first game in charge is at home to local rivals Wolves on Saturday. Former England boss Steve McClaren has been confirmed as Derby County's new manager, just 17 months after he was sacked by the Championship club. McClaren, 55, returns to replace Nigel Pearson, who left by mutual consent on Saturday after less than five
months. Temporary boss Chris Powell will revert to his previous role as assistant manager. be shown on UK television. The first El Clasico of the 2016-17 season, aka Real Madrid vs Barcelona, is being played at 15:15 GMT on Saturday, 3rd December. However, because of British TV's football embargo that was introduced in the 1960's, that prohibits the showing of football on TV during the season between certain hours on a Saturday, the match will not be shown anywhere on UK television not even in the pub. La Liga president Javier Tebas said "We had three windows we had considered, at 13:00, 16:15 and 18:30. We analysed those with our audiovisual team and to play at 18:00 is too late in Asia while to play at 13:00 is too early for the American market." And unsurprisingly, it's all about money. Ed Malyon said in the Mirror, that a longstanding rule agreed between the FA, Premier League and Football League prohibits live football from being broadcast on British television between 2:45 p.m.

Torrevieja Football Blues
With one notable exception, the standard of Torrevieja senior football is in dire straits. Three of Torrevieja's senior teams are all sitting second from bottom of their leagues: the exception to the rule is CF Torrevieja, who play in Regional 1, who are sitting pretty in fourth place and keen to try and make promotion to the Preferente.
CD Torrevieja took a welcome three points on Wednesday evening with an away 2:3 win against lowly BuĂąol. This lifted the team off the bottom and will provide a little more hope among fans and players for this Sunday, when they play the bottom team in their division: Muro C.F. However, things are not all that rosy at the once proud club as his season CD Torrevieja had to abandon their attempt at running a second team in Regional 2, where they would have been a local rival of CD Montesinos, and due to more financial difficulties, many players have left the club. CD Torrevieja now have only 13 players on their books and may have to rely upon using junior players to make up their numbers during the season, unless a 'white knight' can possibly be found in the near future. But with the closure of the Vicente Garcia Stadium and a drop in the number of supporters who are not keen on the configuration of the Nelson Mandela Stadium, any possible buyer of the club will need to have large carrots waved in front of them. The Junior ranks are doing no better. Last season Torrevieja's Under 19 team lost one game in the playoffs to Denia and as a result were the second best Under 19 team in the region. Many of these players moved up to the CF Torrevieja Regional 1 team, along with their manager, where they are doing well and must be looked upon as a possible promotion hopeful. However, the way the Valencian system works is that last year's underperforming 'B' team, have benefitted from the success of last years top performing A team. However, at the moment they look very out of their depth playing at this higher junior level.
This year's Under 19 'B' team have shown some promise and except for a number of dreadful goalkeeping errors, would probably be a mid-table side rather than second from bottom. However, they too have lost a number of players since the start of the season, who have noticed the side's weaknesses and gone to other local clubs to play this season. The second 'however' is that a few of this squad would not look out of place playing three levels above this level for CD Torrevieja, and a few seem destined to make their senior debuts this season.

Looking forward to the 2017-18 season, many of Torrevieja's best 17 year olds will be playing together once again for the Under 19 'A' team, rather than split between two squads, and success might come their way again: but the chances of that happening this season seem a little far fetched. local talent from the region to the club, who would have then fed both CF and CD Torrevieja. An Academy youth team could also have been invited to major tournaments in Spain, playing against La Liga academy teams and raising the profile of city. Torrevieja Town Hall turned down this opportunity as they had signed a deal with Atletico Madrid, which never came to full fruition, but probably seemed a good idea at the time. The directors and management of CD/FC Torrevieja did not show any long term interest in having an academy system, and thus, this season, with the notable exception of CF Torrevieja, the future of CD Torrevieja and the two Under 19 sides, all are in the relegation zone. Local football fans all hope the best for their teams and it must be said that the season's just underway and so there is everything to play for. So why not get out there while the sun is till shinning and cheer on our local football teams. Tomorrow, Sunday 16th there are three very local games for you to enjoy. CF Torrevieja travel up to Algorfa in what promises to be a difficult game, with an 11.30am Kick Off.
