Spain's shrinking population Spain's population continues to fall. Foreigners keep leaving and of those arriving few see the benefits on becoming a resident. The Spanish are marrying just a little later and having smaller families plus with low wages and an inequality in wages being paid between the sexes still evident, more Spaniards are moving abroad. The Four-year downward trend continues, according to latest figures from National Statistics Institute National Spanish newspaper El Pais noted that on January 1st, 2016 there were 99,439 fewer residents in Spain than a year earlier, according to preliminary figures released on Thursday by the National Statistics Institute (INE). The registered resident population of Spain is currently 46.5 million, a 0.2% decrease in the annual rate. Last year, 2015, for the first time since the 1930s, Spain recorded more deaths than births in the first half of the year, according to preliminary INE figures. This trend is expected to continue, and will play an increasingly large role in dwindling population figures. The figures are based on local resident registration, known as the municipal padrón. Councils regularly send in updated figures to the INE for statistical purposes. The latest numbers confirm a downward trend that began in 2012, with the economic crisis in full swing. Foreigners, who represent 9.9% of the registered population, fell by 128,372 individuals. Of these, the main nationalities were Ecuador, Britain and Germany. The INE notes that in 2015, around 123,000 foreign nationals were granted Spanish citizenship. To this downward flow must be added the Spaniards who are moving away in search of better job opportunities. Since 2009, there has been a 56.6% rise in the number of Spanish citizens living abroad, according to INE data released in March. There are 4.6 million registered foreigners living in Spain, of whom nearly 1.8 million are European Union citizens. The largest communities are Romanian, British and Italian. Moroccans make up the largest non-EU group in Spain, followed by the Chinese and the Ecuadorians. Statistics show that the most heavily populated

regions of Spain are Andalusia, Catalonia, Madrid and the Valencia region. At the other end of the spectrum, La Rioja, Cantabria and Navarre continue to be the most sparsely populated areas in the country. There were population declines across all regions over the course of last year, except for Madrid, the Balearic Islands and Catalonia, as well as the exclave cities of Ceuta and Melilla. However, last June records showed that the birth rate in Spain had risen for first time in half a decade with the average maternity age up to 31.8 years in 2014 compared to 31.7 years the year before and life expectancy for Spaniards has increased to a record 83 years. Of the 426,303 births in 2014, 17.8% were from a non-Spanish mother. A total of 426,303 babies were born in Spain in 2014, 588 more than in 2013. The figure marks a rise of 0.1% year-on-year, and is the first increase recorded in the country in five years. That’s according to data just released by Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE) as part of its Natural Population Movement report, which also contains another record figure: average life expectancy for Spaniards has risen to 83 years. In terms of regions, Madrid has the highest life expectancy in Spain, at 84.4 years. In terms of births, the report shows that the number of babies born in Spain has fallen 18% since 2008, a year that saw a 30-year high of 519,779 new-borns. Last year’s slight 0.1% increase was partly due to a rise in the number of children per woman: the figure increased from 1.27 in 2013 to 1.32 in 2014. The number of births per 1,000 inhabitants, however, remained steady at 9.1. Meanwhile, the number of fertile women (those aged between 15 and 49, according to the statistical series) fell from 11.6 million in 2009 to 10.98 million last year, as a result of a decrease in the number of immigrants living in Spain, and the high emigration rate among Spaniards – both factors attributable to the lingering effects of the economic crisis. The INE report also contains a section about marriages in Spain. In 2014, 158,425 couples got married, a 1.3% rise on 2013. The number of marriages per 1,000 inhabitants stood at 3.4 last year, a 0.1% rise on the previous year. The average age

In terms of deaths, the report reveals that 395,045 people died in Spain last year, a 1.2% rise compared to the previous year. That’s 8.5 deaths per 1,000 inhabitants, a 0.2-point increase on 2013. Infant mortality was 2.9 deaths per 1,000 live births, 0.2 points higher than in 2013. Based on these figures, the 2014 rate of natural increase (the crude birth rate minus the crude death rate of a population) fell 11.6% compared to the previous year, with 31,678 people – the lowest figure since 2000. What’s more, there was a negative rate (more deaths than births) in nine regions: Galicia, Castilla y León, Asturias, Aragón, Extremadura, the Basque Country, Cantabria, La Rioja and Castilla-La Mancha. Life expectancy also rose in 2014 compared to the previous year, going up 0.2 years to 83, the highest on record. Average life expectancy for men in Spain is 80.2 (0.2 years higher than in 2013), and 85.7 (0.1 higher) for women. In terms of regions, Madrid has the highest life expectancy in Spain, at 84.4 years, followed by La Rioja (83.9) and Castilla y León (83.7). The lowest figures are to be found in Andalusia (81.9), Ceuta (80.7) and Melilla (80.3).

When fact is stranger than Fiction “Can I take a leg of ham on board the plane?” “Does the embassy have the morning-after pill?” “How do you say enema in Czech?” These are just a few of the genuine queries received on the hotline at the Spanish embassy in Prague, and which have been put together on one of the blogs available on the Foreign Ministry’s website, En la ciudad de las cien torres (or, In the city of one hundred towers). Its author is the consul, Pablo Rupérez, who describes the day-to-day work of a diplomat. And one of the more unusual aspects of the job, as described in this particular post, concerns some of the calls made by people who use the embassy’s emergency number. The queries included: “Can I take a leg of ham on board the plane?” and “How do you say enema in Czech?” “Since reality is often stranger than fiction, we often receive questions that are unexpected, curious, somewhat surreal, or simply too much for us to deal with,” wrote Rupérez in a post that was published in late January but made it on to the main page of Spanish

content aggregator Menéame over the Easter holidays. “I promise they are all authentic,” he writes. First, there are those that focus on more or less practical issues: “Which nightclub does the embassy recommend?” Then, there are those who think they are talking to a customer service department: “I arrived at the hotel and the bedsheets in my room are dirty. What should I do?” “I bought opera tickets and the seats have poor visibility. What do you recommend?” There are also those who never forget their beloved Spain. “What is the area code for General Pardiñas Street in Madrid?”“I’m a Real Madrid fan and I want to go to the Santiago Bernabéu stadium. Can you help me?” Finally, there are the callers who are on a whole different level – possibly an alcohol fuelled one: or who simply want to poke fun at the embassy: “I am a direct descendant of the Spanish King Charles II ‘The Bewitched’; I demand that someone from the embassy come and get me out of the police station. Plus, I live in Fuengirola most of the year.” This call, notes Rupérez, was made by a clearly inebriated individual with a foreign-

sounding accent in the middle of the night. “I’d like two bus tickets, window seats please. For Friday. I know that this is the emergency number, but it was just in case it worked. The bus station is really far from my house, you see.” And as the consul explains in his post, some callers insist on receiving assistance regardless of the irrelevance of their request. Like the passenger with the leg of ham, for instance. Told that the embassy number was for emergencies only, he replied that “ham is an emergency for me.” Still, Rupérez says most of the calls he and his four colleagues receive are to report theft, loss of documentation, medical emergencies and arrests. The España.contigo service was launched in October 2015. Since then, Telefónica and Orange customers receive a free SMS on their cell phone when they travel to a foreign country, and are provided with an embassy number to call in case of need.

Spain buries the names of virgins, José and Jesús In today's Spain, with the power of the increasingly diluted Catholic Church becoming less influential each day, the once strong addition of a adding a virgin's name to a new-born is reaching an all-time low. Today the names of virgins for women, especially Maria, and José (Joseph) and Jesus for men, has seen a major decline. Of the 10 most popular girls names in the 1960s, nine were virgins: Maria del Carmen, Ana Maria, Maria Dolores, Maria del Pilar, Maria Jose, Maria Teresa, Maria Angeles, Maria Isabel and Rosa Maria. These nine names, plus Isabel (Elizabeth), identified 21% of those born. However during the first decade of this century, the only name that significantly remains is Mary or Maria in first place, followed by nine other names without Marian influence: Lucia, Paula, Laura, Marta, Alba, Sara, Andrea, Claudia and Carla. "Shortly before the start of the fertile period [the 1960s], Pope Pius XII issued his encyclical Ad Caeli Reginam (1954), dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Prince’s Marbella estate on sale for €5.25 million

Prince discovered the charms of Marbella in the summer of 1990, during a tour of Spain. Six years later, when he married his first wife, Puerto Rican dancer and singer Mayte García, he bought her a 900-square-meter villa set amid 6,000 square meters of grounds, nestling in the hills overlooking the Mediterranean resort. Prince and García lived in the house for the next six months, but after the death of their one-week-old child, Boy

Gregory, in October 1996, the singer vowed never to set foot in the home again. Within two years he had separated from Garcia, but he held on to the house until 2006, when he sold it to its current proprietor. The property is currently on the market for €5.25 million. “It’s a very special house, with a type of construction that isn’t to everybody’s taste,” says a source at Engel & Völkers, the real estate company that has had the house on is books since 2014. “The

owner is in no hurry to sell it and isn’t prepared to lower the price,” adds the same source. The house is located in the exclusive El Paraíso area to the west of Marbella, and is described by Engel & Völkers as a “palatial villa” set amid lush gardens planted with tropical trees. The property is accessed via a large, colonial-style staircase with white marble balustrades, one of the many “opulent” features of the house, according to the real estate

company’s website. The lower floor is lined with huge windows, and has two master bedrooms. There are three suites on the first floor, along with a private terrace with views down to the sea. There is also a heated outdoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi and tennis courts, marble floors, as well as a security room. And all this, of course, with the added appeal of knowing that this was where Prince and his first wife lived during the high point of the singer’s career.

Torrevieja's May Fair returns this week, and runs from Wednesday May 4th thru Sunday 8th May 2016 in the area of the Fairground. This year's event is organised by Asociación Casa de Andalucia "Rafael Alberti". Visitors to the feria have a choice of 28 different ‘tents’ to pick and choose between for a quick tapa, a cool drink, even a full lunch or dinner. Torrevieja’s Feria de Mayo is five days celebrating a Sevillanas festival of music, dance, entertainment, eating, drinking and merriment, which continues to establish the city as the largest Sevillanas Fiesta on the Costa Blanca. More than half a tonne of Spanish scientists use skin cells to create human sperm ancient Roman coins unearthed

Scientists in Spain said on Wednesday they had created human sperm from skin cells, a medical feat which could eventually lead to a treatment for infertility. The researchers said they were working to find a solution for the roughly 15 per cent of couples worldwide who are unable to have children and whose only option is to use donated sperm or eggs. "What to do when someone who wants to have a child lacks gametes (eggs or sperm)?" asked Carlos Simon, the scientific director of the Valencian Infertility Institute, Spain's first medical institution fully dedicated to assisted reproduction. "This is the problem we want to address: to be able to create gametes in people who do not have them." The result of their research, which was carried out with Standford University in the United States, was published on Tuesday in Scientific Reports, the online journal of Nature. They were inspired by the work of Japan's Shinya Yamanaka and Britain's John Gordon who in 2012 shared a Nobel prize for the discovery that adult cells can be transformed back into embryo-like stem cells. Simon and his team managed to reprogramme mature skin cells by introducing a cocktail of genes needed to

create gametes. Within a month the skin cell was transformed to become a germ cell, which can develop into sperm or an egg, but it did not have the ability to fertilise, they found. "This is a sperm but it needs a further maturation phase to become a gamete. This is just the beginning," Simon said. It is a step further than that reached by Chinese researchers who earlier this year announced they had created mice from artificial sperm. "With the human species we must do much more testing because we are talking about the birth of child," Simon said. The researchers also must take into account legal constraints since the technique involves the creation of artificial embryos which right now is only allowed in some countries. "We are talking about a long process," Simon said.

Construction workers have found 600 kilograms of ancient Roman coins while carrying out routine work on water pipes in southern Spain, local officials say. "It is a unique collection and there are very few similar cases," said Ana Navarro, head of Seville's Archaeology Museum which is looking after the find. Dating back to the late third and early fourth centuries, the bronze coins were found inside 19 Roman amphoras, a type of jar, in the town of Tomares near Seville. Ms Navarro declined to give a precise estimate for the value of the haul, saying only that the coins were worth "certainly several million euros". The coins are stamped with the inscriptions of emperors Maximian and

Constantine, and they appeared not to have been in circulation as they show little evidence of wear and tear. It is thought they were intended to pay the army or civil servants. "The majority were newly minted and some of them probably were bathed in silver, not just bronze," said Ms Navarro. "I could not give you an economic value, because the value they really have is historical and you can't calculate that." Local officials have suspended the work on the water pipes and plan to carry out an archaeological excavation on the site. The Romans conquered the Iberian Peninsula in 218 BC, ruling until the early 5th century when they were ousted by the Visigoths.

“Human faecal contamination” at origin of bottled water health scare The bout of gastroenteritis that left more than 4,000 people sick after they drank bottled water was caused by “human faecal contamination,” according to Catalan health authorities. The norovirus that health officials found in patient samples also showed up in water that had been drawn from Arinsa Spring, in the nearby principality of Andorra. But the Catalan Public Health Agency (ASPCAT) said it was unlikely that the spring water itself was contaminated, and pointed at the bottling plant Aïgues de Andorra as the likely source of the problem. Albert Bosch, the researcher who analysed the samples, said that “it is hard to imagine that there could be faecal waters near the spring.” The Catalan health chief, Joan Guix, said that the only repository for this type of norovirus is the human body, and that the origin of the health scare must have been caused by “human faecal contamination.” Investigators are now trying to determine how the transmission took place, and awaiting a report from

Andorran authorities, who have halted all production lines at the bottling plant until the matter is resolved. This is the first time in recorded history that a virus has been found inside bottled water, said Catalan health authorities. All it takes is a few dozen units of the norovirus to cause an infection; up to 10,000 particles per litre of two kinds of noroviruses were detected in the suspect water. They were the same kind found in the patient samples. “We found positive samples in faeces and in water, which proves that there is a cause-effect relation,” said

Guix. The health chief added that Eden, the company in charge of distributing the water in Catalonia, has been inspected and that no anomalies were found. Guix said that the contamination must have occurred “at the origin, during the process of obtaining or bottling the water, or in the bottle hygienization.” Catalan authorities are not planning any sanctions against Eden, given that the inspection turned up no problems at their facilities. Guix did not rule out the possibility of legal action by individual patients, however. The bout of gastroenteritis has been officially declared over after making 4,136 people sick in Barcelona and Tarragona. The water was distributed to hundreds of companies with water dispensers used by employees. Although symptoms were mild (vomiting, nausea, diarrhoea and abdominal pain), six people were hospitalized and discharged 24 hours later. No new cases have emerged since last weekend.

The Feria will also feature the traditional horses and carriages and Rociera Mass will be sung by the choir of the

Brotherhood of Rocio of Torrevieja on Saturday. Something that has been missing off the local calendar for almost a decade is an International Associations Day. Well, it's back with the return of the This Is Spain's Association and Lifestyle Day. The event takes place on Tuesday May 24th at the Torrevieja Christian Fellowship which is located opposite Dia and beside the new Mino's at: Avda. de las Cortes Valencianas, 68, 03183 Torrevieja, Alicante. The Associations Day is a free exhibition featuring dozens of local clubs, associations, sports, cultural and performance groups plus a few select partners offering advice and

The aim of the celebration is to create peace and harmony between people of different creed and culture and to send out a message a solidarity,

Yecla will be celebrating the Fiesta of San Isidro from the 30th April to the 21st May 2016. The fiesta has been declared as being of Regional Tourist Interest and is particularly well known for the carnival which takes place on Saturday 14th May.

Unemployment up by 11,900 new claims in first quarter

The Spanish economy is growing, but not enough to get the job market off to a good start of the year. The first quarter is historically bad for jobs in Spain, and 2016 has proved no exception, although the early Easter holiday had helped bring down jobless claims in March. There were 11,900 more jobless claims between January and March, according to the Active Population Survey (EPA), which was released on Thursday by the National Statistics Institute. This brings the total number of unemployed in Spain to 4,791,400, for a jobless rate of 21%, Over the last 12

months, the jobless rate has shrunk by 653,200 people. Meanwhile, the economy shed around 64,600 jobs in the first quarter while just over 18 million people remained in employment, representing an activity rate of 59.29%. The lost jobs are all attributable to the private sector, which in fact eliminated 82,100 positions, although this figure was partly offset by a rise in public sector jobs. Broken down into sectors, only industry added jobs, to the tune of 18,000. Services lost 53,400 people, followed by construction with 26,900 and agriculture with 2,300.

Back Stage with Ruby Rox Who are you and what do you do? I am a comedic female and character impersonator. AKA Drag vocalist. I dress up as characters and do some so I am told some really accurate vocal impersonations of some of my favourite ladies whilst not taking myself too seriously and having fun with the audience. I am also an experienced none gender bending personality vocalist and occasional Sam Smith Tribute act. How did you start in the business? I did some drag compering in Gran Canaria about 12 years ago and then joined a comedy costume change show about 8 years ago. I then worked the clubs in Northern England as a personality vocalist before joining a very successful production show in Benidorm as Ruby Rox in summer 2014. After doing that for over a year I have been performing as a solo show in a variety of venues in and out of the resort.

What would you be doing if you were not an entertainer? When i worked in the UK as an entertainer this was on weekends. During the week i was a Trainee Tutor for deaf people with additional needs. I would probably be still doing that. As an entertainer who has been your biggest influence? I have many influences I am currently very much in love with Bette Midler I like the humour, dramatics vocal mix! Do you ever get nervous or have you suffered stage fright? Always. I think nerves help you put more adrenalin into your performance. What was your best moment? I just had it. I performed recently at a special

Valentine's event and the audience and i seemed to have a love affair through the whole thing they were simply gorgeous. I was performing after the Ruby half of the show as myself and i did Unchained Melody and it seemed like every single person got up to slow dance and sing it was a wonderful moment and superb climax to the show. Main stage at Benidorm Pride was a big moment for me last year too! What has been your worst moment? Before I joined the band 8 years ago i tried to put something together and did a big showcase and got devoured by nerves messed up my make-up and got a horrendous write up in The Stage newspaper. The same guy give me a great write up once I was in the band and I often look back at this moment as a marker to show how far I have come. What’s the best piece of advice you have received or would give someone starting out in the business? Always do your Best. Don't take anything personally. Any little anecdotes or interesting stories? I have appeared in recent weeks on Channel 5 programme Bargain Loving Brits In the Sun. The opportunity arose to buy a wellestablished business along with my brother-in-law so we went for it. 2 years

ago he wanted to move on so I continued alone. Now it is me plus my loyal staff Catherine, Donall and Rain. Where did the inspiration for the name come from? Well I may be ‘auld’ but I’m not from Dublin. However the bar was already long-established and was well-known by that name so I saw no reason to change it. Who does the cooking? And how would you describe your style? At this time (winter) we are just doing sandwiches and snacks. However we are looking to do breakfasts and lunches in the summer. We had a part-time chef with us last summer and we’re hoping

he’ll come back to us this year. What’s your favourite dish on the menu? Going back to last summer our chef did a lovely steak pie with chips. It was basic but really tasty. Favourite day of the week? At this time of year definitely Saturday as there is so much going on. We show sports during the afternoon, including premier league football then in the evening we have karaoke with our resident host Sammy Starr. Always good fun. There are a couple of things I should add. One is that one of our staff members, Rain O’Connor, is a brilliant singer and entertainer in her own right and regularly hosts karaoke and entertainment nights here in the summertime. Leading on from that we step up the entertainment considerably during the summer months providing live entertainment or karaoke 7 nights a week in high season. This year we hope to include musical theme nights once a month or so; such as country nights, songs from films and musicals etc. Any interesting tales? Well despite the fact that we are very

popular with holidaymakers during the summer we are first and foremost a community bar catering for the residents in our area. We are used to some of our regulars having loads to drink (always behaving themselves I must add) and then stumbling out having forgotten to pay their bar bill. We never worry because we always know they’ll be back anxiously asking if they’ve forgotten to pay. The amusing thing is that sometimes they come back in the next day apologizing for forgetting to settle up and then hearing us tell them that it was ok as they actually HAD paid the night before. One of our summer residents comes in every day for breakfast. “Breakfast” consists, without fail, of a Smirnoff Ice followed by 2 Sambuca’s. Amazing thing is he never seems to get drunk!

Healthy Eating Habits: Six is for Successful Eating You'd think that after years of eating, you would have learned a thing or two about munching down on food by now. However, there is one myth that still clouds many a dining room. I'm talking about the one that says you should only eat three times a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner and not eat in between. If you're in the habit of eating only three times per day and think that you are eating for optimum health, you'd be absolutely WRONG! Eating only three times a day is anything but the right way to go about feeding your body, and you'll actually be surprised at how complex eating really is. The human body is a magnificent piece of biological machinery that relies on food for fuel in order to keep it going. So, as I'm sure you already know, food is needed for energy. Throughout the day your body uses this energy for daily functioning and to help it perform during exercise and activities. However, unlike a car, you cannot fill your body with fuel (food) until the "tank" is completely full. You need to give it a constant, steady supply of nutrients throughout the day. So instead of three 'square' meals per day, break those down into six smaller sized portions and eat every two to three hours. Now before you get carried away, don't think that this is your ticket to food freedom where you can chomp down on all the burgers, cookies and fried, fatty foods you want. Eating unhealthy, fatty food will not benefit you in any way, no

matter which way you look at it. When I say eat six times a day, I certainly don't mean eating all the junk food you can possibly shove into your mouth. I'm talking about feeding your body with lean proteins such as chicken, fish, lean beef, as well as wholesome, unprocessed, natural carbohydrates such as your fruit and veggies, sweet potatoes and brown/whole wheat rice, as well as a little fat. You can use the formula below to determine exactly how to split up your plate and get in all the nutrients your body needs for optimal functioning. When you eat a big meal and don't burn it off, your body ends up with an excess of food and more "fuel" than it needs. During this time, your body sends a signal to the brain, telling it that more insulin is needed. Insulin helps to regulate your blood sugar levels and an overproduction of insulin leads to feelings of lethargy (hence the reason you feel tired after a big Sunday lunch), but on a

more serious note, an overproduction of insulin can also lead to weight gain and possibly even diabetes. These excess calories that you shoved into your mouth do not get burned up because you're parking off on the couch watching football, so your body now stores these excess calories for later use. This in return means that your body is storing fat and you are ultimately gaining weight. The trick to keeping your body and energy levels sustained and keeping the weight loss at bay is taking your three square meals (remember breakfast, lunch and dinner) and breaking them down into smaller portions of six. So, at the end of the day you are getting in the same amount of food, just at a slower, steadier pace which will benefit your body, boost your metabolism and stop the cycle of uncontrollable weight gain. Eating healthy and for optimal nutrition is not something that will happen overnight. Remember, for many years you've been feeding your body a certain way and have developed a habit of eating that way. Although habits are hard to break, with discipline and consistency you can change the way you eat and never have to worry about dieting again. Make healthy eating part of your everyday life. Go to a bookshop and stock up on healthy food recipes. You'll be surprised at how many healthy meals you can cook up that are just as satisfying as eating out at your favourite takeout joint. Another important factor to remember is not to skip out on meals either. Just because you

are eating less, doesn't mean your body doesn't need those nutrients. Make mealtimes a priority and plan your meals in advance. Set reminders on your cell phone, in your diary or on your PC and make sure you eat when it's time to eat. Prepare your meals in advance and if you just "can't make that much food," try finding a meal replacement shake that is balanced in lean protein, carbohydrates and has a small amount of unsaturated fat. There is also a wide range of nutritious bars that can help make life a little easier. Just remember: bars can also contain loads of sugar, which is not ideal in your path to weight loss success. Eating regularly and sustaining your blood sugar levels will make you feel better, not only because your body is

now being fuelled instead of just fed, but you will look better, have more energy and enjoy life. You probably won't have to go on diet to shape up for summer and look and feel your best all year round. Now doesn't that sound more tempting than any junk food on the planet? Use this formula to help you determine your ideal portion sized meals: 1. Before we start, it is a good idea to determine your portion size. Each person has his/her own unique portion size, based on his/her body. In order to determine yours, simply clench your fist or use the palm of you hand (without fingers) as a guide. That is your unique portion â&#x20AC;&#x201D; compare it to foods and you're on your way to successful eating. 2. Next, you will need to divide your plate up into four sections. i. Take one half and fill it with lean protein such as skinless, boneless chicken breast, lean mince, skinless hake, salmon, or turkey breast. ii. Fill the next quarter with plain vegetables (i.e. without cream or dressing) and go for options such as steamed broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, green beans or a mixed salad with lettuce, cucumber and tomato. iii. Next, fill just less than one quarter with low glycemic, wholesome carbohydrates such as brown or basmati rice, sweet potato or whole wheat bread. iv. The remaining bit can be used for your unsaturated fats such as olive oil, canola oil, sunflower oil, olives or almonds etc.

Spain has more multimillionaires than ever In the aftermath of a crippling economic crisis that sent unemployment in Spain soaring to over 27%, it has emerged that the country now has more multimillionaires than ever before. But it is hard to determine whether this is mostly due to the uneven impact of the crisis, or to the 2012 tax amnesty that encouraged many wealthy individuals to declare their previously concealed fortunes. New figures released on Tuesday by the Tax Agency show that 471 individuals declared assets of over €30 million in 2013, more than twice as many as were on record in 2007, right before the economic downturn. The 2012 tax amnesty shed light on approximately €40 billion that the state had been unaware of. There is an additional consideration when analyzing the Tax Agency figures: they only reflect the wealth that is being lawfully declared. Taking fraud, tax avoidance and non-taxable assets into account, the real number of multimillionaire Spaniards could be even higher. Earlier reports by Eurostat and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) had already established that the crisis has significantly widened the gap between rich and poor in Spain. This inequality rose on a par with the rise in joblessness and the number of

families at risk of poverty or social exclusion. In 2012, the Popular Party (PP) government offered a tax amnesty that allowed individuals to start declaring previously concealed fortunes in exchange for low fines and very few explanations. The initiative shed light on approximately €40 billion that the state had been unaware of. There was also a record number of taxpayers declaring between €6 million and €30 million (5,469 people) and those declaring between €1.5 million and €6 million (48,742). But these figures only reflect individuals’ taxable income after deducting debt and non-taxable assets, such as part of the value of their primary residence as well as many other deductible items. Madrid residents top the list of wealthy taxpayers with an average fortune of €8.17 million, compared with the national average of €3.01 million (this figure does not include Navarre and the Basque Country, whose residents do not directly pay taxes to the state, but to their regional governments instead). The second position is claimed by Galicia with €4.1 million. This might be influenced by the fact that Galicia is home to Amancio Ortega, founder of the Zara clothing empire and the richest man in Spain (although many of his assets are, in fact, non-taxable).

Prawn bruschetta with lemony fennel salad Ingredients • 1 fennel bulb, thinly sliced through the root, green fronds reserved • 1 heaped tbsp roughly chopped dill • zest and juice ½ lemon, plus wedges, to serve • 1 tbsp olive oil • 4 small slices rustic wholemeal bread, or two large cut in half • 1 garlic clove, halved • 140g cooked prawns • handful rocket Method 1. Bring a pan of water to the boil then add the fennel slices for 2-3 mins until just tender. Drain well and toss with reserved fennel fronds, dill, lemon zest and juice, 2 tsp olive oil and seasoning. 2. Brush the slices of bread with remaining oil. Place in a hot griddle pan (or under a grill) and

toast on both sides until lightly charred. Rub one side of each slice with the garlic, then divide the fennel salad between them. Top with the prawns, then the rocket and serve.

Renault Koleos revealed Renault has unveiled its new Koleos SUV at the Beijing motor show, ahead of it going on sale in Europe early in 2017 The French company claims that the Koleos has real all-terrain ability thanks to a high ground clearance and “unparalleled” four-wheel drive technology, as well as class-leading cabin space. It is based on the Common Module Family (CMF-CD) modular platform developed jointly by Renault and Nissan and already used on similar vehicles as the third-generation Nissan X-Trail and Renault Kadjar. When it goes on sale in the UK in early 2017, it will rival cars such as the Kia Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe and Nissan XTrail. Renault has given the Koleos all the requisite styling cues, such as protective mouldings on the doors and alloy roof bars, along with large wheels and 213mm of ground clearance. It won’t trouble a Land Rover off the beaten track, but an approach angle of 19 degrees and a departure angle of 26 degrees hint at serious off-road ability. Compared with a traditional saloon, the Koleos has a seating position that’s 150mm higher, giving the lofty feeling beloved of SUV buyers. Hand grips either side of the centre console echo the world

of off-road motoring while imbuing the interior with a sporty feel. The interior features a continuous line from the top of the dashboard to the rear of the armrest, which is supposed to suggest power and the world of all-wheel drive motoring. The wide centre console ensures there is a comfortable distance between the driver and front passenger, while rear passenger room is also claimed to be the best in class. Engines are two petrol and two diesels developing from 128 to 172bhp, with either a six-speed manual gearbox or X-

Tronic CVT transmission. The all-wheel drive system is easy to use, the driver activating a switch on the dashboard to select front- or four-wheel drive. A 4WD Auto mode automatically splits the torque between the front and rear wheels. At slow speeds in low-grip conditions, a third mode called 4WD LOCK allows the driver to select permanent all-wheel drive. A front-wheel-drive-only version will be available in some markets. Externally, the Koleos is set apart from the opposition by a number of chrome embellishments, including strips that run from the headlights along the full length of the wings. It also has one of the longest wheelbases in the class, with an unusually short front overhang. Renault also says that the interior features quality, tactile materials and trim such as satin-finish chrome on the steering wheel, gear lever and air vents, along with a boot that has 624 litres of luggage space with the 60/40 split rear seat in place. A powered tailgate permits hands-free opening by simply waving a foot beneath the bumper. Expect the usual battery of

connectivity. The Koleos has Renault’s RLINK 2 system, which controls functions such as infotainment, navigation, handsfree calls, radio and driver aids. A choice of screens (7-inch landscape or 8.7-inch portrait) operate on the same two-finger principle as most smartphones. Depending on the market, there's an array of driver aids, all of which can be controlled via the R-LINK 2 tablet. These include emergency braking and warnings for tiredness, lane departure, blind spot and distance to the vehicle ahead, as well as traffic sign recognition with excess speed warning. Assistance features include a rear view camera, all-round parking sensors and Easy Park Assist. The new Koleos will be assembled at Busan in South Korea for all markets except China, plus Wuhan for the Chinese market. The Koleos will be Renault’s top-ofthe-range model in many of its markets outside of Europe. Laurens van den Acker, senior vicepresident of corporate design at Renault, said: “The new Koleos completes the styling renaissance of the Renault range that began with the new Clio in 2012. As a designer, the challenge was to imagine an SUV that was not only elegant, but also modern and dynamic. To achieve this, we didn’t seek to dilute the traits that are traditionally associated with SUVs. Instead, we accentuated the segment’s familiar cues thanks to taut, powerful, horizontal lines, muscular haunches and high ground clearance. “As a result, the Koleos exudes an inner strength. It is every inch an SUV and every inch a Renault.” This is the second Renault to wear the Koleos badge. The first, also an SUV/crossover, was popular in India and the Far east but failed to make headway in the UK and was quietly dropped in 2010.

New Ford 'Ecoboost' diesel engine launched Ford has revealed a new 2.0-litre ‘EcoBlue’ diesel engine, which will replace the current 2.2-litre TDCi unit. The EcoBlue is aimed to pre-empt Euro 6 regulations which will come into effect into September. Following the introduction of the 2.0litre engine, a 1.5-litre version will be introduced, which will likely feature on lower-powered Fords, such as smallerengined Mondeo models, the Focus, CMax, B-Max and Fiesta. The engine comes in six different states of tune; 98, 104, 128 and 168bhp, as well as a 197bhp-plus and 237bhp which will likely appear in performancefocused models such as the diesel variant of the Focus ST. Ford also claims that 20% more torque is available from as low as 1250rpm over the 2.2-litre TDCi powerplant the EcoBlue replaces.

Ford claims the new engine weighs 10-15kg less than the TDCi engine. These developments also allow the EcoBlue motor to take up less space. Transit vans will be the first to get the new EcoBlue engine, before it makes its way into the larger cars in Ford’s range, such as the Mondeo, S-Max and Galaxy, as well as potentially the upcoming Edge, and commercially-oriented Ranger and Tourneo models. In the Transit, Ford claims to have improved emissions by more than 10% with the new engine, as well as improving fuel economy by 13%. The brand claims that the turbocharged EcoBlue engines, which were developed in the UK and Germany, will be an ‘unrivalled package of fuel efficiency, performance and refinement’.

Why you might need to pass a new autonomous driving test Autonomous cars and their drivers should be required to pass a new-style driving test before being allowed on the roads, according to an influential EU think-tank. The new test is likely to be radically different to the one that British drivers are currently required to pass and is aimed at preparing them for the task of relinquishing and wresting back control of a vehicle which is capable of driving itself. The recommendations are contained in a report published yesterday by the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) and come at the same time as

Volvo, the Swedish car maker, announced plans to start trailing its autonomous technology in London from next year. Both moves have been taken by experts as a sign that autonomous car technology is accelerating faster than previously thought. The ETSC report, entitled "Prioritising the Safety Potential of Automated Driving in Europe", is aimed at policymakers within the EU and addresses some of the key reservations about autonomous driving including the question of liability in the event of a crash. However, it is the prospect of

member states being required to redraft their driving test rules that may be the most farreaching proposal. The report states that Brussels should: "Consider revising the Driving Licence Directive to include driver assistance systems with regular updates as the technology develops. Adapt driver training, including the development of a curriculum, so that drivers can gain a working knowledge of when and how to use automation features and understand the basics, advantages and limits of the technology." It also recommends that

driverless cars themselves be put through a newly drafted driving test. "Revise type approval standards to cover all the new safety functions of automated vehicles, to the extent that an automated vehicle will pass a comprehensive equivalent to a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;driving testâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. This should take into account high risk scenarios for occupants and road users outside the vehicle." No mention was made of executing a three point turn, reversing around a corner or reading a number-plate from 100-yards. The report will be studied with interest by car makers experimenting with driverless car technology. Volvo became the latest large manufacturer to confirm that it will have autonomous cars on the road by

next year, when it announced details of a UK-based test called "Drive Me London". The trial will take place in the capital from next year and use real families driving autonomous cars on public roads. It is set to expand in 2018 to include up to 100 autonomous cars, making it the largest and most extensive AD testing programme on Britainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s streets. Volvo says the aim of the trial is to use the data gathered by everyday users to help build autonomous cars that are suitable for real-world driving conditions. It is unclear whether the families selected to take part in the trial will be given any specific training, or be required to pass a test before taking part.

After the fairly boing goalless draw between Real Madrid and Manchester City, Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane said that he expects another magical night in Madrid when Manchester City visit the Spanish capital. He made a call to the fans to get behind his team for the second leg of their semi-final Champions League encounter. “I’ve got no doubt that it's going to be a spectacular night for the players because the fans are going to help them through it," said Zidane. He added: "It's going to be a great day for the fans and I know they've been fantastic for us, for every player, and I think they'll keep it up. We're one step from the final and we're going to need them, as we always do.” Furthermore, the Frenchman recognises that the only way to progress to the final is via a victory in the second leg. “We know what we have to do and that is that we simply have to win," Zidane said. “We drew in the first leg and to win it in the second leg we have to score.” In terms of his short time in charge of the club so far, he says he has revelled in his new position as head coach. Things weren't made any easier for the away side as Michael Krohn-Dehli went down in a heap after what looked like a simple challenge from Facundo Ferreyra. However his knee buckled, forcing him off. An equaliser did eventually come, as Ferreyra gave away a penalty for a late tackle on Vitolo.
