The City of Lethbridge (Sikóóhkotok) is located in the Territory of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksikaitsitapi). Lethbridge is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta Region 3. Recreation & Culture Guide Coordinated by the City of Lethbridge, Recreation & Culture Department Printed in Canada

Welcome to the April 2022 Recreation & Culture Guide A Message from Mayor Blaine Hyggen Welcome to springtime in Lethbridge! Although there are many amazing winter activities, I believe everyone is looking forward to better weather into this new season. I am excited for our residents to participate in their favourite activities – or to find new ones. This Recreation and Culture Guide is the perfect destination to find out what is available in City of Lethbridge facilities. The Guide will help you explore information on events, programs, clubs, leagues, teams and classes that will be taking place in April and beyond. I am looking forward to further discovering what our facilities and maybe I will even find a new sport or hobby! I find physical activity invaluable for positive mental health and am excited to see what new opportunities may be ahead. I also am excited to find some new ideas for ‘Mayor’s Challenge’ initiatives this year. Stay tuned! Be healthy and be happy. Mayor Blaine Hyggen

Changes coming to Water Safety Courses

Aquatics

The Red Cross has decided to turn down their involvement in water safety throughout 2022. By January 2023 there will no longer be Red Cross Water Safety Instructor courses or lessons. Standard First Aid will continue. The Lifesaving Society is taking over that responsibility. We are working with them to program our new Swim for Life Instructor courses and lessons. We're excited for this new chapter and look forward to working with everyone!

Chocolate Bar Protest of 1947 Prior to the Second World War, chocolate bars in Canada cost 5cents. During the war, the Canadian Government imposed a one-cent war tax on chocolate bars and children expected that after the war, the price would return to the pre-war level. However, in the spring of 1947, when subsidies were no longer paid to candy companies and the price ceiling was removed, the cost of chocolate bars was raised to 8-cents. Teen-agers on Vancouver Island suggested a boycott and pickets against the increased chocolate bar. These events galvanized other kids and teenagers across Canada who followed suit. Chocolate bar boycotts and strikes spread across the country, including here in Lethbridge.

The police diverted drivers down side streets and adults gathered along the street to watch. The group carried bright banners and chanted slogans. A second protest parade was held the following Saturday in downtown Lethbridge. Canadian kids did not win this fight. It wasn’t long before adults were putting an end to the protests and boycotts, using the excuse that Communists were behind the protests. Cross-country protests planned for 3 May 1947 were quelled.

During lunch hour on May 1, 1947, students from Westminster School led a protest parade down 13th Street North (shown in the photograph).

Alberta's Endangered Flora Did You Know?

① Western Spiderwort (Tradescantia occidentalis) is the only member of its family native to Western Canada. It is a federally protected species. The broken stems secrete a sticky substance, which forms cobweb-like strands when hardened, giving the plant its common name.

② Soapweed (Yucca glauca) is a long-lived perennial plant, in the Agave Family. It got its name because its roots contain a high concentration of lathering substances called saponins. When crushed and mixed in water, the

saponins produce a lather that can be used as a soap or a shampoo. At the northern extent of its range, it naturally occurs in two locations in the southeast corner of Alberta in the Milk River basin. ③ The Tiny Cryptanthe (Cryptantha minima), also known as little cat's-eye, is an annual vascular plant species found in semi-arid grasslands. Its identified range in Alberta is in the dry mixedgrass natural subregion. Cryptantha minima is threatened primarily by habitat alteration, such as cultivation, and urban development.

Active Living for April Get into the Active Transportation Habit this Spring! The weather is warmer, the daylight lasts longer, the paths are clear of ice and snow... it's time to get in the active transportation habit again! Pull out your bike - check the chain, brakes, handlebars and seat height, and locate your helmet too. Our city has some great path systems that can get you around the city efficiently. Build in walk time - Do you have time to walk to work? Or how about encouraging your kids to walk to and from school? Often walking doesn't add as much time in as we think, and it's an easy way to boost physical and mental health. Kids might enjoy scootering to and from school too! Challenge yourself to leave your car at home this spring. Active transportation is a WIN all around - for our personal health, the environment and our wallet too.

Fundamental Movement Skills and how they develop through play an excerpt of an post originally published on lethbridgeplays.ca by Shawn Daye-Finley When you hear the term literacy, do you think of the ability to read and write? The word ‘literacy’ can also describe other skills. The Australia Sports Commission defines physical literacy as building the skills, knowledge and behaviors that give us the confidence and motivation to lead active lives. Being physically literate is a fluid concept. You may have heard the term “fundamental movement skills” (FMS). FMS are basic movements associated with physical activity. Your knowledge of them is a measure of your physical competencies. The most common fundamental movement skills include balance, running, jumping, throwing, catching, skipping, and hopping. Fundamental movement skills can be combined into progressions. This results in complex movements like swimming. Almost every skill seen in sports links back to one or more FMS.

There are many debatable movements listed as fundamental. Though swimming is on Through play, children gain physical abilities that start a domino effect. Play develops confidence in movement, motivation to stay active, and understanding of the value of physical activity. Simply, children who play grow up happier and healthier.

Apollo Fox Hess (Mootooyaohkii) is a Blackfoot athlete from the Blood reserve just outside of Lethbridge. Growing up, Hess participated in a plethora of sports including track and field, hockey, and soccer. As Apollo got older, the sport of swimming is what he excelled in. His competitive fire and urge to succeed combined to create a force in the pool. His steady progress has brought him quite a long way. In 2016, he failed to even qualify for the national championships as a 14year-old. At only 18 years of age, Hess finished 4th at the 2020 Canadian Olympic Swimming Trials. Apollo was named the Canada West Rookie of The Year, as well as the Canada West Swimmer of the year in his first official season as a varsity athlete. His development and maturation in sport is in large part due to his long-time coach, Peter Schori. Apollo grew up in Lethbridge but was raised as a proud Blackfoot person. He has a very strong sense of heritage and culture. His Blackfoot name is Mootooyaohkii (Ocean). It was given to him by his late grandfather, Norbert Fox, who was also a star athlete in his youth. It’s safe to say the future is bright for the young athlete, as he’s proven time and time again that he’s ready for the big stage.
