Our Betrayed Wards This book was written by R.N. Wilson, The book was signed by 200 men from former Indian Agent of the Blood the reserves who gave their support to Reserve. Wilson bringing forward their concerns. Wilson highlighted how deliberate work was done to destroy farming and ranching on the reserve to the benefit of everyone but the Indigenous people. Sabotage of the ranching industry was done because the ration system was profitable for local ranchers who didn’t want to lose the income. Similar difficulties were placed in front of those who tried to develop farms on the reserve. All of this resulted in decades of economic decline and deliberately caused destitution on the reserve. It was noted that in 1894 the Kainai and Piikani were on their way to becoming great ranchers, while in 1916, 65,150 bushels of wheat and 26.980 bushels of oats, as well as hay and other crops, were produced on the Blood Reserve. Future success, though, was deliberately blocked and Blood reserve members who resisted were black-listed and systematically persecuted.

Bighorn Sheep & Prickly Wild Rose Two Emblems of Alberta Mammal of Alberta: Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis). In 1989, the Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep was designated the official mammal of Alberta. It is native to Alberta and is the largest wild sheep in North America. A large ram can weigh over 300 pounds and stand over 42 inches tall at the shoulder. They are generally a dark brown to gray/brown colour with a white rump patch, muzzle and back of legs. Rams' horns are massive and tightly curled close to the face. A ewe has small shorter horns that curve only slightly, and ewes usually weigh 125-150 lbs.

Floral Emblem: Prickly rose (Rosa acicularis). The wild rose was designated the floral emblem of Alberta in 1930. Alberta’s provincial flower is a tough and adaptable shrub. It thrives in sites ranging from dry grassy hill slopes to moist forest understories. Its flowers have excellent pollen and nectar resources, and its hips provide a long-lasting food source for birds throughout the winter. Its petals and hips (high in vitamin C) can be used to make tea, jellies, jams, vinegars, syrups, or eaten fresh.

BE FIT FOR LIFE Stay Hydrated! Make Hydration a Priority in this Extra-Hot Summer! Over half of your body is water! Your brain, lungs, heart, muscles, skin and even bones have a large water component so things just won't work well and you won't feel well when you get dehydrated. Try to keep water handy so it's easy to drink regularly all day and don't wait until you feel thirsty. Water is the drink of choice - target 6-8 glasses per day and consider more if you are active. Make it tastier with a wedge of lemon, lime or orange, a few berries, a splash of juice, some melon or cucumber. Add a few mint leaves or mix in some sparkling water if you like a little fizz. Try freezing berries into ice cubes. Sports drinks are suitable if your activity level is higher than average and lasting over an hour. Try to limit caffeinated drinks and be mindful that some drinks come with extra calories and sugar. If you feel hungry, try to drink a glass of water before reaching for a snack as thirst is often confused with hunger. Enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables as most are high in water.

Did You Know?

Take advantage of the season, enjoy the summer sunshine and heat but keep your safety and wellness in mind: wear sunscreen, a hat, light, loose clothing and select cooler times of the day or shadier areas to be active in. And don't forget to bring water along!

Thank you to all of our sponsors that were on board to support the 2021 Canada Day Celebrations in Henderson Lake Park and Galt Gardens. Due to COVID-19 we were unable to go forward with the event, however we wanted to take a moment to recognize how amazing all these sponsors are for their willingness to support our community. Without fabulous sponsors like these we wouldn't be able to host the Canda Day Festival each year!

KEY BENEFITS OF PARKS AND OPEN SPACE IN LETHBRIDGE

“Parks connect us”

Park users note that parks were a socially important place and that their activities were enriched by the presence of others (e.g. friends, families and strangers). The presence of these social conditions was identified as a key factor that increased motivation and usage of parks. The social benefits of urban park spaces has led urban and municipal planners to focus on ensuring adequate parks and open spaces are available to residents. For references and more information please visit: https://www.lethbridge.ca/parkbenefits

Did You Know?

Public park spaces provide residents with important and valued spaces to meet neighbours and participate in many social activities. Parks also foster social inclusion in a community. Social inclusion involves the basic notions of belonging, acceptance and recognition. Parks contribute to social inclusion by providing spaces that all segments of the population can enjoy for activities, events or casual use.
