ABOUT THE POOLS - NEW CHANGES COMING

This fall our Recreation Excellence leadership team conducted a facility analysis of the schedules, programs, and services, including registration, attendance, and drop-ins.

The Stan Siwik Family Leisure Pool, Nicholas Sheran Family Leisure Pool, Fritz Sick Pool, and Hen-derson Outdoor Pool are community treasures that serve the people of Lethbridge and Southern Alberta.

Efficient facility schedules maximize opportunities that reflect the current usage and user trends. The facility attendance for public swimming has decreased significantly since the pandemic started and has not returned to pre-pandemic levels and the data also identified an imbalance of programming across City quadrants. The proposed changes were approved by the City of Lethbridge and will be effective January 2, 2023. The new schedule provides efficiencies for pool operations and staffing while providing an equal distribution of programming across the City of Lethbridge quadrants.

Key highlights of the new schedules include:

•10 additional weekly aquafit classes, featuring a new class on Saturdays.

•A new Friday Youth swim from 2-5 pm.

•2 new Adult Leisure swims on Fridays and Saturdays.

•8 New Parent & Tot and Preschool Lessons on Friday mornings .

•Expanded Learn to Swim program with an additional 48 lesson spots for children.

•More Rental space opportunities for private bookings.

•Programs with lower attendance are shifting to new times or to another Recreation Excellence facility.

Why is the schedule changing?

The facility attendance for public swimming has decreased significantly since the pandemic started and has not returned to pre-pandemic levels. As an essential part of the fiscal mandate, we strive to achieve an efficient facility schedule that maximizes usage and creates fiscally responsible recreation facilities.

Why is my class time changed?

Your class may have been moved to another facility to maximize facility usage, pool space, staffing hours, and other operational needs. We certainly understand that changes to your regular class time can be difficult to comprehend, and with 10 new classes opening, we encourage you to try one of the other available offerings.

Will it ever go back?

We don’t know. Recreation Excellence will continue to monitor and analyze the usage of the facili-ties along with attendance and user trends. Future schedules may be adjusted to meet the needs of the greater community while ensuring fiscally responsible recreation facilities.

Stafford Drive Named, 1963

Sixty years ago, in 1963, 9 Street North was renamed Stafford Drive. Seventeen years later, the name was extended when in 1980, 9 Street South to 6 Avenue South was named Stafford Drive South.

So, who was Stafford Drive named after?

The road was named after William Stafford, first manager of the Galt coal mines.

In addition to his work as the manager and superintendent of the Galt mines, Stafford started a ranch where Peenaquiim Park/Softball Valley is located today. The brand used on the ranch was a miner’s pit lamp.

In 1893, Stafford resigned as Mines Superintendent, planning to devote more time to his ranch. However, the next year, in 1894, he accepted the appointment as Inspector of Mines in the Territories, a job he kept until 1897. Stafford also served on the first school board in Lethbridge.

William Staffor d passed away in 1907.

Unique: The Mourning Cloak Butterfly

Lifecycle

Did You Know?

Mourning Cloak ( Nymphalis antiopa), refers to its resemblance to a traditional cloak worn when one was "in mourning".

They sometimes live as long as twelve months as adults. In springtime, they typically emerge from hibernation before the first flowers are blooming, and they feed on everything from sap flows to dung to mud, to obtain the nutrients necessary for such a long life.

This butterfly has a wingspan of up to four inches that, when opened, are a velvety dark red/brown with yellow edges. Bright blue spots line

the black margin between the red/brown and yellow. On an older Mourning Cloak, the bright yellow wing edges faded to pale white, and the maroon of the wings becomes a more generic shade of brown.

When the weather turns cold, the Mourning Cloak replaces some of its body’s water with antifreeze-like chemicals called glycols and tucks itself under the bark of trees or in tree cavities. They fold their wings to hibernate, and the undersides camouflage with the wintry environment.

Uniquely, they hibernate twice a year. The summer hibernation is known as aestivation.

Local Sport Events

3 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD CHECK THEM OUT

Attending a local sports event can be a thrilling experience for anyone. Whether it's a high school football game, a minor league baseball game, or a community basketball tournament, there are many reasons to attend as a spectator. Here are three reasons your should find time to go to a local event:

Community Involvement

Attending a local sports event can provide an opportunity to get involved with your community. You can support your local teams and meet new people who share your passion for sports. You can bond over cheering for the same team and develop a sense of camaraderie and belonging with others. Going to a local sports event is also an excellent way to support local businesses that are sponsoring the event.

Affordable Entertainment

Compared to professional sports events, local sports events tend to be more affordable, and sometimes free, which means that you can enjoy a great day out without breaking the bank The cost of admission and food is usually much lower, making it accessible for families and those on a tight budget You can also expect to see high-quality competition and exciting games which is a win-win situation for everyone. You can also check out 'Lethbridge Presents' from the Lethbridge Public Library for free tickets to some events.

Exciting Atmosphere

Local sports events can be just as exciting as professional sports events, if not more so. With a smaller venue, the atmosphere is more personal and interactive You can get up close to the action, feel the energy of the crowd, and experience the excitement of a game-winning moment There's also a level of unpredictability, where anything can happen, which makes the event all the more exciting You never know when a local player might make a game-winning shot or score a touchdown, adding to the excitement

Attending local sports is an opportunity to support local teams, meet new people, and have a great time, all while enjoying the thrill of live sports So, why not give it a try and see for yourself the joy that a local sports event can bring!

People in Sport

J I M M Y C H I E F M O O N

Jimmy Chief Moon is a Blackfoot man who grew up around sports, following his father to the ice rink, to the baseball diamond, and watching his siblings on the gym floor His childhood was full of family journeys to towns and cities to compete in sports

Jimmy feels he was very fortunate in his youth to participate in sports events and travel with his father. “There was always something positive for the children to partake in; hockey games, basketball, baseball, movies, etc At that time, it seemed that many children were benefitting from these same activities, ranging in age from young to old”, says Jimmy. He believes that being a part of a team helped build his character and respect for others

Now, as an adult and father of 3, Jimmy can relive the infectious feelings and luxuries that come with being part of a team With his children carrying on the family sports tradition Lately, Jimmy has been gifted many opportunities to coach youth sports. Coaching youth teams has broadened his view of what life skills can be taught through sports. Jimmy feels it is important to spend his time producing those same opportunities he was gifted with in his youth.

Through his newfound faith, Jimmy has been pursuing a better path forward for himself, ultimately increasing his ability to enrich the lives of youth in his community using sports, activities, and all God gave him To this day, Jimmy actively participates and organizes youth events on & off his reserve; he runs a Facebook group to help keep his community active called ‘Kainai & Area Sports’; check it out to see what Jimmy’s community is up to next
