Happy festive season to all

DIY festive wreaths Christmas wreaths are easy to buy – but so much more rewarding and unique if you make them yourself. Two workshops show you how. Jane Dixon, a fine arts graduate and freelance arts administrator, is the brainchild behind the Burnbrae Wreath Makers Workshops at New Kilpatrick Church Hall (Old Halls), Douglas Place, Bearsden, on Sunday December 4, from 2pm to 4.30pm, and Wednesday December 7, from 7pm to 9.30pm. Guided by Jane, of Bearsden, participants will discover how to create a straw and sisal wreath base and then embellish it with natural materials, such as nuts, seed pods and pine cones, glitter

and other Christmas decorations. Jane says: “I have always enjoyed making items from natural products. My degree show featured paper made from thistle heads and fragile 3D objects made from de-constructed twine and string. “Then, working as a florist, I learned the techniques for the structure and design of wreaths. I have since created many of my own wreaths and they have been very popular at craft sales. “Many people also ask me how I go about making the wreaths

and how I come up with the designs so I thought I would run a couple of workshops. I think they will be fun and sociable as well as offering the chance to make a unique festive decoration for the home.” The cost of £30 per person for each workshop includes materials, instruction and a glass of Prosecco and mince pies. You can book at www.facebook.com/ burnbraewreathmakers/events/ or call Jane on 07503 010614. Jane will also be selling her own Christmas wreaths at the Milngavie Makers Market at Milngavie Town Hall on Saturday December 3 and can take private orders.

Alan Pash, of McOpera (Music CoOPERAtive Scotland), says: “This is the third year that the McOpera Ensemble has been in Bearsden and it is always a very popular concert. “The evening assures you of a wonderful start to the Christmas countdown and a lovely way to get you in the mood for the festive season. The church’s surroundings and acoustics are perfect.” McOpera was formed more than four years ago by musicians from The Orchestra of Scottish Opera, Scotland’s only fully professional opera orchestra, to provide and generate a range of artistically exciting and diverse work in Scotland. Tickets for the Bearsden concert, which are £10 for an adult, £5 for children under-18 and a family ticket for £22, can be bought from Purple Edge Graphics on Drymen Road in Bearsden, the Iron Chef in Milngavie or on the door. Advent at cairns church

Cairns Church in Milngavie is celebrating the advent of Christmas with four special Sunday evening events of performance and song. Participants from across the district are invited to take part in music, readings and acting on November 27 and December 4, 11 and 18. The hour-long performances are held in the centre of a circle of seats and in candle light in the church’s sanctuary.

At midnight on Christmas Eve, the same format is retained, but the music and structure is more traditional with carols.” The focus of the Advent evenings this year is remembering the story of Bethlehem. Cairns Church Minster Andrew Frater explains: “Remembering is important, but

sometimes our memories let us down. Fixing a list of items in sequence can be helpful, such as 30 days hath September, April, June and November. “But the most powerful aidememoire of all is a story. So significant are stories, they almost remember themselves… and they stick in the mind better than anything else. “During Advent we will immerse ourselves in the story of Bethlehem as depicted by Luke and Matthew. Hopefully, it will feel as though we have been conscripted into its plot, as if God himself was being written into every step of our lives. And if the tone is right and the atmosphere appropriate, we will feel as though we are riding the waves of a new, and much more significant, experience of faith.” Gwyn Kennedy, an elder at the church, says: “The four Sundays of Advent at Cairns provide a quiet space within which to experience something rather special.” You can find out more about the advent events at Cairns Church on Buchanan Street, Milngavie at www.cairnschurch.org.uk

CELLIST: Worldrenowned cellist Karine Georgian will be appearing at Cairns Church in Milngavie

Milngavie Music Club is delighted to welcome the world-acclaimed cellist Karine Georgian to play at Cairns Church this month. Partnered by pianist John Lenehan, the concert at 7.30pm on Friday December 9 will offer a programme featuring music by Beethoven, Brahms and Janacek, as well as a piece for cello and pre-recorded tape by Australian Carl Vine. Hugh Macdonald, president of the music club, said: “It’s a great honour to have Karine playing

for our audience in Milngavie and we look forward to a sell-out performance.” Karine is regarded as one of the outstanding exponents of the golden generation of Russian string playing. She was a student of the great cellist Rostropovich in Moscow before winning the Tchaikovsky International Competition and going on to

an international career that has taken her to leading concert halls all over the world. Karine’s Carnegie Hall debut was with her compatriot, the well-known composer Aram Khachaturian, conducting his cello concerto. Karine now lives in the UK and is a professor at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Every year Milngavie Music Club promotes a highly regarded International Chamber Music Concert Series. Hugh added: “The intimate atmosphere and warm acoustic of Cairns Church is an excellent setting for our annual series of concerts”. The concert series continues until April, with the first of 2017 taking place on January 20. Three of Scotland's top musicians will play a Brahms programme. Tickets for the concerts are £12 (students £5, school pupils free) from The Iron Chef, Mugdock Road, Milngavie, or at the venue on the night of the concert. See www.milngaviemusic. org or enquire at enquiries@ milngaviemusic.org or tel: 0141 942 3102.

Full circuits for fitness A local personal trainer has launched a series of three high intensity strength and fitness circuits sessions in Milngavie.

being sick. So I know first hand that many people are too self-conscious to go to a gym, or they are worried they are not fit enough for gym classes.

I have set up a business to help people to achieve their fitness goals

Kate Pearson’s classes at Milngavie Scout Hall are aimed at different types of people. The session on Tuesdays at 7.30pm is for newcomers to exercise. Kate says: “This circuits class is the perfect option for people new to exercise or who have had a break for running or other activities.” The other two sessions, one at 6.30am and another at 6.30pm, both on Tuesdays, are aimed at people who already run or do some form of activity. Kate says: “These classes are circuits based and ideal for runners. The exercises will provide an all-over workout, improving power, strength, agility and form. They are a great way to supplement the running you already do and to keep you fit and strong over

the winter months.” Kate, who is mum of a young child, recognises that not everyone likes the environment of a gym. It is the first competition of its kind that is aimed at showcasing young British freestyle talent, with each team, consisting of four riders including one “Young Gun” (under 15) and at least one female rider, uploading videos of tricks for judging.

Bearsden skiers and boarders are celebrating after winning a clutch of awards in the UK’s Championship Ski and Snowboard league. Both the freestyle ski and snowboard teams triumphed after a summer of hard-fought competitions in the inaugural CSS league. Bearsden Ski & Board Club athletes Matt and Chris McCormick also won best overall CSS snowboarder and best overall CSS skier respectively. Best Young

“We were stoked when we won Championship Snowboard but that went through the roof when the skiing result came through, too. It has been a fantastic competition to be part of and we look forward to next year.” Ed Leigh, presenter of Ski Sunday watched CSS closely over the summer. He said: “CSS has been a huge success. You’ll not find this kind of development in another country in Europe.

emphatic style, clinching victory in the last round, overtaking Hemel, from the Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead, in their final ski match. They went on to beat Hemel again in the final snowboarding round. Ten skiers and snowboarders from Bearsden Freestyle travelled to the Telegraph Ski & Snowboard Show to collect their prize money – £2,000 for each team – donated

by The Snowboard Asylum, Ellis Brigham and Delancey. Half of the prize money must be reinvested into freestyle sport at the club to help nurture new talent. Neil McGrain, of Bearsden Ski & Board Club, said: “CSS was a great concept to get slopes around the UK fired up to compete against each other from the comfort of their home turf.

“Not only does it give our best riders a stage to showcase their skills but almost more importantly it is nurturing the culture of British snowboarding. “Having the luxury of an international perspective on snowboarding I know that our closeknit scene is the envy of most nations. The camaraderie, rivalry and banter that CSS has created already will only further that.” See ski. championshipskiandsnowboard. co.uk and www.skibearsden.co.uk

reg Clements launched the practice in partnership with his wife, Val, in 1996. At the time he had been working for a large national hearing aid retailer and was motivated by the strong belief that he could do a better job for the clientele as an independent practitioner. Some twenty years on he is not shaken in this belief which was recently vindicated by the results of a Which report concerning hearing care provision, wherein the independent sector (often small service providers such as ourselves) outperformed both the NHS and all the large national chains. This report is readily available online or in the Which magazine and you can read more about it on our blog. al Clements has been involved in the practice since its inception in 1996 and is a now co director with Greg. Self effacingly, she is often heard to say that she is not the "technical one" and in so doing she is deferring to Greg. This is not at all a true

reflection of her abilities and she is a frequent and keen co-participant (with Greg) at educational events and seminars, Recently notable were her attendances at the Unitron professional development events in Vienna and at the Unite University in Manchester, with specific interest in a seminar on small business branding. The most important thing to Greg and Val is good customer service and it must remain personal. In this respect they believe they have a competitive advantage over some of their larger rivals. It's only Val and Greg so you will only ever be dealing with either or both of us. You get to know them and they get to know you.

December 2016 | Vet's Notes

Late News We bring you news and information about pets and animal care from your local vets. We’re happy to hear from other vets at Fiona@thecommunitymagazine.co.uk vomiting and not keen to eat. The decision was taken to X-ray Skye, which revealed something in her gut. Vets John and Danielle operated on the Labrador and when they opened up her abdomen they were able to remove a large stone. It seems that Skye loves to play with stones while being walked on the beach but her owners are now keeping a watchful eye on what she does with these stones. As the photo shows, Skye is back to enjoying the sunshine on her favourite beadh while she recovers.

Pet owners need to be extra vigilant to festive season dangers. There are several substances toxic to pets that are found in the home during the Christmas period.

Chocolate is one of the most common causes of poisoning, especially in dogs, but it is also toxic to cats, rodents and rabbits. Other hazardous festive items include sweets and liquorice; raisins and sultanas used to make Christmas cakes, mince pies and Christmas puddings; grapes, onions and garlic. Further dangers are the Blutack used to put up cards and decorations; and antifreeze, which is often used in vehicles in the winter months. Festive homes also contain additional hazards for pets such as electrical cables for Christmas tree lights, which could be very dangerous if chewed; decorations such as tinsel or broken glass baubles; and gift wrapping and bows. Pet owners should also take care not to leave batteries lying around because, if ingested, they may cause chemical burns to the mouth, throat and stomach. If in doubt about the health of you pet always contact your local vet.

The things you see at

Allander Park Continuing our occasional series, we reveal the story behind a striking poppy and butterfly carving at Allander Park, Clober Road, Milngavie.

with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE...

The new wooden carving stands next to a more established stone structure bearing a plaque with the words "Allander Park & Cloberfield Open Space". Cloberfield Open Space is part of the larger Allander Park, which was designated a Centenary Field in 2014 and commemorates those who died in World War I. The addition of the wooden carving this year is part of a global 2014 to 2018 commemoration of the Great War. The simple but intricate carving depicts three flowering poppies, two butterflies and two hedgehogs. It was created by the acclaimed chainsaw carver Iain Chalmers and commissioned by

Last month I had the pleasure of attending a fantastic performance in Cove by the singer Eleanor McEvoy, raising funds for a new defibrillator and the training of First Responders, volunteers who provide emergency care whilst awaiting an ambulance in rural areas. During the show, she applauded the efforts of volunteers and medical staff, suggesting that this was a much more important job than playing music. On reflection I wondered if this underestimated the healing powers of music and its ability to touch peoples' hearts and influence their minds.

Many important themes are addressed in music and some believe it promotes healing and well-being in many different illnesses. In our own Practice music and medicine have collided with the formation of a COPD Choir by one of our Practice Nurses. Applying the evidence that singing improves lung function she has persuaded almost 20 people to join the choir. The theory is that singing improves lung capacity and helps open airways which reduces the work of breathing and gets more oxygen into the body. The added benefits of doing this to music will surely lift their spirits - hopefully in time for some Christmas carols!

and parks. I also thought that people might like to be shown running routes in the countryside but close to the city. “Mugdock, the West Highland Way and the local hills are so easy to access but if you’re a visitor to the city – or new to running – you won’t know about these routes.”

Sharon O’Leary has devised six urban and rural running tours as part of her new enterprise, Glasgow Running Tours. Each run showcases Glasgow City or the neighbouring countryside.

...there is a growing trend for visitors to enjoy guided runs of cities worldwide.

One of the guided tours takes in Mugdock Country Park and heads along the West Highland Way, while the other ventures into the beautiful Kilpatrick hills. Sharon decided to have a change of career this year. She left her council job to set up Glasgow Running Tours and a dog walking business. She says: “I spotted a running tours company in Edinburgh and I thought it would be a great thing to do in Glasgow. I discovered that there is a growing trend for visitors to enjoy guided runs of cities worldwide.

Between a new party dress, accessories and a fresh haircut, a recent survey found that most British women splash £370 on the office bash. That's before you've even bought a drink! Housekeeping magazine says that updating an old dress with fresh accessories is often the best way to go. That said, if you want to look great for party season, our high street has plenty to offer without hitting sky-high price tags.

The run-up to Christmas is a crucial time for traders, and there are loads of very good reasons why customers should think of all the locally-run shops when looking for presents this year Firstly with so many boutique shops that special gift is easy to find, it is simply a nice place to be. Become a Cheery Lady A fun and sociable Cheery Ladies Keep Fit group is keen to welcome new members to twice weekly classes in Baljaffray Church Hall. The group for ladies aged over 60, on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10am to 10.45am, offers a format of gentle exercise to pleasant music followed by a “right good blether” over a cup of tea or coffee. Cheery Ladies is led by former PE teacher and keen local golfer, Helen Robertson. She says: “I love taking these classes because everyone is so cheery and positive. Apart from keeping them all fit and healthy, the group is also a social event where they keep up to date about what’s going on in the local communities.” Helen has been organising Cheery Ladies for almost 20 years although it was in the late 1970s that the exercise class concept was first devised.

It was known then as The Dorothy Dobson Over 60s Exercise Class and was held in the games hall of Dundee University. The movement spread as quickly as the two founders could identify and train mature PE teachers or physiotherapists. By the time Dorothy retired in 2014 there were 52 classes held each week in Scotland and several in England.

Top Gifts for the Grandkids

The festive season is just around the corner so it’s time to start thinking about what to get the grandchildren this year. The shops are full of dazzling arrays of toys and games and it can be confusing when deciding which options to choose. In order to make your Christmas shopping easier, here is a list of the top 10 toys, (voted by kids themselves) with indicative pricing. We are sure these choices will delight any grandchild.

5. Air Storm Firetek Bow £29.99 6. Anki OVERDRIVE Supertrucks - 59.99 7. Furby Connect - £99.99 8. Zoomer Chimp - £119.99 9. Silly Sausage - £19.99 10. VTechKidi Super Star £49.99

3. Nerf Modulus Tri-Strike Blaster - £59.97

Girls preferred the Hatchimals and voted it their best toy whilst boys plumped for Skylanders Imaginators although both agreed that the Nerf Modulus was the coolest toy. I can agree with that last option as my 9 year old son has been almost obsessed with his Nerf Blaster and accessories since receiving it for his birthday last month.

4. Play-Doh Ice Cream Castle - £16.49

All options are available at major toy stores and online.

1. Skylanders Imaginators £46.99 2. Hatchimals - £59.99

SINGERS: SING aLOUD music group started off with only 14 singers but have seen that figure rise to 100 in the last ten months

When SING aLOUD started 10 months ago there were just 14 singers. Now 100 people “sing their hearts out for fun” every week. The founder, professional musician and singing leader Bryan Marshall, is delighted by how quickly the group has grown. There are currently sessions each week in three locations, Bearsden, Bishopbriggs and Lenzie, and a new one is planned in Bishopbriggs for 2017.

ABOUT US

It is very relaxed and there is no pressure to perform. We do not ask people to audition and nor do they need to read music. People can just turn up for their first taster session for free and see what they think. We are always happy to welcome new people. “It has been so amazing to see how popular SING aLOUD has become and I think this is because of what I call the Gareth Malone

The songs cover a wide range of genres including pop, traditional, folk, jazz, country and gospel. Each session sees a new song introduced, while singers continue to work on the songs learnt at previous sessions. Bryan, who is also musical director of Westerton Male Voice Choir, adds: “Due to popular demand I’m starting another SING aLOUD session on Thursday January 12, 1pm to 2.30pm at Bishopbriggs Guide Hall. Bearsden and Milngavie singers are welcome!” The other SING aLOUD sessions take place on Tuesdays, 10am to 11:30am, in Lenzie Union Parish Church Hall, on Thursdays from 10am to 11:30am at Westerton Parish Church Hall and from 7:30pm to 9pm at Colston Wellpark Church Hall in Bishopbriggs. Taking the write steps and the day turned out to be wonderfully inspiring and informative.”

PRESTIGIOUS: Mingavie author, Leela Soma, spoke recently at an event in London about writing

A Milngavie author who was chosen to join a prestigious writing initiative with a top publishing house is encouraging others to follow suit. Leela Soma, the author of Twice Born, Bombay Baby and Boxed In, was selected to be part of the Penguin Random House project, Write Now Live, which aims to assist writers from “groups under-represented on the nation’s bookshelves”. Penguin Random House, the UK’s biggest publisher, invited just 50 people from thousands of applicants for the day-long event in London. There are two

more events in Birmingham and Manchester, after which 10 writers will be selected for a mentorship programme and the potential to land a publishing contract. Leela says: “Write Now Live gives writers, regardless of their class, race, religion, disability, ethnicity, gender or sexual proclivities, the chance to become published. It was an honour for me to be selected for the event in London

The event offered a chance for Leela to network with the Penguin Random House team, published authors and agents. She enjoyed a talk entitled Publishing Demystified and heard from a panel of respected authors who revealed how they got published. The selected writers were also asked to reveal their views on the steps that need to be taken by the publishing industry for more inclusivity of writers. Leela says: “It was a thoroughly worthwhile day ending with a one-to-one session with an editor to look over the manuscripts that we had submitted at the start of the process. “After my experience I want to encourage other writers in Bearsden and Milngavie to look out for this writing initiative next year, or similar projects, that encourage and assist people from marginalised groups.” See www.write-now.live and Leela’s website leelasoma.com.

GOOD

COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.

But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:

"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."

"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
