Will to row the Atlantic food restrictions and the challenge of getting along with three people he hardly knows. The crew will share a rowing rota of two hours on, two hours off for the entire journey. The ex-president of his university’s rowing team has already personally raised £60,000, alongside crew members, but needs £40,000 more to take part in the endurance event.
Will Whitehead is preparing to spend three months at sea rowing 3,000 nautical miles
A young rower from Baljaffray is bidding to attract sponsors to support a courageous crossing of the Atlantic Ocean this year. Will Whitehead, 22, is preparing to spend three months at sea rowing 3,000 nautical miles through potentially life-threatening conditions in
BUILDING
the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. He will face huge waves of up to 40ft, great white sharks, salt sores, severe sleep deprivation,
ROOFING
Will says: “From the moment I saw the Atlantic Challenge on TV I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I even finished uni and started my first job but it played on my mind. In the end, I decided I had to do it, to fulfill a dream of taking on a huge adventure.” His first task was to find three people to join his ocean bid. Will says: “I met Paul, Mark and his nephew Dan quite recently for the first time and they have agreed to join me. It is daunting that I do not know them that well yet but they are as enthusiastic as me and that is a big part of this challenge.” The crew’s ages range from Will to Mark Brownjohn, of the Isle of Wight, who is 60.
Will is excited that he has enough money to pay for the R45 ocean going rowing boat but now needs finances to support training, insurance, kit and entry to the race. He is also raising funds for two charities, the RNLI and the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. Will says: “I hope local businesses might take the opportunity to support us in some way. Fewer people have rowed across an ocean than have climbed Everest or been into space. Plus the race is televised so it’s a chance to have their name associated with an epic adventure event. If people want to donate to our fundraiser that would be awesome, too." The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge sets off in December from San Sebastian in La Gomera to Nelson’s Dockyard English Harbour in Antigua. Only around 12 crews, from solo to five people take part each year. We recently reported on another local rower Elaine Hopley who will take on the same challenge solo. See Will’s website www.zimbuktu.net for further information.

Teachers at the school wanted to take after-school classes and they really believed in these activities. “There was no pressure to succeed but there was enthusiasm to join in and try.” Her first sporting triumph was in martial arts and was supported by the then art teacher, Ken Davis, who was also a black belt in karate. NEW RACE SERIES SET TO RUN IN 2017 The Dunbartonshire 10k Series will replace the Polaroid Series after thirty three years, with the introduction of a brand new race. Race Director of the Helensburgh 10k, Kevin Johnson paid tribute to the loyalty and professionalism of Polaroid and in particular Paul Sheerin, the longtime Chair of the organising committee. The Polaroid Series was one of the longest and most successful sponsorships in grassroots sport in the UK and one in which the three local athletics clubs Helensburgh, Dumbarton and Clydesdale are rightly proud. The new organising team shortly hope to announce the title sponsor but have already secured significant support from running retailer, Start Fitness and footwear and apparel brand More Mile. It is expected that AG Barr's Strathmore Water will be keeping the runners hydrated and refreshed once again. Two existing races remain and one new event will be announced shortly, rumoured to be nearby.
The dates are:
• Helensburgh
Thursday 4th May 7.30pm
• Dumbarton
Thursday 11th May 7.30pm
• To be announced
Sunday 21st May 10am
Like its' predecessor, it is intended that the new series appeals to Olympic athletes, such as past winners Derek Hawkins and Tsegay Tewelde and recreational and social runners alike. Whether a serious runner or simply looking to complete the distance you are equally welcome. Each race is expected to attract around a thousand runners. All finishers will receive a medal unique to each event, together with a goody bag. There will be ÂŁ3,000 worth of Start Fitness vouchers for category and team winners and all series entrants will receive a high quality More Mile technical t-shirt.
As in the past, all races will feature chip timing producing real time results and the usual high standards of race organisation. You can enter at entrycentral. com. Race entries are ÂŁ17 for club members/affiliated runners and ÂŁ19 for unaffiliated. Series entries are ÂŁ42.50 affiliated and ÂŁ48.50 unaffiliated.

Stevie scoops top award Pictured (left to right) are Gail Prince CEO, Scottish Association of Local Sports Councils, Steve Cullen and Moira Ord MBE, Chair of Sports Council for Glasgow Life
A coach at a local athletics club has been honoured for his dedication to the sport at the Sports Council for Glasgow Awards. Stevie Cullen, of Garscube Harriers, won the highest accolade of the awards ceremony, held late last year, taking the trophy for Service to Sport. He was nominated by club president, Jill O’Neil, who said: “In his 46 years at Garscube Harriers, Stevie has made a huge contribution to athletics and has held a large number of volunteer roles in this
time with the club, the Glasgow Athletics Association (GAA) and also the Transplant Games.” Stevie first joined the committee of Garscube Harriers in 1975 as an ordinary member before becoming club secretary. In the 1980s he began coaching because he was keen to see the club expand and improve. Over the coming years he went on to be
club captain, track captain and also senior head coach. His own running has been curtailed recently due to injury however that doesn’t stop his enthusiasm for the sport and his passion to see young athletes improve. Stevie is a regular fixture at the club continuing to act as lead coach for a number of the junior athletes, with a particular interest in middle distance running. He was also one of the founding committee members of the GAA and originally the treasurer. He first attended the Transplant Games in 1988 as a supporter and the year after his wife had her first transplant. Since 1990 he has been Team Manager. There was more success for the club at the annual sports council awards when Robert Cuthbertson was highly commended in the category of performance coach of the year. Nicola Adams-Henry and Calum Esler were also highly commended for Senior Outstanding Performance and Junior Volunteer of the Year, respectively.

At the recent Adult National Course, the club had eight successful gradings, with new 1st Dan black belts (Emma Armstrong, 34, Scott Burgess, 43, David Craig, 61 and Ashleigh Trainer, 18), two junior black belts (Carla, 14, and Robbie 16), a blue belt (Diana, 49) and an orange belt (Iain, "closer to 55 than 50").
If you are looking for a new way to get fit and improve your health and well-being in 2017, why not give Bearsden Martial Arts Club a try? The club provides training sessions for adults and children in a martial art that has its roots in Shotokai Karate and, reflecting the interests of the senior instructors, has evolved to incorporate elements of many martial arts, such as judo, jiujitsu and aikido. The list of benefits of martial arts practice includes better fitness, balance and flexibility.
MY HOME IS WHERE IS... Takeart is a play on words which conveys the feelings of artist Ron Wilson after the last twenty years, when a quadruple heart bypass caused a break in continuity of his watercolour and oil paintings and the giving up of the highly successful Wilson Wilson Gallery in Croftamie. The trauma of that and consequent drama was aggravated by the sad death of his wife Nora. Nevertheless, Ron continued to be busy with the paintbrush and had considerable successful outlets and commissions which helped his sanity. So much so he has accumulated quite a portfolio and did nothing to place them around other galleries as previously.
Therefore he is now, in his late years, presenting a show in Buchlyvie to help ‘clear the decks’ while he can. There is much to see and a five percent of sales will go to British Heart Foundation. Whether he can continue ad infinitum will depend on his ability to locate ‘Gallery Minders’ on a twenty percent basis.
Please contact Ron anytime on 07712 671 126
Scott Burgess from the club adds: “As well as the more obvious fitness aspects, martial arts helps people to gain confidence and ability when it comes to selfdefence. “And many people find that a session of hitting pads is also a wonderful way to relieve stress after a particularly busy day.” Bearsden Martial Arts Club has been running classes for more
than 30 years and has training two nights each week. Tuesdays is at Bearsden Academy and Wednesdays at St Joseph’s PS in Milngavie, 7-8pm for juniors and 8-9.30pm for adults. The chief instructor, Hugh Russell, has 40 years of experience in various martial arts and is a 9th Dan Black Belt. He is assisted by Eric Walton (3rd Dan Black Belt), Ross Walton (2nd Dan Black Belt) and John Marley (1st Dan Black Belt). The over-arching principle is one of self-defence and the emphasis is on self-development and continual improvement rather than competitive fighting. Scott says: “We can cater for newcomers, male and female, children as young as five and for adults of all ages. For example, one member Ross started with us aged six and is now 23 and a 2nd Dan Black Belt, while another member started in his 50s and loves the fitness element of the sport.” More information at www. bearsdenmartialarts.org, on Facebook at facebook.com/ BearsdenMartialArts/ and on Twitter @BearsdenMAC.

Geraldine, Michelle and Jennifer of Café Crème
For as long as they can remember, sisters Geraldine, Michelle and Jennifer Boyle had the dream of running their own café, to enable them to spend their time at work together. This dream became a reality five years ago when they had the opportunity to buy Café Crème, based at Bearsden Cross. The business is one of the oldest in Bearsden and they recall, when they were younger, hoping that one day they’d get the chance to run this particular café. Buying over an existing business did not come without its challenges, but after much discussion with customers and staff, they kept the main focus of the original café the same, with a gradual introduction of small changes. Their vision to create an extremely friendly, home-from-home environment is quite apparent, with many regular customers visiting daily. Geraldine, Michelle and Jennifer are extremely grateful to their large group of loyal supporters, some of whom even donate their own china cups and saucers to be used in the café. The supporting staff team are also a huge asset and can always be relied upon when the sisters take a well-earned holiday. They grew up in Bearsden and the sisters have many happy childhood memories of dining out around the area. They were keen to run a business based in East Dunbartonshire to be close to their families and specifically at Bearsden Cross because they feel it’s at the centre of their own community. How do they juggle the challenges of family life and running a business? “We tag team”, explains Michelle, “I recently had a baby so instead of being in the café during the day I deal with the paperwork at home. We are always aware that the lines between our family and the business merge and are forever combining the two.” There is a large philanthropic side to their business, which the sisters are extremely modest about, but suffice to say they support many local charities in their own quiet, generous way. In terms of advice to people thinking of setting up their own business, the sisters have four recommendations, “Be prepared for hard work, listen to your customers and staff, be adaptable and develop a thick skin.” “Our Business Adviser Colin Dunn has given us the courage to take our business to the next level. He has helped us consider other options for growing the company that we would not have done without the support and encouragement of Business Gateway.” 2017 is an iconic year for the café as it reaches its 30th birthday and the sisters reveal that they have a few celebrations in store. Meantime, a visit to this oasis of friendly staff combined with delicious food is proof that the owners are indeed a phenomenal sister act.

A local community youth club for children with language, speech and communication difficulties is keen to welcome new members. The club is run by The Speech Language Communication Company, (SLCO), a charity which supports children and young people with speech and language impairments. The club is aimed at 11 to 18 year olds and meets every Sunday from 6pm to 8pm in the Bearsden Scout Hall on Jubilee Path, off Roman Road. The group offers a chance for young people to make new friends, build confidence and enjoy a variety of activities. Children are also encouraged to
develop new skills and discover hidden talents. Team Leader Laura Jennings says: “It’s a welcoming group and the young people get to do all kinds of different things, including board games, drama and arts and crafts. “We help young people acquire new skills by using electronic tablets and the kids really enjoy playing Wii games together which helps boost social communication. We also encourage them to play team games each week, such as hockey and bench ball.”
The youth club is part of a range of supports offered by the charity. SLCo provides information and guidance, connects parents and carers with each other to share experiences and set up their own local support networks. To join the SLCO youth group there is a £5 membership fee and a weekly club fee. Clean up Frankie
NAPIER& CO
Milngavie volunteer Frankie Livingston has received a prestigious accolade for her continued commitment to the environment.
EST 1947 – 70 YEARS IN BEARSDEN
Frankie was handed the Clean Up Scotland “Hero of the Month” award in recognition of her litter picking in the local area. The award is part of Beautiful Scotland’s national Clean Up Scotland campaign. A founding member of the Milngavie Clean Sweep initiative, which is part of Milngavie in Bloom, Frankie is one of the group’s hardest working members. Her efforts have helped to deliver huge transformations in the local area, from tackling troublesome littered sites to removing halfsubmerged supermarket trolleys singlehandedly from the river. Frankie, alongside her husband Hugh, has helped to encourage significantly more support for the programme, from Tesco staff to local volunteers, thanks to her

infectious enthusiasm and passion for keeping the local area clean. On receiving the award late last year, she said: “I think it is important to pick up litter for a number of reasons. It makes a big difference to the local area and even 30 minutes of litter picking can enhance the surroundings no end. “It is also enjoyable as I am out in the fresh air, getting some exercise and doing something really useful. It feels good.
Grab a Great mortGaGe deal Although the long term impact of Brexit and the recent elections result in the United States on future mortgate interest rates is uncertain, action can be taken now to fix your repayments. Borrowers with fixed rate mortgages ending as far away as July 2017 could consider getting hold of a new deal now before these low rates potentially disappear.
Next to purchasing your home, choosing the right mortgage is probably one of the most important decisions you will make when you are looking for a new deal.
Since the Bank of England lowered the base rate to 0.25 per cent, there have been a number of new two year fixed deals appearing on the market at interest rates never seen before.
Making the wrong choice about your mortgage can result in you having to pay hundreds if not thousands of pounds more than you need to pay.
Although these two year deals may seem attractive and could suit some borrowers, they may not be the best choice for those people who’s fixed rate deal ends while the UK may be experiencing potentially difficult times going through the process of leaving the EU.
For further information on how you could potentially save money each month on your mortgage and secure your future repayments, call The Mortgage Advice Service on 0800 011 2827 or logon to www.themortgageadvice service.co.uk
“I can walk through a park or along a street where I have litter picked and feel proud of what I’ve achieved. Perhaps, most importantly, it helps to prevent further littering. We hope people are less likely to drop litter in areas that are litter free.” The Clean Up Scotland Hero award is supported by Helping Hand Environmental who provide each Hero with a Clean Up kit. The key to better health Every New Year so many of us pledge to become fitter and healthier – but what if injuries and niggles are holding you back? A sore back, tight leg muscles, neck pain, foot issues and general lack of flexibility and easy movement can all present obstacles to achieving your fitness goals. At Bearsden Osteopaths, owner Linda Canning says: “Many people think that osteopaths treat only backs but in fact we treat the whole body to improve function in any given area. “There are only 161 osteopaths in Scotland, registered with the General Osteopathic Council, which is perhaps why the public do not know about what we do.” Osteopathy is a form of manual therapy that aims to improve the body’s overall function.
Linda offers a biomechanics assessment before treatments tailored to the individual. This might include massage, acupuncture, stretches, exercises and kinesiology taping. For 2017, the practice also

At the time he had been working for a large national hearing aid retailer and was motivated by the strong belief that he could do a better job for the clientele as an independent practitioner. Some twenty years on he is not shaken in this belief which was recently vindicated by the results of a Which report concerning hearing care provision, wherein the independent sector (often small service providers such as ourselves) outperformed both the NHS and all the large national chains. This report is readily available online or in the Which magazine and you can read more about it on our blog. al Clements has been involved in the practice since its inception in 1996 and is a now co director with Greg. Couch to 5km jog success
What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn
This month: THE TIME IS NOW Members of the Jog Scotland Mingavie "couch to 5km" beginners group, which has proved to be very successful
A Jog Scotland Milngavie beginners’ group has proved a resounding success. The weekly newcomers’ session was launched last year in response to a demand from people who wanted to join the main group but were not able to run the full distance of the Thursday evening session. Some 15 joggers, including one man, have regularly attended the “couch to 5km” group and many will soon move on to the main group.
“It has been a very successful group and many of the runners have shown great determination, even over the winter. “We wanted to offer a stepping stone for those who were new to jogging or returners to running and over several months they have built up their distances to the stage where they can join the main group.
The coaches who have given their time to this venture include Fran Murray, Kay Hunter, Claire Rigg and Heather Fuller.
“It’s also great to see many new friendships formed and healthy new habits. I am delighted we have been able to offer this group to beginners.”
Dawn Hunter, one of the Jog Scotland Milngavie leaders, says:
To find out more contact Jog Scotland Milngavie on Facebook.
How many times last year did you make a plan, only to find that you didn’t even make a start? Often for good reason in the busy lives we lead, things are put off for another day, as something else seems more urgent. As a doctor I believe that health is our first priority, and try to encourage people to take immediate action to improve their health, or wellness. It can be impressive to see people making positive changes as a result. Last year I was inspired by Andy Murray’s determination, his coach urging him that “the time is now!” throughout his
matches. If we could capture some of that grit and apply it to our physical and mental well-being, think of the changes we could make. Most of us have challenges that we set ourselves, whether it’s running a marathon, stopping smoking, losing weight, gaining weight, stopping drinking, getting help with depression or simply getting time to unwind with friends. We can’t put our lives on pause, but we can start the year without making resolutions… instead taking immediate action. What will you do differently today?

Tips for the Write Career Career consultant and author of Creating Your Classic Career, Alison Spencer, of Baljaffray, reveals her top tips for a more rewarding job. Reframe your goals: When you left school or university, your goal for work might have been to simply earn money or to rise up the career ladder. But years later your goal might be to work part-time, raise a family, feel happier or more rewarded at work, or a mix of all these things. Looking at your career in a different goal frame is very valuable. Get out a rut: Just because you have been in the same job and earning the same wage for many years doesn’t mean you can't try something different or new. No easy fix: If you are unhappy or lack rewards in your job, it can take time to find a new job or career that you love. It might mean re-training or learning new skills but it’s not

how much money you do need and then reassess your work goals. Try first: Before making a career change, why not work part-time for less money or volunteer in the area where you think you might like to work? That way you will find out if that is really what you want to do. Portfolio career: Many people these days have several different lines of work, especially if they are self-employed. A portfolio career, with a few part-time jobs, might suit you because it offers different rewards for different roles. Invest in yourself: Rather than booking a holiday or buying a car to make you feel better, why not invest in yourself and spend time and money pursuing a new career? This month: SMOKING BAN IN VEHICLES
Blow away the cobwebs of the festive season with a New Year’s trail walk. The Bearsden & Milngavie Ramblers lead a busy programme of walks year-round and they will start 2017 with a fairly easy going outing on January 2. Led by Moira Allan and Euan Kilpatrick, the Grade C walk is a return distance of six miles from Mugdock Visitor Centre to Blanefield. The group will meet at Milngavie Station Car Park at 10:30am. There will be a stop for lunch at the Blane Valley Inn. Members of the group should call Moira to find out if there are any places left. Non-members can join the group for walks throughout the year. www.bearsdenandmilngavie ramblers.org.uk
It is now illegal in Scotland for any adult to smoke in a private motor vehicle whilst there is a child also in the car. For this purpose, a child is considered to be any person under the age of 18. The Smoking Prohibition (Children in Motor Vehicles) (Scotland) Bill was unanimously voted in by MSPs in the Scottish Parliament with a view to protecting children from harmful effects of second hand smoke. This legislation only recently came in to force on 5th December 2016. Notwithstanding that it may
not yet be widely known by the general public, you can now be given a £100 on the spot penalty fine or up to £1000 court fine, in the event you are found smoking with children in a private car. Similar laws have already been in force in England and Wales for over a year, although the stipulated fine is significantly less. Speculation suggests that it may be difficult to enforce these new laws and figures released show that there was in fact just one fine imposed in the first year in England and Wales. Only time will tell if this new ban will have any significant impact in Scotland.

of clinical care. We do things differently at Foot Medic, we don’t just treat people’s feet, we relieve pain, improve quality of life and ultimately make people feel better” Foot ailments can be the first sign of a more serious medical problem so its always a good idea to have them checked regularly. Conditions like arthritis, diabetes, nerve and circulatory disorders can show their initial symptoms in your feet. Ciaran says “There is still some

confusion about podiatry and chiropody. For instance, if someone feels ill, they’ll consult their doctor, for teeth, the dentist, the optician for eyes and so on. Far too many people still don’t know where they should go with foot problems. When it comes to the feet, the obvious choice is the expert in the foot and limb - the podiatrist”. Ciaran explains “Because we have developed an advanced foot care clinic we are able to offer

Pet fitness If humans can pledge a New Year, New You then why not pets, too? Helping pets to keep their weight down leads to many fitness and health benefits, such as reducing the strain on joints and allowing animals to enjoy more playtime.
Poor Pirate Three-year-old Pirate the cat (pictured) was back at Avalon vets recently after his owner, Cat, noticed he was walking abnormally. Cat, who is one of the practice nurses, was worried because Pirate’s pelvis was injured in a road traffic accident a year ago. After examination by the vet, Alison, it was found he did have pain in his mid-thoracic spine and also lumbar spine although subsequent X-rays did not reveal anything alarming. Alison believes Pirate injured himself doing something silly while running around the house behaving like a kitten, rather than it being connected to the previous accident. Pirate was started on painkillers and had two sessions of

New choir for carers Tricia: put on by local talent groups. A few carers said they would enjoy being part of a choir.
Choir leader Bryan Marshall will co-ordinate the new Carers Choir when they launch in January 2017
“We approach Bryan, who leads a number of local choir groups, and he happily agreed to co-ordinate the choir.” There is no audition required for the Carers Choir and all carers in East Dunbartonshire are welcome. There will be a portation pick up organised from Bishopbriggs if carers require this. Amrit says: “The aim is to offer something fun for carers to come along to each month. There will be no performance focus, just the chance to enjoy singing a range of songs together.
Carers in our local communities are being invited to join a special choir being organised by East Dunbartonshire’s Carers Link. The monthly sessions will be run by Bryan Marshall, who already leads many popular choirs such as Westerton Male Voice Choir, Kirkintilloch Ladies Choir and SING aLOUD. The first Carers Choir meeting is on Tuesday January 10, from

Local author Tricia Robertson has recently published a second book in a series that reveals a wealth of psychical case studies. Tricia, who has lived in Bearsden and Milngavie for more than 50 years, saw success with the first book, Things You Can Do When You're Dead. The second is entitled More Things You Can Do When You're Dead. A former maths and physics teacher, Tricia says: “The sequel digs deeper into my extensive casebook of psychical phenomena, which I believe provide evidence for survival after death.” The book is described as a “no-nonsense approach to phenomena and in a knowledgeable, enjoyable and easily understood style”. “Studies show that singing can be a great stress reliever and for our carers it’s a chance to spend time with other people, which can be hugely beneficial for those who feel isolated due to being a carer. We encourage anyone who is interested to come along to the first meet up to find out more about what the choir will offer.”

GOOD
COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.
But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:
"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."
"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.

Senior Savvy with Suhail Rehman
This month: Are you planning a health blitz in the New Year? Well if you are anything like me then then the usual pattern is likely to happen, you will hit it for 3 weeks, lose a few kilos, then gradually slip gently back into the old habits and your cosy slippers. Being a senior doesn’t mean having to give up the gym or losing touch with regular exercise. I recently met with the wonderful April Logan who works with the Glasgow University Health and Fitness Team. They run a wonderful and vibrant Active Age Programme at the nearby Garscube Sports Complex which is open to all seniors in Bearsden and Milngavie. They run various classes during the week combining
gentle aerobics, body strengthening and flexibility. And in keeping with the social aspect the class gets together for a cuppa and chat afterwards. They are currently offering anyone a week’s free pass to try any of their classes as they want folk to try before they sign up. And why not bring a buddy, exercise buddies have proven to be more effective that exercising alone – plus we all like a good gab to take our mind off it. Classes are then available on a pay as you go basis – so no long term subscriptions! For more information, April can be contacted on 0141 330 5363 or 07766 054019

Ken’s player sup Local businessman Ken Godsman has recently pledged his company’s support to two aspiring female Scottish Hockey players. Ken, director of ACT Construction in Anniesland, is sponsoring Kareena “Kaz” Cuthbert and Robyn Collins, who play in the Scotland Senior Women Squad. Kaz, 29, boasts an impressive player CV with more than 100 caps and many highlight achievements including being part of the winning 2011 European Trophy team and sixth in the European Championships 2015, during which she scored a goal against England. She has played in the Commonwealth Games 2010 in Delhi but was forced to miss out

port Kaz, who works as a physiotherapist, reveals the ACT sponsorship comes at the perfect time for both her and Robyn. She says: “The Scotland squad are focusing on some big competitions including the World Cup qualifiers, the European Champs later this year and the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018. “We need to take a lot of time off work for training, travel and competitions and the financial support is invaluable in allowing us to pursue our sport. We are very grateful to Ken.” Ken, of Bearsden, says: “I’ve been involved in Scottish cricket for many years and my home side is in Greenock. Kaz is also from Greenock and I’ve seen her grow to become a seasoned high performance international athlete. “I know it is difficult for hockey players to attract sponsorship and I am happy to be supporting two dedicated athletes.”
Dawn’s ‘amazing Space’
A former painter and decorator’s hut in Bearsden has been beautifully revamped into what is easily the area’s smallest hair salon. Hair stylist Dawn Richardson spotted the unique opportunity to transform the wooden hut opposite Hillfoot train station into her new workplace. Tête-à-Tête is the name of the petite new hair salon, where former Vidal Sassoon director Dawn remodelled and designed the interior herself. With its distinctive grey-green exterior and orange window, Tête-à-Tête has been attracting admiring glances from passersby who watched it being revamped and refurbished over several months.
Dawn, of Blanefield, said: “From the moment I saw inside the hut I could see its potential. It was unloved and very shabby but not in a chic way! “I gradually worked away at it over the summer last year with help from my two sons and friends. “Everyone's started to call it ‘Dawn’s Amazing Space’ but I had a very particular vision of what I wanted it to be like.” Dawn is famous among her friends and clients for her love of transforming interiors.
The hair stylist added: “I like getting my sleeves rolled up and especially with projects like this one. “I wanted Tête-à-Tête to be a comfortable and stylish space that people enjoy coming to. "The name for me reflects a simple one-to-one approach with my clients. My philosophy with hair and to style in general is that it takes a wee bit of effort to look effortlessly stylish." Tête-à-Tête is now formally open for business. Dawn can be contacted on 0796 895 4530 and email: dawn@tete-a-tete.uk.com. Also see www.tete-a-tete.uk.com
