A new folk club is inviting musicians and “those who simply like to listenâ€? to a special St Andrew’s Day celebration evening. Nova Scotia Folk Club has been a growing success since it was launched in July and founder Gina Graham says they are always happy to welcome new people to the weekly meet-ups at Milngavie cafĂŠ Meet Me @ The Corner. This month, one of the Wednesday sessions will be marked at St Andrew’s Day with Scottish folk music, food and drink. Gina says: “I’ve been delighted by how many people are keen to be involved with the folk club, whether to play or to be in
the audience, but not everyone knows about our club yet. “On November 25th our regular evening will be specially dedicated to St Andrew’s Day and then we will have a Hogmanay night on December 31. It would be great to see new faces. The weekly folk club takes place on Wednesdays from 7.30pm. During four hours, each musician is given a fl oor spot for two to three songs. At the end of the evening, Gina offers musicians the chance to play with other people. She says: “The format works
really well and everyone gets a chance to do their own thing and then get-together with others for more sets. If there’s time later on we have a less formal jamming session. The audience and musicians enjoy playing and singing together.â€? Gina is delighted by the response of local people to Nova Scotia. She says: “It’s become a popular night at the cafĂŠ and the atmosphere is so friendly. Lots of people have said how welcoming it is and many people in the audience say how comfortable they feel.â€? See www.facebook.com/ novascotiafolkclub for more details. To order tickets for the two special nights contact Richard Foxley at Meet Me @ the Corner cafĂŠ on 0141 956 7290.

It might have been a wet and cold summer, but a Bearsden resident beat the odds to produce his ďŹ rst prizewinning vegetable.
Alison and Gordon MacFarlan took over as organisers around seven years ago. The contest, which also raises money for charity, includes more than a dozen homes in Russell Drive. Each spring, a vegetable is chosen and at the end of the summer there’s a Judgement Day. Over the years, there have been prizes for the longest carrot, the biggest aubergine and the heaviest potatoes.
Tony MacFarlane was delighted to triumph in his street’s annual vegetable competition, which this year called on residents to grow the longest runner bean. Tony, of Russell Drive, said: “I was very surprised to win and it is was just luck, I think. I’ve never come close to winning before so it was lovely to achieve fi rst place this year. His wife, Meg, said she could take no credit for their 29.5cm runner bean. She added: “It’s Tony who has the green fi ngers. I just watch on as he does the growing each year.

The Russell Drive vegetable growing competition has been run for 15 years and was founded in community streets people by Tricia Craig. She said: “I pass each other but do not stop started it as a bit of fun and as an annual get-together. So often to chat. We enjoy the vegetable

This summer’s poor weather saw many residents struggling with their runner beans. Some had nothing to show for months of trying although 14 couples and families grew beans ranging from four centimetres to Tony’s winner. The Sommerville family was second with a 27.5cm bean and in third place was the Sleight family with a 25cm bean. il est un triomphe! A call out in the Community Magazine for people to meet up for French conversation sessions has been a resounding success. Within days of publication of the September article, group organiser Alison Lapping had received numerous enquiries. A couple of weeks later, the fi rst meeting took place at Meet Me @ The Corner Café in Milngavie with some 10 people turning up. Numbers are continuing to grow. Alison, a mum of two from Milngavie, says: “I’m delighted by the response to the article in the magazine and it’s fantastic to now have a French conversation group set up.

KEEPING ANTIOBOTICS EFFECTIVE
“Without urgent action, the world is heading towards a post-antibiotic era, in which common infections and minor injuries, which have been treatable for decades, can once again kill.” This chilling prediction from the World Health Organisation conjures up images from the Middle Ages. Since their discovery by Alexander Fleming in 1928, antibiotics have saved millions of lives. However, the germs that they are designed to kill are fast becoming resistant. It is harder to keep developing new ones, to beat the “super-bugs”. The more they are used, the faster resistance grows. However we rely heavily on them; without antibiotics we could not
safely have organ transplants, chemotherapy for cancer, or major operations. We can all help reduce this growing resistance. GPs have been advised not to prescribe antibiotics unless absolutely necessary. There is concern that they feel under pressure to prescribe them to patients suffering from simple viral infections, which the body can fi ght with natural defences. Most colds last fi ve days and a viral cough can last for three weeks before settling. So the next time your doctor suggests not using antibiotics, remember you may be helping to keep them effective for when you, or your family, really need them!

multi trade installation service. They really do tick all the boxes – and judging from the number of recommendations from their customers, it’s a winning combination.
Owners Tom and Helen have been so inspired by the stunning new ranges from their long time German kitchen manufacturer Pronorm, they have just added a further two complete room sets to their beautiful showroom.
With a very busy schedule ahead of him Tom puts Affordable Luxuries growing success down to their blend of detailed personal service and their long term partnership with Pronorm. “Even though the industry has seen some challenging times in recent years, Pronorm continues to buck the trend by investing heavily in new state of the art designs with superior finishes and a beautiful range of styles and colours. The most recent array of new products was unveiled by Pronorm in September this year and the next few months will see some fantastic additions to our already vast product offering”.
The very essence of what’s on offer from Tom and Helen is the ability to find exactly the right kitchen for you. After almost 15 years in business in the Inverclyde area, they bring a wealth of experience from the showroom to every home they work in. Affordable Luxuries philosophy is simple - they create a perfectly designed kitchen every time which is tailored to the customer’s exact requirements. They plan the most efficient use of space, the most suitable appliances mixed with their beautiful furniture, a host of worktop options and accessories with a big emphasis on value for money combined with a fully project managed
One of the main details that set Affordable Luxuries apart according to Tom is his team. “David manages the showroom and he is responsible for all design aspects of the business. He is a fantastic kitchen designer with a wealth of experience. Add in a team of great tradesman carrying out the
installation work and with me project managing the full installation we have a formula here that works exceptionally well and we have many happy customers and a business thriving on recommendations to prove it. Another big part is the fact that all our kitchens are built to order and are hand finished. Our customers dream kitchens are manufactured in Germany in a factory with £20 million pounds worth of the latest state of the art engineering with expertly trained staff to make their individual kitchens perfect. When you look at the quality of our kitchens compared to our competitors our customers can easily see the quality, depth of service and value we provide as we are also very competitive when it comes to the cost”. While their website is full of praise from satisfied customers, little will substitute for seeing the quality with your own eyes. A visit to the enhanced showroom will fire your imagination and inspire your plans. Without a doubt a new kitchen from Affordable Lux-uries will definitely add style and value to your home.

BuyinG locally Buying locally, according to research carried out by the Chambers of Commerce helps everyone. Several studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally owned business, rather than a nationally owned business, signifi cantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and farms. Every pound that leaves our area is largely lost to our community, in fact some research suggests that every single pound you spend gets recycled so well by local communities that it ends up being worth £3 to the wider community.
On the other side of the coin, it is up to the retailer to offer smart premises, welcoming service, competitive prices and these days, surely, an online presence so people can shop in the evening and pick up goods when convenient. All that encourages buying locally , which helps build a more prosperous and healthier community by strengthening the local economy with money spent being retained in the community.
The Chambers of Commerce point out that buying items made closer to home also cuts down on Clearly certain factors have to be fossil fuel use, and reduces in place. Household Tips Thomas rides Bears Way Young Thomas McKinley makes good use of the Bears Way, close to his home in Bearsden, en route to visit his cousin in Milngavie. Two-year-old Thomas rode his balance bike on the new traffic-free cycle route alongside his mum and dad, Alison and Alastair, and his younger brother George in a buggy. Alison’s sister lives in Milngavie with Thomas’s young cousin Ayla and the Bears Way provides a car-free link between the two families.

They make it a parent’s responsibility to safeguard and promote your child’s health, development and welfare and to provide direction and guidance in a manner appropriate to that child’s stage of development. In the event your child is not living with you, it is your responsibility to maintain a relationship and have direct contact with them on a regular basis. There are corresponding rights in order to allow you to fulfil these responsibilities. These include the right to regulate your child’s place of residence,

control, direct or guide the child’s upbringing, as well as to maintain contact if they are not living with you. Who then has PRRs? Unsurprisingly, mothers automatically do. However, fathers automatically do only if married to the mother at the time of birth or they are named on the birth certificate of a child registered after May 2006, when the Family Law (Scotland) Act ’06 was introduced. Unmarried fathers registered prior to this date do not have PRRs. A father can obtain PRRs with the mother’s agreement or, if agreement is not forthcoming, he can apply for a Court Order imposing them upon him.

PREPARE FOR WINTER It seems like summer has just ended, but with the forecasters predicting a severe winter with 80 snow days, here are some tips to help protect your home from the worst of the weather. 1. Get your boilers looked at: A poorly maintained boiler wastes energy and creates added costs. It also runs the risk of leaking carbon monoxide. So, it’s a good idea to service your boiler every year. 2. Bleed the radiators: Bleed your radiators. This releases any trapped air, allowing hot water to fi ll every part of your radiator and warm your home more effi ciently. 3. Guttering: As leaves start falling, gutters and drainpipes will start to get fi lled with loose foliage. Water will start to back
up and leak into the roof and down the walls of the house. Make sure your gutters are completely free from grime and dirt to minimise water blockage. 4. No entry for draughts: Check the edges of your doors and windows for draughts, and you can either seal these gaps with self-adhesive draught strips, or get one of those funny draught excluders shaped like a snake or a dog. 5. Keep your pipes warm: Burst pipes are common during winter due to rapid freezing and thawing, potentially causing massive damage. The best way to stop this from happening is to insulate your pipes warm with a foam cardigan (called lagging).

EXPERT FOOT CARE. YOUR FEET IN GOOD HANDS. YOUR HEALTH - OUR HAPPINESS Established in 2012 Foot Medic Podiatry has become widely regarded as one of Scotland’s leading foot care centres. Catering for all types of foot and lower limb problems and with a fantastic level of clinical expertise. As Glasgow’s only accredited podiatry provider, they’re best placed to treat all lower limb and foot conditions. Owner and clinical lead, Mr Ciaran Canney explains “We work tirelessly to provide our patients with the highest level of clinical care. We currently have 3 podiatrists and clinical assisting staff at our 2 clinics, one in Bearsden, the other in Hope Street. We do things differently here at Foot Medic, we don’t just treat peoples feet, we relive pain, improve quality of life and ultimately make people feel better”. It’s certainly true that we depend on our feet and most of us tend to take them for granted. The average person in a day will place hundreds of tons of force through their feet. Foot ailments can become a first sign of a more serious medical problem its always a good idea to have them checked regularly. Feet mirror your general health, so conditions like arthritis, diabetes, nerve and circulatory disorders can show their initial symptoms in your feet.
Foot Medic’s Frazer Donaldson says ‘As people take more interest in their overall health we have seen an increase in patients who will attend for help and treatment with foot and leg complaints. Seeing a podiatrist for these issues makes perfect sense. For instance, if someone feels ill, they’ll consult their doctor, if you have a dental problem, the dentist, the optician for eyes and so on. When it comes to the feet, the obvious choice is the expert in the foot and limb - the podiatrist’. As we head into winter, feet are typically hidden away in cosy boots and shoes, out of sight and out of mind. Regular foot care can not only help with painful issues but can also prevent pain and discomfort in the long run. Ciaran explains “ Because we have developed an advanced foot care clinic we are able to offer services previously unavailable to the public. We still carer for all patients. From the most basic foot problems to surgical excision, foot scanning and prescription orthotics, we offer a truly comprehensive service. Our

online booking facility makes it easy for our patients to book appointments online 24/7. Our new interactive web site ‘find my foot pain’ has been a major asset to anyone using it. describes her role in their new home shoe fitting service. “Our new shoe fitting service has proved very popular, and we’re delighted to be able to offer a truly one to one service to our patients who have difficultly getting out of the house for essential tasks like buying shoes. “I attend patients homes, offer foot measuring and consultation about the best shoe type for the individual. We return to fit the shoes along with orthotics or insoles, all in the comfort of the patients home. It really is a life line for some of our patients. Our clients are happy in the knowledge that the shoes we supply are some of the best available, fitted correctly by qualified staff”.

Liz reveals the rewards of being a leader of beavers, cubs or scouts. She says: “I am a group scout leader but I also help with the cubs at the moment where we have leader gaps. I greatly enjoy my role and it is my way of giving something back to the community and also having the chance to work with children. It’s such a satisfying volunteer post.” Leaders might be parents, local residents or school leavers, for example, who are at university of training to be in education. Liz adds: “Leaders do not need to be connected to the beavers or cubs and they do not require specifi c training. Being a leader is a lot of fun and would suit all kinds of people.” To fi nd out more contact Liz at Liz.fi ndlay@ ntlworld.com or on 0141 563 8823.

Lessons in bicycle TLC
With winter upon us, a local bike mechanic is offering cyclists a fun but informative session in bicycle maintenance, care and repairs. Milngavie-based Nick Green, who owns mobile bike repair company Hammer & Cycle, warns that winter is bad news for bicycles. He says: “It’s the worst time of year for bike components due to the wet, cold and excess salt on the roads. Now, more than ever, riders should pay attention to basic maintenance and good care
and attention.” He adds: “Even if you are about to put your bike away for the winter in the garage or shed, you should make sure it is properly cleaned and in a good state of repair for storage.” Of course, you could simply ask Hammer & Cycle to pick up your bicycle for a winter service.
Instead, why not find out how to give your bike some TLC – and save money in the long-term?
DICKSON’S GARAGE MILNGAVIE
For £5 per person, cyclists can attend the 90-minute “Caring for your Bike” session on Wednesday November 11, from 7.30pm, in the Community Room at Waitrose Milngavie.
Lower Craigton Village, Craigton Works, Milngavie
Nick will explain the fundamentals of bike care and show you how to assess whether your bike is safe to ride. Participants will also learn how to properly clean and lubricate their bikes, especially in the harsh winter months, and how to tackle quick roadside repairs. Nick says: “The aim of the class is to teach people the basics about caring for their bikes so that everything runs smoothly and without more wear and tear than is necessary. And, if the worst does happen and cyclists break down away from home, they will also know how to carry out emergency repairs.” No prior knowledge is needed to attend the Caring for Your Bike class. To book a place email nick@hammerandcycle.co.uk.

‘Surprise’ charity concert symphonies, The Surprise, and Elgar's beautiful String Serenade. Haydn's Symphony No. 94 acquired its nickname on account of one very loud and unexpected chord, which took the original audience totally off guard. However, conductor David Bruce explains that there is a great deal more to the work. He says: “Haydn said that it wasn't just to waken up the audience but to try something new. He was always experi-menting and this was just the latest of his many jokes.
