special needs club Red Star. His sport has given him so many benefits, both physically and socially.” In 2014 and 2017, Darren competed at the Special Olympics National Summer Games. He won two bronze medals in 2014 in Bath in England and in 2017 in Sheffield, also in England, he took gold in the 3000m, silver in the 4x400m relay, silver in the javelin and bronze in the 1500m.
Donna Carruthers is appealing for support for 18-year-old Darren, who will compete in two athletics events in Abu Dhabi, UAE, in March 2019. Darren, who attends Bearsden Academy, has learning difficulties and races in the T20 category. He will race in the 1500m and 3000m events at the Special Olympics: 2019 World Summer Games. Donna said that athletics means the world to her son but without financial help she will struggle to be able to afford for Darren to attend. She said: “There is no funding available for athletes going to the Special Olympics and the cost will be at least £2,500 for Darren to travel and race. On top of this I will be flying out with my sister to watch Darren in this competition.
Donna said: “Running is the thing that Darren has a talent for and he absolutely loves it. loneliness and bullying as a young child. Now his life revolves around sport.

Donna said: “There will be a disco, buffet and a raffle. Tickets are £7.50 on the door or by contacting me at pub121@ yahoo.co.uk. I really hope we can raise the funds we need.”

Amanda Mackie, who is project coordinator of the Leadership for Life Award team, said: “The benefi ts of the award are multi-faceted for those that take part. By working with others from different schools and backgrounds and a variety of project partners the award increases community cohesion and helps the young people develop a sense of social responsibility. Gold anniversary for choir
New Fencing Fencing Repairs Decking Patios Dry Stone Dyking Artificial Grass
The members of Bearsden Choir are looking forward to celebrating their golden anniversary year with a series of special gala concerts. The choir was founded in November 1968 following a performance of Handel’s Messiah at Christmas. From a modest beginning, the choir has grown to 100 members and claims its place as one of the finest choirs in Scotland. Now plans for their 50th year include three concerts, one this month, another in December and the third in May 2019. The first concert on Sunday April 29 takes place in Glasgow’s City Halls when the choir will be performing Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius. The conductor will be Andrew Nunn (main picture) with solo performances by mezzo-soprano Penelope Cousland (left), tenor Luke Sinclair (centre) and baritone Dominic Barberi (right). Carol Young, from the choir, said: “We have been busy rehearsing for The Dream of Gerontius

Scott Forrest, 18, needs to reach the top of the 3,195ft Scottish mountain nine times to equal the world’s highest peak of 29,028ft. He has given himself five days to complete the sponsored hike, which he hopes to finish on April 3. Scott won a place on the yearlong project following a selection process and will be teaching maths and physics at a secondary school in the African country. The funding will cover the costs of training, travel, medical insurance and support.
He has been selling photos, tutoring, babysitting and gardening, as well as organising events including a quiz night on April 28 at St Andrew’s Church in Bearsden and a gig night in June. Scott said: “The gig is at Stereo in Glasgow on June 1 and tickets are now on sale. This event is open to anyone aged over 16 and will mostly be 17 to 25 year olds.”

The artificial island, which has been made possible thanks to £2000 donated by local people, was put in place by volunteers on March 21.
Fiona said: “An hour or so later, we watched as the swans went up on the island and we hope they will start to nest there.”
Fiona Crosbie, who has been one of the driving forces for the new island, said: “The island, which measures 3.75 m2, has anchoring chains to which we have attached old car wheels. These will bed into the silt layer at the bottom of the pond.
A campaign was launched by Fiona and supported by Milngavie Community Development Trust and the council to replace a dilapidated island. We reported in this magazine about the risk for the swans nesting on the shore.
“Three of us waded into the pond with the island to put it in position.”

Milngavie in Bloom is calling for volunteers to help with a Big Clean Sweep this month.
A new swan island was safely installed last month at the pond next to the Community Library and Education Centre in Milngavie.

As the group headed back to the shore the swans took their first tentative look at the island.
THE PARTY EXPERTS
Fiona said: “The project has only been possible thanks to the generous and rapid response by the community, organisations and businesses. We are very grateful.”
The litter pick up in Lennox Park and across Milngavie takes place on Saturday April 21, from 10am until noon. Rona Macleod, from the Clean Sweep branch of Milngavie in Bloom, said: “We hope that local residents, youth groups and local stores will help out with our clean up of the park and other Milngavie areas. “Just turn up and wear stout shoes and gloves. We will provide equipment.” See www.milngavieinbloom. webplus.net for further information or call Rona on 0141 956 6147.

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn
This month: HOlDinG BaCK THe YearS!
School in Kirkintilloch almost a decade ago. Fhiona Mackay, Director at Scotland’s National Centre for Languages and Confucius Institute for Scotland’s Schools, said: “Clober Primary will be able to bring the learning of Mandarin and Chinese culture to a wider audience.”
In true scientific fashion there are scoring tools used to indicate how frail people over the age of 65 may be.
Head Teacher of Clober Primary, Catriona Anderson, said: “Our pupils enjoy learning about Chinese culture and are enthusiastic about sharing their language skills. As our classroom grows, we will aim to support primary schools across East Dunbartonshire to develop the teaching of Mandarin.”
A key indicator of frailty is something called “sarcopaenia”, which is muscle loss and weakness.
The immune system is important in protecting against infections, rheumatic disease and sometimes cancer. Indeed the good news for noncyclists is that evidence to date indicates that any regular exercise which pushes the body and gets you a little out of puff, will delay some effects of ageing!
However I was fascinated to read research that showed a group of cyclists, some over 80, had not lost muscle mass
We may not yet have discovered the fountain of eternal youth, but at least it’s a start!
More young people will be offered the chance to learn the Mandarin language after a new classroom was launched at a local primary school. Clober Primary School in Milngavie is now home to the facility, known as the Confucius Classroom Hub. Confucius was a Chinese teacher, editor, politician and philosopher. The Hub will be used by children across the region to study the Chinese language and culture. To mark the launch of the Confucius Classroom staff and pupils organised a programme of pupil performances, speeches and the official presentation of the Confucius Classroom plaque.

The new hub is an addition to the East Dunbartonshire Confucius Classroom Secondary Hub, which was created at St Ninian’s High
or strength as expected, and had well developed immune systems comparable to most 20 yr olds!
Across the country GPs are being encouraged to identify the most frail of their patients, to allow extra attention to be paid to planning their care, hopefully reducing the risk of falls and hospital admission and improving general well-being.

UPGRADE YOUR EYE TEST AT BLACK & LIZARS Based on Milngavie Main Street, Black & Lizars has provided a vital service to the local community for over 20 years. The team of highly qualified experts are among the best in their field. They provide a personal service, taking care to understand your eyes and ears, needs and lifestyle to find the best and more affordable solution for you.
degeneration (AMD), Glaucoma and retinal tears/detachments. As the only place in the body where blood vessels can be seen directly, the retina can be a window on your overall health. Optomap can also detect underlying health conditions that may go unnoticed by a routine eye test, including; heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, strokes and some cancers.
As well as offering eye and hearing tests, glasses, contact lenses and hearing aids, the practice has invested in the latest technology such as Optomap which can scan five times more of your retina than traditional eye exams. Optomap takes ultrawide digital images of the back of your eye and this high-resolution image allows your optometrist to examine more than 80% of your retina.
Rebecca Houston, Practice Manager and her team pride themselves on clinical excellence and provide the highest levels of patient care. She says: “NHS eye exams at Black & Lizars are free, however we encourage our patients to take a more thorough approach and recommend they upgrade to an enhanced eye exam, which includes an Optomap scan for only £30.”
The technology provides greater detail of eye health as it scans a larger area, and can help diagnose conditions like age-related macular
Another innovation offered by Black & Lizars in Milngavie is Ortho-K contact lenses, a revolutionary product that frees the wearer from
glasses or lenses during the day. Ortho-K lenses are worn as you sleep and work by re-shaping the cornea, correcting your prescription for the day. Professional rugby players from Glasgow Warriors have already utilised Ortho-K lenses to allow them to play without worrying about contact lenses, but the product is also particularly well-suited for children. Parents can have peace of mind, supervising lens handling at home and sending children to school knowing they’ll have clear vision all day. To book an enhanced eye exam or to find out more about advanced products like Ortho-K lenses, please visit: blackandlizars.com.

renovations After a winter of hibernation, a spring clean of homes and gardens will be on the cards for many Scots. Traditionally, now is the time when home owners plan DIY projects and think about interior and exterior revamps. First on the list of tasks should be a checkup of the property’s exterior to make sure it has survived the effects of snow,
rain, ice and wind during the chillier months. Issues to look out for include damaged brickwork, cracked render or chimneys, blocked drains, broken guttering and downpipes, rotten woodwork and fallen garden fences. If you can’t see the roof from ground level, go into the attic or upstairs rooms

or remodel the attic into new accommodation. These largerscale projects will need to be planned and assessed for cost but they could add value to your property in the long-term. Your garden never looks its best just after winter. The plants and flowers will need a little sunshine to start their full display but meanwhile you can get on with a general tidy up. Remove fallen tree branches and general debris from the grass and beds. Other jobs include weeding and renewing mulches on beds; planting seeds and pruning plants. Also look at potted plants to see if they might benefit from re-potting. Larger garden projects might include tree surgery, landscaping, re-turfi ng the

If you have stored garden furniture in the shed, it’s time to bring it out. Wooden furniture might need to be repainted, varnished or oiled. If it’s plastic, it will need a thorough clean and wash. Alternatively, why not treat your home to a new set of furniture, as well as a barbecue, so you can enjoy your outside space more this summer? Spring is a popular time for interior renovations, too. As the sun shines a brighter light on walls, carpets and fittings, many home owners realise there is a need for improvements.

This month: Standing up to Falls Falls are the number one reason older people are taken to the hospital. Anyone can have a fall, but older people are more vulnerable and likely to fall, especially if they have a longterm health condition. Not surprisingly most falls happen at home, however there are some simple precautions you can take to prevent falls at home: • Keeping your home tidy with clear pathways and avoiding loose floor coverings such as rugs
• High specification
late model vans ready for your adventure
• Taking extra caution when out and about – stay to well lit pathways
• Custom conversions
If you have fallen: • Keep calm • If you're not hurt and you feel strong enough to get up, roll onto your hands and knees and look for a stable piece of furniture, such as a chair or bed. Hold on to the furniture with both hands to support yourself and slowly get up.

• If you're hurt or unable to get up, try to get someone's attention, use your aid call button or if possible, crawl to a telephone and dial 999 to request an ambulance.

Tickets have gone on sale for the fourth outing of the popular MugStock festival, which promises a host of “music and merriment”. MugStock expects to welcome more than 150 acts across seven stages at the weekend event from Friday July 27 to Monday July 30 at Mugdock Country Park. The line-up is already looking exciting with many favourites returning, as well as new acts debuting. They include a winner of the Scottish Alternative Music Awards Best Live Act, Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5; eclectic folk rock group Tide Lines; grunge soul music band Girobabies; and Supa & Da Kryptonites, which will be back for the fourth time.
Other acts confirmed are X-Factor finalist Emily Middlemas, from Glasgow and young singer Katee Kross, of Bishopbriggs. Alan Govan, founder of MugStock, says: “The acts so far announced reinforce MugStock's commitment to musical diversity and emerging talent.” MugStock has been praised for its atmosphere and a varied and high quality entertainment for a wide range of ages. As well as musical attractions there will be theatre, comedy, spoken word, roaming performers, fire
shows, art and “extraordinary occurrences”. Festival goers can expect reasonably priced street food, as well as Scottish beer and Prosecco on tap. Alan adds: “We are also proud of the acclaim of having the cleanest toilets at a festival.” Tickets, across a range of purchase options, will be sold on a sliding scale of prices that will increase as it gets closer to the event. Over 60s and teenagers are half price and kids aged 12 and under are free. There will be a choice of three camp-sites for festival goers, including one for families. New for 2018 are free showers for campers. See mugstock.org for details.

A one-off gig for charity has turned into a successful programme of regular performances for a group of talented local musicians.
Members of the West of Scotland Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers are looking forward to a series of upcoming talks
The processes of natural dyeing and felting promise to offer a fascinating all-day workshop this month at a local crafts group. The West of Scotland Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers meets regularly in Milngavie and this month’s talk – on April 14 – will be by Dr Dan Coughlan, from Paisley Museum, on the subject of The Paisley Shawl Loom and Paisley weaving. The group’s AGM takes place the following month, on May 12. The aim of the guild, which was founded almost 40 years ago, is to promote traditional crafts. Ever since, they have met on the second Saturday of each month, from September to May,
in Milngavie Community Library and Education Centre. The meetings include a variety of speakers and workshops and take place over a morning or afternoon session. The guild also has informal meetings in the Waitrose Milngavie Community Room one Friday afternoon each month to showcase member projects. Jean Mabon, from the West of Scotland Guild, said: “If anyone wants to learn a new skill we would be delighted to welcome them to our meetings.
TRANSFORMATIONS
“People can learn to make their own individual yarn and maybe move on to weaving to use up a stash that lurks in cupboards. “In fact, our members’ interests cover a variety of textiles, including embroiderers, knitters, felt makers, quilters and braiders so there is plenty to fi nd out about.” The first visit to a guild meeting or workshop is free. An annual subscription is £30. To find out more see www. weave-spin-dye-glasgow.org. uk or “westofscotlandguild”. Potential members can also email: weavers.in.glasgow@ gmail.com

Band spokesperson Al Mckee, of Bearsden, said: “Many years ago my wife Diane won a stars in your eyes contest, organised by a playgroup in Bearsden, by performing as Debbie Harry. I guess that is where the idea for a Blondie tribute band came from originally.
Here’s what some of our customers had to say about our work: “We had our shower room completely refurbished and are delighted with the finished product. We would definitely use them again.” Mr and Mrs Quibell (Shandon)

The tribute band MacBlondie was formed by a longstanding four-piece Bearsden group, The Kay Family, for a charity function two years ago. At that time, they billed themselves “The Kay Family performing Blondie” and brought in an extra guitarist to provide a bigger sound.
It was important to me to have someone I could trust in my home when I was at work. The guys just got on with things, dealt with the unexpected when it arose and always left my house tidy and clean for me to come home to. What more could you want?” Dr. Jennifer Brown (Craigton)

“Then we got together to do the charity gig and we discovered that we loved doing the cover versions of Blondie. From there we decided to make the band a permanent feature. “Being Scottish we added Mac to the original band's name to give us a Celtic slant.” MacBlondie comprises Al on bass, vocalist Diane, guitarists, father and son Andy and Liam Gordon, also from Bearsden, and drummer Mark Cassidy from Ayrshire. A team of primary school pupils from Milngavie has won through to a national Euroquiz final. The four P6 pupils from Milngavie Primary School won the East Dunbartonshire heat of Euroquiz last month. They were quizzed on topics relating to Europe, including history, geography, sport and culture. A team from Killermont Primary in Bearsden came second after a very close finish. A total of 22 schools in the region competed. The Milngavie Primary team will now represent East Dunbartonshire at the national final in May at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh.
An electrical waste recycling trial project, which included collections in local newsagents, has reported “promising” early results. The WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) collection and recycling trial was carried out by a research team at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh for three months to January 2018. Residents in Milngavie and Bearsden, as well as Drumchapel, Giffnock and Clarkston, were encouraged to drop off their unwanted items at 12 newsagent collection points. Milngavie participant Pauline McCabe was keen to exercise after a weight loss plan that saw her shed 3.5st. She said: “I thought a jog group would be a good way to start to increase my exercise and I am really pleased I joined Jog Scotland Milngavie. The runners and the leader motivated each other and I have made massive progress with my running.â€? Jog Scotland Milngavie are delighted to have welcomed over 20 new joggers to their ranks
Running group leader Alison Paterson is delighted by the positive response and progress of more than 20 newbie joggers. Alison decided to launch the JogScotland Milngavie 10-week beginners’ jogging course – from couch to 5k – in January to encourage and motivate people to run further. The jog leader said: “After listening to many friends talking about trying to stick to the
C25K programme, the common diffi culty was staying motivated. They said that running alone made it too easy to give up. “I wanted to create a course where everyone had the same programme, a designated day and time in the week to run and a group of people around them
Heather Hart, also of Milngavie, spotted an advert in this magazine for the beginners’ course. She said: “I have really enjoyed the great team spirit and the other participants who have encouraged me. The next step for the new runners is to join the main JogScotland Milngavie group with confidence. Alison said: “Seeing how everyone has risen to the challenge and supported each other has been incredibly inspiring. See JogScotland Milngavie on Facebook.

Scientists have concluded that the chicken came first not the egg, because the protein which makes egg shells is only produced by hens.
WET GRIP Scientists have the answer to why fingers shrivel up like an old prune when we soak in the bath. Tests confirmed that wrinkly fingers improve our grip on wet or submerged objects, working to channel away the water like the rain treads in car tyres.
