TRIO’S AMBITIOUS TRIG RUN FOR MRT for charting the lay of the land. Modern technologies, such as GPS, mean the traditional trig pillar is generally not necessary any more but many thousands of trig pillars still remain dotted across rural areas and on hills and mountains. Trig bagging is a popular hobby and sees walkers and runners ticking off the trigs that they reach.

Three runners aim to reach all 19 trig points covered by the Lomond Mountain Rescue Team, in only 24 hours

A local runner is one of a trio that will be taking on an extraordinary challenge to raise awareness of an emergency service this month.

Jamie, as well as Jenny Allen, of Aberfoyle, and Alex Berry, of Whiteinch, will need to cover 60 miles on foot over rough and boggy land, as well as a total ascent of 16,404ft. The trio hope to finish their Trig Point Challenge in an incredible 24 hours on the weekend of April 6 and 7.

Money raised through sponsorship and donations will go to Lomond MRT, which is one of the busiest volunteer rescue teams in Scotland. The trig points – or triangulation stations – form part of a huge mapping project, the Retriangulation of Great Britain, undertaken by Ordnance Survey (OS) in the early 20th century. More than 6500 concrete pillars were installed across the UK countryside from 1936. The pillars allowed surveyors to attach theodolite equipment

Jamie, whose partner Andy Taylor is a member of Lomond MRT, said: “We thought it would be a great idea to visit all the trigs in the Lomond MRT area in one big outing. It will be a huge challenge though because of the distance and because of the tough terrain.

Jamie, Jenny and Alex take a time out from training

A new campaign has been launched at a Milngavie pond to raise awareness of the correct way to feed the ducks and swans. Milngavie Community Development Trust (MCDT) is working in collaboration with East Dunbartonshire Council and the TimeOut Club to encourage people to leave the bread at home and adopt a safer approach to bird feeding at the Community Education Centre Pond. MCDT has produced a leaflet explaining the correct options for feeding the birds, which includes common household vegetable scraps and bird feed. In addition, bags of swan and duck food will now be available free of charge at the CE Centre pond. The campaign has been launched for a variety of reasons. Fiona

ARTIFICIAL GRASS SPECIALISTS CY Turf Supply and install a full range of quality Artificial Grass, from domestic to commercial projects along with other landscaping services

Crosbie, of MCDT, said: “Research shows that if ducks and swans eat a lot of bread it interferes with their digestion process. It can prevent the absorption of essential nutrients and, worse still, for ducklings, it can result in a deformity called angel wing, which means they can’t fly.” Fiona points out that bread also encourages the growth of blue green algae in the pond, a problem that reached severe levels last summer. She added: “Algae can cause neurological damage in birds and last year several ducks died following seizures. One of two

cygnets had to be removed when it started to show symptoms, too.” While a new fountain pump has helped with the algae, MCDT is calling for the public to be aware of the problems caused by bread. The Trust continues to fund raise for a Pond Edge Naturalisation Project and donations can be made at www.justgiving/milngaviedt or in tins around the village. Planting at the pond edge will not only impact on biodiversity and water quality but also greatly enhance the look of the pond. Also see info652106.wixsite.com/ mcdt.

CREATING HEALTHY HABITS Milngavie is hosting an inaugural Healthy Habits event this month with a wide range of things to do and try for all the family.

Local Milngavie traders, who fund the event through their annual BID levy, will set up stalls in the Main Street, all with a healthy habits theme. Graeme added: “Without the traders this event could not happen. All the events that we have arranged over the last five years have been paid for by local business owners.

Taking place on April 27 from noon to 4pm, the free event, which is organised by Milngavie BID, will promote activities on a theme of healthy and active living.

“We hope this event will get lots of people out and about into Milngavie – and remind them what a nice place we have here. We need the public to support local businesses by using their High Street more often.”

The aim is to encourage families to try new sports and activities, such as climbing and bungee running, as well as a football shoot out. There will be a blow up assault course in the main precinct and a bouncy castle and slide in Tesco car park. Two more activities include smoothie-making bikes at the plinth and a giant Connect 4 game. In the Douglas Street car park, the Clan Stunts will perform BMX shows throughout the day. Global Radio will also entertain. Graeme Ross, chair of Milngavie BID, said: “Healthy

Habits will be a fun packed day in Milngavie and free for all the family. There will be plenty of activities for all to try. We hope this event will become an annual date in the diary.”

Has Your Double Glazing Steamed Up?

If any local community groups have an activity that they believe is relevant to the Healthy Habits event, they are encouraged to get in contact with the Milngavie BID team. The aim is to showcase as many activities and ideas as possible on the day. See milngaviebid.com

YEARS FOR A REASON

Jayne Daly Mortgage Advisor

Many borrowers are now drifting away from the traditional 2-year fixed term rate deals as they feel that they won’t provide them with enough security during these unpredictable times. If all this speculation concerns you, you could consider re-mortgaging and moving to a longer term fixed-rate mortgage.

Fixed rate mortgages are not suitable for everyone. If your circumstances are likely to change in the short term, careful consideration should be taken before making a final decision as these deals often come with early repayment charges. If interest rates were to fall after Brexit, you could find yourself paying more than you need to. If you want to take advantage of any potential rate reductions and if you are willing to take the risk should rates go up, then it may be worthwhile considering a tracker rate. If you are looking for mortgage advice that you can trust, call us today on 0141 956 4088 / 0800 011 2322 or visit us at www.themortgageadviceservice.co.uk

A group of young musicians from Bearsden was delighted to be able to donate £450 to their chosen animal welfare charity. The money was raised at the 19th Annual Bearsden Young Fiddlers Concert late last year – and handed over to The Dogs Trust by some of the youngsters at a recent Open Day event. Barbara MacLeod, the secretary, said: “Every year, at the beginning of our 10week season, the children put forward, and then vote on, a

charity to support. This year it was The Dogs Trust. “The £450 mainly came from the final concert raffle, which raised £404. The parents organise this and our audience of parents and friends are always very generous in their support. We were able to top up our donation because we played for two St Andrew’s Night events as well.”

The Bearsden Young Fiddlers were formed in 2000 by conductor Angela Franchi. The group comprises young musicians with an interest in playing traditional Scottish music. It is the Junior Section of the Bearsden Fiddlers. The age range of musicians is 10 to 16 and the orchestra includes violin, accordion and guitar players. They meet on Sunday afternoons for two hours of practice at Cairns Church. For more information contact Barbara MacLeod on tel: 0141 569 7356 and see: www.bearsdenfiddlers.co.uk.

April 2019 | What's Up Doc?

IS YOUR BUSINESS A WINNER? Nominations are being invited for the East Dunbartonshire Business Awards 2019. The awards aim to highlight businesses, entrepreneurs and enterprises “putting the pedal to the metal” to help to power jobs and investment. There are nine categories including Start-Up Business, Established/Growth Business, Digital Innovation, Independent Retail Business, Hospitality, Leisure & Tourism, Service Provider, Social Enterprise, Community Champion and EcoFriendly Business. In addition, the judging panel, including representatives from the local economic community and the Council, will select an overall Business of the Year. A form is available for each category at www. eastdunbarton.gov.uk/ business/business-awards-2019 and nominations must be sent in by 5pm on April 19.

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: LEARN TO LOVE YOUR LIVER… Some diseases hit you between the eyes, like heart attacks and strokes, but others creep up slowly and silently over years, like fatty liver disease. The first we often know about this is when blood tests are abnormal. You may be told your liver enzymes are raised, and the first question is about alcohol intake. If tests remain abnormal after reducing this (if necessary) then an ultrasound scan might show “fatty liver”. This can lead to scarring and cirrhosis over time, or rarely even liver failure. Although alcohol can be blamed, there are many other causes

including viruses, antibodies, copper or iron overload, metabolic problems, and obesity. If a cause is identified, drug treatments or lifestyle changes may help. Otherwise a blood test once or twice a year is advised to give warning of any worsening, as it can remain stable. The liver weighs 1.5kg, its jobs including removing toxins and drugs from the body, metabolising fat, protein and sugars as well as making essential proteins, so it’s definitely worth looking after. Prevention is best, and healthy living with regular exercise, sensible drinking limits and keeping trim, will protect your liver as well as your heart!

The 98th Girls Brigade, based in Bearsden held a fund-raising dinner last month in aid of Social Bite

A kind-hearted Girls Brigade has raised hundreds of pounds for a Scottish charity that is on a mission to end homelessness. The 98th Girls Brigade, which is based in Bearsden, held a dinner in aid of Social Bite at Baljaffray Parish Church last month. Together with a professional chef, the girls prepared, cooked and plated up a three-course Scottish themed dinner for family, friends and members of the church. They also organised a raffle and games. In total, more than ÂŁ500 was collected for the social enterprise that “aims to build a collaborative movement to end homelessnessâ€?.

Last year, the girls also took part in Social Bite’s Wee Sleep Out, a programme that was part of Scotland’s Year of Young People 2018 and raised awareness of homelessness. Jennifer Major, the company captain, said: “I’m very proud of the achievement of the girls and staff in raising such a fantastic amount for Social Bite. In hosting the dinner, our members have gained valuable life skills and they are raising awareness of the homeless situation here in Glasgow.

Alzheimer’s Scotland The girls busy preparing dinner

Dr Alice Thompson, co-founder and director of Social Bite, said she was impressed with the commitment of the company. She added: “These young people are an example to all of us of selessness, commitment and compassion‌as we work together, towards a country without poverty.â€? The girls chose Social Bite for their current study theme of “world changersâ€?. The company now hopes to raise even more funds – towards a grand total of ÂŁ800 – through a crowdfunding campaign. First up, before your spring clean begins, go through your wardrobes, cupboards, drawers, boxes and units and donate all your unwanted electronics, housewares and used clothing to charity. Getting rid of these unwanted items will make your home feel larger, lighter and more comfortable.

If this is the year you finally commit to a kitchen makeover, a new boiler, new flooring or furniture or even an extension or conversion, do so with the help of a professional tradesman. They have the expertise.

Spring Clean Goals Wipe down walls, windows and floors; polish and dust light fittings and furniture; clear your kitchen worktops and bathroom shelves. Focus on one room at a time, scheduling different rooms for different days and make sure you share these activities with your family.

Refresh Interior Rooms Refresh a room with a new colour or paint, a new carpet or new curtains and look to reorganise your furniture. When searching for that perfect colour, remember that paint often dries darker or brighter than the swatches. Sample on a piece of cardboard or a section of wall first to ensure you love the colour. Rearrange or reframe any artwork to complete the fresh look.

Home and Garden Feature | April 2019 Deep Down and Dirty

Keep Your Gutters Clear

Perfect Outdoor Space

Vacuuming your carpets is likely a biweekly, if not weekly, activity in every home. However, your carpets deserve a quality cleaning once a year to eliminate deep-down dust, dirt, and food particle buildup. Hire a professional or rent or buy a professional cleaning machine designed for home use.

When you consider that your roof's gutters deal with thousands of gallons of rain fall every year, you can see why they deserve an inspection at least twice a year. Clean and repair gutters and down pipes every spring before the Scottish summer monsoons begin.

This spring, get the most out of your garden by giving it what it needs. Maintaining your garden requires work: mowing, trimming, weeding, fertilising, pruning etc. If you'd rather leave the job up to someone else, consider hiring a gardening service.

Power the Grime Away

Dreaming of Decking

Power washing your driveway, paved walkways or decking is always a great way of bringing them back to their best, but also look to have your home's exterior and windows powerwashed. This will also prevent the growth of mold and mildew that feed on grime. If you are unsure if your home can handle the pressure, speak to, or hire, a professional to do the work.

Nothing says outdoor entertaining like a decking area designed to match your home and lifestyle. Because of their expertise and experience, professional designers can offer fresh ideas and anticipate planning restrictions. Planning new or redesigned decking begins with imagining everything you want the space to be. Even if your ideas seem farfetched, don't discard them. Who knows? A design professional might make them a reality.

Brighten Your Exterior Spring is the perfect time to give the exterior of your home a fresh paint job. The average exterior paint job lasts 10 years, so make sure it's done right. Changing your colour scheme can take your house from forgettable to trafficstopping. If you feel your house doesn't require a full painting, consider a touch-up to window frames and sills and any other external features.

A new event that will showcase Scottish gin and produce launches this month in Milngavie. GINDEPENDENT takes place at FPizza on April 13 from 7pm to 9.30pm. It will include tastings, masterclasses, demonstrations and a live DJ. The headlining vendor is Kinrara, which is distilled in the Cairngorms. It is one of Scotland’s newest micro distilleries and there will be a masterclass on the gin, as well as the chance to purchase bottles to take home. Other vendors include Pickerings Gin and The Braw Wee Emporium. Tickets for the event, which is organised by Fly High Events, cost £20. The festival takes place in a new event space at FPizza. See gindependentfest.wixsite.com/event

The breakdown of a marriage and subsequent legal process of divorce can be an emotionally difficult time. Fortunately, in Scotland we have the benefit of the Simplified Divorce Procedure. This is also often referred to as the ’Do It Yourself’ divorce and can only be used in the appropriate circumstances. The only ground for divorce in Scotland is the irretrievable breakdown of the marriage and this can be established in different ways. For the purpose of a simplified divorce, it can be established on the basis that you have been separated for one year and your spouse consents to the divorce, there have been two years of separation or that either you or your spouse have been issued

an interim gender recognition certificate. There must not be any children of the marriage under the age of 16 and there can be no outstanding financial matters. Any financial arrangements can be agreed before applying for divorce by way of a Minute of Agreement. The benefits of using this procedure are that parties do not require to attend court and it is cost effective. The fee for lodging an application with the court is currently £123 and there can be a fee exemption for those on certain benefits. Further information can be found on the Scottish Courts website www.scotcourts.gov.uk or you can consult your solicitor for advice.

JOIN MUNRO CENTENARY PROJECT Senior Savvy with Suhail Rehman This month:

STAY NOURISHED’ – HEALTHY EATING IN OLDER AGE PART 3

THE 10 WARNING SIGNS That Someone may be affected by poor diet

Keen walkers are invited to join a project to celebrate the centenary of the death of Sir Hugh Munro. “The Munro Table” will remember Munro, who died in 1919, and is credited with creating the UK’s most famous lists of mountain summits. The Scot identified the Scottish mountains with a summit of more than 3000ft. These 282 mountains are known as the Munros. Now The Munro Table project is calling for walkers, runners and climbers to make a special trip to the Munros. Over the next year, each of these Munro baggers will record their summit by writing an account and taking a photograph or creating an artwork at the top.

Eddie Summerton, the creator of the project, said: “The aim is to collect together all the accounts, photographs and artworks from each summit to form an archival boxed set of Munro Table publications.” Eddie envisages that the Munro baggers will write about a variety of experiences, such as weather and wildlife, as they hike their Munro.

1 Depression and emotional wellbeing: Depression and a level of stress can cause a change in appetite. Raise awareness with a doctor if needed. 2 Sudden weight fluctuation: Warning signs include ill-fitting clothes and jewellery. 3 Poor concentration, tiredness, lacking energy: The body is not getting enough nutrients to fuel the body. 4 Slow recovery process: A lack of vitamins and nutrients will slow down the recovery and healing process.

7 Difficulty keeping warm: Reduced muscle and tissue mass lowers ability to regulate body temperature. 8 Persistent Bowel problems: Malnutrition can irritate the stomach and lining of the intestine, causing constipation, nausea and diarrhoea. 9 More than 3 medications: Medications can influence both appetite and weight.

In due course, The Munro Table will be displayed in a variety of locations such as galleries, educational venues and at festivals, for others to see.

5 Skin tone and nails: A healthy diet will show bright, well hydrated skin and healthy nails.

Bearsden Bowling Club, which this year celebrates its 140th anniversary, has a free four-week trial offer, as well as a half-price membership for the first year. for a variety of reasons. It is a good form of exercise and it can be enjoyed by people with different fitness levels. “The sport is a good way to meet new people in the local area as well as people from further afield when we take part in competitions. “Our bowling club has a busy social programme as well and many members say how much they value this. Bearsden Bowling Club was founded in 1879 with 16 members and has grown to be

a thriving club, however they are always keen to welcome new people. Chris said: “We are keen to welcome new members to our club and we hope they will take up our free trial offer. A Bearsden podiatrist is delighted to have triumphed in a regional round of Scotland’s Business Awards. Ciaran Canney (pictured 2nd right), the director, said: “We were totally shocked to be announced the winner.” The awards are nominated by the public. Businesses then face a lengthy interview where their ethos, methods and procedures are scrutinised. Ciaran said: “We also survived a secret shopper and online presence testing, as well as a patient feedback assessment.

Ciaran believes it is the team who work at Foot Medic, at Tribune Court, Roman Road, that has helped to grow a successful business. He said: “We're constantly aiming to break boundaries of traditional podiatry paradigms and we really give our patients an experience they will remember.

“We had some great competition from some other remarkable businesses.

PARK UP,

SWITCH OFF

An initiative has been launched to make drivers aware of the impact of idling engines.

They are also known to contribute to asthma, other lung complaints and heart disease.

The East Dunbartonshire Council campaign is highlighting the potential for a fine of £20 if a vehicle has an engine running unnecessarily.

In addition, an idling engine wastes fuel, which creates extra costs for drivers.

Exhaust fumes from engines left running while cars are stationary causes air pollution.

Best Baby/ Toddler Class Loved By Parents Awards 2018

The Royal College of Physicians estimate 40,000 deaths a year in the UK are linked to air pollution, with engine idling contributing to this.

Focus on Eyes WATERY EYE Watering from the eyes can result from various causes. The most common is reflex watering due to irritation in the eye. This may be caused by the tear film breaking up quickly resulting in dry spots which, when recognised by the eye, produces even more tears to try and overcome the dryness. Patients are sometimes prescribed artificial tear drops to reduce and counter this. Other causes of reflex watering include an infection or inflammation of the eyelids or the surface of the eye, an allergic reaction, a foreign body in the eye, scratches on the front window of the eye (cornea), the eyelid turning in (entropion) or out (ectropion)

and eyelashes rubbing on the surface of the eye. Watering of the eye can also be caused by obstruction in the tear drainage system. This can occur due to inflammation or, more commonly, without any specific reason. This often occurs in one eye and causes it to water more or less constantly, both outdoors and indoors. If the watering in your eye is troublesome, you should see an optometrist who may be able to pinpoint the likely cause of the symptoms. He/she may refer you to an eye Consultant who will do some tests to check the cause of watering and advise treatment.

A prize-winning string quartet will entertain at Milngavie Music Club's next concert this month. Consone String Quartet (pictured) is an up-and-coming young ensemble from London that specialises in playing the music of the 18th and 19th centuries.

A local cricket club is hoping to recruit more members as the new season opens. Milngavie Cricket Club, which was founded 14 years ago, is keen to build on last year’s successful season.

They are looking for players of all abilities aged over 16.

Formed originally as a social team called The Old Talbotians, the renamed club has enjoyed competing as part of Stirlingshire midweek league for the past 10 years.

The club practises indoors at West of Scotland Cricket Club, Hamilton Crescent, in Partick, Glasgow, on Mondays at 9pm. Richard McKinlay, from Milngavie Cricket Club, said: “We would be delighted to welcome new players to our club this season. “We also have a long-term plan to develop the club to include juniors and ladies.” Milngavie Cricket Club is hoping to find a permanent home

Once player numbers have increased, the club hopes to enter the Glasgow weekend league. If you are interested in becoming a member or helping with the club, contact Richard on 07810 641574 or email milngaviecc19@ gmail.com. A new website will be launched soon.

The programme will also include two less well-known pieces by Italian composer Boccherini. Tickets are available from The Iron Chef in Milngavie, at the door, or call 0141 942 3102. The cost is £13, students £5 and school pupils free. See www.milngaviemusic.org.
