The gala day, on Saturday September 2, will follow tradition by starting with the one-mile fun run at 11.30am from Wheatfield road. (Registration is at 11am.) The run will be followed by a musical parade that leads to Westerton Community Hall. Then, from 12:30pm, the Gala Day activities will commence with fun and games for all ages taking place in the community hall, library, tennis club, bowling
club, brownie hut and on the field behind the hall. Visitors can look forward to “fantastic beasts”, a wand shop, a magician, Nerf Wars, various entertainment acts, Infl atable City, archery, sweets stalls and a craft fair. The Great Gala Bake Off will be back and there will be a range of refreshments being served in the tearoom, bar area and barbecue area.
to have fun and celebrate local community life. The event is run by volunteers and we hope as many people as possible will come along to create another successful local community event.” Entry to the fun run is free. Wristbands for the main event cost £5, or £3 for children aged three and under. Babies are free. You can buy wristbands at the run registration or at Westerton Community Hall. Don't forget to bring your Muggle money as you might want to buy food, drinks and craft items and some special activities have a cost.

A Bearsden karate club is delighted to announce that four young members have each been awarded their junior black belts. Seventeen-year-old Euan Chalmers, Jamie Cook and Patrick Wallace, who are both 14, and Matthew Downie, 11, earned their prestigious accolades at a recent grading. They are all members of Tei Karate, which meets twice weekly at Allander Leisure Centre in Bearsden.
One of the club founders and instructors, Peter Galbraith (3rd Dan), said: “The four lads have worked very hard over the last year and were given the opportunity to attend the grading. We are delighted that they have earned their junior black belts.
Peter said: “Karate is a great sport for keeping fi t and also for discipline and self-confi dence. The sport operates in a structured environment and we fi nd that many youngsters thrive with the focus on routine and respect for each other. “The belt system also offers goals and rewards for hard work and we encourage members to get involved if they want to. business networK launch Almost 40 women came together at Bearsden Community Hub last month for a new Women in Business Networking Seminar. Organised by Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce, and supported by Business Gateway and RBS (Royal Bank of Scotland), the free event marked the launch of a Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce Women in Business programme. Forthcoming events, most likely every quarter, will be announced and are aimed at women in business and those thinking about going into business in the region. The session on July 4 was hosted by Bearsden's social media expert, Gillian Dick, and included
a presentation by Scottish businesswoman, Marianne Meehan, of Alterity, a company that enables the development of pragmatic management education, as well as consulting services. Marianne offered her insight into women in business, highlighting her successful career across a range of sectors. She also shared some of the practical techniques she utilises as a business transformation leader. The seminar offered an opportunity for the attendees
to network and as the women exchanged information and listened to other people’s business stories they were treated to a free lunch spread by Café Crème Bakery, of Bearsden. Free coffee was offered by Nespresso Business Solutions. A draw of everyone’s business cards saw one delegate win a Chamber of Commerce membership and another taking home a “Scone in a Box”. For more details about the new networking series and for information about Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce, admin@ dunbartonshirechamber.co.uk or 0141 280 0272.

Getting the balance right
Local Business | August 2017
Catriona Whyte
Business Gateway services are delivered across Scotland and are managed by the local authority in each area. Within East Dunbartonshire the services are available to both residents planning on setting up a business and existing companies based here. All services are free and include practical business advice, training events on a variety of topics and, when appropriate, access to grant and loan funding throughout the enterprise network, including a grant of £300 for new start-up businesses in the area. For many people, returning to work after maternity leave or a career break is a daunting prospect. There are so many things to consider, such as whether to resume a previous career or to start something new that could possibly fit in better with family life. Catriona Whyte practiced as a nurse for eighteen years before the birth of her daughter, after which she took a career break. When school was on the horizon for her daughter, Catriona took the decision not to return to nursing but instead channel the skills she’d acquired as a nurse into an alternative career path in complementary therapy. After much consideration and research, Catriona decided to train as a reiki practitioner and set up her own business. “It was a huge step for me to take as I’d always been employed and worked as part of a team. I didn’t know anybody who either ran their own business or offered complementary therapies.” Catriona also decided to base her business in the family home in Milngavie and so Reiki with Catriona Whyte was set up in 2016.
“Being able to run my business from home has many advantages, as I am able to work around my family’s needs whilst fulfilling my desire to pursue a career I’m passionate about as well as generating an income with smaller operating costs. “There are many benefits to running my own business that regular employment usually can’t offer,” explains Catriona, “This includes being able to work around the challenges of family life, being my own boss and I’m now aware of the huge improvement in my own confidence to take opportunities and network to encourage new business.” Whilst Catriona has not returned to her original career, there are many similarities between nursing and her new profession. She added: “The rewards are not dissimilar to nursing as I often see a huge difference in clients who attend the reiki sessions, so I’m delighted that I’ve not completely moved away from the career I initially pursued and loved.” Catriona’s advice to anyone considering setting up their own business after a career break is to be patient. “If you have a real passion, keep going but you need to be prepared for it taking time to generate the sales you aspire to make. Definitely use the Business Gateway services for the many different forms of support, including business advice, practical help with social media and the various training events.”
Are you inspired by Catriona and would like to find out how Business Gateway can help you achieve your dream of setting up your own business after a career break? Join us at our event on Wednesday 6 September in Boclair House Hotel, Bearsden from 9.30am until 12.30pm to explore your options. d T s step into a reading walK CRAYON MARKS
EDCT Learning and Development Officer Eryl Morris said: “We decided to run four walks across East Dunbartonshire and Milngavie is one of them.
Anybody with a toddler likely has had to remove artwork from the walls. Try making a paste with baking soda and warm water, and then gently scrubbing with a non-abrasive sponge. This should remove crayon without damaging paint.
#1
CLEAN COFFEE GRINDER #2 Fill the grinder with rice and turn it on for about 30 seconds. The rice absorbs anything left in the grinder and helps clear it out when you empty the ground rice into the bin.
“We know that a lot of our council-run reading groups take a break over the summer and we felt that the Reading Walks would be a great way for people to continue to enjoy reading, while adding in a gentle walk.
If you enjoy walking and reading you will be delighted to hear about a free activity taking place in Milngavie this month. Andy Lynch, East Dunbartonshire's W.A.L.K. Offi cer, will be leading a “Reading Walk from the town’s library on Allander Road on Monday August 28 at noon. The walk, organised by East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture Trust, is described as “gentle and will take around half an hour.
Along the way there will be readings of extracts from poetry and novels on a theme, which walkers will be invited to discuss as they go. Refreshments will be provided in the library at the end of the activity and participants are invited to continue their discussions about the theme of the walk.
“Ending the walks back at our libraries with refreshments helps to cement the feeling of well-being from the walk and encourages more discussion around books and reading. Walkers are recommended to wear appropriate clothing and footwear. It’s also a good idea to book the walk early because there are limited places. August 2017 | What's Up Doc?
‘RE-USE DON’T BIN’ SCHEME
What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn This month:
An East Dunbartonshire Council initiative has diverted more than 100 special uplift requests for bulky items to local charities rather than landfill. The new pro-active approach connects people with household items to pass on to local charities and social enterprises via Zero Waste Scotland’s Re-use Line. This saves them ending up in landfill facilities. Thomas Glen, Depute Chief Executive – Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets, said: “The council recognises that everything we use and throw away is a resource. We have taken a new approach in moving away from landfi ll dependency. “Anything that helps to reduce the amount of waste heading to landfi ll is great news as it reduces
costs and the damaging effects to the environment. Householders are asked to contact Zero Waste Scotland’s Re-use Line, which collects for free, if they have items in good condition, including furniture and soft furnishings. Sofas and armchairs need to have fire-regulation labels attached, and electrical items, such as washing machines, fridges and cookers, should be in good working order. You can call 0800 0665 820 between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, or donate online at www.reusephoneline.com

Most people know that chest pain can be a warning sign for heart attacks. However there are many people out there who still delay acting upon it when it happens to them. Classical signs of a heart attack include central crushing chest pain, sometimes going to the left arm, with associated sweating, nausea and dizziness. When this happens it is obvious that something is very seriously wrong and they usually end up in the right place – hospital. However it can commonly be the case that symptoms can be mild, and people ignore the pains, putting it down to indigestion or muscle aches.
There is usually a nagging doubt that there may be a heart problem which leads people to look for advice further down the line. Unfortunately, the delay involved can result in more serious heart damage and can even be life threatening. Don’t make that mistake, or allow others around you to do the same. If you have worrying chest pains call your doctor immediately, or dial 111 for advice. If necessary call 999. Ambulance crews are trained to take a heart tracing and if necessary deliver you straight to the Golden Jubilee Hospital for early treatment!

Craig, right, at the end of his 300 mile Great Wall of China challenge
Boclair House general manager Craig Haddow walked 300 miles over 10 hot and tough days during a Great Wall of China charity challenge. Craig, who is GM at the Bearsden hotel, and a team of 24 from the hospitality industry hiked around 30 miles each day on the iconic wall, which is one of the world’s seven wonders, in temperatures up to 39C to raise funds for HIT (Hospitality Industry Trust) Scotland.

The group exceeded their target of £30,000 and have so far raised just short of £40,000.
But there were many unforgettable highlights, too, including “the sheer scale of the wall, the amazing views from the peaks and the variation in the condition of the wall, from tourist-perfect to a pile of rubble was fantastic to see,” said Craig.
The terrain was tricky to negotiate and the challenge was physically demanding. Craig said: “The most diffi cult aspects were the heat and the sheer drops. Some of the team were

nearly £40,000 collectively is an amazing achievement. “Importantly, all the money raised goes back into HIT Scotland to help grow the next generation of emerging talent in the hospitality industry. I’m very proud to have played a part, and to have contributed to this amazing achievement.” HIT Scotland provides scholarships for emerging talent in the hospitality industry, and every penny raised will go towards the 218 opportunities which are awarded to encourage and grow the next generation of hospitality industry talent. Run the trail for charity An annual charity event in memory of the sister of Bearsden runner Maureen Macleod returns for the seventh year this month. Katie’s Run is an 11.8-mile trail event and takes place on August 13. The event raises funds for Strathcarron Hospice, where Katie Gallagher (pictured) was cared for during her cancer battle. Organiser Maureen says: “When my sister died I wanted to do something special that I could remember her by.
The run takes place in the Aberfoyle area where she lived and where she most enjoyed the scenery. “It’s great to see this event still going strong after so many years and it’s wonderful that we can raise funds for a worthwhile charity.” The one-way route of Katie’s Run is on the waymarked trail, the Rob Roy Way, from Aberfoyle to Callander. A bus leaves Coilhallen Woods Car Park in Callander at 10am to take participants to the start of the run. For more details email macleodmaureen@hotmail.com

success of parent cafÉ
Do you need an electrician? Call us now on 07702 536 877
Bearsden Barista began as a place for parents and toddlers to meet during the summer holidays, when many other groups take time off. The weekly meet-ups, with barista style coffee and freshly baked scones, proved to be so popular that the group continued into the autumn and now offers a regular weekly café in Bearsden Baptist Church. The founder of Bearsden Barista is Jill Morrison, of Milngavie. She said: “We realised last summer that many parents struggle with the long summer holidays when all the usual routines have stopped. We also spotted that parents often have to sacrifi ce good quality coffee and cake in order to fi nd a space for their children to play.
“So our aim was to provide a safe space for parents, grandparents and childminders to bring children with an area to play, and yet at the same time enjoy a café-style environment with good quality refreshments. “We are delighted that we have between 35 and 50 people attending every week.” The café, on Wednesdays from 1pm to 4pm, is staffed by volunteers with the help of the children and families’ worker and youth pastor from Bearsden Baptist Church. It is run as a not-for- profit
group and currently they are raising money for Glasgow City Mission and Tearfund. The plan is to also include a local charity to raise funds for. All products used at the café are either fairly traded or locally sourced whenever possible and goods are freshly prepared on the premises on the morning of the café.

HERE ARE SOME HANDY TIPS FOR BACK-TO-SCHOOL SHOE SHOPPING:
FOOT MEDIC PODIATRY & ORTHOTIC CENTRE
This month, many of us will prepare for the back to school mayhem of new uniforms and shoes. Thankfully, Foot Medic’s experts have shared some professional insight to make the task of new shoes a little less stressful. Podiatrist and director, Ciaran Canney says: As a father of two I understand that buying shoes for your child can be a challenging task, however when it comes to school shoes it is important to choose well. Children can spend up to 40 hours a week in their school shoes and it is likely they will test them out on all terrains and all activities. During the first 12-15 years of life our feet grow very quickly and external forces such as footwear shape and style can influence the development of the bones in our feet. It is Ciaran Canney therefore essential that when buying shoes for Bsc (Hon) MChs Pod our children we look for shoes that will support and enhance their foot’s growth and function.”
• Consider size and fit. ‘I cannot stress how important correct size and fit of shoes are for your child’s development. Have your child’s feet measured to determine their exact size. Be sure to measure both feet, as one foot can be longer and/or wider than the other. If there is a discrepancy, always choose shoes to fit the larger sized foot’. • Ensure that there is one thumbs width between the end of their longest toe (not always the big toe) and the end of the shoe. This should be checked when your child is standing, not sitting. • Make sure the shoes are wide enough by checking that the widest part of the foot corresponds with the widest part of the shoe. Ensure the depth of the shoe is adequate by seeing if your child’s toes can move freely within the toe box at the front of the shoe. • The shoes need to have a firm heel counter – the section which wraps around the heel at the back of the shoe. Test this by pushing around the outside of the heel counter – it should be strong and stable, not fold down when pushed. • The shoes should only flex at the toe box…not fold in half. Test this by placing the shoe in between both hands and bend each end of the shoe towards the other. Also, shoes should not twist easily when rotating the front half away from the back half of the shoe as though you are wringing out a cloth. • Look for shoes that have a secure fastening such as laces or Velcro and avoid slip on shoes if you can. • Look for shoes with a leather upper or another breathable material and will provide increased comfort. A non-slip sole such as rubber is also of benefit. • Shopping for shoes towards the end of the day is best to allow for natural swelling of the feet. Take the socks your child will be wearing with their school shoes with you to get a better fit. If your child has orthotics, be sure to also take these when trying on footwear. Always try to find shoes with removable insoles to accommodate the orthotic. • Finally, don’t forget to ask your child if the shoes are comfortable! A well-fitted shoe should not cause blisters, discomfort or pain.
If you have concerns about your child’s or your own foot health or the way they walk, always consult a HCPC registered podiatrist.

A popular trail running festival at Mugdock Country Park is making an appeal for financial help and support to stage another event. Despite being well attended over the past two years, TrailFest – Scotland’s Trailrunning Festival – requires fresh support through new investment, funding or a partnership. In light of this, the organisers have decided to take a “TrailFest rest” in 2017 but they are very hopeful of it returning in 2018. Co-founder Ryan Scott says: “Since its inception, TrailFest has been really popular. As well as the festival itself, we’ve added monthly social runs, training days and film nights. “But unfortunately we have taken the difficult decision to rest TrailFest this October.” Ryan explained that TrailFest has been self-funded without sponsorship or partnership since the start. He adds:
“While we’ve had the fantastic support of loyal volunteers and a large number of generous businesses and individuals, we’ve been unsuccessful in finding the investment, funding or partnership required to help establish and grow the event into one that is on every runner’s
calendar and, ultimately, can sustain itself. “We also had to weigh up the impact that organising TrailFest has on us as a family. My partner and festival co-founder Jo and I have two young children and we are acutely aware of the input required to organise TrailFest on such limited resources.” The couple do believe that the festival will return. Ryan says: “It has always been our goal to build TrailFest into a hub of trailrunning in Scotland. The dream is not dead and we will be exploring all opportunities, from potential partnerships to venues, who can share our vision to create a bigger and better TrailFest in 2018.” In the meantime, the TrailFest monthly social runs continue at Mugdock on the second Sunday of every month. Scott who is the director of Paveclean said that he believes his company has gone from strength to strength due to the strong customer service values which they hold. “Treating customers in a fair, respectful, professional manner at all times is so important to us. This ethos along with delivering a fantastic service and seeing our customers so delighted with the finished result makes our
job so rewarding. Our clients often tell us when we finish a job that they knew the result would be good, but they are totally surprised at “how good” it turns out. This is down to the equipment and cleaning agents we use along with our highly trained staff. We can offer our customers weed treatments to eradicate weeds growing in the paving, moss treatments to kill off moss on paving. Moss treatments on roof, where we scrape the moss off and then apply a moss killer which kills any latent spores which are not visible to the naked eye. We can also clear gutters using our camera system and vacuum. These jobs can be done at any time of the year including Autumn and Winter.

ARE YOU A CODE EXPERT? Commercial & Domestic Cleaners
d ... A local music school returns for the summer terms this month and with a host of instrument lessons. Haydock Music School has extended the piano teaching programme to include Tuesday lessons, as well as the Monday, Friday and Saturday. The music school, which was set up in 2014, also offers lessons seven days a week in guitar, drums, strings and woodwind. Students are encouraged to follow one of the recognised exam syllabus but lessons can be tailored to suit alternative aims. In this last exam period, all students received either Distinction or Merit. You can find out more, and book on-line, at www.haydockmusic.co.uk
A popular Code Club is keen to recruit adult or teenage volunteers who can help with the monthly sessions. The clubs, which are for nine to 11-year-olds, take place in East Dunbartonshire libraries, including Bearsden and Milngavie. The monthly sessions are free and offer the chance to learn a variety of digital skills in a fun environment. The hope is that these activities will inspire the country’s next generation of coding experts. Children who take part in the Code Clubs create digital games, build animations and develop websites. The activities are group based, so the youngsters will also

August is Scam Awareness Month and here we share some tips for safer computer use. More seniors than ever are online, using the internet, email, and social media, and in turn, more devious people are finding ways to scam seniors out of money, identity and security, all which could have detrimental consequences.
More than 100 people came together to enjoy a local event as part of celebrations for the 3rd International Yoga Day. The free event took place in the Halls of Bearsden Hub on June 21 and will now become an annual event for East Dunbartonshire. Manjulika Singh, who runs yoga classes locally, said: “It was my third time organising the event and we were grateful to the Community Magazine for highlighting it. “Many local yoga teachers offered their teaching for free that day and that was lovely to see.

Security. Make sure your computer has a virus checker installed. There are many anti-virus programs available. A good free one to start with is McAfee. Avoid sending personal information. Scammers might send out email on bank letterhead and say there is a problem with the account and you need to update information, password and account number. This is a sign of a scam. Learn to identify spam and scams. Don’t respond to emails from people you don’t know and never open attachments from strangers. Don’t ever give out personal or banking information to anyone you don’t know. Purchase merchandise from reputable sources. You are generally protected for purchases through Amazon and eBay.
Otherwise do your homework on the individual or company to ensure that they are legitimate. Make sure to obtain the seller’s physical address rather than simply a post office box and a telephone number. Guard your account information carefully. Be sceptical of individuals representing themselves as foreign government officials asking for your help in placing large sums of money in overseas bank accounts. Do not believe the promise of large sums of money for your help. Be wary of any offer that’s too good to be true. If you have been told you won a contest that you didn’t enter, or you’re being offered an incredible price on a vacation or product way below what you’d expect to pay, chances are they are scams. Do not reply to these emails. Use strong and unique passwords. Strong passwords are essential, just as they are with email and social media accounts. If you are concerned that you might have been scammed contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.

on species’ identification and a captive breeding programme to create a more resilient population of the pond mud snail in Scotland.”
Local schools, groups and volunteers are being encouraged to get involved in a new project called Marvellous Mud Snails. Over the next two years, the conservation organisation, Buglife Scotland, will be working on a project to promote and protect the rare pond mud snail (Omphiscola glabra). This snail is currently found at only five known sites in Scotland, including East Dunbartonshire. Buglife has received £48,900 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for the Marvellous Mud

Pond mud snails are an important part of the natural heritage of Scotland and are currently under great threat. Surveys in 2005-06 highlighted a significant decline at historical sites in Scotland and identified the snail from only five sites in the areas of East Dunbartonshire, North Lanarkshire, Scottish Borders, West Lothian and Clackmannanshire.

As a result of this significant decline, the pond mud snail is now classified as Vulnerable in the UK Red Data Books and is on the Scottish Biodiversity List.

GOOD
COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.
But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:
"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."
"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
