GORDY ‘EVERESTS’ ON DUMGOYNE A former Scotland rugby player has completed an impressive “Everestingâ€? challenge on a local hill for a charity close to his heart. Gordon "Gordy" Bulloch, who also captained West of Scotland FC in Milngavie in the 1990s, hiked Dumgoyne, in the Campsie Fells, 24 times to reach a total height of 8,906m. He completed the challenge over 72 hours and raised more than ÂŁ600 for the MND charity, My Name'5 Doddie Foundation. (name’5 is correct!) Gordy, 43, who lives close to the hill, said: “It felt like an ambitious goal at the start and one that would inspire people to sponsor me. I had no idea how I would feel doing multiple

climbs because while Dumgoyne is relatively small it’s also very steep. “But I had an amazing time over the weekend and I am surprised by how good I felt. Gordy, who is now a director of his family-run business Highland Metals, started his 24 climbs on the Summer Solstice at 7pm. Each climb of Dumgoyne includes between 360m and 400m of ascent, depending on the route, to reach the 427m summit.
Gordy said: "Although I felt tired by the end of most days I was surprised by how good I felt, too. I only really suffered a few sore toes. hike at Glengoyne Distillery at the base of Dumgoyne hill on the A81, just north of Strathblane.
The route begins with a gentler lower slope before a very steep climb with gradients up to 45 degrees to reach the peak.
With 24 as his aim, Gordy knew he would gain at least the same height as the world’s tallest mountain. On Thursday, he completed five ascents, then nine on Friday, seven on Saturday and the final three on Sunday.

“It was a double celebration to finish the challenge and reach my 500th summit of Dumgoyne, a hill that I see from my home. The chosen charity is poignant to Gordy. He said: “I had the honour of playing alongside Doddie Weir. He was diagnosed with MND last year and my 24in72 is my way of doing a little bit to help him and his foundation. See 24in72.co.uk.

A strength and fitness class aimed at the “more mature adult” is hoping to encourage new participants, both male and female. Activeage takes place four times each week at Garscube Sports Complex, West of Scotland Science Park, near Bearsden, and comprises a warm up before an aerobic workout and followed by a dumbbell and bodyweight conditioning section. Every class finishes with stretching and relaxation. April Logan is a service development teacher at the University of Glasgow Sport, which organises Activeage. which is supported by Milngavie Community Development Trust, aims to create a cycling activity group for riders of all ages and abilities to come together in the local area. Nigel Scott, treasurer of MCDT, said: “We are keen to see a community cycling group in the area. We want to encourage more people to cycle for fun and we want to show everyone how cycling is a sustainable form of transport for making short journeys. “We hope as many people as possible will come along to the Big Bike Event to find out more about cycling and the new community cycle group.” See info652106. wixsite.com/ mcdt for details of the cycle group in due course.

Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to
vote at Tesco stores for a chosen group. Milngavie Community Development Trust is one of the groups on the shortlist.
Tesco’s Bags of Help project has already delivered £52 million to more than 16,000 projects across the UK. Tony McElroy, from Tesco, said: “Bags of Help has been a fantastic success and we’ve been overwhelmed by the response from customers. It’s such a special scheme because it’s local people who decide how the money will be spent in their community.”
Blakey, secretary of MCDT, said: “We are calling for shoppers to help us to secure a grant from the Bags of Help scheme by voting for us at their local Tesco store.
The funds are available for community groups and charities for local projects that bring benefits to communities. Anyone can nominate a project and organisations can apply online.

Bearsden South Church Nursery was runner up in two categories, Healthiest Nursery in the UK and Best Nursery in Scotland, and was Highly Commended in the Manager of the Year UK award. The National Day Nurseries Association Nursery Awards are the only early years awards voted for by parents and judged on excellence. The shortlisting process involved judging visits and interviews. On Saturday September 1, MasterChef: The Professionals winner Gary Maclean, who was born in Glasgow, will add a celebrity touch to the day. Festival goers can also look forward to an event that combines a great mix of local Milngavie businesses and other first class Scottish food and drink providers. Examples include Jaw Brew’s craft beer, a Finsbay gin bar, a wine bar by Garvies, ice
cream from Colpi and children's activities from Honeybee Bakery. There will be masterclasses and demonstrations, craft beer bars, gin and prosecco pop-ups, an artisan market, an oyster and fizz bar and food trucks. Every ticket gives entry to the festival area, a branded glass and The Food and Drink Festival Programme with a list of all food and drink providers, as well as tasting notes. Liza Moran, manager at Milngavie Town Centre BID, which is supporting the event, said: “Milngavie BID is very pleased to
present the Food and Drink Festival 2018 and to build on the success of the previous year’s Beer Festival. “It’s a chance for Milngavie to welcome visitors and locals alike, boosting the local economy and showcasing the local area and businesses. “There will be plenty for people to see and do with the opening night ceilidh, food demonstrations, tastings and also a chance to meet the awardwinning chef Gary Maclean.” The event's family friendly and under 18s are welcome with an adult. TV VET’S PUPPY LOVE A veterinary surgeon from Bearsden is taking part in a national CBeebies programme to teach children about his work.
to watch. Instead, it’s about animals with minor conditions, which can be treated quite easily, and showing that animals can get sick, just the same as humans. “Rosie had some little benign warts on her body, which were about the size of baked beans. They can be harmful if they are left untreated, so the programme shows how we operated on her to remove them.”
Dermot Mullen and his two daughters, Orla, six, and Colette, four, were part of the filming for an episode of Ferne and Rory’s Vet Tales, along with their 11-yearold Jack-a-doodle, Rosie.
The show has also focused on pets with matted fur, or animals that need vaccinations. Orla and Colette had their time on camera, too, playing with Rosie in the garden at their house before her operation.
Dermot lives with his wife, also a vet, and their children, in Bearsden and works as a vet at Rouken Glen Vets in Newton Mearns. He says the fact he is not only a dad and a pet owner, but also a vet, made him an ideal person to work with on the show. The programme is aimed at teaching kids aged four-toeight about how vets go about looking after sick animals. Dermot said: “It doesn’t focus on animals who are really unwell, or anything which would be upsetting for kids
Dermot said: “The kids absolutely loved it. Lots of their friends already knew who Ferne and Rory were, so they thought it was really cool that I was going to be on the show.” Bearsden based Vet Dermot Mullen and his two daughters have been taking part in a national CBeebies programme

DAVID IS TOP ‘DISRUPTOR’ of £9 million since 2015, moved to new facilities to accommodate a growing staff and opened operations in the US.”
Milngavie businessman David Venebles, CEO of Synpromics picks up his award
A Milngavie businessman has won a prestigious Entrepreneur Of The Year award that praised him for his vision and great strategy. David Venables, CEO of gene control technology company Synpromics, triumphed in the Disruptor category of EY Entrepreneur Of The Year 2018 in Scotland. Another local businessman, Philip Grady, CEO of Castlight, was also shortlisted for the award. EY Entrepreneur Of The Year celebrates the contribution of entrepreneurs to the UK economy and this year celebrated its 20th anniversary. The Disruptor
category recognises entrepreneurs “with the vision and courage to challenge the status quo” and for “shaping and improving our working world and constantly striving for excellence”. The judges praised David for his clever business model. They said: “David took on Synpromics in 2015 with less than two months’ worth of cash and only seven staff. With his vision and great strategy, the company has raised in excess
Receiving the award, David, who lives in Milngavie with his wife and family, said: “I’m thrilled to receive such a prestigious award, especially when up against so many fantastic entrepreneurs contributing so much to the Scottish economy. “Synpromics continues to grow and thrive, revolutionising gene control and promoter design, and I am delighted to be leading our dedicated team to furthering this goal.” Synpromics’ technology enables unprecedented control of gene expression through its ability to custom design synthetic cell-type, or condition, specific promoters. August 2018 | What's Up Doc?
YOUR CHANCE TO PLAY IN A BIG BAND
What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn
This month: A DRINK TO YOUR HEALTH...?
The KVO Big Band are on the look out for new band members
A “Big Bandâ€? is looking for new players as they embark on a new term next month. The KVO Big Band is keen to hear from trombone and saxophone players, a guitarist, and they will also welcome trumpet players. David Sherry, from the band, said: “New players should be fairly good at reading music and be able to play to a reasonable standard. “We play all sorts of big band music from the 40s right up to big band arrangements of Abba, The Beatles, Michael BublĂŠ, Elvis and many more. “The music can be challenging, but we always play to entertain our audience and ourselves.â€?
The band rehearses in St Ninian’s High School in Kirkintilloch during school term-time on Wednesdays from 7:30pm to 9:30pm. They re-start after the summer break on September 5. David added: “Although we are based in Kirkintilloch we want to cast the net wider for new players and we are sure there will be people in Bearsden and Milngavie who would like to join us. The KVO Big Band also plays several charity concerts each year. For more information and contact details, visit www.kvobigband. org.uk or just head along to the first practice session.
We all know that alcohol has health risks, but I was recently interested to read that every time we drink alcohol, it causes gut and liver damage and increases body fat! When we take a drink, the alcohol first causes damage to the gut lining, allowing toxins to more easily enter the bloodstream. It first gets broken down into acetaldehyde, a chemical toxin that causes nausea and replaces healthy liver with scar tissue. Acetate is then formed, and each time it’s created, small parts of the liver degenerate and die. The body then
converts acetate to fatty acids which leave fat deposits on the liver, preventing it from working efficiently. So, every time we drink we increase our liver’s scar tissue, inflammation, fat deposits, cell death, as well as increasing the toxins in our blood. And we wonder why we don’t perform so well the morning after? On the other hand, the less alcohol we drink the better our sleep, mood, weight and energy levels, as well as clearer skin condition. Perhaps the next time you “drink to your health, it might be a non-alcoholic one?

BEARSDEN’S NEXT BIG THING! A Bearsden-based production company is taking a new play to the Edinburgh Fringe this month. Adapted from the novel, The Next Big Thing, by Scottish Government Brexit minister Michael Russell, the play is described as a funny, fastmoving and thoughtful fable of modern Scotland. The live action includes a filmed scene in which Jane McCarry (Still Game) appears in an on-screen cameo playing TV interviewer Morag McLeish, described as “a nasty wee besom”.
Members are requested to keep an eye on the new website for details about the start of the new season of sessions in October. See www.bearsdenart.org.uk
The show stars London-based Bearsden actor James Ruskin as Dr Donald Keays, “a scholar and a gentleman – a man who cannot fully master his shoelaces”.

James also co-produces the show, which features Mugdock Theatre favourite, Floss Ross. Live extracts from Beatles songs provide witty commentary throughout the show. Established Fringe talent Alex Howarth, of Fringe First-nominated and The New York Times Critic’s Choice We Live By the Sea, directs an eight-strong professional ensemble, which has been rehearsing in Bearsden throughout July before heading to Edinburgh. Street dance describes urban dance styles that evolved in the street, school yards and nightclubs, including hip hop, popping, locking, krumping and breaking. These dances are practised competitively, as well as being an art form and a great workout.
BALLROOM
CONTEMPORARY
Ballroom dancing has made a comeback in recent years. There are many styles of ballroom dancing from around the world, such as the waltz, tango and foxtrot, and each has specific step patterns. It is essential for both partners to know the steps so they can dance together.
Unlike dances such as ballet, contemporary dance is not associated with specific techniques. In contemporary dance, people attempt to explore the natural energy and emotions of their bodies to produce dances that are often deeply personal.
LINE DANCING
MODERN JAZZ
Line dances are choreographed dances performed in unison by a group of people in rows. Anybody can do it and the steps are easy to learn. Beginners can enjoy dancing to a whole range of routines to all genres of music. You don't need a partner so it's great for meeting people.
SALSA
Salsa dancing is a fun and flirtatious form of partner dancing, fusing steamy Afro-Caribbean and Latin styles into simple and lively movements. The basic steps are easy to learn, and you'll salsa your way across the dance floor before you know it.
TAP
Tap dance uses shoes with small metal plates on the soles to make the dance itself part of the music. Tap evolved in America and had its roots in African dance, Irish dance and clog dancing. Tap is as popular today as it was in the heyday of the great Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly musicals.

Jazz dancing is energetic and fun, consisting of unique moves, fancy footwork, big leaps and quick turns. Jazz dance was popularised in the US by the big bands of the swing era. It offers a full body workout, developing dance ability, flexibility, strength and rhythm.
SCOTTISH
Scottish Country is a social dance involving groups of couples dacing to set routines. These dances are set to musical forms (Jigs, Reels and Strathspey Reels) which come from the Gaelic tradition of Highland Scotland, as do the steps used in performing the dances.
ZUMBA
Zumba is a popular fitness programme inspired by Latin dance. The word "Zumba" comes from a Colombian word that means to move fast and have fun. Using upbeat Latin music together with cardiovascular exercise, Zumba is aerobic dancing that's great fun and easy to learn.

The whole of the UK has recently been enjoying unprecedented warm weather. Although this is generally welcome, it has also created some uncomfortably hot indoor working environments and complaints about working conditions. Guidance for employers and employees can be found in the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, which provides that during working hours the temperature in all indoor workplaces must be reasonable. There is no legal minimum or maximum working temperatures to determine what reasonable is or precisely when it would be considered too cold or too hot to work.
However, it does suggest that the temperature should be a minimum of 16ÂşC or 13ÂşC if employees are doing physical work. Unfortunately, there is no guidance for a maximum temperature limit provided for. There is a requirement that employers must adhere to health and safety at work law that includes; keeping the temperature at a comfortable level and providing clean and fresh air. In the event you feel your workplace is too hot to work comfortably then you should raise this directly with your employer initially who should take appropriate and reasonable steps to address this with you and any other employees affected.

As a way of helping care for and support people with dementia, music has been shown to often have a dramatic effect. The power of music, especially singing, to unlock memories and kickstart the grey matter is an increasingly key feature of dementia care. It seems to reach parts of the damaged brain in ways other forms of communication cannot. Our Caregivers were encouraged to support clients who expressed an interest in music and one lady who didn’t know her own name knew every song in the survey and sang them all! It made us realise that people with dementia had a special ability to remember songs. Even if people with dementia can’t talk, they may be able to sing, whistle, clap or tap their feet. It helps them, and their families to feel life is worthwhile.

Mortgage Matters:
Is It Now Cheaper To Buy Rather Than Rent?
NIGHT OF SYRIAN CELEBRATION
According to research recently carried out by Santander (Daily Telegraph 21 June 2018), it can now be cheaper to make monthly mortgage payments than pay rent even where homeowners have large mortgages. Their calculations, which show the average Jayne Daly total savings for mortgaged homeowners can Mortgage Advisor add up to £2,300 per household per year, are based on comparing mortgage repayments with rent (excluding other costs of home ownership such as repairs and maintenance). Although buying a property isn’t for everyone, some people can’t wait to get on the property ladder. Before considering buying a property, the pros and cons of buying and renting should be considered. Whilst saving for the initial deposit can be a big stumbling block for many first-time buyers, there are a number of government schemes available which may help you to get access to a mortgage with as little as a 5% deposit. Your property may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. We usually charge a fee for mortgage advice. An evening of Syrian culture, history, food and friendship was hosted by Milngavie Refugee Action Group (MRAG). The event took place at Gavin’s Mill in June and marked the end of Ramadan and celebrated Eid. Syrian refugee families provided the entertainment and food – and an open invitation was given to all. Dorothy Parkin, of MRAG, said: “There was a great turn-out and guests were greeted with nibbles and refreshments, as well as a welcome from Sue Milne of Gavin’s Mill. “At the request of the families the theme of the evening was a positive celebration of Syria.” The event included a photograph exhibition with family pictures
from Syria and Scotland, a craft workshop for children and a picture quiz on the history and culture of Syria presented by Oudai Tozan, from Syrian Network. Following the quiz, a feast of traditional Syrian food was produced. Dorothy said: “Food plays a big part in the culture of Syria and it was a great way of bringing everyone together with an opportunity to mix and chat.” MRAG was set up 3 years ago to campaign for the region to take in Syrian refugees and now helps to support the families that live over here as well as campaigning for the rights of refugees.

OBSTACLE RACE FOR CLUB CELEBRATES 130TH YEAR historic athletics club that counts many local KIDS AT MUGDOCK An runners among its memberships is celebrating a
A junior-only Obstacle Course Race (OCR) event takes place at Mugdock Country Park this month.
Ultm8 Warrior Glasgow is for age groups four to six years, seven to nine years and 10 to 13 years and will be on August 26. Each heat will involve one, two or three laps of an unique Ultm8 Warrior Obstacle Course. There will be 15 to 20 obstacles, including hurdles, net crawls, ramps, walls and a spider’s web. There will also be warriorthemed obstacles, such as taking on Thor and the Roman shield carry with sponge throwing for parents. Entry is £12. See www.ultm8warrior.co.uk.
130th anniversary this year. Maryhill Harriers, which is Scotland’s second oldest running club, was founded in Cannisburn Smithy in Bearsden, on November 2, 1888, by a small group including blacksmith Gilbert Thomson. The club grew to become a dominant force in Scottish athletics and cross country and by 1937 all Scottish middle and long-distance records were held by Maryhill Harriers. There were also many Olympic honours and Empire Games (later the Commonwealth Games) titles
and a strong veterans section scored records – still held to this day – at national, European and world level. The club’s own race, the Nigel Barge race, celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, too. It was founded to commemorate Nigel Barge who was killed in action in World War II after his father Kenneth, a club runner, made the proposal. The club is also proud of its community involvement and maintains close links with local schools, as well as boasting a
burgeoning junior section. The club’s place in the local culture is proudly acknowledged with a stained glass window in Maryhill Burgh Halls.
Scott Coulter, club secretary, said: “In this special 130th year we want to highlight the club to a wider number of people. We often run through Bearsden and Milngavie and we are keen to encourage new members from areas around Maryhill, as well as the community. “We are a friendly and sociable club, yet we’re still driven by the same passion instilled by our champions. Our blue vests can be seen at numerous races, from parkruns to ultras.” The club meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Glasgow Club John Paul Academy. See maryhillharriers.com.
HERE ARE SOME HANDY TIPS FOR BACK-TO-SCHOOL SHOE SHOPPING:
FOOT MEDIC PODIATRY & ORTHOTIC CENTRE
This month, many of us will prepare for the back to school mayhem of new uniforms and shoes. Thankfully, Foot Medic’s experts have shared some professional insight to make the task of new shoes a little less stressful. Podiatrist and director, Ciaran Canney says: As a father of two I understand that buying shoes for your child can be a challenging task, however when it comes to school shoes it is important to choose well. Children can spend up to 40 hours a week in their school shoes and it is likely they will test them out on all terrains and all activities. During the first 12-15 years of life our feet grow very quickly and external forces such as footwear shape and style can influence the development of the bones in our feet. It is Ciaran Canney therefore essential that when buying shoes for Bsc (Hon) MChs Pod our children we look for shoes that will support and enhance their foot’s growth and function.”
• Consider size and fit. ‘I cannot stress how important correct size and fit of shoes are for your child’s development. Have your child’s feet measured to determine their exact size. Be sure to measure both feet, as one foot can be longer and/or wider than the other. If there is a discrepancy, always choose shoes to fit the larger sized foot’. • Ensure that there is one thumbs width between the end of their longest toe (not always the big toe) and the end of the shoe. This should be checked when your child is standing, not sitting. • Make sure the shoes are wide enough by checking that the widest part of the foot corresponds with the widest part of the shoe. Ensure the depth of the shoe is adequate by seeing if your child’s toes can move freely within the toe box at the front of the shoe. • The shoes need to have a firm heel counter – the section which wraps around the heel at the back of the shoe. Test this by pushing around the outside of the heel counter – it should be strong and stable, not fold down when pushed. • The shoes should only flex at the toe box…not fold in half. Test this by placing the shoe in between both hands and bend each end of the shoe towards the other. Also, shoes should not twist easily when rotating the front half away from the back half of the shoe as though you are wringing out a cloth. • Look for shoes that have a secure fastening such as laces or Velcro and avoid slip on shoes if you can. • Look for shoes with a leather upper or another breathable material and will provide increased comfort. A non-slip sole such as rubber is also of benefit. • Shopping for shoes towards the end of the day is best to allow for natural swelling of the feet. Take the socks your child will be wearing with their school shoes with you to get a better fit. If your child has orthotics, be sure to also take these when trying on footwear. Always try to find shoes with removable insoles to accommodate the orthotic. • Finally, don’t forget to ask your child if the shoes are comfortable! A well-fitted shoe should not cause blisters, discomfort or pain.
If you have concerns about your child’s or your own foot health or the way they walk, always consult a HCPC registered podiatrist.

Total Swimming Academies was formed over 10 years ago by Olympic medallist and Chair of Swim Safe, Steve Parry. With around 1 in 2 children leaving primary school unable to swim in the UK, Steve’s mission was to create swimming opportunities for all children aged 3-11, resulting in happier, healthier and safer communities. Lessons are available at Boclair Academy in Bearsden. Total Swimming prides itself on creating engaging lessons in a safe environment, so children can enjoy themselves while learning an essential life skill.
Small class sizes, fully qualified teachers and online progression monitoring are just some of the ways in which Total Swimming make the Learn to Swim journey the best it can possibly be – ensuring the process is convenient for parents and fun for children. Discussing the programme, Parry says: “Giving every child in the community the opportunity to Learn to Swim is something I am passionate about. A Bearsden final year student completed a 65-mile challenge on foot between vet schools in two Scottish cities to raise funds for charity.
“Instead of stopping we just walked the final miles. We accepted we would arrive in the early hours of the morning. We bandaged our feet, took pain killers and gritted our teeth.”
James said: “It was a challenge beforehand even finding time to train between studying for our final year exams and completing the practicals at the vet college at Garscube. But the run itself was much tougher than we imagined it would be.” The friends started at 7.30am on June 16 and finished at 2am the following day. James said: “The first 30 miles were a dream.
