AWARDS FOR OUR UNSUNG HEROES also jointly to Pat and Margaret McMahon. Liz has been a leader in the 24th Glasgow (Bearsden) Scout Group for more than 25 years and has been Group Scout Leader for the last 13 years.
The winners are pictured with Cllr Polson (right), Cllr Moody (second from left), Bearsden Academy Head Teacher George Cooper and Trish Robertson, the Festival Coordinator (centre)
Six local heroes have been honoured for their inspirational volunteering work at the heart of Bearsden and Milngavie communities. The winners were picked from hundreds of people nominated as part of the 2019 Bearsden Festival, which took place earlier this summer. The winners of the 2019 Bearsden Festival Community Awards include Peter MacKinnon, who was presented with a Volunteer in Arts and Culture Award. Peter is a volunteer at Baljaffray and Castlehill primary schools, where he organises orchestra practice.
When he heard about the “Festival at Home” programme within Bearsden Festival, he gathered a group of Baljaffray pupils to play at a local care home, Buchanan Lodge. Elspeth McKay, of Bearsden, won the Volunteer in Health and Wellbeing Award. Elspeth has volunteered with Carers Link East Dunbartonshire for more than five years. She was described by colleagues as “a real treasure and very professional”.
The Young Volunteer of the year Award was presented to Bearsden Academy pupil Terry Forrey by head teacher George Cooper. Terry volunteers to pick up litter in and outside the school, promotes recycling and does so with such enthusiasm and eagerness that he encourages other pupils to help him, too. A nominee said: “Terry always has a smile on his face and a positive message to spread about looking after our school and local community.” Two awards for Long Service to the Community Award were presented to Liz Findlay and
A nominee said: “Liz has overseen and ultimately had responsibility for thousands of children and young adults from Bearsden and Milngavie as they have progressed through Scouting.” The judging panel received a large number of nominations from families in Baljaffray for Pat and Margaret, who have done a great deal to encourage young people into sport and volunteer at many school events. The winners received glass trophies by local artist Elizabeth Lloyd Kelly. Festival Coordinator Trish Robertson said: “It was so difficult to choose from the wonderful stories of dedication we received. “The awards were a great opportunity to reflect on how we all benefit from the work of volunteers and to say thanks to everyone contributing to the health and wellbeing of our communities.”

AN UPSTREAM BEAUMARTIN WINS TOP ACCOLADE BATTLE A Bearsden restaurant is delighted to have won a top business award voted for by customers.
Beaumartin The Cottage, on Milngavie Road, has been presented with the accolade of Best Restaurant at the Scottish Business Awards (Dunbartonshire). Hundreds of bags of rubbish have been collected from roadsides and river banks in East Dunbartonshire over just two months. The council signed up to the Upstream Battle, which is being coordinated by environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful to tackle plastics pollution in and around waterways. Over eight weeks this summer, the council’s Greenspace and Streetscene team, along with 200 volunteers collected 232 bags of litter. Bulk items were also removed, including 13 shopping trolleys, four tyres, two chemical toilets, a TV and a sandpit. Friends of Cairnhill Woods and the Clean Sweep Branch of Milngavie have also taken part in clean-ups. The campaign is on-going.
Richard added: “The award means a lot to us because it’s a constant concern to be sure that everyone has a good time at Beaumartin. “We want to keep our own strong identity but also make sure we please our diners with good food, wine, the right atmosphere and we are constantly questioning whether

STUART RUNS A CENTURY Stuart Macfarlane, from Bearsden collects his prize at his 5th West Highland Way Race. Inset shows a whisky glass given to Stuart by his support team for completing 100 long-distance events
Stuart finishes the 2019 WHW race with Spot the Duck
A Bearsden man has run an incredible 100 longdistance races after completing this year’s West Highland Way Race.
– running from Bearsden to 26 different villages each time.
Stuart Macfarlane, 66, has run a total of 64 ultras and 36 marathons in just 12 years. The business analyst started his running career at the tender age of 51 when his children told him he needed to get some exercise. He started with a short run around the block and then built up the distance until he did his first 10k in 2005.
what my limit was – how far could I keep on running for – and I became hungry for more than marathons.
Stuart was hit by a period of ill-health in 2017 and 2018 when he required a prostate operation and that was followed by a heart attack that required four stents to be inserted.
“So, in 2009, I took on my first ultra, the 35-mile Draycote Ultra in England. It was loops around the Draycote Water Reservoir and I thought is was an exhilarating experience.”
He had hoped to run his 100th long distance race in 2018 but put that back to 2019 so he could properly recover. The West Highland Way Race 2019 was his fifth time in the event.
Next came a half-marathon later that year before landing a place at the London Marathon in 2007. He also ran the Edinburgh Marathon and the Loch Ness Marathon in 2007.
After that, Stuart averaged 10 long distance races each year. He also took on other running challenges and in 2015 he ran 600 miles from the Scottish borders to Shetland.

A few months later, he ran 26 marathon distances in 26 days
He says: “I like the challenge of ultra distance events and although they are tough and I usually vow I will not do another, somehow, the following day when the pain has ebbed away, I am thoroughly looking forward to my next race. Who knows when I will stop?”

Jim McLarnon has penned The Scottish Trail Running Tourist: West Coast to East Coast. The author says: “Having covered the Milngavie area in my first book, I decided to find new locations and incentives to encourage people to visit while running.
Jim adds: “Realising that not everyone has access to a car, all the routes are accessible by public transport although some forward planning is required for some.”
“My second book focuses on running routes to places of interest, such as world heritage sites, areas of outstanding natural beauty, famous landmarks and historical architectural and engineering wonders.”
The trail runs include a route that finishes at Wemyss Bay train station, which is built on land reclaimed from the sea. Jim says: “This interesting old Victorian glass house structure is worth the 12km to get there.”
As with the first book, there are runs to suit a range of abilities, from an easy low level 5km woodland trail to a more

A local event this month is celebrating a “Year of Conversation”, when book fans are invited to get together for a Book Café. This is a chance to chat with other keen readers and to find out recommended books to read and enjoy a cup of tea.
Kelvin Choir, which meets at St Andrews Church Upper Hall, Roman Road, Bearsden, is particularly keen to recruit men to sing in the tenor and bass sections.
“New members, both men and women, are always welcome and while an ability to read or follow music and some experience of choral singing is helpful it is not essential.
The choir sings a wide repertoire of music for four-part choir, from classical through to contemporary. Between August and May they perform at least two concerts to local audiences.
“We hope that people will find our rehearsals enjoyable and stimulating, as well as welcoming.”
The Book Café at Bearsden Library takes place on August 15, from 6.30pm to 7.45pm.
Rehearsals for the choir, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, take place from 7.30pm to 9.45pm each Tuesday, starting from August 27. There is a 15-minute break each session. Annual membership is £80.
On September 26th from 2pm to 3.30pm, there is another Book Café at Milngavie Library.
Rachel Munro, from Kelvin Choir, says: “We are a nonaudition, mixed voice choir and we have members with a wide range of experience and technical abilities.

Mortgage Matters:
Could You Save Money Each Month By Re-mortgaging? Reducing your bills by hundreds or even thousands of pounds each year seems like a pretty smart idea to me. If you currently have a mortgage, you may be paying out more each month than you need to. When should you apply for a re-mortgage? Many people tend to think that they need to wait until their current deal ends before they can apply to remortgage, but this is not the case. You don’t need to wait until your existing loan ends before making a new application, as lenders will allow you to lock in a new deal up to 6 months before your current fixed term ends.

A Bearsden mountain biker is helping to organise a UK race that aims to raise money for good causes. Simon Haslam, who also runs Milngavie-based Glasgow Mountain Bike Club, is part of the team behind this year’s UK Singlespeed Mountainbike Championships. The event, which will take place at Comrie Croft in Perthshire on August 23, 24 and 25 is run by volunteers and will be supporting Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRiY). The charity is close to the hearts of many in the cycling community after former British youth cycling champion Ben Forsyth – son of Scottish world champion endurance mountain bike rider Keith Forsyth – lost his
life to a cardiac condition at the age of 20 last year. Simon said: “We hope that as many people as possible will support the championships and help us to raise funds for Cardiac Risk in the Young. “Support can come in the form of participation, raffle prizes and auction items, or financial donations. There are different sponsorship opportunities, too.” Other co-organisers are Neil Mackinnon and Iain Swayne. A CHANCE TO BE A BEFRIENDER An adult befriending project is looking for new volunteers to support their work in the community. Volunteers with East Dunbartonshire Voluntary Action’s “Befriending Service” is for older, disabled, housebound and isolated people living in East Dunbartonshire. Referrals are received from social workers, GPs, health visitors and voluntary sector care workers. A befriender is a volunteer who spends time each week with a vulnerable, socially isolated adult on a one-to-one basis. By providing companionship either in the person's own home, out and about in the community, or via email, volunteers can make a real difference to a person’s life.
The service also has regular social events, such as a recent trip to Troon, South Ayrshire. Brian Mcdermott, from EDVA, said: “The summer trip was one of our four social events we run each year for the benefit of befriendees, volunteers and accompanied by most of our staff. “This is an occasion for the service across the county to come together and get away from the local area for a while. If anyone can help us by volunteering we would like to hear from them.” Contact 0141 345 0432 or 0141 578 6680, or by email: Brian. mcdermott@edva.org or for the team at: info@edva.org.

This month: ANAPHYLAXIS Food allergy is thought to be on the increase, and we are not sure why. Very rarely, as was in the news a few months ago, people die of the most serious form of allergy – anaphylaxis. However, there are some common misunderstandings about what food allergy actually means. It is not food intolerance, which is when certain foods can result in unpleasant symptoms such as nausea, diarrhoea or stomach pains. Also, some forms of allergy never result in anaphylaxis, but may cause a rash. Whilst anaphylaxis is potentially life-threatening, the risk of death from it is close to 1 in a
million. People who are at risk are generally identified early, and the symptoms include rash, wheezing, swelling around the face and mouth and sometimes collapse. They should always carry an “Epipen” which contains adrenaline and are encouraged to use this early if there is even a small suspicion of anaphylaxis, and get straight to hospital. If there is a delay with the ambulance, a further injection can be given after 5 minutes, to prevent worsening again. With increased awareness by everyone of this problem, including nurses and doctors, it is hoped serious reactions are spotted and treated early!

Pupils from a Bearsden primary school have triumphed in an engineering design competition to beat the problem of river pollution. The six P7 children from Mosshead Primary came up with an innovative idea to reduce plastic pollution affecting the River Clyde. The group, called Team Clyde Clearout, presented their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) solution at Riverside Museum in Glasgow as part of the Keep Scotland Beautiful Upstream Battle campaign. The competition was organised by the charity Keep Scotland Beautiful in partnership with
Jacobs, the West Partnership and Education Scotland. Mosshead PS beat 15 other primary and secondary schools from across Glasgow and the west of Scotland to win “best Overall Project”. Liam Rocks, from Mosshead, said: “Upstream Battle has taught us so much about how harmful plastic pollution is for our rivers, seas and the environment. “We understand how important this issue is and we hope we have done something to change

"Working together in Team Clearout Clyde was great fun and we learned so much about each other and from each other. We’ve achieved so much more than we would have on our own.” Charity trustee, Bruce Robertson, said: “The young people impressed me with their knowledge and determination to address the global litter problem. “This competition has challenged pupils to put their thinking caps on and consider the opportunities to solve this problem using their STEM skills.” See www.keepscotland beautiful.org.

TIME TO TRY
Something New
The summer holidays already seem like a distant memory, and a distinct chill in the air heralds the onset of autumn – but that doesn’t mean we have to accept that the fun part of the year is nearly over. We understandably moan about our seemingly never-ending winter, but the “off season” – dark nights, frequent rain – is the perfect time to discover new interests, probably mainly indoors, that can deliver major benefits in terms of self-fulfilment and even career advancement. There are so many classes and courses available within an easy journey of home that we really are spoiled for choice when it comes to finding something worthwhile to add to our stock of knowledge and experience, even before you consider
diversions which are mainly about entertainment. Most of us have at one time or another briefly considered learning a language (at least proficiently enough for simple conversation) or playing a musical instrument, but somehow it often seems difficult – in a busy life full of existing commitments – to make it happen. On the cusp of those long dark nights it’s a great time to consider how best to spend those shouldbe valuable hours that might otherwise be taken up with dull nights in with the TV.
Not everybody fancies the idea of a fitness or dance class, but it’s a great way to stay alert during the long drawn-out winter, or you could consider the potential benefits of a yoga class as a nonstressful way of developing inner confidence and bodily health.
Still on eastern disciplines, the more active among us might consider learning the basics of karate, a skill which is all about self control but which its enthusiasts also find stimulating and rewarding on a variety of personal levels. The area’s colleges are an obvious first port of call when it comes to deciding just what to choose from the multitude of options on offer, with evening classes – in anything from classical guitar to ancient history – a standard feature

many of us will already have experienced. However it’s also true that “flexibility” is built into many choices now in a way that was seldom the case in the past, and by carefully studying exactly how particular courses or classes operate you should be able to find a day and time that fits in with your existing commitments – there shouldn’t be the need to add any extra stress to what many of us already find a fairly enervating time of year.
primary objective it’s also the case that autumn classes of almost any kind give you the chance to meet new friends and discover shared interests.
Whether it’s an art class, flower arranging, drama or swimming, you’ll find a host of options at a convenient location near you, and while it may not be your
If the main aim is simply to develop a leisure interest, the scope is virtually limitless, because the range and sophistication of the courses now available is probably at an all time high, while if it’s academic – or something specifically related to your line of work – it may be more about finding exactly the right course that fits into a pattern of learning you have already developed.

For some it may simply be about being able to exchange a few pleasantries with people in a country you aim to visit on holiday, or it could be you already do a bit of painting, writing, or something similarly creative and are hoping to take what you’ve already achieved to the next level. The advertisers in this feature offer a broad selection of the sort of choices on offer, and are a great place to look for inspiration – those otherwise dreary late-year nights really can be used to open up a wealth of fun and positive opportunities.

I was recently surprised to learn that in the UK over 50% of the adult population do not have a will. A will is an essential legal document that details your intentions as to the disposal of your estate following death. Dying without a will, known as being intestate, means that the statutory provisions for succession will be applied and your money, property or possessions will be distributed in terms of the Succession (Scotland) Act 1964, which may not accord with your wishes. In Scotland, if there is no will, a spouse or civil partner has certain automatic prior rights in relation to the heritable home in which they reside

t
If there are no further relatives then it falls to the crown. It should be noted that, even where there is a will, those entitled to claim legal rights can choose to do so, whether they have been included in the will or not. The rules surrounding succession can be complex and I suggest you speak to your solicitor if you require further advice.

YOGA DAY AT THE HUB
This was followed by a short message read by Anju Ranjan, the Consular General, Edinburgh, from Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, about Yoga day.
The 5th International day of Yoga was celebrated with a local event earlier this summer. The yoga day, which was free to attend, was held at Bearsden Hub and started with a Raj Yoga meditation.
Participants then enjoyed a series of yoga sessions, relaxation and Pranayam. Manjulika, who organised the event and runs Yoga with Manjulika, said: “The day was very well attended and enjoyed by all. It has become an annual event and we hope people will save the date for June next year.”

CALL OUT FOR MILNGAVIE WEEK ARTEFACTS A local group is on the hunt for memorabilia for a special forthcoming exhibition. Milngavie Heritage Centre Group is looking for any artefacts – and stories – relating to the historic gala, Milngavie Week. They are planning a display entitled “Milngavie Week – A History”, which will take place in early September to coincide with the nationwide event, Doors Open Day. Eric Gotts, chairperson of the MHC group, says: “For more than 60 years, the annual Milngavie Week gala in June has been a source of community pride and enjoyed by all. “Our exhibition will trace the history of this colourful event from its origins in the mid sixties, when Milngavie was twinned with the French town of Bauge, to the present day when it was re- launched in 2016 after a gap of several years.
“We are interested in receiving any Milngavie Week memorabilia for display at the exhibition. “The group would also be interested in hearing about local people’s personal experiences of the gala week so that this heritage exhibition can become a trip down memory lane.” To share memorabilia and stories, you can contact 0141 956 3541.
