SHARK CAIRN: Bearsden Shark cairn being unveiled by Dr Neil Clark (Curator of Palaeontology at the Hunterian) and provost Una Walker

A special cairn has been unveiled to mark the site of a world acclaimed 300-million-year-old shark fossil find in Bearsden. In 1981, a number of fossils were found by a boy in the Manse Burn, Baljaffray, but no-one was aware of their signifi cance until he showed them to a local expert.

the world’s only complete shark fossil of its kind. Subsequently, the Manse Burn site has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

The fossil shark, known as the Bearsden Shark, was then discovered after an excavation by the late Scottish fossil collector, Stan Wood.

Thanks to residents the discovery is now commemorated at Manse Burn with the cairn and an information plaque. The complete fossil is on display at the Hunterian Museum at Glasgow University.

It has since been studied in microscopic detail and compared with other fossil sharks from around the world. Palaeontologists believe it is

MUGSTOCK: Last year's festival proved to be a great success for all the family despite the damp weather.

The founder of last year’s inaugural family festival, MugStock, is hoping to build a bigger and “even better” event this summer. Alan Govan says he is on the look out for “energetic and passionate people” to help with the next festival, which takes place on a bank holiday weekend, from July 29 to 31. He adds: “In 2016, we want to build on the foundations that have been laid and to attract more people to enjoy an even better festival. In addition,

MugStock is now a registered charity. “We are inviting expressions of interest from people with the time and enthusiasm to make a contribution to the planning and promotion of the festival.” In particular, Alan hopes to fi nd people with skills in fundraising, graphic design, marketing, event production, Google adwords,

video production, and “those who make excellent cakes,” he says. The fi rst MugStock was exactly as Alan had hoped it would be. The festival attracted more than 1200 people, who converged in the beautiful surroundings of Mugdock Country Park for a weekend of music and merriment. Alan says: “My belief that the park would be a great place for a festival proved to be well founded. The atmosphere was fantastic and half of those who bought tickets brought children along, too, which made MugStock the family friendly festival I had imagined. “I was also indebted to the team of amazing people who gave their time freely to help make this dream of a festival into a reality.” Tickets are already on sale for MugStock 2016 from www. mugstock.org and from Hillfoot Service Station in Bearsden. New for 2016 are zero booking fees, cheaper day tickets, overnight camping with every ticket and a “great value for money” family ticket.

work time speaking to many people but can, at the end of the day, still feel quite alone.” Marie believes many people are seeking the opportunity to talk about the ups and downs they face everyday. She says: “Long gone are the days when we had neighbourhood communities that looked after and supported each other. The aim of Heart to Heart is to bring people together in a group setting and to offer a place for human contact and to make friends. This group for adults is about encouragement and support for each other.”

How important is friendship to you? And how much do you value real-time human contact and the exchange of life’s experiences? A new group called Heart to Heart could be the perfect place to meet with others who understand the importance of these questions. Set up by Marie McInally, of Milngavie, the fortnightly “community friendship group” launched at the Fraser Centre in Milngavie in December 2015, from 7pm to 8.30pm. Marie believes that there is a real need for a group that offers

people a chance to communicate and share with others our everyday stresses and to offer mutual support. She says: “We live in a modern world that offers infi nite ways to communicate but so often these communication methods are virtual; via the internet, email and social media. Yet it is necessary for our well-being to spend time with others in a positive way. “The irony is that we spend our

She says: “There are many groups for socialising, counselling, dating and taking part in activities, this group offers time to reconnect with others. People can be themselves in a relaxed and happy environment and enjoy chatting over a cuppa.” The group is free to attend with an optional small donation for refreshments. He first learned his trade as a floorlayer, which in those days consisted of a four year apprenticeship, as well as working in the company showroom at weekends. This helped him to gain a vast knowledge of his trade and with many years of hard work he is delighted to hold the prestigious title of N.I.C.F Master Fitter.

Book in to ReaDiscover

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

As Scotland marks National Libraries Day this month, your local community libraries will launch a new campaign launch called ReaDiscover. The aim of the promotion, starting on February 6, is to highlight book titles that celebrate the Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design and to encourage more adults and children to find out about Scotland’s many great achievements. The Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design 2016 is a Scottish Government initiative led by VisitScotland. The campaign, from January 1 to December 31, aims to celebrate the richness of Scotland’s heritage, culture and environment, alongside the contemporary and cutting-edge designs of today.

From textiles and technology, to architecture, fashion and design, the programme will shine the spotlight on Scotland’s greatest assets and icons, as well as some hidden gems. To learn more you could start with a trip to your library. You’ll also find there’s a chance to win a mini iPad. Libraries will also be taking part in the Scottish Government’s Read Write Count campaign. Pop along to Brookwood in Bearsden, Milngavie or Westerton libraries to find out more about the different ways to help children and families develop a love of reading, writing and counting. See www.edlc.co.uk for libraries information

This month: FUELLING UP... We are what we eat ... and drink! Last month the first new guidance in 20 years was issued, stating that no amount of alcohol is safe. The maximum intake for men has been reduced to 14 units per week. To put this into perspective this is equivalent to 8 bottles of Becks or 7 glasses of wine. That is per week - not per night! The main reason for the new advice was increased risks of certain cancers. However alcohol is linked to other medical problems such as heart disease, obesity, and mood problems and giving people more information

about its impact is hoped to counter the “alcohol culture” in Scotland. Moves are afoot to put a “sugar tax” on unhealthy foods, and adding vitamins to more foods. Recognising the impact of what we eat and drink on our health is obvious but can sometimes be neglected in the busy lives that we lead. Freshly prepared food with a balance of fresh meat or fish with vegetables and fruit is recognised as the first step in eating well and avoiding illness. We wouldn’t put the wrong petrol or oil in our cars so why not give our bodies the fuel they need!

MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS: Milngavie Mountaineering Club scale beautiful mountains such as Beinn An Lochainn

A local mountaineering club is keen to welcome new walkers and climbers to enjoy regular days and weekends away in 2016. Milngavie Mountaineering Club, which recently celebrated its 30th anniversary, organises fortnightly outings at weekends to Scottish mountains and hills. The annual programme includes fi ve weekend trips, to places further afield in Scotland, such as Skye and the Cairngorms, and also across the UK. Kevin Murray, president of MMC,

says: “We’re an active club of about 40 members. We’ve a mix of ages, abilities and interests, from hill walkers and Munro baggers to scramblers and climbers. “After three decades, the club continues to thrive and we always welcome new faces.” A typical day meet will see up to a dozen members tackling Munros,

New members do not need to be highly experienced to join the club. Kevin says: “Basic navigational knowledge, knowing how to use a map and compass, is a bonus, but we can help people with this. The only requirement is a decent level of fi tness. You should be up to spending a good six to eight hours in the hills.” Kevin adds: “Joining a club like the MMC is a fantastic way to get out and explore Scotland, improve your fitness, enhance your outdoor skills and confidence and, of course, meet lots of likeminded people.” See www. milngaviemountaineeringclub.org for details.

DEVELOPMENT: Attendants of the Milngavie Community Council voted to create a new development trust

Residents in Milngavie voted overwhelmingly for the creation of a new Development Trust at a meeting attended by more than 100 people. Last month’s consultation meeting was organised by Milngavie Community Council. Spokesperson Callum Christie said: “We had a fantastic turnout, including people of all ages. It is heartening to receive this mandate from so many residents. “We will now be proceeding to set up a limited company, probably with charitable status, and we are encouraging people

to come forward and offer their knowledge and expertise to help make the Development Trust a real success.” The formation of the Development Trust comes after Milngavie Community Council organised a survey to find out what people felt about living in Milngavie – and where they thought there was room for improvement. won’t want to miss this show

If you like cycling, are a keen runner or have ever had aspirations of taking part in a triathlon, you will not want to miss the launch of Scotland’s most innovative outdoors show. Coming to the SECC Glasgow from Friday March 11th to Sunday March 13th, the Scottish Cycling, Running and Outdoor Pursuits Show is sure to be a big hit with both novice and experienced cyclists and runners. And even better, with a whole host of interactive attractions such as mini velodrome time trials, an indoor running track, climbing walls, Segway and triathlon challenges as well as a bespoke kids’ cycle area and show theatre, there is something for everyone. With family tickets selling for only £25 when booked in advance, it guarantees to be a great fun and inexpensive family day out. For more details and to buy your ticket, visit the website: www.scrops.co.uk

Catherine McWilliam, a representative of Development Trusts Association of Scotland (DTAS), attended to offer information about the possibilities of a Development Trust. Ideas that received a healthy support included the return of Milngavie Week and the launch of an annual Fair of Clubs and Societies. Improving the start of the West Highland Way, establishing a Renewable Energy project, and creating a masterplan for Lennox Park were also well backed. The fi rst Development Trust AGM will take place later this month. Follow the Facebook page Making the Most of Milngavie or keep an eye on Community Council notice boards in the town’s precinct. Residents who would like to become a member of the Development Trust and receive news of its work can sign up at www.milngaviedt.co.uk.

Pets appeal success The organiser of a local annual Scottish SPCA appeal wants to pass on thanks to all those who donated. Morag Brown, who runs Cat & Dog Grooming Salon and Bearsden Dog Training Club, says: “We had such a great response to our appeal in aid of the SPCA Shelter at Milton, and also for The Small Animal Hospital. “The article in the Bearsden & Milngavie Community Magazine asking for donations offered a real boost.

Bye Gum Getting chewing gum stuck in your clothes is enough to test the patience of even the most tolerant among us. Fear not though as we have the solution. Rub egg whites on the offending article, wait a few minutes and then rub it off with your fingers. Hey presto. Gum be gone.

The appeal has taken place every year for a decade but people can still donate goods for animals to Pawcasso and at the CE Centre in Milngavie.

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB

This month: COHABITATION RIGHTS It is often a misconception of cohabiting couples that they are protected by the rules of common law marriage. Unfortunately, there is no such thing in Scotland, no matter how long you have lived together. It is, however, possible for individuals to make a financial claim following the end of a cohabiting relationship, caused either by separation or death. The Family Law (Scotland) Act 2006 makes certain provisions for this under S.28 and S.29. If you are able to show that you have suffered an economic disadvantage and that this has been in the interests of your partner or children, including children accepted as being part of the family, then you may be entitled to seek a capital sum payment. The court will consider whether

your partner has gained any economic advantage as a result of contributions made by you. Contributions can be non-financial, such as bringing up children, allowing your partner to progress their own business or career. The court may also take into consideration the future economic burden of caring for any children. A claim of this type must be made within one year and a day after the date of separation. There is also provision for circumstances where a partner dies without leaving a will. However, the time limit for a claim of this type is only six months from the date of death. Although of some assistance, this legislation does not put cohabitants on an equal footing with married couples and does not allow any claim for aliment.

Get the best care for your ears... Husband and wife team Greg and Val Clements of Clements Earcare Services tell us about about their fantastic business. reg Clements launched the practice in partnership with his wife, Val, in 1996. At the time he had been working for a large national hearing aid retailer and was motivated by the strong belief that he could do a better job for the clientele as an independent practitioner. Some twenty years on he is not shaken in this belief which was recently vindicated by the results of a Which report concerning hearing care provision, wherein the independent sector (often small service providers such as ourselves) outperformed both the NHS and all the large national chains. This report is readily available online or in the Which magazine and you can read more about it on our blog. al Clements has been involved in the practice since its inception in 1996 and is a now co director with Greg. Self effacingly, she is often heard to say that she is not the "technical one" and in so doing she is deferring to Greg. This is not at all a true

reflection of her abilities and she is a frequent and keen co-participant (with Greg) at educational events and seminars, Recently notable were her attendances at the Unitron professional development events in Vienna and at the Unite University in Manchester, with specific interest in a seminar on small business branding. The most important thing to Greg and Val is good customer service and it must remain personal. In this respect they believe they have a competitive advantage over some of their larger rivals. It's only Val and Greg so you will only ever be dealing with either or both of us. You get to know them and they get to know you.
