The Bearsden Freestyle Ski Team consisting of Chris McCormick, Harris Booth, Luke Burke, Murray Buchan, Flynn Abu-Rajab and Olivia Burke

Snowboarding team consisting of Danny McCormick, Lewis Moore and Hollie Smith

sKiers AnD BoArDers TriuMPh AGAin A Bearsden club has won two top prizes in a prestigious UK freestyle ski and snowboard competition – for the second year running. Youngsters from Bearsden Ski and Snowboard Club once again reign supreme in both the ski and board categories of the GB Park and Pipe’s online video league. The annual Championship Ski and Snowboard (CSS) competition is supported by Snowsport Scotland, Snowsport England, Snowsport Wales, UK Sport and sponsored by Ellis Brigham, The Snowboard Asylum and Delancey. CSS saw six ski and snowboard teams featuring 64 skiers and 52

snowboarders from indoor snow and dry slopes across the country. They battled for five months in head-to-head matches where riders were judged on video for their tricks. A spokesperson for CSS said: “The league has created a platform where young freestyle talent can be showcased. “This season more than half of the CSS competitors were aged 16 or under with the youngest competitor aged just five.”

After taking both titles in 2016, Bearsden again impressed judges in all their matches. But this year they were challenged right to the line, particularly in the snowboarding competition. Neil McGrain, from the Bearsden club, said: “We were stoked to take both titles in the first year but to do it again this year is fantastic. The teams worked hard for each round and it paid off.” Neil believes that an established youth programme at the club has been key to their success. He said: “Our focus is on challenging skills development at a level appropriate for each

athlete. This means the sessions are tailored to each idea and no two riders will necessarily be working on the same aspect of performance. “It is also reinforced throughout the programme that if you want to develop to a higher level then you’ll need to take ownership from your own learning by skiing or snowboarding another few sessions each week on your own.” Bearsden Ski and Snowboard Club is also fortunate to have coaches who have competed at the Olympics, World Cups and Europa Cups.

Winter break for green bins

Have your say on Moor plans

Residents should note that the councils’ garden waste collections have stopped for the winter. The green bin collection will resume in March 2018. Councillor Jim Gibbons, Convener of the Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets Committee, said: “In winter there is a significant reduction in the use of green bins as people are less active in the garden and there is little plant growth. If local people do have garden waste over the winter they can take it to the Mavis Valley Recycling Centre in Bishopbriggs or home compost it. For more information on the garden waste collection service see www. eastdunbarton. gov.uk/residents/ recycling-waste/ bins-and-recycling

Milngavie residents are being asked to help shape the future of one of East Dunbartonshire’s hidden gems. The public is invited to a drop-in event on Wednesday December 6, from 3-7pm, at Cairns Church to find out more – and to have a say on the Local Nature Conservation Site, Barloch Moor, at Old Mugdock Road. East Dunbartonshire Council has contracted Heritage Environmental Ltd to produce a five-year management plan for the site. Councillor Jim Gibbons, Convener of the Council’s Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets Committee, said: “Barloch Moor is one of East Dunbartonshire’s hidden gems and is bursting with biodiversity.

When Stephen Flynn joined the Milngavie Mountaineering Club six years ago he had walked just 20 of Scotland’s Munros. In early autumn this year, the web designer finished his round of all 282 of the Scottish mountains with a summit of at least 3,000ft.

Stephen Flynn relaxes with friends and family at the top of Ben Nevis, after completing his first round of Munros

With friends and family around him, Stephen, 42, hiked to the top of Ben Nevis at 4,412ft and enjoyed toasting his success. He said: “I kept Ben Nevis to the end for my first round of Munros because it is the tallest and most famous. “I also wanted friends and family with children to be able to reach the top with me. Ben Nevis might be the tallest but

it does have a path to the summit. “When I got to the top it felt great. The weather wasn’t the best but to have achieved a full round felt brilliant.” Stephen, of Bishopbriggs, has since recorded his Munro round with the Scottish Mountaineering Club, the keeper of such records, and received a certificate to say he was the 6,442nd finisher.

Stephen said: “It wasn’t until I became a member of the MMC that I thought about ticking off my Munros. Over the years, I enjoyed many Munro hikes with MMC members and friends. It has been a great way to meet new people, see different parts of Scotland and keep fit. “Now I think I will start a round of the mountains called Corbetts and revisit some of the Munros that were not blessed with good weather the first time around.” MMC welcomes new members. KiDs sTeP uP for fesTiVAL Four hundred primary school pupils from Bearsden and Milngavie enjoyed taking part in an annual Scottish Country Dance Festival. The festival, at Milngavie Town Hall, is in its fifth year and is organised by members of the New Kilpatrick Country Dance Club with the support of the Glasgow Branch of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society.

Patrick Murray, one of the teaching squad, said: “The children, although some a bit reticent at first, soon begin to relish our weekly visits, which frequently results in amusing dialogue.

Volunteers visit schools weeks in advance of the festival to teach the primary 7s a programme of many of the well-known dances, such as The Dashing White Sergeant, Virginia Reel and Flying Scotsman.

“Giving the boys a bit of encouragement, I told the story of how the clansmen in the olden days would dance before they went into battle. ‘Why do you think these brave warriors would dance before fighting?’ I ask. One wee lad put his hand up to say: ‘It stops you from getting a heart attack.’ ”

Each school also has an individual choice of two special dances that they perform as a demonstration in front of the enthusiastic festival audience.

A Christmas concert by a Bearsden mixed voice choir this month could be your inspiration for an enjoyable new hobby. Kelvin Choir will be performing their festive concert on December 17 at 3pm at St Andrew's RC Church. The concert will welcome special guests, including St Andrews Children's Choir. Tickets are £5 including refreshments. In January, the choir will begin rehearsals for their next concert in May and they are keen to encourage new singers to join their group. Rachel Munro, a member of the choir, said: “We are a nonaudition, mixed voice choir, including soprano, alto, tenor and

bass, with members across a wide range of experience and technical abilities and we would very much like more people to come along to find out if they might like to sing with us. “An ability to read or follow music and some experience of choral singing is helpful but not essential. We can promise people that they will find our rehearsals enjoyable and stimulating and the atmosphere very welcoming.” The choir’s music director is conductor, composer and

baritone Edwin Hillier and the repertoire of music is wide from classical to contemporary pieces. Previous performances have included works by Bach, Handel, Mozart, Puccini and Bruckner. Rehearsals for the choir resume on Tuesday January 9 and take place weekly thereafter from 7.30pm to 9.25pm – including a 15-minute break – in the Upper Hall of St Andrew’s RC Church between late August and midMay. There is an annual membership fee of £80. See www.kelvinchoir.com for more information about the concert and becoming a future member.

Pupils from a Milngavie school were a key part of the launch of a new World War 1 education resource that will be used across the region. The Douglas Academy students gave a powerful performance at the launch event based on letters from local people during the war years. The stories included the Boyd brothers of Milngavie and the diaries of two local nurses, Elspeth Graham and Kate Jeffrey, who volunteered in World War I. The new teaching and learning resource explores the impact of World War I on East Dunbartonshire. Many of the new discoveries have come from war research volunteers, who have spent two years exploring the lives

of men, women and children living in the area during World War I. Councillor Jim Gibbons, EDC’s Convenor of the Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets Committee, said: “The launch of this education resource for schools across East Dunbartonshire is an important part of the centenary commemorations of World War I that have been organised over the past three years by the council and the EDLC Trust. “The resource will help our students to learn about this tragic period in history in new and

As well as the Douglas Academy performance, guests, including councillors, pupils, parents, teachers and local residents, were entertained by living history group, Scots in the Great War, while local enthusiast, Harry Doy, brought along his World War I collection. The East Dunbartonshire's War project is supported by the Scottish Government Public Library Improvement Fund administered by the Scottish Library and Information Council (SLIC).

Fair Trade supporters gathered at Gavin's Mill recently to celebrate East Dunbartonshire's 10th anniversary as a Fairtrade Zone

Local Fair Trade campaigners, councillors, supporters and shoppers joined together for a special milestone birthday event recently. The celebration marked East Dunbartonshire’s 10th year as a Fairtrade Zone. The party was organised by East Dunbartonshire Fair Trade Steering Group at Gavin's Mill shop and café in Milngavie and was well attended. The region was one of the first in Scotland to gain Fairtrade Zone status in 2007 and has held the accolade continually since then. The council continues to work with the steering group, as well as Fairtrade Town groups in Bearsden, Milngavie and Lenzie.

In addition, East Dunbartonshire's Fair Trade Nurseries programme has been running for more than five years, with the aim of helping to inspire the next generation of consumers. Councillor Jim Gibbons, Convener of the Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets Committee, said: “Retaining Fairtrade Zone status for 10 years is a remarkable achievement and I was pleased to celebrate the milestone in October with so many supporters and enthusiasts.”

Paveclean

The council passed a resolution last November to support Fair Trade Locally, including a pledge to use such goods wherever possible when catering for council meetings and functions. Earlier this year, East Dunbartonshire had its Fairtrade Zone status reaffirmed, which guarantees the honour until 2019. Bearsden & Milngavie has also successfully renewed Fairtrade Town status for another two years. Gavin’s Mill took the opportunity to put a call out for more keen volunteers to help in the shop, café, kitchen, office or with maintenance. You can e-mail volunteer@ gavinsmill.org to find out more about the volunteer work.

December 2017 | What's up Doc?

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: REWARDING BEST EFFORTS! Last month I had the pleasure of attending the Scottish Health Awards in Edinburgh. Alongside other doctors there were people involved in the NHS in many different ways, including physiotherapists, optometrists, nurses, speech therapists, managers, carers and volunteers. It was uplifting to hear the stories of how people had been recognised for the special attention and care which they had shown to patients. At a time when we are often hearing stories of failures within the NHS, it reminded us that the vast majority of healthcare professionals often give a little of themselves, which makes their work more than

just a job, and makes people feel like a real individual and not just another patient. A few days later the new Scottish GP contract, previously unchanged since 2004, was unveiled. This puts patients at the centre, but will see GPs’ role changing to “Expert Generalists”, possibly having a more handsoff role but using their knowledge and expertise to supervise and support other professionals such as physiotherapists, pharmacists and nurses to ensure people get the most appropriate care from the person best placed to give it. Hopefully as things progress, we will see even more clinicians nominated by grateful patients and colleagues!

“The course is for people who are keen to get back to running, perhaps after injury or having a baby. It is always the case that people want to get fit in the New Year and they have great resolutions, so this is the perfect time to launch our new course.” Included in the price of the course is a technical running t-shirt and reflective bib on completion. The winning Ladies 2nd team: Susan Burns, Fiona Dunlop, Pauline Hughes, Esther Morgan and Carol Hamilton

Scott Curran took home both the U16 and U21 trophies

An annual awards night at Bearsden Lawn Tennis Club celebrated the success of many players – and raised much-needed funds. The U16 accolade and Young player of 2017 was Lucy Taylor.

The BLTC Awards Evening 2017 recognised a host of club champions and successes in tournaments and social events throughout the year. The ladies singles and also the U21 ladies winner was Rachel Taylor, while Kafui Akpoyoung won the men’s singles trophy. In the doubles category, the winning ladies were Joanne Quirk and Emma Wright and the winning men were Kafui and Gordon Wilson. The U21 men’s accolade was taken home by Scott Curran, who also won the U16 trophy.

Kyle Mckay was recognised as the U12 and U14 winner, while the J Black Mixed Handicap trophy winners were Jayne Gilkes and Scott Waterfield. A BLTC Team of the Year prize was handed out to the ladies 2nd team after gaining promotion to WSLTA Division 2. The awards night, held at Douglas Park Golf Club in Bearsden, was a great opportunity to raise funds towards the completion of the club’s extension and refurbishment of the mini/

practice court. A total of more than £1,100 was collected thanks to a raffle and a “blind” auction. Phil Waterfield, who is part of the Social Events & Fundraising Committee, said: “The club wants to give a special mention to all the local businesses that donated raffle prizes including Boclair House Hotel, Hynds Travel, Glengoyne Distillery, Cycle Form, FionaOutdoors, the Burnbrae Inn, the Monadh Kitchen, Douglas Park golf pro Robert Irvine, Dining Inn (Mother India), Shearer Candles, Iron Chef, Edenmill Farm, Bearsden Tyre Services, Lloyds Pharmacy and GWTennis." Glasgow Academy, which has schools in Milngavie, Newlands and Kelvinbridge, is gearing up for its annual entrance assessments. The high achieving independent school tests potential pupils in January for entrance to the next academic year at the Kindergartens, Prep Schools and Senior School. Milngavie, Newlands and Kelvinbridge are the locations of three Glasgow Academy kindergartens and prep schools and Kelvinbridge is home to the Senior School campus.

While the school promotes an “all-round education and development of the whole child”, pre-entrance testing is also key to the school’s ethos. Steven Dignall, Director of Development, said: “The aim is for children to thrive in an environment where high expectations are the norm – and testing plays a vital part in helping to ensure this.”

The school's athletes also excelled with a record 30 internationalists across many sports disciplines and including three each in girls' hockey, rugby and tetrathlon and six in rowing. On top of this, the school’s Saunders Centre – a new centre for science and food technology – won the RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award. Steven added: “The architect's attention to detail was supported by an open and consultative culture that included listening to how pupils wanted to learn and socialise in the new building.” See www.theglasgowacademy.org.uk

Westerton Male Voice Choir will entertain with two Christmas concerts this festive season. Due to popular demand, the choir has decided to host two evenings, on Thursday December 14 and Friday December 15, at New Kilpatrick Church in Bearsden. Both Christmas Concerts start at 7.30pm and the price of a ticket is £10 from choir members, by calling 0141 956 5868 or at the door.

Alistair Angus from the choir said: “We are delighted that we are able to offer two concerts this year to cope with the steadily increasing size of our audiences. “The concerts give an opportunity to experience the power and subtlety of a male voice choir singing in four parts in a variety of styles

and composers, from Handel's Hallelujah Chorus to Little Saint Nick by The Beach Boys.” The concerts will be led by musical director Bryan Marshall and will feature the choir’s smaller group, The Westertones. Alistair added: “The concerts will also support our chosen charity, Prostrate Scotland, which has just won the Health Charity of the Year award in the Charity Champions Awards.” In other news, Westerton Male Voice Choir’s accompanist Gillian Daly recently graduated as a master in piano accompanist and has taken up a position at Glasgow High School.

Research has found that young people who smoke usually get their tobacco from friends and family. Evidence also reveals these these adults think they are “doing them a favour”. In response, the #notafavour campaign will make it clear that those helping under-18s to get cigarettes are also helping them into addiction, ill-health and financial problems. The campaign, which has been developed by Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) Scotland and the Society of Chief Officers of Trading Standards in Scotland, is being supported by East Dunbartonshire Tobacco Alliance and the council.

The Clean Sweep Branch of Milngavie in Bloom fought off stiff competition to win a top prize as part of an anti-littering campaign. The contest was organised by the Keep Scotland Beautiful exhibition #SipDontTip. Communities in Scotland were challenged to take photographs of drinks litter and cup lids discarded in their local areas. These artworks became part of an exhibition at Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow, to highlight the problems of single use drinks containers. The Clean Sweep Branch of Milngavie in Bloom was

delighted to win first place for its submission, “The morning after the night before”. The photo was taken by dedicated volunteer Frankie Livingston. With Milngavie being the start of the West Highland Way, the group is faced with cleaning up a number of littered sites not far from the path. It’s hoped the photo will raise awareness of the issues faced locally as part of the bigger national picture.

As the winners, Milngavie in Bloom receives a professionally designed campaign collateral pack, to support them with their anti-littering activities locally. Nicola Turner, Community Projects Officer at Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “I would like to congratulate Milngavie in Bloom for its creative and thought provoking entry.” Last month, Milngavie in Bloom also received a Community Champion award from Milngavie Community Council in recognition and appreciation of the efforts of their dedicated volunteers to make Milngavie a cleaner, greener place to live. House to Host festive lunCHes

Senior Savvy with Suhail Rehman

This month: CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS

Local residents are invited to celebrate Christmas in style at a series of festive lunches at Kilmardinny House in Bearsden. Christmas lunches will be served in the new garden pavilion extension on Thursdays and Fridays on December 7 and 8, 14 and 15 and 21 and 22. There are plans for live music to start with followed by a three course meal, as well as mince pies and Christmas crackers. The lunches are being organised by East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture (EDLC) Trust and specialist caterers Elior. Councillor Jim Gibbons, Convener of the Council's Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets Committee, said: “The Christmas lunches provide people with an opportunity to enjoy first-class festive fare and to see

the newly-improved Kilmardinny House. “There are also plans to provide a platform for talented young musicians from the local area to perform at the lunches.” Sandy Marshall, Chair of EDLC Trust, believes the lunches will be popular. He said: “It's important for Kilmardinny's ongoing sustainability that we cater for a range of uses, from commercial events to arts and cultural bookings.” Tickets are £14.95 per person and places are limited. For more information and to book, email chloe.halliday@elior. co.uk or call 0141 777 3090/3096.

Yes – it’s that most wonderful time of year again! I was recently chatting with a lovely elderly client of Home Instead and we got talking about how Christmas seems to arrive earlier every year. As we reminisced this lady shared some intriguing history behind some festive traditions. In the past some very strange things were eaten around Christmas. At lavish Christmas feasts in the Middle Ages, swans and peacocks were served. It was not until the austerity of Victorian times that roasted turkey, which remains the tradition today, was first served. The forerunner of the Christmas pudding was called Frumenty and was served in medieval times. The pudding became specifically associated with Christmas when

it was introduced to the Royal Christmas dinner table by Prince Albert. Mince Pies were often known as Christmas pies, they were banned in the seventeenth century but came back into existence after the Restoration. If the mincemeat is homemade everyone in the household should stir it as it is considered to be lucky. Christmas Carols have their roots in medieval England, when minstrels travelled from castle to castle. In addition poor people would bring their mugs to the doors of rich houses hoping for a share of hot ale with sugar, eggs, spices and roast apples floating in it. Have a wonderful Festive season folks and I look forward to welcoming you all in the New Year!

Top actor Bill Paterson has joined forces with music legends Phil Cunningham and Aly Bain to help save a famous Loch Lomond attraction. The celebrities have created a short film about the UK’s last paddle Steamship, Maid of the Loch, to coincide with the launch of a new crowdfunding campaign. The aim is to raise £125,000 over six weeks to buy and install the special steam boiler that will power the Maid’s engine and once again allow her to sail the loch.

The six-week campaign ends on December 7 and it’s hoped that people will continue to donate right until the end. In the new film, Paterson, whose roles include Outlander, Shetland and Dad’s Army, brings his flair for story-telling to the tale of Maid of the Loch. As Bill takes viewers on a tour of the ship, Phil & Aly

Paterson said: “The Maid has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity right now to sail again, thanks to a generous pledge from the Heritage Lottery Fund. There has been a long running bid to raise the funds to restore her. But few may realise that right now this is not just a long-held dream, it is a very real possibility. “However, Heritage Lottery Fund’s commitment of £3.8 million funding is only a pledge that will be awarded if Maid of the Loch’s charity, Loch Lomond Steamship Company, can raise £1 million. That’s where this campaign comes in and why Phil, Aly and I made this film.” To watch the film and donate before December 7 see www. crowdfunder.co.uk/maid-to-sail. The public is also requested to share the film and www. maidoftheloch.org with the hashtag #MaidtoSail

IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS

COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.

But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:

"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."

"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
