MEN SING OUT FOR FESTIVE CONCERT ensure that the choir would last for at least another 60 years. “Plans were put in place to help increase membership, audience numbers and awareness of just how beneficial singing can be. This is exactly what has happened.
The Westerton Male Voice Choir at a recent concert with musical director Bryan Marshall
Six hundred people are expected to book tickets for the Westerton Male Voice Choir’s popular annual Christmas concert this month. The Spirit of Christmas concert will take place in New Kilpatrick Church, Bearsden, on Thursday December 13 and Friday December 14. The concert has now become a festive stalwart event for residents of East Dunbartonshire and beyond with the choir expecting to welcome 300-strong audiences each night. Bryan Marshall is the musical director of WMVC and also the founder and lead of SING aLOUD, a series of singing
groups open to all adults and without need for auditions. Bryan said: “The Westerton Male Voice Choir has been working very hard to prepare for the event and we are looking forward to giving their loyal audience a great night of festive song plus a few wee surprises. Bryan added that he is proud of how far the choir has grown and developed in recent years. He said: “As the choir approached its 60th birthday in 2017, we were very keen to
“One important part of this plan was that the choir became a registered charity with its aim being to promote the health, mental and social benefits of male voice singing. “We are delighted to have now achieved this status, which fits well with the choir’s motto, ‘Brothers, Sing On!’
Lights events in Westerton on November 30 and in Milngavie on December 1. They will also be singing at their annual charity carol singing event in Waitrose Milngavie on Sunday December 9, from 1pm to 4pm. For tickets see www.wmvc.scot or call 0141 956 5868. The concerts are suitable for families. Also see www. singaloud. co.uk.
Tickets for this year’s concert are priced £10, including refreshments. The choir is also supporting the chosen charity of 2018, Prostate Scotland. In addition, the choir has been working closely with the charity to not only raise money but also to increase awareness about prostate cancer in men. So far the choir have raised more than £7000. This time of year is a busy one for the men of the choir as they have also been booked to perform at the Christmas

Bearsden and Milngavie Ramblers and Hillwalkers have been enjoying a celebratory year with a range of special events and walks. This year marked the group’s 30th anniversary and the celebrations started on a sunny weekend in May. More than 50 members travelled to Braemar, where they enjoyed a wide variety of walks.

The 2018 Championships took place at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge International Sports Centre from October 26 to 28. OPEN DAY AT PLAYGROUP A Bearsden pre-school playgroup is celebrating this month with a special open day at its new home – and a Christmas fayre. Maxholme Preschool Playgroup was threatened with having to close after losing its premises at Bearsden Baptist Church earlier this year. We reported in May how the group was hoping to relocate to the 24th Bearsden Scout Hall but they needed more than £10,000 to meet upgrades required by the Care Inspectorate. A fund-raising effort by children and parents at Maxholme successfully secured the money and the group is now happily relocated to the scout hall on Jubilee Path, off Roman Road. The fund-raising included a sponsored Toddle Waddle, a
Just Giving page and a 50th Anniversary Summer Fundraising Fayre. Support also came from a donation from Bearsden East Community Council, the Waitrose Community Matters Fund and the Flight Path Fund. Alix Edmonds, Secretary at Maxholme, said that the group was also grateful for the help provided to upgrade the hall. She said: “The community pulled together and both parents and local businesses helped us to build and upgrade the space as required after we had the funds. Direct Line sent a group of volunteers to help with this and the Milngavie and Bearsden
Men’s Shed also helped, as well as A.I.M 2 Please Building Services.” The Open Day and Christmas Fayre on Sunday December 2, from noon to 3pm, offers the chance to visit the new venue, to buy local artisan crafts and to enjoy homebaking. Alix said: “We’re delighted to have a new home for our playgroup. On the open day, part of the hall will be set up as we have it on normal nursery days giving kids somewhere to play but also allowing potential new starts to get a feel for the place. “There are still places available for children aged two-and-a-half to five years old and as a partnership nursery with East Dunbartonshire Council we have fully funded spaces available as well as accepting child care vouchers.” See www.maxholme.co.uk

The bench, which is part of a wider project to improve and enhance the environs of the Community Centre, has been financed by he Milngavie Community Council (MCC).
(MCDT), as well as with children from the Time Out Club. Unfortunately, Jackie Gillespie, an East Dunbartonshire Council officer, who has been a supporter and source of expertise to MCDT, could not attend.
It was installed under the balcony at the centre in September and has been much used by children from the Time Out Club.
The Trust has previously collaborated with East Dunbartonshire Council to install a new swan island at the pond next to the community centre, as well as putting in 350 native species. In October, EDC replaced the pumps serving the fountain and
Last month, an inauguration of the bench was attended by Councillor Jim Goodall, members of the MCC and Milngavie Community Development Trust
Fiona Crosbie, a director of the Trust and a driving force behind the new swan island, said: “MCC were keen to contribute to the improvements in the area around the centre and the pond and offered to finance a children’s activity bench. “The bench, constructed of recycled plastic and delivered in September has been well used since it arrived. The children chose the game boards attached to the bench, voting for Connect 4 and Ludo.” Celeste Gilbey, who is the manager at the Time Out Club, reports that the children use the table every day.

The Merry Milngavie Christmas Event takes place in the town centre on December 1.
The events start with the church choir performing “Words and Music for Advent” on Sunday December 2 at 6.30pm.
Children and parents can meet Santa and his sleigh drawn by Cairngorm reindeers.
On Wednesday December 5, at 11am, there will be a Nursery Christmas Celebration.
Hosts for the event are Robin and Adele from Heart Radio's breakfast show and there will be performances from local talent and X Factor contestant Emily Middlemas.
Catherine Frew, the church secretary, said: “The Nursery Christmas Celebration is a short kindergarten-age-friendly Christmas service, followed by seasonal hospitality of mince pies and other nibbles.
Kids can visit Santa’s grotto at the Waypoint, beside the Youth Café, and there will be balloon modelling, cake decorating and lots of other entertainment throughout the day. See Milngavie - Try it, Live it, Love it on Facebook.

“It is attended by New Kilpatrick Nursery Group and New Kilpatrick Baby & Toddlers Group and any other families of under-fives who would like to join us.” The traditional Gift Service takes place on Sunday December 9 at
Catherine said: “The Light Festival is a community celebration of the Christmas story, using lanterns created in the workshop beforehand.” The Watchnight Service on Christmas Eve is at 11.30pm and on Christmas Day the All-Age Christmas Worship event takes place at 10.30am. See www.nkchurch.org.uk.

MARK LIFTS RECORD DOUBLE Mark, who attended Bearsden Academy, squatted 365 kilos, which means he is the first Scottish person to squat more than 800lbs (362 kilos) unassisted. He also benchpressed 207.5 kilos and dead lifted 347.5 kilos.

His total for the competition was 920 kilos, which was also the biggest total by a Scot unassisted. He said: “In the competition I gave it my absolute all. I wouldn’t disrespect any other competitor and say it wasn’t hard fought.
A 23-year-old Bearsden powerlifter has set two new Scottish records on his way to winning his first British senior title. Mark Macqueen triumphed at the British Championships in Portsmouth recently. It was his first competition as a senior and he set the Scottish records for squat lifting and for an “overall total”. Last year, as a junior, he won World, European and Commonwealth titles.
Mark said: “It felt brilliant to win my first senior championships, after winning three major junior titles in 2017. “In particular it felt great to be the world champion, but I didn’t want that to be a defining moment as I wanted to do so much more. This senior win is a step in the right direction to achieve that.”
“I gave my all – and came away with a good win.” Mark is now focusing on his next competition, the Senior European Championships, this month. In 2019, he will enter his first senior World Championships. Mark trains at Physique and Power barbell in Rutherglen and OBS in Clydebank. You can keep track of Mark’s achievements at www.facebook.com/ markmacqueen2010.

PRACTISE YOGA FOR CHARITY NAPIER& CO A new yoga group will be running two charity classes this month in a bid to help people less fortunate than others during the festive period. Karen Elle Yoga, which has recently launched Vinyasa flow yoga classes in Westerton, will ask students at the December 12 and 15 sessions to donate food or toys for the Drumchapel foodbank rather than paying for the class. Yoga teacher Karen Elizabeth said: “I wanted to do something to give back to the local community and the foodbank fundraiser is poignant at this time of year. “I hope that everyone will be able to donate something but if not they can pay for the class I’ll simply donate the equivalent amount.” The Karen Elle Yoga classes take place at Westerton Fairlie Memorial Parish Church on Saturdays from 8.30am to 9.30am and 10am to 11am, as well as Wednesdays from 7.40pm to 8.40pm.
Vinyasa flow is one of many styles of yoga practice and focuses on flowing through each posture and synchronising this movement with the breath. Karen says: “Vinyasa Yoga is a great way to improve strength, flexibility and posture. This will improve your all-round fitness
and can help with weight loss as part of a healthy diet.
“In addition, the practice of yoga is beneficial for the mind and can teach you how to approach all kinds of situations in life with calmness.” To find out more see KarenElleYoga on Facebook. Other yoga classes in the area include: Yoga with Manjulika: Yoga for Men on Tuesdays, 7-8pm, at Bearsden Hub; Gill’s Yoga on Fridays, 10.1511.15am in Milngavie Town Hall, and Wednesdays 7.30pm for yoga strength and flexibility at St Andrews Church Hall and also Yoga with Pearl Wednesdays 10-11am at the Hub.

GREAT GIFTS AT MAKERS MARKETS If you are looking for creative gifts for Christmas a series of craft markets could be the ideal place to visit. There will be two markets in Milngavie Town Hall this month. The Milngavie Makers Markets take place on Saturdays, December 1 and 22, from 11am to 3pm. The markets include a wide range of arts and crafts stalls. On December 1, Heather Laing Art will be one of the sellers. The artist and illustrator said: "I sell cards, prints, badges and other gift items such as pocket mirrors, key rings and fridge magnets. All items are printed with my original designs.” In addition, Milngavie Makers Markets are hosting three Nice

This month: FIT TESTING... In Scotland all people over 50 are sent a kit to test their poo to help early detection of possible bowel cancers. Thursday Markets at Merchants House, 7 West George Street in Glasgow. They will take place on December 6, 13 and 20 from 5pm to 8pm. The Milngavie Makers Market was founded by Jessica Stafford Cameron, a children’s book illustrator, in March 2016. She said: “I knew there was a lot of local arts and crafts talent locally and I thought it would be great to have a place where we could display and sell our work on a regular basis.” Stall holders can apply to milngaviemakersmarket@gmail. com. See Milngavie Makers Market on Facebook.
The new “FIT” (Faecal Immunochemical Test) test gives a more accurate result which is not affected by medicines or food intake, indicates severity of hidden bleeding and importantly, is much easier to use than the original kits. Already the bowel screening teams are seeing increased return rates from people, increasing early detection, and survival from bowel cancer. So far 5,000 cancers have been diagnosed
and treated from 2.2 million people contacted to take the test. However I was surprised to learn that only 6 out of 10 people return samples, given that it is such a simple test. I wondered if sometimes people are simply too busy, and put the kits to one side, then forget to go back to them, or lose them? If you are one of these people, or know someone who hasn’t responded then it’s worth taking action. If you contact 0800 0121 833 or look up www.nhsinform. scot/bowelscreening and they will send a new kit. It’s never too late!

Wandering around the local shops in search of inspiration it occurred to me that it is a far more pleasant experience than shuffling in the city or the mall (writes Nick Cowie). There’s the serendipity element of seeing someone or something you haven’t seen for a while and you can also allow yourself a wee pat on the back for helping the local economy because buying locally, according to research carried out by the Chambers of Commerce helps everyone.
A recent report stated: “Every pound that leaves your area is largely lost to your community, in fact research suggests that every single pound you spend gets recycled so well by local communities that it ends up being worth ÂŁ3 to the wider community. Local business owners too are more likely to
get involved and to contribute to community efforts. We’ve all heard the tales of hard times on the high street, but there’s strong evidence that more people are consciously deciding to eat at locally owned restaurants and buy from locally owned stores and shops.

A Sense of Christmas | December 2018
It was a trend noted by the British Independent Retailers Association which reported that more traditional independent shops opened than were closed in Britain’s town centres, whilst the national chains continued to see a fall. Savvy shoppers` know that shopping locally is not in any way an inferior choice. Independent shops often stock items which are made locally and aren't available elsewhere. Buy a dress or a handbag or unusual gift item by a fledgling designer and there is a real sense of having made a special effort to be different from the herd. Your independent trader should be able to recommend products and give you the story behind them. It makes the retail
experience that much more pleasant. You’ll be doing your bit for the environment too. When you shop at local butchers, bakers, farm shops and greengrocers, or indeed eat in local restaurants it is also likely that a decent percentage of the produce has had a short field-to-fork journey. In fact some of the shops take a particular pride in sourcing within 50 or fewer miles. Along with supporting local farmers, it means the food is likely to contain more nutrients, have less packaging and have used up less diesel getting here. So when did you last really look around your local area. I’ll bet you’ll surprise yourself at the range of goods and services
on offer. Jewellery and gifts, accessories, hardware, delis, furniture, antiques, crafts, galleries, china, crystal ware, fashion, flowers, shoes as well as the butcher, baker, and probably somewhere a candlestick maker are complemented by hairdressers, beauticians, opticians, pharmacists, and when your feet get sore there’s your favourite local café on hand to dispense a well earned coffee and cake. Whatever your Christmas tradition, make it a fun one. And include checking out your local retailers for food and presents. You’ll save fares, petrol and pollution – and if you do get it wrong, it’s not so far to go to change the present for something else.

This month: SEPARATION
LISTEN IN – AND HAVE YOUR SAY Local people are invited to attend Milngavie Community Development Trust’s Annual General Meeting this month. The aim of the meeting in the Fraser Centre on Wednesday December 12 at 7pm is to show members, and anyone else who is interested, what the trust has been doing in 2018 – as well as plans for next year. Wilson Blakey, the trust's vice chair, said: “Topics to be covered will include the CE Centre pond, Milngavie Week, the cycling event, research into renewable energy and ideas for Lennox Park. “We will also welcome suggestions for future improvements to Milngavie.” See info652106.wixsite.com/mcdt
Separating from a spouse or partner is always going to be emotionally difficult, whether the split is acrimonious or not. The decision to separate can have a number of significant consequences. As well as impacting on your living arrangements, you may have financial commitments or children together. In circumstances where there are children of the relationship, then reaching agreement regarding their care and welfare arrangements will generally take priority. This is fairly obvious. Secondary to that, but just as obvious, is addressing financial matters and division of any assets. Unfortunately, in the current climate it may well be that debts outweigh any
assets and therefore liability for those debts will require to be resolved. Once these big matters have been discussed, it is important that the less obvious tasks are not forgotten about. This can include ensuring you remember to change the terms of your will or changing the beneficiary of any death benefits from your pension. It is unlikely that it would be appropriate for a former partner to make decisions on your behalf should you lose capacity. As a result, a Power of Attorney may require to be revoked. These are only a couple of examples. Therefore, no matter the circumstances of separation it is important that you speak to your solicitor and receive relevant advice.

Total Swimming Academies – with lessons available at Boclair Academy, Bearsden – was formed over 10 years ago by Olympic medallist and Chair of Swim Safe, Steve Parry. With around 1 in 2 children leaving primary school unable to swim in the UK, Steve’s mission was to create swimming opportunities for all children aged 3-11, resulting in happier, healthier and safer communities.
ensuring the process is convenient for parents and fun for children. Discussing the programme, Parry says: “Giving every child in the community the opportunity to Learn to Swim is something I am passionate about. Swimming is such a vital skill and should be made available to everyone, which is exactly what Total Swimming is achieving and continues to deliver.
Total Swimming prides itself on creating engaging lessons in a safe environment, so children can enjoy themselves while learning an essential life skill.
With the help of a fantastic team of truly talented teachers, we give a first class Learn to Swim journey that I’m proud to offer to our swimmers and their parents.”
Small class sizes, fully qualified teachers and online progression monitoring are just some of the ways in which Total Swimming make the Learn to Swim journey the best it can possibly be –

YOUNG ACTOR IN LINE FOR TV AWARD
SUCCESS OF DOUBLE DANDIYA NIGHTS
Senior Savvy with Suhail Rehman
This month: 2: SIGNS OF UTI IN THE ELDERLY Crucial signs of a UTI as the elderly can be easily missed as they have all the same symptoms as a younger person. Elderly people, however, may show NONE of the ‘normal’ signs. Instead they may experience flu-like symptoms whereas most younger people will not.
A former Bearsden Academy pupil has been shortlisted in a prestigious national TV awards. Daniel Kerr has made it on to the shortlist for best newcomer award at the upcoming National Television Awards. The nomination is for the 18-yearold’s role as James Coulter in Doctors. He is the only Scot in the list and he is up against talent from Coronation St and Eastenders. He plays autistic youngster, Jamie Coulter, in the BBC1 afternoon drama Doctors. The winners will be announced at NTA ceremony in January, which takes place at the O2 in London.
The following are the most common signs and symptoms of a UTI in older people: • Short of breath • Cloudy or foul• Painful urination • Confusion and smelling urine • Burning while Dizziness • Blood in urine urinating • Cough • Tenderness in back, • Lower abdominal • Nausea and vomiting under the ribs ache or cramps (kidneys) • Urgency or frequent • Fevers and chills need to urinate In older people with Dementia ,UTI’s can cause dementia symptoms to be heightened especially overnight. Things to look out for are: • Cognitive difficulties • Hallucinations
• Confusion and delirium • Unusual insomnia or excessive sleepiness
Two traditional dance nights in Milngavie have been hailed a huge success. The Gujarati Society Glasgow organised the Dandiya Nights in October at the Milngavie Town Hall. Some 250 people attended both nights and enjoyed dancing to their favourite Garba & Dandiya Raas songs with accompaniment from the seven-piece Symphony Live Band. The events were part of a celebration of the Hindu festival of Navratri.
If coupled with other symptoms such as fever, nausea, cough or dizziness contact your doctor or take your loved one to hospital as soon as possible. Don’t assume it is simply the dementia ‘taking a turn for the worse’ especially if the onset is very sudden.
Piush Patel, a spokesperson for the nights, said: “We were delighted with the number of people who came.
Untreated UTI can enter the kidney and cause further illness and sepsis can occur if the infection spreads.
“It was our biggest band ever and everyone, adults and children, had a great time.”

MORE CARE FOR CHILDREN consultation and parental advisory service.”
An unique independent paediatric healthcare clinic is now accepting new patients on a firstcome-first-served basis. MERAS Children’s Healthcare is the only private paediatric service that is licensed and registered with Healthcare Improvement Scotland to provide healthcare to babies and children of all ages in the independent sector. Founded four years ago by a specialist paediatric consultant, it has recently seen an increase in demand for its services. The founder states: “Although places are limited, we have taken on a team of staff,
including a full multi-disciplinary team of children’s healthcare professionals, so we can welcome more families that need our support. “We offer a wide range of services for children from birth to 16 years old, including advice on allergies, child development and feeding. We also offer immunisations, including those not routinely available in the UK, as well as parental training workshops and even an online
There are several groups of people for whom access to an independent paediatric healthcare specialist is vital, including foreign nationals and ex-pats who may not able to use public health services in the UK. For other patients, they may wish to be seen more urgently by a children’s healthcare professional, if their local waiting list is deemed too long, or they may simply be seeking a second opinion.” MERAS Children’s Healthcare is a not-for-profit organisation, which means that any funds generated are put back into the service to improve quality of patient care. The clinic also aims to donate funds to children’s charities. The founder says: “The aim is to keep costs lean to ensure as many people as possible can access a children’s doctor or therapist whenever required, in a timely and cost-effective manner.” To find out more and for your nearest clinic see www.private-paediatrician.com or call 0141 387 1079.

The DCB Christmas Concert for Children will take place at the Royal Hospital for Children, where youngsters will be entertained by a 50-piece band. David Broad, Chairman of DCB, said: “Listening to live music is known to speed recovery from illness, which is one of the reasons why the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital puts on the Atrium Concert Series. “Dunbartonshire Concert Band is only too willing to assist in some small way and we are all looking forward to performing the concert this Christmas.”

The orchestra will be encouraging children to participate in the event and to ask questions about the musical instruments. David said: “For example, our percussion section will be looking for some willing volunteers, from children or perhaps ‘grown up children’, to assist with sleigh bells. “On Dunbartonshire Concert Band’s last visit to the hospital a member of the audience very successfully conducted the band
