RUNNER BREAKS MARATHON RECORD Photos © Loch Ness Marathon / Paul Campbell
Milngavie runner Katie White was first female across the line at the Loch Ness Marathon with a new course record time, while her mum Ann White (inset) came first in the FV60 age category in the sister 10k race
A Milngavie runner has smashed the women’s record in a recent Scottish marathon, while her mum came home with her own gold medal. Katie White, 38, was first female at the Loch Ness Marathon 2019 in a course record time of 2 hours, 42 minutes and 3 seconds.
Katie was 10 minutes ahead of the next female runner up at the Loch Ness Marathon 2019 and she placed sixth overall.
Meanwhile, 68-year-old Ann White was first in the FV60 age category of the sister 10k race, also held in Inverness in October. Both mum and daughter train with local club, the Garscube Harriers.
Katie joined Garscube Harriers in 2011 and Ann, who took up running at the age of 61, followed in her footsteps six years ago. They both ran the Inverness half marathon earlier this year and in 2018. Katie was second in 2019 and won it in 2018.
Katie said: “It was my first time running the Loch Ness Marathon and although it is not my fastest marathon time – that is 2 hours 40 minutes – I was really pleased with my time.”
She had run six marathons before competing at the Loch Ness Marathon. Her first was just seven years ago in Liverpool.
Katie said: “The Loch Ness course is hillier than previous marathons I’ve done and because there were fewer runners running at a similar pace to me, it made it a lot more difficult to pace. “The week before the marathon I also raced the Great Scottish Run, during which I won the Scottish Half Marathon Championship. “It’s not something to be recommended just before a marathon because I should have been taking it easy.
“I really enjoyed the event and I thought it was very well organised. I loved the route through beautiful scenery.” Ann, who lives in Buchlyvie, described the conditions on the day of their Loch Ness races as good. She said: “I was aiming for 45 minutes and managed a few seconds over that so I was very pleased. I was also delighted to be first FV60. “After my race, I waited at the finish and I was very proud to see Katie crossing the finishing line and breaking the women’s course record.”

Two pantomime shows start at 1pm and 4pm and the cost will be £5 per head to help cover costs only. Businesses have the chance to enjoy the festivities, too, with 125 mini Christmas trees being handed out in association with Milngavie BID. The tree that is judged to be the best decorated will win a prize.
The countdown to Christmas in Milngavie is well under way with a programme of fun entertainment for all the family this month. A festive lights switch-on and reindeer parade launched the activities on November 30 and local children were also invited to take part in a Naughty Elf Trail, which continues until December 14. Spot the elves throughout the town after collecting a free trail booklet at Milngavie Tesco. There are prizes up for grabs, including a £100 Milngavie Gift Card. Then, on December 8, a Mother Goose “pop-up pantomime”
arrives at Finsbay LOFT in Stewart Street. The panto tells the story of poor old Mother Goose, who is struggling to grow old gracefully.
The card works in the same way as department store or shopping centre gift cards, except it focuses on Milngavie. Buy from Reid’s of Milngavie, Elba Artisan Gallery, Besotted and Avec Panache, or see www.milngavie giftcard.co.uk.
She’s tried every cream and moisturiser in the Avon catalogue but to no avail.

Bearsden Primary School has earned the Unicef (UK) Rights Respecting School Silver Award
A local primary school is the latest to announce the achievement of a special award for focusing on children’s rights. Bearsden PS has earned the Unicef (UK) Rights Respecting School Silver Award, an accolade that is presented to schools that create safe and inspiring places to learn with children’s rights at the heart of activities.

She said: “The school ensured that the values were developed from different articles about rights and that the whole community was involved in finding the right values to represent our community. The children also designed a mascot called Rights Respecting Rocky. “Rocky is a huge part of our children's learning as he represents them and their rights.” Over the next year, Bearsden PS will continue to work towards gaining a Unicef gold award. Helen said: “We are developing a further understanding of rights and we are starting to take action to become ‘global citizens’ and to take steps towards helping solve community and world issues.” See www.unicef.org.uk.

YOGA FOR LIFE AND CHARITY A generous yoga teacher has launched new classes for complete beginners in Bearsden – and she donates all profits to charity. for our long-term health later in life and I want to encourage people of all ages and especially those in their later years to enjoy yoga.
Lindsay Bunch (pictured) leads the Active Living with Yoga sessions at the Lesser Hall at Bearsden Hub on Fridays from 10.30am to 11.30am. The cost is £5 with profits, once the hall has been paid for, going to charities, such as the Children’s Hospices Across Scotland. Lindsay, who donates her time and teaching for free, explains her yoga classes. She said: “Yoga can feel intimidating to some people and classes are often associated with slim and bendy young people. However, research shows that yoga can be even more beneficial
“I know it sounds corny but I strongly feel that yoga is a gift to the world and I offer these classes, without taking payment for myself, as a way to improve the health and happiness of the community. The more people who attend the classes, the better it is for their health and also the more money I can give to different charities.”
The yoga sessions are aimed at “healthy ageing”. Lindsay said: “Most people want to be able to continue to enjoy their favourite activities for as long as possible, whether it’s golf, skiing, walking or stamp collecting and to be able to deal with those niggly little aches and pains that can sneak up on us now and again. “My yoga for healthy ageing classes combine gentle exercise, good breathing, relaxation and mindfulness. Yoga improves posture, balance, strength and flexibility.” Classes are accessible to all and the exercises can be done sitting or standing. Mats are provided and the first lesson is free. See Active Living with Yoga on Facebook or call: 07538 504779.

VOTES ON FOR BEAUTIFUL TOWN Milngavie was thrilled to have been shortlisted in a competition to find Scotland's Most Beautiful High Street 2019. The town is one of eight Scottish towns to make the final list last month in the contest organised by Keep Scotland Beautiful and Scotland’s Towns Partnership. Each entry was submitted by a local organisation and showcases what makes the town special. The winner is chosen by a public vote and will be revealed after this magazine goes to press. The competition takes a broad understanding of the word “beautiful” with entries being judged on factors such
as horticultural achievement, environmental responsibility and community participation. Milngavie’s entry, presented by Milngavie BID, highlighted the work that has been done to make the town beautiful. This includes the recent achievement of a Keep Scotland Beautiful Gold Award; the development of the digital asset, Milngavie. co.uk; and the introduction of the Milngavie Gift Card. Also highlighted as making Milngavie “beautiful” is the
programme of many free events that take place in the community, such as the 50th anniversary of Milngavie Week in 2020, the Classic Car Show; the Food and Drink Festival; the Healthy Habits fitness festival; the Walking Festival; the Hallowe’en Parade; Christmas Lights Switch on and Window Wanderland. Tony l’Anson, of Milngavie BID, said: “The fact that Milngavie has been shortlisted is an achievement, but we also hope to win the public vote.” See www.scotlandstowns.org/ scotlands_most_beautiful_high_ street.

NEWS ON GARDEN WASTE CHOIR ADDS NEW SHOW TO FESTIVITIES Residents are being reminded that council collections of garden waste cease over the winter months, apart from a one-off pick up in January. In the meantime, garden waste can be taken to Mavis Valley Recycling Centre in Bishopbriggs. Councillor Billy Hendry, Convener of the Council’s Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets Committee, said: “During the winter the demand for garden waste collections reduces greatly as
people are less active in the garden and there is little plant growth.” Keep an eye on the council website for the January service and for the new 2020 Garden Waste calendar, which resumes in March. www.eastdunbarton.gov.uk/ residents/recycling-waste/binsand-recycling.

A local choir has launched a new afternoon concert as part of a popular series of festive performances this month. Last year, the Westerton Male Voice Choir welcomed more than 600 people to their two Spirit of Christmas concerts, which were held on two consecutive evenings. Now, to meet demand, they will now hold a new matinee show, too. The Christmas concerts will take place at New Kilpatrick Church in Bearsden on Friday December 13 and Saturday December 14 December at 7.30 pm. The matinee show will start at 1.30pm on the Saturday. A spokesperson for the 50-strong male-only choir said: “We have an ever-increasing demand for
tickets and in recognition of the potential for further support, we are performing three concerts this year.” The concerts will also fund raise for the choir’s chosen charity, Alzheimer Scotland. The event sponsor is Massimo restaurant in Kirk Road, Bearsden, which is offering 10% off all food on presentation of a ticket on the concert nights. Tickets, priced £10, can be obtained from choir members, by email from sing@bryanmarshall.com or by phone: 0141 956 5868. Also see www.facebook.com/ westertonmalechoir.

December 2019 | What's Up Doc?
CAN YOU HOST AFTERNOON TEA? What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn This month:
A charity that is dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people is looking for volunteers. Re-engage in Bearsden and Milngavie would like to find local people who will open up their home and provide an afternoon tea on a Sunday in 2020.
two hours for six to eight older guests and three or four drivers.
The aim is to give isolated older people in the community a chance to meet others and to enjoy a chat, a cuppa and home-baking.
The only requirements for the volunteering role is a large teapot, a downstairs (ground floor) toilet and a house with easy access. Hosts are also asked to provide enough seating for eight older people.
Lisa McTaggart, the development officer for Re-engage in the west of Scotland, said: “We are appealing for volunteers who can spare one afternoon a year to provide afternoon tea in their home. “Hosts provide a warm welcome and a simple afternoon tea lasting
“Often hosts involve family and friends and welcome two or three generations.”
Lisa added: “Our hosts commit to one tea party a year or possibly more if they want to do so.” If you are interested in volunteering contact lisa. mctaggart@reengage.org.uk. Also see: www.reengage.org.uk.
HAVE YOURSELF A VERY HEALTHY CHRISTMAS…?
This festive season many people will gain weight, tipping themselves over into obesity, joining the 26% of the UK population who are already obese. The tradition of excess food and drink, which specialises in high fat and sugar foods (think mince pies and chocolates!), at Christmas unfortunately has health costs. Obesity leads to heart disease, arthritis, depression, poor sleep and diabetes, to name but a few diseases, but fortunately it is something which can be avoided or changed without medication. “Lifestyle Medicine” is a growing movement which tries to address lifestyle related choices and illness by helping

people regain control and enjoy better health, to avoid illness and prescriptions. The general idea is that time spent by doctors or nurses, either one-to-one or in groups, used to enable and empower people to make healthier choices, can slowly change peoples’ ideas and may be a long term way to reduce the burden on the NHS. The Lifestyle Medicine Global Alliance is an international group promoting this focussed approach. Recently the NHS Chief Executive said we need to “get serious about obesity or bankrupt the NHS” Maybe it’s time we changed our Christmas menus for some healthier options!

CLUB’S LEGACY FOR CHRIS competition to raise funds for the Beatson Cancer Charity. Having left funds to help with expenses, this year Allander Gymnastics’ floor and vault competition on December 8 at the Allander Sports Centre will be in aid of Beatson Cancer Charity.
Allander Gymnastics are organising a fund-raising competition in honour of head coach Chris Rankin, pictured, who passed away earlier this year
An annual gymnastics competition will raise funds for a cancer charity in memory of a head coach who passed away this year. For more than 30 years, Allander Gymnastics was honoured to have Chris Rankin lead the club. He joined his wife Isobel and daughter Aileen at the club in 1988 and brought a wealth of experience having coached at Glasgow Central Gymnastics Club and helped to establish Gemini Gymnastics Club. Chris was not only a coach, he was also a former Scottish junior
champion, tutor, judge, mentor, chair of the men’s technical panel and Scottish Gymnastics Board member. Last November, Scottish Gymnastics presented Chris with a lifetime achievement award. Sadly, Chris passed away in June after being diagnosed with cancer. He was very grateful for the care he received from The Beatson Hospital and he had often talked about organising a
NEW KITCHEN FOR A NEW YEAR
Jane McLaughlin, who is now the club’s head coach, said: “Chris has left a huge gap in the coaching team and the hearts of many coaches and gymnasts who had the privilege to work with him. He was an inspiration to many and up until early this year, he was still guiding coaches and gymnasts. “We have renamed this month’s annual competition as the Rankin Memorial in memory of Chris and his wife Isobel. Many of those involved have offered their services free and companies that we use to organise the event have agreed to help so that we can raise as much money as possible. “We are still looking for companies to offer raffle prizes and if anyone can help can they please get in contact.” Email: allandergc@googlemail.com.

At the other extreme we all know plenty of people who run round the shops in a state of near panic with only days to go – which is why so many shops stay open later on Christmas Eve: they know there are desperate potential buyers out there without a clue of what to buy for Auntie Jean or cousin Jimmy. On the one hand most of us don’t want to bowl through

UP One solution, for at least some gifts, is to buy entitlements which are useful but not dull. It could be an excursion in a hot air balloon, to be “cashed in” at any time over the next year, or it could be as simple as gift tokens for something really special… the sort of thing the person concerned wouldn’t normally treat themselves to. Don’t, however, buy someone membership of a gym – that could be taken entirely the

It allows people to find their own solution by coming together and discussing their respective views in a calm and constructive manner. The benefit of using a solicitor mediator is that you are then able to draw on their legal knowledge.
The only exception to this rule is in relation to any factual financial details exchanged between the parties, meaning specific values of assets and not the discussion regarding possible division of them. A local long-distance running race has launched a record-breaking cash prize – and announced a new headline sponsor. The West Highland Way Race, which starts in Milngavie every June, will hand out a £1500 prize to anyone who beats the previous records for the 95-mile route. The record times to date are 17 hours 16 minutes and 20 seconds set by Lucy Colquhoun in 2007 and 13 hours 41 minutes 08 seconds set by Rob Sinclair in 2017. At the same time, the popular ultra race, which takes place on June 20 and 21 in 2020, has partnered with Altra, a footwear
company. Altra replaces the previous title sponsor Ronhill, which will still be involved as a supporting partner. The WHW race heads into its 35th year and will again see runners competing on a non-stop run from Milngavie to Fort William in the Scottish Highlands. The 300 slots for the race are allotted through a ballot system because demand far out-strips places. Race Director Ian Beattie said: “We are delighted to welcome the Altra brand on board as
TRANSFORMATIONS
the race’s title sponsor. I know that many of the Scottish ultra running community are big fans of Altra’s trail running shoes. “Ronhill have been involved with the West Highland Way Race for many years and during this period have been an excellent and very supportive partner. It is great that this will continue, too.” Matt Bond from Outdoor Sports Company, which distributes Altra and Ronhill in the UK, has welcomed the new arrangement. He said: “We are delighted to continue our support of this iconic race.” See westhighlandwayrace.org.
