Friends of the reservoirs A support group, Friends of Milngavie Reservoir, has been working behind the scenes to progress repair and improvement projects. Walkers and runners at the popular outdoor space may have noticed the replacement and repainting of broken railings and other ironwork. Meanwhile, it’s hoped that other initiatives will see repair and improvements to footpaths that have deteriorated and or been damaged by flooding. The Friends group can be credited in being instrumental in pressing Scottish Water to meet its obligations to maintain the A-listed heritage site and commit to the undertakings given in a conservation and recreation management plan. The plan was drawn up by Scottish Water, working with local community groups, more than a decade ago at the time of the construction of the latest treatment plant.

Among other things, it recommended the improvement of footpaths, a woodland management programme, the establishment of a ranger service and additional car parking.

“This will include representatives from community organisations, including the Friends Group.

Alan Douglas, who is a member of the Friends Group, said: “We have already had some success in pushing forward various projects and now the latest development is the formation of a Liaison Group with Scottish Water.

The Mugdock and Craigmaddie reservoirs were constructed as part of the Glasgow Corporation Water Works that brings water to Glasgow from Loch Katrine. Operated purely on a gravity feed system, the scheme was

admired internationally as an engineering marvel when it was opened in 1860. The civic pride in the achievement was celebrated by the creation of beautiful parkland surrounding the reservoirs, which rapidly became a favourite venue for outings from the smoke-laden city. The dramatic success of the scheme in improving health enabled Glasgow Corporation to justify expenditure on other forms of public provision, including street lighting, refuse removal and public parks. As a result, the Water Works has international historic significance because it inspired a movement in which civic intervention mitigated the worst effects of the industrial revolution. Today, the reservoirs still provide a much-valued water supply and the paths and parkland surrounding them are well used by walkers and joggers who enjoy an easily accessible peaceful and traffic-free environment. zoe enJoYs a saFe win A pupil from Mosshead Primary School in Bearsden won East Dunbartonshire Council’s annual Road Safety Calendar Competition.

Convener of Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets, Councillor Jim Gibbons, said: “Our annual calendar competition helps children focus on what is a very important subject and at the same time raises their awareness of staying safe. The competition is now in its 20th year and still going strong. We received 4,241 entries this year and this made choosing a winner an extremely diffi cult task.

The slogan “Helmets keep you safe. Do you wear yours? was accompanied by a colourful image of school pupils on bikes wearing safety helmets and high-vis jackets.

Zoe Ward, a Primary 7 pupil, beat off competition from more than 4000 entries and 27 different schools across the region to be awarded the top accolade. Her message and design to encourage people to stay safe when cycling by wearing safety helmets caught the imagination of the judges.

Zoe’s design now features on thousands of calendars that have been distributed across East Dunbartonshire to remind people of the very important road safety message.

An ambitious musical project with a poignant health message is hosting a workshop and auditions for actors and actresses this month. Your Disco Needs You – The Musical is the brainchild of Neet Neilson, of Bearsden, who survived breast cancer. She said: “I wrote the musical a few years ago as a way to get across a message about exercise and its importance in relation to breast cancer, its prevention and how it can improve well-being and quality of life for patients and survivors. “The first production was in 2014 to great acclaim and now we are doing it for a second time this year. I hope that my musical, Your Disco Needs You, will raise awareness of the benefits of exercise in a subtle

A workshop for potential actors, both those that have prior experience and those new to the musical world, will be held on Sunday February 11, 10am to 4pm, at University of the West of Scotland – Paisley Campus (the location is still to be confirmed). Neet said: “The workshop is your chance to ask and hear more about characters and to learn audition songs and dances.â€? The following weekend there will be a two-day audition process,

most likely in the same location and from 10am to 4pm on February 17 and 18. Neet said: “For those that are chosen for various roles there will be rehearsal commitments of one evening per week – Tuesday from 6pm to 9pm – throughout June and every Tuesday and Thursday evening from August 6 until the show on October 25 to 28, 2018. The musical encompasses the songs of Kylie Minogue and is set around the struggles of ordinary people uniting in a mission to save a local dance studio hit by recession. New step for footballers WE SPIN Walking football has grown rapidly across the country in recent years and offers a more inclusive derivative of the sport. The game has many health benefits, both physical and mental, and aids social isolation and community cohesion. Walking football is also a good fit with many of the Scottish Government’s key physical activity targets.

A local walking football group is delighted by news of the creation of a new national support and coordination group for the sport. Walking Football Scotland has been developed as part of Scottish FA and will help to standardise the numerous interested parties, while also sharing good practice, exchanging ideas and developing the sport for more senior players. At Milngavie Football Club, secretary Caroline Diaz reports

a growing membership of the walking football sessions. She says: “Our group on a Monday is doing really well and I can see it growing now that there will be a Walking Football Scotland. “Each week we are getting new members and more are definitely welcome. The ages of players range from 54 to 82.”

Caroline says: “Apart from playing a game that many people have loved for so long, walking football is also fun, great for fitness and a good social get together. “Football is not just about the game, it is about being part of something bigger, and being part of a family that care.” See www.milngavie footballclub.co.uk to find out more about walking football. Caroline adds: “Football is for everyone now, not just boys playing football. We’ve sessions for girls, the disabled and all ages. It’s about different people all coming together.”

covered more than 18,000 miles. He averages more than 12km per day, but a recent operation meant that he cut this down to a 2km hobble for a few days.

Runstreak is a term used to describe people who run a minimum of one mile every day without fail. To join the Runstreak UK list you must have run 40 consecutive days already.

He says: “I’ve launched Runstreak UK after doing a search online to see how my longevity endeavours compared to others. I could only fi nd a few Americanbased Runstreak groups on Facebook. There didn’t seem to be any quality groups for UKbased Runstreakers.”

Stuart has been running every day for more than 2,350 days and during that time he has

The TrailFest group mileage is the equivalent of running from Milngavie to Istanbul, in Turkey, including crossing the famous Bosphorus Strait that splits the city. Until September 2017, TrailFest organised monthly trail runs of 5km and 10km in Mugdock Country Park and the surrounding area. Since then, the running movement has increased the popular social runs to encompass weekly night runs, as well as running sessions in new areas,

haggis lesson For Kids A Westerton mum, author and publisher is working in partnership with a local charity to assist children as they prepare for school. Katie McMillan has written and published three children’s books about Haggis MacDougall, a mouse with a very long tail. She explained: “The mouse Haggis in my books doesn’t like his long tail because it makes him feel different from the other mice. But through the course of the stories, he comes to realise that it is important to love himself the way he is.” Katie’s books were spotted by Nikki O’Hara from Home Start Glasgow North (as featured in the January edition), which is a local

charity that provides support to families that are experiencing difficulties. The core work of the charity is peer support but they are excited to be embarking on a new initiative called Big Hopes Big Future that engages parents with their children's early learning and play at home. This provides the foundation for children to realise their potential when they start school and supports the work done in nursery for transition to school. Nikki said: “We’re delighted to be working in partnership with Camstradden Primary school and local nurseries in Drumchapel to help children to get ready for progressing to school.

Smokers wanted for clinical trial comparing electronic cigarettes with nicotine replacement patches

S

mokers who would like to quit are being sought for a randomised controlled clinical trial in Glasgow. Doctors and scientists funded by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) are looking for 100 healthy volunteers to take part in The VAPOUR Pilot Study. The study aims to investigate the shortterm effects of electronic cigarettes in comparison to nicotine replacement patches on the blood vessels and lungs. Participants enrolled into the study will have an equal chance of being randomly assigned to receive either electronic cigarettes or nicotine replacement patches for 12 weeks. In addition they will all receive

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Smokefree weekly community smoking cessation support sessions in their local area. Participants will be invited to attend two study visits in the Clinical Research Facility at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow. Study tests include blood and urine samples, blood pressure and lung function assessment and non-invasive blood vessel ultrasound. These will be performed before and after 12-weeks of using the assigned nicotine replacement products. James Cant, Director at BHF Scotland, said: “We all know that smoking tobacco raises our risk of suffering from cardiovascular disease.

E-cigs have been hailed by some as a great way to help smokers quit but little is actually known about their impact on our heart and circulatory system, which is why we’re funding this research to help us better understand the effects on our health.” The VAPOUR pilot study is being run by Daniele Kerr who is a vascular surgeon and a BHF-funded Clinical Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow. She explained that: “Every day myself and many other healthcare professionals ask patients to stop smoking. The evidence shows that the public currently choose to use electronic cigarettes as their preferred method to help them stop smoking,

Researchers are seeking 100 volunteers to take part in the Vapour pilot

despite not being currently available on the NHS. This study has been designed to help healthcare professionals answer the question ‘what are the health effects of electronic cigarettes and should I use one to stop smoking?’”

February 2018 | What's up Doc?

happY new Year It’s worth a short train trip for a chance to celebrate new year all over again – Chinese style. Sunday, February 25 is the date of a special free series of events at the Kelvin Hall, Riverside Museum and Kelvingrove (noon to 4pm), featuring an afternoon of games, dance and play – and those

famous Chinese lions – in what promises to be one of the most fun outings of an otherwise still wintry month. Any of these three venues has the makings of a day out at most times of the year, but for this event they’ll also be the staging posts for a cultural event to remember.

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: FeMale inTUiTiOn…? Research published last month revealed that women are more likely to have their heart attacks misdiagnosed than men.

Fortunately in many of these cases, the women persevered to be listened to and eventually were diagnosed and treated in hospital.

The reasons suggested for this were that they are less likely to have the same “classic” symptoms with which we are all familiar, including central crushing chest pain, pain down the left arm and nausea.

It can be difficult to get diagnoses right first time, all the time, and we sometimes rely on people returning to the doctor when things “just don’t feel right” or if symptoms are not settling.

SASCO ART

It seems that women, particularly over the age of 60, have more subtle signs, such as shortness of breath, stomach pains, dizziness, jaw pain or mild aches in the chest. Some had been diagnosed with indigestion, panic attacks, muscular pains or toothache.

Kids learn good citizenship More than 30 pupils from Castlehill Primary in Bearsden have successfully completed a Junior Warden Scheme. The East Dunbartonshire Council project is designed to help children be responsible citizens and avoid antisocial behaviour. The P5 and P6 pupils took part in classroom lessons and external activities to learn about community safety and what it means to them, their families and their community. As part of the Junior Warden Scheme, fire officers from Milngavie Fire Station brought an appliance along to the school,

discussed fire safety with the children and taught them the crucial skills needed to administer CPR. Pupils also enjoyed talks from local Community Police Officers, an NHS Health Improvement Officer on tobacco and smoking as well as input from the Mugdock Ranger. Councillor Jim Gibbons, Convener of the Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets Committee, presented the children with certificates to recognise their hard work. He said: “The young people who take part in the Junior Warden Scheme are given the opportunity

to work with our partners in Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service which builds vital links and breaks down barriers. “By understanding the impact of antisocial behaviour on their community, neighbours and friends we hope pupils will be encouraged to make good choices.”

Awards for young learners Councillor Mohrag Fischer, Convener of the Council’s Education Committee presented the participants with their portfolio of awards in Kirkintilloch.

The learning and achievements of 23 young people and learners in East Dunbartonshire have been recognised in an awards project. The Positive Achievements Winter Awards initiative supports young people and learners into sustainable destinations by accessing jobs, education, training and volunteering opportunities.

The young people completed a range of programmes and qualifications that will provide them with invaluable life skills and experiences.

She said: “This is a wonderful project that helps young people who are facing significant challenges in their lives. Their achievements are inspirational.”

The obligation of aliment between spouses is extinguished upon divorce, in line with the ‘clean break’ approach. Aliment in relation to children is payable until the age of 18, or if under 25 and reasonably and appropriately undergoing instruction at an educational establishment, or training for employment or a trade, profession or vocation. Although still considered child aliment, anyone fitting within this category would require to raise the action themselves against the parent.

Book your chance to win Local schools are being encouraged to enter a nationwide competition as part of the celebration of World Book Day early next month. The World Book Day Award (WoBoD) returns for the fourth year with the chance to win book prizes that total £20,000. The contest is themed around the Flying Fergus series of books by Olympic cyclist Sir Chris Hoy (pictured), author Joanna Nadin and illustrator Clare Elsom. All three will join the judging panel and visit the winning school. For the first time in the history of the awards, every child that enters will also receive a certificate signed by the Flying Fergus trio.

To enter, pupils are required to create a display to show how their school is flying high with reading. They should also write a short paragraph explaining their entry and send photos of their creation. The award is one of the ways to get involved with the annual World Book Day, on March 1, which is acclaimed as the “world’s biggest celebrations of reading for pleasure”. Schools and nurseries across East Dunbartonshire will hold activities and events on the day.

TRANSFORMATIONS

Ann Davie, East Dunbartonshire Council's Depute Chief Executive – Education, People & Business, said: “World Book Day is an excellent opportunity to celebrate the many virtues of reading, particularly among our young people. I hope as many local children as possible can get involved – both in the competition and events on World Book Day itself. Local activities include pupils dressing up as their favourite literary characters and book-based events with East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture Trust.” See www.worldbookday.com and the trust’s website.

Dream Kitchen Makeover

with Suhail Rehman

This month: Loneliness in Hospital Experts in Kitchen Makeovers

Based on my personal and recent experience, I was admitted in hospital with a Meningitis Infection. My illness resulted in hospitalisation for over a week, in isolation.

Why replace perfectly good cupboards when you can transform your existing kitchen into your dream kitchen?

The Nurses and Doctors were beyond exceptional, my family were by my side, yet my ‘symptoms of isolation’ still appeared around 72 hours – ‘hours’ as every hour, every minute on a hospital clock is never ending. Usually a cheerful, sociable and confident person I could not help thinking of the other patients in this unusually silent ward.

After speaking to nurses, I learned that all my ‘silent neighbours’ were all elderly and indeed very isolated.

Loneliness is not only bad for the mind, leading to mental health problems but also increased risk of physical ill health and reduced illness recovery time. • • • • •

The new manager of Business Improvement District (BID) Milngavie has been announced as Liza Moran (pictured). She took up the position, working three days a week in the town centre office, on January 29. Liza comes from a role in economic development with Highlands and Islands Enterprise, assisting business clients across the sectors to achieve their growth ambitions. She said: “I am looking forward to working with the BID board, the businesses and community to explore the many opportunities that Milngavie has to offer, including events, showcasing our amazing businesses and people and, of course, highlighting the fantastic things to do in and around the area.”

Unique in this area, players are also welcome to attend the club even if they do not have a partner to play with. Peter added: “ The only restriction on attendance is that you must not be an SBU player above the rank of District Master.”

A keen local Bridge teacher has launched a club to encourage more people to enjoy the popular card game in a relaxed atmosphere. Peter Edmond, who has already established well-attended Bridge classes in Bearsden and Milngavie for learners, is running the new Bridge Club on Monday evenings in the Court Room in Milngavie Town Hall.
