RUNNING MUMS RAISE £10K FOR CHARITY help Alex, and kids like him, to fight this horrific illness.”
The participants of December's Marcothon, which raised £9888 for The Everest Centre, a specialist project within the Brain Tumour Charity and Bloodwise. Inset show Alex who has been battling brain tumours since he was three.
A group of 33 women in Milngavie raised an impressive £9,888 for two charities by running 5k – or 25 minutes – for 31 days in a row. The ladies joined the annual fitness campaign called the Marcothon. The brainchild of two Glasgow runners, Debbie and Marco Consani, Marcothon encourages people to run three miles, or for 25 minutes, whichever comes first, every day from December 1 to 31. The Milngavie Mums’ Marcothon group – as well as three more ladies from England and Dubai – were motivated to participate in order to raise money for The Everest Centre, which is a specialist
project within the Brain Tumour Charity researching slow growing brain tumours in children, and Bloodwise, which funds research to improve treatment for people with blood cancer. Both of these charities are poignant to the Marcothon Mums because they have helped children and families connected to the group. Linda Robertson, who came up with the idea, said: “I wanted something positive to focus on in
December and the Marcothon seemed perfect. I mentioned it to some local mums and it took off from there. “I also wanted to do something for my cousin’s young son Alex, who has battled brain tumours since he was three.
Linda also gave praise to the commitment of the Milngavie mums. She said: “The response for the Milngavie Mums Marcothon fundraiser has been overwhelming and heartwarming. It was a personal challenge and journey for everyone and we all somehow managed to run every day, in all weathers, in early mornings, late at night and around busy lives. “Our original target was just £400 and I can’t believe how much we have now raised.”
“He had a good year in 2018 but the latest scan showed a small growth, so Alex, now six, will need weekly chemotherapy, again, for the next 12 months.
The private sports centre, Nuffield Milngavie, also supported the charity bid by offering free entry to the Milngavie Mums’ Team throughout December.
“Hopefully the money we have raised will help to support research into new solutions to

JOIN WINDOW WANDERLAND Local people can look forward to the transformation of Milngavie business windows into a “magical outdoor gallery” this month. The aim of Window Wanderland, taking place from 6pm to 9pm on February 9 and February 10, is to brighten the shopping precinct with creative window displays. The event is being organised jointly by Milngavie Business Improvement District and Milngavie Community Development Trust (MCDT). Last month, workshops were held to show people different ideas for window displays. There are many more for different creations and ideas on the Window Wanderland website. Ruth Blakey, of MCDT, said: “We hope to have lots of creations to display in windows in the town centre precinct this month. Displays might be from the very simple

to the spectacular but the more there are the better. “We would like as many businesses or groups as possible taking in the Window Wanderland and helping to transform the streets of Milngavie into an outdoor gallery for two nights for the benefit of the public.” Window Wanderland was first started in 2015 in Bristol by artist Lucy Reeves. The website states that some of the aims of the public art display is to lift
people’s spirits, build stronger communities, get more people wandering for exercise and to “let in light, spread joy and friendship.” Many towns across the UK have organised Window Wanderlands in recent years. TRIO’S WINTER SOLSTICE RUN
The three runners at the Nevis Centre at the start of their run
Three men from Bearsden chose the longest night of the year to run the 96-mile West Highland Way from Fort William to Milngavie. Peter Hunter, Charles (Chuck) Gordon and Mark Keddie took 30 hours and 52 minutes to complete their tough winter solstice challenge. The three friends had previously completed the official West Highland Way Race, which takes place on the summer solstice weekend, more than 10 times between them.

about running plans and we decided it would be a great end to 2018 to run the route in winter and on a day that few others would contemplate, or to date have managed to complete.” Having caught the train to Fort William, the trio set out at 5pm on December 21 to run south back to Milngavie. They faced 23 hours of darkness and long periods of rain. They were also self-sufficient carrying their kit, food and water. Chuck said: “People who attempt the winter West Highland Way run see it as an informal selftranscendence affair, traditionally attempted in reverse with the inevitable long darkness and variable weather.”
The goal for the winter solstice run Mark describes how the trio was simply to finish in less than worked together as a team. He 35 hours whatever the weather. said: “When things got tough Chuck said: “We were chatting
we reminded ourselves that no one forced us to be there. But, working as a team and looking out for each other, kept morale strong when the darkness and rain felt never ending.” Pete also has high praise for his friends. He said: “To achieve a goal like this you had to have people around you that you can fully trust. Our journey of unsupported, self-reliance became a reality and we are some of the very few to have done it. “The memories of our journey – and our friendships – will last for a lifetime.”

A campaign group set up to help save a threatened library from closure is holding a public meeting this month. Supporters of Westerton Library (SWeL) will meet on February 4 at 6.30pm in the library on Maxwell Avenue. Anyone who is interested in the campaign is welcome to attend. The campaign group launched a survey to gather local opinion late last year following news of a proposal by East Dunbartonshire Leisure & Culture (EDLC) to close Westerton Library. Two other libraries are also under threat of closure, Lenzie and Milton of Campsie, as part of cost-saving plans across the region. The survey of almost 200 people, 99% local, found that more than

95% would like to see the library stay open. Of these, 84% wanted the library to stay open with a change to opening hours and enhanced facilities. Some 86% of respondents are already library members and 18% use the library at least once a week. A further 40% use the library at least once or twice each month. Jim McCumesty, of SWeL, said: “Some might argue that in these days of internet-downloads, e-readers and the like, libraries have less relevance. This couldn't be further from the truth. The library is a necessary resource
COMP CARE COMPREHENSIVE CARE SERVICES
“Libraries are also still important for creating a love of reading in children from an early age, for older children doing homework, as well as for people accessing printers and free wif-fi. These are just a few of the many reasons why Westerton Library should stay open.” Mark Grant, General Manager of EDLC, said: “The EDLC Board has recommended a proposal to close Westerton, Lenzie and Milton of Campsie libraries as part of required budget savings. This proposal will be submitted to the Council for discussion in accordance with the terms of the Services Agreement.

The Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol and Drugs (SFAD) charity is looking for local volunteers to help with a planned bucket collection at Tesco later this month

Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol and Drugs (SFAD) is looking for support with a bucket collection at Tesco in Milngavie on Friday February 15, from 9.30am to 5.30pm. This is the second bucket collection at Tesco this year. This type of local support is vital for the work we do.” The charity was founded in 2003 as the Scottish Network for Families Affected by Drugs. In 2013, the remit was extended to include alcohol and became Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol and Drugs. SFAD provides a range of services across Scotland including a helpline, bereavement support service, family support services and workforce training and development support. There are two support groups in East Dunbartonshire. SFAD is proud of the grassroots history of the organisation. Katie said: “The charity was set
up by families themselves, who came together to support each other and to create a united voice to raise awareness of the challenges they faced as family members.” Funds for the service come from a range of sources, including Scottish Government as one of their National Commissioned Organisations (NCOs), commissioned work, grant funding and also fundraising. If you can volunteer please contact Katie at katie@sfad.org. uk or call 0141 465 7523. BOOK IS SUMMIT SPECIAL A member of Milngavie Mountaineering Club has written a beautiful and informative book about Scotland’s highest mountains. Robert Wright (pictured), who has completed a full round of Scotland’s 282 Munros, is the author of Explore the Munros: Your Guide to 50 of Scotland’s Most Iconic Mountains. He said: “I wanted to publish a book that was different from a regular guide book. Although the book does include short route descriptions of 50 of the Munros, there are lots of facts and interesting tales as well, not just about the hills but also the surrounding areas. “It’s a book that people can pick up and read, as well as browse through, to find out all sorts of things about Scotland and the Munros.”
The book features a wealth of stunning photos, many of which were taken by Glasgow southside photographer Keith Fergus. Keith said: “The images that appear in the book were taken over a period of around seven years, mainly to illustrate articles and guidebooks on the outdoors. “However, seeing them all together in the book, combined with Robert’s
superb words, is incredibly satisfying and something I could not have envisaged a decade ago when I took the plunge into the world of freelance outdoor photography.”

A foreword has been written by leading walks writer and presenter Cameron McNeish. Robert, who is the editor of The Scots Magazine, added: “I wanted to fascinate and inspire people with my book. Hopefully it will be attractive to Munro baggers and also those who have yet to walk a Munro.” Explore the Munros is priced £16.99 in paperback at the DC Thomson shop (www. dcthomsonshop.co.uk) and at Amazon, among other outlets. P1S VOTE FOR TOP BOOK is for children aged three to six. Along with the picture book, you can download a specially written Zing Zang Zoom song and an audio book of the story.
Alan Windram, author of 'One Button Benny', was voted favourite best children's picture book, part of the Bookbug Picture Book Awards, as voted by local pupils
Primary One pupils across Bearsden, Westerton and Milngavie were part of a nationwide vote to choose the best children’s picture book. As part of Book Week Scotland, all Scottish P1 children were asked to vote for their favourite book on a shortlist of three Bookbug Picture Books 2019. They included One Button Benny by Alan Windram; Eric Makes a Splash by Emily MacKenzie; and I am a Bat by Morag Hood. The Bookbug Picture Book Awards is organised annually by the Scottish Book Trust in association with Browns Books for Students.
Last month, it was announced that One Button Benny is the winner after receiving the most votes. The book, published by Little Door Books, tells a story of heroes and the unlikely places you find them. It sees loveable robot Benny becoming a surprising hero when the hairy, scary collectors try to take over his planet. With retro-style illustrations by Chloe Holwill-Hunter, the fun tale
Alan, of Oban, who also performs live shows for schools with the Sticky Kids theatre, said: “I am over the moon by the amazing news that my book, One Button Benny, is the winner of the Bookbug Picture Book Prize 2019. “I am so thrilled and also so thankful to Chloe Holwill-Hunter and her amazing illustrations that brought Benny to life.” Poppy Munro, who attends St Nicholas Primary School in Bearsden, said: “I really liked the One Button Benny book. It was fun to look at and read.” See scottishbooktrust.com. To buy the winning book: littledoorbooks.co.uk//books/ one-button-benny

MAKERS MARKET RETURNS FOR 2019 What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn
This month: MEDICINE BY NUMBERS...?
The organiser of a thriving local event has described herself as a “proud market mama”. Jessica Stafford, of Milngavie Makers Market, added that she believes that “supporting local businesses and makers helps the economy and environment.” The popular craft market will open its doors again for the first time this year on Saturday February 2 from 11am to 4pm in Milngavie Town Hall. Each market, which is free to attend, boasts more than 30 stalls. The goal is to provide quality handmade products, by local makers, that customers cannot buy anywhere else. Some makers have been so successful they now have their own shops. Each month there are new makers, as well as regulars. The
wide variety of stalls includes jewellery, ceramics, assorted textiles, art, plants and cakes for the hungry shopper. Sustainability is an important theme and stalls with ecofriendly products are always represented. Jessica said: “We are trying to be a wee bit nicer to the environment, ourselves and each other, with products we make and consume.” Stallholders are selected by emailing with examples of their work and are responsible for their own public liability insurance. To contact the market email: milngaviemakersmarket@gmail. com. Also see www.facebook. com/milngaviemakersmarket.
YOU’LL LOVE WHAT WE CAN DO FOR YOUR LOFT
“You doctors love your numbers!” a patient once remarked to me. On reflection he was partly correct, and sometimes it might seem we are obsessed with figures of blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, weight, units of alcohol etc, etc... However, a bit like painting by numbers, although these help give us an outline, we also realise that the numbers can get in the way of seeing the bigger picture. For GPs this means seeing the whole person, understanding who and what is important to them, and helping them makes sense of information as individuals. Over the past
few decades, medicine has become more “evidencebased”, which helps ensure that the treatments on offer have been shown to make a real difference to the quality and quantity of people’s lives. This has resulted in old treatments sometimes being abandoned as we realise that some have actually caused more harm than good, and this requires large studies collecting thousands of numbers! Fresh information keeps us updated with the latest guidelines which ensure patients get the most effective treatments and advice. So, yes, we do love our numbers... but they are only a means to an end!
We are specialists in loft ladders and hatches. We also provide boarding, lighting and insulation solutions – all geared towards giving you easy and safe access to your loft.
WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT

St Valentine's Day Feature | February 2019
Celebrated on February 14th, it is often marked by giving gifts to and spending time with loved ones. Valentine's Day traditions include exchanging gifts, such as chocolates or roses, and a romantic night out on the town. Origins of Valentine’s Day A popular theory says that Emperor Claudius II didn’t want Roman men to marry during wartime, but a priest called Valentine performed secret weddings, but was discovered and sentenced to death. On the eve of his execution he sent a card to the jailer’s daughter, signed “From your Valentine”. The first Valentine’s Day It is widely believed that the first Valentine’s day was in the year 496. The Romans had a festival called Lupercalia in the middle of February - officially the start of their springtime. It's thought that as part of the celebrations, boys drew names of girls from a box. They'd be boyfriend and girlfriend during the festival and sometimes they'd get married. Later on, the church wanted to turn this festival into a

Christian celebration and decided to use it to remember St Valentine too. Why February 14? King Henry VII officially declared February 14 as the holiday of St. Valentine’s Day in 1537 – and it has stuck ever since. The first Valentine’s Day card The Duke of Orleans sent the earliest Valentine’s card to his wife whilst he was a prisoner in the Tower of London in the 15th century. Across the world an estimated one billion Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged each year, making it the second most popular card giving time of the year after Christmas.

WIDER ACCESS TO FASTER BROADBAND HAVE YOUR SAY Thousands of local homes and businesses ON TAXI FARES can now choose to connect to Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband. The faster fibre broadband rollout includes some 14,230 premises in Bearsden, Milngavie, Torrance, Milton of Campsie, Lennoxtown, Kirkintilloch and Bishopbriggs. Householders and businesses will need to sign up for the new services with an internet service provider because upgrades are not automatic.
For householders, the superfast broadband allows more people to use more gadgets and appliances – phones, TVs, tablets, games consoles – that rely on a good internet connection.
The Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband programme is a key element of the wider Digital Scotland Programme, and supports the Scottish Government’s aim to make Scotland a world-class digital nation by 2020.
In the workplace, superfast broadband allows businesses to expand and more efficiently.
“Superfast” broadband is defined as a service that provides download speeds of at least 24Mbps.
To see if you are able to access the Superfast Broadband, check out a map at on the Digital Scotland website: scotlandsuperfast.com.
Local people may find they could be surfing on-line at much higher speeds at a similar cost to their current service.
Further information is also available on Twitter @ ScotSuperfast or Facebook at facebook.com/scotlandsuperfast.
Fibre broadband offers fast and reliable broadband connections at speeds of up to 80Mbps, and there are many suppliers to choose from.
Residents have until February 15 to make their opinions known about a proposed taxi fare freeze in East Dunbartonshire.
to review taxi fares within its area periodically. Following initial consultation it is proposed not to increase fares."
The council held initial consultation on the current fare structure with taxi operators, drivers and trade organisations.
The Council last reviewed taxi fares in 2016, with new fares previously coming into effect from 1 July 2016.
Joint Leader, Councillor Andrew Polson, said: “The Council, as licensing authority, is required

Every person living with Parkinson’s Disease knows the importance of exercise and the benefits that it brings, however, many do not know the best exercises for them as an individual. Over the last several years, there has been terrific research into the benefits of exercise for People with Parkinson’s. The great thing about the new research is that it shows that ‘Exercise is Medicine’ and the right style and types of exercise, given at the right time throughout the disease, can have a profound impact on the independence and confidence of the person living with the disease. One of the main questions I get asked as a Neuro-Physiotherapist is ‘when is the right time to start exercising?’. The answer to that is very easy – it’s right now! The
longer you leave it the harder it can be to get moving and make the positive changes you need to make to live a better, healthier and more independent life with Parkinson’s. ‘So what are the right exercises for me?’, I’m so glad you asked as this is a great question. I think you will understand that this is a difficult question to answer in an article, because it depends on your symptoms and abilities. The main philosophy I teach people with PD is to ‘THINK BIG’. An analogy that was told to me by someone with PD is that ‘it’s like driving a car with the handbrake on’ so you really have to up the revs way more than you think to even get moving in the first place. Remember, if you would like the right advice for you as an individual you should be assessed by a neuro-physiotherapist.
