YOUNG CARER’S CHALLENGE BID A young carer from Bearsden is hoping that a series of dance evenings will boost his bid to attend a lifechanging trip.
Sam Albrow, from Bearsden, is organising dance evenings for children with support needs to raise funds towards a World Challenge Trip next year
understanding when it comes to kids with additional needs and Wils is absolutely one of them. “There will be no dance reps to learn, no ‘in time’ nonsense, but just good fun for all.” Sam, who is a keen kayaker and would like to pursue a filming career when he leaves school, is very involved with Ben’s life and care.
Sam Albrow, 15, of Bearsden, is the brother of 13-year-old Ben, who has profound learning disabilities and epilepsy. He knows first hand how difficult it can be for families like his to socialise together.
Sam said: “The World Challenge trip will be a great opportunity to help in a community that is less privileged than ours and I feel that's a great thing to do. It also allows me to see different cultures and it will challenge my way of thinking.”
With the help of his mum, Karen, Sam is organising three dance evenings for children with additional support needs and their families. The events take place at St Andrew’s Church, Roman Road, Bearsden, from 6.30pm to 9pm. You can still book tickets for Saturday February 8 and for Saturday March 14.
Karen added: “As a young carer, Sam always appreciate time away from all of us!”
to do ourselves and also help to raise some of the money Sam needs.”
Profits raised, as well as donations, will go towards a World Challenge trip for Sam in June 2021.
up for a World Challenge trip to Borneo and Malaysia. They need to raise around £3600 each and because of Ben, who can make socialising difficult, we do not really have a huge social network to rely on to raise funds. It's tough and stressful getting out with a child like Ben.
The dance evenings – one has already taken place in January – will start with a session led by “Wils”, who is well known locally for supporting children with additional needs. There will be a disco afterwards.
The Albrow family hope that as many people as possible will attend the dance events and enjoy an evening together as a family. There is a limit of 25 families and tickets are £8 for child and parent/carer/ PA or £10 for child with their family.
Karen said: “Sam is one of about 50 children who have signed

A much-needed group for the elderly, housebound and lonely in Milngavie is desperately looking for new accommodation. Milngavie Friendship Circle, which was established 25 years ago, will need to find a new place to meet from July when the Milngavie Town Hall is shut for refurbishment. Jennifer Donald, leader of the Circle, says: “Our group brings companionship and joy to a few of the many housebound and elderly people living in our area. “In addition, we find that the volunteer helpers enjoy our

Wednesday meet ups as much as the members and we are obviously very keen to be able to continue our group after July.” The council is currently looking for alternative accommodation for the Milngavie Friendship Circle but there is limited local space. Jennifer said: “So far a lot of halls have turned us down. We only meet every Wednesday from 10am to 4pm but we need good
Jennifer was one of the founding members of the group, which is run as an independent charity. The Circle is run by volunteers with help from East Dunbartonshire Council, which provides a mini bus and three helpers to assist people to reach the get-togethers. The members are collected by drivers and taken to the Town Hall for morning coffee, games, other entertainment, such as a concert, a three-course lunch and afternoon tea. Jennifer said: “It is a great day for all that attend but it does mean there is a waiting list because it is a popular weekly event and we regret we can only take from Milngavie.” The local Deputy Lord Lieutenant has nominated the group for a Queen’s Award for volunteering. In 2013, Jennifer was delighted to receive a BEM from Prince Edward. For further information or to offer support, call Jennifer Donald on 0141 956 1273.

A local heritage group is encouraging people to rummage in attics and cupboards for photographs and artefacts for a forthcoming display. Milngavie Heritage Centre Group hopes to gather historic exhibits and information for the Villages of Milngavie exhibition in early March. The event is part of East Dunbartonshire Leisure & Culture Trust’s Local History month 2020. Hilary Howatt, of MHCG, said: “The countryside around Milngavie is blessed with a number of small hamlets, including Craigton, Mugdock and Baldernock. Each village has a rich social and economic
history, which belies their present appearance. “Our group would welcome anyone who has had, or still has, any connection with these villages to contact us with information, which they feel would be helpful in the preparation of the exhibition.
8, between 10am and 4pm in the former courtroom of Milngavie Town Hall. If you have anything to offer please contact admin@ milngavieheritage.org. In addition, the group will be leading a heritage walk around Craigton village on Saturday 14 March to highlight some of the interesting historical sites of the area.
“MHCG would appreciate the loan of any photographs or artefacts, which would enhance the exhibition.”
The walk will take place in the morning and will be led by local historian Donald Shankland. The walk is free but booking is essential.
The exhibition will run from Saturday March 7 to Saturday March 14, excluding Sunday March

A successful charity fundraising event is hoping to encourage more people to open up their gardens this summer. Hidden Gardens was first conceived by two couples from New Kilpatrick Church – Ian and Fiona McMillan and Eileen and Stewart Young – with the aim of raising money for worthy causes. The annual event has grown year-on-year and in May 2020 they would like to see even more gardens available for visitors and more cash for this year’s chosen charities, Glasgow City Mission and Alzheimer Scotland. The organisers are giving people notice of the event so that they

It is a lovely opportunity for people to visit gardens and to meet the gardeners. “Gardens do not need to be show-garden standard but they should have some areas of interest, either in design or planting to entice visitors in. “If you decide that this kind of event is for you, we would ask

The group has now been formally constituted and comprises many users of the Community Education Centre and Milngavie Town Hall. One of the Action Group members is Fiona Crosbie, who said: “With all still to be decided by East Dunbartonshire Council concerning the design and construction of the proposed new Milngavie Hub, members will have a stronger voice in the plans for the future of such important community assets. “We are aware that the council has received so many responses to their extended consultation that a response to this has already been delayed until spring 2020 so that all the submissions can be considered. “This is a promising sign that many in the community of Milngavie do care what happens to these public assets.

The official name for the user group is Community Facilities Users Association (Bearsden & Milngavie), although the facilities in Milngavie are used by people from a wider area. The new group aims to advance the accessibility of recreational, educational and childcare facilities to improve the lives of residents. They hope to have a strong voice in any decisions regarding community facilities in the area. NIC PLOTTED A NEW CAREER with a company operating a commercial and domestic service in the Glasgow area. Nicola says: “Those years required a lot of hard graft, including manual labour, and it was a steep learning curve. But I loved working outdoors and I greatly increased my knowledge of plants and plant care. I knew I had made the right decision to switch careers.” When the time came for Nicola to branch out on her own, she decided to focus on her main passion for plants and design. Many of her clients are in Bearsden and Milngavie.
Many people long to change career to pursue a passion or hobby, yet only a few do. For Nicola Todd-Macnaughton the chance was irresistible. Six years ago, Nicola, who grew up in Bearsden, left a job as a communications professional to become a gardener. Now the 35-year-old runs a successful company, The Bonnie Gardener, and is acclaimed as an expert in garden design, plants and plant care. It was an allotment at Garscube that changed her life. Nicola, who is married and lives in Lennoxtown, says: “Back then, I was living in Glasgow’s west end and I craved a plot of my own to cultivate. After years on
“I grew fruit and vegetables and experimented with plants and flowers. It was a pivotal time for me and I realised I wanted to spend more time outdoors and gardening – and less time working in an office.”
Nicola says: “It is the creation of beautiful gardens with happy plants that I most enjoy. Happy plants make a happy garden and the rewards of designing and creating a bed or a full garden for a customer are fantastic. A garden must be visually pleasing, as well as have texture and great scent. I like to create eco-systems for wildlife, too.
Nicola enrolled on a parttime course in Edinburgh to gain a Royal Horticultural Society qualification and then took a job as a gardener
“People say I was mad to change career, but it felt like exactly the right thing to do. It has definitely been the right thing to do.”
Nicola radiated a passion, energy and enthusiasm to work with our large garden. She brought with her a vast knowledge and love of plants and an eye for design. Her ability to translate and work our ideas into a living and evolving natural environment was outstanding. Stewart Thomson, Lenzie

MARCOTHON MUMS RAISE £4K What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn
WHERE’S This month: DONALD, YOUR TROOSERS…?
Twenty-one women ran every day for a month to raise funds for a cancer charity. The mums from Milngavie raised £4243 for the Beatson Bauble Appeal by taking part in an event called Marcothon. Marcothon calls for people to run 5km or for 25 minutes each day in the month of December, including Christmas Day. Mum-of-two Linda Robertson said: “Many of us ran every day last December and found the effort, camaraderie and generosity overwhelming, in a very positive way. “We thought, why not do it again? December is a time of giving, so what better thing to give to others than our time and effort?” The Beatson Bauble Appeal was agreed among the women
after one of the runners, Laura McCrorie, suggested the campaign. Her friends and family had appeared in an advert remembering the wonderful treatment their dad received at the Beatson in Glasgow. Linda said: “As soon as the Beatson was proposed, almost everyone in the group mentioned a relative or friend who had been helped at the Beatson.” With busy lives, the women had to be organised to run every day. Linda said: “It was really hard at times but we supported and inspired each other.” You can donate at: https:// uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Team/ 2019MilngavieMarcothonLadies

Doctors prescribing bed-rest for various ailments is very much a thing of the past. More rapid diagnosis and treatment, day surgery, and increased awareness of the dangers of immobility have very much put that idea to bed! Despite this, we know that hospital patients spend excessive time in, or by, their bed, especially in longer stay medical wards. This is not planned and may be related to staffing pressures, but there is thought to be another factor – pyjama paralysis. People in hospital, in pyjamas or hospital gowns leaving them half-exposed, tend not to

More than 100 potted Christmas trees were given a new home last month. Milngavie BID was keen to rehome the 130 potted trees that were used in a town centre display for the 2019 festive celebrations. In early January 2020, after instructing businesses to look after the trees with regular watering in December, the Milngavie BID team collected in the orphaned trees.
Milngavie Music Club starts the second half of its season – and the new decade – this month with a concert that is described as “powerful and passionate”. The Engegård Quartet, from Norway, will play at Cairns Church on Friday 14 February, starting at 7.30pm. Formed in 2006, the string quartet has become one of Scandinavia’s most sought-after ensembles, performing with great success across Europe and the Americas.
A local call out saw almost all of the trees being adopted within 24 hours. Milngavie BID spokesperson said: “We would like to say a massive thank you to the local public for this recycling and their replanting efforts.”
A commentator has said: “This ensemble’s variety in expression was incredible... [they] shook their audience with the intensity of their playing.” Hugh Macdonald, from MMC, is delighted that the Engegård Quartet will be in Milngavie.
He said: “As well as the masterly “Fifths” Quartet by Haydn, the Engegårds will bring an exciting calling card from their native land in Grieg’s dramatic quartet. “They will close with another Nordic masterpiece, the only quartet that the great Finn Sibelius composed in his maturity, which is intense and very personal.” Tickets are priced at £14 (students, £5; school pupils, free) from The Honeybee Bakery, 48 Station Road, Milngavie, and at the door (cash/ cheque only). Telephone enquiries at 07708 471776. Also see www.milngaviemusic.org.

Valentine’s Day is all about romance and expressing your love to the one person you cherish most. By putting in a little effort and some planning, you’ll not only create a very special day, but you’ll create a day that will be memorable. Here are a few tips for planning that perfect day.
Going out for dinner
Dress up and go out on the town for dinner and pick a restaurant that both of you have been wanting to try out. Organise a bouquet of flowers to be on your table or a bottle of fizz. Make it an adventure!
Romantic night at home
If you plan a romantic evening at home, clean up the clutter and decorate for the evening! Candles, rose petals and romantic music. Create a romantic playlist in advance. Cater dinner or
cook it together and dress up for dinner! Pick out a favourite wine or champagne and enjoy each others company. Try serving dessert first! Watch a romantic movie or dance in the living room, bedroom or kitchen!
Have a romantic picnic Take a blanket, a bottle of champagne and a candle to a nice viewpoint. This viewpoint could be anything from a hilltop to the roof of your house. Either way, lay out the blanket, light the candle, crack the champagne and enjoy.
Surprise them
Surprise your partner with a gift selected especially for them! Maybe it’s their favourite perfume or cologne or bottle of wine. Maybe it’s jewellery or a trip to the spa. Everyone loves a surprise.

KIDS’ MTB CLUB VISITS LOCAL PARK Senior Savvy with Suhail Rehman
This month: HOMECARE AND MY SANITY Spending time caring for my 84-year-old dad with dementia reminded me how emotionally difficult it can be
A children’s mountain biking club will visit Mugdock Country Park this month as part of a series of dates. The TrailCoach Kids’ Club takes place fortnightly at a “roaming” venue, including Cathkin Braes, Carron Valley, Aberfoyle and, on February 29, Mugdock. The club is run by mountain bike coach Ramsay Macfarlane, who aims to make each three-hour session fun but with a focus on developing core skills. Ramsay said: “It is important for young riders to have a foundation of core skills and knowledge to allow them to ride safely while building confidence. “The club sessions help to fend off pesky bad habits and common misconceptions that can hinder your kid’s riding development.”
The club caters for all ages and abilities as part of a group and covers topics such as bike safety checks, setup and maintenance, speed control, cornering, descending, climbing, developing technical skills, pumping the trail, skids and wheelies. Ramsay added: “There are plenty of fun games and activities to keep the kids entertained while learning and exercising, such as slow race, limbo, balance box and long jump." To sign up to five sessions throughout February and March or to grab a one-venue slot, see www. trailcoach.co.uk/event/kids-club. The cost of the full series is £100.
Helpful points to remember: • Accepting things have changed – Prepare to work from a whole new script. Old roles, methodologies, emotions may have changed more than you think. • Don’t rush it – you are both on uncharted territory, follow the changes. • Expecting nothing emotionally – whilst some parents may open emotionally, some may not. As bonds change some parents may ‘cling’ on to their own ways. • Expecting their anger – one thing a parent has with their child is authority, this may be lost during this transition and not easy for them to give up and may lash out one way or another. • Give them their autonomy – as much as you can, offer options instead of orders. • Ask their advice – a great way to show them respect, love and true value. • Love your healthcare providers – build good positive relations with those who care, nurses, doctors, CAREgivers. • Prepare for sibling insanity – sadly, some people go bonkers when parents get ill. Money, childhood mementos, furniture, possessions, family home, the will……..etc. Prepare for the coming crazy with dignity.

A RIOT OF COLOUR ON DISPLAY
There is still time to see an exciting artworks display at a local gallery. The exhibition at Lillie Art Gallery is by Paisley artist Ian Cook, who has spent time living with native peoples in the US, Central America and Africa and is passionate about their plight. The Glasgow School of Art graduate’s painting style is big, bold and striking. His new exhibition, which he has entitled “Savages” to highlight the tensions between indigenous populations and colonial aspirations, continues until February 7. For more information, call the gallery on 0141 956 5536 or visit www.edlc.co.uk
TRY CANICROSS IN THE PARK New classes have been launched at a local park to help owners and dogs to run together for better fitness and fun.
He said: “Canicross offers the chance for owners and dogs to work together as teams. The dogs give power assistance to owners but they need to learn how to take commands while not looking at their owners so they teach this.
David Harrison, who took up the sport of canicross three years ago, is the leader of the sessions at Mugdock Country Park.
“The sessions are for people of all abilities and we will do a bit of running and then stop to talk and then run again so it’s also suitable for a variety of fitness levels.
The classes take place on Thursdays from 7pm to 8pm. They are organised in blocks of four weeks with a week off in between. The first of a new block starts on February 13.
“Many different types of dogs enjoy canicross, too, and I now run with my beagle Jasper and a Collie cross called Flo.” There are many health benefits to canicross, including cardiovascular fitness and strength building. Spending time outdoors is also known to be a great way to improve mental health.
David, of Blanefield, said: “I discovered the world of canisports by chance, when my wife and I encountered a canicross event in our local park. “With a high energy beaglecross, who could not be allowed off lead, and a feisty terrier, this seemed like the sport for us. “After a bit of internet searching, we found Cani-fit and following a chat with the founder Lindsay Johnson we decided to give it a go. I was not much of runner back then

PUPIL’S WINNING MESSAGE
Christina Cafolla, a pupil from Craigdhu Primary shows off her winning design.
A pupil from a Milngavie primary school beat thousands of others to be named winner of a road safety calendar competition. Christina Cafolla, who is in Primary 7 at Craigdhu Primary, created an eye-catching image with the slogan: “Keep Calm and Wear a Helmet.” She took first place in the annual East Dunbartonshire Council contest, which saw 4483 entries from 27 schools across the region. This amounted to 1000 more entries than the year before.
were chosen as the best in their age range, were presented with their prizes at a special event at Kilmardinny House in Bearsden. Another local pupil to win a prize was Alisha Shazad, of Westerton PS. Councillor Susan Murray, Vice Convener of Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets met Christina and the other winners at the prize-giving.
Now Christina’s artwork will feature on thousands of calendars that have been distributed across the region to remind people to keep safe on and around the roads.
She said: “Our annual calendar competition really gets children thinking about the importance of road safety while allowing them to express their creativity.
The youngster, as well as a number of other pupils whose drawings
“Choosing a winner was an extremely difficult task. The
level of talent on show was very impressive. For me, Christina’s entry was everything that a good design should be: Bold, eye-catching and with a simple, memorable message.” Lesley Davidson, headteacher at Craigdhu Primary School, said: “We are delighted to see Christina’s entry named as winner. The design looks great and I know she will be thrilled to know that her picture will be hanging up in homes across the area. “All the children approached the competition with great enthusiasm and have learned valuable lessons about road safety in the process." Christina received £70 and a trophy that will go on display at her school. Prize winners in each category received cash prizes, a certificate and a pencil set.

Local organisations are being urged to apply for funding as part of East Dunbartonshire Community Grants Scheme. The closing date for applications for up to £3,000 from a total pot of £45,000 is 7th February. Not-forprofit groups were eligible if their goal is to bring benefits to local residents. Forms and grant guidance are available on the council’s website and outlines the range of eligible activities that can be funded, including start-up costs, special projects, equipment, salaries and running/capital costs. Joint Council Leader, Councillor Vaughan Moody, said: "This excellent scheme is one of the ways that the council provides funding to the community and voluntary sector – supporting

PLEA BY TRAGIC TOT PARENTS The grieving parents of a toddler who died after contracting sepsis have issued an appeal in the hope others will learn from the tragedy. Eliza Woods was just three months short of her third birthday when her life was cruelly cut short in December by the blood-poisoning illness. Now her mum and dad, Jodie and Mike, are campaigning to raise awareness of the killer condition.

Mike said: “Until 90 minutes before our daughter’s death, the only indication that anything was amiss was a fever that had started less than 48 hours before. “Sepsis is caused by the body over-reacting to an infection, any infection, and in the case of Eliza, her sepsis was triggered by Group A Streptococcus, one of the most common bacterial infections.

Sepsis can be challenging to differentiate in the early stages from a normal “bug yet there are a number of symptoms to look out for, including a fever, low temperature, breathing fast, fits, mottled skin, a rash that doesn’t fade, being lethargic or feeling cold to touch.
You can donate to the UK Sepsis Trust in Eliza’s memory at www.justgiving. com/fundraising/ Michael-Woods17. Further information at www. sepsistrust.org.

Every year, sepsis affects 245,000 people in the UK with 1000 deaths each week. Mike said: “This is equivalent to a death every 12 minutes and accounts for more than breast, bowel and prostate cancer deaths combined. More worryingly the mortality rate among UK children is nearly twice that of elsewhere in Europe, largely due to the speed at which sepsis can overwhelm a child’s body.
